HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax

Purchased this product a week ago. Install was simple and easy and worked wireless and USB just fine. Scan worked very well--quite fast either wireless or USB...HOWEVER...

A day or so later the communication between print and computer through new HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax network would stop and require computer reboot to re-enable. Obviously this was unacceptable so I called HP to get resolved. To date I have been on phone with them for over 12 hours! During their first attempt to repair they suggested an uninstall of printer and then reinstall. This process created a DLL error which they could not explain. I checked web and many other have had same issue after un-install of HP software. I fixed the problem by running CCLEANER and Glary Utilities which cleaned up all the left over mess that HP leaves after un-install.

To make matter worse the process rendered my other all-in-on printer HP 56000 useless. I went from a dependable 5600 and a less than ideal 6700 to not being able to print at all on either. The case was escalated to an "Case Manager" who spent more time telling me what they would not do than he did offering solution. He said the problem with my 5600 would not be supported because it was out of warranty--even though it worked fine before the new 6700 uninstall issue. Unbelievable!!

Next an "expert tech" call was scheduled where resolution was expected. Would you believe that there system was unable to connect to my computer and then their e-mail system was not allowing outbound emails to be sent so tech could not send work around link to connect. A tech company that can''t sent emails!

The tech went through another two hours of trying to make their software work and finally gave up and offered an upgraded model to be sent to me because he did not think the HP 6700 drivers would work--that there is an issue. His only other solutions was for me to reformat my hard drive and reinstall operating system and all program. Can you believe a software company can not fix there own software without having a user reformat computer and start from scratch. That is the most unreasonable suggestion I have ever heard!

To recap, the printer works, the software is a problem and the company should really consider learning what customer satisfaction means. It is no wonder they are considering "remaking themselves" and exiting the hardware space. They are failing in this area big time.

Over the course of the last 15-16 years, I have seen a *lot* of printers. It typically takes the geek in the family to setup a printer, be it a simple home printer connected to a single computer; or a network printer.

From what I have seen while setting up the 6700 printer it practically set itself up :) I installed the cartridges by looking at the on-board touch screen on the printer. Kept papers in the tray. From my computer, configured the printer to enable it wirelessly. And did the first job "scanning 15 pages through automatic feeder". In about 1-2 minutes, it scanned all the pages, collated all of the 15 page-scans into a single pdf and uploaded the pdf into my computer''s "My Documents" folder. *Never* have I seen such a task being done in such a seemless manner. Kudos to HP. Will definitely recommend it. [Note: I just started using the product, so take this reco with a pinch of salt].

Cheers.

Want HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One Wireless Color Photo Printer Discount?

I bought this HP Officejet 6700 about 3 weeks ago at Costco, and so far it''s doing a great job. I can print borderless copies and double sided copies to save 50% of paper. I printed a few pictures using photo paper and that also turned out great. I love printing wirelessly and this fits the bill perfectly. I also love printing from anywhere I happen to be, if I''m out and about and I need to print something, I just print it from my IOS device and it''s waiting for me when I get home. I LOVE THAT! I''m using a Mac Pro running Lion and a Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion. I also print from my IPad 3 and iPhone. I downloaded a couple of free HP printer apps from apple''s app store for my IPad 3 and iPhone like, HP ePRINT, and HP eSupplies, both work great. So far so good, if it goes down hill I will adjust my review accordingly. Thanks for reading.

***UPDATE*** July 25th 2012

This printer just got better! The FREE App which is called HP ePRINT from the Apple App store now let''s you print from anywhere, it has a drop down menu to show you places where you can print when your out and about and you need to make copies of something. I have a list of places in my area like FedEx Office, UPS, Hotels, and Walmart so you can go there and wirelessly make copies of what you need on the go. It also has a map of all the places so you know exactly where they are and their phone number. Great new features. AWESOME PRODUCT JUST GOT BETTER!

First, it jammed twice during the printer self-initialization, where it prints out the alignment paper. Plus, the self-initialization took about 15 minutes (or at least felt that long). Well, if the initialization and alignment takes that long, it must be an awesome, super precise piece of equipment.

