HP CM2320N Color LaseJet Multifunction Printer

HP CM2320N Color LaseJet Multifunction Printer
  • Color LaseJet Multifunction Printer
  • Print Speeds of Up to 21 Pages Per Minute ppm, Letter 20 ppm, A4
  • 50 Page Automatic Document Feeder, ADF
  • Hi Speed USB 2.0 port, Built In Ethernet/Fast Ethernet Networking, RJ-11 Fax Ports
  • One Door Access to the Preinstalled, Easy to Replace Original HP Print Cartridges

There are two major reasons to choose a laser multifunction printer over a much less expensive inkjet competitor: print output speed and quantity. You may not save money on CM2320''s hardware and/or supplies compared to a basic or mid-range inkjet multifunction unit, but you will save a huge amount of time, especially when printing many pages. Because your time is valuable, you will value this printer highly.

HP''s Color LaserJet CM2320n Multifunction''s $600 price tag is respectable for this small-office-or-home-office (SOHO) printer/copier/scanner. It''s physically heavy, but light on stress during Macintosh installation and setup for either USB or network printing. Whether printing directly from a cable or wirelessly over a network, "first print" times are a good to very good 20 30 seconds, and successive print times are remarkable: two seconds!

Written instructions are minimal, and a comprehensive PDF manual is available from the company''s web site. Print it out, and make extra copies of its most relevant pages. There are many hidden and less-obvious features and settings to understand that will make the user experience much more productive.

HP ships this unit with toner cartridges installed. That''s the good news. Toner levels are half full out of the box. That''s the bad news. The company justifies this sin of omission as valid for keeping the purchase price low relative to the marketplace. The deal is sweetened with a $100 cash back offer on the printer. MyMac urges HP to give customers full toner cartridges. A complete replacement set of the four toner colors costs $120 each, or $480 total. Yikes. You can obtain a terrific wireless SOHO inkjet printer and a bathtub full of cartridges for around $1,000.

Why consider buying this CM2320 Multifunction Printer (MFP) at all? In a SOHO situation, you need your first print pronto, and your successive prints double pronto. This is where the new generation of HP Color LaserJets excel. Their prints are beautiful, and they appear quickly.

Paper stock for laser toner printers keeps getting better, but glossy photo paper is still unavailable. Presentation and text documents are gorgeous in black and/or color from this MFP, and are equal or superior to similar prints from an inkjet MFP that prints much more slowly.

The installation CD provided in the carton should go straight into the dumpster. Instead, download the new installer from HP''s web site. MyMac gives this advice to purchasers of all HP gear. You have been advised.

Color accuracy is potentially problematic when printing from Photoshop screen images. A color management utility is part of the software installation, but is beyond the scope of this review. Our Photoshop printing experience has required brightness tweaking due to dark prints from CM2320, using a full range of profiles. If your eyes are starting to glaze over thinking about digging through arcane settings, don''t worry. Most prints, most of the time, are splendid.

Scanning and copying are so straightforward that it''s not necessary to review them in depth. A standard HP Scan application is included in the software installation, and it operates similarly to all other scanners from this company, except it''s a lot faster! Ditto for the copier, which can handle both flatbed and sheet-fed originals.

To summarize:

PROS are speedy, high-volume printing of most documents with exceptional quality; plus excellent copying and scanning included.

CONS are some color management issues, and half-full original laser toner cartridges.

MyMac rating: strong 4 out of 5 recommendation for this terrific multifunction machine.

Very happy with combo printer, bought a second one after receiving this one. Good color quality and price made choice easy.

HP LaserJet 3390 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax (Q6500A#ABA)

HP LaserJet 3390 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax
  • Professional-grade all-in-one printer, copy, and scanner
  • Crisp and clear 1,200x1,200 dpi print quality
  • Print speed up to 22 ppm; automatic duplex printing
  • 64 MB internal memory
  • 1-Year limited manufacturer''s warranty

Having owned an HP 3330 multifunction (from 2002) I thought this new 2006 model can only be better. Well, it is in some ways....I guess.

The 3390 adds duplex printing and has a built-in JetDirect for network based printing and sharing, but other than that it doesn''t seem to be any different than the recently discontinued 3380. And for that matter its not a whole lot different than the 4 year old 3330. Fairly sad product innovation on HP''s part considering that the competition is offering some credible new features in this class of product.

Comparing the new Brother 8860DN and the HP 3390 side by side proves the Brother is superior in most things. Since this is an HP 3390 review, I''ll refer you to my Brother 8860 review for more details.

Its not all doom and gloom with the 3390, I just feel for the $700 price they are asking, HP could have added a bit more innovation.

