I decided to get an Epson Artisan after reading what digital photographers said about the quality of its photo prints and looking at some samples prints at a local store. I was somewhat wary of reports that the Artisans were "ink hogs." Although I''ve used HP printers for many years, I was willing to give Epson a try. I''ve been very satisfied with my decision.
Setting up the 835 was a breeze. I have it networked to three wireless laptops, two wired desktop PCs and a wireless desktop PC. I was pleasantly surprised that installing Epson''s software was fast and easy. The first test I performed was making a 4 x 6 print of a photo that I''d never been able to get quite right with my HP printer. To my amazement, the 835 produced a flawless print on the first attempt without any adjustments. I immediately tried some other prints, including a few 8 x 10s. Only in one case in which an image was not properly cropped did I feel the need to make more than one print. Printing photos is now a joy.
I found the scanner fast and easy to use. The scanning results are also impressive. The ability to create and print labels for CDs and DVDs is a welcome capability. The fax, duplexer, document feeder and PictBridge port (which can double as a USB charger) are useful features. The touch screen menu is very intuitive.
Although I think the Artisan 835 is worthy of five stars, it''s not perfect. The paper drawer is flimsy and the simple act of properly aligning paper in it can be a pain. In printing two-sided documents on plain paper -even when using 24-pound paper -the ink sometimes bleeds or shows through. If document printing is your primary use, you might be happier with an HP printer. The 835 is a large printer, so make sure you have plenty of space before you buy it.
The most important thing I''ve learned is that when it comes to photo printers, "ink hog" is a relative term. Although the cost of prints produced by my HP C6280 are slightly less than those printed with the Artisan 835, the fact that I can almost always produce a high-quality print on the first attempt makes the overall cost of the 835''s ink far less. For digital photographers who want an all-in-one that produces fantastic prints, the Artisan 835 is tough to beat.

I have had several printers made by Epson, Canon and HP and never had the difficulties I have had with this machine with paper handling. The design of the paper handling tray is terrible. It is awkward to load and constantly spits out several blank sheets along with the printed copy even after fanning the paper before loading. At times it picks up one of the 4 x 6 photo paper in the photo paper tray even though it is suppose to print on the 8 1/2 x 11 sheets. It won''t print thicker (64 lb) sheets or on file folder stock (the other printers had no problem). It does print well when these problems don''t take over. It drinks up ink (expected) but must be replaced after 6 months. It can cost as much as $95 to replace the ink cartridges from Epson. Their tech service people are very difficult to understand and there is usually a long waiting period to talk to someone and you pay for the call!!!! I am not a computer expert and usually something goes wrong everytime I buy something to add to the computer. I bought this machine two days ago and followed the provided instructions to hook it up and install the software. Everything went perfect, no hiccups. Today I decided I''d copy a colored 4 x 6 picture. I put it on the scanner and used the touchscreen to set up the printer, no problems. I pushed start and away we go! In no time I had a beautiful copy of the photo. It is so simple to use its amazing. Trust me, if I can do it anyone can. This is a machine, not a household printer. I always had HP and decided to try Epson because I have a home theater projector that is flawless and professional. I will never buy another brand. This machine is heavy duty, not some cheap household lightweight junk. You will be amazed if you buy one, in a good way. I have been browsing for an all-in-one printer to replace my broken HP 5150 and decided to try out this EPSON; after owning the printer for one month, I have mixed views on the model. In terms of the quantity of printing I have done in that time, I have used up the sample photo papers that were included with the printer, and a little over 100 pages of a variety of documents, most of which were PowerPoint presentations and PDF documents at "Text" (medium-quality, standard text printing) quality.Let me start with the POSITIVE:
-The features, for the most part, work as advertised and without any fuss. The auto-duplex mode is great and I have not had problems with paper jams. There was only one occasion when the printer would feed two pieces of paper as opposed to one when it printed out a document; but it works without problems otherwise.
-The print speed is very good (noticeably faster than the HP 5150) and the quality is as well (at least on par with the HP). The photos I printed were of excellent quality!
-One of the main features in which I was interested was printing directly onto CD/DVD. I use Roxio Label Creator for this purpose, not the included EPSON software, and that did take some trial-and-error before I figured out what settings I needed to use. But once I found those, it has been terrific!
-Copying quality is excellent and scanning speed is adequate, and additional features like printing ruled papers is terrific (though printing two-sided ruled papers automatically would be even better)!
With respect to thoughts on what COULD USE IMPROVEMENT:
-The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is very useful for copying or scanning numerous pages in one go; unfortunately, I have not found a two-sided scanning/copying option, which would have made the process even better. But this is only a minor grievance.
-The wireless setup has been a mixed experience; it works without problems on one of my machines, but not on another, even though the EPSON network setup says it recognizes the printer on the network and I have made several attempts to set up the computer for printing and scanning.
-One of the major problems I have with the printer is that when a single ink cartridge is empty, it will no longer print any documents, even when choosing grayscale or black-and-white. This is inconvenient in case you don''t have replacement cartridges readily available and need to print something, even if it isn''t in color.
-The price of the cartridges is sure to raise an eyebrow. I already had to spend $80 for a new set of colored ink, and it''s only been a month. The ink I bought for the HP was only half that price. Granted, the initial installation is said to deplete a bit of the ink, and I did print several photos. With that said, I consider my printing quantity and content to be average, so $80/month is substantial.
The BOTTOM LINE:
If you are looking for a printer that offers many features for the money, this is a great model! It offers great printing quality, speed, and all-around functionality.
If you are looking for economy for moderate to frequent printing, the price and life of the ink is a bit troublesome. This is a major point of contention for me, which is why I could not give this model a higher rating.

I just installed EPSON Artisan 835, a replacement for my EPSON Photo Stylus 1200 wide format. It is a great all in one device. Excellent print quality, sleek design with small foot print compare to other competitors. I would have given 5 stars but I had 2 issues and one concern.1)The setup for FAX was not clear specially when an answering machine is involved. Luckily I had installed EPSON Workforce 500 model for my parents a while ago, and their manual had clear illustration of the setup. This manual is confusing with no clear illustration, I compared both printers Quick Guide manual and the wording was clearly different, and was not clear and subject to interpretation.
2)After installing the software from the included CD, I had to download several updates, drivers and utilities which were not on the CD. They were not organized in a manor that will take away the assumption, which one I need and which I don''t. That consumed over an hour of time to decide, download and install. I was lucky I''m on a MAC, but installing on wife''s PC with Windows it was more torturous and time consuming. I wish they''ll improve it by either packaging all updated into one download (they have it, but it does not contain all utilities).
My concern is; too much use of plastic parts, all brands use them, they are delicate and if one is care less they can easily be broken, and cause you aggravation of getting it fixed or living with it. My old Photo Stylus 1200 had much sturdier plastic parts than this all in one, also my Samsung laser printer paper tray is solid, it has some plastic but mostly light metal. I understand they want to keep the price down, but they should consider using more sturdier material for most common used areas of the printer, specially the paper tray, the exit pullout tray, I''m afraid to exert any force when pulling, from fear of breaking it.