The printer really wanted me to set up an ePrint account. I enabled ePrint, and then the printer offered to print out instructions for creating an account, and requires the printer''s secret passcode in order to link my account to the printer. I hit "OK," to print out the instructions, and it only prints half the page, cutting off the printer''s passcode. Went through the menus and figured out how to print out the instructions again, and still, only half a page. Whatever, I know where the passcode is by navigating the printer''s menus. So I set up an account on HP''s eprint web site. It said "Success! A confirmation email has been sent." I go to check, nothing. I wait 5 minutes, 10 minutes. Nothing in my spam folder or anything. Oh well, I try to log in and it says "403 forbidden". After a few times I figure maybe I made a mistake with my password. I tried "Forgot password." It asks for my email, and after I submit, again I get "403 Forbidden." I tried to create another account, but then it says, "Error, that email address is already taken."

12 hours later, I get an email in my inbox: "Thank you for registering with HP, blah blah blah." Followed by several emails saying, "Your request to update/reset your password blah blah blah."

Now on to the false advertising portion of the review:

The product description says, "scan documents to a PC or e-mail." In fact, it does not scan to email. It just doesn''t. The marketing guy must have not read the printer manual. Oops. Seriously, if you figure it out, please include a review showing how.

I tried to call tech support. The website says, "Tech support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for most products." Somewhat hopeful, I call, struggle through their voice recognition menu thing. "Printer... PRRIIIINNNNTTTTEERRRRR... Officejet... OFFFICCCEEEJEEEETTTT. OFFICEJET!!!!! Macintosh... MAAAACCCCCIIINNNNNNTTTTOOOOSSSHHHHH" and it politely says, "Please call back during business hours Monday through Friday." Oh well, I guess people on Macs using Officejets is such a rare situation that it doesn''t qualify for HP to have *someone* somewhere in the world that can answer questions. It really does require extra special training and there are so few experts in the world that HP can only afford to have them available during business hours M-F.

As noted by another reviewer, the marketing also claims, "Print borderless marketing materials and business-quality photos and print affordably with automatic two-sided printing." The catch is that it cannot do two-sided borderless printing. Wow. I didn''t know you''d have to be a lawyer to appreciate the nuances in the marking material.

The "embedded web server" is kind of cool, but kind of busted. Basically, the printer has its own web server that you can use to do configuration, fax, scanning, etc. I tried it, and got a pdf consisting of six blank pages. To double check that I didn''t do something dumb like put the paper in upside down, I scanned again, but using the "Scan to computer" function on the printer itself, and it worked. I didn''t have time to debug why it didn''t work with their web server interface.

Overall, not a good experience.

  • Customize with 2D barcodes or QR codes to quickly connect customers to your website and other digital media

  • Use the Pop-up Edge for fast peeling--just bend the patented Easy Peel label sheet to expose the label edge, peel, then fold the sheet back to flat in a jiffy

Normally I have some issues with office products with this high a price point, but the absolute quality of the 2"x2" stickers in this set almost ---almost!! ---falls into the "you get what you pay for" area of life. I love that these stickers call themselves squares, and they actually are squares. I don''t mind rounded edges when you know they are coming, but too often label stickers are identified as being "rectangular" when they are actually rounded. 80% of the time it makes little difference, but in certain packaging and labeling situations you really need clean lines to the edges. Sharp corners are important then. So, LOVE the sharp corners.

High marks for the fact you can use both laser and ink jet printers with little issue (tested on both, no smears or blurs). Kudos also for strong "stick-em" value. Really, nothing but good things to say. But that $$$$. You can get cheaper labels, but you will not get the same quality. If you are looking to save overhead, maybe you shouldn''t splurge here, but when your need to look you best, have that extra added edge (pun intended), having some of these on hand would be a wise decision.

Love the square labels perfect for printing logos or for making labels for gift bags and baskets, so much better looking than using just a standard address label.

With all of Avery products, quality is great and set-up to print is easy.

Highly recommend!

These labels are much smaller than your standard mailing labels. At a size of of 2x2 you can use these labels to personalize it to your liking. With the holidays upon us I would use them as a fun way to make labels for gifts. Also if you are having a dinner party or New Year''s Eve party you can make seating cards and add the special touch of the occasion you are celebrating. An image would be such a cool idea For Christmas add a tree, Holiday dinner a snowflake New Year''s eve, a champagne glass, streamers or even a balloon.

Another fun idea, for a children''s birthday party and all those goodie bags, make it extra special for a child by placing the label on their own bag.

