HP LaserJet 2420dn Monochrome Printer

HP LaserJet 2420dn Monochrome Printer
  • Up to 30 ppm print speed; 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution
  • 64 MB memory, expandable to 320 MB, 2 open Compact Flash slots
  • Parallel and USB 2.0 interfaces, EIO slot
  • HP Jetdirect Fast Ethernet embedded print server
  • 100-sheet multipurpose tray, 250-sheet input tray; automatic two-sided printing

We used an HP LaserJet 4M plus for years. The 2420 warms up quicker and prints much faster.

Unlike the 4M, the 2420 is silent! In fact, I often forget to turn it off when leaving the office.

The descriptions for the 2420 are confusing. The 500-sheet paper tray is NOT included. We bought one separately.

The 2420dn is a great printer and meets every need I have in a mono laser. It''s very, very fast, the first page is out in less than 10 seconds. The built-in networking is fast and works great. I was previously using an Intel Netport print server with an HP 1320, and it was just too slow. The integrated networking in the 2420dn is really fast. Duplexing works great, the Tray 1 manual feeder works great with envelopes. I can not find a single bad thing to say about the 2420dn, it has everything I wanted in a laser for my home office. I know HP is a different company than they were years ago, but I still trust their laser printers as the industry standard. I had a model 4P b/w laser printer for 10 years, never had a single problem with it. But look at how far things have come. I spent $925 on that 4P back in 1995, it printed 600dpi at 4 pages/minute and came with I think 2MB onboard memory. This 2420dn does 1200dpi at 30ppm, and comes with 64MB memory onboard. Sounds like a bargain...

I am buying my fourth HP 2420 today (all in use, not as replacements). I love these! This printer handles the graphics I print better than other printers-I''ve had to send other models back because they couldn''t print what I bought them for. Printing times are reasonable, and the print quality is great. They are a little loud, which was never an issue at work (we have lots of machinery-I didn''t even notice it)-only noticed it when I set one up in my living room at home.

This printer has been very sturdy. The rollers do wear out, but they are easily replaced. (Search the web for methods to do it yourself.) It does the duplexing well as well as being on the network.

This printer is a workhorse. Very satisifed with this rebuilt printer and the company we bought it through. It was very easy to add to our network.

I am a nice guy. I have patience. Customer service is inherently frustrating, I''m okay with that. Things take time. Things break. I''m okay with that too. But this is OFF THE !@#$% SCALES OF BEING OKAY.

1. My printer broke. Wouldn''t scan or copy, just print.

2. I call customer service. I describe the problem. They said they''d send a replacement part and a guy would come fix it. Weird, for a $300 printer, but whatever.

3. The printer guy comes. Says they sent the wrong part. Reorders the part.

4. Two weeks go by. I call Samsung. The part is on INDEFINITE BACKORDER. I was not told. I talk to "Executive Customer Service", they say that they can just send another part that works just as well. WHY DIDN''T THEY JUST SEND THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE?

5. The printer guy comes back. Installs the part, it doesn''t work. He says that he charges $400/hour. That means Samsung has already paid for two replacement parts + shipping and about $1200 in repairs to NOT fix my broken $300 printer. Genius. He marks it "unrepairable". I call Samsung, they say they''re going to call me when his report goes through their system.

6. A week later. They never called me, so I call Samsung. They say they''ll finally send me a new printer. GREAT!! FINALLY!!!

7. ...wait. They''re not sending me a new printer. They''re sending me a new unit, but I have to keep the toner, the accessories, and I have to pull out the "imaging unit" and put it in a box because if I expose it to light, the whole thing is destroyed and my printer is worthless. No matter that I don''t know what the part looks like, I should be able to pull it out in the dark and put it in the conveniently sized light-proof box I don''t have. Great. I ask for an email instruction or checklist so I can make sure to take out all the right parts. The Samsung tech support guy says "we don''t have email." Really? Great move. A tech support department without email. Perfect.

8. Nope...not over yet. They aren''t sending ME the printer. It''s getting sent to my local UPS store. I now have to hope I pull out all the right parts to my broken printer in the dark, put them in a box so the "imaging unit" doesn''t break, go to the UPS store, pick up the new one, and hope that I can put it all back together at my house and that I haven''t left a part in the old printer because I''m supposed to take out the parts that were on a list that they wouldn''t give me.

