Brother LC613PKS Color Ink Cartridge - 3 piece color Pack - Retail Packaging-Cyan/Magenta/Yellow
  • Yields up to 325 pages per cartridge @ 5% coverage
  • Innobella Ink + Paper = Genuine Brother Quality
  • Ink droplets of 1.5pl (picoliter)
  • Genuine Brother Supplies
  • For use with DCP-165C, DCP-385C, DCP-585CW, MFC-290C, MFC-490CW, MFC-5490CN, MFC-5890CN, MFC-6490CW, MFC-790CW

These are original (not generic) catridges for Brother printers.

We have ordered these several times before. They print well, no mess, are easy to remove and install.

The ink is very long-lasting, just don''t change the cartridge when the printer says it''s low. Wait until the printer tells you the cartridge is EMPTY.

These ink cartridges work brilliantly, their slim designs are easy to handle and install into the printer. They should be part of the consideration of what printer you choose since if you are printing something with a lot of yellow for example, you do not have to replace a whole cartridge that includes 2 other colours. The price is right too, since this is cheaper than even using my professional discount card at my local office store and these are genuine Brother cartridges, not refills either.

The only irritation I do have with the printer is that it will tell you the ink is low-replace...I can print quite a few pages before it says will not print anynmore, the cartridge is empty. If I am in the middle of printing job, as soon as I replace the cartridge, it picks up where it stops. So, I always have refills sitting there ready to go when my printer stops rather than just low.

It would be helpful if reviews stated which shipper sent the product. Usually, Amazon links all reviews of the same product together, regardless of the shipper, so it is confusing when one person says the product is genuine, yet another states it is a generic rip-off.

I bought what was stated as a "genuine Brother product" for LC613PKS cartridge, shipped by Sophia Global. The cartridge was not recognized by the printer, and it was re-installed several different ways. I needed to print right away, so when I purchased and installed a genuine Brother cartridge from a local store, it worked just fine, so the problem was with the cartridge that I received from Sophia Global.

When I notified the shipper, Sophia Global, of the problem, they revealed that their cartridges are generic, NOT genuine Brother products.

The genuine Brother cartridges are very good products. The ones that Sophia Global sends are highly deceiving because the word "Brother" is printed on the cartridge. However, be forewarned that Sophia Global does not sell genuine Brother products, regardless of what the Amazon description claims.

Many people swear by "compatible" ink cartridges, by my experience over 20 years is that I''d rather spend a few more dollars for the piece of mind that a Brand cartridge gives you, without the worries of the cartridge not quite fitting right or gunking/gumming up the machine. Amazon''s price for the 3-piece color pack is comparable to other retailers, with the added benefit of no shipping charges, taxes, and fast delivery. And, of course, Amazon''s good reputation. Inks are vibrant and have a healthy "life," even with moderately heavy to heavy printing.

We''ve purchased various brands of shipping thermal labels in the past and have never had ones that were so poor in quality as these. They look very grainy and are hard for the bar code scanner to scan for USPS shipping, basically this makes them unusable. I would be willing to consider it possibly being the machine but since it started once we used these labels its quite clear its not the machine (especially since its thermal and not ink based)

We''ve sent a return request to the company and we''ll see how well they do customer service, I hope its better than the product but I''m not holding my breath.

And for those who say say they don''t work not sure what they are talking about this guy does sell good ones maybe your printer settings need to be adjusted darker or something.

Epson 17 x 22" Cold Press Bright Textured Matte Paper Save 6% off

Epson 17 x 22'' Cold Press Bright Textured Matte Paper
  • 25 x Sheets

Have used many Epson papers with my Epson 7900 printer. I shoot mostly portraits, but some still lifes, flowers, and other things with which to produce art prints for mounting, framing, sale, etc. The recent (fairly recent) release of Epson Cold Press and Hot Press papers caused me to try them out. Have tried both natural and bright versions of each in 8 x 10 and 17 x 22 (my favorite size for art printing). Hot Press is smooth, Cold Press is textured.

Bottom line, I have adopted Cold Press bright for nearly everything. It is fantastic for portraiture--absolutely perfect color reproduction (of course, the 7900 uses HDR pigment inks which are state of the art) on a solid heavyweight paper.

If you are serious about your photography or art, try the Cold Press bright in 17 x 22. About 4 plus bucks a sheet but worth every penny.

The first papertray sent didn''t work. I called HP (maybe I should have called Amazon) and they eventually sent another one (they really wanted to know if my printer was in warantee, which isn''t what didn''t work).

HP sent a new one in about 10 days and it worked fine.

The cost is high, but it now works perfectly giving me a legal size option. I wish it was 500 sheets so it would take full rheem of paper.

Samsung Electronics CLP-415NW Wireless Color Printer Save 22% off

Samsung Electronics CLP-415NW Wireless Color Printer
  • That''s the promise of the Samsung CLP-415NW.
  • Compact and quiet enough for your small business or home office, it features Samsung''s latest image processing and polymerized toner formulation, giving you brilliant color and super-crisp text and graphics.
  • Fast print speeds mean you spend less time waiting, while a lower cost per page translates to overall ownership that''s easy on your bottom line.
  • And with wireless printing functionality, the CLP-415NW is easily shared by just about everyone.

Let''s talk about the good parts of the printer first. It''s a relatively small footprint compared to other color laser printers I''ve used. I also find the speed to be very nice. It''s quick to print out what I send to it. The picture quality is very good. From all this standpoint, this is a very solid printer. It works as you would expect or even better. But then, there''s the wireless aspect.

I wanted to have this because I have a large number of wireless devices in the house, several tablets, a couple of laptops, and I want to be able to print without having to either plug into the wired part of my network or use some form of sneakernet to get the files from the wireless machine to a wired one. A wireless printer would be perfect. I jumped at the chance to get this set up in our system. The instructions for setting it up are very straight forward and I followed them to the letter (yes, I actually read the instructions). The printer wouldn''t connect to our network. I had recently changed from WEP security to WPA2, and I couldn''t get the printer to see the WPA security, so I tried switching it to WEP. Still nothing. I did some quick searches on the internet and determined that it might be the Macbook Pro I was using to configure it, so I reset the printer to the factory defaults through the little display window (not backlit, hard to understand what you''re doing with it, a royal pain) and connected everything to a desktop computer. Still no joy. I tried several different methods for seeing the printer from the network or getting the printer to see the network. I got a connection once, but it immediately went away.

So I called tech support. To Samsung''s credit, I got through relatively quickly (only about a 10 minute wait, which for consumer products is pretty good). The support guy was direct and helpful, but we had to follow the script. This meant restarting my network router, the machine I was trying to set things up from and the printer. Rebooting did no good. So we went through more of the script until he had exhausted everything I had tried. Then I outlined the extra steps I had taken, including modifying my network security several times. At this the guy decided to try to bump me up to tier 2 support. Again, all kudo''s to Samsung, I only had about a two minute wait for tier 2.

This guy was also helpful. I connected him up remotely to the computer I was trying to configure the server through (kid''s machine, no worries about getting anywhere useful on my systems). He then started walking through to make the printer connect to the network. It took him several different methods to get it configured, all connected through the USB, not wirelessly. Finally he connected directly to the printer through it''s default IP address (not a process in the documentation) and gave it a dedicated IP address because it was evidently having a hard time with my DHCP connection. From there he was able to get it connected to my network. I then tried two different wireless devices and it worked. YAY, time for at least a four star review, right?

Wrong. A day later I tried to print to the printer. No connection. I had to go through reconnecting the USB cable to it again to get it to connect to the network, which hadn''t changed in the intervening time. Now, I''m sitting and looking at a print queue that still can''t connect to the wireless printer.

In short, a very good printer, but I would not say that it is actually wireless since it can''t seem to remain connected to the system at all.

