My IT people bought me the HP 2100 for use as a personal printer in my university office. I liked it so much that I bought one for my home office to replace an old HP 4L. It has been an excellent purchase and I highly recommend this printer. When working at home, I now have the print speed to download and print out legal decisions from the web or Lexis, which was too painful to contemplate with the slow speeds of the HP 4L. I get 8-10 pages per minute regardless of whether the printer is set for draft or top quality modes. So only the longest legal decisions take more than a couple of minutes. Of course, as a law professor, I''m not often printing out graphics intensive files. Charts and figures do slow down the print speed some, so a more graphics intensive user might want to look at alternatives. I''m also not using it in a network environment at home and, at work, I don''t share it with other users. So, again, your mileage may vary.

Both of my HP 2100 have been extremely reliable. They are quiet, the paper never jams, they have a reasonably large main paper tray, handle single sheet feeds fine. I''ve generated several camera ready texts on my HP 2100 using the top quality print settings and had no complaints from readers or publishers, So for a low-volume, mostly text setting, this seems like an ideal printer.

This was our first laser printer for our home office. We opted to get the non networked version and add the faster tbase100 network card which we found online for 1/4 of HP''s price. Amazone had lowest price on this printer and free shipping to boot (I see price has gone up a little since we bought it) Contrary to some of the rewiews here fan only runs when it is printing so it is not a distraction. Warmup time is not too bad about 15 sec. It really shines on large printing jobs pumping them out very fast. I really like the 4 pages per sheet mode for printing archives althought this slows it way down, we are adding memory...to overcome this. B&W pictures are very clean. Overall we are very satisfied with this printer. Only improvement would be to include a fast network card instead of the T10 card that comes in the 2100TN (No card comes in this reviewed model) Well done HP!

I bought this to replace an aging yet still functioning HP LaserJet B&W laser printer. So far, I am very happy with the Dell B1265dnf. It responds more quickly than the old printer, and the output quality is just as sharp. Software/driver setup took almost 30 minutes on my Win7 box, but went smoothly. Dell printer manager software allows you to control most settings of the device from the PC instead of having to use the on-device menus. Scanning documents and photos to the PC works well. I haven''t needed to fax yet but I assume that will work just fine.

One thing I especially like is that when the unit goes to sleep (after 1 minute of inactivity), its fan turns off and it becomes completely silent.

Update: Now I''ve had the Brother for over a year and a half, and I see that others have had bad luck with theirs. I will temper my original joy with the comment that my first unit did go bad (just wouldn''t print), but Brother replaced it with a new one during the warranty period. They are so inexpensive that I bought another one to see me through the two weeks of repair/replacement time. That was less than great, but now I have a backup, for still less than $300.

I''ve never experienced much in the way of paper jams, so I would guess that at this price point, Brother just isn''t providing consistent build quality. That''s too bad, because the prospect of a bad unit is a real disincentive. I''m still satisfied overall, but recognize that not everyone is having the same experience. And of course the downtime resulting in purchase of a second unit was a drag. I would consider a different printer, but Epson and HP have both been such poor experiences for me (with far inferior support), that I will still probably prioritize a new Brother model when I need to upgrade. No sign of that happening any time soon though.

Ok, I have only had this all-in-one for a little over a week. But after years of being a slave to the HP ink needle, I am so happy with it I want to dance.

I have never really seriously considered Brother in the past, and now I feel like I have been living in the wrong world. Like if someone told you "My new car does 0-60 in 5 seconds, gets 70 mpg, and cost $1500. What, you didn''t know about those?"

For less than $150, I now have a very compact printer with 10baseT ethernet (goodbye nightmarishly technical HP JetDirect 300x external network box), separate ink tanks for all colors, more advanced features than my 3 year old HP that cost around $1000 with the JetDirect, sharper printing, and best of all, real, honest-to-goodness Mac OS X support. Their software and documentation shows an absolute commitment to doing Mac right. (It took a year and a half for HP to get the Mac drivers for my OfficeJet to be minimally functional, and never did manage to handle things like scanning from the unit to a computer on the network.) Brother has earned a long-term customer here, and I am telling everyone I know.

