Okidata C5200N LED Color Printer

Okidata C5200N LED Color PrinterOne motivation for writing this review is some important misinformation in a previous review. At any rate, I could not decide between the OKI 5200 and the HP 2600. At my local office supply store, they sat side-by-side, and thanks to two different $100 rebate offers (one instant, one mail-in) for the OKI, they were the exact same price. My decades-long favorable experiences with everything HP I had purchased (including a mono laser printer) had me strongly leaning toward the HP. The sample test prints made by each showed them very close in quality, with the HP doing a slightly better job at printing graphics. A big difference is that the OKI''s prints are high gloss. Even the lettering is gloss, when printing no graphics, on plain white paper. So imagine every letter you print with the OKI having glossy black type regardless of what paper you use. If that''s something you like, the OKI will not disappoint. For normal use, I personally find it a bit strange. It so happens that I was buying the OKI primarily for the printing of color brochures, and the glossy output was perfect for that. So I went with the OKI against my better judgement, but in love with the glossy prints.

I really don''t know whether I made the right decision, all things considered, because I don''t have the HP 2600 to compare against. The OKI has an enormous footprint making it difficult to find a place to park it. It also weighs 50+ pounds. The HP has a great and stylistic design that allows a MUCH smaller footprint. Something to keep in mind before you purchase, as it''s a problem for me now. I am going to obtain a separate low cart and place the OKI on that.

The various toner cartidges inside the OKI are horizontally arranged. Lifting the long cover to its full height (requiring a lot of free space to do so), one then reaches over the long bank of toner cartridges to access the rearmost colors. The HP 2600, on the other hand, has an extremely easy access design, with all the cartridges available at the FRONT of the printer, in vertical array.

The OKI does produce oustanding text (with the warning that it is high gloss and there''s nothing you can do about it) that is crisp and clean down to small font sizes. Printing photos is another story. Relative to other color laser printers in this price range, small photos (which I use a lot of for brochure printing) print about average. However, the OKI photo printing would not even match a cheap inkjet printer from five years ago. There are several color printing tweaks available, and I found that using the OKI''s sRGB color space worked a bit better than the other settings. Color lasers have a long way to go when it comes to quality photo printing. They key is to keep the photos small, somewhere under 3" x 3" .

The OKI build construction is good. Preparing for first-time use requires about 25 minutes of removing tapes, straps, and shipping blocks located all over, under and inside the unit. Be certain to keep the cartridges level in your hands whilst you''re removing all the protective tapes from it. I managed to spill some cyan toner on my pants. Driver installation went perfectly, in contrast to some aggravating hacking I''ve had to do when installing HP laser printer drivers.

The OKI fired up properly (if noisily) the very first time, and the intitial test page was perfect. While the print speed is quite good, the warmup time is not. The HP will get you prints from a cold start much quicker -but the printing speed is slow.

Documentation includes a handy and useful booklet that attaches to the side of the printer. The manual itself is lacking in detail. The setup guide was ambiguous and not very helpful.

The built-in Ethernet card is a nice addition, but also found on other color lasers in this price range. Setup for this part is intimidating and not for the faint of heart.

I use 65 pound stock for the brochures I print, which means I have to use the Multi Purpose Tray to load the sheets, and flip open a rear paper stacker so that the stock shoots straight through the printer and out the back. Recall that the printer footprint is already deep, and now I have to allow another foot of room for the sheets to feed out the back. Further, the Multi Purpose Tray is very kludgy to use.

Now for the sobering aspect of OKI ownership (and other color lasers as well). There is bad news, and worse news. Bad -it costs more to purchase a new set of toner cartridges than it cost to purchase a new OKI. The high capacity (5k pages, NOT 50k as mentioned in a previous review) toner cartridges for this printer are $62 for black and $142.50 for the other colors. If you purchase the rainbow pack (all colors at once) you save 10% and pay a mere $440.15. Folks, I paid $400 for this printer brand new after mail-in rebate. Things get worse, as the OKI uses separate drums, one for each color also, and they cost $100 each as well. When you change a drum, OKI recommends you change the cartridge. OKI claims the drums are good for 50k pages. When you thought things couldn''t get worse -well, they do. OKI, unlike HP, is one of those companies that provides only a starter set of toner cartridges (rated at 3k pages). The ugly fact is that once you fork out the dollars for OKI 2600, in only 3k pages you''ll be facing the peculiar decision of forking out $440.15 for new cartridges, or buying a new color laser for LESS. By 50k pages, you''ll be needing some $845 to buy new drums and cartridges. Better start scouting out a convenient dumpster in which to unload your 50-pound hunk of plastic.