Things missing from the HP that I wish were included:

1) duplex scanning from document feeder

2) faster scanning (its S-L-O-W)

3) a legal size scan glass (realtors still use legal paper)

4) fax forward to email

Other annoyances:

The 3390 has only been out for a few weeks, however they''ve already revisioned the software from V1.0 to V1.1 and now V2.0. HP has also released two firmware updates in that tims as well. Sounds good, assuming all problems are resolved, however they are not! In the couple days I used this printer, I found the following issues:

1) the TWAIN interface for the scanner will often give warning messages about the document feeder and these warnings don''t make sense. Bypassing them resolves the problem. Plus the TWAIN interface counts the pages backwards (ex: 6 of 2 instead of 2 of 6).

2) I have experienced issues where printing a document from Word will cause all text to be truncated on the paper.

3) TWAIN interface will not work with the Windows XP built-in fax program.

4) If you turn off your 3390 the HP toolbox program will sometimes hang.

So, all in all its a decent machine. For anyone looking for a no nonsense multifunction this will do the job. For $200 less you can also get the Brother 8860 that will do everything the same plus more.

HP''s telephone Sales staff and its website say clearly that this printer is Vista-ready. They mean exactly that -the PRINTER is Vista-ready. What they don''t tell you is that the scanner and fax modem are NOT yet supported by Vista-compatible software. The software that comes with the printer will not even install under Vista. The Vista-compatible software on the HP site is a plain printer driver -no scanning, no faxing, no fancy printer-configuration interface.

They promise to have something for Vista soon, but their initial date for that was May 2007, it''s now the end of July, and nothing yet.

This is a great printer, but if you have Vista and need the other all-in-one features now, get something else.

And shame on HP for claiming an All-In-One is Vista ready when it isn''t!

I recently purchased the Laserjet 3390 to replace my aging LaserJet 2100 and I couldn''t be happier. With the current $ rebate this machine is a terrific value, and its performance so far has been stellar.

Print quality is excellent, as is the scan/copy quality from the flatbed. To scan or copy legal-size documents the automatic document feeder must be used, and the quality of the output seems slightly lower than from the flatbed, though still quite good.

As other reviewers have noted, the HP software is another story. I installed the printer to an existing small network, and the software had to be installed twice on each computer (i.e., installed, removed, then reinstalled) before it would function properly. However, after the second installation everything works flawlessly.

My only complaint is with the single-slot manual feed. I''ve added a second 250-sheet paper tray, which makes this a bit easier to deal with, but it''s still a minor annoyance. If HP had incorporated a fold-out manual-feed tray I''d give the 3390 an unqualified 5-star rating. As it is, I''d rate it 4.5 stars.

The hardware on this printer is excellent. It shares the same toner cartrigde as the 1320. However, the software sucks, sucks, sucks. If you plan on using this with one or two computers in a single room, you should be fine. If you plan on using this in a business environment, you will be stymied.

THIS IS A CONSUMER PRINTER!!!

The HP auto updater can''t work with a proxy server.

Their is no fax confirmation for network users.

The printer can only be managed via the USB interface.

Fax logs can only be accessed through the USB interface.

Tech support for this printer is clearly consumer, not business, oriented.

The printer is very fast, very quite, nicely built, integrated handles, solid feeling.

The software is sucks.

If you are using with one or two computers in the same room, you should be very happy.

I purchased the LJ3390 to replace an existing LJ3320. The $350 rebate available until the end of Oct was the deciding factor as it made the unit a very reasonable purchase.

My main interest in the upgrade was to purchase a network connected printer. Duplex print capability was the other factor that tipped the scale in favour of the LJ3390 over the LJ3052.

I now have 3 desktop and 2 laptop printers all printing successfully. All run XP SP2 and are either connected via a wired or wireless network connection. Software installation went flawlessly.

While I can''t comment about HP versus other vendor software, I can say that the LJ3390 software is a major improvement over that of my LJ3320. Scanning is faster by at least a factor of 2X, quite likely more like 3-4X. Printing of complex pages is also much faster, exactly what I would expect from a newer generation print engine and an HP Laserjet printer.

All in all I am very pleased that I upgraded. It has met all my upgrade goals. Printing is faster, scanning is much faster. The network connectivity ensures anyone can print without another machine being forced to be a print server and constantly left on. I haven''t played with the fax side yet, but am hoping this finally let''s me retire my trusty standalone fax machine.

I really wanted to believe that I could pay a lot less for an ink cartridge for my Epson Picture Mate Photo Printer as I was tired of paying such a high price for cartridges that printed so few pictures.

