SUMMARY

With a few caveats, this is a great little scanner. The best part is that it actually fits in my Targus computer case WITH my laptop. It weighs only 2-3 pds, and runs off USB power---no converter brick to haul around. Scans are sharp and fast. The automatic settings work very well for nearly all typical originals (old photos, business letters, receipts, etc.). Despite some shortcomings, the price and exceptional portability may make this series of scanners the choice for scanning books---because books which need to be scanned are often non-circulating items in libraries or archives.

SHORTCOMINGS

Unfortunately, the particular design of this scanner (and all other LED-based scanners) is that (unlike most fat desktop scanners) it cannot scan 3D objects. Any portion of your document or image which is not in absolute contact with the glass patten will be very blurry. The raised frame raises the edges of any original which does not fit on the glass patten, causing the edges of scans to be blurry. This is particularly a problem when scanning books. Nor can you just press down harder---that warps the glass causing blurriness elsewhere on the page, and may even jam the scanning mechanism. However, these problems may be overcome using the strategies discussed below.

The lid is non-removable, which means that you may be out-of-luck if you need to scan part of a large object. The software is multi-layered, confusing, and difficult to configure to your best use. Caveat, I''ve used at least three brands of scanner software, none of which were well designed. From the oddly named "MP Navigator" I suggest checking the box, "use the scanner driver" for access to the "Advanced Settings"--or better yet, scan from your graphics (photo editing) program.

NEVERTHELESS

Even though the frame is a problem, it is lower (1/16") and narrower (3/8") than most other scanners, and so, scanning books etc. is LESS of a problem than with most other scanners.

CHOOSING AMONG THE MODELS

The hardware and "Advanced Settings" portion of the scanning program of all LiDE models (at least models 90 to 210) appears to be identical. The major differences between the models is 1) improvements in the automatic scanning functions, and 2) the rated scanning speed (which is apparently software controlled). Despite the statistics, there is little practical difference in scanning speed between the models. The "slower" models are only slightly slower, but are quieter. Since I use only the "Advanced Settings" (never the automatic settings), the 110 is my preference, regardless of price. Canon CanoScan LiDE110 Color Image Scanner (4507B002)

The 210 may be best for children and other users who will never learn how to use the "Advanced Settings", since it claims to have superior automated scanning. The 210 is slightly faster. Canon CanoScan LiDE210 Color Image Scanner (4508B002)

If you plan to scan books and if you do not plan to carry the scanner around much, you might consider a Canon LiDE 700. It has 2 major advantages. The right edge is actually flush with the glass surface (hurrah!!)---albeit there is still an excessively wide margin. The lid opens 180 degrees, so you can scan portions of a large object--albeit there is still an "edge problem" for the other three edges. Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Color Image Scanner (3297B002)

SCANNING BOOKS

It is easy to scan books which have at least ½" of margin between the print and the spine. Place the right side of the scanner at the edge of a table, so that the book hangs open at 90 degrees when placed on the scanner. Place a moderate weight on top of your original (such as a 1" thick book). If you must press down with your fingers, press at the edges of the glass area (or even better, at the corners), not the middle. If you can''t quite get in tight enough, place a 1/16" sheet of stiff cardboard directly behind each page before scanning--it is a pain, but it works.

SCANNING CREASED OR FOLDED ORIGINALS

The foam "pressure pad" in the lid is a bit too soft to insure that some originals (such as stiff letters or receipts which have been folded) are pressed sufficiently flat (even with a book on top of the lid). If you notice this problem, then place a stiff cardboard sheet (or a thin book) directly on top of your original, and close the cover.

SCANNING TO A PORTABLE COMPUTER

The scanner draws power only when scanning. However, at least with my ThinkPad---scanning to a portable running on battery-power increases the scanning time by at least 50%. Plan on having your portable plugged into an AC outlet if you plan to scan more than a few pages.

OTHER REVIEWER''S COMPLAINTS AND EASY SOLUTIONS

> The automatic settings impose various limitations on the maximum selectable resolution, maximum file size etc.---which can all be superceded using the "Advanced Settings".

> Despite the instructions, it is not essential to close the lid, but it is necessary to avoid bright light from shining into the scanner. I use my dark microfiber cleaning cloth (folded) to cover any exposed portions of the glass patten when scanning in a bright room with the cover open.

> The maximum selectable resolution is 1200dpi. If you want to scan at, say 2400dpi, you have to type the value in manually in the resolution window. However, such scans are very slow, the files are very large, and I have found no actual improvement in resolution (detail recorded).

> The USB cable is nearly 5'' long--longer than necessary for a portable scanner. Longer replacement cables, or extension cables are cheap, Don''t panic about the scary "unlock the scanner before using" notice in the instructions. If you try to scan with the scanner locked, it will tell you, "unlock me". If so, just unlock it.

PRODUCING PDF DOCUMENTS

The direct-to-pdf option is not recommended unless quality is unimportant to you and you will only be scanning single pages or very short documents to pdf. The reason is that you cannot make any corrections to the scanned document. What if you scan a 50 page document, and then oops! page 12 is too dark?--you''ve got to rescan the entire document. For best quality and flexibility scan to 1200dpi tif files, adjust the images with your graphics program, and then convert (and assemble) the files into a pdf document using Adobe Acrobat (or other pdf editor). Beware that any scan, even of text, is an "image" (not real text) and is likely to be downsampled when converting to pdf, unless you specifically disable downsampling. When using a pdf editor to convert to pdf, select "highest quality" --OR a specific dpi (1200dpi) --OR disable "downsampling". Perfectly adequate graphics programs and pdf editors are available free if that is a concern.

