We''ve owned the DR-2050C for about 8 months at our office, shared by 8 users. Setup took an hour or two, but went as smoothly as can be expected. You need to install 3 software programs to be complete. We are using it on an old, spare, Pentium 3 machine. I added a high-speed USB 2.0 card to the machine which definitely gives the scanner better speed. We don''t use all the features but for just scanning loads of old paper, it works great. NOTE: It does pick up dirt easily, causing streaks in the output. The front-side lens is very hard to reach, and the mfr. is very cautious about how to clean it. (Their recommendation did not get the gunk out.) I called their Tech Support and he suggested using alcohol on a cotton cloth to clean the lenses, but must be careful not to get alcohol on the rubber rollers. We clean it regularly now-whenever it shows streaks-and it is fine. I would buy another one for the home, but the price is still too high. Hopefully prices of these things will fall in the future.

I have owned my 2050C for about 3 weeks. Whilst it has integrated quite well into my offices, it did take a 5 hours of frustration, an email to tech support, a 2 day wait for a reply, and a download of the latest CapturePerfect (3.0.30 iirc) to get multipage documents batching to pdf''s without a consistent lockup on or about the 3rd document.

I would have expected this very straightforward feature, which is heavily promoted in the product advertising, would be working out of the box (i.e. off the provided CD) for $500.

Happy to have it functional now, but I suggest you email tech support for the latest CapturePerfect and bin the included CD.

I installed 27 of these in a medium-sized law firm in 2005-2006. In the 3 1/2 years since, only ONE has needed replacement. They''re wonderful units that do a good job of creating OCRed PDF''s quickly. The installation is simple not intuitive but simple. Install the drivers and Capture Perfect and you''re ready to go. The secret to the installation is to leave the CD in the drive and you won''t have any problems. Capture Perfect is a small and quick program without a lot of bloat it doesn''t take over your computer like most of the other scanners out there (think HP).

The rollers need replacing every 4 6 months with constant use but, otherwise, this is a set it up and forget it machine that lasts a long time. The competition is pretty much the Fujitsu ScanSnap but their software package is MUCH too limited (no JPG''s, for example).

If you''re looking for a good stout quick performing scanner for a small office? You can''t go wrong with the 2050c.

In the old days we used to copy all the documents for our small business and then store them in boxes for at least seven years. Sorting, stapling and putting in order thousands of pages took so much time. Now all we do is scan the documents in pdf format and from time to time back up on DVDs. Canon DR-2050C does the job just about perfectly. Our daily scanning volume is about 100 pages but a couple of days a month we scan more than 1000 pages per day. This is where the small size of the scanner comes in handy. You can easily move the scanner to your desk and while feeding stacks of paper into it have the time and space to do other work. Occasionally the scanner will take two or more pages at a time so it is important to keep an eye on it. Paper jams do happen but not often and it is a real snap to clear them. Cleaning the narrow strip of glass a few times after seeing streaks on the scanned documents is all the maintenance we''ve performed so far. As for the software, we have only used CapturePerfect which works just fine. Sometimes glitches happen when the software takes longer than usual to get ready to scan but that''s no big deal.

I have not (yet) bought the Canon DR-2050C, but studied its specifications. It seems to be equivalent to the predecessor Canon DR-2080C, except for the supplied software and the computer interface. If you can, go back and read the reviews for the DR-2080C. The old model featured both a USB 2.0 and a SCSI-II connection. The new model has only the USB 2.0 interface. The exterior design is also a little different, with the new model being a little more rounded. Let''s be clear: Both are A4/legal size scanners. The talk of scanning A3 documents (11x16 inches) is a software feature that requires you fold your A3 documents to scan front and back at the same time. Software can then stitch the two images together again.

I''ve owned my old Canon DR-2080C for two years now, and have been very happy with it. But I''ve used it a lot, I think I''ve scanned 100,000 two-sided pages (200,000 images) with it, and it is coming to the end of its lifetime, so I''m leaning towards replacing it with the new DR-2050C. Perhaps its nearest competitor, the Fujitsu fi-5110EOX, is a little cheaper but isn''t TWAIN/ISIS compatble.
