Brother Printer HL5470DW Wireless Monochrome Printer Save 20% off

Brother Printer HL5470DW Wireless Monochrome Printer
  • Prints up to 40ppm
  • Built-in wireless 802.11b/g/n and Ethernet network interfaces
  • Automatic duplex (two-sided) printing
  • 300-sheet standard paper capacity, expandable
  • Backlit LCD display allows for easy navigation and menu selection

I purchased this printer about 2 weeks ago and am very satisfied with it. It replaced a Lexmark E260DN. The Brother is noticeably quieter, slightly faster, can print from IOS devices (eg. iPad) and has much lower toner costs. A few years ago I also had a Brother HL-5250DN laser printer. It was a great printer, BUT after I upgraded to Windows 7 it would change its IP address when the computer was re-booted. To say the least that was annoying and I could not find a fix. Of course that is only a problem if you are using it as a network printer.

The new HL-5470DW has no problems what-so-ever. It is setup as a network printer in my home via Ethernet cable. I set the resolution to 600 DPI and configured for toner saver mode. Even with these settings the print quality is very good. Envelopes print perfectly with no wrinkles.

Toner costs are reasonable. Here on Amazon a Brother TN720 3,000 page toner cartridge is about $60 (2 cents/page) and a Brother 8,000 page TN750 toner cartridge costs about $100 (1.25 cents/page). To put this in perspective, the toner costs for most laser printers range from 3-5 cents per page and ink costs for inkjet printers can easily exceed 10 cents per page for text.

I would definitely buy this printer again and recommend it highly.

Bought this a month ago, so take all this as an early report. That said, got it on sale for a good price and no cause for regret yet. Bought this to replace a Canon multi-function inkjet that had a bad print head. Tired of the expense of the ink and the bulk of the device. I''ve got a small scanner on my desk now to cover scanning and most copying. Who needs a fax these days. Got the Brother home, unpacked, plugged in and less than 30 minutes later was printing from every computer in the house including my PC, a windows laptop, my wife''s Mac and my iPad. I''m reasonably tech-savvy, but no expert. I just followed the instructions and it was done. Print quality is beautiful. Starts printing around 6-8 seconds after hitting the print command. Auto-duplex works well. I don''t notice any excessive curling, though I''m not using this for business presentations. Prints envelopes, at least one at a time, just fine. Some curl, but quickly relaxes and no other issues as had been described for previous versions. The auxiliary feed is on the front, which makes my life easier at least as the printer is tucked away under my desk. Not much else to say at this point--simply that set up was easy, print quality is very good, speed is quite fast, and I anticipate using this for a long time. I wish my office printer worked as well and as fast.

Just got this printer delivered and set up today. Works very well. No problem setting up (with Ethernet connection). Printed lettering is of very high quality, fine detailing. Haven''t tried any graphics yet. Fast printer, not too noisy, silent when "asleep". Prints envelopes fine, just have to use MP Tray and open printer''s back cover for a straight through printing path. Cannot feed more than three envelopes at a time though. Various options for different paper types and fuser heats if needed. So far I''m very satisfied. Will post again if my opinion changes with use.

New comment (September 9, 2012): Having now used this printer for a few weeks, I''m persuaded it is a very good printer and would buy it again. Note that this printer seems to draw a lot of power for an instant when just starting to print. My lights dim a bit for a moment not a big problem for me but could be for someone with less robust electrical circuitry.

As other reviewers have said, this printer has a power problem when it starts up initially (and apparently every time it wakes to start printing but I can''t comment on that because I never got it booted completely) by drawing enough amps to trip a 20amp circuit breaker. I tried three (3) different outlets, on different circuits, all with the same results. When I powered it on, it would start to power up and then within 3 seconds trip the breaker. No other appliance has ever tripped one of our breakers in our 8 year old house.

I even tried plugging it into a UPS thinking that would buffer the load but it didn''t, same thing. So, unfortunately this printer is going back to Amazon and I''ll continue searching for a network laser printer (wired or wireless) that supports AirPrint.

this is the fastest printer i have ever had, it even does duplex printing and prints the front and back simultaneously! its amazing! but it does pull a lot of electricity and it made my lights flash! it even broke my backup battery thing that has 8 outlets! =(

Moab Entrada Rag Fine Art, 2-Side Natural Matte Inkjet Paper

Moab Entrada Rag Fine Art, 2-Side Natural Matte Inkjet Paper, 22.5 mil., 300gsm, 8.5x11'', 25 Sheets.I used this paper to print an architectural portfolio using a Canon 9900. Line drawings, graphics, and photos render beautifully on this paper. B&W photography look especially good. It lacks the cold blue tint of many 300gsm matts, and it has a natural luminescence that make prints pop out. My only complaint is its coarseness to the touch.

Simply put Moab paper is not manufactured consistently. The quality can vary wildly and the people that run the company won''t own up to that fact. If you get a good batch of paper the quality is excellent for the price point. However, I have printed on quite a bit of Kayenta and Entrada that exhibits many and varied surface defects. Coating that flakes off; faint surface abrasion that isn''t noticeable until you print an image with a lot of ink density (read skid marks in the shadows) and loads of dust in some rolls that can make a general mess of your printer and your prints (invariably the dust blocks ink making it to the surface of the paper and when if finally moves you are left with a white spot). Hahnemühle paper is more expensive but by the time you get done pitching all the screwed up prints you end up with when using Moab products I''d say the cost is the same (especially if you count your time and frustration). Having worked in a darkroom for years I expect my inkjet paper to be as reliable as my photo paper. Not so with Moab. For a budget proofing paper try the Illuminata available through Inkjet Art and the papers available through Red River. Both brands are head and shoulders above Moab with regard to quality control.

This is my paper of choice when printing matte. I have used it for several years and not experienced the "dust" problem reported by others. Of course, I always lightly brush it off before use. This is a top quality paper which I strongly recommend.

I use this paper (also the 13 x 19 size) with a Canon pro9000mk2 to reproduce paintings. It works beautifully for my purposes, and the color profile provided by Moab on their web site is spot on for me. The paper is heavy, ever so lightly textured, and completely matte. So far all Moab papers I''ve tried have been great. Only problem is that I have found a few flaws on some sheets, light vertical lines in the texture of the paper, and occasionally a small dark spot. If not for that, I''d give 5 stars! If you are new to using a cotton rag fine art paper, I recommend getting a drafting brush such as http://www.amazon.com/Alvin-2341-Dusting-Brush-14-5/dp/B000HF6K9S/ and lightly dusting each sheet before printing to get rid of any stray cotton fibers that could create a white spot on the print.

HP LaserJet 1160 Monochrome Printer

HP LaserJet 1160 Monochrome Printer
  • Up to 1,200 dpi effective output
  • Up to 20 ppm speed, first page out in less than 10 seconds
  • 133 MHz Motorola processor, 16 MB RAM
  • 10,000-page per month duty cycle
  • Parallel and USB 2.0 interfaces; PC and Mac compatible

Pros:

Dramatically improved design

Improved print quality

Speedy output

Small footprint

Solid paper handling

Cons:

More expensive than competitors

Cryptic LED status lights

Does not accept higher capacity toner

Flimsy single-sheet multipurpose input tray

Poorly written printer driver and installer

No printed manual (only PDF file on the CD)

HP LaserJet 1160 is a feature-stripped version of LaserJet 1320, replacing LaserJet 1150 and LaserJet 1300, respectively. 1160 and 1320 share the same engine and chassis (1320 features white-with-black-accents whereas 1160 is all-white). Perhaps the most dramatic change from 1150 and 1300 is a redesigned chassis. They no longer resemble DeskJet''s L-shape box with protruding input paper tray, infamous for causing paper to curl up if many sheets are stacked on its output bin. Both 1160 and 1320 now look more professional and spiffier, all the while occupying even less desk space.

