Magicolor 5670EN Color Laser Save 67% off

Magicolor 5670EN Color Laser
  • High speed from first page to last: magicolor 5670EN color laser printers produce 9600 x 600 dpi-class PhotoART contone color and B&W prints at speeds up to 37 ppm and feature a monthly duty cycle of 120,000 prints.
  • Network and local connectivity: Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BaseTX), IEEE 1284 parallel and USB 2.0 interfaces connect work teams including Windows, Mac and Linux users.
  • Built-in Emperon Print System: With PostScript 3 and PCL 6 emulations, plus native XPS functionality for Windows Vista systems.
  • Exceptional Color Control: With eAIDC (enhanced Automatic Image Density Control) calibration, the magicolor 5670EN delivers consistent color accuracy page after page.
  • Broad media support up to banner size: Print on an array of paper sizes from postcard to 8.5" x 47.24" banners and on a variety of office papers.

I''ve had the 5670EN for about 4 months now and bought it to support my wife''s wedding invitation business. She typically prints 100-600 sheets per month on a variety of paper thicknesses up to 80lb cover stock. The ink jets were just killing us on cost, going through several hundred dollars a month in ink. But the Canon MX420 handled thick paper with no issues and had good quality prints. So I ordered the Konica Minolta to help save some money on printing. It arrived and was very big and heavy which was expected. I assembled everything and used the side loader to try a thicker stock. The fuser will not produce enough heat to work on thick stock such as 80lb cover (216gsm). In fact, it won''t even print well on the stated max thickness (210gsm I think), my guess is because it is not as smooth. So the manual feeder is basically worthless to us.

The reason I still am giving this printer 4 stars is it work very well and is very inexpensive for regular thickness paper. I have it on my network and all computers in the house can print to it. It cranks out 100 prints in minutes with no fading, striping or page to page variance. So we now use this printer exclusively for some types of prints on regular thickness paper, but I bought another excellent inkjet that is very cheap to operate and can do any thickness practically up to plywood. We have to do some color matching in Photoshop if a client''s job uses both printers, but it''s worth the time for the money it saves.

One other note is the replacement toner is about $570 for CMYK. This comes with starter toners which haven''t even shown their levels budge yet after a thousand prints or so. That''s the reason I didn''t return the printer when I figured out it wouldn''t do the thick paper. The starter toner is worth about what the printer sells for less return shipping.

original of 5 stars. updated to 2. ----I run a custom printing business and it took me a while to get used to this. This has so many options it took a lot of trial and error to get all of my colors just right. It also printed too bright (looked washed out), luckily you can even adjust the brightness and contrast by 15% each, so I set bright to -15%.

This prints true to color and the best color I''ve seen from a printer.

~update, starter toner lasted 3500 pages, found the sheet that said it was estimated at 6k, so seeing as i use 30% coverage (according to stats page) that''s pretty good.

--------------------------------------------

update 10-29-12: this printer isn''t worth it. one problem after another. tech support is pretty good, but don''t follow up on problems. so when the problem persists you have to wait on hold again, or if the tech person never shows up after a week you have to call again.

my first major problem was 1.5 months after having it, it started jamming. they sent a new fuser, and tech installed it. still got random jams. tech guy came out and he said it was curling the paper the wrong way, causing the jam. but to flip the paper so the natural curl of it was the other way. it doesn''t matter which way the paper is i still get random jams.

ad that to the fact the new image drums (need to be replaced after 15-30k pages depending on use) cost 2x as much as the new printer. who would do that when you can buy a new printer? i''m sticking to xerox and so far my oki printer is ok

Great output, the toner is a bit expensive, but I have been using the Konica type instead of the cheaper "compatible" type. Very fast printing and pretty much perfect color output. The toner and processing units are extremely easy to replace and I haven''t had any issues. The waste container seems to get full pretty fast, but they can be emptied out and a new one is pretty cheap (I rotate between three of them). So if you want some professional looking printouts, this is a good printer, I have had it for about 7 months and we have several people that use it all day long and it still seems to be a pretty solid printer.