The bottom line for me is that the OKI produces some great glossy brochures that just pop with crisp color. Unfortunately, it is not easy to print these brochures due to the kludgy Multi Purpose Tray. For other uses, especially if you''re not seeking the glossy look for everything you print, you may want to check out the competition. I''m personally not looking forward to another major financial outlay at 3k pages, as detailed above.

I purchased this printer after reading a lot of reviews of other printers and this model''s predecesor, the C5150. After rebate, I purchased it from Staples for $400...and they delivered it for free.

I previously owned a Konica-Minolta Magicolor 2400 W Color Laser that I returned. A lesson I learned from that printer is that some color lasers are power hogs. My home office is in an older house (120+ yrs old) with typical home-sized circuitry. The K-M caused the lights to flicker when on. The power consumption on this one is very reasonable.

As previously noted, this printer is big. It is 2 ft deep without the straight path outlet tray open. The top opens like a car hood to access the consumables. While this makes it easy to get to them, you can''t put this printer anywhere you don''t have clearance over it. Measure carefully before you buy. It is also heavy...almost 60 lbs.

Set up was a snap and the instructions were good. Once in place, hookup and installation was easy, as this is not on a network. Just plug in two cords and run the installation software.

The first sample turned out to be defective after about a month. (That can happen to anything.) Oki Customer Support shipped me a refurbished unit overnight and mailed me a lable to ship the defective unit back. Fedex would even come and pick it up.

While getting a refurbished unit was expected, it came with no consumables...toner, drums, fuser and belt. No problem with this printer, tho, because the top opens and everything comes out and back in easily. So swapping everything from one to the other was easy and I was back up and running in no time.

This is where I had a minor problem. The defective printer had less than 300 pages on it. The replacement had a page count of more than 3000. The printer (as most do) judges the life of all consumables based on the page count, so my 99% full toner cartridges were now detected to be only 67% full with a corrosponding decrease in the remaining life of the belt, fuser, and drums. Since this printer will stop working when it thinks it is out of toner, I would have to replace all toners when they still have 1/3 of their life left in them! (The older firmware version of the replacement printer was a minor issue.)

I called Customer Service back with the above concerns. They said there was no way to reset the page count on the printer after servicing, but they agreed to my concerns. They sent me a brand new printer (also overnight) with all new consumables. Fedex came and took the old one away a couple of days later.

The new printer has been running satisfactorily for about 4 months now with no problem. I print mostly on regular 20 lb paper but have done business card stock, Avery lables, check stock, envelopes, and card stock. I have even used lables and envelopes that said "inkjet only not for laser printers" with no problems using both the standard tray and the multipurpose tray. The instructions suggest using the straight thru method for envelopes, card stock, and lables, but all come out fine making the turn thru the normal path.

Contrary to the whining in the previoius post about all the toners running out at once...that is not likely. Depending on your usage, the black will be out first. The others will likely last a lot longer. As far as price, the cost of one black cartridge is far less than the 7 inkjet cartridges (At $30 ea.)I would need for the same 5000 pages on my HP 6540 inkjet.

As an aside, the price of consumables is comparable with other color lasers. If you use the cost of consumables as a basis, the 7 injet cartridges far exceeds the cost of that printer, too. (Not factoring in color ones.)

I do mostly black and white printing and have the defaults set to only use the black cartridge in draft mode. (Still good quality for most uses.) This extends the life of the color toners. The default settings are easy to set using the front panel controls.

The shiny printing takes some getting used to, but I can live with it.

The color pictures (graphics and photographs) I have done have looked good, tho not as good as a good inkjet, but from reading other reviews, neither does any laser.

The only cons are warmup times and noise. Compared to some other lasers I demo-ed in the store this one is a bit noisier especially when warming up, but still bearable. (But then I go back to the old dot matrix printer days, so I guess noise is relative.)

It also takes approx 1 min 55 sec for the first page to come out when the printer is in standby (power saving) mode. Successive print jobs take about 40 seconds for the first page. After that is is fast and quiet.

