After searching a number of reviews from users, magazines, and other sources I finally decided to replace my 12 year old LaserJet 5, and two color inkjet printers with the HP 3600dn. I actually ordered a refurbished one. The hardest part about setting up this printer was lifting it out of the box. At over 60 pounds, it is not something you are going to just move around on a whim.

This printer works fine under Linux. I connected it to the LAN using the ethernet cable and loaded the HPIJS package on my system for the printer driver (available from your favorite distribution source), told CUPS (v1.3.4) to find new printers, and it worked.

Print quality is great, just remember that this is not a photo printer. It does a good job with pictures, but it is not meant to compete against the super high resolution printers that can print on photopaper. The built in duplexer works well and saves a lot of trouble when you want to print a large double sided document. This is not a quiet printer, it makes a fair amount of noise while it is working. It sounds a lot like a large copy machine. This is no problem for most office environments, but it might be suprising if you are used to smaller inkjet printers.

The tipping point in choosing this machine over some of the much cheaper models available was the overall cost of ownership. Over the long term this printer will cost less per page for both color and black&white printing than many of the less expensive printers out there. Check out the figures on Tom''s Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/02/02/color_laser_printers_2/page9.html

The question really comes down to your expected print volume.

After over a year of operation this printer is still doing a great job.

This a a really great printer for our office.

It is a little load when it is printing but the quality over shadows the noise.

Wireless connection to the printer wa pretty easy. We have 4 offices that print to it with out any problem.

It holds a good amount of paper and the duplexor has been great to use as well.

Color pages are great as long as you are not trying to print photos on photo paper. It doesn''t do so great in that department.

Fast and reliable is what we were looking for and that is what we got.

This HP is networked and has duplex (double sided printing), both were absolutely necessary to us. It has the usual downfalls of HP software, when set up to do a custom job it won''t accommodate it as stated. This has been a problem with other HPs we have had. I have to use other software to get it to print to its true potential. Very frustrating. But having gone thru this before it was expected. Other than the fact that it doesn''t work at all as stated it is a decent printer. The color is very good, I have not attempted printing a photo as I have a dye sublimation printer, but the color used in other printing is very good. Paper does matter, good finish produces crisp, clean color where poor cheep paper produces dull , off color. I''m unable to print certain sizes of paper because it doesn''t want to. GREAT!:( Customer service at HP is non existent, they couldn''t help. Of corse they blame it on the OS, who clearly say that it''s HP''s problem. So great, I have a printer that the reviews say is a problem and doesn''t work as it should, and many others have the same issue.

So the printer has now run out of ink, WELL the cost to replace it is 582.99 + shipping, REALLY!!!!!!!!!!! What a rediculous price. I have finally, exhaustively figured out ways to work around the printers shortfalls and now I have to junk it. I''m not happy.

Pros: NETWORKABLE!! Full unit functionality over the wired network environment; fast color printing; separate color cartridges.

Cons: Loud!

Bottom-Line: The "HP 3600dn" should be given serious consideration.

The need for medium footprint workgroup/ departmental network attached color laser printers can never be overestimated in my experience. And when it comes to this class of printer, no company does it better than Hewlett Packard, and the "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" is a good representative of this class. The "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" is a reliable, medium footprint color laser printer that is easy to use and ships with a 100-sheet paper tray, as well as a 250-sheet add-on paper tray.

The Product

The "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" is a color LaserJet printing device that allows you to print, in vibrant colors producing printouts with realistic images on a variety of HP color LaserJet paper stock. The HP 3600dn is designed with HP''s system of enhanced color technologies including the company''s new ColorSphere toner with patented additives.

The HP 3600dn (maximum monthly duty cycle of 50,000 pages ) is capable of printing 600 x 600 dpi documents at speeds of up to 17 pages per minute in both full-color and black and white, utilizing a 360MHz processor and 128 MB of on-board memory. The HP 3600dn can be fitted with a wireless 802.11 b/g LAN for setting the printer up on a wireless network, but the printer also has a separate built-in Jetdirect Fast Ethernet 10/100Mbps network interface. And if you don''t need either of these you can connect the printer directly to a computer using the included high-speed USB 2.0 port (USB cable not included).

The "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" ships with a duplexing unit for printing on both sides of the page and is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh computer and networks. The HP LaserJet 3600dn is a neat little unit and measures 15.7W x 20.07H x 16.7D inches and weighs-in at 61.6 pounds.

Network Setup

Before connecting the "HP LaserJet 3600dn" to a computer (USB), or network (Ethernet), the decision must be made to utilize one or the other communications medium, but not both. I installed the "HP LaserJet 3600dn" on a network utilizing the standard 10/100 (Jetdirect) Ethernet port provided in the back of the unit and assigned it the appropriate IP configuration parameters (an IP address, along with a Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway and DNS). The printer defaults to automatic IP assignment via DHCP, or Boot-P protocols.

Conclusion

I like the "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer." Though the replacement color cartridges can be pricey (up to $130.00 per), there are four of them (black, cyan, yellow & magenta) so they can be replaced out of step with each other, thereby lowering costs. The printer wakes up from "power-save" mode quickly and spits out the first sheet in a reasonable amount of time. Even on standard 20lbs LaserJet paper stock the finished product is crisp, sharp, and vibrant.

One quibble: this printer is loud! Okay, two quibbles. In addition to the printer being loud when it prints, HP 3600dn drops its IP information once in a while. When this happens I turn the printer off then back on; this refreshes the IP information. I have no idea why this happens; it might be a quirk in the Jetdirect card but it is not annoying enough to replacing it, yet.

Built-in wired Ethernet capability, optional wireless, and a standard duplexing unit make the "HP 3600dn Color Laser Printer" a versatile, flexible, departmental color unit that is ideal for a small workgroup setting; I wouldn''t install the unit on a floor with more than (40) or so users. If you or your medium-sized workgroup need a reliable color LaserJet printer that produces outstanding black & white and color output in a reasonable amount of time, the HP 3600dn should be given serious consideration.