Brother QL-1050 Wide Format PC Label Printer Save 25% off

Brother QL-1050 Wide Format PC Label Printer
  • Four-inch wide print head
  • Prints up to 66 labels per minute (for standard, four-line address labels)
  • 300 dpi resolution
  • Windows and Mac USB interface
  • Serial interface for ESC/P and ASCII input

This printer absolutely WILL print labels for UPS, Post Office, and FedEx. I have printed dozens of shipping labels for those carriers, and they come out perfectly and with high resolution. I print from my fedex.com and ups.com accounts, and US Postal shipping labels from the Endicia application on my computer. Here''s how:

1. I use the Brother 4" x 100ft Continuous Length Paper roll (DK2243), so the printer will automatically cut off the label exactly where the image ends (this also allows me to add additions like "FRAGILE" or "RMA #" below the carrier''s label image).

2. When the label is ready to print (from FedEx, UPS or Endicia), instead of sending it to the printer I save it as a pdf file, and then open the pdf in Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) [note: rotate the image sideways and enlarge to full screen for best results].

3. In the printer''s P-Touch Editor application, I select "Insert > Picture > Screen Capture...", which takes me back to Adobe Reader, and lets me select an area of the label image to capture.

4. The captured image then appears in the P-Touch app; I select print and it prints out the label.

Granted it takes an extra step, but it has the advantages of a) letting you save the label (pdf file) in case of mis-print you can easily print another, and FOR MAC USERS: b) it lets you print labels from UPS and FedEx on a Mac neither ups.com or fedex.com currently support direct printing on a Mac.

I also print all sorts of other labels, and the continuous roll lets me print the exact size I want, with no waste. The P-Touch Editior has a fairly versatile drawing program, so you can design labels with custom graphics/fonts, and imported images, for many uses.

This printer is built like a tank very high-quality construction. Nothing at all like the light flimsy Dymo printers.

Highly recommended

This product appears to work well, and P-touch editor, which came free with the printer, is an easily accessible and understandable program used in conjunction with the printer. The issue I have, however, is that it requires proprietary labels made by Brother, and will not accept any other labels. This in particular was an issue for me, as the company I work for requires pre-printed labels (in color). Brother does not pre-print labels, and this is not a color label printer. For the price, it seems to be an excellent machine, and so long as you do not need pre-printed labels or, of course, color, and don''t mind purchasing labels solely from Brother, than this printer (which is the cheapest label printer I could find that was capable of printing on 4" wide labels) will likely be all you need.

The label printer has been a wonderful time saver. We have 2 and they are connected to our computer system and we can print labels with the click of our mouse! The only issue that I have found is in coordination with our program, long names are cut off of the label. Other than that, I am completely pleased. Our small business has saved time and heart-ache no longer dealing with envelope printers.

This is a quality label printer that I use to print labels for medication containers. I have stored all the templates for the different drugs and it is easy to simple add the information for each person and print. It is much better than the dymo that I also have used.

I highly recommend this label printer and would buy it again if given a choice.

I had been using an HP 2500 Color Laser printer (original price, close to $1,500) since early 2003. I am retired, and it had been loaned to me in exchange for some informal consulting to a project which I had helped to set up prior to retiring. The 2500 was noisy, and of late has presented issues with paper handling and jamming. The added additional paper tray stopped feeding paper a few years ago, so I have had to load paper in the main chute which sticks way out from the printer when it is open. So, although the 2500 printed well, and I was under no pressure to return it to its owner, I was ripe for a replacement, and I had been watching the 2605dn because I am generally satisfied with HP printers, and because I very much wanted the automatic 2-side printing. A week or so ago, HP offered an in-house half-price promotion, meaning that I bought the 2605dn for $250 with FREE SHIPPING!

I am pleased to report that it has lived up to my expectations. Print quality is excellent, at least to my untrained eye. Color photos print overly saturated, but that was also the case with the 2500, and I have HP inkjet printers for photos anyway. But, it is oh so quiet, and the double-sided printing worked from the start (select in the print dialog box). And, apparently faster than the 2500, though I did not time it. Certainly, the first page prints much faster from a cold start. So, all-in-all I am a happy camper with this printer. BTW, ~2000-2500 sheet print capacity cartridges are included, so no need to order toner cartridges as with some competitive brands. One more thing: the Ethernet ports on my Linksys router were already filled, one with the existing 2500, so I connected the 2605dn directly to my iMac through its USB port and turned on Printer Sharing in the Mac. Printed flawlessly on the first attempt, and also handled print jobs sent from other computers on my home network via the Mac. Nicely engineered, HP!

The only con is that the lengthy instruction/user manual is sent on the enclosed CD-ROM, but, then again, I rarely consult the manual after I have a printer or computer up and running. So, trees have been saved (though photons have been rudely disturbed!).