OCR

OCR means to convert an image of text to real editable text. Unless you absolutely need real editable text to copy and insert into a document, you do not want to OCR. Unless the original is perfect and in a large common font, the error rate will be very high, and you''ll loose formatting, graphics, and everything else than text. In most cases, a much better solution is to use Adobe Acrobat (or other pdf editor) to add an invisible OCR-ed layer beneath the image layer. Such a document looks exactly like the original--including photos or other graphics. You cannot edit such a document, but you can search the document, and copy real text from the document.

OTHER SCANNING OPTIONS

The "Advanced Settings" offers many options such as auto-tone, unsharp mask, descreen, dust and scratch reduction, fading correction, grain correction, and others. I recommend AGAINST using ANY of these options, because in most cases most will degrade your image, you will not know that it is degraded, and you have no control over the degree of sharpening, or color adjustment, etc. "One size does not fit all". It is better to scan with all of the options off, using only the tone curve to adjust the brightness and contrast. Then use your graphics program to sharpen, descreen, reduce dust, adjust color saturation etc. as necessary--and you''ll be able see the changes, and undo mistakes.

GETTING THE VERY BEST SCANS

Admittedly, the automatic settings work very well under most circumstances when scanning "typical" originals (and it is the only portion of the very annoying scanning program that the Canon geeks make any attempt at improving). But what happens when the automatic settings do not produce good results? You are stuck with crappy scans---or you have to spend half a day learning how to use the "Advanced Settings". My recommendation---use the "Advanced Settings" even for routine scans. You''ll become a scanning wizard in no-time---far better than any "automatic" program. It only takes a few more seconds for fine-tuning per scan once you know what you are doing. You''ve probably already learned how to use your graphics programs to improve your photos---why not use those skills to improve your documents?

The very best scans are produced by using the "Advanced Settings", and setting the tone curve manually, with all of the various options "off". Pre-defining tone curves and other setting for your particular project makes the process easier. Unfortunately, you have to "summon" your pre-defined settings for each scan. Note that you have to define things in a particular order, or the defaults reset---very annoying.

Don''t count on scanning with the automatic or default "Advanced Settings" and then fixing things with your graphics program. "Garbage in--garbage out." Beware that you cannot adequately judge the quality in the "preview" view (which is why I ALWAYS scan to my graphics program and examine the scan before saving it).

[If the scanner saved RAW files, you could just do a default automatic scan and fix ANYTHING in your graphics program. But the LiDE doesn''t and few scanners do. The saved (tif or jpg) files are "abridged", (abbreviated or truncated), which means you''ve got to get the brightness, contrast, and color balance at least close to right. You can fix anything else.]

SETTING THE TONE CURVE MANUALLY

The default tone curve is line from the lower left corner of the graph to the upper right corner. The easiest way to alter contrast is to add a point at the midpoint of the line (to anchor it) and then drag the curve into a steep S-shape to increase contrast, or a less-steep reverse-S to decrease contrast. The easiest way to alter brightness is to add a point at the midpoint of the line, and then drag it right (darker), or left (brighter). If the white background of documents scans as gray--or there are gray shadows on the scanned page--then shift the upper right end of the tone curve about 10%-20% to the left. For photos you can shift the lower left end of the tone curve to the right to brighten up shadows. Black and white documents are usually best scanned as "grayscale", but with a steep (high contrast) tone curve.

SCANNING (TRUE) PHOTOS

There is little point in scanning most (true) photos above 600dpi. Practically speaking most "sharpening" functions have little effect above 300dpi. Ironically, with judicious use of sharpening tools (in your photo-editing program), photos scanned at 300dpi can look much sharper than those scanned at 1200dpi. IMPORTANT: Sharpen ONLY at the same size (and dpi) that the photo will be printed (or displayed on a monitor).

SCANNING HALF-TONE PHOTOS

Half-tone (screened) photos (from books, magazines, etc.) should be scanned at the highest resolution possible. You can use Gausian blur (in your graphics editing program) to improve (descreen) them for viewing and printing. Use the lowest possible value which eliminates the dot pattern: typically, 4-5 pixels at 1200 dpi, 2-2.5 pixels at 600 dpi. Caution---if your scan consists of both images and text, you don''t want to blur your text---instead (in your graphics program) select only the images for descreening.

FILE FORMAT

If you want the best possible scans, you should save to tif---but the only tif files the scanner driver produces are huge uncompressed tif files. Solution: scan from a graphics program which allows you to save files as loss-less tif (LZW compression) which will produce files as small as 1/20 the size with no loss in detail. If it is inconvenient to scan from a graphics program, you can scan to JPG. JPG files are always degraded by compression, but if saved nominally uncompressed, degradation does not become significant unless you repeatedly edit and save the files. Solution: scan as jpg, but convert the files to LZW tif before editing them in any way. LZW tif and uncompressed jpg files of the same image are about the same size.

DUST

Scanners are NOT sealed against dust. Do not use canned air to clean dust off the patten--they blow dust INTO the scanner. Clean the scanner frequently with a damp cloth. Protect from dust--such as in a plastic bag when not in use. (I have a desk drawer a little larger than the scanner where I keep it). Even with the most careful use, dust will eventually accumulate on the inside of glass and/or it will develop a haze. The inside surface of the glass cannot be cleaned nor replaced. The solution is to replace the scanner--which is far more acceptable if it is an LiDE 110 for only $50 or so.