When the holidays are over, these labels are the perfect size to label storage boxes with all your holiday decorations. The labels are so versatile, they can be used all year to label many items around the house or office.

For the simple quality of being square this label seems, automatically, more elegant.

The 2" x 2" size is perfect for printing an attractive label that includes an ornament (or logo) and a few lines of text in a comfortable-sized font. I see that there is a slightly smaller size, but I''m very happy with this particular size and format.

Note that the labels are square, with square not rounded corners. Rounded corners would have been nice, too. They are white but, since they print edge-to-edge you could color them. They do take ink well and dry fast. You can start applying them almost as soon as they come out of the printer.

I was on the committee for an alumni dinner gala at my son''s old school. We used it on the clear party favor bags we had for the ladies to take home after the gala dinner. We were able to print the school logo (which is a long coat-of-arms type design) plus 2 lines of 24 point text in the school colors and still allow for an uncrowded placement. The same label was used in some shopping bags that contained prizes and they "dressed up" the wrapping very well. We also used it on the displays at the silent auction tables to indicate the name of the donor and the starting bid. Someone suggested that it could have been used as name tags for the people in charge of the auction and raffle tickets.

Since we wanted to print in color, we used the inkjet printers, but I notice that they could have been run in a laser printer as well, which is good to know.

I love the size and shape. I love that they are easy to remove from the backing, that the adhesive works well, that the corners lie flat, and that they feed into the printer smoothly and without jamming.

My only wish is that they were slightly glossy (or less flat). A little gloss effect would have made them just a little more dressy and they would have soaked up less ink. (And taken longer to dry, I realize).

However, this little objection isn''t going to keep me from getting them again next time; it isn''t going to keep the school from stocking them for other events; and it isn''t going to keep me from using the remainders to make my own custom Christmas gift tags this year.

Avery is certainly the source for a plethora of labels. This one is a favorite. As a retailer, I like a label that is big enough to put both logos and product information on that won''t curl...this one fits the bill. The print doesn''t smear or fade and the label stays put! This size is so versatile too from address labels to product descriptions on a myriad of items. The quantity is generous too so buy a pack and even with heavy use you will have labels at hand. As you can tell I really like this label and I recommend it for anyone needing a slightly larger label with permanent adhesive.

I have used this product for many years to do transfers using hand sanitizer (alcohol based products). It worked wonderfully. The product has recently changed and the results are more than unsatisfactory. Just wanted to let people know that if you plan to use this for transfers the results are not what they use to be. If anyone knows of another brand that works well for transfers please let me know. I have tried many and this was, by far, the best.

This product also just does not produce as good of quality inkjet transparencies as it use to. They just don''t hold the ink the way they use to. They are very faded. Even on glossy photo printing settings the images are banded and off color. I have also had problems with curling. Several boxes that I have received of this product were so curly it would not feed through the printer correctly.

Xyron XRN250-CFT Create-a-Sticker 2.5-inch Sticker Maker Save 23% off

Xyron XRN250-CFT Create-a-Sticker 2.5-inch Sticker Maker with Permanent-Adhesive CartridgeThis product is amazing, and it''s bigger than you think it is. Turns smoothly, with no wrinkles or bubbles in the final product. It''s perfect for velum or fiberous thin papers, which are always difficult to attach, (because glue shows through horribly.) I would have gladly paid twice as much for this product now that I''ve tried it. (If you''re planning on making stickers out of regular cardstock to paper though, you might as well just use glue. If you''re working with slightly see-through or plastic papers however, this is the perfect product for you.)

As a typical crafter/scrapbooker, I have lots of gadgets and inventory. " Who needs another expensive toy?", I thought. There just isn''t time or room for every new thing on the market and so much of it is just fluff.

I LOVE THIS THING!!!!!!

1. The adhesive comes in permanent or temporary..... girls love choices

2. The adhesive is dry..no more sticky fingers or wet glue running around the corners of your scrap-book embellishments...this thing lays the exact amount of adhesive right to the edges so there is no curls. And if it does go over a little, just a tiny rub of your finger will clear it up!! (no more smudges!!)

3. Works great with vellum and other specialty papers.

4. I have been cutting out sayings and pictures from printed scrap-book paper. After running through the xyron, I placed on card-stock, cut around the edges, and ran the whole thing through again!! My pages look professional, neat and clean with crisp edges that all lay down.