More subtle but just as dramatic is improved print quality. 1150 and 1300 were criticized for worse print quality than their predecessor (LaserJet 1200). 1160 restores the former glory with improved print quality. Graphics and photo outputs look noticeably smoother than LaserJet 1150 and 1300 with less noticeable dithering. Text looks sharp, and it looks slightly better defined in 600 dpi with FastRes 1200 turned off (graphics look far better with it turned on, however).

If you need more reasons to justify 10% price increase over 1150, how about 10% faster print speed? With double the memory (16 MB vs. 8 MB) and smaller footprint (measures about 14 inches by 14 inches vs. 16 inches by 19 inches), 1160 represents a superior value.

That said, 1160 could''ve been better. 1160 loses 1150''s 10-sheet multipurpose input tray (1160 accepts only 1 sheet at a time). And multipurpose single sheet input tray feels a bit flimsy, although 250-sheet input tray feels very sturdy and should last a long time. And according to HP, 1160 can accept only the standard capacity toner (prints 2,500 pages at 5% coverage). Also disappointing are LED status lights (LCD alphanumeric display would have been more informative).

I have 1160 connected to Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (via USB port) so that I can print wirelessly. Apple PowerBook G4 (Mac OS X 10.3.5), IBM ThinkPad A31 (Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2), and Compaq Presario X1000 (Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2) notebooks share the network and printer.

Included Windows installer did not make installation process any easy. If the printer is NOT directly connected to the computer via USB or parallel port, it will not let you install the driver (Mac OS X installer is more forgiving). Network detect feature did not work and I suspect it works only with JetDirect option. After reading the manual on the CD, I have discovered a workaround. Manually add the printer as a local printer, create a new TCP/IP port and specify wireless router''s IP address (10.0.1.1 in my case), then click "Have Disk" to install the driver manually. The manual points to wrong directory path. The correct path for English-based Windows XP driver is English\Drivers\Win2003_XP\PCL5.

The driver is not any better. It is not that printer driver itself is that bad (although I have found few minor bugs). My issue is with hp toolbox, an application that supplements the driver. It is written in Java with embedded Apache web server (talk about bloated!). It feels rather sluggish with ugly interface.

That said, the printer works well and hp toolbox should not detract you from using the printer to full potential. And Mac OS X support is nice. When you print, a photo realistic LaserJet 1160 icon appears on the dock showing which page is printing.

If you are looking for true 1200 dpi printing (1160 prints at 600 dpi, only emulating 1200 dpi via REt and FastRes technologies), expandable memory, PCL 6 and emulated PostScript 2 compatibility (1160 supports only PCL 5e), automatic duplex printing, and higher capacity toner compatibility (6,000 pages at 5% coverage), consider 1320.

I''m delighted with this printer. It''s wonderfully compact and fits in tight spaces. The printer quality is excellent and it really feels solid. I expect it to be as reliable and long-lasting as my previous printer, an HP LaserJet 6MP. This printer worked right out of the box with my Macintosh running OS X 10.3.x and I suspect that setup for Windows is equally painless. Yes, it''s a little more expensive than comparable laser printers, but I think that over time the slighly greater inital investment will have been worth it.

Pros: It will print. Easy initial set-up.

Cons: It has problems printing fonts other than Courier. The way the paper in the tray loads makes it a problem to print sequential single pages (like check stock, think anything already numbered). The manual feed slot is almost worthless.

The font problem is caused, according to HP, by the driver for the printer. It is faulty, and even though HP has released an updated driver, that does not fix the problem. As of June 1, 2005, HP''s fix for the font problem is to tell you to load software from another one of their printers (which means you lose some of the funtionality of this new printer).

The manual feed is for one piece of paper at a time and is just a slot no tray or feeder support.

There are cheaper printers that will perform the same functions as this printer, without all the font issues. If I could re-purchase, I would just purchase the HP LaserJet 1012 Printer again.

The device is made adequately well but not as well as the HP line starting at street price $600-800 or the printers selling in the $900-1300 range, which are known workhorses, but at 4 times the cost.

Setup is easy, especially for those who use higher grade HP printers at work and know how to load and activate the toner cartridge.

I bought two of these for my twins who entered college this fall. USB setup worked fine but required loading of drivers, which is from a supplied CD, on one child''s PC, whereas the Apple machine installed totally without intervention.

The print quality is claimed at 1200 DPI and indeed appears to be so. I performed some complex registration tests consisting of running print through the machine several times on the same paper and found registration to be first rate -excellent.

The lack of a support table on the paper feeder, such as the more expensive models have, made feeding of labels and other single sheet jobs, as well as envelopes, much more difficult than it needed to be. It is unlikely that the addition of an easily accessed single page feed support would have increased the manufacturer''s cost more than a few dollars; that negligibly higher price would have been well worth the dollars in user convenience.

I did not explore the energy saving modes and cannot comment on them, but the 1160 is Energy Star rated.

Not enough experience with the supplied toner cassette to state whether it actually delivers the promised 1,500 pages at the coverage percent indicated in the claim. A purchased toner cartridge thereafter will produce many more copies. Also am wondering if the 1160 model is plagued by a timing chip on the cartridge, which I am told disables the ability to employ a cartridge right down to the last spoonful of powder when the manufacturer''s "expiration date/freshness date" has been exceeded. You can read about those chips in PC and similar magazines.

Those using the HP office printers know that rocking along two axes can redistribute toner and permit virtually 100% use of the supplied amount when the toner gets down to those final few milligrams.

The machine interior is (not surprisingly) finished more cheaply, and the chassis is more crowded, than the pricier models, so removal of paper jams is slower and less un-invasive of the operator''s time. However, continually more crowded chassis interiors has been a problem in HP and virtually all other machines for years now -every manufacturer wants the smallest footprint without regard for how that will inconvenience the user in the long run.

Overall, a much better deal for the college student not reqiring color printing than is an ink jet, where the ink costs will start to rival tuition costs before long.

HG Review written September 11, 2005 (09/11/05)

I have always been skeptical of printers it seems that whenever you need them most they malfunction. This is not the case for the HP LaserJet 1160. I have waited over 1 month from purchase to do this review just to make sure that it continued to deliver its fine performance... and it has!

What I like about the 1160

VERY fast even the most complex documents are printed in a matter of seconds.

Extremely Quiet the 1160 runs almost without any type of noise... just a low hum and *poof* your document is printed.

To date (knock on wood) I have not had a single jam! This is unheard of... no paper jams!

Great value with the rebate the 1160 cost about $250, which seemed like an exceptional value.

Setting-up and connecting to my laptop was a breeze.

In short, in the one month that I have owned the 1160I do not have a single complaint. Trust me... I NEVER thought I would say that about any printer. This is the one printer you can buy and not have to worry about.