I''ll preface my review by making a few disclaimers:

1. I received this printer from Amazon Vine

2. I regularly work from my home office & I''m in a Master''s degree program = I print a lot of documents, papers, etc.

3. I already own an all-in-one (scan, print, copy, & fax) printer

That being said, I''ve had the chance to set up and use the Samsung CLP-415NW for approximately a week and I''m very impressed with this little printer. If you''re reading a review on a laser-jet printer then it''s relatively safe to assume you already know the differences between laser-jet & inkjet printing. If not, essentially laser-jet printers have been more of the workhorse of the printing world and are more frequently used in offices than homes. Laser-jet printers are historically more expensive but offset the hardware expense with cheaper toner cartridges rather than liquid ink found in inkjet printers. Laser-jet printers are also faster and more accurate than the typical inkjet printer and the per copy dollar amount is cheaper.

SETUP:

This little printer is heavier than the typical inkjet printer so be warned that if you can''t lift objects around 30lbs you might need a helping hand. The printer comes with the power & USB cable, a driver disc and a user manual. Setup is very easy, however, be warned that utilizing the WiFi functionality requires you to first use the included 3.3ft USB cable, install the Samsung driver software and then setup the printer through the GUI. Only then can you unplug the USB cable and have a truly WiFi ready printer. This is different than most current home-use inkjet printers that have the ability to join a network straight from the printer''s physical menu. The toner cartridges come pre-loaded in the printer but will need the safety tabs removed prior to first using. Setting the cartridges is very easy as is removing them. I should note that I did try using the WPS (kind of like an easy button for wireless setup) feature but could not get my router and the CLP-415 to communicate so I went with the wired setup first then activated the wireless capability from inside the GUI.

SOFTWARE:

Samsung''s software (Easy Printer Manager) is a sight to behold. Installing (I''m on Windows 7) was as easy as popping in the disc, confirming the install directory and waiting a few minutes for the software to finish installing. Much like Samsung''s consumer product line has instilled a sense of ease, intuition, and style in their menu''s and interfaces on everything from Samsung phones, televisions, and even appliances the same is true here. The GUI is clean, efficient, very responsive and designed to intuitively layout information on the printer. The HP''s and Dell''s of the printing world could learn something from Samsung in this department. Another neat feature is the inclusion of the SyncThru web service which features even more detailed information on the printer including estimated sheets remaining (per print cartridge), fuser life, usage counters and much more.

PRINT QUALITY:

I have little need to print pictures. In fact on the rare occasion that I do I simply order prints from the myriad of websites that offer those services. My interest is in quality, clear print-jobs on documents, the occasional graph and if needed a small picture subset in a Word document. My experience with this printer started off a little rocky my first two print jobs both jammed the printer but after clearing the jam I discovered I didn''t set the size of the paper correctly in the tray the printer was off and running perfectly. The print demo is a gorgeous, colorful picture of a butterfly on a bed of flowers very impressive. More importantly two documents I printed were fantastic with crystal-clear lettering, no smudges and both printed very, very quickly.

CONSUMABLES:

The CLP-415NW uses four toner cartridges (note that the included print cartridges yield less than the figures below at about (700 pages for color and 1000 pages for black):

Cyan: CLT-C504S (1,800 pg yield)

Magenta: CLT-M504S (1,800 pg yield)

Yellow: CLT-Y504S (1,800 pg yield)

Black: CLT-K504S (2,500 pg yield)

This printer also features some cool features to save on printing costs including Eco-Print. The included Eco-Print default settings save on everything from ink, energy and paper by reducing print quality, double-sided printing, grayscale, skipping blank pages, etc. There is even a simulation that indicates what your settings equal in terms of energy, toner and paper savings by percentage. Very cool feature for anyone tired of spending too much on printing!

You Might Like This Printer If:

If you''re looking for a small printer for a home office or small business setting this printer might be right for you. You''ll probably be the type of person who is more interested in printing reports, finished professional products or documents instead of printing pictures of the kiddies to hang on the wall. Likely you''re also tired of the higher costs associated with ink-jet printing, already have a scanner, copier, fax machine all-in-one machine and are looking to supplement your office with a dedicated printer.

UPDATE 11/12/12:

I''ve read various reviews on this printer and folks having issues with the WiFi setup. I recently had my own after returning home from a week-long trip in which the printer remained in "sleep" or low-power mode. I went to print a document as normal from my Windows 7 laptop and noticed that the print-job was sent to the printer, however, after a few minutes nothing was printing. I cancelled the job in the print queue and tried printing again with the same result. Eventually after power-cycling the printer (same result no print) I booted up my desktop computer that I used to originally install the Samsung printer drivers. Once it was up I was able to print immediately from the desktop. I tried again printing from my laptop and this time my document was printed immediately. My setup is completely wireless (even from my desktop) though I''m thinking there was an issue initializing the printer and it could only be done by the machine that was originally used to configure the printer. It''s a strange issue and one that thankfully hasn''t reappeared.

Currently amazon offers this printer for 17% off the sticker price, and this makes it a great buy in my mind.

The 415NW is a colorless laser printer most small laser printers I''ve seen that do color don''t do them well, but this is an exception. It doesn''t do ''photo quality'' in my mind, but it will be sufficient for most every other need. The black and white looked very crisp and clean, and I had no complaints there.

If you''re looking for a laser printer you either do high volume printing or are thinking economically (ink is expensive for a laser printer, but per page is cheaper than an inkjet printer), and with that in mind this printer is pretty good. It has a several eco options for reducing printing costs further (greyscale, using less ink, and the like), so you can definitely get your money''s worth over time with the 415NW. When trying out using less toner, for example, I didn''t notice a big reduction in quality, so you won''t suffer for being economical.

One of the big draws of this printer is its wifiand internet-capability. It very easily syncs with your wifi network I found setup a breeze both on a mac and a pc. The printer has many different ways to connect to your pcs/network (usb, ethernet, etc), but I found the wireless to be easiest. I will admit that I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly the setup went.

There is an option to configure the printer to print from your smartphone/tablet, which I haven''t tried yet (I honestly have no need for the capability at the moment). I did configure it, however, and it was just as easy to setup as the wifi printing.

One note this printer is *big* for a home printer / home office printer. It weighs over 36 lbs and requires a 2x2x2 foot cube to sit in, essentially (the printer requires clearance on every side for ventilation/airflow purposes). This is larger than many other home laser printers, so it is something to be aware of.

---

Overall I can definitely recommend the 415NW if you''re in the martket for a printer in this price range. While it won''t do anything else (scan, fax, copy) it prints very, very well.

10/23 Update:

As promised, I have rated this one star due to the fact that for the last time it has lost connectivity to the PCs. I can still see the printer in my router on the network and ping it, so it''s not a connectivity issue. It just refuses to be detected by devices. I tried a Win 7 PC, Retina Macbook Pro, and an iPhone 4S. None of the devices were able to print. A little hard to blame drivers since we''re talking three totally different platforms. I was hoping the issues were finally gone for good but this printer is way too unreliable to be any use at all and thus earned the one star review. I think you can tell by my updates that I''ve given it more than enough chances. Also as promised, I removed the paper, put it in my reliable Epson Workforce 630 (which has performed admirably since day one), and powered the Samsung off. Maybe if I have a need for a USB only printer I will one day use it again. Until then, into cold storage it goes. Honestly, had this been purchased and not obtained through Vine, I would have likely returned it long ago. The Vine program at least gave it an opportunity to be objectively reviewed without fear of the dreaded return window closing. Steer clear and find another printer.

10/4 Update:

In fairness to the printer, it has worked flawlessly since the last update. Therefore, for now, I have updated my rating to "okay" based on how well it performs WHEN it''s working. However, this is the final chance. If I try to print one more time and get a comm error, it''s dropping back to one star and staying there. It''s also coming off my network at that point. I''m just trying to give it a fair shot.

