Having owned an HP 3330 multifunction (from 2002) I thought this new 2006 model can only be better. Well, it is in some ways....I guess.

The 3390 adds duplex printing and has a built-in JetDirect for network based printing and sharing, but other than that it doesn''t seem to be any different than the recently discontinued 3380. And for that matter its not a whole lot different than the 4 year old 3330. Fairly sad product innovation on HP''s part considering that the competition is offering some credible new features in this class of product.

Comparing the new Brother 8860DN and the HP 3390 side by side proves the Brother is superior in most things. Since this is an HP 3390 review, I''ll refer you to my Brother 8860 review for more details.

Its not all doom and gloom with the 3390, I just feel for the $700 price they are asking, HP could have added a bit more innovation.

Things missing from the HP that I wish were included:

1) duplex scanning from document feeder

2) faster scanning (its S-L-O-W)

3) a legal size scan glass (realtors still use legal paper)

4) fax forward to email

Other annoyances:

The 3390 has only been out for a few weeks, however they''ve already revisioned the software from V1.0 to V1.1 and now V2.0. HP has also released two firmware updates in that tims as well. Sounds good, assuming all problems are resolved, however they are not! In the couple days I used this printer, I found the following issues:

1) the TWAIN interface for the scanner will often give warning messages about the document feeder and these warnings don''t make sense. Bypassing them resolves the problem. Plus the TWAIN interface counts the pages backwards (ex: 6 of 2 instead of 2 of 6).

2) I have experienced issues where printing a document from Word will cause all text to be truncated on the paper.

3) TWAIN interface will not work with the Windows XP built-in fax program.

4) If you turn off your 3390 the HP toolbox program will sometimes hang.

So, all in all its a decent machine. For anyone looking for a no nonsense multifunction this will do the job. For $200 less you can also get the Brother 8860 that will do everything the same plus more.

HP''s telephone Sales staff and its website say clearly that this printer is Vista-ready. They mean exactly that -the PRINTER is Vista-ready. What they don''t tell you is that the scanner and fax modem are NOT yet supported by Vista-compatible software. The software that comes with the printer will not even install under Vista. The Vista-compatible software on the HP site is a plain printer driver -no scanning, no faxing, no fancy printer-configuration interface.

They promise to have something for Vista soon, but their initial date for that was May 2007, it''s now the end of July, and nothing yet.

This is a great printer, but if you have Vista and need the other all-in-one features now, get something else.

And shame on HP for claiming an All-In-One is Vista ready when it isn''t!

I recently purchased the Laserjet 3390 to replace my aging LaserJet 2100 and I couldn''t be happier. With the current $ rebate this machine is a terrific value, and its performance so far has been stellar.

Print quality is excellent, as is the scan/copy quality from the flatbed. To scan or copy legal-size documents the automatic document feeder must be used, and the quality of the output seems slightly lower than from the flatbed, though still quite good.

As other reviewers have noted, the HP software is another story. I installed the printer to an existing small network, and the software had to be installed twice on each computer (i.e., installed, removed, then reinstalled) before it would function properly. However, after the second installation everything works flawlessly.

My only complaint is with the single-slot manual feed. I''ve added a second 250-sheet paper tray, which makes this a bit easier to deal with, but it''s still a minor annoyance. If HP had incorporated a fold-out manual-feed tray I''d give the 3390 an unqualified 5-star rating. As it is, I''d rate it 4.5 stars.

The hardware on this printer is excellent. It shares the same toner cartrigde as the 1320. However, the software sucks, sucks, sucks. If you plan on using this with one or two computers in a single room, you should be fine. If you plan on using this in a business environment, you will be stymied.

THIS IS A CONSUMER PRINTER!!!

The HP auto updater can''t work with a proxy server.

Their is no fax confirmation for network users.

The printer can only be managed via the USB interface.

Fax logs can only be accessed through the USB interface.

Tech support for this printer is clearly consumer, not business, oriented.

The printer is very fast, very quite, nicely built, integrated handles, solid feeling.

The software is sucks.

If you are using with one or two computers in the same room, you should be very happy.

I purchased the LJ3390 to replace an existing LJ3320. The $350 rebate available until the end of Oct was the deciding factor as it made the unit a very reasonable purchase.

My main interest in the upgrade was to purchase a network connected printer. Duplex print capability was the other factor that tipped the scale in favour of the LJ3390 over the LJ3052.

I now have 3 desktop and 2 laptop printers all printing successfully. All run XP SP2 and are either connected via a wired or wireless network connection. Software installation went flawlessly.

While I can''t comment about HP versus other vendor software, I can say that the LJ3390 software is a major improvement over that of my LJ3320. Scanning is faster by at least a factor of 2X, quite likely more like 3-4X. Printing of complex pages is also much faster, exactly what I would expect from a newer generation print engine and an HP Laserjet printer.

All in all I am very pleased that I upgraded. It has met all my upgrade goals. Printing is faster, scanning is much faster. The network connectivity ensures anyone can print without another machine being forced to be a print server and constantly left on. I haven''t played with the fax side yet, but am hoping this finally let''s me retire my trusty standalone fax machine.