5. Dry adhesive means no more waiting for your pages to dry before embellishing them further, or putting them into albums.

I definately recommend a Xyron adhesive runner for any crafter, but especially scrapbookers. Be prepared. It is bigger than it looks. And it may set your heart wandering for the other Xyron products! It has mine!!

I''m sure you will love it too!!

You can put actual photos through it which has been handy for doing her VIP board for school, etc. The possibilities are endless. WE LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!

I purchased this for my five-year-old daughter instead of buying one of the kids'' version of it. It is so simple and easy to use that an unsupervised five-year-old can work it. The sticker material is not inexpensive, but the machine is efficient at how it uses it. With a little bit of tutoring my daughter knows how to conserve the tape and make it last a while. She makes cards and decorates artwork with it. I definitely recommend the repositionable adhesive for kids.

Want Xyron XRN250-CFT Create-a-Sticker 2.5-inch Sticker Maker Discount?

Let me start by saying that I am not into scrapbooking and I don''t consider myself to be very creative. However, I have a five year old son who absolutely LOVES to do crafts. I picked up this sticker maker on Amazon at a great price and it is so incredibly easy to use. I am so impressed by how well the finished product sticks to the page!! Even cutouts from magazines stick perfectly! My son and I printed some photos off our computer, cut them down to size, and made a bunch of stickers. My son them placed the stickers onto a card for his older brother who just joined the air force. My son basically made the stickers himself, but I just stuck around to supervise. I don''t think the rolls are going to last very long, so we are going to have to buy some replacements, but they will be well worth it! Thank you Xyron for making a simple and effective product that even the creatively challenged can use with ease!! I highly recommend this over the toy versions I have researched!! Durable and useful!

Avery Two-Side Printable Clean Edge Business Cards (08876) Save 24% off

Avery Two-Side Printable Clean Edge Business Cards for Inkjet Printers, Matte, Ivory, Pack of 200
  • Clean, smooth edges for a professional presentation
  • Two-sided printing provides greater surface area to give your clients key information
  • Extra-sturdy, matte-coated cards feel substantial in your hand
  • Convenient do-it-yourself cards mean that you can make changes to your design as often as you like
  • Design and print from your desktop in minutes

You expect Avery products to be outstanding and this is no exception. I have generally used their Avery''s Laser cards and was reluctant to use the InkJet cards because of previous problems with a competitor''s product, specifically, a film coating and poor seperation of the cards. Neither was a problem with the Avery cards!

I now have color cards, print quality is great even with photograpic images. Seperating the card is quick, easy and the result is outstanding if not perfect.

Buy Avery Two-Side Printable Clean Edge Business Cards (08876) Now

These worked out very well for me when I decided to create personalized business cards. The paper is stiff like what business card should feel like (unlike some card stock at Michael''s craft store that I tried using), a concern I had before purchasing this Avery product. The Ivory color is very subtle, something hard to detect without comparing a bright white piece of paper next to it. And the printing results from my Canon Inkjet printer on high quality setting were outstanding (no bleed through showing on the other side of the card).

When punching out the cards, it was quick and easy (directions are printed on the unused border of the paper for your convenience) by just folding inwards along each edge of the card. I understand a little how they accomplished such clean edges, which I can explain later on. But I was pleased with the end result clean edges with no fray strands and all the cards were perfectly the same shape. One caveat with this type of clean edge solution is that you must use a printer that "feeds" in paper from the rear tray. Most printer have the front loading tray (or both) but loading from the front will bend the Avery paper in a "U" shape, causing your cards to bend and mostl likely the clean edges to "punch out" inadvertently inside your printer. I highly recommend loading only from the rear tray (or top loader) since its mostly a pass-through design.

I designed my business cards with the help of Avery''s online tool at avery, com[slash]templates. For this product you can enter 8876 to get a template that you can customize online (even save it to their website after registering) and download the finished design as a pdf file for you to print it at home directly on these sheets. I know MS Word 2010 also has built-in templates just for Avery products (and so does MS Publisher 2010), but the online tool was easy and robust for my needs. Avery has a FREE downloaded program that you can also use, and downloadable templates for other products such as Adobe Photoshop. If you can''t find a 8876 template, 8871 is the same size and will work too.