Overall I am happy with the printer, very satisfied with the customer support, and would recommend this printer. I would give it 4.5 stars if possible, and 5 if it were quieter.

As an IT Manager, I had heard good things about OKI color printers and purchased my first one almost two years ago -it now has almost 30,000 copies on it and (other than consumables) has required no service attention.

Pluses: Color and image quality ROCKS! Comes with network card already installed. Rarely jams, and easy to clear jams if the occur. Easily replacable and widely available toner and drums (and, if you check out a well-known online auction site, aftermarket drum reset kits are available which will save you about $300 when the printer hits 15,000 copies).

Only one negative: Network install/use can be a bit quirky (print jobs sometimes jam in printer que for no reason, but the network admin. can easily reset without rebooting).

Bottom line: I''m now using only OKI 5150/5200n''s (8 total) in our three store locations. For a mid-priced color laser, the 5200n deserves a serious look.

I''ve had the Oki C5200 for almost 5 years... it has been an excellent printer. I was lured into using a cheaper toner that claimed to be 100% compatible with the OEM product. WRONG. 6 months later and my wonderful laser printer is in need of over $800 worth of repair work. It has become very noisy, the black won''t print without smearing, all other colors are skewed, and there are blotches of cyan, magenta, and yellow all over the page!

Oki makes an excellent product... just make sure you use the OEM toner.

I just ordered an Oki MC360 MFP from Amazon today for a little over $300 to replace my failing C5200. :(

The printer has a lot of good features, and works well for about 6 months. Then users are faced with a dual nightmare. The high cost of toner and drums has already been mentioned above in several reviews. Complicate your life with the fact that maintenance problems start to accumulate and make the investment in toner and drum replacements more and more doubtful with every day of use. My printer has had 3 separate visits to the depot repair, and since the printer weighs in at over 50 lbs, that''s no easy task. It has also had at least 6 calls to Tech Support. Still the problem keeps coming back. Now I will buy a product with built in duplexing, and set the OKI in the rear, as a back up only.

HP LaserJet 4050 Printer

HP LaserJet 4050 Printer
  • 1,200-dpi resolution
  • NEC 4310 133-MHz RISC microprocessor
  • Prints 17 pages per minute
  • On-printer help system
  • 8 MB memory

I''ve had the opportunity to use this printer (home use) for the past 2 years (it was my roommate''s). The thing is so fantastic and dependable I forget it''s even there; I think that''s the true measure of an excellent product when using it becomes completely transparent. I''ve come to expect this top-notch quality and dependablility; I have no idea what I''m going to buy to try and replace it now that I''m moving out.

Changing the toner cartridge is a walk in the park. It takes longer to fill an ice cube tray. There are so many flaps and doors on the thing that clearing a paperjam (of which we had one over the past 2 years, and it was my fault for loading the paper crooked) was simple and quick. I especially like the separate loader tray that easily accepts envelopes, cards and (my favorite) CD labels. After you''re done with the loader tray, it folds up into the unit.

We also have the 4050 TN''s (has an additional paper tray) at work I can attest that these puppies can handle a seriously high volume of print jobs flawlessly. I don''t know what the pages-per-minute number is, but I can''t imagine you needing anything to be much faster.

Purchased printer approx. two months ago. Super fast and easy setup. One small downside: unable to print more than one sheet of paper or envelope at a time with drawer one (single sheets only) but does a great job with large capacity printing (drawer 2/holds up to 600 sheets) which is what I need the most. Ink quality is great and found a super deal for a 6000 print capacity toner cartride/$26.00 w/o tax and shipping on web! And since I print lots of forms over a given month, I love the speed and simplicity. Saves me time, energy and money. No longer have to run to a print shop for copies. Whew, so glad I purchased would do again in a heart beat!

January 26, 2011

Wanted to give everyone an update about my printer and to let you know that it is still going strong after all this time and a whole lot of pages (WHEW!) Deduced how to print more than one envelope and continued sheets at a time from drawer one (had to refigure a few things in the printer settings) and now its working like a top. Have had no smears, no paper snags and still on my second cartridge (of 6000 sheets) since my first review. Folks, I''m still smiling and thankful that I had purchased this printer when I did. It has really been a blessing to me in more ways than you can imagine from scanning and printing, to making large groups of copy and from those simple "hurry up" sheets that I need to print at the very last minute. When my printer is not in use it goes into powersave mode (sleep). But not to worry, at a slight click to print, it awakens quickly and steps right into gear. Thanks again Amazon for this great offer. I don''t miss my former Xerox one bit!

