I''ve returned the HP375b printer for this one, and what an amazing printer. No more going to a photo lab or uploading to online photo labs, this 6 color ink printer produces stunning pictures everytime. I got a battery with this printer, and it is amazing how convenient it is to just take the printer and the camera whereever I want to be, then just sit and print. As they''ve indicated, the pictures are smudge and waterproof, making it easier to handle right after printing them. The 6 color ink cartridge is a single unit, and it is a cinch to change them when needed.

The printer has a USB port in the back that can be used to connect to a PC or other USB devices for backup or from which to read the pictures to print. I''ve never had the chance to backup the pictures from memory cards to a CD-writer, as my memory cards are at least 1GB each and have found the CD writers to be past its time. However, the printer did not have any problem reading from other USB flash cards or from my 60Gig portable hard drive. A support to write to a DVD writer would be a plus with possibly from next firmware release of this printer.

Only inconvenient thing the others may find is that the Pict Bridge connection is located on the back of the printer, rather than the front, where it is more convenient to handle the wires. I, however, found that it is more convenient to just take the memory card out of the camera and plug it into the printer cardreader.

I don''t like wires, and all my devices, including my laptops, are portable, so this printer is a great addition to my overall system. This is a must have item if you love taking pictures, and a battery is a must have accessory.

I am an avid photographer who always and I guess still prefer to use film However, come to modern age, the digital medium has come a long way and in most cases replaced film in many aspects.

After buying my 7.1 Canon G6, I wanted to have something to print 4x6''s on just as I would have in the lab. I''m not all about keeping them on a disc and seeing it in my monitor. There''s something about holding the art in your hand and easily showing it to someone. Well, I sought to buy a printer to do only thatJob specific.

After reading various reviews, the Epson Picturemate Deluxe as well as it''s counterpart, the standard Picturemate (without the viewer)seemed to top most categories. I bought the deluxe version and was absolutely impressed.

This is really a great printer. I actually used it without connecting to the pc and it works like a charm. It does tend to cut more of the top and bottom than I would like, but that''s a 4x6 for ya. My camera takes great pics and it''s really nice to see all that resolution come to life.

I don''t have the battery for it, but will get it soon. I might want to take this baby with me on a trip. The viewer is great and it allows you to crop your image. So if your pic is being cut too much or more than you''d like, you can select crop and move it to allow more of the top or bottom. It also allows zooming which turned out great on many of my pics. Though, I did notice some degredation the more zoomed in I was which is understandable.

I still love film, but this digital business is quite the competitor, especially when your prints look like they came from a lab.

Another great thing Epson came up with is to sell the ink with the glossy paper. It high quality paper (100 sheets)and will last you about the length of the supply of ink. For me, it''s actually made 130 prints on one cartridge, though I think that''s unusual. I had to go buy the paper which was rather expensive, about 17 bucks for the same 4x6. Oh well...

My wife had been nagging me to print out the thousands of digital pictures I have taken, so I figured I try this little thing out. I have a large format Epson as well as a couple of HP photosmarts, but as everyone who prints knows, it is a real hassle to fire them up and get prints. This little gadget easily and quickly makes 4x6''s better than I have ever seen, including the local photolab. Bright, clear, sharp, and glossy. Unlike the previous reviewer, I have had no problem printing right from my 1 gig sd card.

July 14, 2005: I was very excited about purchasing this printer for my 26,000 photo collection shot with my Canon 10D & 20D, however the unit Amazon shipped me had a bad yellow print head. I ran through all the manufacturer steps to clean the print heads but to no avail. I also got a pack of paper/ink and tried the other ink cartridge. Still no luck. 20 sheets of nozzle tests and no yellow after numerous head cleanings. The pictures I did print were very sharp and the paper had a nice shine but because of bad yellow print head, they were all bluish purple in appearance. Yuck! I have packed it up and will be shipping it back to Amazon for a replacement. I will report back if I get a working unit when Amazon sends out the replacement unit.

July 19, 2005: I sent back the unit on July 15, 2005 via an Amazon directed UPS pickup and they are now showing they have received the defective unit and shipping next day saver the replacement unit at no cost. It''s nice they are shipping a new unit next day but they could have used a faster shipping method to retrieve it. I am a Prime member.