9. I call the UPS store that Samsung tells me about. They have no idea what I''m talking about and have never had a Samsung printer sent to them, ever.

YOU SAMSUNG!!!!

Your crappy Epson printer breaks, they send you a new one for free, you don''t even have to send the old one back. THAT''S customer service. I will never buy another Samsung product, just to not have to deal with this moronic process again.

Pros: Meets Expectations, Features, network scan with mac and pc great

Cons: Set up

I purchased this All-in-One color laser printer last night from my local Office Max. I was hoping to see in store how to function of the wireless actually worked. The sales guy was unable to demonstrate this after trying on one or two of the floor computers. As a leap of faith (and a few months of reading on the internet before purchasing), I bought the machine at the sale price plus the 2 year OfficeMax warranty.

I brought it home and unpacked and plugged it into the wall at a location not next to a computer or next to a router or wired network connection. My first idea was to set this up wirelessly so I can leave it a universally accessible location like my family room. Well playing with the 2 inch display and 10 digit keypad was becoming frustrating. The printer found my wireless SSID, I typed in the proper credentials but the wireless functionality never started. I then moved the printer next to the router and a computer which I should mention is a Netgear 802.11g router and an old G4 eMac running OS X.4.

Before I tried accepting this to my network, I decided to give it a static IP address on my router. I typed in the MAC address and the IP address I wanted. Then using the CLX-3175FW''s 2 inch screen and on-board menu, I entered that static IP into the network configuration. I plugged the printer using an ethernet cable into my router and typed the IP address in my Firefox browser on the eMac. It immediately opened the SyncThruWeb page and I was able to configure some settings.

I immediately tried to setup the wireless function. I tried ever possible configuration and disconnection of the ethernet cable possible. I could not get the wireless function started. I plan on calling Samsung when I have an hour to kill. At this point I decided to move onto the next couple tasks, setting up the printer and scanner, and maybe fax.

I downloaded the software from Samsung''s website: 1. Smart Panel 2. Print Driver and 3. Scan manager. I installed the Print driver first, then the scan manager, then the Smart Panel on the eMac. Once I did that, I opened up System Preferences and added the printer to the computer. Once that was done, the Smart Panel icon in the top right was active. I clicked it and was able to access all fucntions of set-up using Samsung Smart Panel. I decided to set-up scanning now.

Within the menu of the Smart Panel, there is an option for Scan Manager. On the eMac, I clicked this and I was able to locate the CLX-3175FW on my network. I set up a folder and two applications. First folder was just generic PDF scanning. My wife likes to scan bills and semi-important mail and documents. The ADF feeder will take 15 pages and scan a multipage PDF file. I then created an application prompt to open up Adobe Acrobat. I often use Acrobat to scan important work documents and need robust functionality to edit and review documents. I then set up a iPhoto application for when want to scan pictures from the flatbed, etc. Time to test.

I grabbed some mail, I had a 5 page wireless bill, and stuffed it into the ADF on-top. The Samsung beeps to let you know you are ready. I select the scan button and scroll right to select "Scan to PC" and click ok. I can see that it found my eMac so I click ok. It then sees the folder I setup called Bills/Mail so I select that. It then asks for color or gray, 300 DPI, etc. I click ok, ok, ok until it finally starts scanning. Immediately on a screen pops up on the eMac showing the progess of the scanned document. The scan finishes in less than a minute and immediately Preview opens up ans shows me my 5 pages scanned document....pretty slick.

I then decide to set up all this on my two laptops. I have a G4 iBook running OS X.4.11 and an Acer Netbook running Windows XP Home. As expected, the scanning function worked exactly the same on the other two computers. I am very happy with the scanning function. It works MUCH better than I could imagine. I use an MFP at work, Ricoh Aficio 161, and the Samsung software is much easier to use and gives better options for scanning to a networked folder. Kudos to Samsung on this one.

I then decided to try fax but I didn''t have much luck here because I have a VOIP system at home. I''ve tried many configurations and even tried calling Comcast for some possible answers but to no avail. Basically I can plug the fax using a standard phone cord into the my Comcast modem, my MTA has two ports. The fax will dial out but it doesn''t complete the fax. An error report will be printed out showing a No Answer error.