I bought this as a refurbished product but it''s built like a tank and has been running without a hitch since I purchased it. Well worth the price, shipping and packaging were outstanding. Would buy again in an instant.

This printer is worth every penny, we bought it when they came out with this model, so we paid full price. I do not regret it in the least. We have over 90,000 prints and it still works great. Its still in our office and thats all we use.

I have at least one to two of this model printer in the offices I work at because they are so reliable, and need minimal maintenence. The toner last for many sheets of printing (never counted, but I know I probably go more than 1000 sheets at least). The printer rarely jams (except when I used really cheap thin paper), and the secretaries love the sheet feed selection if having to use overhead paper for a letter. The quality of the print (i believe up to 1200dpi) is great for black and white. Highly recommended investment, quite likely one of the last printers your office will need.

Also, the color was light enough that the pictures were still clear and green was perfect for a holiday letter.

HP Color Laserjet 3600DN Printer

HP Color Laserjet 3600DN Printer. 17PPM Black and Color, 600X600 Dpi, 128MB Ram(

After searching a number of reviews from users, magazines, and other sources I finally decided to replace my 12 year old LaserJet 5, and two color inkjet printers with the HP 3600dn. I actually ordered a refurbished one. The hardest part about setting up this printer was lifting it out of the box. At over 60 pounds, it is not something you are going to just move around on a whim.

This printer works fine under Linux. I connected it to the LAN using the ethernet cable and loaded the HPIJS package on my system for the printer driver (available from your favorite distribution source), told CUPS (v1.3.4) to find new printers, and it worked.

Print quality is great, just remember that this is not a photo printer. It does a good job with pictures, but it is not meant to compete against the super high resolution printers that can print on photopaper. The built in duplexer works well and saves a lot of trouble when you want to print a large double sided document. This is not a quiet printer, it makes a fair amount of noise while it is working. It sounds a lot like a large copy machine. This is no problem for most office environments, but it might be suprising if you are used to smaller inkjet printers.

The tipping point in choosing this machine over some of the much cheaper models available was the overall cost of ownership. Over the long term this printer will cost less per page for both color and black&white printing than many of the less expensive printers out there. Check out the figures on Tom''s Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/02/02/color_laser_printers_2/page9.html

The question really comes down to your expected print volume.

Edit 2/6/09

After over a year of operation this printer is still doing a great job.

This a a really great printer for our office.

It is a little load when it is printing but the quality over shadows the noise.

Wireless connection to the printer wa pretty easy. We have 4 offices that print to it with out any problem.

It holds a good amount of paper and the duplexor has been great to use as well.

Color pages are great as long as you are not trying to print photos on photo paper. It doesn''t do so great in that department.

Fast and reliable is what we were looking for and that is what we got.

This HP is networked and has duplex (double sided printing), both were absolutely necessary to us. It has the usual downfalls of HP software, when set up to do a custom job it won''t accommodate it as stated. This has been a problem with other HPs we have had. I have to use other software to get it to print to its true potential. Very frustrating. But having gone thru this before it was expected. Other than the fact that it doesn''t work at all as stated it is a decent printer. The color is very good, I have not attempted printing a photo as I have a dye sublimation printer, but the color used in other printing is very good. Paper does matter, good finish produces crisp, clean color where poor cheep paper produces dull , off color. I''m unable to print certain sizes of paper because it doesn''t want to. GREAT!:( Customer service at HP is non existent, they couldn''t help. Of corse they blame it on the OS, who clearly say that it''s HP''s problem. So great, I have a printer that the reviews say is a problem and doesn''t work as it should, and many others have the same issue.

So the printer has now run out of ink, WELL the cost to replace it is 582.99 + shipping, REALLY!!!!!!!!!!! What a rediculous price. I have finally, exhaustively figured out ways to work around the printers shortfalls and now I have to junk it. I''m not happy.

Pros: NETWORKABLE!! Full unit functionality over the wired network environment; fast color printing; separate color cartridges.

Cons: Loud!

Bottom-Line: The "HP 3600dn" should be given serious consideration.