First time ordering this paper, I was tired of the non-recycled papers at all my local office supply stores so I found this cute little company. The paper comes packaged in a plain paper wrapper, not a fancy package like the picture shows (it doesn''t matter to me but I though I should mention it). If you need a pure white, smooth paper then this is not the paper for you. It''s more for letters and documents rather than pictures since it is a light "natural" color and has a subtle texture to it (like the texture that some drawing paper has). At first it ran fine through my printer but I discovered that if I leave the paper in my upright tray the paper curls and then my printer has a lot of trouble feeding it. It has trouble grabbing just one sheet and when it does grab one it enters crooked. I''ve managed to mostly fix this by just keeping my stack of paper in my scanner bed with the lid closed to keep it flat. When I print I''ll take the paper out that I need and put it in the printer and it''ll grab it just fine. I''m not sure if this problem is more of a paper flaw or a printer flaw (I have an epson small-in-one). It seems like it''s more porous than regular printer paper, it sucks the ink right up but still looks crisp.

I really like this paper, it would be great if I can find it in stock near me but if not I plan to re-order when I run out.

Quality paper. Holds up much better then typical paper. Works fine in my printer, though I don''t do a lot of printing. I carry a list in my wallet of things I need to get done and this paper stands up to being folded and unfolded, at least three times better then regular printer paper -I have a list here that''s four months old, no place left to write and it does have dogged edges and some crease splits but it''s just tenaciously holding out. I''m sitting down here to print an update and of course one of the items on my list is feedback on this purchase. I don''t do a lot of printing, so I figured I could justify the cost. Can''t print without paper and I had to buy something -glad to have an option with hemp in it. Feels like it would be great for hand written letters too. I''ve read that hemp doesn''t yellow as quickly as wood paper. I''m happy with this. Positive experience.

I would have left five star feedback on my purchase, but I could not get the feedback to post for some reason. Shipping was fast. I emailed seller on the feedback issue and did get a response, seemed very human to deal with.

Thanks all.

Be real, be sober.

Original HP 940XL Black Officejet Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging and the Original HP 940XL Yellow Officejet Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging are always the best way to go, as these are the colors that tend to run out first. If you are thinking of purchasing a CMYK printer in my experience they purge so much ink just calibrating and getting started you are wasting sometimes more that it''s worth, as they are VERY EXPENSIVE to replace. I did get a good break here at Amazon. I find if you have a simple HP office or deskjet printer the black ink with the tri-color is fine unless you are doing volume photo printing. DYMO LabelWriter LW330 Turbo Label Printer

DYMO LabelWriter LW330 Turbo Label Printer
  • Print labels without a printer
  • Does not use ribbons, toner, or ink cartridges
  • Resolution of 300 dots per inch
  • Prints labels up to 2.3 inches wide
  • Prints label in 2 seconds

I have to admit I was very hesitant to purchase this; in many cases, even when a product claims Mac compatibility it usually is just a bare-bones port. When DYMO released v60-something of their software for Mac OS 10 (10.2, Jaguar) I decided to give it a shot. Man, am I glad I did.

This simple little device saves a lot of time. It works from most major programs, but I find a quick copy & paste into the DYMO Label program is just as quick.

Labels print in a second or two after hitting the print button (use the Preferences to bypass the Print Command Window altogether, BTW). This saves a lot of time (and cost) in regards to full-sheet Avery-type labeling.

I''ve only played around with the large format Shipping Labels (DYMO 30256, 2 5/16 x 4) but there''s a wealth of sizes and shapes available.

Images as well as text print sharp, depending on format of the image. I''ve done all sorts of client labels as well using their labels for them; they''re all quite happy with the quality and I believe more than one has purchased one of these.

The only problem I''ve come across is address book saving; I can''t seem to get it to save an address. I''m probably missing something but, as mentioned above, it''s just as easy to do a quick copy & paste, for instance, from OS 10''s own Address Book (which would seem to be the ideal program for DYMO to tie into).

Pros:

Quick

Clean

Seamless OS 10 connectivity

Sharp images as well as text (when using proper formats)

Cons:

A little pricey (but honestly worth it)

Noisy (but only for the few seconds it prints)

Not color (but, c''mon, it''s thermal!)

This specialized label printer is simple to set up, easy to use, and takes up very little space on the desk highly recommended.

A few cautionary notes:

1. when printing from Outlook the program only recognizes business addresses

2. the thermal printing labels you must use with this printer aren''t exactly cheap

3. the template provided for use in Word reinstalls itself by modifying the default document template each time you open Word, which is annoying if you have Word set to notify you before saving the default template.

Otherwise I am completely satisfied with this printer and expect to use it for many years.

I''ve owned a laser printer since the first HP IIP came out almost 15 years ago. It''s always been handy to print labels for letters, packages, etc. on my laser printer. However, I''ve always had to use a whole sheet of labels to print just one and then reuse the sheet. What a mess. This product ends those problems! I''m a gadet lover and this product is the best gadet I think I have ever purchased! It prints a single label in about 2 secs. Faster than I can reach to get a label it''s already printed. This thing is fast! And the quality is superb! On top of that the software''s not bad either. And if you don''t like the included software you can print from Word or Outlook. No more messing with a whole sheet of labels-I just print the one label I need and I''m done!

I looked at the Seiko label printer as well. Ths printer is a little bigger (not enough to matter) and the resolution is so much better. I''m telling you-this is the best product I have ever purchased! And it only took me 15 years to get it!

Hi,

I have a Powermac G4 and a powerbook + an airport express.

This thing is great, it is plugged into the powermac. I just selected "share printers" from the System Settings menu.

When we want to print a label we can do it from either computer in seconds. The Dymo software works well on the mac and we can print directly from address book.

First, I do not use the software included. I use the LabelWriter with FileMaker, so it took me a bit longer to set up a layout that prints perfectly onto the labels. I only use the file folder labels, and I simply go to my FileMaker file, type in one or several labels and click print. As soon as the print dialog goes away (about 2 seconds), the LabelWriter Turbo 330 starts rolling out labels. It is great for printing folder labels one at a time.

Also, I like the fact that it does not take a print cartridge, so i dont know how long it will last, but I''ve been using mine over a year with no problem.

If you are kind of obsessive about having all of your file folders organized and labeled neatly, this is the printer for you. It''s very fast (about twice as fast as my old LabelWriter 300, which finally wore out after about 2-3 years of use). It does work, you will enjoy using it.

I was surprised when I got a great deal on this paper. It was 98 brightness and I didn''t pay a high premium price for it. Xerox is great paper for my Epson printer. It is brighter than 95 and cheaper than HP premium paper which is OK. Paper from Xerox is usually good because it makes prints look great from a long time name in printing.

I didn''t pay $16.00 for it either and prints proofs of my artwork before I send them out

for canvas printing. Vivid colors and I would buy it again. High quality, a bargain price! and a trusted name. It made better prints than my HP 95 white did. I was pleasantly surprised when I found it was 98 brightness Premium Quality!

OK, I would actually go for more of a 3 1/2 star rather than a 3 or 4. (UPDATE: I would go with more of a 4 1/2 after a week of use and getting used to how this works and figuring in how it fits into the home.)

First off this is a home device. This is not something that you want for an office. That being said, if you have it in your mind that this is a device for the home, then your perceptions of this will change.

Also this a hybrid device, so as such, you really have to look at each part and see if they are worth it.