09/30 Update:

If you wish to read my entire review, feel free, but as of this morning, I just tried printing from my PC and once again I got a comm error. I can, however, ping the printer, reach the management interface through my PCs browser and print to it from my mobile devices and Mac. This thing seems to randomly lose communication with individual devices. I really wanted to like this printer and if you read my entire review(s), you will see that I tried everything humanly possible short of sending it in for repair. However, a product should not be ths much of a headache right out of the box. Maybe I got a lemon, but based on my past few days of frustration and thinking the problem was resolved only to have it keep reappearing in inconsistent manner, I had to drop my original rating from four stars to one. I will contact Samsung support and try to get it repaired. It''s pretty obvious at this point that there''s something wrong with this printer. The problem is not my router because I never lost total connectivity with the printer, just sporadically among individual devices. I also have ZERO problems with all other printers, computers, mobile devices, game consoles, and televisions connected to the same router. It''s not the drivers because I''ve lost connectivity on four separate platforms (Windows, OS X, iOS and Android) at different times. I honestly think it has something to do with the sleep wake function. Every time I fix an issue, the printer works perfectly until it goes into sleep mode. When it wakes, there''s usually a new issue with seemingly different devices every time.

09/29 Updated Review:

The following update is my experience after writing my initia review. I left my initial review intact to point out the pros and cons of the printer when it works. However, I strongly suggest taking the advice in the update, especally if you are non-technical or a small business looking to avoid unnecessary IT costs.

****************************************************************************************************************************************************

After completing the printer setup on my network, PCs and mobile devices, it initially worked like a charm. I was very impressed with the printing speed, quality and ease. I was printing from my PCs, an iPhone and a Galaxy tablet. The first sign of trouble was when I lost the ability to print from my iPhone about an hour later. I just assumed it was a flaky app, especially since the Samsung tablet and my PC were still printing fine. However, I now see that the Airprint experience (described below) was a portend of things to come. The PC printed fine all day yesterday, so I figured all was well. Imagine my surprise when I subsequently attempted to print from my computer today and encountered the same exact problem as Airprint! The printer simply lost connectivity to my PC. I verified the host name, IP and MAC address in my router and verified I could still print over the network from the Galaxy Tab (using Android version of same app used on my iPhone), so I didn''t think it was a connection issue. I then tried connecting from a Mac and installed the mobile printing app on my iPad. Both were unsuccessful as well. The only thing that still worked at that point was my wife''s Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus. I then downloaded and installed the Samsung Easy printer manager software. After installing the software, I was able to locate the printer on my network and restore printing on my computer. I was able to print for most of the day and I thought my problem was solved. After restoring printing to the PC, I figured I''d try troubleshooting Airprint using tips from the user guide. I tried to configure Airprint directly through iOS instead of the Samsung app. I typed the printer''s IP address into the Safari browser on my iPhone and it displayed the message "SyncThru Loading" and a status bar that never completed. After a few minutes, I realized it was frozen, so I abandoned my efforts to restore Airprint printing and went back to my PC. Guess what? I couldn''t print from the PC again. I tried accessing the printer by IP through my web browser and could not reach it. I tried reaching it through Easy printer manager and couldn''t reach it through there either. I then tried pinging the printer''s IP and it said "destination host unreachable". Finally, I went to the physical printer and tried to troubleshoot through the LCD panel. That''s when I dicovered the printer was completely frozen. None of the panel buttons worked and the LCD just sat there with "Ready" displayed. The only way to free up the printer was to do a hard power cycle using the main power switch on the rear. After powering the printer back on, I printed a configuration page using the LCD panel. The IP address was still the same, so it wasn''t a DHCP problem. I figured for kicks and giggles, I''d try setting a static IP. I logged into the printer using the web browser. Easy Print Manager was utterly useless because it still couldn''t find the printer, so I uninstalled it and will perform all management through the web interface instead. I set a static IP with a different last octet and viola! Everything now works, my PC, both tablets, my iPhone and the Mac. Hopefully, it simply didn''t like the original DHCP assigned IP and simply needed a change. I just wish it would have failed outright instead of working sporadically. For that reason, I''m not 100% confident that was the root cause. I''ll keep my eye on it and if it fails again, that''s it. Honestly, for the average home user or small business without a dedicated IT staff, I suggest finding something a little more reliable. I''ve installed hundreds of network business printers as well as dozens of personal printers for myself and friends and have never encountered a printer this hard to configure that wasn''t defective. That''s why I said I''m not 100% sure a "bad IP" was necessarily the final issue. I verified there were no conflicts on the network with that IP and the IP never changed from initial setup.

Original Review

------------------------

After unboxing this printer, the first thing I did was make a bee line to Samsung''s web site to download the latest drivers. I never used bundled driver disks unless online drivers are unavailable or not newer than bundled driver. I downloaded the basic driver and figured I''d start there. The basic driver package (under the drivers tab on the site) worked just fine. It installed the printer on both my WiFi network and PC. All other software is optional (mainly for management, etc). I chose the USB setup option. They supply a USB 2 cable with the printer. If you don''t want to connect via USB to configure printer, you can try to set the WiFi via the LCD panel, but it''s only a two line basic display, so it''s not quite as efficient or as quick as configuring WiFi during the driver install over USB. Most users will find that the basic drivers alone will suffice. Once I completed the printer setup, the printing was fast and great. I printed a photograph on plain inkjet paper. The first page scared me because it had white specks all over the image. I (correctly) assumed it was likely due to it being the very first print after the printer had been transported and jostled all about. I printed the same image a second time. The second print was flawless with rich color saturation, accurate colors, decent sharpness and no artifacts on the image. So, now that I''ve setup the printer and had a couple days to print with it, here are my pros and cons:

Pros

----

Fast printing. Unlike the CLJ printers at my job, this one doesn''t "warm-up" with random clicking and whirling sounds for a minute or two after jobs are sent. It processes and prints immediately, like my inkjet

Excellent print quality, better than an HP 3550 color laserjet and rivaling a Xerox 9303 color wax printers that I use at work. Granted, these printers are older, but the 3550 never looked as good as the results from the Samsung. The newer (both in age and technology) Xerox is closer in quality.

Android mobile printing is reliable and great. I installed this on a tab 7.0 Plus and Galaxy S3 and it works like a charm. I wish the same could be said about iOS and Airprint (see the below cons for more info on that)

Auto-sleep function with separate sleep and power buttons to conserve energy

Management software for your PC is available to monitor the printer, see toner status and change printer settings

Cons

----

The LCD panel is not backlit. Some of the buttons are lit but not the LCD. It seems minor but the LCD is all but impossible to read without optimal light and placement conditions

The USB port is loose (at least on my printer). The slightest pressure on the cable caused it to pop out several times while I was connected to configure WiFi. It wasn''t that big of an issue because I knew it was temporary but it may be an issue for those planning to connect via USB instead of through their network.

The top "power" button (circle with intersecting vertical line at top) only wakes the printer. It doesn''t put it to sleep.

Although the mobile printing works fine on Android devices, iOS devices are more finicky. I downloaded the Samsung mobile printing app and connected to the printer with my iPhone 4S, but after the printer went to sleep the first time, I could no longer connect from my iPhone. Whenever I try to print, it searches and says no printers found. I get the same result through the Samsung app. I tried everything, even rebooting the phone, but it will not connect to the printer neither through native airprint nor the Samsung app. For the record, the printer is on Apple''s list of Airprint compatible printers. I''ll keep trying to figure it out, but at least the Android devices print, for now.

The price of the toner cartridges is very expensive. Replacement cartridges are a hundred bucks and it takes four. It almost makes $30 inkjet cartridges seem cheap by comparison. On the plus side, at least the toner won''t dry up on you before you can get full use from it liek a lot of inkjet cartridges do.

Although I''m not thrilled about the cost of replacement toner, I''m hoping the actual usage and less replacement frequency will make it at least as evenly cost efficient as an inkjet, if not more. Other than the iOS problem, all other aspects of this printer are very good. If that changes in the future I will certainly report back to advise.

Save 22% off

I''m happy with the print quality, but frustrated with the network stability.

Once the initial set-up was complete I could print from my Mac and iOS devices (AirPrint and mobile print). The next morning none of my devices could locate the printer. A power cycle resolved it and I was able to print again. A few hours later the printer disappeared again. I can ping the IP, but no AirPrint.

Samsung suggests updating the Firmware, but the updater is only available for Windows.