July 20, 2005: The replacement printer is here! I immediately unboxed it and ran the nozzle print test. All 6 colors showed up. I was happy! Then I hooked it up to my Mac that had the previous printer driver install and became frustrated. It would not print and claimed it couldn''t communicate with the printer. I tried two different USB cables (the printer does not come with one). Both failed. ARGH! I was seriously scratching my head wondering if I got another bum printer. Then I said "What the heck" and uninstalled the printer drivers and reinstalled them. Walla! Working PictureMate and boy does it work! The print outs are beautiful whether from iPhoto or Photoshop. So much nicer than the ink jet 4x6s from my Canon S900 using the special high end Canon Photo Pro Glossy -much cheaper too. I printed out 20 photos which took about 30 minutes (its not a speed demon) and compared them to photolab prints of the same photos. They compare nicely if not better. The paper feels firm and the colors are bright.

All in all, I feel satisfied with my purchase now that I have a working unit. Amazon handled the return of the defective printer in a timely manner even though I was a little impatient for my new camera toy. For some reason I cannot change the "Star" rating of my review. I would now bring it up to 5. This is a recommended purchase.

The Canon MX-860 is an all-in-one printer designed for home or small business. The printing is fast, sharp and clear. The auto-document feeder scans both sides of the page, a tremendous time saver when you work with two-sided originals. Couple that with duplex-printing and it''s trivial to reproduce two-sided forms and documents. The network connectivity also works well...in the six months I''ve had the printer, it''s operated flawlessly in a mixed Mac/Windows environment on both wireless and wired networks.

Let''s look at the MX-860 on a piece-by-piece basis ...

Printing

The Canon MX-860 uses a set of five ink cartridges for printing. Two of the cartridges are black, with the other three being the typical Magenta/Cyan/Yellow set. The printed output is easily sharp enough to be used for business letters; it almost rivals laser printers in quality. To save paper, the printer has built-in duplexing. I haven''t measured it, but single-sided printing speed is quite good...I suspect that the 38 pound weight of the printer is due to some good size motors pulling the paper and moving the printhead around. Printing in duplex mode is quite a bit slower. To avoid smearing, the printer waits for the first-side to dry before printing the second side.

Photographs have good tonal gradation and overall appearance, however they don''t equal those from a high-end printer that''s specifically designed to print photographs. The difference, though, is slight and everybody has liked the prints that I''ve made. The printer has the usual slots on the front to allow you to insert your camera''s memory cards.

Scanning

Whoopee! Duplex scanning! Have you ever tried to scan a stack of two sided pages? And get them merged into one file in the right order? I tried. Once. Then I went out and paid $400 for a dedicated scanner (the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510). With duplex scanning capability on the MX-860, I wouldn''t have needed to do that. You put the papers in the feeder, tell the printer that it''s a two-sided original and push the button.

Faxing

Outgoing faxing works fine. The faxes seem to get there. Originally, the designers of the fax system missed an extremely important feature...you couldn''t specify the number of rings before the fax machine answered. Without that ability, it was almost impossible for the machine to peacefully co-exist with your phone service in a single line household. This problem was fixed by a firmware update and current purchasers can set the number of rings before pick-up. Unfortunately, Canon hasn''t posted the new firmware, so owners of older machines are stuck...be careful if you buy one used. +1 brownie point for recognizing and fixing the problem. -2 for not making it available... :>(

Networking and Setup

I had no problems getting both the wireless and wired network up and running. The setup is simple and straight forward. You''ll need a USB cable to get the wireless network configured. It may be possible to wirelessly configure the wireless network, but there are certain insanities that even I won''t try. You can only use one network wired or wireless at once. As I mentioned in the intro, it comes with both Macintosh and Windows software. Getting it to work on my additional networked computers was as simple as inserting the DVD and running the install program.

Ink Consumption

Some printer politely sip ink, but this isn''t one of them. It''s not quite as bad as beer consumption at a frat party, but in the last 2500 pages, I''ve gone through six black and two full sets of color cartridges. That works out to slightly over 10.5 cents per page at Amazon''s current (11/11/09) prices for OEM ink cartridges...fine for normal use, but not great if you''re going to use the printer heavily. Your ink consumption will vary, depending on the mix of photos, graphics and text that you print.