Like any AIO, the quality of printing and scanning is probably not up to what you can get in stand alone units. But for general small office/home office use, it is more than fine. If you want the highest photo quality, get a specialized photo printer with a 6-color head. But actually, the photo quality on this unit is still far better than you could get at any price only a few short years ago. It''s just that we have gotten spoiled at the truly amazing quality of photo inkjets in the last couple of years.

I will probably get one of the Olympus dye-subs for photos eventually, but in the meanwhile, prints from this on photo paper are plenty good enough for posting on my refrigerator door. And the resolution and appearance of business graphics, while again possibly not up to what current stand-alones will do, are the best of any printer I have ever owned, and leagues ahead of the older HP OfficeJet I just gave away.

And the best part is, it could fall apart in 6 months, and still not cost much more to replace than I have been spending on HP ink cartridges. My OfficeJet sucked down ink like a storm drain, and the cartridges were EXPENSIVE. It became clear in short order that their business model was built around bleeding you dry on consumable costs. Those guys have quite a racket, but I''m happy to say I am out from under it.

Excellent B&W and color copy functionality using the document feeder

Much more compact than most multi-function machines

Uses four separate ink cartridges (3 color + Black) to reduce wastage

Decent quality of printed photos though not really a photo-printer

Allows easy cleaning and alignment via the menu

Very cheap for the functionality: about a hundred bucks after rebates

Cons:

Stops ALL functioning even if a single ink cartridge is empty. Say the Cyan cartridge is empty not only can''t you print in color, you can''t print in black & white either. What''s more you can''t scan or fax either!! This is just bad design!

Sometimes claims the ink cartridge is empty even when there is a little bit sloshing around at the bottom.

Brother Tech support is TERRIBLE!!

By the way I found out details of the maintenance mode for this device after hunting around. This is quite useful, so here it is for anyone that needs it. Anyone getting errors that they can''t get out of (such as shows no ink though ink is there) should try to reinitialize parameters using commands 91 or 01 of the maintenance mode.

Brother Maintenance Mode Commands:

Quickly press Menu/Set * 2 8 6 4 to enter maintenance mode.

Display should read maintenance.

I bought this printer when it first came out. I thought "Ooooo, all in one PLUS an ethernet connection.. YES!!" Being the early adopter with not many reviews to read, I rushed to a retailer and swooped it off the shelf. For a period of 6 months, this was a PLAYER! I had good prints, scans, and copies (never tried the fax machine). Then after the 6 months, the printer developed a bad personality. Some of the "quirks":

1) The printer now tells me on each print-out that it''s out of ink (often, several flavors). I just out the cartridge to reveal a more-than-half-full tank of magenta. Admittedly, these are pretty small tanks, but it''s not empty! I attempted to clear the cartridges nozzle with a cartridge cleaning solution. That worked... for about a day. Then, BEEP BEEP BEEP ***GIVE ME INK!***

And it gets better. If you actually runs out of ink in one of the cartridges... *drumroll* the printer refuses to print, scan, or copy. *cymbal crash* GENIUS! Either this is a ploy to force ink purchases or the engineers suffered from a bad case of stupid.

2) I never did clean the print heads, because the printer was sure to clean itself every day (YUM, YUM, INK!!!) Over time, I had to adjust the print settings to "fine" (instead of normal) to get a decently-clean printout. Otherwise, my printouts were Dali paintings.

3) Admittedly, the printer takes up very little space. This is partially because the #$%*&$*# paper tray can only hold 50 sheets of paper. So, I''ve heard my fair share of BEEP BEEP BEEP ***GIVE ME PAPER***

And this was just at first. Now as the personality of the printer has become stronger, the printer and I often have the following dialog. Fellow 420CN owners can probably relate.

Me: I''ll just print out this article.

420CN: OK... Wait dude, you''re out of Magenta.

Me: (taking out cartridge) Uh, no dude. We''re good on Magenta.