Bottom line: This could be a great printer if Samsung can solve the network issues, until then I''d look elsewhere, especially if you''re looking for Mac and/or AirPrint support.

Update:

AirPrint is still unreliable. I''ve found if I reset the printer I can print for a few hours before it disappears again.

I''ve attempted to contact support twice. The first time they said to enable SNMP (already was). The second time they told me to look for timeout settings in the SyncThru Web interface (no specifics, just look around and try to change something).

The issue with Samsung support is continuity. There''s no case number assigned and they don''t accept replies to their e-mails. Once you get a message the only way to follow up is to open another request and start over again.

Brother DCP-1000 Digital Copier, Laser Printer, and Color Scanner

Brother DCP-1000 Digital Copier, Laser Printer, and Color Scanner
  • Multifunction digital copier, laser printer, and color scanner
  • Print or copy 10 pages per minute
  • Automatically copy multi-age documents with 30-sheet auto feeder
  • Copies documents up to 8.5 by 14 inches
  • 600 x 2400 optical, 9600 x 9600 interpolated dpi resolution color scanner

I''ve had mine for two full years, and I used it on most days. As a teacher, the convenience of sticking a book on the flatbed, pressing 25, and then hitting the green button, and having it print out 25 copies very quickly while I shave is... invaluable. I, for one, have never experienced any problems with the unit. I''ve replaced the toner twice -a very simple procedure, and it''s some of the cheapest toner around, giving me some of the lowest per page costs of laser printers. (Compare Brother toner to, say, Samsung toner.)

I don''t experience paper jams, as I have with every other printer I, or my family members, have owned. The scanner integrates seemlessly with WinXP. Just a few minutes ago, I stuck on a cookbook, clicked "My Computer" in WinXP, then double clicked on the Brother icon, and it started the scanner wizard. I chose "greyscale image," it scanned it in maybe fifteen seconds, and then I clicked on "send to email" and I sent off the recipe to a friend of mine. The entire process took me about two minutes. It''s not a scanner I''d use for archiving my photo collection, but it is good enough for most uses, and can copy a photo to my photo printer for a decent job.

I''ve been extremely happy with it. Cheap to operate for copying and printing, inexpensive toner with easy replacement, no printer jams. Two years service, and no decrease in quality. The "toner low" light does come on too early, but I just keep printing, usually a couple of hundred more pages, until I see fading, before I actually replace the toner. While this at first annoyed me, now I use the light as the "go order some toner so you have it around" light.

I work for a sole practitioner attorney. When the HP LaserJet III finally died at the office, we tried running the office on an Epson ink jet printer for several days. As that was completely inadequate, we looked around for an inexpensive laserprinter which would handle a duty cycle of about 3,000 pages per month. We decided on the DCP-1000 because it had a built in copier with sheet feeder, was reasonably fast, and was inexpensive. We have had it for about half a year, and the only thing I really dislike about the unit is the way it spits paper out the front without an adequate recepticle.

The printer is excellent for the size of our projects, which tend to be less than 30 pages, and has stood up to the paper output of our office, which includes four networked workstations. It is also nice to have a copier with a sheet feeder for small jobs so we don''t have to run to the copier half way across the building we work in. The one drawback with the copier is that the automatic sheet-feed occasionally misfeeds, crumpling up the sheet to be copied.

Several reviewers have commented about the price of the replacement drums and the speed with which they and the toner cartridges are used up. The fact is that the toner refills are only about $30, which is less than half the price of the cartridges used on almost any other laser printer. So, the fact that you have to spend $120 on a drum every 20K copies or so is the trade-off. This means it is no more expensive per copy than just about any other laser printer.

It would cost at least an extra $150 to purchase any other printer/copier and get the same functionality. For around $300, you get print quality which is good enough to hand to a judge, a copier with a multisheet feeder which makes good 600 dpi quality copies, and a color scanner which is adequate for occasional use and for OCR. This makes it a very cost effective unit for a home or small office. The unit easily pays for itself very quickly. The owner of the building where we lease our office has a central copier. He charges 5 cents per copy made on the central copier. (Kinko''s charges about 9 cents per copy!) The marginal cost with the Brother is about 2 cents per copy. Just on the difference in cost of copies, this unit paid for itself in less than 10,000 copies.

As an update, after a little more than a year and close to 100,000 pages printed, the sheet feeder broke. (We replaced the drum 4 times.) Rather than have it repaired, we purchased a Brother MFC-8440 because, while we were happy with the product, we wanted a heavier duty, faster machine with a built in fax. I have the DCP-1000 at home, and anticipte getting it repaired.

Afterthought: Brother includes ScanSoft PaperPort and OmniPage Pro with the printer. Paperport is a scanning and document management application which will allow you to scan, print, organize, view and save copies of documents in PDF format. It interfaces with most common document handling and word processing software. You can drop and drag the thumbnail of a scanned document into an icon of the wordprocessor or other document handling program and it will automatically convert the document to text or other graphic format for editing, emailing or viewing. It is a bit slow to load, but it is a wonderful visual document and software interface. Unfortunately, the version supplied by Brother does not save directly to PDF format, but instead uses a proprietary format. It is also virtually impossible to uninstall. I recommend downloading the printer drivers from Brother and purchasing a newer version of Paperport.

Finally a low cost laser copying solution. I purchased this machine when it first arived a few months ago and have been very pleased. Not only does it copy, but it is a 10ppm laser printer and color scanner. Not bad for the price. This little guy sits right on my file cabinet and saves me countless trips to the larger copy machine. Has made life so much easier.

You can read all the reviews for all the other printers & compare the features or you can make the decision easy by getting this super value printer/copy/scanner & enjoy its printing quality within 12 minutes of opening the box.

I have a 2004 Compaq, Windows Home XP system. Set up was accomplished seemlessly the first time with the CD-ROM. This is the way it''s supposed to happen. I opened the box, plugged the system into the computer with the USB, place the CD-ROM and followed the prompts and then set the printer as my default from the start menu and wow beautiful fast prints emerge from my command. The process took less than 12 minutes. It was so easy I did not have time to finish reading the instructions. I don''t know where the other people writing these threads got their problems. The speed may not be the fastest on the market by specs, but the prints come out almost as fast as you can deal with them & as fast as the printers at work costing 10 times as much. The copy quality & ease are great and will not

disappoint you.

The initial cost & long-term cost are low. Over the next 5 years, my high quality prints will be less than $0.02 each including the cost of the printer.

Who needs a fax anymore. All you get from faxing is poor quality resolution. With email and the built in scanner all the functions that you would ever need for faxing is accomplished right here & you have the documents stored in your emials & not in a drawer. Also you don''t need 2 phone lines or have the fax continually mess up your primary line. If I had a fax feature, I would not even hook it up, so why pay for a feature you don''t want & could compicate the picture.

All the other machines of this quality are more exspensive to purchase and operate, are larger in size & are more complicated to run. I don''t know how a home or small business could go wrong with this printer. A value priced home run.

Amazon got it to my house with standard shipping in 2 days. I am a happy customer with a product that fulfills its claims & purpose.

I''ve had this copier/printer for several months now and I find it to be a really cool and useful tool in my office. I can get really cheap compatible toner on the internet for it, so the cost of using it is therefore....cheap! Haven''t had any problems with the drum. But the way I see it, I''m saving a lot with the cheap toner, so when the drum goes out, oh well. The machine functions really nicely. I love the document feeder. In fact, I like the whole package so much that I just ordered another via the web for $245.00 shipped. Drums can be found at databazaar.com for just $118.00. My opinion on the naysayers....you just got yours from a bad batch.

I was quite skeptical when purchasing this product. Usually hardware that says it''s PC & Mac compatible falls short on one of those platforms. Not so here... this little printer works like a charm on my iMac. It''s a breeze to install, paper is easy to load, and the software is both graphically pleasing and incredibly easy to use. You can copy and paste addresses right into the program and it will check to see if it is a valid address, add the +4 to your zip codes automatically, and even print the USPS barcode on the label for faster sorting. It even integrates with Mac OS X and allows you to print labels by selecting anyone in your Mac''s address book. Also, printing your own postage is a huge convenience. There is no extra cost for buying postage online, just the cost of the label, which if bought in bulk or manufactured by a third party, is really quite cheap. For the convenience of not having to go to the post office to buy stamps, the cost of the labels is a fair trade-off. It makes addressing packages and envelopes a total pleasure instead of a hassle. You can also use the included USB scale to automatically calculate postage based on weight. This will calculate shipping for first class, as well as priority and express mail service. All around an excellent product and well worth the price.