The printer sans touchscreen. The printer itself can be used to Scan, Copy and Print, all wirelessly, and with a built in double sided printing module. The prints seem to look good and it prints fast. Photo prints looked fairly good as well. Replacement ink cartridges run around $10 for the regular capacity (bout 300 prints) to around $27 for the XL (about 750 prints). I do like that each color has its own cartridge so you only need to replace what you run out of. I can even use the HP iPrint app on my iPod touch and print PDFs, and photos from there. I can also scan directly to the iPod using the App. When Apple does the Airprint in the new iOS 4.2 it should also support printing from many more apps. What was especially neat was that when I used Docs to Go and choose to open a PDF from there in the iPrint app, I could print it. The printer also has the ability to use the ePrint feature without the tablet, which enables just about anything sent to a specific email address for your printer to print. Say you were at a local hotspot reading an article that lets you email it to somebody . . you need to go and want a copy of the article for some reason . . just email it to your printer and when you get home it will be there in the paper tray waiting when you get home. Overall, I would compare this to other $200 to $250 dollar printers out there for this functionality. However while I''m doing all this, somebody could be using the tablet to browse the web.

Which leads to a brief review of the tablet itself. Now I''ve used an iPad and let me tell you this is no iPad. That being said, a better comparison would be other $150 android based tablets out there that are this size. (UPDATE: I would compare this more with a NOOK with some extra bells and whistles I talked to a manager at the local staples about it. He stated that he was just at a conference where the HP rep indicated it would have more android capabilities towards the first part of 2011).

It has the standard Android buttons, headphone jack, volume up and down, power, a mini USB port, and SD card slot. The screen is like that of an iPod or iPad in that it is based on the touch receptive glass (not sure of the fancy technical name for this). Yahoo and Barns & Noble must have paid a bundle as it is very centric to them, which is a annoying at first, but you can actually remove or at least hide some of this by customizing your home screens and favorite apps. Also if you start thinking of it as a 7" Nook with some extras then you''ll be happier. Fortunately there is a generic email client under the hood so that you can set it up with something other than Yahoo Mail (almost returned it right there). I have it set up for both my wife''s and my Gmail accounts and we can switch accounts easily to see our mail. There are a handful of apps built in that are nice such as QuickOffice for viewing MS Office files (no editing tho) and PDFs. There''s also a calculator, web browser, RSS News feader (limited though),and a Facebook app that I like better than the one on my iPod Touch. There are also a number of other apps that are not the Print Apps. I Would like to see a Twitter App, and a YouTube App as well as some simple games like Sudoku, or even a (cough cough) a Kindle App.

HP has it''s own custom Android skin and you can only download apps that it has listed. Most of which are the ePrint Apps as they call them. There are lots of these for all the different holidays, kids activities, recipes, etc. When you consider this a home device, these apps can be nice to quickly print off an activity for the kids to do if they are driving you nuts and none of the coloring books you have are good enough for them as . . oh sorry . . .let me get back on focus. I''ve never been a big facebook user, mostly as I don''t care enough to take the time to turn on my computer and I don''t care for the app on the iPod. I''ve actually check my facebook a couple of times this weekend and even replied to my sister for once. Anyway. the device can be a bit sluggish when using the web browser or news headline apps, but seems fairly responsive in the email, facebook, reading ebooks, and eprint apps. You can also print from the device when it''s not docked, and control scanning as well. By the way, YES you can scan photos directly to an inserted SD card slot. This can be handy when grandma comes by with photos she''s taken and didn''t think about getting you a copy or getting you the digital file. Just pop''em in and scan them to the SD card. No need to turn on the computer.

When the tablet is connect you can then do eFax as well. No remember this is a HOME device and not an office device. Because you can send/receive 20 faxed pages per month for free. After that you can still do more, but there is a charge for it. That being said, in the past 2 years I''ve rarely sent or received and faxes. Only when we were taking advantage of the lower rates and decided to refinance our house. I probably went over, but there is no phone line where we have our printers set up and with the previous print/scan/copy/fax, I would have to pull a very taut phone line to it, make sure the kids weren''t anywhere around to run it to the line and knock it all over, and pray that it would work. For me the 20 page monthly limit of efax is a non issue and is actually a plus. (UPDATE: I was also looking at Windows 7 and there is a built in fax application there. I can plug my laptop into a phone line and scan wireless the documents as a PDF and attach them to the fax. I little bit more fuss than using a doc feeder as you scan each page separately BUT that''s all I really need.)

Would I buy this for an office? Absolutely NO.

Would I buy this again for the home? Probably. Mind you, I''ve only had this two days. I like what I''ve seen so far, but I still feel guilty about spending this much money. It is really cool tho. (UPDATE: Yes I would buy it again, provided I like the idea of getting a bundle of the Printer with essentially a powered up Nook with some extra capabilities.)

(UPDATE: After using the printer several days I was having a problem with ePrint from HP saying that the printer wasn''t connected for email printing even though everything worked in my house. After reading the forums, I ended up disabling the power saver using the IP address for the printer in my home network. Then turning the printer itself (not the Zeen) off then back on and it has been up and running since. Seems like this is a problem with the printer going to sleep and HP''s servers not being able to wake it up to print remotely. But I have it working now so that''s a relief. Seems this a problem that effects ALL the HP printers capable of ePrinting and is not specifically a problem with this printer.)

This is one of the most exciting products I have seen. It is a printer that can print and scan from a computer, as does any multifunction printer. It has a removable tablet computer called the Zeen which is the control panel. Using the Zeen, you can copy, scan to SD memory card or fax via eFax (if you can get it to work). The Zeen can have a home page which can display WIDGETS you install on it which can have such things as the time, date, temperature, etc. There are many to choose from. You can have up to 8 home pages. The home page also has room for 6 "APPS" at the bottom in the APP TRAY. There is a tab with an arrow that can be clicked above the apps to give you access to the available apps, which contains up to 100 (I think) apps. These apps are mostly used to print content and which come directly from the WEB. Additional apps can be installed from HP''s app library. Android apps cannot be easily installed. The printer (and Zeen) are web connected through WiFi. The printer gets its own email address assigned and it is possible to send attachments such as .DOC, .DOCX, .PDF, .JPG files, etc. It then prints the document/image as if you printed it off your computer application. My daughter, who is attending college, says this would have saved her a lot of hassle last semester had I had the printer then. Using the Zeen, you can read books (from Barnes & Nobel or from your SD card (.PDF format)) and view image files from your SD card (I have had trouble viewing images using GALLERY. It may have been caused by the large, 6GB size of the folder). You can (if it works) send or receive up to 20 faxes each from a phone number which is assigned to your computer (Zeen).

It uses HP 564/564XL ink cartridges. It comes with "setup" cartridges, which don''t seem to have much ink. I have had another printer which uses these same regular cartridges (not setup) and can testify that they don''t last long and are very expensive to provide. Don''t even bother with the 564 cartridges, they don''t last very long at all. Buy the larger capacity 564XL versions. It uses 5 different cartridges: Black, Yellow, Cyan, Magenta and Photo Black. Don''t confuse the Photo Black with Black as they are two different things. On my other printer, which uses these same cartridges, I have found that they tend to run out of ink at the same time. They are very expensive to replace and they don''t last long.

I have had my C510a eStation printer for 48 hours and had the following experiences:

I have been unable to register with eFax. When I attempt to register, I get a "cannot get a fax number" message. After two days, I have been told that the server is down and they don''t know when it will be working. They said it could be several days. The engineer said to keep trying to register.

Except for eFax, everything was working until late last night when the "PRINT APPS" stopped printing. Everything would seem normal until the paper exited the printer. All it printed was a thin line at the top of the page. It should have printed something like a coloring page, according to which app I was printing from.