The need for medium footprint workgroup/ departmental network attached color laser printers can never be overestimated in my experience. And when it comes to this class of printer, no company does it better than Hewlett Packard, and the "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" is a good representative of this class. The "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" is a reliable, medium footprint color laser printer that is easy to use and ships with a 100-sheet paper tray, as well as a 250-sheet add-on paper tray.

In the Box

The Product

The "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" is a color LaserJet printing device that allows you to print, in vibrant colors producing printouts with realistic images on a variety of HP color LaserJet paper stock. The HP 3600dn is designed with HP''s system of enhanced color technologies including the company''s new ColorSphere toner with patented additives.

The HP 3600dn (maximum monthly duty cycle of 50,000 pages ) is capable of printing 600 x 600 dpi documents at speeds of up to 17 pages per minute in both full-color and black and white, utilizing a 360MHz processor and 128 MB of on-board memory. The HP 3600dn can be fitted with a wireless 802.11 b/g LAN for setting the printer up on a wireless network, but the printer also has a separate built-in Jetdirect Fast Ethernet 10/100Mbps network interface. And if you don''t need either of these you can connect the printer directly to a computer using the included high-speed USB 2.0 port (USB cable not included).

The "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" ships with a duplexing unit for printing on both sides of the page and is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh computer and networks. The HP LaserJet 3600dn is a neat little unit and measures 15.7W x 20.07H x 16.7D inches and weighs-in at 61.6 pounds.

Network Setup

Before connecting the "HP LaserJet 3600dn" to a computer (USB), or network (Ethernet), the decision must be made to utilize one or the other communications medium, but not both. I installed the "HP LaserJet 3600dn" on a network utilizing the standard 10/100 (Jetdirect) Ethernet port provided in the back of the unit and assigned it the appropriate IP configuration parameters (an IP address, along with a Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway and DNS). The printer defaults to automatic IP assignment via DHCP, or Boot-P protocols.

Conclusion

I like the "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer." Though the replacement color cartridges can be pricey (up to $130.00 per), there are four of them (black, cyan, yellow & magenta) so they can be replaced out of step with each other, thereby lowering costs. The printer wakes up from "power-save" mode quickly and spits out the first sheet in a reasonable amount of time. Even on standard 20lbs LaserJet paper stock the finished product is crisp, sharp, and vibrant.

One quibble: this printer is loud! Okay, two quibbles. In addition to the printer being loud when it prints, HP 3600dn drops its IP information once in a while. When this happens I turn the printer off then back on; this refreshes the IP information. I have no idea why this happens; it might be a quirk in the Jetdirect card but it is not annoying enough to replacing it, yet.

Built-in wired Ethernet capability, optional wireless, and a standard duplexing unit make the "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" a versatile, flexible, departmental color unit that is ideal for a small workgroup setting; I wouldn''t install the unit on a floor with more than (40) or so users. If you or your medium-sized workgroup need a reliable color LaserJet printer that produces outstanding black & white and color output in a reasonable amount of time, the HP 3600dn should be given serious consideration.

Originally purchased a Kodak i2400 scanner and bought the Capture PRO software to go with it so we could auto index our scans with the barcodes on the sheets. Decided to upgrade to the i1405 so we could handle documents up to 11x17 (A3) in the feed tray. This was a significant jump in price (4x) but 45 PPM vs. a flatbed would have been worth it. Received the scanner, set it up and tried to scan my first batch using the Kodak Capture PRO software. Got an error message saying that my software license does not support this scanner.

Come to find out that Kodak has a sliding scale for licensing this software. Which is to say, the more expensive the scanner you buy, the more you have to pay to license the software! Buy a $600 scanner, pay $500 for the software. Buy a $2500 scanner, pay $1500 for the software. Same software. Only deploying to a single scanner. 3x the price.

So there''s nothing wrong the scanner it''s just the licensing policies of Kodak that I refuse to support.

Update 2/1/2013: Today Windows Update installed driver 61.93.2.77 dated 4/15/2010. It''s a version of the clunk driver that existed under Vista and Windows 7 rather than the improved driver that initially installed with Windows 8. You can''t set the printer to print at ProRes 1200 (1200 x 1200) at all times. Instead, it defaults to FastRes 1200 (600 x 600 with enhancements to make it look better).