PROBLEMS

I have owned a three different models. The third is new. After about 1000 scans each, the first two began showing irregularities (as faint moire patterns) when black and white half-tone photos were scanned at 1200dpi (or color half-tones scanned at 600 dpi or higher) and then descreened. Typical users would not notice any problem.

The drivers are not common between models. You cannot use two different models on the same computer, nor is there any "remember my settings" option when deinstalling the "old" drivers, nor is there anyway to save or backup your settings, or transfer them to another computer.

My experience with 3 different LiDE sanners is that frequent stopping and restarting while scanning takes up much of the actual scanning time. This could either be a problem with inadequate buffers or inadequate power. Hypothetically, if it is a power problem, a USB Y-Cable, which taps the power of two USB port may help. A USB Y-Cable did NOT improve scan time with my HP xw4200 Workstation, or my Thinkpad running on battery or AC---but in my tests, my new LiDE 110 scanned continously (without stopping and starting) with or without the extra power cable connected. Maybe my original power cords were defective. So, if you experience frequent stopping and starting, particularly in a portable running on battery, try a different power cord. If you need a longer or shorter cord that one that comes with the scanner, consider purchasing a USB-Y cord. It can''t hurt, and if it doesn''t help, you don''t have to plug in the second cable. If you decide you need a longer cable for desktop use, I suggest a Cables To Go 28107 USB 2.0 Mini-B Male to 2 USB A Male Y-Cable (6 Feet, Black). If you decide you''d like a shorter cable for travel, I suggest Bytecc USB2-HD201 USB cable mini-USB Type B (M) 4 pin USB Type A (M) 3 ft ( USB / Hi-Speed USB ) black

SUGGESTION TO CANON DESIGNERS

How about a "frameless" scanner (with a removable "clip-on" frame which could be used when desired), and with a removable lid---so that the scanner could be used to scan books and sections of large documents easier?

I scrapbook and was transitioning from manual scrapbooking to digital. I had tons of pictures that needed to be scanned into my laptop (thousands). We looked at the small picture scanners that scan hundreds of pictures in an hour or so. Decided against them because even though fast, the quality of the scans were grainy and you had to use sleeves for the pics. They didn''t get good reviews and were double the price of this scanner. This was one of the cheaper full sized scanners we found on Amazon, we decided that the Canon name had to be good for the price. IT IS! It is SO easy to use, nothing complicated at all. The software was easy to load and very user friendly. I discovered I could scan multiple pictures at a time and the software would separate them into their own files so there was no messing around with trying to cut and paste in order to do multiples at one time. It is really light weight and basic. The quality of the scans is fantastic, they looked as good as the original picture. I would recommend this scanner to anyone. You usually get what you pay for, but we were more than pleasantly surprised at the quality of this Canon scanner.

I recently purchased the Canon CanoScan LiDE 110 as a replacement for an older LiDE 30. This LiDE''s most important features is that it is compatible with all versions of Microsoft Windows, including Windows 7 64-bit (the older version is not compatible with 64-bit versions of windows) and the fact that it is powered through the USB 2.0 cable, meaning no power supply to carry around or finding a place to plug in, a plus for use with a notebook computer.

After following the directions for installation, installing the drivers before plugging the scanner into the computer, everything went flawlessly, and the first time the scanner was plugged in, after rebooting, the hardware was found and driver installed.

While this can be used as a stand alone flatbed copier, it can also scan to PDF files right from a button on the front of the scanner, meaning you won''t need to have a full featured PDF creation program to create PDF files. A button can also be configured to send a scan directly to your e-mail program, although I haven''t tried this feature.

If you use this scanner in a photo editing program, such as Paintshop Pro Photo, or Photoshop, after the driver software loads, I would recommend clicking on the advanced button, as it gives you much more control over the details of the scan, which is important when scanning photos. If you haven''t used a scanner before, then let me recommend that you select 600 dpi as your default scanning resolution, instead of the 300 dpi selection you''ll see the first time you use it. Also be aware that jpg files at 600 dpi can be quite large when in color, so if you are scanning a black and white photo or document, you''re better off selecting Gray Scale instead of Color. In the advanced mode, changes like DPI and color will show up the next time you use the software. If you use the basic mode, and make changes, this is not the case. That''s why I always recommend using this in the advanced mode.

If you''re looking for a scanner to scan 50 page documents, this is not the scanner to buy. You need one with an automatic sheet feeder, or an All-In-One with a sheet feeder. This flat bed scanner is best used for scanning photos and books.

Just a warning to Mac Lion users. This scanner does not work properly with the Mac Lion OS. I hooked one up to my new MacBook Air which promptly activated the Lion-based driver for the scanner. However, although I had no problem with the scanning function itself, neither the"autoscan", "copy", nor "e-mail" button did anything other than show me a preview of the scanned page on-screen. The only button that worked "automatically" was the "pdf" button, which did automatically produce and save a pdf version of the page being scanned. My question to both Canon and Apple is: what''s the point of providing a driver for this product with the Lion OS if it won''t work properly?

UPDATE: I am updating this review and improving my rating from two stars to four. After an exchange of emails with Canon customer service, I found the solution to my problem. It turns out that there are FOUR files that one must download from the Canon website in order for this scanner to function fully, including the one-click buttons. These files can be found on the website, under Service and Support for this product. Just click on the "drivers and software" button and be sure to download and install all the 4 items on the list, not just the one called LiDE 110 Scanner Driver. After the 4 items have been installed, you should open the program called MP Navigator EX, click Preferences then adjust the settings for the scan buttons.