Packaging

You know that ubiquitous orange tape that printer manufactures use to hold everything together? It''s there in spades. I wish I owned that franchise. Otherwise, it looks like the printer should ship well. It''s well isolated with plenty of molded styrofoam.

In summary, this is my fourth Canon printer and probably the twentieth printer that I''ve owned. Outside of the faxing issue, it works great. The duplex scanning and printing are valued additions and real time savers...I would have given it a solid five stars if it wasn''t for the faxing problem. I haven''t used the printer enough to get a sense of long-term reliability; after a couple of thousand sheets of paper, it''s been jam free and solid.

Pros: Acceptable printing speed. Good and fast draft prints and copies. Quiet operation. Text quality is nearly laser sharp. Very good photo quality. Duplex printing and copying. Software that works well, unlike HP.

Cons: Can NOT produce proper COPY of documents with margins less than 0.25 inches. Borderless copy doesn''t help. Can''t print from USB keys. Poorly designed USB slot barely fits average USB key. No document preview on copy and scan on the LCD like HP has.

Summary: Let me start with the bad. I''ve been bugging Canon support for the past several days because I discovered a big flaw in the COPY feature of the printer. MX860 is utterly incapable of producing a copy of the document that has side margins less than 0.25 inches. If you have an 8.5x11 document with small margins that you want to copy, too bad you''ll have to scan to PC first and then reprint, otherwise your margins will be partially cut off. I''ve tried everything Fit To Page which should be designed just for cases like this, borderless copy, size reduction. I can reduce the doc to 25% original size and still the margin adjacent to the initial horizontal edge of the flatbed scanner will be messed up. I do not believe this is a defect of my particular printer and the tech support didn''t say that either. I''ve sent them scanned samples of my copies to show them that no method can be used to make such a copy successfully. It has been very frustrating and just today my wife asked me to make a copy of some document the credit card company sent her and I couldn''t do it on MX860. I am actually comparing MX860 to HP Photosmart C7280. Canon kills the HP in text quality and sharpness as well as better photo quality especially on Standard quality setting. But when it comes to making copies of such documents, HP easily achieves the desired result using Fit To Page. Canon, what were you thinking?

In addition, try placing a 4x6 photo starting in the corner where the arrow on the flatbed marks the starting position. You will end up with a copy of the photo that is missing 0.25inches on one of its sides. You will have to move the photo away from the scanner edge to get a proper copy.

Needless to say I am very annoyed with this AIO at this point. If you are not bothered by such an issue, this is a very good all around AIO with some very useful extra features. Scanning straight to PDF is very good one and so is duplex copying (unless you have a doc with those margins). Very good quality printing.

But for it''s flaw the machine is getting 3 stars from me. If that copy wasn''t an issue it would have been 4 or maybe even 4.5.

BTW tech support said they will forward my comments to the customer feedback program. There is nothing they can do just as I thought. Unless enough people complain it maybe a while before this is fixed, if ever.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The build quality is striking. It is very well packed and instructions are the best I have seen of any consumer electronics product including previous Canon products. There is a "kickstand" for keeping the printer open while inserting the 5 ink tanks and closing it reveals that it has a gentle piston like a luxury car''s hood. Other details include a mechanism on the output try that automatically opens when printing to keep papers from spewing onto the floor. There is definitely some weight to this device and it is much larger than a printer you might get free with a PC purchase. Still I said to myself as I unpacked "was this really just $199?" as I had been looking at more expensive models and was concerned the quality would suffer to provide the MX860''s price point.

PHYSICAL SETUP

Okay, I was flat out scared to insert the print head and break the caps off the five delicate ink tanks to insert them, but I think the instructions were just trying to make a point. In any case, do prepare your setup with lots of light as the print head insertion process is both dark and covered in warning stickers. I had no problems however because the on-screen instructions were clear (both visually and intellectually) and after printing a three step printhead alignment, output quality was definitely promising. I went with the wireless setup so I left the included USB cable (thanks Canon!) and phone lines (don''t intend to fax) in the bag. The built in paper tray (letter size only) hides away neatly under the printer and there is a second input on the back of the unit for other media, plain paper, envelopes, or photo paper (hey a free 4x6 sample pack is included, cool!)