After calling HP support several times, I was finally contacted by an engineer who had me do a hard reset on the Zeen by powering up while holding both volume buttons. This caused me to lose everything I had spent hours setting up. It also caused all home pages to disappear, leaving just one blank home page with only one app showing (Yahoo! mail). I will now have to create new home pages and reload the apps to the home page. I assume I will have to set up various apps again which is a pain to do using the virtual keyboard. I think touch screens are overrated. After resetting the Zeen, the Print Apps now print properly.

I have read a review on the WEB for this printer who said it wouldn''t read from his SD card. I had the same problem, but found it was my fault. You simply have to press the card in all the way until it "snaps". When I did that, it worked fine.

One thing I don''t like is that the Zeen cannot be turned off when it is docked on the printer. If you take the Zeen off the printer and turn it off, after you put in in the dock it turns back on. Even after it dims, light still comes from it. Our printer is in our bedroom and my wife is very light sensitive. I have been taking the Zeen off the dock, turning it off and leaving it on my desk at night. The printer LEDs (3 of them) can be turned off. I am strongly considering purchasing a holster from HP to protect the Zeen ($24.95)and a power supply ($19.95) to allow longer operation when not docked. They also have a neoprene sleeve for $19.95 which seems less bulky than the holster. HP has an anti-glare screen protector for $19.95.

The engineer told me that the eStation C510a is a very new product which is still in the testing phase. I would have thought the product would have been tested before being released to the public. She told me to report any other problems so that they could improve the product. She also said that a newer version of the Android operating system would be available soon which would make it faster (it can be very slow).

I love the product. I just wish it would work properly. If you buy it, be prepared to spend a lot of time on the phone with support. This is especially important if you have a cell phone without unlimited minutes.

Update 01/15/2011

I had expected HP to update the Zeen tablet to correct some problems that I had been having. They were supposed to upgrade the Android operating system from ver 2.1 to 2.2. I had been told that by HP Support.

Today, I was told that the group at HP that had been supporting the eStation C510a/Zeen were no longer supporting it and that they would not support the applications I had been having trouble with (Internet, eReader, Home). (The Zeen will lock up and I will get a message such as: "Activity Internet (in application Internet) is not responding". I get the option to Force Close or Wait. This happens often. I believe this is an Android operating system problem.

The HP Support person told me that I would need to call Google Android support and try to get them to solve the problem. He said I should download the new version of Android myself, which I am not qualified to do.

HP has lowered the price of the printer substantially and are offering a free gift card with purchase. I think they are closing the product out and it appears that support will be limited.

I had really liked the eStation and Zeen and was sold on its promise. I now can no longer recommend this printer and wish I had not bought it.

UPDATE 01/16/2011

I received an email from HP Support today telling me to do a FACTORY RESET on the Zeen which would cause me to lose all data and work I have put into it to resolve the Not Responding problem. I have done the reset 3 times with no real effect and have no intention to do it again.

I replied asking about forthcoming updates to the Android operating system and received the following reply: *****, I would like to inform you that as of now there are no updates for zeen. However, as you are not happy with the product, you can return the printer to the store you have purchased or you can contact the phone support department, they will remotely access your system and troubleshoot the issue.

It appears that the eStation C510a/Zeen is now an orphan product for which no updates will be provided in the future. That is sad, as this product had great promise.

UPDATE 01/22/2011

The applications on the Zeen continue to stop responding (Internet, Home & eReader). HP has essentially told me that they will not issue an update to fix the problems. (I think HP buying Palm with their WebOS operating system is why they have no interest in fixing their product using the Android operating system.) While I really love the product, it is simply too frustrating to continue using. If HP is going to sell a product, they really should support it. I am going to return this product to where I purchased it. I consider the product to be defective.

UPDATE 02/26/2011

I have decided to keep the printer and have solved the problem with applications stopping responding. See details in the comments below.

UPDATE 03/31/2011

I have heard from a reader that he hasn''t had any problems and that HP still continues to support this printer.

I am glad that he hasn''t had problems and am sure a number of people haven''t. HP hasn''t discontinued answering the phone and trying to support the printer. However, when I first started calling, I was told that a special group did all support for this product. The last time I called, I was told that the group was no longer supporting the printer. In the past, I have found that the regular support people know very little about this model printer. Early on, an engineer from the group told me that a newer version of Android would be available to update the printer/Zeen. That has not happened and the last time I called the person said no updates were available. Maybe they will continue to update this printer. I hope so, since I have decided to keep it.

I wouldn''t want to misinform the public. It is currently working very well.

UPDATE 06/08/2011

I am currently using this printer just as an all-in-one printer and am having no problems with it other than high ink costs. I find that the Zeen tablet isn''t really worth using, other than to control the printer.

UPDATE 06/11/2011

My Zeen tablet reset itself for some unknown reason resulting in me losing all customization I have made.

I happened to check for Product Updates afterwards and found that one was available. I went ahead and installed it. It took a while. Now the firmware version is showing (2.2). I wonder if it upgraded from Android 2.1 to 2.2? Maybe it will become more stable now.

UPDATE 06/28/2011

I just noticed an option on the Zeen I hadn''t noticed before:

Take SETTINGS -> TOOLS -> ADVANCED -> APPLICATIONS -> UNKNOWN SOURCES (Allow install of non-HP applications.)

This will give you a warning that HP isn''t responsible for loss of data, etc. if non-HP applications are installed.

For what it is worth.

Don''t believe the low reviews on this printer. I bought this printer first and then read the reviews. The low reviews scared me, but now that I''ve used the printer, I know that the low reviews are because the users didn''t know how to set up the computer. Listen, it''s an easy set up process. It takes about 20 minutes, but it''s easy. Just follow the tablet instructions & videos. Another complaint from some was there was not a manual. Well, you can download it on the HP site. It explains everything! I think it rather funny that the people who complained about no manual didn''t even think to read all the literature you can download from the HP web site. Nothing electronic anymore comes with a priinted manual. Manuals are all on pdf files now a days. I think the manual is also available on the CD. If you''re having trouble, at least go to the HP web site. There are steps there to walk you through set up and everything, if you you really want print.

When you register at HP there is all kinds of support. There is a FAQ list. A "How To" list. And even, a very short list of problems and how to fix those. HP has listened to their customers and have addressed them. And, no I don''t work for HP. Like I said, i was ready to send this back until I did the research, so I want to dispel the myths from the low reviewers.

This is a great home station! I have printed an email from work with Adobe & Word attachments with no problem. The attachements came out perfectly formatted.

I have sent pictures through eprint from my cell phone email. The photo quality is AWESOME! Brilliant & vibrant colors.

The tablet (Zeen) is basically a Nook with loads of extras. The touch is sensitive, but it''s a learning curve. It''s an android tablet, so you can download some other apps, I''m told. And you can take it with you to a wireless cafe & browse your email, the internet, facebook, read an ebook, whatever, and then email what you like to your printer at home. It''s not an IPAD or a Zoom, so don''t think of it like that. If you think of it as a super cool Nook reader with extras, you''ll love it. Hey, you''re getting a cool basic tablet pc and a wireless printer for a great price. I don''t think you can print wirelessly from those pricey tablets.

This printer is for home use so a dedicated fax line isn''t necessary unless you fax tons. I occassionally fax, so the EFAX 20 free faxes per month is great for me.

It takes time to learn all that the printer and Zeen can do. Just be patient and you''ll love this. Oh, and if the tablet is not attached to the printer, you still have print, copy, and scan functions available to you.