Note that if you simply plug your USB connector into the USB port, you only get the scanner to function without the bells and whistles that come with the one-click buttons and, presumably, other features (which I still need to explore) that come with MP Navigator EX. Now if only Canon had made these instructions clearer on their website (particularly for new Canon scanner users who are on the Lion OS), I could have been spared all this trouble. The deduction of one star is for this shortcoming.

I bought this scanner to scan hundreds, probably thousands, of old photos from my parents picture albums. While the scanning part is not super sonic fast, it is pretty fast...the quality is not bad either. The best feature is the software that will automatically recognize multiple photos and save them as separate images for you. That is the biggest time saver for me. Granted it will not rotate them for you, so in some cases you have to decide if you want to try to maximize the number of pictures you scan each time, or put them in the best position so you don''t have sideways photos that you might have to rotate later. Either way, the scanner is fast enough and doesn''t require lamp warm up, so it isn''t a bother to only scan 3-5 pictures at a time. Overall I am very pleased. It''s also a bonus that it doesn''t require a power plug, it only needs to be plugged into the USB. That was nice because I can easily unplug it and store it away, without having to mess with plugging it into the power source underneath my computer desk. I would recommend this to someone else looking for a very affordable little scanner to scan all those old pictures that are laying around.

HP 98 C9514FN#140 Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging, Twin Pack-Black
  • PK 1 PK Newly designed, high-performance cartridge
  • Designed to work flawlessly with your HP printer and with all types of papers

I purchased these in April 2008 and they have a "Must be used within 6 months of April 2008 for warranty to apply" date on them.

My local retailer has the same cartridges with "January 2009" as the date.

I thought I was being proactive by buying extra cartridges and but I doubt I will use these in 6 months.

Next time I purchase a product with a limited shelf life I think I will stick with a local retailer so I know that I am getting a newer product.

Amazon If you all are reading the reviews... For products with a limited shelf life figure out a way to let your customers know this ahead of time. Also consider discounting products that are nearing the end of their shelf lives. Otherwise you won''t be able to compete with local retailers.

This is the best price I''ve found for HP 98 black ink cartridges in the two-pack. I would prefer to buy a re-manufactured cartridge, but, if you own an HP 6000 series inkjet printer, you''re aware the machine won''t work with any other cartridge brand. (Had I known this before I bought the printer, I would have chosen another brand, but am stuck with it for a while.)Therefore, if I can save a bit on the expensive ink cartridges, I''m pleased. I was glad to find the twin-pack at a better price on Amazon than at a local store.

Our office purchased this printer to replace an old one. We did have some problems with the installation, but that was our fault. We plugged it in to the old cable that connected to the computer but did not uninstall the old printer first on the computer. Our mistake. Once we uninstalled the old printer and reloaded the new driver, everything worked fine. It prints at lightning fast speed and even cuts the receipt for you! Our staff is amazed!

Dahle 12.5" Cut Personal Series Standard Capacity Rolling Blade Rotary Trimmer Save 30% off

Dahle 12.5'' Cut Personal Series Standard Capacity Rolling Blade Rotary Trimmer with Four Interchangeable Cutting Blades.
  • Rotary blade cuts in either direction
  • Sturdy metal base with pre-printed grid lines.
  • Includes straight, perforated, wavy and deckle cut heads.
  • Perfect for Scrapbooking or where you need precise and straight cuts.
  • Manual straight cutter with 12-1/2" cutting length

I''ve been using a smaller version of this Dahle personal trimmer for over a year, and my only problem with it was that the maximum paper size that could be cut was 9". Since most of the paper I work with is card stock that is either 8.5"x11" or 12"x12", I couldn''t always use my old cutter.

However, this Dahle model 507 cuts paper up to 12.5" long, so it is perfect for making greeting cards of all standard sizes.

The blade lasted a whole year, and was easy to replace, although rather expensive (the whole head needs to be replaced). I prefer a rotary cutter to a guillotine-type cutter for the type of papercrafting I do. If you need to cut large numbers of sheets at once, you might want to go to the guillotine-type cutter.

My only problem with my new Dahle model 507 is that there are no instructions on how to mount and use the three decorative heads that come with this cutter. I couldn''t find any instructions on Dahle''s internet site, either. I think I''m supposed to fit the two extra plastic strips that come with the product, down into the cutting groove when I use the decorative heads--at least this is the only way I could get them to cut, but it sure would have been nice to have instructions. The two extra plastic strips aren''t even labelled.

When I saw the poor review because of wrong advertising I had to chime in to bump up the rating on the cutter itself. I have owned mine now for well over a year and it is my primary go-to cutter when I reach for one. The only time I need my larger ones is if I want to cut something wider than 6" since this is a narrow cutter. That is exactly what makes it so handy most times, but if you cut widths wider than 6" I recommend you go for a trimmer with a larger bed.

The cutting mechanism is self sharpening and slides securely on a metal rail. There is not way you can cut yourself with this trimmer. Cutting is equally precise if going up from the bottom or coming down from the top. Note: if you want to cut a window in your paper than this is not the cutter for it as the blade never lifts off.