Two Important Tips: 1) When installing a new roll of labels, there will be some sticky residue left from the glue put there to keep the spool from unraveling. Peel off the label with the sticky stuff on it before feeding it through your printer to prevent the residue getting on the paper feed roller. If the glue gets on the roller, it is likely to cause paper jams. 2) This printer uses thermal paper, not ink. The labels are best used for shipping, or things that require temporary labeling (less than six months). These labels WILL fade after time, and will fade very quickly if left in direct sunlight or in an overly hot environment. This is not a shortcoming of this printer, but of thermal paper technology in general. If you are looking to use this for long term labeling, I would recommend using a different labeler like a Brother P-Touch.

I was apprehensive because I needed to find a label writer and postage printer and postage scale all in one unit but I needed one that was compatible with Mac. I went ahead and bought this one for that reason. I installed it yesterday and it was super easy. I printed custom address labels with my company logo lickidy-split. This unit is inexpensive and everything it said it would be. No problem with the Mac install. The labels are self-adheasive and use no ink because they print on thermal paper. The replacement paper is a little pricy (20.00 per roll) but cheaper than having to buy paper AND ink. You have to get a Endicia account to print postage and that was easy as well. The basic package offered from Endicia with this printer is free monthly and it prints all kinds of postage, including international. HOWEVER, if you want TRACKING NUMBERS for your packages, you will have to upgrade to a monthly fee service (mine for Mac was about 16.00) to be able to get delivery confirmation, which is important to me. I don''t mind paying that fee to not have to go to the post office every day. Those people make me want to stab myself in the face. This little unit may very well have saved my life :)

I run a rapidly growing but small local and internet retail business and by far, my biggest pain and suffering has been due to printing shipping labels. I had two inkjet printers, and always one, the other, or both were acting up and I had to leave my office to go get someone else to print a shipping label for me, rushing to beat the postman. No more. This DYMO LabelWriter set up has been flawless worked every. single. time. without fail, hesitation, bug, human error. It is awesome. I love being able to print a first class stamp whenever I want one too no more digging through drawers to find an old stamp or two (since I hardly ever use them anymore). And one of my kids had done something (who knows what) to my old postal scale that rendered it unreadable, so the scale in this deal was what drew me to it in the first place. The scale works great, the printer is more than I ever dreamed of. I bought a few sets of labels that I didn''t need while trying to figure out how this was going to fit into my shipping routine, but Im sure they will get used for something one of these days. I am thrilled and am sold on the DymoEndicia thing that I never thought I would want to use because of the extra fees. That monthly fee is worth its weight in stress busting!

Wow, this thing is a frustrating piece of junk. It would work in theory, but in practice it is a big headache. Every time my machine is unplugged and then plugged in again (there''s no on/off switch to conserve power), the right side roll form feeds the ENTIRE ROLL of blank stamp labels through the machine. These are expensive and I don''t want to waste them so I have to re-roll the labels by hand and put them back in the machine. Then the next time it just unrolls the whole thing again and spits them all over my desk.

I also can''t get the machine to print a stamp on the right side roll--it says the machine is out of labels, though there is a full roll properly loaded into the machine. So there''s 44 cents down the drain.

Furthermore, I wanted to use it for Internet shipping, but the labels that come with the printer aren''t supported by Endicia, the postal software that this thing runs on. To print delivery confirmation or return address, you need a different kind of label. On top of that, Dymo makes an even bigger shipping label that also fits this size printer but isn''t supported by Endicia. How frustrating and pointless is that?

The scale works well and runs off your computer''s power so that part was cool, but this thing is going back in the box and back to Amazon.

**UPDATE. The packages I did try to ship using the included labels and the Endicia.com software were returned to me as undeliverable. Now I have to re-do the postage on these packages and fill out some forms to apply for a postage refund. Why, why, why do they not include the correct labels for mailing via Endicia.com?**

These are wonderful!!! They are perfect for my 5 year old daughter who loves art! We have also used them for school projects for my 8 year old. He had to make a book for a class assignment and these were the perfect last minute front and back items to make a book. They are very durable and would serve a multitude of purposes. Borders to pictures, cut out shapes to glue on other card stocks, scrap booking, etc.

I finally retired my 18 year old HP Laserjet 6MP. It still works, but the network printer box that I''ve been using with it is broken and my new computer does not have a parallel port on the back. The review on CNET for the OKI B411DN was very positive which led me to choose this printer. It was a true plug and play on my network. After attaching the cords and turning it on, my computer detected the printer on the network right away. I loaded the drivers from the included disk, and began printing. The speed and quality of the new OKI are many times better than my old 6MP workhorse. I''m very happy with it. It also has a smaller footprint and is lighter in weight than my old printer. Can you believe I paid over $1000 for that 6MP 18 years ago! I probably can''t even give it away now.

Buy B411DN - Laser Printer (2400) Now

I bought the B411DN model of this printer 3 weeks ago for my home network, selected the free shipping option and it arrived within 3 business days. Setup was pretty straightforward, although some of the Oki instructions were a bit out of order. One has to install the software from the enclosed CD before driving some of the setup function, but otherwise no problems. I have 3 PCs to connect, and elected to use the Oki website installer from each. This worked without a hitch.

We''ve used the printer quite a bit since then without any glitches or hitches. Its been all text and forms so far, and the print quality seems very good. I haven''t actually clocked the speed, but its much faster than the companion ink jet printer we use, and I can believe the advertised 35 ppm for text. Time to print start for a network driven job appears to be between 5-10 seconds, but once it starts it chugs along pretty quickly.

We leave it always powered on, although 60 seconds or so after power on (or after print job completes) it falls back into power saver mode, the silence of which leads me to believe it isn''t sucking up any watts of significance. If the advertised pages per cartridge holds up, then this will likely turn out to be far more economical than the ink jet.

Overall, I''d say this is a very good monochrome printer. Purchase price was, in my view, a pretty good deal given the performance, economy and good reviews on various websites.

This printer is excellent! Fast (even with duplexing), energy efficient, and sleek in design. LED technology is similar to Laser technology but more energy efficient (meaning less heat and curling) and less moveable parts which means longer lasting. And Oki is the innovator in this area. I was so tired of replacing color cartridges on my HP inkjet when all I do is print B/W for the most part. The B411 also seems extremely well built. Overall I am very pleased!

Coming from a SLOW Canon Bubble (ink) Jet printer that used ink like a Hummer uses gas, this OkiData B411DN (mine is BLACK) is like a Toyota Prius, except as fast as a Porsche.

I plugged the ethernet cable (not supplied) into my wireless router in the other room, and my computer instantly recognized it, but I still had to use the install CD. Did not have any issues with my MacBookPro, but I am running an older OS (10.58) and it works great! Within five minutes, I clicked print on a few pages, and before I made into the living room, all the pages were waiting for me, with immaculate prints. I then printed some high resolution pictures, and I like it. You can make out some artifacts, if you look closely, but it''s a LOT better than a Xerox machine (I haven''t used a Xerox in about a decade, so I''m sure they''re probably a lot better these days...)

The best part is how much I can print now! My ink tanks used to dry up, if I didn''t use them fast enough, and that old Bubble Jet would just drain $$$ from my wallet, and the heads clogged up. For about the same price as six (6) ink tanks (all the needed colors), I get a toner cartridge that lasts 1000 times longer! (just a wild guess)

I got it just in time for college, and INSTANTLY put it through it''s paces. I have to print SO MUCH for school, and this actually works out to be about HALF the cost of using the school''s labs, but the convenience factor multiplies my savings of money, time, and hassle to make my life so much easier. Black and white is all I need for school, and most other things can just be black and white. Color is for screens, man! I''d much rather have massive BNW WATERPROOF prints, rather than some smeared, expensive, ink-jet color.