NETWORK SETUP

I installed the OS X drivers on a MacBook and it was very easy. Note that there are different instructions for 10.4 and 10.5 which are the only two versions supported as of Feb 2009 (Vista, XP, and 2000 are also supported, though it is unclear if 64-bit drivers are provided for those OSes). Software is as straight forward as the printed instructions. I did not install Canon''s included photo software as I am expecting iPhoto to handle those tasks.I put the printer in Wireless LAN setup mode. A couple items to note though: Canon does proide for totally wireless setup though Wi-Fi Protected Setup though I went with the more straight forward USB connection to get the printer setup on the wireless network (turns out that included USB cable was helpful). The second item to note is that the software required a reboot which I am not accustom to with OS X software but none the less went along with. It was very cool to see the results of a two minute Wi-Fi quality test that shows the signal strength from base station to printer. (I was in the green zone from about 50 60 feet from the base station through two walls.)

PRINTING

Printing is so subjective I''m not going to try to quantify it. I''ll say that it looks very crisp to me not laser printer crisp, but every bit as sharp as I expected. Have not printed photos yet. The printing is about moderate in speed and as loud as my $300 HP All-in-One from 2004 but lower in tone so not as annoying.

SCANNING

Wireless scanning was what I was very interested in and the MX860 did not disappoint. Can scan from the glass, or the Auto-Document Feeder (ADF) and even do front and back duplex scans from the ADF. The awesome on-screen menu system is intuitive and allows you to choose your target wireless device to scan to. Scanning was faster and quieter than I expected and the resolution is truly excellent for an All-in-One. This is not a dedicated scanner and it won''t scan a legal document, but when you want to quickly front and back scan those rebate forms before you send them in, this will be a good friend to have. I also look forward to batch scanning old printed photos for import into iPhoto.

OTHER FEATURES

I haven''t had time to test printing from a memory card, duplex or ADF copy/print/scanning, faxing or receiving a fax, or Bluetooth (didn''t purchase the optional module for $30). But what I was keenly impressed with is the crisp, intuitive menus. Very easy to navigate and follow. Things are where you think they will be. I wanted to turn down the volume of the keypad confirmation beeps and pleasantly had a whole menu of selection to do so for various volumes including off, as well as different settings for key press or alarms. The attention to detail and user experience really shows.

I looked and looked for a wireless all-in-one printer, with fax, and finally settled on this one. I saw the notes about the wireless setup being tricky, but being very computer savvy, I thought it would be a snap.

WRONG. Wow, whoever at Canon dreamed up this printer''s wireless setup should be flogged and fired. If you are trying to figure out Canon''s way to do wireless, here are some tips for you potential buyers. These tips are only meant for those needing help with wireless setup not USB setup.

1. Don''t even try to setup wireless using the printer itself. Unlike most products these days, there is NOT an option to scan/select/enter your network''s SSID, enter a security key, and bam you are done. No, the printer based setup is a mess.

2. Turn off your printer for now, and make sure it is not connected to anything via USB.

3. You need a laptop or other computer that is already connected to your network WIRELESSLY. Don''t use a PC/laptop that is connected to your network via ethernet cable. THIS IS KEY. You will connect your printer to this wireless PC/laptop via USB LATER. Keep reading.

4. Put the Software disc in, select Custom Install, Select ALL of the software options.

5. When asked, choose that you want to setup a network based printer (do NOT select the USB based printer). This is the second option.

6. Eventually you will be asked to connect a USB cable to your printer, then this wireless laptop/PC, and then turn on the printer.

From here, I think the instructions are actually OK to follow. The key to this printer''s wireless setup is using a wirelessly connected laptop/PC to set it up.

Also, if you are going to setup other laptopsPC''s in your house to connect with this printer, you cannot simply use the IP address that you end up getting or setting. No, you need to take the software disc to each laptop/PC, install at least the drivers (more if you want, but only the drivers are needed), and when asked, select the option stating you want to connect to a printer that is already setup on the network.

Well folks, I hope this helps some of you. I do like this printer, its print speeds are fine and the print quality is good as usual, for Canon.