As far as interchanging the cutting heads is concerned, it couldn''t be easier than pulling out the red tab at the top and out comes the rail. The cutting strips that come with the additional heads (I had to order mine separately, the machine does NOT come with them, please make a note of that) are easily inserted underneath the blade and don''t require special instructions, at least not for me, and I am no engineer, just a female crafter. They can be turned once marred by the scoring blade or other decorative blades, that is why there is no right or wrong way to insert them.

I love this cutter, it is easy to use and precise. It does not clamp the paper down securely, though, it only has a smudge guard. So too much paper in one pass and your paper on the bottom will shift. Not an issue with me, I don''t run stacks through this machine, I have my full-size machine for that.

Highly recommended for crafters and home office use.

Update June 2011: I will try to clarify some of the issues about this product. It DOES work with the Canon MX-7600; it does NOT work with the Canon MP-830. Amazon has corrected the Canon part number in the product description.

Original review follows:

As some have mentioned, the Canon product number in the Amazon description is not correct. They ought to change it. Here is the accurate information:

Canon PGI-9 and PGI-7 5 Color Ink Value Pack: Canon product code 1034B010

Canon PGI-5BK Twin Pack: Canon product code 0628B009

I first ordered this through PlexSupply since they had a great price. They were selling the PGI-5BK value pack. So I am in the process of returning the pack to them. They were apologetic and offered to have the incorrect shipment picked up at which time they said they will issue a fulll refund. Hopefully this will occur... (Note PlexSupply no longer appears as a provider for this product.)

I then ordered this product from Amazon. The PGI-9/PGI-7 value pack came. So Amazon ships the product consistent with the word part of the product description and not the Canon product code that Amazon incorrectly includes in the description.

The product is excellent. The MX7600 multifunction printer that uses this ink produces outstanding images even in the "fast" or draft mode of printing.

I have seen other inaccuracies with Amazon''s ink compatibility advisor. I have stopped relying upon it. The manufacturer''s website can provide reliable advice on compatibility. So can the owners material that comes with the printer. Then come back to Amazon to place the order.

Epson PictureMate Pal (PM 200) 4x6 Photo Printer

Epson PictureMate Pal 4x6 Photo Printer
  • View, edit and print brilliant 4x6" photos - without a PC!
  • Compatible with all popular memory cards and camera phones with PictBridge or Bluetooth* adaptor.
  • Print smudge, scratch, water and fade resistant photos you''ll be proud to share.
  • Beautiful glossy or matte prints last generations longer than traditional film-processed photos.
  • Print stacks of lab quality photos at an everyday low price -- it''s an unbeatable value for superior photos

Epson''s newest series of portable printers seem like a downgrade compared with their previous printer, the picturemate deluxe.

The prints speeds are improved a bit in some of these new printers, but all these new printers use a dye based ink system instead of pigment based ink. Pigment based ink is used in Epson''s professional line of printers because the ink has been tested to last 200 years in a photo book or 100 years in a glass frame. Notice that Epson does not comment on how long prints will last from these dye ink printers.

Though, for the average consumer, they may find the other features of this printer appealing. It has a faster print speed compared with the picturemate deluxe. I own the picturemate deluxe and do not find it''s print speed too slow. I''m sure the print quality of the picturemate pal will long just as nice, but it will not be suitable for archival prints if this is important to you.

This is a great little printer. The size is appealing, and it''s easy transportable (with a convenient carry-handle on top). Unfortunately it does not have a battery, so it must still be plugged in.

I really like the fact that the ink and paper are purchased together, and the quantities of both seem to line up fairly well, so I''m not running out of one or the other at different times.

As far as the ink goes, I''m not sure what the other reviewer is talking about, because, according to Epson, even the different kind of ink this printer uses is still archival quality.

I think the picture quality is good for the price of this machine.

This is a great printer. The photo quality is fantastic and it''s super easy to use. The borders are also very fun. I made my own Christmas cards this year!

There are more print layout options when you use it as a standalone printer (not through the PC) like printing wallet size.

This Photo Printer replaces an old Kodak printer dock that died after many years and thousands of photos. I wanted a printer that would do 4X6 photos. I''m very pleased with the Epson PictureMatePal. It works easily. I like it better than my old printer, especially that it closes up when not in use to protect it from dust and dog hairs.

I am extremely disappointed with my printer. I had a Sony FP30 Picture Station and decided to replace it when the feeder become worn down. I bought the PictureMate Pal (PM 200) unit based on the positive reviews I have seen for it, the price, and the high-speed at which the unit can print.

It usually starts out okay, but inevitably the quality degrades as it prints. I usually have to stop it once or twice and clean the heads or align the nozzles wasting precious ink and paper in the process.

I continue to lose photos because the quality gradually degrades, and by the time it is noticeable, I often find myself going back to reprint 15 or 20 prints.

I have a MAC, and the Photo Impression utility is not user friendly at all. When the printer is interrupted, instead of resuming it starts over resulting in wasted prints.

I would recommend staying away from this unit -I''m kicking myself for purchasing it.

It''s not the seller''s fault why the cartridges doesn''t work. Epson has a way of reading legitimate cartridges and gives you a warning prior to printing that it will not work. My mother sweetly bought two sets of these thinking that they''ll help me but they didn''t. The only cartridge that works is the magenta and it bleeds on the paper. I honestly don''t suggest anyone purchase these cartridges, I''m not trying to hurt the seller but it''s really not worth it. They don''t work so you mine as well buy the original. Sorry.