I created customized 1-sided and 2-sided definitions as follows: Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printer > HP Laserjet P2055dn. Click Customize Your Printer > Preferences. Click General Everyday Printing under Printing Shortcuts. Then click Paper/Quality and select ProRes 1200. Click Printing Shortcuts, then Save As... and save your setting as "1-sided". Do the same for Two-sided (Duplex) Printing and save your new definition as "2-sided". Use these shortcuts to print to avoid the substandard default print quality.

Since the WordPerfect envelope printing function automatically selects the printer''s default resolution, there seems to be no way to make this printer operate at ProRes 1200 when printing envelopes in WordPerfect. ProRes 1200 ought to be the default print quality or at least users should have the option of making it the default print quality. Isn''t there anybody at HP who knows how to write a competent printer driver?

Update re Windows 8: A new driver with simplified setup screens was installed by Windows 8x64. While it apparently is no longer possible to create your own print definitions, it finally is possible to force the printer to print in High quality at all times. Here are the steps needed to set up the printer in Windows 8:

Devices & Printers >> HP LaserJet P2055dn >> Printer Actions >> Customize Your Printer

From the Customize Your Printer screen:

1. Device Settings >> Installable Options >> Duplex Unit >> Installed

2. General >> Preferences >> Advanced >> Printer Features >> Image Quality >> High

3. Advanced >> Printing Defaults >> Advanced >> Printer Features >> Image Quality >> High

I didn''t experiment to see what happens if either 2 or 3 is set to Normal and the other to High. There obviously was no competent usability testing on this, as on Windows 8, which requires a third-party Start Menu (Start8) and third-party Desktop Gadgets (Gadgets8) to get back useful features that Microsoft eliminated.

Firmware dated July 2012 is now available on the HP website, but it is listed under Windows 7x64 and not Windows 8x64, perhaps due to an oversight, or perhaps due to a problem or incomplete testing. Since the 2010 firmware seems to be working with Windows 8x64, I''ll stick with it for now. See the HP firmware/driver update page:

h20000.

Previous update: 1. If your printer hangs on some jobs, it''s because you have a buggy version of firmware. The latest firmware version for this printer was released in October 2010. If you have earlier firmware, you should download the new firmware from the HP website. To see your firmware datecode, print out a Config Report by pressing the down arrow once, then OK, then the down arrow several times until you reach Config Report, then OK.

2. On three occasions, I have purchased the cheapest cartridge I could find on the Internet, and all have worked fine, with quality indistinguishable from HP''s expensive cartridges.

3. Finally, since I never print graphics, my comments apply to text-only printing.

Original review: When I switched to a new computer running Vista x64, I was forced to replace my HP Laserjet 5P because HP failed to provide a driver that worked competently with the 64-bit operating system. Based on the second comment to this review, HP apparently subsequently fixed the nonfunctional 5P x64 driver after Vista had been out for more than a year.

I chose the P2055dn because of auto-duplexing and the standard 128MB of RAM. I was initially disappointed by the poor print quality and noise of the printer with the factory default settings. After digging into the clunky, digital-only manual and much trial and error, I created new HP Printing Shortcuts for 1-sided and 2-sided documents with ProRes quality instead of the default FastRes quality, and I set the default Printing Shortcut to be my new 1-sided definition.

I also set the printer to Quiet Mode. To set the Quiet Mode, press the down arrow on the printer several times until you reach System Setup. Push the OK button, then toggle down to Quiet Mode with the down arrow. Press OK, then use the down arrow to toggle the Quiet Mode On, press OK, and press the carriage return key to go back to Ready.

After these changes, the printer runs slower, but the print quality is excellent and the noise level is similar to that of the 5P. I also turned off the aggravating low toner reminders that are worse than spam email.

To print envelopes without smudging, you may need to set the Tray 1 (top tray) paper type to Envelopes. In System Setup, toggle down to Paper Setup. Press OK, then toggle down to Tray 1. Press OK, then toggle down to Paper Type. Press OK, then toggle down to Envelope. Press OK, and press the carriage return key as many times as needed to go back to Ready. Afterwards, when printing an envelope in WordPerfect or Open Office, the yellow light will flash after you hit print. Then you have to press the OK button on the printer for the envelope to feed and print.

