My employer here in San Francisco (I''m not in Kentucky like is says above) purchased one of these scanners to help us go paperless in the office. We have tons of paper documents that need to be scanned and archived. However, using this scanner has been one headache after another. Yes, it is fast, but it also jams often, and often grabs more than one page at at time(if this doesn''t cause it to jam then it simply means pages end up missing in the scan). The worst part is that after a jamming episode it simply won''t interface with Adobe Acrobat again unless it is shut down and rebooted. This happens A LOT. Sometimes it stops interfacing even without jamming. It''s not unusual to have to reboot the scanner several times an hour. I''m not sure if it''s a hardware or software issue, all I know is that it has been a pain in the neck for months. And of course, HP customer service is notoriously bad so that only makes a bad situation worse. We''ve barely had this scanner 6 months and have already decided to replace it. We recently ordered a Fujitsu FI-5120C and I have high hopes, based on its reviews, that my scanning headaches are over. As for this HP, what an expensive mistake it was. Also, btw, it makes a very annoying high pitched sound while scanning that made scanning very unpleasant.

I have now been using this printer/scanner for over two weeks. This replaces an old HP multifunction device which had problems with my Mac when printing over the network.

I work from home and have several computers running, Vista, XP and OSX and wanted them to share a printer/scanner. I must admit the driver setup is not the cleanest, and I needed to download versions newer than on the supplied disk to enable printing from 64bit applications on the mac. The only setup I got stuck on was that it is not clear that you need to have the printer connected by USB to create the initial connection to a secure wi-fi network.

Now that its up an running it works a dream enabling me to print and scan from any computer anywhere in the house. The scanning is decent (I don''t have a huge quality need, but I can''t complain about anything I''ve scanned), the printing is stunning. Colors are accurate for photos and the double sided printing is a great paper saver for general printing.

The only things which I feel could improve this device, for my purposes, are a document feeder for bulk scanning and a built in fax capability.

Before I had this printer I purchased a Kodak All-in-one. The one that advertises lab quality prints at half the price. It worked really well the first month of having it. After that I have never been more frustrated with an electronic device. It''s main issues were a design flaw in the print head, noisy operation, inks didn''t last very long, paper feed problems, bad software, and it wouldn''t let me print photos on anything other than kodak paper. So after replacing the print head three times I called it quits and decided I wanted something I could count on. Enter the Canon MP980. This printer was twice as expensive as the kodak, but worth every penny. The prints are AMAZING, and 4x6 Photos print faster than any printer I''ve ever used. There is also a dedicated Gray Ink cartridge allowing for true gray scale/Black & White photo prints. Printing is completely effortless. Everything just works. Setup was a breeze. I can replace each ink individually (not that I''ve had to yet). It has all the basic features like multi flash memory card reader, pic bridge, separate try for regular paper and photo paper, double sided printing and then some advanced features. Such as "quiet" mode. Optional blue-tooth, and built in Wi-Fi. BIG LCD. Connecting wirelessly is made easy. The scanner is fully functional and in addition to doing all the basics, it will do film and negatives as well. It also features LED''s so there is no "warm up" time. Although a message will show up saying to stand by for the scanner to warm up but it''s only for about 1 second. Things I thought are a nice touch. The standard paper tray slides inside the printer. When in a Standby mode, all the trays and openings to the printer are closed. When you execute a print, the door where the paper exits, opens automatically. There is no worry of things inside the printer getting dusty. The software bundled with the printer is really nice, straight forward, and works well. So far, no problems. I couldn''t be happier with this amazing machine.

Of course nothing is perfect. I thought it might be neat to print directly on DVD''s like some other printers do, not with this one. It''s largest borderless photo print is only 8.5" x 11". When turned on for the first time of the day, it goes through a priming routine where it gets the ink tanks and print head ready (I''m assuming). The process could take up to a minute. My biggest gripe is that the photo paper try loads from the rear. When you want to print from specialty paper you have to pull open the tray. It doesn''t store paper inside like the standard paper tray. So when you want to print photos, you have to open the tray and load it with whatever specialty paper you''re using. The tray pulls out in a virtical position so you can still position the printer up against a wall if you''re limited on space. When finished, you then unload the specialty paper and slide the tray back inside the printer. You could leave it out and loaded, but then you risk getting dust on your specialty paper unless you have a printer cover.

I highly recommend this printer. It''s well refined and quality is top notch.

Why 1 star you may ask.

I''ve come to expect a lot from Canon I own several of their cameras; I have one of their older photo printers (paid $45) on my boat that works flawlessly, so when I purchased their top-of-the line consumer printer, I expected one heck of a printer.

While the photo printing quality wasn''t bad, it wasn''t any better than my $45 printer. As a matter of fact, I was seeing some funky stuff showing up in the very dark sections of my photos. No, resolution is not the issue I''ve had these same images printed professionally at almost twice the size.

However, what really got me was the copy function.

The scanning works fine and captures everything, but not the copies.

The copies cut off the left and bottom 1/4 inch of the original document.

I called Canon Technical Support and was told that it''s a known issue!

I didn''t see that little tidbit of information in their specs did you?

I''m sorry, but in my opinion, it is totally unacceptable for Canon to sell the PIXMA MP980 as a photo All-In-One with no fax and a less than perfect copier.

This printer does everything I wanted it to do, and does it well in excess of my expectations. Plain paper printing is excellent, and the photo prints are simply gorgeous. I cannot tell the difference between this printer''s photo output and store-bought prints. Furthermore, the memory card, wireless functionality, and the built-in display work great. The UI is intuitive and works well for printing photos directly from a camera''s memory card. The card also appears as a disk drive on networked Windows machines, making for easy transfer of photos and video clips to fixed storage (a Windows PC or NAS box, for example).

On the other hand, the software installation process is a complete dog. It takes almost 20 minutes (!) to complete. This is not at all pleasant and it''s not intuitive. I found it to be the same level of hassle on Windows XP and Mac OS X platforms. The process has a few pitfalls as well as taking a long time. It''s not worth going into the details (some other reviewers have), but you should be aware of it before going into the project. Furthermore, there was a gap of nearly two months from when Apple released OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) before updated drivers were available for it from Canon, which was inconvenient and difficult to understand.

It''s a shame I have to rate the product at 4 (revised to 3 one year later--see below) stars when it''s really an outstanding multifunction device, but the software is inseparable from the product at the end of the day.