420CN: BEEP BEEP BEEP!!!

Me: Ok ok ok (cleans the magenta cartridge and reinserts it).

420CN: And Yellow!!!

Me: You''ve got to be kidding me... (cleans yellow and reinserts)

420CN: Ok, hang on. I''m bathing in Magenta and Yellow. tra-la-laaaa!!

Me: *sigh*

420CN: BEEP BEEP BEEP

Me: WHAT!!!!!!!

420CN: I can''t print. Check the troubleshooting manual.

Me: For what?

420CN: BEEP BEEP BEEP

Me: (opens scanner cover, closes it)

In conclusion, nothing would please me more than backing a truck over this stinking, steaming pile of flawed electronics. I would advise anyone to avoid buying this printer. If you already have one, I feel your pain. I am now shopping for a replacement. After finding one, I will recreate the printer smashing scene from Office Space. :-)

I have owned this for 4 months and have been pleased thus far, until today. I only use it as a fax and copier. I have a seperate printer at my office so it is not even hoked up to my computer. Today I received the warning that my color cartridges are out of ink, so it totally shuts down. I cannot even send a fax. The problem is that I have never used color. I always copy in black and white, same with the fax. Apparently it cleans itself periodically like a cat and that uses a small amount of ink. It is rated for 400 pages of color, so 100 pages of ink a month just for cleaning seems excessive to me. It is frustrating to spend c.$40 for color even though I never plan on using it. Perhaps those were the sample cartridges that came with it and they did not have the same capacity as standard ones. Other than that, as a fax machine and flatbed copier, it works great. Good value and small size.

Pros: Compact size, Network interface, xD, et al printing, Large ink cartridges, fax compatable with ans machine

Cons: Slow printing, copying, typical cryptic fax tree menu

I looked carefully for this new offering of Brother because of Network connectivity and the small size. It takes half the space of my previous All-in-One Xerox Workcenter, and the fax does not scream at every caller on my line--it just waits for an incoming fax tone before responding ("manual" mode), then it comes to life--even if you pick up the receiver (upstairs), and it even ignores my answering machine. Very Slick! It connects to my computer via USB2 AND network cable, and it can allow faxes to go to the computer instead of printing. For $150, this is a bargain. So far I have no paper jams or problems. Note the limitation of 10 pages in the copy/fax paper feeder, but there is a 100 page paper tray. For home use, this answers my needs completely!

Anyway I just installed a new PG-210 black ink cart. after the original one ran dry in about a month of owning my new MP-240 printer. Not a lot of printed pages but it''s history. Today I printed up some tax forms w/the replacement cart. and it''s already 1/3 down. The Color cart. is about 1/2 down. Such is life I guess.

I feel that the cartridge went dry much too quickly, especially when you consider how much these things cost. But that is the deal, buy the printer for a reasonable price and get shafted on the cartridges. I guess this is why so many people simply buy cartridge ink refill kits and just refill the old cartridge. I think Canon would be wiser to make their own product more reasonably priced. I am sure they do market research and figure at what point they lose market share on refill kits. Having said all this, I am happy with the printer itself.

I am updating this review. I have now gone through one more of these cartridges. Someone said you are supposed to get about 220 pages out of it. I only print for school and have in my notebook all the pages I have ever printed out for the last cartridge save, at most, 5 pages. They don''t come anywhere near this number. I would say it is about 120-150 pages tops. Above I said I was happy with the printer. However, I am no longer happy with a company that thinks taking advantage of its customers is acceptable and therefore I am no longer happy with the printer. I would now tell you to not buy this printer and only buy refill kits if you already have one. I just bought one from Fry''s and it is working fine. Canon can take a flying leap.

I bought a new MX330 to use primarily as a scanner, and to print the occasional photo. I use a cheap Laser printer to print out everything else. If I want to copy something, I scan it to a PDF, and then print it out on the laser.

How do you expect Canon (or anyone else) to sell an all-in-one for a hundred dollars and stay in business? King Gillette made his fortune by giving away the razor and selling the blades. Case closed.