I would recommend this product without reservation.

I''ve been putting this purchase off for a few years now, but the price of these two labeling machines was to much to resist. I fact that I can print a nice clean and professional looking label for my files and parts box''s is worth the cost. The time savings is great too. I was a little confused in trying to get the extra cartridges for the small machine because the site wasn''t real specific on what label tape i should use but I figured it out after the second try.

Brother MFC-7840W Laser Multifunction Center

  • 35-page automatic document feeder makes copying, faxing and scanning multiple pages easy
  • Measures 21.7 x 20.1 x 20.5 inches (WxDxH)

I spent about a week researching for just the right multi-function printer for my needs. I own a small business with about 30 employees so I needed more than an inkjet but didn''t require a ''corporate'' $1000+ version either. I needed fax, scan, copy, and print capability with laser printing and built-in wireless capability. Suprisingly, there are not that many printers on the market that can give you all of these in one package. Originally I was going to purchase the Brother''s MFC-8870 for around $500 which all the reviews on the internet recommend, but I found this while browsing around and realized that it had just come out a few weeks ago. Although there were no reviews out yet for this new printer, it was considerably less expensive than the 8870 and the only thing I seemed to be losing was auto-duplexing so I made the purchase. It took about 15 minutes total for me to set up an ad-hoc wireless printer setup and everything works great. The scans are nice, the printing is very crisp and clear even in very small fonts. The only thing I haven''t tried yet is the fax which I won''t be using much. I really can''t say anything bad about this product. Sure it would be nice to have a legal-size flatbed, auto-duplex, and 64mb memory (instead of the default 32mb) but for the money this can''t be beat. Overall, this seems to be a really great product at a great price. I highly recommend this if you need a 4-in-1 with wireless capability. Definitely the best on the market for this niche.

I replaced my Brother MFC 7420 with this MFC-7840 and am very happy with the upgrade. It does everything I need and is small and quiet in my small office. It has a straight paper passthrough for envelopes, which works great. Read below for a comparison to other similar models.

I''ve had a Brother MFC-7240 for 2 or 3 years when the fuser went out last week. A new fuser is $150 + $75-100 to install, so needless to say, I decided to buy a new all-in-one machine. My Konica Minolta 2430DL color laser printer also conked out at the same time and I investigated replacing both with a color laser AIO. After not having much luck finding one of those that could easily print envelopes, I decided to stick with two different machines. In retrospect, I''m glad I did it''s good to have two printers around to back each other up just in case. (If you''ve got really light duty needs, consider the Samsung CLX-3160FN, which I came across in during this first shop. It''s dirt cheap for a color laser AOI. Very small and very quiet, but not solid enough for a small office load.)

After reading up on monochrome laser AOIs for much too long, I narrowed my choices down to about a dozen in the $200-$500 range. I refuse to buy something I can''t see and play around with first, so I went shopping at local stores to see the models I chose in action. I went to Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax. Tried for Circuit City and Best Buy also, but believe it or not, they don''t carry ANY monochrome laser AIO machines in their stores only on-line. A manual feed and envelope printing are a must for my use, and reviews I read were conflicting, so I took a big stack of envelopes to test the machines out myself. I also took my own originals (a purchase order and envelope both with various sizes of text and graphics) so I could compare apples to apples.

Most machines I tested had decent quality copying. There were differences, but all were acceptable for b&w general office work. Of course, copying was the only feature I could really test at the store. They all warmed up quickly and most were quiet enough. Here''s what I found...

Brother MFC-8460 is too loud, big and imposing for my small office and took a little longer to warm up.

Canon 4270 has duplexing, which I was in the market for, but a funky half-tray for paper that was hard to load and looked like it could have problems down the road. Other than that, I liked it a lot (my second choice). Printed envelopes well and looked stylish.

Canon 4150 printed the envelope crooked and the coverage was too heavy and "grayed" the white envelope. I imagine this might be improved when changing settings from the print software to adjust for the thicker envelope paper.

HP1522NF printed the envelope uncrinkled, but it made a LOT of noise curling around the paper feed, which worried me. It also "grayed" the white envelope without being able to select a "thick paper" option.

HP M2727 did not print the envelope well at all.

Samsung SCX-4725fn has an easy manual feed, but toner on my graphics flaked off the envelope. It copied very quickly and quietly.