Updated one year later: Everything I related above remains true; however, it''s become evident that this printer is remarkably--astonishingly--expensive to own. It has been completely reliable and the print quality is still great, but the ink cartridges, which the printer eats with a ferocious appetite, are very expensive and inconveniently small. Without tallying receipts, I estimate that this printer has cost me fully what I paid for it (which was basically full retail because it was brand new when I purchased it from Amazon) in the cost of Canon ink cartridges. I shy away from off-brand or generic cartridges because of print quality and reliability problems I''ve experienced in the past with other printers, but I do bargain-shop for cartridges. For context, this printer serves a family of four (two of whom rarely print anything) and only normal, household printing needs such as school reports, coupons, etc--we print photos only a few times a year. I''m not looking to replace it yet but my next printer purchase will be at least 50% based on cost to operate.

I wanted an all in one printer that worked wirelessly and this printer seemed like my best bet after reading all the reviews. I have used the printer for almost two weeks now on a Windows XP system and on a Vista system running 64 bits. Here is my evaluation so far. I will list pros and cons up front for those that don''t want to read my whole review.

Setup:

Very bad experience for me. I took the printer out of the box and tried to decipher the instructions so that I could print wirelessly using Windows XP. I knew in advance this would be an issue from prior reviews but figured as an experienced computer user I should be ok. Not so. You HAVE to install the software first on your computer before ever hooking the printer to it. You also must start using a USB cable and be sure to enable the wireless feature in the printer using the menu system on the printer itself. Turn the printer off and then hook it up to your computer. The configuration utility will then allow you to set the computer up for first time use on a wireless LAN. Enter your WEP keys if needed. You MAY have to create a port for using the printer wirelessly. It is not entirely clear in the documentation but that caused some grief. After you have configured the printer for wireless use then detach it from the computer and turn it off and on again. It should come up as a printer you discover wirelessly your computer. Once you can attach to it you should have no problems.

Printing:

The printer is lightning fast even in regular mode. I was blown away how fast it is so this is a major plus. I HATE the fact that there is no document feeder. This means I have to keep my old HP printer around for bulk copying of documents which is really annoying. Contrary to some prior post you CAN have HP printers work with this printer without an issue. I am doing it. Photos print fantastically well but in order to get the best color match I used the Adobe RGB 98 profile with Photoshop. The printer has a variety of profiles and is very very tweakable which is really helpful. Full bleed photos were so good my friends could not believe they came from this printer. I used the Canon photo plus glossy II 4x6 photo paper. Set that output for the printer so that it optimizes for that printing surface.

Scanning:

Contrary to another reviewer I had absolutely no problems scanning over the net. Interface to Photoshop 7.01 and CS4 was flawless and the scanner utility is very nice and tweakable. For the person that said it looked very digital I would suggest setting the DPI values in advanced settings up to the max 4800 dpi since the default is 1200. I scanned 35mm film negatives and was blown away how well they came out. The instructions for the use of the film scanning tray are sketchy but eventually I figured it out and am thrilled about the way I can use it. Scanning photos worked really well also. If you use Photoshop you don''t have to have the scanning utility do the work of removing dust etc but it does have that feature if you want it.

I would have given this printer 5 stars if it had a document feeder and the setup and documentation were better. If judged for scanning and printing only I would absolutely give it 5 stars. My daughter is an animator and artist and she needed a printer that would provide accurate color and she is very happy with it. I will say that it worked without any problems on 64 bit Vista using Adobe Photoshop CS4 which was really nice.

I waited to try all four features of this printer before reviewing it document printing, scanning, photo printing, and photocopying. Generally, this printer is a beauty, both looks-wise and operationally. There is a pop up screen with a very bright menu that also displays photos. You are supposed to be able to edit them right there, but I didn''t actually try that feature of this printer. The sleek, shiny, black rounded body has very cool back-lit buttons for all the functions right on the top. You can also control them from the computer. I found myself going back and forth between both, for both everyday functionality and the set up.

I have to say a REALLY great feature about this printer, which I didn''t expect to love as much as I do, is the wireless printing capability. You don''t have to keep this printer anywhere near your computer, just an outlet. If you have a laptop and like to use it in front of the TV, you will absolutely love the freedom it provides.

I would rate all of the individual features rate highly except the document printing. Here''s my review of the features from best to relatively worst:

1. Photo printing prints either directly from your card (no computer needed technically). You can print up to 600 dpi with this. The photos are crisp and clear, and color is accurate. The only thing I didn''t like was the extremely rudimentary photo editing software. It is easy to use, yes, but it doesn''t do much. If you want to retouch your photos, use either Photoshop or one of the free pieces of software. I like Picasa even. That may be simple, but it''s better than this. Smaller printer paper loads from the back of the machine. Regular paper goes in a drawer in the front, which I really liked.

2. Photocopying I find it''s a relief to have a photocopier for the occasional document that needs photocopying. Here you''ll have a color copier too. The colors also rendered accurately here.

3. Scanning I tried a document and photos (you can scan your signature and then cut and paste it into letters, btw, which is a nice touch if you''re sending out cover letters online). It did a great job on all kinds of documents, as well as my signature. Remember though that you can only print at 600 dpi with this machine, which may be a deal killer for a handful of people. The photo scanning wasn''t quite up to the quality of the photo printing however. I scanned in a photo of my mom, and boosted the contrast slightly. The picture came out warmer and less detailed than the original photo. You can correct this on Photoshop, but in my opinion you shouldn''t have to. Again, I was a little stymied by the fact that the photo editing software was so rudimentary but if you have different software you should be able to work this out.

4. Document printing this printer comes with two black cartridges one is much larger than the other one and is just for printing. I have a small laser printer and am spoiled by it, so that is the caveat. First, the documents print out very slowly. It takes a while to prepare itself to print, and then when it does start to print, it''s pretty slow. That was actually the only thing that disappointed me about this printer. The document quality is very good, but in my opinion doesn''t reach the near-laser quality that some of the HP printers do. Considering this is an all-in-one, you can''t kill it for that issue. However, because of that and the slowness I wouldn''t recommend this printer to anyone who regularly does things like college term papers, or other things where you print out large documents on a regular basis -the lack of speed would drive you crazy. I also liked my resume better on the laser printer, naturally. But the slowness and lack of laser-like crispness are what killed one of the stars on this rating. There was a cool thing about printing though the front door automatically pops open when the printer starts. I liked that.