Got this printer to replace my year-and-a-half-old, out-of-warranty HP LaserJet P2015d (which, like many, many printers of that model, developed a fatal formatter board problem). The P2055dn, like the P2015d, works great with my Macs and printing wirelessly while connected to an Airport Express, and directly via USB.

Because my P2015d died prematurely, and because the problem with that model was widespread and widely documented, I purchased a 3-year extended service plan from HP (hpshopping.com, HP product #UK929A) for around 60 USD, which essentially extends the warranty two years beyond the included one-year warranty. I''d recommend anyone buying a P-series LaserJet get an extended service plan: these printers work great, but are built somewhat cheaply, using lower-quality materials than HP''s top-of-the line, business-oriented laser printers costing 1000 USD and up.

It''s a shame to reward HP for their poor craftsmanship by buying another one from them, but for the year and a half the P2015d worked, it worked flawlessly. For my needs, this printer in combination with the extended service plan is the right balance of cost, performance, and longevity.

Chose to buy this printer for the following reasons: (1) Tired of replacing inkjet cartridges (2) Built in networking (3) Automatic duplex printing to save paper and (4) Didn''t care for color (since 90% of the time, we manually adjust print jobs to do B/W anyways) not to mention replacing ink/toner is ALOT cheaper!

Product was extremely easy to install and set up. Was worried about the noise level after reading reviews, but after having used it for myself, noise level does not bother me since it is completely silent on ready/standby and we''d choose quicker noisier printing over slower quieter printing any day. We were quite happy with our purchase for the first several print jobs the problem came after we tried to manually feed an envelope. Every time we tried to print afterwards, we''d get an error saying to clear a jam on tray 2. Obviously, we knew that there wasn''t a jam because the envelope got printed (quite well, btw) and there were no jams prior to that (we checked anyway).

So we called HP support with the mindset that we''d probably have to return the product for refund/exchange since we don''t have very high expectations of customer support to begin with. The first surprise was that we got a hold of a real person within probably a minute at most. The rep went through the usual troubleshooting procedures that you might expect, but found nothing interesting. Then after placing me on hold for about 5 minutes, he came back and asked me to try and follow some instructions to remove the main roller from the top of the paper tray. This was the first procedure that we weren''t expecting as it was somewhat involved and getting the roller back on was even more trickier. Nevertheless, with my wife''s help (she has smaller hands) we were able to get the roller back on (after putting the rep on hold for about 10 minutes). At this point, the only interesting thing discovered as to the cause of the paper jam indicator was that the main roller in fact does NOT move when it is supposed to in trying to feed itself the paper. So while we were getting a bit closer to trying to solve the problem, it also seemed as though we were exhausting all of the procedures the rep could offer in trying to figure out now what''s causing the roller not to move that is, until after he put me on hold for yet another 5 minutes and came back with the second surprise which I would have never thought they''d ask me to do over the phone. They asked me to completely remove the right side panel of the laser printer with a screw driver. Once we did that we noticed a plastic arm that was obviously not connected to anything else and moving freely. We had a hard time explaining to the rep exactly what we were looking at, so we asked if we can snap a few photos and send it to him. Having received them, he pointed out to us where this dangling arm was supposed to hook up to and lo and behold, that fixed the problem! The rep was quick to point out that the procedure of opening up the side panel is something they don''t recommend the average user to do, but because we were able to take off the main roller and put it back on we unknowingly passed this little test to show we were quite competent to go even further.

Having said all of this, we were quite ecstatic to have a working printer again without having to go through the pain of shipping it back, not to mention we were quite pleased with the price of this model since there is no other HP-branded laser printer of this price that has both network capabilities and double-sided printing!

Although the total duration of the call with HP''s customer support was about 2 hours, we couldn''t be happier with this product along with their customer support if HP is successful in providing similar levels of support and value to other customers who purchase this item. Hope you enjoyed this review as I tried to be fair and include a lot of details so that it might be beneficial to some people out there who might encounter a similar problem.

I bought this printer to replace a similar HP printer (LaserJet 2100M) whose paper transport had become unreliable. My experience with this one has been good and generally consistent with the majority of other reviews here. Based on what I read, I was prepared for a noisy device, but I have been pleasantly surprised. The printer is indeed noisy when initially powered on, but that lasts about 10 seconds, after which the noise level decreases to a low whirr for another 20-30 seconds, followed by complete silence until it is used. The noise level naturally increases when it is actively printing, but the level seems no worse that that of any other home printers I''ve used that print at the same speed. Some reviewers report having to turn on Quiet Mode, which reduces printing speed. I didn''t find that necessary; the default behavior (Quiet Mode off) was fine. Of course, some people are more sensitive to noise than others, and the environment in which the printer is being used is a factor, too.