I have had enough of this printer and after 6 months have ordered a Kodak ESP 7250 to replace it. I would not recommend this dell printer to anyone.

After having nothing but trouble with my old Dell printer, I received the Dell 515w. Out of the box, it was nothing but trouble and it took numerous calls to Dell to fix the first time. They gave me a case number for future calls (guess they knew it wouldn''t continue to work) and when it stopped working again I called Dell gave them my case number and got a call back 9 hours later. Finally got it working until I had to replace the ink cartridges. Then the printhead error wouldn''t go away and printhead wouldn''t work. At my insistence (stupid me) they said they would send a new one. After receiving no follow up for 4 days I called Dell only to find out that the model was on "back log". After much insistence about not being satisfied in anyway, they sent me a "step up" the DELL P513w. Guess what, out of the box, it doesn''t work. I''m no newbie to printers or computers and am hardly incompetent, but God bless the poor people who are and buy Dell Printers because they won''t realize that it is Dell and not them that aren''t right. Now I''m griding myself to make yet another call to Dell. How long am I going to be on the phone this time? I will never buy another Dell printer again. Really think it over, cause for every one good review you see on the product, you''ll find more bad ones. They''re lemons across the board. You might get lucky, but then again, you might not.

My first comment is that this is not really a Dell printer and you can see this on installation where it is clear that it is a Lexmark printer.

We purchased this printer for a small office for our color prints -the other printers in the office are monochrome lasersto replace an old HP 9760. The setup is easy, even the WiFi. As I installed the ink for the first time I noticed that cartridges are separate from the print head (i.e. the print-head stays in the printer and you buy only separately only ink "containers").

Very soon the printer started consuming huge amounts of ink, both black and color. It just gobbles down ink and for some cartridges we can''t even get 100 pages printed. Additionally, the first ink cartridges (without a print head!) were extremely expensive. Price has gone down a little in the latter cartridges.

The second problem we have has to do with print quality: very soon after buying the printer the black ink (text) started printing in bands and after numerous cleanings of the print head (which in turn consume lots of ink), the problem is not solved. The printing is readable, but it is certainly not professional looking and there are few things that make a firm look worse than poorly printed letters and reports. We called Dell and they said it has to do with the print head. They said we should do deep cleaning (i.e. more ink consumption) and if this doesn''t solve it, it should be changed. This is right after the 1-year guarantee expired.

One more thing that does not have to do with the printing: the scanner software comes with a neat feature that adds a small app to the folders in Windows and allows you to scan documents directly into that folder. It works very well, but at some point I started noticing that my windows computer''s memory usage was getting out of hand and the computer would eventually freeze (the file using the memory was "explorer.exe"). I searched in the web for a solution to this sudden burst of memory usage by "explorer.exe" to no avail. By some inspiration I decided to uninstall this software and voila! The memory usage went back to normal. I installed the software again and as soon as I used the feature for the first time, "explorer.exe" started increasing in memory usage by the second. I uninstalled the software for good and haven''t had any more memory problems in my computer

In sum, the printer has high ink consumption, very expensive replacement cartridges, poor quality printing do to a worse print-head and the bundled software needs more polishing (to say the least). Overall a very poor machine which I would not recommend purchasing.

We are back to using the HP when we really need excellent quality prints. The 513W we use only for in-house printing, and the scanner, which is good. We are going to let the current cartridges run out of ink and get rid of the printer.

What an annoying product, hard to tighten, hard to install, not very firm, uses VELCRO to mount the laptop. Not very well thought out. I brought this printer as a bet, as i can''t find any review on it yet.

This printer seems only an improved version of the R320 in term of preformance and quality print. But with much easier and better user interface.

What i like the most, the setting in the printer it self allow me to change the diameter of the printable surface of the cd. Some CD/DVD have 42mm hole of non-printable surface in the middle, but some only 21mm.

Btw, the built in color monitor is great too, unlike the R320 where every advertising i''ve ever seen has one but they don''t tell u it comes at extra cost, ''til u buy it.