I figured if you get what you pay for then with an average 4 star rating the worst that could happen with these would be that they print lousy copies, which was fine since I don''t have to print quality artwork all that often. Naturally, the first time I used them, I was printing a nice birthday card, however. The colors faded into a weird yellow on one print and one had a big smudge of yellow ink, but the weird faded one was was workable if not perfect. The next time I tried to print, the printer would attempt to print, but only blank paper would come out. I''ve rarely had a problem with this printer in the 4 years that I''ve had it that couldn''t be solved with a nozzle cleaning, but the printer seems to be finished. Maybe I can get it to work again, but I''ve already wasted an hour on it (not including the time it took to write this warning). Buyer beware!

Want 6 Pack Epson Ink Cartridges for Epson Stylus Photo R200 Discount?

For me these cartriges do not provide satisfactory results for my printer, an Epson Stylus Photo Multifunction RX620. After attempting to print a .pdf file with text and photos the results were pathetic: massive steaks through photos, unreadable text, etc. Could not access the ''Setup Menu'' to try to run the Head Cleaners etc. So there was nothing to do but remove all these cartridges and return them.

I searched around a lot to find a less expensive option to the Epson brand ink due to it''s outrageous price. I was concerned with going for the lowest price replacements I found as I didn''t want to just buy junk.

This product seemed like it might be a little better quality with its slightly higher price. What I found was that the electrical contacts on the replacement cartridges were considerably smaller and lesser quality than the originals but enough to work as long as everything was very clean.

This brings me to my next point which is that the fill holes on the replacements were covered with a sticker that needed to be removed, however when I removed the sticker before installing the first cartridge it spilled ink very easily into the the cartridge tray and the trouble began.

After several hours of messing with cleanup and careful installation only four of the six cartridges were recognized by the printer and installing an almost empty Epson cartridge was immediately recognized and the printer would then function.

So if you have more time than money and your very careful with the replacement process the price is very good.

If Epson wasn''t so concerned about their bottom line I would be happy to buy original replacements, but not at their going price.

I had a earlier model so I thought when it was time to get a new one I would purchase another Brother. I bought this one for our home office because it said it had 10 page faxing ability. The print quality is the same as the previous model, which is low, but standard for fax machines. The trouble is, if you want to fax multiple pages, the machine jams. You need to stand there, when it is faxing, to make sure the paper is feeding straight. I have found it impossible to fax more than 3 pages at one time and even with this the paper jams.

Many reviews point for 40 prints and less..yes I confess that I was printing 40 or less if I use premium plus papers but not any more.

I bought 16 cartridge since I bought my HP A618 but the last cartridge printed 140 and still I can print photos (I got the warning of low ink in 100)

what I did is changed the setting in the HP Photosmart Essential 3.0 the software to use it to print your photos. these are the changes:

1After you click at the Simple Print, make sure you choose the correct size not bigger or Full Page. (for me usually 15x10)

2choose Printer Settings at the top right then confirm your paper size (if you use paper with tab, select it)

3click at the Advanced printer Settings. then select your paper type (advanced or premium photo papers). select print quality, Best. I use the (best) printer quality because I didn''t notice any difference while using Maximum dpi and I think Maximum dpi only good when you print 5x7 but trust me, don''t ever use it. stick to (best). it consumes less ink than maximum and the output is amazing.

4Click at the (Features Tab) at the top left. then at the bottom there is a very bad technology which is (photo fix), always put it OFF. this feature makes your ink finish earlier. Don''t use it ever.

before I use the new settings, I decided to buy Canon PIXMA mini320 but it was out of stock so I bought 2 cartridges to print 70 photos. but the first cartridge still usable.

soon I''ll use the second cartridge and I''ll try to update my review.

for now, use the settings above and I hope you get more printed photos of a single cartridge.

Update 13-6-2008:

now I have used another 2 inks of this..one has printed 48 photos and the second printed 81 photos and still in use.

I got a tip from hp life chat support. they told me to buy the longest expiry date ink which means the ink expire date will last 1 year or 2. I bought an ink that will expire at aug-2009 which I''m still using it until now and another june-2008 which only printed 48.

Paper for 110 ink:

don''t ever use premium or premium plus HP papers. they will not dry as long as you live or even water-proof papers. they will consume more ink too. you have 2 other options. Canon paper plus glossy or high-glossy and HP advanced glossy. both are incredible. I got stunning photos when I used them and longer life ink.

Photo quality settings:

if you edit your photos in the PC, don''t forget to set the resolution of the photo at 600dpi or 300dpi. to know more about the resolution search the net for (PPI & DPI). once you understand them you will know that you didn''t ever get a perfect photo. now when I compare the best photo before this method and after, I realized that I was a stupid who wasted money on papers like premium and lost quality of 400 photos I printed by not setting the resolution of the photo which is the same as the printer.

If you still interested in buying this ink, follow these steps above specially the expiry date of the ink and using HP advanced or canon plus paper. and before you buy new printer like Canon, try doing my way and buy oe last ink before spending money on new printer.

one last thing. don''t print photos from sd card. use a software like adobe lightroom to set the exposure, light, the black level, remove noisea and colors.

goodluck.

I love the convenience of my photo printer. The HP110 ink cartridge produces beautiful prints that look like professional quality. However, the cartridge really doesn''t last very long. I print in 5x7 and usually run out of ink before I print 20 photographs. At this rate I figure each print costs $1.10 (with photo paper included.) With my film camera I can have an entire roll of 24 5x7 prints developed at BJs Wholesale club for less than $5. Using the printer and cartidge at home may be convenient, but it''s not very cost effective. I would have given the product 5*s if I was able to print more photos/cartridge.