Brother MFC-7840w and MFC-7440n are pretty much the same except the they are different colors and the 7840 is wireless and better for networking. They both have backs that open so labels and envelopes can pass straight through and not wrinkle or curl at all.

I ended up with the Brother MFC-7840W from OfficeMax for $299.00. (It was $249 at Staples and Office Depot with a mail-in rebate it''s a long story why I couldn''t get back to one of them and save the $50.) Not only did I like this machine best in my test, but I was happy with my old MFC-7420 and hope this updated version will treat me as well. The one thing I really wish the 7840 had that is does not, is duplex printing. If it had that, it would be the perfect machine.

I did a USB installation to Windows XP, which was simple and took about 45 minutes, but unfortunately the copier and scanner did not work. I called tech support and got through quickly. They couldn''t help me, but quickly bumped me up to the next level of tech support. This next level was actually staffed with a real engineer who had the machine in the same room with him. After a few diagnostics he had me run, he determined that the logic board was defective and volunteered to send me a new one. I opted to return it to OfficeMax, who exchanged it with no problem.

I just plugged the new machine in and didn''t reinstall the software. Now everything works perfectly and I''m very happy with this machine.

This is a very nice printer and I agree with the other reviewers positive feedback. But there is one problem I have found for those who print forms and envelopes via the manual feeder. When the printer is in sleep mode and you put a piece of paper in the manual feeder the printer wakes up and does a small grab of the paper. Unfortunately this small grab puts the paper off center so if you are printing on form paper it is a real nuisance. A solution may be to wake it up first by printing something else, then put in your form paper and print before it goes to sleep again, but again not the best solution. Also the lack of ability to put multiple envelopes in the manual feeder I find is a weakness. All my older LaserJets could at least handle 5-6 envelopes in the manual feeder. After reading many reviews though I find that trying to find a MFP that can handle envelopes is a major problem in itself and this printer is no different. I also noticed the toner that came with the printer did not last for nearly as long as advertised, it started showing toner low very very soon!

Want Brother MFC-7840W Laser Multifunction Center Discount?

I was looking for a laser multifunction device with network capability that I could use to print from my laptop anywhere in the house. A lot of reviews seemed to point to the Brother MFCs as the best overall brand for laser monochrome devices. The only problem was that there were a LOT of different models to choose from just going to the Brother website to do some comparison shopping made my head spin.

The MFC-7840W is a recently introduced model which has seemed to get good reviews across the board. A major plus is that it has both wireless and wired network capabilities. I took the plunge and purchased this model. Since I already had a wireless router to plug it into, I didn''t need to use the wireless capabilities, but it seemed to be a nice option for future flexibility. The Ethernet connection was easy to set up and worked the first time I tried printing from my laptop.

I''ve been very pleased with the quality and feature set of the MFC-7840W. Not only does it print high quality output, but it has clearly-labeled buttons for scan, fax, and copy, which makes it a breeze to use any of these functions. Plus, the device is relatively light and doesn''t have a very large footprint, so it fits easily on top of a small file cabinet. High marks overall.

As long as you don''t need color printing, this might be the perfect solution to your Mac-based home or small office needs! I wanted to be able to scan and fax from across the network from iMac and Macbook, but was worried about the setup.. For both OSX 10.4 and 10.5 the setup was as easy as installing the CD and clicking a button. The printing and scanning worked automatically right out of the box across the network (hard-wired).

I have not yet tried faxing across the network, but the scanning works great and automatically detects the computers on the network that are installed with the brother software. You can scan from either the buttons on the MFC, or initiate the scan/copy operation from the computer on the network.

As is typical, the documentation is incomplete and inaccurate in many places, but since everything worked right out of the box, it wasn''t a big deal.

If you scan a document to file, it will stick it in your "Pictures" folder by default. to change the default scanning settings, you will notice a little icon that gets put up on the top right of your screen next to your clock. Click here to adjust preferences. (not in the documentation!)

Lexmark X1185 Color All-in-One Printer

  • Black and color host-based copying; black and color PC fax
  • Scan, edit, print, and manage images with included software
  • USB interface, PC and Mac compatible

The best thing about this all in one is the price (hence the 2 stars). Its really affordable compared to other brands out there. However the price isn''t the only thing about this product thats cheap. ;)

If you are looking for a copier/scanner/fax machine in one than you''ve hit the jackpot. It''s really simple to switch back and forth, and provides a really high quality copy/scan. Plus the photo editing program isn''t too bad. You can add text, crop, resize (the basic photo editing stuff).