Hope all this info helps. I had a good experience with this product and will probably choose this solution over other options (I was considering online orders from Shutterfly, com). Just be careful how it is loaded into your printer and it should be successful.

.

PS. As opposed to the micro-perforated version, this one has actual "cut lines" across all the edges of the business cards to create the clean edge. I say in quotations because the cut doesn''t actually go all the way through the thickness of the paper. The "cut" is entered from one side, and is just enough that you can "snap/break" the cut similar to breaking a graham cracker in half. Only thing is that it can only snap/break from one side, but it works perfectly.

This is a good product; however, for some bizarre reason Avery only offer Ivory in quantities of 200. It is far more economical to purchase 400 or even 1000 cards at a time. The exact same style of card in White is available in 200, 400, 1000 and even boxes of 2000. What''s up with this? Ivory is now as popular as White. It was frustrating searching for the product in vain. I finally called Avery (whose call center is in the Philippines) and was told Ivory only comes in one size. I hope Avery reads comments and gets the message! I encourage others to request this product in larger quantities, as well.

Epson 8.5 x 11'' Hot Press Bright Smooth Matte Paper
  • 25 x Sheets

This is a superb paper for both color and monochrome inkjet printing, but because I generally prefer a lustre or glossy surface for my color work, I will discuss this paper only in connection with black & white printing, for which Hot Press Bright has become my "go to" paper. Hot press bright has an extremely smooth, bright white matte surface exhibiting very rich, deep blacks, excellent sharpness, and a long, smooth tonal scale. Unlike other matte papers I have tried I find that Hot Press Bright exhibits minimum curl and loads relatively easily into the rear manual paper feed with a minimum of jamming. The paper''s weight is substantial without being overly heavy. I find that Hot Press Bright is a perfect fit for my personal photography which primarily consists of landscapes, interiors and graphics with an emphasis on line, form, and spatial relationships. Photographers whose work focuses on people may prefer a slightly warmer paper such as Hot Press Natural. Because inkjet print quality is so closely tied to the printer, profile, ink, and paper combination in use, as well as the accuracy of monitor calibration, I can only vouch for my own system setup which consists of a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard, an Eizo Monitor utilizing the manufacturer''s calibration software in conjunction with a Spyder2 Colorimeter, an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 printer utilizing Epson Ultrachrome K3 inkset, and Epson''s built in Advanced Black & White print mode. In short I don''t think you can go wrong with this very excellent paper from Epson.

I think foremost of importance is how does the print quality look. I have 2 other printers to compare the prints with. One is a full size HP D7560 and the other is a Epson PictureMate Dash. I printed the same test picture right from a memory card on each. Comparing the three both HP''s look better than the Epson. The HPs were sharper and more colorful than the Epson. Comparing the HPs to each other I''d say the D7560 wins but not by a lot. The 646 picture had more color saturation and the D7560 had less color saturation and a little bit more detail making it look more natural. Between 646 and PictureMate I am going to keep the 646 and sell the PictureMate. The pics aren''t perfect with the color saturation but they are good.

I know I could probably tweak the color on the PC of what I send to the Picturemate and make them match but I''m not all about doing that. The Picturemate did print a little bit faster but both are fast enough that it doesn''t really matter. The 646 can do 5x7 and the PictureMate can''t. Another plus the 646 has over the Picturemate is print head is in the ink cartridge. The Picturemate has built in heads that if you don''t print for a while will clog up. At least with the HP if that happens and it can''t be unclogged a new cartridge will fix it whereas the Picturemate would probably be shot.

The 646 has built-in Bluetooth which worked well with my Blackberry Tour. The touch screen seems to work well. When you turn on the printer for the first time it will walk you through setup right on the screen which is nice. Interacting through the screen with the printer seems to work well and is nice. You can do all kinds of editing and card making right on the printer if that is what you want to do. That is not my cup of tea but I saw the wife playing with it and she said she liked it and would use it to make quick cards for different things.

My printer came with a quick instructions, padded carry case, power adapter, ink cartridge, some paper, and a stylus. What they did with the padded carry case is pretty cool. It is what the printer comes in. They wrap a cardboard sleeve around it and fasten the zipper together for in the store. Less waste is nice.