I would say that this is an excellent printer for people who want really good photo printing, need scanning and photocopying capability, which are also good, but don''t have large print jobs on a regular basis. The user interface and the beauty of the thing itself make it a complete pleasure to operate. Never thought I''d be saying that about a piece of electronic equipment. The ink cartridges are kind of small, so that''s another consideration unless you can find a good, cheap dealer on E-bay.

Installation this is one where you have to be ready. Plug and play this is not. You have to load the printer head, the printer cartridges, and keep going back and forth between the computer and printer screen (which gives you directions) to set it up, no matter what the directions say. Give yourself an hour, because it may not go that smoothly. I actually had no problems already had a wireless router and didn''t have to go through what some others have, but it was tedious and I did notice that you have to pay as much attention to what the computer is saying as what the printer is telling you to do, and found installing the printer head less straight forward that it should have been.

We (my wife and I) printed up a photo which we already had in a frame because we wanted to send it to someone and were absolutely astounded by the quality difference which came out of this printer versus the professionally produced ones from the photo counter at CVS we had been using before. The photos from this printer are bright and true to the colors, contrast, and brightness of the actual subjects we shot--our pet rabbit of 11 years in this case who died last November. The Canon prints aren''t just slightly better, they are very obviously better.

But just to make sure we weren''t fooling ourselves, we then printed the photo again on the cheapest grade photo paper, and again on plain (multipurpose) paper. There was no notable quality difference in the images coming out of the Canon on these three types of paper, and they all far outshined the prints from the photo counter.

So then we printed again, using the same make and model of photo paper on both the PIXMA MG8120 and our other Canon printer, the MP495 (which costs only about $79 compared to the MG8120 which sells for just under $300). While the image quality in terms of sharpness was better than the MP495 on both the MG8120 (of course) and the Kodak system used at the photo counter of the drug store, the lower price MP495 prints were still brighter and truer to color than the photo counter prints.

OK, so now the question is, is it worth it to buy the MG8120 over the MP495? It depends on what you''re into. If you''re really into photography or even just an avid snapshot photographer, then absolutely you should get the higher priced MG8120 featured on this page; but if you want prints which are still excellent--and I mean ''excellent''--at an incredible bargain price, then get the MP495. Both are Canon PIXMA printers, and they both blow away getting your photos done at the drug store, or Wal-Mart, or wherever it is you''ve been comparatively wasting your money on professional photo printing until now.

We have since reprinted every single digital photo in the house and they are all shockingly beautiful--like going from analogue TV to 1080p Hi-Definition.

OTHER FEATURES: Of course, the MG8120 also has a lot of features it''s lower price cousin does not such as: a preview and system screen and ports for various kinds of input devices and cords most notably. You don''t need your computer to print with the MP8120.

It''s also multilingual--including Japanese, Chinese, and Korean (which have completely different writing systems of their own), but also a lot of languages you don''t usually find options for on electronics devices like Croatian and Polish.

Add that this printer also has a paper tray included in the bottom, whereas paper has to be fed in the back of the MP495.

BOTTOM LINE: If you''re buying a printer for school, then get the MP495 which will far exceed your needs for an incredibly low price; but if you''re running a small business or you''re some other kind of heavy user of a wireless printer/scanner or you''re really into photography, then you should treat yourself to the MP8120--which is still a remarkable deal for all that it does at the high level of quality it delivers.

Either choice will have you never going to an outside source for your printing needs again.

I would like to give the Canon Pixma mg8120 and solid 5-star rating for the photo printing alone. I just got this printer yesterday. It was on sale for with free shipping. What a deal!

The set-up was well-documented and easy. The only glitch I ran into was an error message on the LCD display that said the "inner door" was open and I needed to close it. It took me several minutes of messing around to bumble into this thingy inside that I pulled down and then pulled back up--a lever of some sort. That was the "inner door" and that fixed the problem. Someone else asked what the inner door was for. I''m asking the same question. It''s not a big deal and I''m not complaining. I just included this experience in case someone else runs into the same glitch. Don''t panic. It''s fixable.

The machine is solid and quiet and not as heavy as I thought it was going to be. And it is beautiful. Not that I care. But it''s a nice perk. My HP 6988 shakes all over the place when it prints, but I thought it was pretty quiet until I got the Canon, which hums along very pleasingly and steadily.

I''m an artist and I make prints and cards from my original paintings. I''m fussy beyond the telling. I want my collectors to have the best quality artwork. Even my Canon Pixma Pro 9500 MkII cannot print on simple card stock like this printer can. The images are just gorgeous. I haven''t tested it with fine art paper yet, but that''s not as big a test as doing bright, accurate, detailed images on plain ol'' card stock. Beautiful.

The document quality is so-so. I wanted to be totally in love with the Canon 8120, I was so excited to get it. But all my HP''s have printed text that is sharper and blacker at every setting. The HIGH setting on the Canon prints nicely, although just a tad less sharp than the HP. And who wants to spend a fortune on ink by printing at the highest setting all the time? However the duplex feature works very well. On the HP the duplexer is attached at the back and this is the second HP on which the duplexer shakes loose during printing, causing paper jams if you don''t snap it back in.

The scanner is okay. It did a respectable job on some dusty old slides. In fact it provided very good resolution, which I punched up in Photoshop. However in copying and scanning regular photos or artwork, it looses detail and the colors are not as accurate as I would like. To be fair, I need to practice with it and learn what tweaks will get the best results. I think my Epson 4180 does a better job, but we''ll see with time. I''m still glad to have a nice scanner with the printer. And please keep in mind that I want copies and scans of my artwork to be PERFECT! So, for most purposes the scanner is good enough.

All in all, I really like this machine. It''s worth what I paid for it for it''s photo printing alone. But honestly, I would not have been pleased to pay the full list price considering the not-so-perfect text quality in standard mode. I will continue to use my HP for printing documents. As for the scanner, it is pretty nice. I think I just need to learn to use it better. And as I tweak things in Photoshop all the time, that isn''t a problem for me.

I loved the scan features for photos and slides, also the print quality of the ink. However, it appears that 30 copies of black and white word documents eat up the ink. At the cost of close to $100 to replace all the cartriges this printer is not economical at all. I have looked into bulk ink but cannot find the where tos or how tos. If Cannon wants to sell this kind of quality printer then they need to make the ink economical and last thru at least a ream of paper.