But the bad outweighs the good....the printer portion of this all in one is soooo frustrating. The ink cartridges for the lexmark printers are the worst ever! They dry out really quickly (wiping it with a dampened paper towel helps), and don''t last long at all. Plus if you like to save a penny and wish to use the "refillable ink", your out of luck because the cartriges are impossible to refill (the little hole is too tiny to fit the refill needle in) and you are stuck paying 20-30 bucks a piece for the cartridges every time you turn around.

Plus I think something on mine broke (yah who would have guessed?) because it doesnt pull the pages through properly, it pulls them crooked \\

Do a search of the item product number Hammermill 107681 and you will find elsewhere that this is three-hole punched paper. The picture and description are wrong. A description at another site says this paper is acid-free, which is good, if you want 3 holes in the paper.

It is 24 pound but it is 98 Brightness. A very shiny, thin paper, good for graphics as stated on another site.

The ream I received was taped shut on both ends with transparent tape, and seemed to have less than a full ream. Some of the pages were curled or wrinkled. I returned the Hammermill 107681 paper and ordered other Hammermill laser paper.

Personally I would recommend this paper just make sure you get the holes on the correct side of the printer!

Have had the 5130 CDN for 13 months now. The consumables are incredibly expensive and only available from Dell. We are constantly having to replace toner, the toner waste container, fuser, etc. They are all high-priced from Dell.

One month out of warranty the printer quit with an error that it needed a new belt unit. Ordered the belt unit (only available from Dell for $375.00) and installed it. At power up it gave us an 006-370 error and said to call for support.

Called for support and wasted a ridiculous amount of time on hold then being transferred to different people.

Finally spoke to a tech support person who ultimately told me that since the printer wasn''t under warranty any longer I''d have to order a "Ross Assembly"/print head and have the MCU/ESS board replaced. He also told me I''d have to hire a technician to install these parts as they are not something a customer can do. And he said that I could NOT pay to order the parts from Dell or have a Dell technician do the work, because the printer is out of warranty.

I spoke to his supervisor who treated me like an idiot and told me repeatedly that if I had just paid the extra money for the extended warranty I wouldn''t have to worry about arranging to get the printer fixed on my own.

Then I received the following email from Dell:

"The Dell part c399t is not available for sale from Dell as it is recommended to not attempt to replace it. Several parts houses do have it available (found by internet searching Dell C399T), best price for the part only we found is $795.00. This has the potential to be a $1000 repair. The recommended choice would be to replace the printer. If you need anything else please let me know."

So a 13 month old printer that Dell advertises as providing "Superb Performance" and as an "Exceptional Long Term Value" will cost more than its purchase price to repair and they recommend just replacing it. WHAT???

Our university spends literally hundreds of thousands of dollars with Dell every year and this is the "service" they provide.

Dell clearly does not stand behind the products they sell and it seems clear that unless you buy the extended warranty your equipement will fail within days of when the one year warranty expires.

So steer clear of Dell products entirely, especially this printer.

It does a lot, it does it quickly, it prints from just about anything with a microchip, and it''s easy to set up. The only disadvantage to this beast is that it takes up a lot of space. We use the printer primarily from OSX, but it works from Windows too, and I was even able to print from a Tandy WP-2, an eight bit computer from 1989 that connected directly to the printer''s parallel port.

It wakes from sleep faster than Lexmark printers do, in my experience, and the print looks better than a Xerox Phaser. My only complaint is with the form factor -the printer is vast, and the auxiliary paper tray is on the side, so in addition to finding the linear feet for the printer itself, you need to leave a couple of extra feet to the right if you plan to print on letterhead or transparencies (yes, you can put them in the regular printer tray as an alternative, but it would be nice to use the auxiliary tray since Dell was nice enough to build one in there).

HP DeskJet 350CBI Color Portable Printer

HP DeskJet 350CBI Color Portable Printer
  • 600 x 300 dpi color images using photo paper
  • USB and Mac serial interfaces
  • High-volume ink cartridges
  • 30-page portable sheet feeder for hands-free printing
  • Built-in recharging NiHM battery

The only problem that I have is trying to find the Infra Red device and the batteries that should come with it anyways. $... is a lot of money for a little printer that you have to change the ink cartrige to print color. No problems with it yet. Bob

I bought this printer with the "kit" since it was the only one that actually came with a battery. The paper feeder is clumsy, especially when compared to a Canon.