The SD card slot on the tablet can be used to read all your SD cards and send stuff to the printer or just listen to music, watch videos, and view photos directly from the card. Awesome!!"

Want HP Photosmart eStation All-in-One (CQ140AB1H) Discount?

I''ve recently been a user of mostly Epson all-in-one printers, but ours is a very high-tech household and we found Epson''s design to be a bit long in the tooth. We have several computers, iPhones, an iPad 2 that we wanted to be able to print from, we dropped our (expensive, seldom used) landline long ago in favor of cellular-only phones and we struggled to find a printer that fits our lifestyle.

Most of them don''t have DIRECT support of iOS devices (some have apps that work so-so), they all seem based around the idea that you have a landline if you want to fax anything, and the user interface for setting things up and accessing print functions is often hard to use. Sometimes you''re even lucky if your printer installs on the latest hardware and operating systems! Luckily, the eStation blows the competition out of the water in all those areas.

First, as always, is installation, which is BY FAR the easiest of any printer I''ve setup. The tablet makes for beautiful, easy data entry and instruction. Picking timezones, choosing networks and entering in network passwords is all as easy as possible thanks to the tablet''s gesture support and virtual keyboard. Competing printers like my released-this-year Epson touch-screen printer didn''t even have a virtual keyboard! Setting up the web-services (e.g. getting an email address for the printer) was simple, too. I didn''t even have to read a manual, I just ran through intuitive setup screens and, because you have a tablet, there''s even instructional videos to walk you through the processes if you get stuck.

Installing drivers on my computers was equally painless. When installing my other Epson printer, I was nagged by 20 security dialogs on Windows 7 64-bit and had to make a tech support call to even setup scanning from my Mac! By contrast the eStation setup was a dream. The Mac interface is smooth and clean with no errors or hiccups while the Windows setup screens were not quite as refined as on Mac but without the security prompt dialogs found in the Epson setup.

What about my iPhones and iPad 2, you ask? No setup required! They were able to locate the printer via AirPrint instantly and print emails, documents and web pages without issue, even given the option to use double-sided printing if desired! You simply have to push the same button you''d use to email the content and there''s a "Print" option at the bottom that finds the eStation as long as it''s connected to the same network.

You also have the ability to have the printer receive an email from a (long, convoluted) email address assigned to it by HP''s ePrint services. It works perfectly and can even be done remotely, say if I had to print out a form for my wife to fill out while I was at work! The eStation simply prints the email you send and/or prints the attachments you send with the email. It''s brilliant!

The eFax feature is one of my favorites, too! Like I said, we''re among the 20% and growing that have only cellular service with no landline. Thus, the ability to fax directly over the internet is very welcome, indeed, espcially when you get 20 faxes for free each month! Before I owned the eStation, we''d use our old printer to scan documents to the computer, then use a service we paid $80/year for to fax them. The eStation will completely eliminate that expense and eliminate a step in the process by faxing directly from the printer (instead of scanning to computer, then faxing).

Unfortunately, faxing (and scanning) isn''t perfect since it appears like you have to scan one sheet at a time as there is no document feeder. That came as a surprise to me, however, given the fact we almost always send 1-page faxes, I''m okay with the limitation. I can see where the 1-page at a time limitation will become an infrequent annoyance with scanning, but it''s forgiveale given the printers other strengths.

Lastly, it''s worth mentioning the included Android tablet. As I mentioned previously, I have an iPad 2, and the answer to the question of if the eStation "Zeen" tablet stacks up to standalone tablets, the answer is a resounding "No". The tablet is slow, heavy, and not great as tablets go. It''s of absolutely no suprise however, and shouldn''t be counted against this amazing printer/tablet combo. Look at it this way: as of the time of this writing, the cheapest iPad 2 is $499, the somewhat similarly capable HP Envy 100 printer sells for $250 on Amazon, while the eStation sells for $300. Certainly a printer/tablet combo won''t stack up against a more expensive standalone tablet and if the question is whether or not it''s worth the extra $50 over another printer for eFax services and a 7-inch wireless Android tablet the answer is abso-freakin-lutely.

The tablet makes for a great control panel, with video and easy-to-enter text, it provides an easy touch-interface for faxing, scanning, copying, etc., it displays weather widgets and other items if you choose, it browses the web and prints web pages directly and it can even play Angry Birds and other games you can download from Amazon''s Android Appstore! My kids even use the included apps to look up and print coloring sheets of Disney characters! Not a bad value if you ask me.

In short, HP hit it out of the park with this printer, which stands as a perfect example of innovation within the market segment. AirPrint for iOS, ePrint, eFax are all huge selling points, usability is better than any printer I''ve used and the 7" table is icing on the cake! It even comes with an enclosed paper tray to keep my kids out of printer paper! The main drawback is the lack of document feeder, which may make heavy faxers and scanners frustrated. Despite that limitation, however, the eStation is easily the best printer on the market, in my mind.

Oh, and one last thing worth a mention: the whole printer comes wrapped in a pretty nice, large reusable HP-branded grocery bag. Sweet!

Arrival:

When the printer arrived along with two others, I have to admit that I was worried. The shipping box was pretty well battered. Thankfully, after a full inspection, I found nothing had gotten to the HP box inside, only the Amazon box has been damaged.

Inside the box along with the printer was a full compliment of printer ink cartridges, a zip up bag with cables, and even a carry all bag for the printer itself. The bad seems to be the thing for the new HP printers. I''m not sure how many folks would carry around a printer this size, but, it''s a decent enough bag.

Setup:

Setup took about 30min, most of which was spent unboxing, taking off the protective tape, and waiting on Vista to load up the drivers and software. Pretty much, just plug it in and follow the onscreen instructions. That was all there was to it, which is a plus for the non-tech types. It found our home network quickly, and the onscreen instructions and demo movies for setup were spot on, and repeatable across Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Usage:

For this review, I''ll be comparing against HP''s similar models, the C410a and CN216A#B1H. I feel this is a fair assessment of HP''s current top to bottom all-in-one wireless printer lineup. As of the time of the CN216A#B1H runs $90, the C410A $160, and the CQ140A#B1H $345.

Each of these units has the ePrint function, which lets you print from pretty much anywhere. You can use HP''s phone app or email the printer directly and it will do the rest. The printer figures out which paper should be used based on what you sent it and spits out the print. It worked pretty well, lag between sending and printing was minimal, maybe 1-2 min max. Being a free service, I can''t complain about it a whole lot.

Given the included 7" tablet, the CQ140A blows both the other models away as far as easy menu navigation goes. The tablet doesn''t even need to be connected to the printer, and of course you can print directly from it while you lounge in another room. Like the C410A, it support double-sided printing but lacks an auto document feeding, dedicated fax support, and built-in wired networking. READ: If you don''t have a wireless network, this printer may not work for you! Minus the tablet and duplex printing, the CA140A has pretty much the same specs as the much less expensive CN216A. The C410A outclasses them both, besting their 1200dpi scan resolution with 4800dpi. Pages per minute printing in both black-and-white and color varies by 2 or less across all three models. They all use the same ink cartridges, though the CQ140A and C410A utilize a special photo black cartridge while the CN216 doesn''t. This should result in replacing the black cartridge less often if you typically print a mix of text and photos. Finally, while there is no dedicated fax support like with the C410A. The CQ140A has an eFax service instead. You get 20 pages a month free, and pay per page after.