I ordered this product, sincerely hoping it would work. It did not. I inserted the cartridge as I always had done before. I turned the printer on and immediately rec''d a message on my computer something to the effect to "insert a cartridge into the printer." It would not recognize this cartridge. When I tried to get it out, I had to pry it out (with the help of an additional person) each having a pair of scissors and gently working it out. I really thought it would not even come back out or that we would break something internally in the process of removing it.

I''ve always heard not to use generic ink cartridges on our printers and now I guess I believe that.

This cartridge didn''t work at all with my Picturemate. The printer didn''t even recognize the cartridge. I called them up and they said that I would have to step through their tech support before they would give me a credit or send a replacement.

Tech support? Really? For a printer cartridge? With cartridges that work, I plug them in, and they work.

A complete waste of money.

I was quite disheartened by all the negative comments. I had bought a pair of those cartridges and, sure enough, I had the dreaded "cartridge unrecognized" message on my Picturemate.

But, but, but... I found the solution to my problem by examining the cartridge.

First: trust the diagnostic: the cartridge is not recognized.

Second: ask why ?

All ink cartridges are identified trough one of those mechanisms: bar code sticker or a small connection pad to the innards of the cartridge. The 5570 has no bar code but it has a very small PC board tucked on the left side (facing the printer) with 5 contact pads.

Third: is there anything obviously preventing the contact on the five pads to be made?

Answer: yes, there was such a thing!

The little PCboard is positioned by two things:

a rivet

a plastic tongue and notch (in the PCboard)

Guess what: the plastic tongue, formed with the rest of the cartridge, was protruding way above the level of the contact pads on the PCboard. Hence preventing the Picturemate to "sense" the cartridge!

Fourth: take your preferred X-acto knife and remove the excess plastic off the tongue.

Fifth: re-mount the cartridge and enjoy!

Dumb me: it took me so long to figure this out.

A broken belt unit can lead to bit of a clean-up job inside your printer, so replacing the belt unit is for peace. Changing the belt unit in the Brother duplexing color laser model HL4040CDN simple. With the power switched to "Off", open the front of the printer as if changing toner. Slide out the drum unit until it stops. Remove the drum unit and set it on a clean paper on a table top. Lift the old belt unit out. It lifts from this green tab at the front of the belt unit. It weighs only a couple of pounds so it is easy to lift up and out from the printer. Replacing is the reverse of the process. Note: If you are changing out the excess toner box, it sits right below the belt unit, and that is just one more step to replace. I changed out the excess toner box while changing out my belt unit because it was about due, too. Afterwards the instructions walked me through the procedure to reset the belt unit counter via the on-printer menu. The procedure took 9 minutes in total to change both.

The price is about $25 less via Amazon--delivered--than it is to buy in the local Office Depot.

We have gone 37,000 pages printed thus far in two years. We are on the original drum. There is no toning, and no dots or streaks appearing on the image. The drum is behaving well thus far.

Amazon''s ordering process was easy. Order processing was by the next day. And delivery took 2 days--to Hawaii. And we had selected Super Saver Shipping which was free.

I was skeptical of purchasing this product. I even contacted Brother to make sure it was going to be easy to install. This belt failed on a three year old printer that gets a lot of use, and we had been told that it might be cheaper just getting a new printer. We were told that the parts were too costly but after some research and contacting Brother about the install, I checked for the part and found the best price on Amazon. What would you do spend $89 on this part or $300 on a new printer. We are pleased that the part was exactly as Brother described, very, very easy to install. We hope we are good for another 3 years!

I tried out two units and had to return them both for poor quality printouts. The first unit arrived with toner (all the colors) that had leaked inside the printer. The printouts had two very light lines in the same place on all the colors. With the toner leak, I assumed that the printer was probably damaged during shipping; so I returned it and asked for a replacement. The replacement arrived with a broken tray that feeds the paper into the scanner. Since the tray is a separate piece that connects to the printer, I figured it could be replaced separately. So, I tried printing and found that the printouts had light and dark lines. The lines were not as distinct as the printouts in the first unit, but they were visible from across the room.

Still learning all about the machine, as it took awhile to get help setting it up where it belonged. So far it prints very well and fast, Size is smaller than some of this type they have a helpful video to show how to replace toner cartridges. I feel it will work nicely in my office and the paper tray is sturdy.

Amazon fedexed the machine to me very quickly, and have been prompt with any other purchases or questions I have had like buying my Kindle and books purchased. Unfortunately the fedex man would not take the box upstairs for me, so I had to wait until I could get my Granddaughter''s husband over to do this and help me put it on the printer stand.