I ran into soem trouble installing it with Windows XP. I tried using the IR port and the HP 350 driver that came with XP (the driver on the supplied CD-ROM will NOT work with XP). It printed out as if it was a double image of everything. I called HP (after having sent one printer back for a similar problem) and after some experimentation, they suggested I tried using the HP 320 driver. That did the trick, no more problems. But, the printer is only a few days old.....

A year ago my company bought 300 of these printers. Since then, HP has had to replace 30% of the sheet feeders -an obvious design flaw. Luckily they are still paying for those out of warranty. We also have had to send more than 20% of them back to HP for repair -flashing ink cartridge light (even on fresh cartridge), won''t print. HP is NOT paying for these now. Instead, they charge us [price](+ shipping) for each repair, plus downtime. We are going to try a Canon printer next. Most everything else HP makes, including the fabulous Jornada''s our reps use, are good quality. But these Deskjet 350s obviously have serious design flaws. HP won''t step up to the plate and help with repairs; so here is my NEGATIVE review.

Avery Postcards for Inkjet Printers (3263) Save 28% off

Avery Postcards for Inkjet Printers, 5.5 x 4.25 Inches, White, Pack of 60
  • Post cards
  • Perfect for creating postcards for moving or birth announcements
  • Also great for creating decorative recipe cards or flash cards for kids
  • You can print four post cards on every sheet
  • Simply use any greeting card software or other creative publishing software program

This product was quite a disappointment. Avery markets this as heavyweight postcard stock, but it is no such thing. Even two pieces held together would not equal an average postcard. I suppose that I can forgive the perforated edge, but it nevertheless gives the cards a decidely low-budget look.

Caveat Emptor.

I love this paper. It was so great to just put it in the printer and let it do its thing.

I''ve used other postcard forms and they worked fine. Maybe it''s the weight of the paper on this one, but it wouldn''t feed through my printer''s feed AT ALL. Okay, one sheet fed through. I feel like I just threw that money away, and it was going to be for marketing postcards for my book. Doesn''t work on Brother multifunction units. Don''t spend the money.

Samsung SCX-4500 Monochrome Laser Multifunction Printer

Samsung SCX-4500 Monochrome Laser Multifunction Printer
  • Stylish multi-function device prints, copies, and scans
  • Prints and copies at a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi for crisp text
  • High-quality scanning at 4800 x 4800 dpi
  • Ultra quiet; emits less than 45 decibels of sound when in operation
  • Device measures 13 x 6.5 x 15.5-inches (WxHxD)

This printer is smaller than I thought. It is about the size of a small desktop PC. It is rather "cool" looking printer. If you are trying to make a fashion statement with your printer, then this printer does its job.

Its small size comes with one noticeable compromise: a small paper tray that can only hold 75-100 sheets. It is not built to be a large volume printer and even infrequent use may result in filling the paper tray more than one desires. It can, however, print at a fast speed and at a good quality (600 dpi) resolution. The copier function is easy to use (press the copy button) and works reasonably well, and is good for low volume copying. I had no problems copying a 20 page document and it processed each copy in less than 5 seconds. The copy quality was on par with standard office copy machines.

The refill tray is expensive (about $70) and only prints about 2000 pages. That comes to around 3.5 cents per page. That is somewhat high.

One thing of note, this printer does not have a fax capability. So it is not all-in-one laser printer.

I recommend this printer to those who need a reasonably good laser printer/copier in a small form factor. If you need a high volume printing/copying machine which prints at a low print/cent ratio, then I would look elsewhere.

PROS:

-Text is crisp

-Printer/Scanner is super quiet

-Light, and relatively small foot print

-Eye candy. It''s no eyesore like most MFPs.

CONS:

-No fax.

-No duplex printing.

-No wireless.

-No envelope printing support

-Only comes with a 1000 page "starter" toner cartridge. Replacement cartridges yield 2000 pages.

OTHER:

At $300, I would have never purchased this printer. $250 made it slightly more bearable. I knew of all aforementioned disadvantages/cons before buying, but still decided it was a worthwhile investment. I just listed them for the curious.

Wireless capability and maybe a duplex add-on would be nice, though, and probably expected in this price range.