Overall, I am pleased. Having a network scanner and printer at home are great. If I can setup the wireless function I would be even happier so I can move this All-in-One unit to a more convenient location. But the network printer works great. The Samsung is set to sleep after 15 minutes and it wakes fast and responds to a network wake. I was able to send mulitple types of documents (PDF, Word, JPEG, internet prints) to the CLX-3175FW without a problem when attached to the network. I don''t have the USB cord plugged in. There is no need. No need to have an active computer, it will run solo. If you want to network scan, you need to have a computer online or setup a drive or folder on your network to act as a server. I plan to setup my NAS (Network Attached Storage drive) which is primarily a backup disc as a server for scanned info but so far its great.

I purchased this printer in the UK (since I live there). It is excellent. While in the USA, I purchased black toner cartridges for this printer. Be advised that ONLY toners purchased in the Euro States will work in the Euro (UK)machines. This is due to a security chip in the toner cartridge. Thus USA cartridges will only work in USA machines. Anyone want to buy 2 new (never used) black USA toner Cartridges-good price!

I got sick and tired of replacing my ink cartridge''s on my Lexmark inkjet printer at home so I went looking for a good laser colour to replace it. After an extensive search I came across this samsung printer and I was impressed with all the reviews so I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed.

I have installed this as a network printer flawlessly using the wireless NIC then wired directly into my router. I have install the drivers flawlessly on my wife''s MAC, My dual boot Vista/Xp laptop, and my home Windows 7 device. The linux one is the only one I havn''t tested, but I will in a couple months on a VM.

The Printer it''s self is small for a multi-colour laser printer and fit''s perfectly in a little cabinet whole I made. It''s a little to big for my desk but that''s to be expected as for what it is.

I have printed various maps, documents, pdf''s, and I really can''t notice too much of a difference from my ink jet other then the brightness of the colour, but your going to get that with all Laser colours so I don''t count that as a negative.

I have tested the scanner and it scans and/or copies great the only issues I have is getting the scanner to scan connected over the network. I have not been able to fully attack this problem yet (gave it about 5 minutes of my time), but this is a known problem with alot of all-in one printer''s (not just samsung) that are 64 bit (which my machine is)

Overall though I have been most impressed with this Printer, and definitly recommend over it''s HP and Lenovo counterparts. I say this from years of IT work at 17,000 + employee hospital where I''ve worked with all types of printers and computers.

First, DO NOT DOWN LOAD ANY FIRMWARE UPDATE from Samsung. They prompted me to install a firmware upgrade for a "bug" in the printer copier. There has been no issue with it. All has been working fine. Until after the install. I have been buying off-label (Green Apple brand) toner/drum cartridges which save me a bit of money (not alot). I have 2 for backup. Immediately after installing the firmware upgrade, the copier will not recognize the toner. Saying "Incompatible toner cartridge installed". And will not work. I called customer service, and first they told me to uninstall the software. I said it can not be done, as it is a firmware, installed in the copier. They transferred me to a technician, who said that it has to be done by an authorized service center, and they said that since my copier is under warranty, I can bring it to a local service center to have the older firmware version 1 reinstalled. I called the facility, and asked them TWICE if this is a service they can do. They confirmed they can. I brought the printer over and left it for 4 days. Then called them. They said I''ll need to buy a new toner with Samsung brand. I said that the whole reason why I brought it over is to have the firmware reinstalled, and they had confirmed it can be done. Then today, a Samsung representative called me, saying that they will not allow the old firmware to be installed, as they specifically said in the manual that only Samsung toners can be used in these machines. To me, this is scandalous, to tell owners to install an update to fix a "bug" when the bug is simply the fact that they want to BLOCK you from using non-Samsung toner and drums. This is not a warranty issue with defective equipment, but an issue that SAMSUNG does not want people to use aftermarket or non-samsung products. BAD,BAD,BAD,BAD..... I will not recommend any SAMSUNG products to anyone!

Normally I have some issues with office products with this high a price point, but the absolute quality of the 2"x2" stickers in this set almost ---almost!! ---falls into the "you get what you pay for" area of life. I love that these stickers call themselves squares, and they actually are squares. I don''t mind rounded edges when you know they are coming, but too often label stickers are identified as being "rectangular" when they are actually rounded. 80% of the time it makes little difference, but in certain packaging and labeling situations you really need clean lines to the edges. Sharp corners are important then. So, LOVE the sharp corners.