It''s heavy, and it''s big, and my lights dim whenever I print something, but I don''t care. Love the wireless printing from any room in the house, and the black color goes well with my decor. I like how it''s all "closed" up when in use. The huge amount of paper is hidden, and it''s just this tight looking magical black box. I am also able to print envelopes, by using the "single feed" trays, and it''s easy! My professionalism has been compounded ten-fold! I seem legit now!

This is the second Brother multi-function printer I have owned. The old one worked perfectly for several years.

When I found out that Brother was offering this new MF Printer with 11 x 17 output capability I was tempted to buy one because I frequently print/fax/copy floorplan drawings. Then when I found out that it was less than $300 on Amazon I purchased one immediately and gave my old MF Printer to a friend.

I have not been disappointed. It was easy to set up and working in a matter of minutes. The warm up cycle at the beginning of a print job is a little slow, but fairly typical for this type of machine. I haven''t found any complaints with it. The ability to print/fax/copy/receive 11 x 17 drawings is awesome.

I fully expected that the downside to this printer would be the cost of the ink cartridges. Wrong again! Replacement Ink cartridges, in both black and color, were relatively cheap and available in XL and XXL capacities.

One last thing. This is not a photo printer. Color printing is sharp and acceptable for most business applications, but don''t expect to print photos.

This is a great, inexpensive business printer. I have been using it daily for about 6 weeks without so much as a hiccup. I highly recommed it.

The 11x17 scanner is the main reason I bought this machine. You just cannot find this platform size for the price. It is fast and the scan quality is very good. The other features life FAX, print and copy and generous paper trays are icing on the cake. 11x17 photos are superb, even when their source is very lo-res. Brother support has been punctual, well trained and have solved my ''operator'' trouble immediately...there has been no actual hardware issues. I am Very Satisfied with this product.

I bought this because I need to be able to produce color 11x17 drawings for my land surveying business. It was recommended by another surveyor. Even thought it''s slower than my copies or a laser printer, it''s very useful as a home backup. I also needed the scanning capabilities. I usually print out the survey and then sign it, then scan to PDF for delivery to my clients. It works great for that.

Want Brother MFCJ6910DW Business Inkjet All-in-One Printer Discount?

For a long time, I was dead set on getting a laser MFC (probably monochrome; can''t afford the color lasers and I rarely need color prints, although it is nice to distinguish hyperlinks and print web pages on rare occasions) to replace my old HP Photosmart C4280 printer/copier/scanner, which worked great but just couldn''t ever meet the level of performance that I need. I frequently scan or copy documents in 9x12" or 11x17" sizes (rarely larger, but it''s happened), which is impossible on my old machine; I also print out long documents (sometimes up to around 50pgs) in duplex regularly, which took forever and required me to feed each sheet through one at a time or spend time making sure I had them all oriented correctly and in the right order after I printed the odd pages on the first side.

The Brother MFC-J6910DW caught my eye because it, unlike all laser printers under the thousands of dollars, could scan/copy/print up to 11x17. Most only allow up to legal size, which is no more useful to me than 8.5x11. This machine makes my life so much easier with this ability, combined with the automatic duplex printing function as well as duplex scanning through the ADF. I was also pleasantly surprised by the relatively low ink cartridge cost per page it''s actually getting down into the realm of laser toner costs, which is MUCH better than the typical inkjet.

After owning the printer for a little over a week now, I can say it''s quite a pleasure to have. Set-up, including connecting to my home ethernet network, was a snap, and as soon as the drivers were installed on my computer from the included CD, I was able to do everything I needed to right from the start with a very short learning curve. Being an individual but with somewhat business-like printing needs, the overall cost-to-own on this Brother printer, its ease of use, and overall excellent functionality with outstanding features make this an excellent purchase.

This is the 3rd printer I have since I upgraded to MAC OS 10.7 LION. I had a HP 309 that worked fine with my MAC until I upgraded. Then I bought a KODAK multi-function printer that kept loosing connection with the network. Now I have this Brother MFCJ6910DW.

First the printer:

Machine is build very well. I love the 2 paper trays and the capability to print , scan and copy double sided 11" x 17". Physical setup was easy. I had the printer out of the box and the trays and cartridges installed in under 30 minutes.

Installing software was a different story. I''m a MAC user (LION 10.7). It took 2 installs and about 2 Hrs. to get the printer to "talk" wirelessly over my home network. Then I was able to print. But that''s it.

I called Bother Tech Support. They have a special group that addresses MAC problems. Unlike the regular phone support, they have limited operating hours. I think it''s 10:00 AM -8:00 PM EST. Once I got someone on the phone (Next day) a very nice and knowledgeable employee had the scanner function running in no-time. I can scan from the PC or directly from the printer to the PC. The text recognition is working as well. Installing it all was quite complex. I miss the days that you can plug just about any device into your Macintosh without having to load a driver.........................Hopefully Apple will come with a driver for this printer soon.

I appears to me that the "Scan to network" and "Scan to FTP" functions are not working for MAC LION 10.7. I have also not been able to make the scan to email function work with my Google account. I called the help desk again but the employee that (tried) to help me this time didn''t get me anywhere.

I have not used the FAX function at all.

The Brother website could use some improvement. It takes a while to find the correct documentation. Why not have a setup guide for each operating system???? One page that tells you step by step what to do........

Once I have some more "fun" with this machine I will update my review.

UPDATE:

Installed on my 2nd MAC OS 10.7. Went smooth this time. Here are the steps it took.

1) Do not use CD rom (yet)

I have used Canon paper and got this for price. It is not bright white and therefore loses out on the best glossy picture.

My estimate is that this is 88 whereas canon is 105.

HP''s Glossy Advanced Photo Paper meets my needs perfectly. Keep in mind, however, I''m no pro. I like taking good snapshots. But the weight is good, dry time excellent, sharpness perfect and all at a very affordable price. As a writer, I sometimes print my own bookmarks/promo materials on photo paper, making this paper even more economically useful for me.

Hewlett Packard Officejet 4620 Wireless Color Photo Printer

Hewlett Packard Officejet 4620 Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax
  • Professional color for a low cost per page, plus wireless printing
  • HP ePrint-print from virtually anywhere using your smartphone or tablet
  • 35-sheet automatic document feeder

I recently upgraded to this HP OfficeJet 4620 from a Dell A960. I KNOW, HUGE upgrade.

It took me about 30 minutes to set up, that includes getting it out of the box, putting it together, running the alignment test, and installing the drivers.

Setting up the ePrint was a breeze! They make it so easy for you and I''m most excited about that particular feature. Going to be very convenient since I am always on the go and use my phone for EVERYTHING (don''t we all?).

The complaint from the other reviewer that this printer is noisy I believe to be a fault in that particular printer... this printer is relatively quiet in my opinion but again I must mention that I previously owned an A960 so anything sounds like a whisper compared to that. I personally don''t see why the noise output is a factor at all. Getting nit-picky if you ask me.

The faxing speed is lightning fast. Scanning couldn''t be easier. It prints super fast, and the quality is top notch.

I''m personally very taken with how compact this printer is. It takes up very little desk space (about two stacks of paper in width).

This printer has SIGNIFICANTLY reduced the cost of ink. Very efficient printing, small footprint.

All in all, this little 4 in 1 is quite the powerhouse. I highly recommend it if you''re looking for a quality 4 in 1! I''d give it 10 stars if Amazon let me. :)

I switched from a Brother MFC J415W because it wasted too much ink with its unnecessary ink cartridge cleaning cycles (which could not be turned off) and the print quality wasn''t comparable to HP. Before that I had an HP Officejet 6500a Wireless which I considered a piece of trash because none of the drivers or software never worked properly and the machine froze up frequently. The HP Officejet 6500a was an upgrade from an HP Officejet 6310 which had wonderful print quality and never froze but had no wireless. This HP Officejet 4620 is comparable to the HP Officejet 6310 in most respects except that it is a bit more noisy (but not to the point of it being unbearable). This printer was really easy to set up and it has better execution of the Scan and Fax function (which can be set as the default faxing method) than the HP Officejet 6310, and it can be set up to turn on and off on a schedule in addition to its sleep mode. It doesn''t get five stars because it''s not perfect because of the noise but for faxing, scanning and occasional non-photo color printing, it seems pretty good so far. I don''t think I''d recommended as a primary printer for someone who prints a lot because of the cost of ink cartridges but as a fax, scanner and occasional printer, it''ll work.