This is my first wireless printer and the setup for wireless connection was not too difficult, except that my firewall interfered with being able to connect, so had to shut it off temporarily. If you plan to use this in wireless mode be sure that 1) You already have a wireless router and 2) You know the pass phrase for your router. You have to enter the pass phrase into the printer and it is very time-consuming, but at least you only do it once. You can use the printer with a USB cable if you don''t want to set it up for wireless. The software installation on the PC was very time consuming too. It took probably close to 20 minutes or more. This is the first printer that I have had where I had to install the print head myself. The print head (not much more than a tray to hold the ink cartridges) is not difficult to install, but it took me a few tries to figure out how it went in. Finally when I got it tilted just right, it slipped right into place. This is a gorgeous looking printer with a sleek black color and a flip up LED panel with a clear bright display. Menus are easy to understand and obvious. I didn''t get confused or stuck on any settings. I am a little concerned about the small size of the ink cartridges, wondering how long before they run out. There are six cartridges, so they may last a while, since printing a color page would only use a little from each one. The printing seems fast compared to my older printers. Initial settings do not print the best quality, so if you want good color printing on plain paper, you have to make a change to "high quality" instead of the default "regular" quality. The first pages I printed in regular quality were a little disappointing, but the high quality ones came out great, obviously using more ink. There are two paper trays; one for plain paper and one for photo paper. Photo printing with photo paper produces excellent quality prints. Another big plus to this printer is that it comes with plenty of really good documentation, so if you read the manual and follow the easy step-by-step instructions, you''ll have it set up with no difficulty. It may take a while. Took me well over an hour from the time of unpacking, until I printed my first page from the computer, although some of that time was messing with my pass phrase until I entered it correctly. If you are an impatient type of person who doesn''t want to read instructions, this is probably not the printer for you. This is a wonderful printer, but a little pricey and slightly difficult to set up.

I run it through an Epson 2200 printer with Epson inks, and use the ICC profile that Ilford provides for my printer/paper combination. I noticed excellent contrast, brightness, and sharpness. The bonus here is the included negative scanner. I didn''t buy this from Amazon (sorry, someone else beat the price), but I am pleased with it.

The other reviewer (at this time) complained about the lack of usb cables--but I''m not entirely sympathetic. First, this is standard practice for Epson. If you didn''t know it wasn''t there, then you probably haven''t bought an Espon before this. Second, there is actually a good reason for this: most people are not buying a first printer at this point, and pretty much all cables are the same (as long the connectors fit, you''re good to use it). This cuts down on their costs, which hopefully means a slightly less expensive printer. I personally have 3 or four cables for this printer, and don''t want any more.

As far as quality goes--I don''t have any complaints. It does borderless (edge-to-edge) printing on cardstock (doesn''t support it on regular paper) without any problems, which is one of the things I look for in a printer. It also doesn''t show any banding or striping, which is good for printing photos.

Memory stick support is good (I have a Sony camera that uses Memory Stick), and works well.

Overall, a solid printer. As long as the print heads stay clean, I''ll be happy.

This printer, being my 4th one, is great! I started off with an Epson 740i on my Mac, went to a Lexmark Z52 (awesome talk feature), then went back to Epson for the CX5200. I had to part with that one because of a head problem, but this one is the best one so far! I love the borderless prints, and they look like you just visited the print shop! The scanning and the PictBridge (memory card/digital camera cards) are both very useful and it also includes a device for scanning negatives and slides! Although it doesn''t include a USB cable to hook it up to your computer, if you previously had a printer with a USB cable, then just use the previous USB cable that came with the previous printer. I used the one from the CX5200 (although short), it works great! Cartridges are slightly expensive, but a great machine for anyone needing a great all-in-one printer!

My first Epson Stylus the print heads went out 2 weeks before the warranty ran out (fortunately for me). Tech Support (my dime) was real helpful, sent me out a replacement Fed Ex and they didn''t want the old one returned to them. Because I only had a couple of weeks on the warranty, they explained that the warranty on the replacement would only be good for 30 days and they suggested I buy an extended warranty for $25, which I did. Replacement printer arrived and it was obviously a used, scratched up piece of work that didn''t work from the very beginning, and no ink to get it set up. It refused to take the paper in. Either got the Out of Paper code or Paper Jam code. There was paper loaded and it never even took the paper down in the printer to get it jammed. Called Tech Support (my dime) got an apology and they were sending out another replacement immediately Fed EX. They don''t want the old one back. What about that extended warranty? Well that''s transferable and all I had to do was call the warranty service and give them the new model number when it arrives. Next replacement arrives (no ink to get it set up). I call to transfer the model number and the support guy was rude, refused to let me transfer it, told me the person I talked to was wrong and I asked him to speak to a supervisor to help me get a solution to my problem. He was as high as I was going to go (said he). There was nothing I could do but purchase another extended warranty. I gave him the name and reference numbers of all the people I had spoken with and was told that he hadn''t heard of any of those people. I gave the phone number I''d called & spoke to them, he said there was no such number. When I informed him that it was the number I reached HIM at he said he never called himself at work so had no idea what the number was. The good news was, this was what got me turned over to a supervisor, "David." David was great, fixed me up, apologized to me and life was good. Until today. Once again this replacement printer refused to take the paper in and gives the same codes. I call Tech Support (my dime) the guy asked me the same question 12 times, repeated my answers 12 times and finally, after 35 minutes, I mention we weren''t getting anywhere could I speak to a supervisor. He suddenly kicks into gear and says because I''m under warranty they''ll send one out immediately Fed Ex all he needs is a credit card number to charge the replacement too and when I return the old one they''ll take it off my CC. I told him they''ve never done this before and I''ve never given anyone my CC info before. He insisted that this was how it is done and repeated that he needs the info and he''ll ship it right out. I tell him I won''t give out my CC information without speaking to a supervisor and he hangs up on me. I call tech support again (my dime) and get a real nice gal who''s very helpful I''m getting a replacement Fed Ex''d out immediately. I ask if it will come with ink and she assures me all their replacements come with full ink cartridges. She was sending me out a new used printer so I wasn''t going to fuss with her.

The time frame of this entire story? One year. Right now I have 3 dead Epson printers in my basement, 2 of them have full brand new ink cartridges in them. I suppose I''m going to tough out my extended warranty, I can''t wait to see what they send me next. Everyone I talked to had such heavy accents I can barely understand them, which makes the long distance call longer and the conversation is a communication struggle. Oh, and nobody knows who the heck "David" is. They all say there''s service centers in many areas so nobody knows the name of anyone anywhere else to confirm your information.