Overall i''m very happy with this one, and its definitely worth the extra price. For all other pluses of this priter, just refer to the R320 review, its 90% similar ;)

If you by this printer to print to DVD or CD you"ll see "Error..Paper Jam " in your nightmares. It might take 2-3 minutes to print a DVD but plan on another 5-10 fighting with this piece of @#$% printer each time. I bought two of these printers so this is no fluke.

Here''s the full story. Once a year I make from 500-1000 DVDs in the late sping / early summer. Since I do this just once a year I am not willing to buy a robotic duplicator for $2grand plus, besides, I can do a lot more for a lot less by loading up my 3 computers with 2-3 dvd burners. Most automatic system only have one or two. Anyhow for three years I used the Epson Stylus Photo 960 to print, one at a time to DVD. Sure it had a few problems here and there, but nothing cleaning ink off the tray every few months wouldn''t take care off. Well this year it bought the farm. Disc after disc it would smear excessive ink along the bottom of each disc. It would print perfectly up to this point. I could clean nothing to remedy this problem. Epson didn''t care, and there service center here didn''t care either. I''m sure it''s a matter of them being to embarrased to quote me an estimate on repair as it would probabaly at least equal the cost of replacement. Anyhow, I was ticked because I couldn''t get any help and the timing was really bad. But hey, I put probably at least 3000 DVDs through this thing for a lot less money than it would have been to out source or buy a high end professional automatic system. So I guess that''s good. Anyhow, I replaced the 960 with two R340s. I figured $300 is still a lot cheaper than an automated system and I can get my projects finished in half the time. Well first let me say I''m more than a little disappointed that this printer not only doesn''t print faster than my 3yr old 960, but it was actually SLOWER!! Let me clarify...I actually bought the first R340 three weeks before my 960 decided it was done. BTW I got about $100 in ink here for it if anyone has a 960 and is interested. SO anyhow I had the 960 and the first R340 working in the same room for about 3 weeks. The R340 took about an additional 30 seconds per disc to do it''s little in and out song and dance and then finally print, compared to the 960. The 960 was pretty dummy proof on feeding DVDs and took them in flawlessly. The R340 errors on feeding like every 3rd try.

This is a lot to read. I''ll cut to the chase. About 2 days apart from one another each R340 made there printed 100 or so DVDs mark. At that point the feed error and jam errors became constant. It would literally take 10 minutes of screwing with the printer to convince it to print. Eventually both refused to feed the DVD tray in and would flap up the little tray that holds the tray that holds the dvd and that tray would make an aweful noise as it rocketed out scraping below the other tray that for some reason flipped up. After tis happened enough times an error message popped up referring me to the manual which basicaly said if you see this error the printer is @#$%! Well the guy I talked to at Epson said there is defianlty a problem with the printer so they will send I replacement. Well, now that the same crap has happened to R340 #2 I don''t want the replacement! Before I call them on this second printer I will try to return it to the store. Clearly Epson decided the 960 was to good of a printer and that if anyone wanted to print on 100dvds or more they had no business buying one of their printers. Before any smart#$#% would say I shoulda bought a professional printer for such quantites, let me remind you that over the course of three years I put thousands of DVDs through the 960. No where was there any indication that I shouldn''t be able to expect the same from the R340. Printing on DVDs is kinda special and unfortunatly I think Epson is the only one that really makes a consumer one in the inkjet variety but tell me would you buy a regular paper printer if you found out it was only good for printing 100-200 pices of paper. No way!

It''s so disappointing to see a company start making their products so much less reliable.

I bought the R340 to print CDs and DVDs only. If the disc loads correctly, the printer does a magnificent job, but as several other useres have noted, getting it to load is an arduous undertaking. The trick for proper loading is this: after you send the CD/DVD print file to the printer, the feed mechanism will push the tray back out about a quarter of an inch. You must quickly push it back in by hand, before the feeder grabs the tray again, or it will misfeed every time and generate an error condition. With a little practice, you get so that it will feed correctly maybe half the time.