There were no software discs. The printer has software built into it for 32-bit Vista and XP. Oh it has MAC OS 10.4 and 10.5 software on it too but I know nobody cares about that. ;-) None of the built in software did me any good as I run 64-bit Vista and Windows 7 RC. I went to the HP website and got the 64-bit Vista drivers to install in Windows 7 and it works fine.

So overall I liked this enough to ditch the PictureMate and although its not perfect print wise I would say if you are looking for a compact 4x6 or 5x7 photo printer with Bluetooth this one should work well enough for what it is.

Buy HP Photosmart A646 Compact Photo Printer (CC001A#B1H) Now

I am a photographer so finding a compact printer to take with me is something I need to have at hand. I have the Canon Selphy 510 which takes the ink ribbon and the postcard paper (4x6).

I told myself I would never buy an HP printer since they were never that great. I took the chance and got this one since I had a gift card and figured it was worth investing in it. I wanted a compact printer that prints up to 5x7 and HP was the only one available that did that. When I first printed from it, I didn''t like the way the colors printed. It felt like they bled in too much and there was no separation on the colors. However I was printing from my camera to the printer via usb pictbridge. So I did the one thing I should have done in the first place. I went to the colorspace on the printer screen and changed the colorspace to Adobe RGB. The colorspace on my camera was Adobe RGB and when 2 different colorspaces are set you are bond to get colors that don''t look good or match what you see on your screen. So by changing the colorspace on the printer (its automatically set to auto) I was able to solve my color problem. Mostly all cameras are set on Adobe RGB. To change the colorspace on your printer go to the wrench icon, next go to PREFERENCES, scroll down until you get to colorspace and select Adobe RGB.

Your images should now print much much better and closer to what you see on your screen. Mine came out even better after changing the colorspace.

Also I have read the other reviews the bad ones too and realize that many people don''t seem to do enough research on the printer before they even buy it. I haven''t tried the bluetooth yet and wouldn''t bother since phone cameras are not so great in the first place and you can''t expect the printer to print high quality images from a phone. Its rather annoying when people complain that their phone pictures didn''t come out great like the printer would magically fix the crappy camera phone quality. PLEASE!! If you want to print pictures from your phone I recommend the Polaroid PoGo printer for $50 you can get prints at 2x3 which is wallet size and it does print okay. Not 100% excellent but good enough to make you happy to have that little printer.

I love the fact that it takes larger than 4x6 paper, the touch screen rocks and the fact that it came with its own bag is sweet.

Also I recommend buying the ink by itself and getting the paper on sale. People don''t seem to realize that they can get the paper on sale for much cheaper than what it costs. I bought a box of 5x7 50 pack for less than $8 and a box of 4x6 for under $10. If you buy things for less you do save more on ink and prints.

The only cons I have with this printer is that it does print a bit slower than I would like for a 5x7. However the print quality is set to best so I would believe that is why it prints slow. If it was set to normal or even fast normal I''m sure the speed would be much faster. I also don''t like the fact that it doesn''t take compact flash cards but it does accept pictbridge.

All in all I was glad that I like the printer. Also I am still using the ink that came with it. I have already printed 5 5x7 size prints and still have ink to spare, although I am sure I will run out quickly since I am printing larger sizes. It says it can print up to 15 4x6s on the ink that came with it which everyone should know is how all printers are. I also think that they based it on normal printing not BEST printing quality.

*Read the whole specifications about the printer before you buy so you know what it is saying. I hear too many people complaining how the printer doesn''t have this or that, well you should have read what it comes with before you buy it! Its called research. That''s why I got this because I liked what it said and was worth a shot buying.

The short: small, fast, minimalist, producing great looking prints.

The whole package is minimalist, compact, and designed to be simple to use: The printer arrives packaged eco-friendly in a reusable tote (made from recycled materials) that''s actually nice enough to reuse. There''s no driver CD, and minimal setup directions. The ink cartridge is all-in-one. The printer needs only an inch or so clearance behind, and a few inches in front (for the paper guide and output). There''s a tuck-away stylus to interact with the touch screen, and a fold-down carry handle.

On powerup, the printer displays a simplified version of the paper quick setup directions, and instructs the user to print a calibration page.

When attached via USB to my WindowsXP system, the printer has an unusual design in which is appears to Windows as a CD drive, from which I did the typical driver installation, after which Windows saw the unit as a printer, not a CD drive. Unfortunately, this base Windows software installation didn''t seem to offer an interface to the custom modes available from the touchscreen (eg: passport photo, greeting card, etc).