This is a nice product and it does create excellent quality prints but unless you print on the lowest quality you don''t get many prints out of this cartridge. I have an HP A616 Photo Printer and get about 24 4x6 pictures per cartridge on the highest print quality setting, when you factor in the cost of paper that is over a dollar a print which is much too high to pay for normal printing. Home photo printers are good if you need to print a picture on the fly but not for average photo printing needs.

Bought this ink for my Photosmart, I''m getting the best pictures ever with bright and sharp colors. Same or even better than what you get from a photo shop. Great product

Save 8% off

First of all to the reviewer who noted that you''re paying roughly $20 for 5 mL of ink this is NOT the ink you use in your everday school report, resume, and web printing. This is PHOTO INK and as such is a speciality item with a higher price tag.

Secondly, this ink provides amazing quality and clarity in my HP Photosmart A612 which is a cousin to the HP Photosmart A 610 (I believe the A612 was only sold through QVC but I could be mistaken). Anyhoooo, the picture quality is fantastic on par if not better than what the prints I receive from the one hour printing service at the drugstore or Target.

Since I set up my printer yesterday I''ve printing like a fiend and so far have only used a tiny bit of ink.

Great ink and a great value!

-Our older Canon printer quit working and the cost to repair it vs a new printer made me realize the new printer was the way to go. Upon receiving the printer I found it very user friendly to hook up. For those who are choosing to get this wonderful printer, please check this out. On usa.canon.com, under "photo inkjet printers", click on this printer, then click the "how to video"... . . . this is great. . it takes you step by step on the set up. . .showing you the way. . making it easy. We have an Apple iMac with the wireless "airport extreme", it connected just the way the directions explained. . .coooool. . . What I really liked, it showed how to do the ''dvd'' disks and that set up. . it works excellently.

-Now to compare this one to our older Canon. . . I will not go into lengthy details. .. and bore you to death. . .simply put this printer prints professional prints. . period. Superior in every way. Canon has a winner here. I use it for my work, wedding photos, concert photos, portrait photo, I have no complaints.

-One cool side note. . we also run two pc''s, one with windows 7 professional and a older laptop with XP, both have wireless routers. Both hooked up to the printer, even though they are in different rooms, the wi-fi works the way one expects.

Inks. . .I have to talk about this. Canon finally has ''XL'' ink tanks. . yep extra supply. With ink being the main expense for photo printers this was a welcome feature. . . cuts some of the cost down. . .

-Thanks for your time. . . hope this helps. This is a wonderful, excellent printer that is very user friendly.

Buy Canon Office Products IP7220 Wireless Color Photo Printer Now

After about 2 years since their last round of releases, I was happy to see that Canon updated their standard inkjet printer offerings that include the option to print on printable discs...the primary reason for me to buy this printer.

Setup on my Windows 7 machine was easy. The printer came with a USB cable, though with this printer''s wireless option I didn''t need to use it (even for set-up which is rare). Set up was a little slow as you also have to run an "alignment" page through the printer (it comes with special paper for this) though I don''t understand how that does anything other than clean the brand new heads and waste ink. In about 20 minutes the printer was ready for real action.

It comes with it''s own software, which I wasn''t happy with (too limiting for my label designs); but I found I''m able to print directly from Photoshop as well. The supplied software is OK for partial images and basic text choices; but not for being in full creative control. Even though I had .jpg file(s) prepared with all the fonts flattened already and the images adjusted, I didn''t see how I could put a full image / full coverage through the supplied software.

Going through Photoshop wasn''t hard, but it did take about (3) discs to get the alignment ''just right'' so that it prints centered. I will try to upload pictures to show the challenges. Once I did that, though, I''ve been getting very good results. I simply wrote the alignment numbers on a sticky note I''m leaving on the machine so I can check them each time...unfortunately the driver resets to "center" each time; so I think I''ll have to re-enter that forever.

Apparently the printer lowers it''s heads each time you go to print on the CD (which uses a tray to load; standard and included) which is fine, but adds about 2 minutes to each session. If you''re going to print a batch of discs at once, though, you only have to wait for the machine to prep once before the batch. Then just swap discs into the tray each time after that. Not too bad, though it''d be nice if one could buy an extra tray as an accessory which I haven''t been able to find as an option.

OK; so it''s a little slow. But the quality is excellent! After my third HP and second Epson printer that could print on discs died, I''ve been using a Brother that still works but prints very lightly on discs. Frustrating. This printer gives excellent results.

Setting up the free app on my iPhone was easy too, and was able to print a photo wirelessly from another room. This printer has two paper trays (though each with a small capacity) so one can leave 4x6 paper loaded in one tray, with standard paper in another. Both trays can stay in place while using the disc tray as well so that''s awesome.

There is a very slight banding mostly just one pale line in the printed photo. I can live with this, much better than most in my experience, and if I really want to print photos I upload to a retailer and use their $100,000 machine for a $.14 4x6 on true photo paper. For "quick" prints, this machine is a good choice for me.

I have not yet used the auto-duplex (double sided) feature; nor printed on standard paper. But the discs I''ve used are NOT glossy (matte) and print really well.

The machine''s pretty quiet, and pretty, and fairly compact. The paper tray catcher can be closed and opens automatically when printing which can save on space nice for me since I don''t use it every day; but that will just depend on how often you use the printer.