Never again will I buy any Epson product.

Update on the on going nightmare of dealing with Epson. The replacement printer sent out on 4/9/07 is no longer working. Once again it refuses to take in the paper and gives the paper jam or no paper message and the 03 & 04 error codes. Once again I call Epson technical support, my dime. It took me all day to gear up for this experience because I know the frustration I''m in for. Once again I get a young man with a heavy accent (he says his name is Joey, his faux supervisor says his name is Neil), once again we go thru the endless repeating of questions, then repeating my answers. A new twist to the tech schpeel was after he had me try to make a copy of something, paper doesn''t get drawn down into the print area, just sits there, error message, "paper jam" on the screen, tech asks me to open the printer and clear the paper jam. I repeat that there is no paper jam because it never pulled the paper into the printer and we did the repeating of my answers 3 or 4 times. I''m put on hold for 3 minutes. A faux supervisor comes on to let me know that a replacement printer will be sent out Fed Ex as soon as I give him a credit card number to secure an order until I return the defective printer. We go thru the entire, "Why are you asking for my CC" argument and I''m told this is how replacements are handled. I explain that I have 3 dead Epson printers in my basement, never gave a credit card number before and we spend another 20 minutes discussing my warranty and that it''s always required to get a credit card number. Well, always except for the other 3 dead Epsons in my basement. I won''t bore you with the frustration of the entire 1 hour & 17 minute phone call (my dime) the good news is, "Nick" the faux supervisor acknowledges that in my records there is indeed a David and I do indeed have an extended warranty through November of 2008. The bad news is I''m getting yet another refurbished replacement printer, I did give a CC number, I''m speaking to the Philipines this time, but the warehouse shipping my 4th refurbished printer is in Long Beach, CA. I''ve had this relationship with Epson since November of 2005. Since my warranty doesn''t expire until 2008 I''m guessing I''ll be talking to heavily accented men from all over the world at least 2 more times and receiving at least 2 more refurbished printers from Long Beach, CA. These printers only have a lifespan of 6-12 months. I can prove it.

Before I buy another printer I''d like to interview the customer support department.

This is the 2nd time I had this printer. First time it broke within 6 months, and it was still under warranty, so I got a replacement. The new one again malfunctioned after 6 months. The prints came out with lines, and certain colored text only show up in pieces, even after repeated head-cleaning and with brand new ink cartridges. I''m dissappointed with the quality of the Epson products and would hesitate buying anything by Epson.

Bought this all-in-one and with the rebate, which is incredible for the features. If you follow the set up instructions to a tee (not hard), this unit works great from the get-go. I am very impressed with the print quality. This computer does not require techno-freaks to figure it out, which is a big plus, and in our case, installation was a breeze. I haven''t had it long, but can tell you I have always had great luck with Epson, and it looks like they have done a great job on a printer that compares favorably with much more expensive models from other manufacurers.

Originally purchased a Kodak i2400 scanner and bought the Capture PRO software to go with it so we could auto index our scans with the barcodes on the sheets. Decided to upgrade to the i1405 so we could handle documents up to 11x17 (A3) in the feed tray. This was a significant jump in price (4x) but 45 PPM vs. a flatbed would have been worth it. Received the scanner, set it up and tried to scan my first batch using the Kodak Capture PRO software. Got an error message saying that my software license does not support this scanner.

Come to find out that Kodak has a sliding scale for licensing this software. Which is to say, the more expensive the scanner you buy, the more you have to pay to license the software! Buy a $600 scanner, pay $500 for the software. Buy a $2500 scanner, pay $1500 for the software. Same software. Only deploying to a single scanner. 3x the price.

So there''s nothing wrong the scanner it''s just the licensing policies of Kodak that I refuse to support.

Edit: Just thought I would touch on this subject a little more. I do still get messages saying can''t identify the cartridges. It''s annoying and sometimes you have to resend print jobs. In my case this happens mostly when printing multiple pages (even single, but chances are greater the more you print). I usually turn the printer off/on or hit the cancel button. This is not what you want to use in an office or if turning the printer on/off frequently really bothers you. It does save huge amounts of money, but it''s annoying.

I read these reviews a couple months ago for this product, but I''ll try not to repeat what I saw in those. In the review I talk alot about the air in the lines for anyone who is curious or concerned, but at the end I talk about not having to modify the case like they did in the video to get my CISS lines to fit in there for the Artisan 837 model.

I just installed this product in my Artisan 837. Before printing anything I wanted to get most of the air out of the lines, since when mine arrived over 1/2 the space of the lines was filled with air instead of ink. This may have been a result of the shipping. I took the syringe provided and sucked air out of each cartrige (remove the silicone plug, removed air and 1-2 milliters of ink, then quickly capped the cartrige again). Some air did get back in the line before I could recap, but after a couple I got good at it and very little if any air was in the lines. I printed 5 full size 8.5x11 inch photos on plain old copy paper just to see how the ink system worked. I had air bubbles in the lines as I said, but even the little that remained was sucked into the cartridges and basically just sits inside the cartridge doing no harm since air is lighter than ink. As I printed more pages you could hear the print head sucking in ink and you could see the air and ink enter the cartrigdes. The only reason I spent so much on this topic is because in the video they don''t talk about air in the lines or if it even matters. In retrospect, it probably doesn''t even matter because the cartridge has plenty of room to have both ink and any air in the lines without harming anything since all the ink exits the cartridge to the print head from the bottom of the cartridge (which you can see the holes on the bottom before you install the cartrige) and the air will just stay at the top while more ink will enter the system and keep the bottom filled with ink. I did get 2 messages (one for black and one for yellow) saying it could not recognize the cartridge and I should reinstall them. The first time I did reinstall, but the second time I just hit the cancel button and everything still seemed to work. I printed a few more pages and did not get any more messages. I did not get any nasty messages about voiding the warrenty or that the printer will keep track of the fact that I used non Epson ink, but honestly I don''t care if my warrenty is void. I paid $199 at Office Max (150 if you include the $50 printer trade in deal they had), but if I put ink in this printer 3x this CISS would have paid for the printer easily. Even though it would be nice to get a replacement printer if this one failed for some reason other than the CISS, it just doesn''t matter if I save all that money on ink. FYI I did print some 4x6 prints on high gloss photo paper and they looked great. If you do need to buy more ink make sure you do not get any lint or dust in the system so you don''t clog your print heads. I would almost reccommend just buying another CISS since it''s only $40 and comes prefilled.