Setup was easy, But printing is impossible for the fact that the paper is jammed even before you put paper in the printer. I am an IT pro and quite capable in operating printers and computers but this thing is impossible. I tried multiple weight papers it would not feed most times then again once it fed like 29 sheets at one time. I do not recommend this scanner. 2 hours messing with it and have not been able to make one copy or send one fax. Sending the piece of @%#! back.

I gave it 4 stars because I did not experience the problems the other reviewers had and the cheap paper catcher and the Image Capture do not bother me like it did some. I really like Lion so I wouldn''t go back to Snow Leopard or Tiger just to get the scan feature to work regularly.

This printer is meeting the expectations I have for my needs. I do not print photo quality photos on my HP officejet 4620. I use if for printing art lessons I create which include illustrations and pictures I have painted and photographed myself for teaching purposes. I also print personal finance records and word processing documents. I leave the photo printing to the $300,000 machines at my local CVS or Walgreens by uploading them and either having them mailed to me or pick-up myself. No worries about ink fading there.

After reading extensively on home printers using Apple''s Lion it seemed to be giving MANY some users trouble so this is what I did. I DID NOT use the installation disk. I downloaded the most recent drivers from HP directly and proceeded to install them and by following the SIMPLE prompts. I was able to install the wireless feature quickly and easily using the cord and my modem. I knew the username and password for my provider by calling them in advance of attempting an installation. I have not installed e print as I do not have and use for it at the time but may later. I expect it to be as simple as the wireless function. The ink seems to be lasting at an average rate. Since HP dumped the chip heads on the cartridges the ones for the HP Officejet 4620 are slightly more reasonable. I know to keep the internal heads working I will have to print something each week in both color and b and w. If a cartridge seems to fail early just pop it out and wipe the bottom gently with a water dampened rag to remove dried up ink.

The print quality is good for my needs and fast enough for me. It is slightly irritating to have to use Image Capture to scan a document to the desktop but entirely doable if you know your Mac. I fooled around with the print feature and finally got to the draft scan and grayscale to conserve color ink on un-importatant papers. Just go to the print feature, select type/quality; go to quality and select fast draft; mouse over color and select grayscale then black and white only. I got this printer for $88 because the box had been opened. My last HP was a Photosmart 4280 all in one that lasted 4 years then died. I expect this one to last as long also.

This printer isn''t perfect but its nowhere near as bad as some other review both here and on other sites have made it out to be. It took about 30 minutes to get it set up on the network, due in part to my slow optical drive taking awhile to install the software. As long as you follow the instructions in the book that comes with the printer and then on the computer when you install the software you should have no problems. I love the fact that it has E-print(email documents to your printer) so that if there is something I need to print when I am out I can email it to the printer and have it ready when I get home. It even sends me an email to the same address letting me know that the printing job has been completed. It also does have security features for the E-print so that it can be set up so that only certain email addresses can use it which is comforting. I know some people complained that the scanner was really loud but mine makes no noise whatsoever when it scans, I actually thought that it wasn''t scanning at all until I looked at my computer screen and saw the image on the screen fully scanned.

On the downside it is a bit noisy when it prints and makes some weird noise when it stops printing as well. It also sometimes manages to push the paper in the tray back so the point that it thinks that it is out of paper so you have to push the paper in the tray forward in order to get it to print. The good qualities outweigh the bad and make it a pretty good printer, especially for the price range.

All features worked with the exception of the #3 paper tray paper pick-up assembl,y when loaded with 11" X 17" paper. Every attempt to print 11 x 17 copies resulted in a "Paper Jam" message and the unit would shut down. I e-mailed PFC (seller) regarding the problem and they forwarded the e-mail to their tech support. The tech called with-in the hour and after running a number of tests the diagnosis was a failure of the paper pick-up assembly in the #3 paper tray unit.

PFC sent a replacement tray unit and upon installation, the issue was resolved.

I would recommend this seller; I was impressed with their methods and timely response of resolving warranty issues with their products.

This printer is great and worth 5 stars based on the printer''s abilities alone, seriously, but Brother is a apparently "very enthusiastic" about regularly (and frequently) replacing half-full toners with new Genuine Brother toners, to the tune of about $70-80 each. Yeah, right. I happily bought a refill kit which has worked fantastically in both volume and print quality. I''m not changing, nor am I wasting an extra $150-$200 every 2-3 months for my toners.

I''m writing this review because a Brother Customer Support Technician wouldn''t help me reset my toners. After hearing his lecture on Genuine Brother Toners and his adamant denial to help, I offered him an analogy. I simply asked if he went to a car dealership for "Genuine" oil, brakes, service, etc. EVERY TIME he had his car serviced. He of course had no answer after recognizing his own hypocrisy. So, to help others that may end up in my situation, here''s how to reset your toners.

If you have the starter cartridges, you will need to buy a refill kit of some sort, and a flag gear, or reset gear (see below for links). If that is done and you are still receiving the "Replace Toner" message, here''s what to do:

1Turn on printer

2Open front door to access toners

3Hit the "Start" button for the Black and White copies on the right side of control panel

4Quickly type in the number "10" on the numerical keypad (1 then 0, quickly in succession)

5You will see a toner menu. Simply pick you color(s) and capacities and reset as needed.

You can now refill your toners to a high capacity level for about $20 each, vs. $80 for "genuine brother" toners. Your cost per page probably dropped to about 3 cents each.

THANK YOU Brother Customer Support for motivating me to post this review.

All the best everyone!

ADDITIONAL INFO 2 MONTHS AFTER ORIGINAL POST:

Print quality on multiple types of paper is just as good as "Genuine Brother" starter toners. The photo print quality of this color laser printer is lacking, but that is true for most color laser printers.

I don''t have any affiliation whatsoever with any of the following companies/entities, but they posted the info I originally found, so, here''s some links to take you step-by-step.

You can get toner and a flag gear here:

OR, I''m sure if you type in "Brother TN-310 or TN-315 toner refill" into ebay or google you''d come up with some links, possibly cheaper, better, etc.

Here''s instructions on changing the toner and reset gear (AKA "flag gear"):

Instructions on changing the flag gear only:I have to say thanks to everyone who has rated this review as "helpful" on Amazon, it keeps it at the top of the listings and allows more printer purchasers to avoid getting taken for a ride on the Brother-Toner-Money-Train.

Buy Brother MFC-9970CDW Color Laser All-in-One Now

We previously had 4 laser printers that have lasted no more than a year or so each. After becoming very tired of buying the cheap throw-away units, we decided to replace our old copy machine with an All-In-One. After a bit of research, the MFC-9970 seemed to be be the best choice. Although it is quite large, we have never looked back. It has been the best machine any of us have ever used! Perfect touch screen, beautiful prints, fast, and it seems to do everything and everyone loves it! The only complaint I would have had (that''s resolved now), is that the toner didn''t seem to go very far before seeing the "toner is low, replace soon" message. We ran it until it refused to print another copy, and then replaced the toner. After following the instructions in the manual to a ''T'', we replaced the toner and closed the access door. After the first copy, we got the same message that the toner was low. After looking through the manual and every menu, it appeared there was no place to ''reset'' the message. So I called Brother and a helpful tech gave me the instructions below on how to reset the toner.

Step 1.) Open front cover to expose printer cartridges and press #1 on the number keys.