The only thing that''s missing is a card reader. You can not print from this machine without sending the file from a computer/smartphone device. My Brother machine could do that, but since the quality wasn''t acceptable; this is a better option for me. Again: the easy connection helps me swallow that pill a little easier too.

I haven''t had it long enough to really judge ink levels, but I''ve printed 10 full-face discs and (1) 4x6 photo print, and according to the software monitor about 30% of the magenta and cyan are gone from the included standard capacity tanks that came with the printer. Full set of Canon replacements is about $63 standard, $95XL.

For truly professional photos I doubt any desktop inkjet will do the job. For most people I think this printer will be great. The disc printing is excellent though you''ll waste a few figuring out the alignment.

I hope this review helps you decide if this is the right machine for you!

Read Best Reviews of Canon Office Products IP7220 Wireless Color Photo Printer Here

For many years I have printed with a wonderful Canon Pixma ip4700. I was never dissatisfied with the color or quality, however the power supply abruptly died. After trying to fix it with two more power supplies, I spent 2 months using a relative''s Canon MX892, a recent all-in-one photo printer, only about four months old purchased from a warehouse store. Finally I broke down and purchased this new printer the ip7220.

I have only had the new printer for about a week, but I am sorely disappointed with many aspects in comparison to my 3-year-old ip4700 OR the recent model MX892.

My work involves printing repetitive graphics that MUST match from batch to batch. My work is detailed and high-color with lots of color variation in a small area of 5-15mm. Using the same backend settings I was able to duplicate my ip4700''s prints on the MX892 with zero effort. This has not been the case with the ip7220

* Color tone this printer''s prints are noticeably more blue. I''ve had to set my custom print profile to HEAVILY move from cyan to red, and from blue to yellow. This permanent change fixes the blues, greens and yellows but STILL the true reds in my work print more fuschia-toned than the results from either of my other Canon printers. I also find the blacks to be oversaturated and overpowering. Elements that before resulted in a gentle gradient to black are now dark and delineated. I never had to make any sort of color tone change in my other printers. The color on this printer is very mis-calibrated.

* No more VIVID photo mode. I don''t know how many people use this mode in their Canon photo printers, but for my specific type of work I used this mode ALWAYS and it was part of my custom print profile for my work. And again, I received the same great results using vivid photo mode in both my ip4700 and the Mx892. For some reason, VIVID photo is no longer an option with the printer drivers.

So now to make up for the lack of vivid mode, I have to spend more time in Photoshop manually saturating each of my pictures and test printing them for results, something I have NEVER had to spend time on before. My husband admonishes that I have been using a crutch for 3 years, but it was an included feature of the product! How is that a crutch if it was working for me? Why is this feature no longer included??

* Slow and bulky

This printer is a tank. I think it might do things my old one did not (CD printing for example), but I still am not sure why it has such a large footprint when it''s not an all-in-one. It also is significantly slower printing at high quality than either the mx892 or the ip4700. I believe it''s because this is 9600dpi rather than 4800dpi. Unfortunately in my work this does not seem to make much difference. Which is actually fairly surprising; as I noted before, I print very detailed small things where print quality upgrade should make a huge difference. Turns out the old printers were already awesome.

* No visible ink tank levels. This one is self-explanatory. My ip4700 had tanks with clear backs so you could see what was left. Not any longer.

* No pass-through back tray. I enjoyed the ease of quickly popping something in the back tray. I always printed on my photo paper as a pass-through. I also print address labels on this printer. It makes me very nervous to have those roll around inside instead of going through a pass-through. I assume they have mastered paper handling in order to remove the pass-through feature, but I find it inconvenient. I liked glancing over to see what paper I already had loaded in my pass-through.

The ONLY thing I like more about this printer is that it has an auto-open exit tray when it starts printing. I no longer get yelled at if I try to print and forgot to open the front.

In summary: This printer feels like a huge downgrade from the last two Canon printers that I have used. I am considering returning it to search for an older model printer, which sounds and feels crazy. I am hugely dissatisfied with the features in relation to my needs.

Want Canon Office Products IP7220 Wireless Color Photo Printer Discount?

The Canon Wireless iP7220 is a good product but it does have some shortfalls. It does not work with third party software for printing on printable discs such as "SureThing Disc Labeler Gold6. It will only print on discs with its own software that comes with the printer called "Image Garden", which is very limited in scope as to what it allows you to do. The best feature of the printer is the ability to print on both sides of the page without having to reinsert the page. The printer itself is a very good product, installs easily but could use some improvements with the software.

Save 21% off

I am always excited when Canon comes out with a new printer, but the 7220 is a disappointment.

The printed colors are off compared to the ip4920. They print with a much more blue tone. I''ve tried making adjustments in the printer software, but am having trouble warming up the photos.

The 7220 also does not provide a rear paper feed. Instead it has two trays, one for regular paper and one for photo paper. This really limits what you can do with the printer and I found myself constantly having to reload paper.

The smallest paper size that can be used is 3.5 inches wide vs the 4920 that would allow a width of 2.17 inches. This limits the ability to print wallet prints and other custom photos with the 7220.

The photo paper drawer broke on me during its second use!

Its disappointing that the 7220 replaces the 4920 and takes away two pieces of necessary functionality, the rear paper tray and the ability to print anything smaller than 3.5 inches wide.

I hope Canon will reconsider these flaws when releasing their next printer. We have been loyal Canon users for years and this is the first time we have been disappointed or dissatisfied with one of their products.