The tablet:

Of course, the "big deal" about this printer is the 7" Android based tablet. This is the feature that is supposed to set it apart from the rest. Called the HP Zeen, it was a bit flaky when it first arrived and I was really disappointed. Being the geek that I am, I checked for updates and sure enough there were some. Afterward, the flakiness disappeared. My observations are from this point, as ragging about problems that have already been fixed is silly.

The tablet is supposed to replace the built in LCD on the other models, and then add some. That, it does very well. All the same apps are included, and for anyone used to an Android based system, it''s very easy to use. There is an included video to walk you through usage, in case you''re new to Android. While the Zeen has a bunch of pre-loaded apps, that''s all your get. There is no access to Google''s Marketplace or even an HP equivalent. At least they included Facebook, eh? If you''re a Yahoo user, you''ll be happy to hear that Messanger, Mail, and Daily Digest apps. Barnes & Nobel also make an appearance, so you can get your ebook reading on. The Zeen can play back music and some video files as well, and you can set the Zeen to act as a digital picture frame. All your media needs to be manually loaded to an SD card, and the Zeen will take care of the rest.

As far as performance goes, the Zeen is very lacking in my opinion. I did some time trials with it, along with a Nook Color and Samsung Epic phone, (all three are Android based devices with the same base version). Both the Nook and Epic outpaced the Zeen loading web pages, refreshing Facebook newsfeed, and general device navigation. Though Zeen and Nook have the same speed processor, the Zeen is very sluggish and I found myself tapping the screen a few times to get it to respond to my input. Often I thought it had hung up, only to have it respond 5-10 seconds later. Even some of the included live wallpapers refused to run. In short, don''t expect this to be overly speedy.

Ok, so, I''m a geek and decided to see what else I could get out of this tablet. What I found was that though HP chose not to include an app store of any kind, they left the door wide open to sideload apps. I was able to get AndAppStore up and running, and tried various apps. Some would install, some wouldn''t. Of those that did install, it was still hit and miss for getting them to run. (The apps were after all designed to run on a smaller screen.) Widgets and live wallpaper suffered the same fate. I''m happy to say that I had Angry Birds playing just fine though, (damn addicting game).

Bottom Line:

As a printer, the CQ140A is pretty much the same the much lower end CN216. About all you get for the $250 price difference is the Zeen tablet and duplex printing. Is that worth it? In my opinion, no. The Zeen is slow performing, app limited, heavy, and for $350, I''d want real fax support and hardwired networking. Myself, I''d prefer to get a Nook Color and the CN216 if I needed/wanted a tablet or similar. If you''re not interested in the tablet thing, I''d suggest going with the C410A, which offers much better performance at less than half the price of the CQ140A. Dropping the price, improving the hardware, and/or make the Zeen a full Android tablet with decent speed would change things up.s

We needed a simple fax with few controls and one that was easy to use. This fit the bill. I had to give no training to people using it. Toner is simple to replace. The only thing it is missing is a visible paper indicator to tell me its low on paper. Not a big deal but would have been nice.

  • FastFront System makes changing ink and paper easy and convenient right from the front of the printer
  • Collect, combine and edit multiple web pages to print your own layout using Easy-WebPrint EX

I previously had a Canon printer (MP600) for 6 years. It wasn''t always without frustration but it was good enough that when it finally died I thought I''d go with another Canon.

Rather than go with a high photo quality printer, I bought one with the auto document feeder because I scan more documents than I print pictures (I print almost no pictures at all). I figured this would be on par with my old printer, but it isn''t.

This printer, despite being completely unsuited for use anywhere other than the home, has annoying office-like behaviour that is, it is designed to be turned on all of the time. It occasionally takes more than 10 minutes to start up and print a document, but usually takes at least 4 to 5 minutes to go from turned off to document printed.

Next, the actual print speed was disappointing for being a non-photo centric printer. It took 7 seconds to print a 1 page black and white word document, which to me is quite slow and considerably slower than my old Canon printer. So much for newer models, I guess. The printer is also about least twice as loud as my old printer when it starts up and goes through its motions. It also has a loud beep when turning on and off which I haven''t figured out how to turn off in the settings (I don''t think you can).

All in all, this printer is OK and prints the documents that I need it to. However, it seems to have a misguided personality. It is not fit for office use (way too small), but has many features that would only really be acceptable in an office environment (always on, the beeping, loud, slow, poor photo quality). I don''t think I will be keeping this printer for 6 years. Once the ink runs out, I''ll probably sell it.

I bought one of these in the summer of 2012. It lasted about 2 months before the paper feed stopped working. I sent it back and they sent me another one. It worked for 3 months and the head alignment broke. I put this one in the trash because I did not want them to send me another one. It was also complicated to set up and the print quality was extremely poor. Don''t buy this printer!!!

I really like this paper. High quality and comparable to other papers that are more expensive. A great economical alternative to the more expensive Epson (and other brands) of paper.

This paper is "okay," but it''s not up to snuff when compared to Epson Ultra Premium Luster. The Inkpress is a little duller. You don''t even have to compare side-by-side really to tell the difference. When I''m printing on the Inkpress, my heart always sinks a little as the image starts appearing out of my printer (Epson 3880). It''s not worth the small savings over the Epson paper. I won''t be buying it again.

Buy Brother MFC-845cw Color Photo Inkjet Flatbed All-in-One with 5.8GHz Cordless Handset Now

I bought this product primarily because I wanted a FAX/TAD that had a cordless phone. I needed to replace my Panasonic and the store that I went to did not have a Panasonic in stock. The only fax that also had a cordless phone feature was the Brother All-in-One so I decided to give it a try. It was the worst purchase I have made in a very long time. Having an extra printer/copier around was just a bonus to me and in fact it is the only part of the machine that is not a disappointment.

The restrictions on how the TAD can be used make it complicated and ineffective. Callers who leave a message have limited time to do so and that cannot be adjusted. I have had numerous clients have their messages cut off and I think that they find it insulting. When monitoring calls I have to listen to the outgoing message each time. Also during monitoring: if the caller hangs up we have to listen to a dial tone blaring in the room for several minutes. It''s very distracting. If you are in the middle of a project and do not to stop to pick up the phone you will wish you had when you hear this racket. As an added annoyance: If the caller hangs up right away you have to hear the outgoing message on top of the dial tone (both at the same time). It''s hard to imagine why Brother thought that was a good feature.

The outgoing message is limited to 20 seconds for the message center to work properly. I have confirmed with customer service that there also must be a delay of 5 seconds before our outgoing message starts. I have had clients who when confronted the with the five seconds of silence when they first called have assumed that they misdialed and hung up before the message came on. It even happened to me the first time I called my number after installing the Brother MFC-845CW...

Picking up calls from a remote phone is cumbersome enough that we just do not do it. If you are used to calling your phone and typing in your three or four digit code you will not be pleased with this system.

I finally gave up and spent a $114 on another answering machine thinking I could just use the Brother for faxing and copying. I was then told that I cannot bypass the TAD on the Brother but still receive faxes without a number of new restrictions: My new TAD needs to be set to pick up on two rings if the Brother is to work as a fax machine. I am not interested in trying to run to pick up each call within two rings in order to avoid having the answering machine pick up. There is one possible way to get around this: having distinctive ring for faxes. Unfortunately that is not available though my local phone company (I am located in the Virgin Islands).

I am not alone in hating this device. The two other people working in our small office also find it intolerable. Having purchased the Brother All-in-One, and an auxiliary answering device I am still without what I needed in the first place: a TAD/ FAX with a cordless fax.