Ok so how did I get the CISS lines into the case without doing any type of modification to the case? It was simple. I found a piece of plastic laying around the house and it was kinda "L" shaped. I cut it to fit in the hole just behind the majenta ink cartridge. The fact that it was "L" shaped allowed me to lay the plastic flat with one end in the hole and the other end taped secure to the printer using duct tape. If you pay careful attention when closing the lid you will figure out that in that hole there is a piece of plastic that get''s pressed down when you close the lid to the printer after installing the ink. The printer lid has a small piece of plastic sticking out of it that fits in that hole. All you need to do is find something around your house that can fill that hole well. I suggest it''s approximates the shape and depth of the piece of plastic attached to the printer case. I had first used a round piece of plastic, but found out that the thing your supposed to be pressing down on can move around quite a bit, so I switched to something shaped much more like the plastic on the case. You could probably stick a piece of bubble gum or silly puddy in there, but you could probably cut a nice piece of stiff cardboard to stick in there. With that in place I routed the ink lines down the front of the case right in the middle of where it reads "Artisan 837", when the case is closed. I was able to close the lid all but about 1 centimeter. I can feel the case fits a little snug against the tubing when you close the lid, but it did not pinch the tubing at all. It''s just a bit snug at the front of the case/lid. I did put a soft piece of rubber inside to prevent me from closing the lid all the way and pinching the tubing on accident. I placed the rubber right on top of the "L" shaped piece of plastic I installed to trick the sensor. That''s about it for the review, but I will mention one last thing of interest. Epson obviously designed the case to prevent using this device or anything like it. The plastic around the ink cartridges and on the lid would definitely pinch your ink lines if you tried to close the lid all the way down. Without tricking the sensor or cutting out some of the plastic on the case you would never be able to use this system, since they require the lid to be closed before you can print anything. I really think they should redo that video for this CISS to include some of the things I mentioned in this review. If anyone wants to watch the video now the link is the following..

This system works great with my artisan 810 printer. But beware that there is a slight modification you need to do in order to run the ink lines that will most likely void your warentee. All in all this is a good way to keep from having to replace your expensive ink cartrages all the time and it has worked extramly well for me. The install was easy (especially if you ave a drummel tool like I do) just make sure you cover the inside of your printer with a towel while you remove the tab in order to keep junk from getting in your printer.

I was a little skeptical when I saw this product, but when I realized the potential gain, I had to give it a try. Now that I have had it a week and have had a chance to see it in action I would highly recommend it. Printing with my Artisan 800 is a major expense the thing gobbles up cartridges like it thought I was rich! I have printed more in the past week than I did in the previous year. The installation is pretty easy when you watch the movie. I spilled a little blue ink before I got it right no big problem if you cover your working area with old newspapers and wear rubber gloves. Once installed the thing took off immediately and began to feed the ink nicely. All the bubbles in the line eventually worked their way through and it works perfectly. After the first installation all I should have to do is fill the reservoirs on the big tank and that looks like a breeze. The quality of the prints is great! My wife even says they are better than the Epson ink. I don''t know if they are better, but they are at least equal. Since Epson charges about $5,000.00 a gallon for ink this sure is a lot less expensive! I use to own a mail order business for fifteen years and printed my own flyers and advertising. Ink was inexpesive back then I don''t know what got into these people with the prices they charge now. It is just ridiculous to pay that kind of money... Buy this product and laugh at the cost of printing this is great!

I have no issues with this CIS system when used with my Epson Artisan 730 when printing 2-3 pages at a time. It is only when I start doing batch printing 15+ pages continually that the printer would fail to recognize the cartridge with some error message displayed on the LCD. I would then have to open the lid, press the reset button on the cartridge, then restart the printer. This has happened consistently that it''s becoming practically impossible to do batch printing.

It could be Epson being more restrictive with 3rd party ink cartridges or the cartridge manufacturer not engineering the chip well for the Artisan 730. Just something to keep in mind of.

I have another CIS from Hotzone for my Epson Artisan 50 and it has served me very well for close to 2 years now, heavy batch printing and all.

You know the deal. Just when someone in the house needs to print something ASAP you are out of one color. Printer won''t print because you''ve already exhausted the "if you would like the printer can substitute blah blah... to allow u to print" warning. You''ve known for days that u were running low on ink but just didn''t want to run to the store and pay the piper once again. Whether it was my resume, my daughters science project or a picture we needed to be able to print now! Of course this reality happens at 10 PM when most stores are closed. Well those days are hopefully behind me for a long long time. Couple of pointers. Watch the install videos. They are very helpful. Suprsingly the plastic on the printer broke just like it did in the video on my Epson Artisan 835 using a pair of regular pliers. Also my unit came with all the tubes full of air bubbles. Again watch the video by the same company on priming the CISS system. Insert the syringe "PLUNGER IN CLOSED" position (no air) into the ink tube (small colored plug already removed) and pull up on the plunger. Ink will fill in the tubes. Do it for each tube as needed. Their shouldn''t be any air bubbles in any of the tubes. Now your ready to install the cartridges into the printer. TIP: I did not remove the plastic coverings on the bottom of the ink cartridges before installing them. No instructions were provided on this, however in the video they say to push down on the cartridges until they snap into place. I thought I had them in and the printer said they werent installed all the way. I pushed down harder and heard them snap into place. I realized that pushing down hard also forces the printer nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge holder to break through the plastic on the CISS ink cartridges. It worked for me. I hope this review helps some of you out there.

I was looking for a color printer, as I only had a b/w laser printer. Since I have owned digital cameras since 1999, it was time to get a photo quality printer.

Performed exhaustive reseasrch. Conclusion 1 device must have separate ink cartridges to conserve ink and expenses. That ruled out anything by HP.

I really wanted an awesome photo printer to go with my Canon S400 Elph (4 megapixel) camera. There are dozens of great photo printers with separate ink cartridges. I was able to narrow my finalists to Canon and Epson.

I loved the Epson R300M, because it had a 6-ink system, and it could print directly on white CD-R discs with it''s special tray. It also had phenomenal quality. Canon had a couple that competed nicely in quality and price, but in the end, the Epson had a slight edge.