A friend of mine has an R320 and he reports the same exact problem with his printer. Even though we both know what to do, it still misfeeds frequently. I''m sure Epson engineers could fix the internal software if they wanted to, but with no competetion in the CD/DVD printer market, there''s no incentive to make it work right.

Another problem: the printer software allows disk image to be "whitened" on the computer screen so that the picture can be aligned with the disc''s printable surface boundries. Whiting is there only as a visual aid to to the user, but if he forgets to turn the whiting off before printing, the image will be printed on the disc so light that it''s almost invisible! (If this happens to you, just turn the whiting OFF, push the carrier tray back in, and print the disk again. The darker image will directly overlay the lighter one, but you must be VERY CAREFUL NOT TO MOVE THE DISC in between.) Again, this minor bug could be easily fixed in the software by automatically turning the whiting OFF any time the PRINT command is received, but Epson simply doesn''t care if it works right or not.

All-in-all, I reluctantly put up with this printer''s quirky behavior because when it finally DOES work right, the results are beautifully printed DVDs and CDs. There''s a real opportunity here for another manufacturer to offer a CD/DVD printer that really does the job RIGHT, and steal the market away from an unresponsive Epson.

But not without "some" effort.

The problem was the printer driver that came on the CD appears to not to work with Mac OS 10.4.x.

Calling Epson for help is difficult, there''s a lot of button pushing involved and it seems like you must answer unnecessary questions endlessly before you actually get help. I think they would save time if they "just helped you" even though that might result in helping people who had the product more than 12 months. (A plus for Epson, the support person I "finally" spoke to was in the United States.)

As a Mac user, you probably only want two pieces of software from Epson. The printer driver (check their web site to see that you have the latest one), and EPSON Print CD. EPSON Print CD Is a decent program that will allow you to print to a CD or DVD, (you must use printable CDs / DVDs). Other companies also make a similar program at a fairly low cost.

Some people have a habit of throwing away the install software and just downloading everything "fresh" from a company''s Web site. Don''t do that with the Epson R340, for some reason the EPSON Print CD program is not available for download!

The approach that worked for me was to install the latest driver from the Epson Web site and then use the install CD to install the EPSON Print CD program.

If you register this product, be sure to indicate that your using a Macintosh.

A good point for Epson, the printer is made in the Philippines NOT Communist China.

In general, this is a GREAT printer. The picture printing is very impressive when using the right paper, and the text printing is laser quality.

Now, on to the best, yet most frustrating feature of this line of printers, direct CD/DVD printing.

I too have had my share of feed issues with the Epson CD tray on several different printers (R200, R220, R340), but I have just discovered and solved the most frustrating of them, the one T.J. Vondrell is evidently having. The tray was being drawn in too far at the beginning of a CD print job, causing the subsequent ejection cycle to push the tray out UNDER the drop-down tray platform. I found that the sideways-mounted roller on the right side of the platform was sticking. The associated microswitch at that roller is what stops the initial insertion, at which point indexing using an optical reader commences as the reader looks at the white marks on the tray. When the roller springs back out as the tray clears it on the initial insertion, the tray is stopped, and the indexing begins. If it sticks, the tray just keeps on going out the back of the printer, and the printer generates all those frustrating error messages, not to mention the grinding sound of the tray coming back out of place under the tray platform. A VERY brief shot of WD40 using the provided spray straw to the roller fixed ALL tray issues with my 2nd brand new R340. I will now apply the same lube job to my other Epson printers. I hope this tidbit relieves a lot of frustration from you other Epson users. This is an easy fix, and one that Tech Support at Epson should be well aware of, but apparently isn''t, as I now have a new R340 sent as a replacement for my 1st one that was doing the same thing. I have emailed them, and I hope they post it on their FAQ page. This fix should apply to all Epson printers that have a similar drop-down CD tray platform.

P.S. As a rule now, I try to remember to give the tray a slight nudge as the CD print job begins. This should help extend the life of the somewhat weak roller system that pulls the tray in. I have a couple of well-used R-series printers that now require this assist, or the tray will not be drawn in.