I''ve owned other photo printers, including Canon''s small dye-sub printer: Canon SELPHY CP510 Compact Photo Printer , and this HP beats all of them in speed, print quality, and color reproduction. For color, primary colors are rich and vibrant, though neutrals (such as earth-tones) and pastels are slightly washed out. Blacks are solid and jet-black. I tested some complicated, textured, outdoor scenes and was very pleased with the results (one sample was a mix of sky, desert dust-storm, and people). The same complicated print took 1m43s at "best" and 43s at "fast normal". Interestingly, the quality difference between the two prints was modest. The "best" print was a little more rich and nuanced in detail, but at 5x7, "fast" seems adequate for most things I''d print.

I tried a couple of the speciality modes, and the printer did "the right thing" in printing passport photos, correctly scaling and sizing them (no more figuring out the DPI to resolution ration to get the exact 2x2 required for passports!). Greeting cards came out well also, though the small number of available designs are limiting.

While I like the printer a lot, I did have some quibbles:

* The inbuilt initial setup is a bit simplistic, and led me to at first not taking the tape off the contacts of my print cartridge (I don''t usually use inkjet printers so didn''t realize). Interrupting the setup before it was finished resulted in having to go through the setup process again. There''s such a thing as "too simplified".

* To use the touchscreen-based modes on the printer I had to put the images on a memory card (presumably a bluetooth-enabled phone would have worked too). I realize many people leave their old photos "on their cameras", but I take a lot of photos, and all my archiving and sorting is done on computers, so the on-card-only design makes the custom modes much less useful to me.

* It would be nice to be able to create custom greeting card designs.

* For some reason the sticky protective cover on my model''s LCD wouldn''t come off without a lot of prodding and scraping, leaving a mar on the touchscreen. The screen itself has a non-obvious locking mechanism in its popped-up position that has to be pressed in the opposite direction from what I expected. I could see the screen getting broken in a multi-user household

My prints were all on HP "Advanced Photo Paper". Most vendors formulate their inks to match their paper, so the combination typically yields the best results.

Aside from the minor quibbles, I''m very pleased with this photo printer. Highly recommended.

This is a very compact machine and fairly simple to use. It produces crisp and clean prints with good detail. Landscapes come out best. With portraits, the colors get funny and one needs to experiment with different manufacturers'' paper, and the "Photo fix" and "Colorspace" settings under "Preferences". As the other reviewer mentioned, there is no black ink cartridge so the print colors are compromised and, often, inaccurate. I see this as a printer to use if one doesn''t own a computer or to take to a party and print photos on the spot to give to friends. The limitation on this latter use is the slowness of the machine. Prints take 1&1/2 minutes and imputs such as editing and scrolling are also slow. Print sizes are limited to 4"X6" and 5"X7" (and panoramic 4"X12").

The printer did not do a good job of finding and correcting red-eye and pet-eye (a feature I liked because I take a lot of pet photos). It was hit and miss. Also, while I didn''t try all the special effects, I found problems with those that I did use. I could not get the machine to print a border on an edited picture. Despite showing the preview of the border on the edited photo, the actual print would be a border on the unedited photo.

I do not know how long an ink cartridge lasts, the sample provided is not a full cartridge. Cartridges are about twenty dollars.

It does not take all sizes of memory cards but can print from a Pictbridge certified camera (whatever that is). So check to see that your card is compatible.

As with all electronic products, currently, at least in my experience, there is no full owner''s manual provided, only a "Start Here" guide. One has to download the full manual from HP''s website, so now I have an unbound stack of 47 8&1/2"X11" pages. I think this is an unbelievably cheap practice.

To make prints at home of casual snapshots, this does an adequate job, especially if one doesn''t have a computer or printer.

I''ve enjoyed this printer tremendously; in fact, I''ve traveled with it by car on two long distance trips. My grandmothers were absolutely thrilled to be presented with 4x6 and 5x7 photos immediately after having their pictures taken with their great-grandson. The quality of the photos printed on the HP A646 is equal to the photos printed on my two Canon printers (MP620 and MP830). I set the A646 up on my grandmother''s nursing home bed, inserted the camera card, and printed photos that she was able to keep within minutes. At my other grandmother''s, a kitchen countertop did the trick. When my in-laws came to visit us, I set the printer up outside on a small plastic deck table (near an outside power outlet) and printed family photos. The heat and humidity were high, but I was able to print about ten photos before experiencing any noticeable problems (the edge of the last printed photo appeared warped, as if the humidity impacted the paper or the ink).