Knowing I could get a great photo printer a a reasonable cost, I started looking for other nice features to narrow the field. The Epson R300M delivered awesome quality photo prints at the showroom, and it could print on printable CD/DVD media. Way cool. The 6-ink system was primo. You could also save $50 by getting the R300, which just doesn''t have the color LCD screen (which I really don''t need). The 300M was completely out of stock everywhere, and the 300 was in short supply.

I liked the idea of a multifunction device (MFD), so I could get rid of my UMAX scanner and replace it with something that could print and scan. Having a copier was also a huge plus in an MFD. I have a fax machine, so I don''t need the device to do this, and I don''t need an automatic document feeder for multiple pages. I don''t scan multi-page documents.

Conclusion 2 The device must have a flatbed scanner, not a sheet-fed scanner. I wanted to be able to scan unusual documents, such as paper that was not square on the edges (kid''s artwork, etc.). A sheet-fed scanner also has trouble with different thicknesses. Some jam when feeding a thin magazine sheet, and others jam when the paper is too thick, like a post card.

The pool of candidates was manageable now. I read reviews in PC Magazine and PC World, as well as reviews on websites, and the manufacturer specs for each model.

The Epson CX6400 looked to be at the head of the pack. It was a 4-ink system (not 6), but the DuraBright inks were getting good reviews. I bought it, and stayed up until 1am playing with my new toy. On premium glossy paper, the prints were very good. However, they had a matte, or maybe a semi-gloss cast to them, event on the best glossy paper. Other printers delivered a glossier photo-processing feel to them. I could live with that for the price and features it had. The 6-ink system was not in the cards for me if I wanted a MFD flatbed device.

The next morning, while reading the Sunday paper, I saw an ad for a brand new MFD by Epson. It was the RX500. Here''s the bottom line. It has the same 6-ink system as the R300/M, and it is a flatbed MFD. Nirvana!

I exchanged the units the next morning. Wow! The printouts are just like a photo lab with my 4 megapixel shots. Even my older 2 megapixel shots looked great.

You can do almost everything on the device without a computer, as it has card slots for almost every media type. When you print from the computer, the software lets you tweak the quality even higher.

Liked the Epson CX6400. Love the RX500. The RX500 is the best of both worlds. For $50 more, get the RX500.

For those who can''t afford the table space for separate machines for scanning, copying, and printing, this item is a very good solution, if not perhaps quite as small as a pin-head. Though considerably larger than a standard ink-jet printer, it''s still small enough to fit on most computer tables, and considerably smaller than what three separate machines would occupy.

The assembly and installation instructions were adequate to the task, much better than most instruction books that are poor translations of Japanese or Chinese. Assembly itself took about five minutes, consisting of mounting a couple of page guides/holders, removing some shipping tape, and installing the ink cartridges. The included software installation went without any hitches on my XP machine, and the operating system recognized the new USB device as soon as it was plugged in (NOTE: don''t plug in the USB cable till told to do so in the installation instructions). Having the printer connected via USB is quite an advantage no big bulky cable, and transfer speeds are much higher, significant when dealing large high resolution scanned images.

Of course, the real test is making it do some useful work! My first test was a five page Word document with embedded italics, super and sub-scripts. This printed in about thirty seconds, about 5 seconds of which was the XP operating system setting up to send the document. Print quality was excellent using the default printer settings, barely distinguishable from a laser printer output.

Next up was scanning in a glossy 3x5 photograph. At the default settings, this scanned in as a 1440 x 1000 pixel JPEG image (about 300dpi). Looking at the resulting file with Olympus Camedia software at 400% image size, some small graininess can be detected, and there were some small spots that were apparently dust specs picked up by the scanner so a must is keeping the scanner bed and the item to be scanned absolutely clean. Taking this same image without alteration and printing it back out on CX6400 using high quality glossy paper and printer default settings, and comparing to the original, some slight loss of definition and brightness was noticed, but there was no banding, blotching, or significant color alteration. Using this same photo, scanned in using higher resolution, ''fixed'' using the supplied software, and printed at the printer''s best settings produced a print almost indistinguishable from the original, though it did take a significant amount of time to print at these settings, about six minutes.

Copying text pages produced good copies, but it took an inordinate amount of time to start printing, over six minutes with image enhancement turned on, and about two minutes with it turned off, set for text, black and white only. The provided software control panel for this looks very much like a standard office copier display, so finding your way around the various options is pretty easy. The supplied OCR software (ABBYY Fine Reader 5.0 Sprint Plus) worked very well on a standard text page, but it did eliminate the spacing between paragraphs.

The provided image enhancement software is fairly basic. If you need to do serious work with photos, I''d recommend using Adobe Photoshop rather than this, but if most of your work is cropping, eliminating red-eye, hue/saturation/contrast adjustments, this software will be quite adequate.

I have not tried the memory card reader functions, as my camera automatically interfaces to my computer as a USB drive. For those who need such a reader, though, the CX6400 provides interface ports for just about all types of memory cards.

Price wise, this machine is quite competitive with other multi-function printers on the market. It''s best feature is its high resolution for scanning and printing photos, which few other machines match, and it works quite well as an everyday text printer.

The quality of printing is quite good at least I didn''t have any problem. The delay before it starts to print is a few seconds but I can live with it. It has four separate cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) and it''s supposed to help to preserve the ink. I thought that my old HP laser color printer with one cartridge has actually lasted a little longer. This printer has interface for all major memory cards and allows to print directly from them without PC involved which could come very handy. The buttons and menus on the printer itself could be more straightforward though. I was very impressed with the software that comes with this device. It really does a great job of self diagnostic and eliminating a problem. I had one of cartridges dirty (I didn''t know about this at the time). The software not only found the problem but also cleaned the head. All this without me even opening the cover. All in all, it''s a very good printer and copier for the price with the bonus of having a mediocre scanner but even this is quite adequate for my moderate scanning needs.