MAC Users:

Download the latest drivers/applications from Samsung''s website, if you want the "scan-to-file" button to work.

I bought this model about two weeks ago and heavily using it since than. Shortly, I''m happy with it. Here are the details :

The Good :

-Sleak, stylish design for people who are tired of low material quality and same beige/gray looks

-Very quiet operation

The Bad :

-Price. It is $300 right now and its qualifications don''t worth the tag. Printers in that price level have wireless and fax capability (but not the looks, well it''s a trade off in this case)

-Limited paper storage

-Not really small. (still smaller than most, but it is not really a compact printer as I assumed).

As I noted, overall I''m happy with the printer as I paid for the looks. One other thing which bothered me is, it doesn''t come with connection cable. After paying premium buck, I would expect to get the cable with the printer.

IT''S GORGEOUS. This has got to be the most attractive, stylish printer ever manufactured. Piano gloss black. Subtle blue lights glow from underneath the black glass to count copies, indicate functions, etc. The buttons ARE the blue lights, you just touch the glass to activate the button. Slick. It makes my office desk look very very sharp.

IT''S QUIET. The thing just issues a whisper and a whoosh and out shoots the print job. I actually ENJOY hearing it print. It emits soothing, gentle chime-like sounds when it boots up, shuts down, finishes a job, and so forth.

IT''S FAST. It takes a few seconds to warm up on the first page, then the pages just fly out.

IT''S COMPACT. The footprint is barely larger than the 8.5 x 11 paper it uses. Just a few inches tall.

IT''S EASY TO LOAD PAPER. It''s got a physical button (the only physical button) you push to kick out the tray.

IT''S RELIABLE. I haven''t had a single issue so far. Out of the box, plug it up, follow the quick start/initialization steps, install the software and good to go ever since, 100%. Very easy/intuitive so far. Not a single paper jam.

AND I STOLE IT. My local Best Buy was dumping it NIB for about $140. [ BB was actually asking much more for the exact same model withOUT the scanner, since that one wasn''t discounted to clear. Crazy, huh? ] Then I had a standing BB coupon for another $20 off. Plus it kicked me over for my quarterly BB reward.

Not SO bad, really, considering all the positives.

I really wish it could do color.

It doesn''t fax.

It looks like cost per page ain''t gonna be so nice.

I got it cheap, but at the going street price, you''re paying a lot for the look of the thing.

The toner cartridge provided in the box is intentionally only half full.

They didn''t include the USB cable in the box.

It doesn''t hold much over 70 sheets of paper.

The part of the scanner software that converts scans to PDF has a bug in it. (It won''t crop the entire glass scan.) I had to download some TWAIN-compliant shareware (called SoftiPDF) to use instead. The Softi software automatically recognized the printer.

The scanhead lets out a horrid groan about half way through the pass.

The print job just flops out on the desk or floor unless you slip in the flimsy paper tray/catch, which is in the way and/or gets knocked off if you leave it in. So I keep it in a drawer and slide it in before every job then put it away again when done.

--->---

I''ll let you know when I have to cough it up for the first replacement toner cartridge. When I looked a while back, $50 to $70 was the going rate. Hopefully, I''ll be able to find a cheaper, recharged one by the time I need it.

If you want a stylish look, can do without color print ... and you can live with the price ... look no further, this is your printer.

Samsung SCX-4500 Monochrome Laser Multifunction Printer

I love this printer! Everytime I use it, I look at it & smile. I am a writer & a teacher & have used a Samsung basic b&w laser printer for years. I bought it for after a and put a new cartridge in every six months. I had a separate Visioneer scanner and an Epson MF printer with copy & fax capability. All serviceable technology but so "blah & functional looking."

Last year, I replaced my old computer with a HP Pavillion Slimline Desktop with a Pocket Media Drive; recycled my scanner & Samsung & Epson Printer and purchased this Smasung SCX 4500.( I knew what I wanted & am a patient, crafty shopper so I pounced when the price was right & bought it for .!) And I am thrilled!! They are both elegant & highly functionally. The Pocket Media drive is a joy and the printer is so QUIET...SO QUIET!! It has this soft little woosh sound when it is doing its thing.

If your desk is in a family area or bedroom nook, this is tecnology you can enjoy displaying. This is not a workhorse machine but there are plenty of those on the market. The small 100 sheet paper tray is a small trade off for the advantages.