Pros:

#1 Excellent quality prints, equal to CVS'' Kodak machines and the Canon MP620 and MP830.

# 2 Lightweight and easily portable. Easy set-up allowed me to quickly print at a nursing home, in a kitchen and on a (covered) front porch in inclement weather.

# 3 Attractive carry-pouch holds wall plug, plenty of 4x6 and 5x7 camera paper, and a full size extra ink cartridge.

Negatives:

#1 No batteries. To be truly portable, you should be able to use batteries to power the A646. You cannot take this printer to the beach or a park unless you use a converter and hook it up in your vehicle.

#2 The printing time is slow each 4x6 print takes 1 minute, 30 seconds to print. This is too long if you plan to print your entire vacation from a camera card, but its fine for traveling to the houses of family/friends and printing a few shots.

#3 Not all functions are intuitive. Why does the "pet eye fix" pop up on the main menu, but not "human red eye"? The user guide (only available online at HP) is about 100 pages in length. On page 46, it says: "to remove red eye: (1) touch the Setup icon to display Setup menu; (2) touch Preferences, (3) touch Red Eye Removal; (4) touch On to remove red eye from all prints. Touch Off to undo."

Still, I recommend the HP A646. Photo quality is excellent. I am enjoying the printer, and I use it far more than my other printers because it''s fun to take to events and print off photos for friends and family.

Inkpress PCL111420 Commercial Luster Inkjet Paper

Inkpress PCL111420 Commercial Luster Inkjet Paper 11in. X 14in. 20 SheetsI came across this paper in a search for a size larger than 8 1/2 x 11".

Having an Epson printer, I first tried to find an Epson paper with

the finish I wanted in 11 x 14" format. No luck. I encountered the

same problem looking for Harman paper.

Finally I came across the Inkpress Luster paper, hoping there would

be a profile available for my Epson printer. Fortunately, there was.

Since I don''t do much printing, I ordered 20 sheets. If it didn''t work

out, I could always give the paper away.

Using the Inkpress profile and the Qimage printing software from ddisoftware,

I hit the "print" button and crossed my fingers. After all, an 11 x 14" print

will use a lot of ink.

I was rewarded with a high quality print, nearly as good as I''ve received from

a print lab. Since it''s hard to get these by chance, I conclude that Inkpress

carefully tested their profile before making it available for download. This,

of course, is what we want to see from a reputable manufacturer and what

would generate repeat purchases.

I printed several black & white prints with this. Although I was expecting a more glossy paper, I was still quite happy with the results.

I printed with a Canon PixmaPro 9500 mkII. I visited Inkpress'' website to download the correct ICC profile, but there was a statement to use Canon''s built-in profiles. I followed their instructions & sure enough, the results were spot on.

The one caveat is make sure your printer recognizes the 11x14 size. This problem took me by surprise, but was able to work around it (I selected "plain paper", which then allowed me to select "custom size", "11x14" of course, then changed the paper type back to the correct paper). This is prob not a problem on most printers, but it happened with this particular printer. Wanted to share in case it happens to anyone else.

The only reason I didn''t give it 5 stars is how it compares to the paper I regularly use (Hahnemuhle Museum Etching paper). Sorry, had to reserve a star. Unfortunately they do not make a paper that suited my needs for this project. Fortunately it allowed me the opportunity to discover Inkpress.

Moab Lasal Photo Matte, Double Sided, Bright White Archival Inkjet Paper, 235gsm, 5x7'', 50 SheetsWe used this photo paper for this years''s "Pet Pictures with Santa". We use this event to benefit the Pulaski County Humane Society. The photographer requested matte paper rather than gloss and she was very pleased with hte results that she got with the Moab Matte paper. A plus is that it is two sided, so it doesn''t matter how it is loaded into the printer.

Good product. Photos printed on this paper look much more like a professional print. Epson papers have also always been good for me, but I haven''t found Satin Finish pre-cut papers from Epson in the size and price I desire.