Love the convenience of being able to print multiple 4x6 prints without re-loading paper or having to trim the paper to the right size. The only difficulty I found was in the initial loading of the roll. It took me a number of tries to get the roll to load, but once I did, was able to continuously print one after another. You do need to cut each print, but there is no "waste" between prints. And you need to "un-curl" the prints after printing by placing something heavy on them overnight.

  • Outstanding paper savings, easy energy savings

After 4 years, my photosmart 4200 decided it no longer wanted to accept its cartridges, I decided to simply buy a new printer.

The envy simply stands apart from most printers as it simply feels more solidly well built, it''s much heavier than most but probably more than it needs to be the thing IS heavy, perhaps that''s why it''s ultra quiet when printing.

The set up is easy if you plan to use a cable. If you plan to use it wirelessly beware, the set up may be a bit more cumbersome. My windows computer could not recognize/discover the printer''s IP address, it took me an hour with tech support to successfully set up.

THE REASON I TOOK IT BACK: If, like me, you use your printer for work related documents, beware THIS PRINTER CANNOT PRINT ON LEGAL SIZED PAPER. Like Apple, HP has sacrificed the practical for the aesthetic. I understand what the designers wanted to do, by hiding the tray and paper under the machine, hence making it a wonderful looking living room accessory but they could have built an opening on the tray, on the off chance one wanted to print legal-sized paper. Also, for a printer at this price point, having just two cartridge slots: black & color, will almost certainly make your ink replacement budget higher.

If you want printer that is not your typical noisy, bulky, cheaply built plastic fare this may be the one. However, if you run a home based business, or print different sized work documents from home, beware of its limitations.

After extensive research on printers,I decided to purchase this HP Envy 114.It had the options I wanted and got great reviews from people on Amazon and from other comments elsewhere.

I have three different operating systems in my home.Mac Lion, Mac Snow Leopard and Windows 7. All three OS loaded flawlessly. All OS loaded from a single CD that came with the printer.I was able to setup the Network through my home WiFi with absolutely no difficulty at all.The software did it all.All I needed to do was follow the instructions as the disc loaded the software on all three of my computers.

You can tilt the display menu to fit your preference. You can set the printer to stay in idle mode so it''s continually ready for print from any room or computer in the home.Or even set it to a timer to shut down. The paper loads from the front bottom of the printer. The tray easily pulls out when needed to be filled. The printed page spews from the front as well. The display menu and paper extension automatically recesses back inside the printer after you grab the print. It is so much more quieter than the Cannon I owed. The speed is very good also.I have not yet tried to use my iTouch through air print or the e-print feature as of yet,but I see no reason why it wouldn''t be as flawless just the same.

Before you load the software on your computer,be sure to load the paper, ink and plug in the printer and follow the instructions from the printer''s menu first, then proceed to load the software in your computer(s)

The instruction has a web site address that offers 20 free faxes a month. So if needed, you can fax the odd time without cost to you through the web without using a phone line.

I will gladly update in perhaps about 6 months time to review the durability.

Take care.

I already have one of these and we have used it for about 6 months and loved it so much, I just bought another. It takes up very little space and does what we need it to do. It is not a really high volume printer, so if you want one of those, this is not the right one for you. I wanted a wireless printer that I could print from for any of our devices: ipads, macbook pros, imacs, airbooks. And this does it without any problems. It does require attention to detail when setting this up, so try not to take any shortcuts. All in all, HP did this printer right!

This printer is not for you if you plan to use it a lot. Access to paper is not super convenient.

HOWEVER, if you are interested in a sleek, sharp, quiet inkjet printer that is ePrint and iPad AirPrint compatible, then this is the one to get. It is heavy, it is quiet, it moves all by itself and just amazing to watch as you print something from the iPad. Then, it closes the door by itself. My family was just in awe.

I wanted to love this printer. It has got to be the most beautiful printer ever. The fact that you cannot tell it is a printer and that there is no paper hanging out to give it away was a selling feature to me. However, this printer is truly form over function.

PROS:

Beautiful

Whisper Silent

Decent black-ink printing speed

Ridiculously easy set up

Smaller footprint

Rarely feeds papers crooked

Large touch screen with decent performance

CONS:

Will not allow custom paper sizes

Limited print options (cannot fine-tune print quality, about of ink used)

Jams on heavier paper

Slow color print speed

Washes out colors

The worst con has got to be that after just a few dozen prints, the backs of my papers became smeared. I don''t know if it''s because I was using heavier/thicker paper, but it was annoying.

I wanted to love this printer, but I''m returning it today.