High marks for the fact you can use both laser and ink jet printers with little issue (tested on both, no smears or blurs). Kudos also for strong "stick-em" value. Really, nothing but good things to say. But that $$$$. You can get cheaper labels, but you will not get the same quality. If you are looking to save overhead, maybe you shouldn''t splurge here, but when your need to look you best, have that extra added edge (pun intended), having some of these on hand would be a wise decision.

These labels are much smaller than your standard mailing labels. At a size of of 2x2 you can use these labels to personalize it to your liking. With the holidays upon us I would use them as a fun way to make labels for gifts. Also if you are having a dinner party or New Year''s Eve party you can make seating cards and add the special touch of the occasion you are celebrating. An image would be such a cool idea For Christmas add a tree, Holiday dinner a snowflake New Year''s eve, a champagne glass, streamers or even a balloon.

Another fun idea, for a children''s birthday party and all those goodie bags, make it extra special for a child by placing the label on their own bag.

When the holidays are over, these labels are the perfect size to label storage boxes with all your holiday decorations. The labels are so versatile, they can be used all year to label many items around the house or office.

Want Avery Permanent Square Label (22806) Discount?

For the simple quality of being square this label seems, automatically, more elegant.

The 2" x 2" size is perfect for printing an attractive label that includes an ornament (or logo) and a few lines of text in a comfortable-sized font. I see that there is a slightly smaller size, but I''m very happy with this particular size and format.

Note that the labels are square, with square not rounded corners. Rounded corners would have been nice, too. They are white but, since they print edge-to-edge you could color them. They do take ink well and dry fast. You can start applying them almost as soon as they come out of the printer.

I was on the committee for an alumni dinner gala at my son''s old school. We used it on the clear party favor bags we had for the ladies to take home after the gala dinner. We were able to print the school logo (which is a long coat-of-arms type design) plus 2 lines of 24 point text in the school colors and still allow for an uncrowded placement. The same label was used in some shopping bags that contained prizes and they "dressed up" the wrapping very well. We also used it on the displays at the silent auction tables to indicate the name of the donor and the starting bid. Someone suggested that it could have been used as name tags for the people in charge of the auction and raffle tickets.

Since we wanted to print in color, we used the inkjet printers, but I notice that they could have been run in a laser printer as well, which is good to know.

I love the size and shape. I love that they are easy to remove from the backing, that the adhesive works well, that the corners lie flat, and that they feed into the printer smoothly and without jamming.

My only wish is that they were slightly glossy (or less flat). A little gloss effect would have made them just a little more dressy and they would have soaked up less ink. (And taken longer to dry, I realize).

However, this little objection isn''t going to keep me from getting them again next time; it isn''t going to keep the school from stocking them for other events; and it isn''t going to keep me from using the remainders to make my own custom Christmas gift tags this year.

Avery is certainly the source for a plethora of labels. This one is a favorite. As a retailer, I like a label that is big enough to put both logos and product information on that won''t curl...this one fits the bill. The print doesn''t smear or fade and the label stays put! This size is so versatile too from address labels to product descriptions on a myriad of items. The quantity is generous too so buy a pack and even with heavy use you will have labels at hand. As you can tell I really like this label and I recommend it for anyone needing a slightly larger label with permanent adhesive.

I have one of these that now has over 20,000 pages printed. It keeps going and going and going!

I use it to print black and white (of course) documents, sometimes hundreds of pages at a time. I just printed a 97 page document on legal paper that was printed in less than 4 minutes.

No, it''s not wireless (someone gave it a 1 star review because of reading comprehension), BTW if you do any volume printing you don''t want the printer to be in the next room, you need to monitor it so the papers don''t pile up too high.

I have this sitting next to my inkjet all in one, which is color and wireless, so I have all the bases covered. I find myself printing with the Brother over 90% of the time. Who needs color for most stuff? Plus, the toner never dries up!

This is my second Brother HL2230 that I buying for our office. I bought the first one a couple of months ago. We needed another printer and I went with the one I already know will do the job. We mostly use it to print shipping labels and it definitely does the job well. No issues with the printer itself what so ever. We have printed a few thousand labels so far. The only complain is that the toner is relatively expensive, but thats how they get you. It is the same with most printer manufacturers. Luckily you can buy after market toner or simply buy toner powder and refill cartridges yourself.

Highly recommended. I dont think there is any other product in the market that will beat this unit by price and quality.