I am a 65+ senior woman, who has owned computers since the early 1980''s. I am not a notebook person but do appreciate all the mobility featues of small, lightweight, smart looking gadgets. This printer has a small footprint, is lightweight and great looking!

Note: I no longer use a fax as I scan & e-mail documents.

24lb. Bond, so it''s about as thick as heavy writing paper.

Excellent quality, and arrived in two days. Very bright white, Matte finish.

I have several uses for it, other than actually as inkjet paper, and for about $21 (including shipping) for a 150ft x 3ft roll, it is by far the best deal on basic roll paper that I''ve seen.

Paper seems good but it is now 21 lb and not 24 lb. The other review was 3 years ago so it has probably changed since then. Will use this mainly for kids to draw and do arts and crafts so it is still fine for me. In the Amazon specs it does not mention it, but when you look it up on the HP website, it does give the weight.

I occasionally sell items on ebay and it is nice to use this paper roll to provide a perfectly smooth white backdrop for product photographs. The paper is thick enough that it is not prone to wrinkling and has a smooth, high quality finish. Highly recommended!

HP Premium Plus Photo Paper, 4 x 6 Inch, 100 Sheets
  • Bright white photo paper
  • High gloss finish
  • Convenient 4-by-6-inch size with perforated tab
  • 11.5 mil thickness
  • 280g/m2 density

When it comes to photo printing, paper is everything. To bring out the best photo capabilities in a printer, the right paper is needed.

HP Premium Plus is a very thick and heavyweight photo paper. The photos come out beautifully without smudging and smearing. There is a coating on the backside of the paper that HP touts would prevent photos from sticking, which is always a concern of mine. So far, we''ve stacked some photos and haven''t any problems with sticking. The photos do feel a little tacky, which they always seem to feel regardless of photo paper used. I do think it''s less sticky than I''ve sometimes experienced with other photo papers.

The tab feature makes it easy to have a place to hold and label photos. It doesn''t tear cleanly enough for my tastes, but perforated tabs never do. I just cut with my paper cutter.

This is a nice quality paper. I will buy it again in the future.

_____________________________

UPDATE: I brought out the photos to show my mother-in-law how nicely the photos print out of a printer with the right kind of paper. My one caveat to her was that I could never find photo paper that isn''t tacky when printed on. Sometimes, the photos even stick together when placed in a pile. I just never touch the surface where the picture is because I don''t like the sensation. Well, was I surprised that the photos were not sticky at all. They felt like regular photos printed at the store. Whoa! That is a first. I just needed to let them dry completely. I thought they were dry before, but apparently not. Other photo papers really stay tacky forever, as I have tried touching them days later. This is the best. I''ll be buying it from now on.

Oh, and my mother-in-law showed me photos she printed out on her photo paper and there is a huge difference. The photos on HP photo paper look like real photos from the store, no pixelation at all.

UPDATE: I thought what I had was good, but I am getting even more stunning results from my Epson WorkForce 630 Color Inkjet All-in-One (C11CB07201) (my previous one was a Brother MFC-420CN Color Inkjet Network Multifunction). The details pop. I absolutely cannot tell this photo from the ones Snapfish sends me. Actually, I think these are better! Ink dries so quickly, it''s touchable straight from the printer. If you are not getting good results, try a different printer. After seeing what an excellent printer can do with this paper, I am raising my review to five stars.

This is one of the best quality photo paper I purchase because of the image quality and fade resistance. For the best adhesion of the printed color, it is best to let it dry at least a couple of hours before placing in your photo album.

Good product at a reasonable price. The paper is dated 2003 but should work OK. I did notice that it did not have the arrows on the back like newer ones do to help in loading the paper correctly into the paper tray. This is important as the paper does have tabs on one end. Just remember that the tabless end feeds first. The first couple of prints I got it backwards.

Want HP Premium Plus Photo Paper (Q5431A) Discount?

The photos looks great no, GREAT, but they''re tacky/sticky. I''ve been reading widely on the web and I''m not sure if that''s a fuction of the printer that I''m using or the paper.

I use a CHEAP HP Deskjet 3940 with this paper so I really shouldn''t complain.

I read somewhere that if HP uses different ink technology then the photos would be waterproof and would dry faster.

So all that to say that the paper is heavy and feels good in the hand. The appearance of the photos even from an "inferior" printer are FANTASTIC. But the sticky, slow-to-dry photos? I don''t know if that''s really the paper''s fault!