The physical setup and installation instructions are comprehensive and flawless. I especially like the animations showing how to remove hidden pieces of packing material, which I might not otherwise have gotten right. The configuration process is also very clear (I''m using the network interface, not USB) and worked without a hitch. Well done, HP.

If you plan to use this printer for straight-through printing, be aware that the paper comes straight out of the back, meaning that you must leave sufficient space behind it. To activate th straight-through paper path you simply open a door at the rear within a larger panel that also opens (for clearing jams). It''s important to get this right, and while the documentation is explicit, the warning is easy to overlook, and it''s easy to make a mistake in practice. Finally, there is no bin to catch the paper coming out the back, so you have to make other provisions. Of course, none of this is relevant for the normal printing path, which deposits the paper in the main output bin on top.

Overall, a very satisfactory printer for my home office.

Had to replace this machine twice because I couldn''t believe the bad quality I was getting from HP. I''ve never had a machine from HP that I''ve been disappointed with until now. I ran a test printed a large black box on plain paper and card stock on an old Laserjet 4L and and this "NEW" d2155dn. Hands down the 4L was far more darker and clean. The toner didn''t even fuse!! on the card stock with the 2055. Yes, I did make sure my settings were correct for paper type. We found this out trying to print award certificates on card stock. The lettering looked like it had flaked off. The black box on plain paper wasn''t bad but it was still no were near the quality of the older machine. Text on plain paper was great and if you do not print much graphics this is a good machine as it is well priced and rather fast.

I purchased this printer from thesource in Canada for ($20, yeah i know it''s crazy but I guess it was my luck)and i absolutely love it. I first purchased Canon Mp280 which I returned since it stopped working after two days and I didn''t like the print quality, so I purchased this printer which was on sale, I know canon makes good quality printers but I have to say HP is right up there with them. The print quality is excellent as well as the scan quality, just perfect.

Bought it on the cheap from walmart $39, seemed like a steal, but I was the one that got stolen from. It printed 4 pages very decent quality the day that I bought it, and seemed to do adequate scans and copies. However, about 3 weeks later when I tried to print a document the printer refused to sense that there was paper in the printer feed. I wasted 10 minutes trying to get it to accept the same paper that had been sitting in the tray when it had printed before, but no luck , just a flashing out of paper light. Then a few minutes later when I pressed the copy button it started flashing that it was out of ink, but the cartridges had only printed 4 pages. I got so mad with this flimsy plasticky cheaply made printer that I just tossed it in the trash, rather than go thru the hassle of returning it. My moms HP printer which had worked fairly reliably for 2 years of moderate home use, has also suddenly developed a problem with accepting paper. I think I have had enough of HP products for a while.

I needed a low cost all in 1 printer. I was skeptical of this model at first until i tried it for myself. I have to say that features for the price are good. The print quality is great, and it plain just works. I have always liked HP products though so i was willing to give them a chance even though the reviews were mixed.

I purchased this printer last summer as a portable solution. The price was right on the printer, but I should have immediately been suspicious. The software options do not allow me to select Draft quality (it''s grayed out no matter what I do). This printer goes through VERY EXPENSIVE ink like water. I''m replacing the cartridges every 20-30 printed pages to the tune of $30 to replace both cartridges. I tried the XL version of the cartidges, which are supposed to last 3 times longer ($55 for both) and it went through the ink even faster!!! I think I printed 5 pages in color at the lowest quality the software would allow before the light came on again. The scan and copy functions work great, print quality is good, but the ink price is a show-stopper. As soon as I''m done with the current ink I have in reserve, I''m getting rid of the printer.

  • Item is not returnable

Although it was not the fastest shipment, the packaging in which it arrived was well taken care of and the product was unharmed. The first time I printed a page the ink was fresh and vibrant. I recently printed a picture and the quality (even set on high resolution 320 dpi) was NOT good. I want to think it might have been the picture file and not the ink so I gave this product a 4 star rating. Hope I do not regret purchase.