I was seeking an inexpensive monochrome laser printer for some relatively light non-profit organization printing. At home I own a similar but more expensive Brother unit. After reviewing many specs and noting the fair price this one (model 2230) looked like a good choice.

I am very satisfied with the printing from the tray and the options such as the ability to save toner when this mode is set. It is fast (24 ppm claimed) and in normal printing from the tray reliable.

It is however just AWFUL if you want to print envelopes (e.g., using Microsoft Word as the program). I have only tried in on regular #10 business envelopes. In this case at best they come out wrinkled and worse case the error light comes on and it won''t print even if there is no jam. I have to power down, wait for it to "clear" itself, and try again.

So if you just want to print 8 ½" x 11" documents, you''ll be happy. But if you want to also print envelopes save yourself a lot of frustration and buy some other printer.

Want Brother HL2230 Monochrome Laser Printer (HL2230) Discount?

(COMMUNITY FORUM 04)(#1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER)I mostly print black and white (documents) and only occasionally need color. After mowing through countless inkjet cartridges that cost as much as the printer, and noticing that the color ink degrades over time if you don''t use it, I decided to buy a laser printer. Actually, it was my over-eighty year old mom who suggested this. Mom, you''re RIGHT! No smeary documents, longer lasting toner cartridges and better print quality. Mom does know best!

Installation

This printer is a breeze to install. I unpacked the box and there was the usual pictorial card describing how to remove the shipping protectors on the toner cartridge, but this is also repeated on the quick-start sheet, which is written in English. I find it''s easier to follow written instructions rather than pictures.

After you pull out the protective bands, you shake the toner cartridge and put it right back in. Then when you power up the printer (don''t plug it into the computer, yet!) a test sheet will print out.

WARNING: This unit pulls quite a bit of power upon warm-up. It actually caused my surge suppressor to blink out due to the surge in power demand, and shut off my computer. Therefore, I put the printer on a separate outlet on its own surge suppressor power strip (the computer is on a battery backup surge suppressor.) You may wish to do the same.

After the test page prints, you shut off the printer and install the driver from the supplied CD. A nice feature--the installation software will go to the internet to download later versions of the driver, something I used to have to do manually--that is, the CD might be out of date and I''d go to the Brother website to load the latest version of the driver. This installation software does that for you.

As the driver loads, it prompts you to put in the USB cable (if that''s what you are installing--you can also do network) and then turn on the unit. NO USB cable was supplied with this printer, so you''ll have to use a standard USB to printer cable of your own.

After the installation, I registered the printer and it checked for updates to the firmware.

Printing

Printing is fast and simple. If there are error conditions, the LED''s blink in various ways to alert you to the problem. There is a sticker included to place on the unit above the LED''s and I suggest you put it on the unit, as the blinking lights are explained by the sticker. (Toner might be out, paper out, etc.)

Pages

The page capacity of the toner cartridge is 1200 pages. You can buy a high yield cartridge (2,800 pages) or a drum unit which will do 12,000 pages. These range in price from under fifty to about a hundred. Aftermarket (not original Brother) compatible cartridges are even less expensive, less expensive than the average inkjet cartridge. I have not used an aftermarket cartridge, so I don''t know how well they work, but they are under twenty, so that''s pretty inexpensive.

Summary

For black and white printing, this printer may well be a better, more cost-effective printer than the average inkjet, and the cost of consumables is a lot less. If you mainly print black and white, this might be your "duty printer."

We were disappointed because the product was not collated with a rubber binding. We expected the each set would have been held together with adhesive like a lined notepad. It was nothing special and the pages easily slipped during the printing process. What was the sense of getting three part carbonless paper if you still have to print every page?167 Sets of 3 Part NCR® Paper 5909 -Straight Collated, Letter Size Carbonless Paper.

This paper is for printing and then using as a carbon copy type of paper it is not plain paper. It is like the old 3 part dot matrix printer paper or typewriter paper where you can write after you print/type and it will transfer to the other sheets as a carbon copy. If you are looking for simple, plain 3 part copy paper, this is not it. I purchased this thinking that it was and realized what it was after opening the package. Seller did not offer to exchange or refund or anything so we are keeping it as it is not worth the hassle for $27 to fight it. We will try to use it as plain paper by printing on the opposite side of the sheets but we still will have that copy feature to deal with in our paper files you know that blueish hue if you do any rubbing on the paper at all.