Step 2.) Scroll down to find and select the appropriate toner cartridge to reset:

K.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)

K.TNR-HC (High Capacity)

K.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)

C.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)

C.TNR-HC (High Capacity)

C.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)

M.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)

M.TNR-HC (High Capacity)

M.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)

Y.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)

Y.TNR-HC (High Capacity)

Y.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)

Now we can run our cartridges until they begin to line out before replacing them! The secret that Brother does not want you to know about. Hopefully this tip will also save others as much money as it has saved us.

I have two other Brother printers. One is an all-in-one inkjet and the other is a black and white laser printer. I''ve been happy with both of them and never had any problems. They did a fairly good job, but I wanted something a little better and thought a color laser printer would be the way to go.

This Brother MFC-9970CDW has good and bad points. First, the black printed letters are crisp and sharp. However, the color photos are only slightly above average in quality. Plus, there is some slight banding (lines) on solid prints. The banding is not too bad and hardly noticeable, but it should not do that. And I have tried everything the manual said to correct the problem, but nothing helped. Anyway, I can live with it.

The biggest complaint I have is the curling of the paper. Another reviewer is correct. The heavier weight the paper, the more severe the curling.

The speed for duplex printing is 6 pages in 1 minute and that is with plain text on one side and a map on the other side. Don''t get fooled by the claims of fast printing under everyday normal conditions. In contrast, the scanner is extremely fast.

The OCR software with plain text is very accurate. Hand written text is another story and problematic at best. But then, that is to be expected.

Wireless setup was easy. The printer recognized the network then I just had to install the driver on my PC.

This printer can pull through heavy stock paper and the duplex printing is a real time saver. Plus, overall the printer does a fairly good job. However, if paper curl bothers you, then stay away from this printer.

Update on the page curling.

I discovered a way to help undue the severe curling caused by this printer. First take all of your blank paper out of the tray. Then place your printed curled paper FACE UP in the feed tray. Don''t use more than about 50 pages at a time. And make sure the green sliding paper guide with 2 little hooks is in place on the end of the paper. This is necessary to hold the paper in place so the printer can pick up the sheets. Then launch a word processor. Tap the spacebar to fool the printer into thinking there is something to print. Set the number of pages to print, then tap print. After the paper runs through, the paper will curl in the other direction, but not as stiff. Take the paper in both hands and gently roll the curled ends back to straighten it. The result will be a nearly flat paper. Sounds like a lot of steps. But, try it and you''ll find it only takes a matter of seconds to correct that terrible paper curl.

I just received my Brother MFC-9970CDW a little under a week ago. So far, the print quality is significantly better than what I experienced with the Brother MFC-9840. It''s almost night and day with regard to color quality. I never liked the quality of the 9840, but the 9970 provides me with much greater color quality. They certainly made an improvement in this area.

The 9970 touch screen is nice to have also. It''s not a "Wow" factor for me, but it''s something different, but nothing to be desired.

The 9970 seems to be made with cheaper quality plastics, which seems to make the printer a bit more fragile, but we''ll see how it holds up...I''ve only had it for less than a week. But with that said, the 9970 also seems to be a bit more (and only a bit more) slim compared to the 9840.

My only problem thus far with the MFC-9970 is that the installation cd that came with the printer did not work properly on my Windows XP laptop. I had to go to Brother website and download the most recent installation drivers and software package. This delayed my setup of the printer a bit, because I had to restart at least two times before I realized I should just try the Brother website. Once I did, I didn''t have any other problems installing the printer drivers.

I can now use my printer for business presentations and not having to run to Staples or Kinkos because the 9840 color print jobs were too embarrassing to show any client. Glad I took another chance with Brother with the 9970 because I''ll finally get my money''s worth.

I haven''t really checked out the Control Center 4 that comes with this printer model, but hopefully they''ve made some improvements here too.

I''d recommend this printer to a small business looking for an all-in-one copy/print/scan/fax solution.

I purchased this printer almost six months ago for use in a small office environment of two people. It networked fine with both computers, although I used wired rather than wireless networking. I do not use it as a fax machine or scanner at the moment so I can''t really comment on those functions. It works relatively well as a copier. It has page-curl issues like most laser printers, and will occasionally wrinkle envelopes.

Like with most sub-thousand dollar printers, Brother makes most of its money selling toner, not the printer itself. I also have a Brother HL-5340D, and have been using a trick where I cover an eye on the toner with tape to extend the toner life to reasonable levels. On the 5340, my understanding is that a laser is used to measure toner level, hence why the tape works. I purchased the MFC-9970CDW thinking that the same trick would work, but I believe I am mistaken. I have been getting low toner warnings for the past month, and attempted the tape trick. Today, the printer gave a "replace toner" message and would not do anything until I replaced the black cartridge with a new one (which I had on hand). However, it is very obvious that there is still toner remaining in the original cartridge. I put it back in and it continues to print fine without any deterioration in print quality. I will be tracking how many more pages I get out of the original (starter) toner after it quit. It printed 2813 pages before the machine shut down and demanded that it be replaced. Based on other reviews I have read, people should also be aware that the machine will not print anything if ANY of the toner cartridges "need" to be replaced. So, there is no black and white printing if a color toner is bad.

Ross Kendalll''s earlier review discussed some toner related issues, and I would like to expand on it. First, from what I can tell, the only way to make the printer believe that a new cartridge has been installed is to insert a new cartridge with a reset "flag gear" on it. This is a little gear on the side of the cartridge, and starter cartridges come without that gear. Because I used my new cartridge to reset the printer and then put the old starter cartridge back in, I suspect that I will need to go in and reset the flag gear on the new cartridge in order for the printer to believe that it is new once I put it back in (when the old one actually does run out of toner). There are plenty of videos online about resetting this gear, and it is also possible to buy just the gears, usually as part of refill kits. I plan to purchase such a refill kit shortly, but have not yet tried to refill a cartridge or reset the flag gear on one.

Ross Kendalll''s review also discusses a method of getting into another menu if the printer does not recognize a new cartridge. Below are the instructions for getting to it:

1. Open the front panel door to the machine (as though you were going to replace a toner).

2. When the machine says to close the door, press the number "1" on the keypad. Note that this can only be done if the machine is saying to close the door. If the machine has shut down and is demanding that a toner cartridge be replaced, then I do not know of a way to access this menu.

The menu provides twelve reset options standard, high, and super-high capacity for each toner color. I went through and reset each one of them, but as best I can tell, this did NOT reset the page counters in the unit. More on this in a moment. This seems to be a method for getting the machine to recognize toners that it does not want to recognize.

There is also a "maintenance menu" for this printer. It can be accessed as follows:

1. Go to the "menu" option using the touch screen.

2. Press "* 2 8 6 4" (5 buttons)

This will bring up the maintenance menu. I note that I was not able to access this menu while the machine was demanding that I replace the toner cartridge. Only afterwards was I able to get to it. Pressing "7 7" in this menu will cause the machine to print a maintenance information page with a fair number of details on it that are otherwise not available to the standard user. Pressing "9 9" will exit the maintenance menu and go back to normal. There are other codes that can be used, and I have no clue what they do. The machine keeps an individual page count for each toner cartridge. This is how I found out that my original black cartridge caused the machine to quit after 2813 pages. This is why I also do not believe that resetting the cartridges as discussed above resets the page counts, because they showed up the same on this printout before and after I reset all of them.

I also note that I was motivated to write this after some frustrating contacts with Brother''s technical support. They absolutely refuse to provide any information that might jeopardize their toner rip-off scheme. The solution to most problems is to "replace with a genuine Brother cartridge." I asked very specific questions about how I might be able to access the menu first written about by Kendalll, (which I already knew about) and was stonewalled by both chat and phone support. I have personally resolved never to buy another genuine brother cartridge so as to not reward what is essentially fraudulent behavior.

I note that the attempt to rip people off on toner is not limited only to Brother. Buyer beware.

***UPDATE*** Pages finally started to print a bit lighter with the starter black cartridge after a total page count of 4258 and a monochrome page count of 3588. This means that AFTER the machine completely shut off because it claimed the black toner cartridge needed to be replaced, I was able to print an additional 1445 total pages (1050 additional monochrome pages) before the toner got low enough for me to notice a difference in print quality.