This is an excellent piece of equipment. The 6400 is everything you will want for quality, dependability, and all around perfection in an all-in-one. I researched many different items, and found this to be the best of all. As far as the review on the RX500 all I can say is this too is a good unit, but leans more to printing your pictures from your digital cam. When you are focusing on that, you need to keep in mind, the more cartridges you have, the more cartridges you will need to replace. The CX6400 does have four cartridges and that is enough. When the copy was coming out, it looked so close to the real thing, I at first thought the original cardboard had somehow been pushed out. It was so real, and perfect looking, you couldn''t tell the difference from the real thing. You will definitly be pleased if you pick this item. You will not be sorry, or wish you had gotten something else. In fact, once you get it home and use it, you will find you stop looking for anything else, or wanting to possibly see if there is something else out there. That is unless you are wanting to use it only for pictures and in that case, save the time and focus on buying a unit that specializes only in that.

The scanner is a flatbed, that not only lifts up, but the lid will actually lift off. If you have an oversized item, or awkward piece, to copy or scan, this is a wonderful plus.

There are three (3) card slots that will accomodate any digital camera you may have.

The front receiving tray is designed nicely, so your copy will come directly out to you, from the paper loading dock in the rear. I love the fact that it is a stationary unit and does not have the top that glides from side to side, to operate.

The ability to make changes on the cartridges is very easy with the lift top that opens wide enough that you are not subjected to a small, dark area to try and replace them. A simple flip out and slip in and you are ready to go.

The paper tray holds plenty of pper and has an easy drop in tray. The envelopes fit in nicely and print out perfect each time.

Set up is easy and a snap. Plug your cable in follow a few simple instructions, and you''re ready to go. The light up touch keys, and the lcd are easy to read and perfectly located on the front of the unit. Right where they should be when you are using a piece of equipment.

I replaced my old, defective printer (Epson Photo Stylus R300) and got this one on 11-16 (My birthday too, he he), and I have to say that I am overall pretty satisfied.

The Dura Brite Ink cartridges (4) are pretty good, yet the oversized black cartridge is $35 to replace. It has a built in indicator to tell you how much ink you have left in increments of 10%. Right now I have 80% in the colors and 70% in the black one after many, many copies black and white, some photo printing, and lots of internet page printing in the past 2 weeks.

The flatbed scanner/copier is 1200x2400 DPI which is acceptable for an "all-in-one". I can copy magazine pages, regular documents, pictures, even objects flawlessly.

On the topic of speed, I must say it has done well in that category. It is much more swift than my ''00 HP T65 all-in-one. It copies black and white text in less than 20 seconds I''d say.

In the Features category it has also done well. The card slots have greatly helped me print photo indexes to scan and then print automatically. You can scan something and then directly without a computer save the picture to a card.

This product bundled pretty good software. My favorite is the word-recognition software. You can scan basically any typed document and then it will recognize, rotate, and crop the document so it is almost flawless which comes in handy if you need to update something but have lost the computer documentation of it.

Well, that pretty much sums it all up about the things I can think of that I like with this product. I''d recommend it to a friend just basically because it works and is worth the $180 price tag.

I''ve tried numerous papers on my aging HP 970 CXi and HP 930C printers, and for glossy prints Kodak Ultima is by far the best. The paper is thick, heavy, and relatively durable. Even heavy black areas dry quickly. Greyscale looks like greyscale, not like sepia as it does on many other papers. Colors are vibrant with sharp edges, and true to the original, especially when the saturation is boosted one notch in the print driver. I have not been able to test the paper on other printers, but if it''s anything like this you won''t be dissapointed.

I use an Epson Photo 780 and I take my photographs seriously, so Kodak was my first choice and I expected the best quality from them. Although I own an EOS D30 digital camera, I still prefer to use Kodachrome in my EOS 5 and prefer Kodak paper for my analog prints.

I was both surprised and disappointed to find I got better results from the Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper and the Jet Print Professional Photo Paper, Superior Glossy Finish (International Paper). The color looks good on the Kodak paper and I love the thickness of this stock, but the finish is not as smooth and photo-finish like as the other two papers. The images on this paper look like they were computer printed with inkjet; a slight embossed appearance, when viewed from the edge. With the other two papers, the photos have a perfectly smooth surface and feel like they were analog photo printed. In addition, in my experience the Jet Print paper from International Paper was considerably less expensive too!

I chose this paper as I am tired of having to reprint photos printed on other papers which have faded through time, especially if framed and placed anywhere that is exposed to sunlight.

I can hardly contest the claim that photos printed on this paper will last 100 years. That is after all why I chose it. However, that becomes less of a unique selling point when firstly, the weight of the paper is perilously close to what my HP psc 1350 All In One inkjet printer considers the limit for comfortable loading. It is necessary to position any prints well clear of the top of the page, otherwise the printer is likely to paper jam. Secondly, the paper is particularly ''sticky'', especially after printing. I leave all prints to ''dry'' for 24 hours, but find that they still stick to the glass in a frame and this causes dark spots where the print is in contact with the glass.

So the prints may not fade, but you risk getting frustrated by paper jams and even if they do go through your printer, they won''t look that good in a glass picture frame.

Yes, these Brother toners do only count the number of pages printed to determine the amount of toner left. When one of the CMY color runs out, they all run out at the same time. Even though the printer may say its completely out of toner, that might not be the case always. To reset the toner (if you know there''s ample amount of toner still left), unscrew the two screws on the side, pop off the side cover, and turn the gray gear wheal counterclockwise 90 degrees.

Brother color printers are set to ''run out'' of toner after a set number of color pages printed. So there is often plenty of toner left in the cartridge.

To reset the 9440cn printer, turn the printer on and open the toner access main door. You get a ''door open'' message on the LCD. Press Clear/Back and you get the toner reset menu. You can then reset the carts by hand using the up/down arrows and the 1 key to select reset.

At the end the printer will report all the carts as full. You can then replace them when they are empty, not when it suits the planned obsolescence dept.

The toner cartridges for the Brother 4070cdw work very well, there were no issues for the ease of use and consistancy or quality. the only negitive to report is the number of copies expected from there advertising versis the number of actual was very low about 50% of the expected. many conditions may have caused this but in a nutshell there could be much more toner in these cartridges for the cost of each. they are great products but at a cost per copy that is much to high in comparison to others.

These toners are easy to install. One thing though, after the first warning of these toners being low I take them out and check the little round window to see if there is still toner. If there is, I wind back the gear with a peg on it back to its original position. I recently did this with all three colors as it was reported they were going low. After winding back the gears, the printer performed perfectly for another month with a moderate amount of color printing. Finally, the low toner warnings went off again and since there appeared no more toner, I installed new ones. I have a closet full of these consumables and look forward to many great years printing with these printers. (We have 6 of them)