As for the the great customer service: we did not find them exemplary. The three people we spoke to did speak English (not as a first language but well enough that we were not frustrated) but we did get conflicting information. I guess it is hard to be a great customer service representative for a really bad product.

After a month of frustration I am going to discard it unless I can find someone to give it to that just wants a copier. I''ll get the Panasonic that I originally wanted. I hope I can save someone else from this product.

This is an excellent mfc, I am extremely satisfied with its print, scan, fax, and copy functions as well as the wireless networking. I''m also very happy with the display, which is large and color and very usable. Overall, this MFC works flawlessly! Kudo''s to Brother for this.

Now for the negative info. I was so hoping when I bought this that I could replace my Panasonic KX-TG5110 phone system with this MFC so I could consolidate all my "stuff". Sadly, the phone sound quality is so-so and it has an annoying high frequency hiss in the background of a phone call. Mind you, this is after I adjusted the echo cancellation and played with the various settings. The phone sound quality out of the box was hideous with huge echo''s, the Brother default settings are ridiculous.

After all tuning and adjustment, switching between my Panasonic and the Brother phones during a phone call was night and day. Panasonic wins hands down.

Needless to say, I''m keeping my Panasonic and junking the Brother phone. However, at the price, I still think the Brother MFC is a high value and high quality product.

I''m with all who praise the functions of MFC-845CW. I bought mine in November 2006.

The only thing that bothers me is that my color printer cartridges became empty sooner than I expected. I rarely used them, at least I thought so. I was presented with slide instructions on the display about how to replace the cartridge and basically forced to do it. Any attempts to print another single page in black ink were prevented. That''s very limiting in my opinion. My black cartridge was still available but that didn''t matter. The reason I mention this is that I didn''t have that type of obstacles with my HP printer. I was allowed to print just in black.

The Brother''s manual states that the cartridges lasts Black ~500 pages and Color ~400 pages. Well, I haven''t printed as many pages; 100 the most. After about 6 months I started noticing decreased level of the color ink cartridges on the display. I was surprised because what I printed was mostly a black text. Earlier I also made appropriate adjustment in printer settings just for that purpose (Grayscale). Yet, I assume those cartridges were used for my prints instead of the black one because the latter was used very little. And there is no setting available to choose just the black ink cartridge for printing.

The manual also says that every time you turn the device ON, the cartridges perform self cleaning. If you leave it ON all the time, they will periodically clean themselves using "very little ink". I''ve heard that whining sound on many occasions.

Anyway, my impression is that maybe the routine of self cleaning cartridges used more ink than my printing. That''s why I run out of it after six months and what worse was prevented from using the printer all together. I hope it helps.

i just bought this mfc 2 days ago i love it ,it has everything you need works perfectly faxing copying priting pics is awsome love the network capablity and not to mention the wireless phone set w/answer machine.

i bought this to replace an old hp printer and a dust collecting canon scanner i looked @ hp product but i couldn''t find any thing w/the same functions at least not for about the same price the closest thing from hp was about $150 more i bought mine @ office depot about the same price @amazon but office depot offer a mail in rebate (hopefully i''ll get it)

the only part about this that kindda bugged me was set up w/wireless network & 3 pc''sit just took a while really the main issue was my router not the mfc.

if you are looking for a all in one printer you can not go wrong with this one not to mention ink is cheaper than hp''s.i give brother 5 shiny stars.

was interested in 7675 model that has 4 star rating over several reviews. Its scanner is 600x1200 dpi so I decided to review the 9575 with better scan capabilities and looks much more elegant that 7675. I read the two reviews on Amazon, both had 2 star ratings. Both are very well written, to the point, so I was afraid to pick this model up. However, I decided to give it a try anyway.

I have tried to address some of the points raised in the other two 2 Star reviews, hope it will help them also, or, they may be correct in their individual circumstances.

The setup was a breeze the CD accompanying the printer asks for 30 minutes set up time, I got done somewhat short of 30 mins, most of the time going into doing external stuff ("now get paper, load it in tray" etc). Once the setup was complete, all its features worked just fine. No customer support, no rollback of software of conflicts of any kind.

Here are some notes that may help the buyers or those considering to buy-

* On opening the box, in big letters, there is a sign insert CD before you connect the printer. Follow the simple instructions by the book. You may find the setup as easy as I did.

* I connected the machine wireless hooking up my 2 desktops and 1 laptop. All work fine.

* The earlier 2 star reviews found the printer flimsy. I found it as well constructed as any other printer give or take a shade here and there. The perception of "Flimsy" could arise from the scanner cover, once lifted, well, it appears "Flimsy" as the hinges swivel and appear loose.

In checking with one of the brick and mortar stores, their response was that it is designed that way so that a BOOK can be photocopied. Rigid hinges make it difficult to position a book.

* Print quality is good, ink capacity is same as 7675 model (approx 500 pages), I am ok with all this. PCMag has some reviews on both and I agree with their assessment -both have similar 3star or 4star rating.

* As far as software conflicts reported earlier go, my machines are loadedfrom productivity suites to graphics to even games. No software issues arose. This is my experience, and is not meant to refute what the other two reported.

Overall, a very satisfying machine for such a low price. I am happy with it.

The overall construction and setup are good including the wireless. The system is a bit louder than my HP K60 that this was suppose to replace. The photo quality is good but less than the quality of the canon PIXMA series. However, I didn''t attempt to fine-tune the photo optons. The biggest problem is the software will not allow you to share or use peer-to-peer networking for this system. (confirmed by tech. support) Once I connected the other two computers on my network all the advanced options were grayed-out. ie auto-duplexing and all the photo options. Therefore I sent it back.

I bought the Lexmark x9575 after returning the Epson Workforce 600. I loved the Epson but their idea of 2-sided printing is flipping the paper and putting it back in paper tray. I own my own business and need the speed and conveneince of automatic duplex printing.

The Lexmark is difficult to set up. I''m an IT guy and configured my own network, even then I had to call and spend 30 minutes with an out-sourced support department. They couldn''t figure it out. I finally realized that the WiFi on the printer will only work with WEP Key 1. My network was set to use Key 3. After making the changes on my firewall/access point it connected and began working.

If you don''t use the software to set up the printer on your PC most of the advanced options (like Print Duplex) will be greyed out. Knowing what I know, and working with PCs and Printers for a living, I configured it myself and was frustrated to see the Duplex option was greyed out. Another call to tech support. He changed my TCP/IP port to a Lexmark 9500 Series por and it all started working.

The only on-going issue is that the color is a bit skewed on the first page of the first pring job of the day. I don''t know if it''s because I''m in Alaska and the air is super dry, or if the temp. in the office is too cold, or if the free ink cartridges that shipped with the printer are junk. Anyway, the first color page of the day is always funky. If I print a "dummy page" in full color before an important document it will usually do ok. It is a waste of ink and paper, but at least I get decent looking images after that. Will see if a new color cartridge will correct the issue and update later.

It is printing, it prints in duplex, it''s connected wirelessly, it scans and copies and faxes. It''s not the best but it''s working, so I''ll keep it. But I don''t have to be happy about it. Give it a couple of years and I''ll buy a different brand.

This printer as with most of the new Lexmark printers have chipped ink cartridge so you can not use refill kits. This reason and this reason only is why this printer never got a 5 star rating. But i can say if you are computer knowledge you can find a way around the ink cartridge problem and reset it. People these days do not have the money to shell out for the way over priced of ink cartridge from the manufacture so they use refill kits to cut the price by almost 3/4.