I have a Canon MP830 multifunction printer connected to my Mac running OS X10.5.X. In many ways I find the Canon unit to be functional and more than satisfactory. I print the occasional photo and have been please with the results, although I have to admit that I am increasingly using photo printing services because the results are overall better and there is little wastage of ink, paper and time to get good results. The scanner works great and I love the sheet feeder on it. I use the fax for outgoing occasionally and it works well enough. Copier function is fine as well.

Most of us know that printer companies really sell ink to make their money, and Canon is no exception. I have long noticed that my Canon is constantly pestering me about replacing a color ink tank when I haven''t been doing color printing. These tanks ain''t cheap. If you buy canon inks, a 4-tank (CMYK) pack is going to set you back about $45 discounted.

After being hit up by my printer for yet another color tank, and knowing I have printed no color images lately, I investigated more carefully. Referring to the Canon support website under "greyscale printing", which is the only such option offered by the printer driver. I find the following words:

"Note: Grayscale printing does not prevent the use of all inks. Shades of gray are created by using all color inks to create a composite shading."

I started looking into other models of the Canon multifunction printer sets and found the same answer for this and other models.

Just be aware, that with simply modest B&W printing, you are going to go through a lot of color ink. Since I can buy a B&W laser printer for less than $100 now, I am strongly considering this option, and relegating my Canon to scanner/fax service only. A rather big disappointment, because I don''t like being taken advantage of. If I were shopping again, I would look carefully at the KODAK printers simply because they are making a marketing point of the abuse consumers have been suffering at the hands of the other ink vendors.

I ordered this item for use in a HP cp1160 inkjet printer. The printer reads an expiration date code from the ink cartridge, and if the cartridge is expired, the printer will not operate. When I installed the remanufactured tricolor cartridge to replace an empty one, the printer did not recognize it as a valid cartridge and did not operate. Replacement with a factory-original tricolor cartridge restored proper operation. Perhaps the idea of remanufactured cartridges is a good one for printers that do not have the expiration date code "feature", but it is not a good idea for the HP cp1160. I do not know if other machines that use the same cartridges would have the same problem. Since the printer is old and ink cartridges are getting hard to get, I will replace it soon, but definitely not with one made by HP! The prices for factory-original HP cartridges are very high, and I feel that the expiration date code "feature" is just a scam to sell more expensive ink cartridges.

Five Stars because the HP 38 Cyan Pigment Ink Cartridge was shipped immediately and arrived promptly in good condition. If you use HP 38 ink in your printer, you must have all eight colors in the HP 38 series for your printer to operate properly, so price is a big consideration. Buying blind can cost you more for a complete set of inks, including more than one cartridge for the light gray and a couple of other colors that are used up faster than the others, than a new printer, and in fact I have heard of people that simply buy a new printer (of a different make) because it''s cheaper than the inks. When that happens, I check out what I do have, flesh out what I need to have a complete set including two of light gray, light cyan, and light magenta, and order them all, usually on Amazon. I like genuine HP inks on Amazon because that''s where the price, Amazon Prime free shipping, vendor reliability, and prompt delivery all come together. I need genuine HP inks because I have this printer for studio-quality color prints and I depend on it for my most-invested hobby, and I don''t have the time or patience to deal with cartridges that require color re-calibration or don''t provide the color fidelity that I expect of an 8-ink printer, or that don''t last as long as HP 38 ink cartridges. One of the reasons that I selected this printer was the combination of quality prints, low cost per print, and long life of the ink cartridges, a rare combination.

I like this paper although I think Epson has a quality control problem. Some boxes, the paper seems thicker and or stiffer than others. This makes it more difficult at times to load without the printer acting up. My biggest problem is that there are always 2 or 3 sheets per box that have a small dark blue or black speck on the print side, one had a deep brown seed imbedded in it that broke through the top and back and I have had problems with impressions (like tire marks) as well. Every box, no matter where I purchase it from has this problem and at a dollar a sheet, it adds up. If this continues, I''m just going to have to switch brands.

I am writing this in July 2008 I bought the HP j6450 AIO printer and installed it on my imac. The CD that came with the printer did not support OS X version 10.5! But it was not obvious until i tried to install it and it would not work. So after some time I went to the HP site and sure enough there was a download for OS X 10.5 I did it and the printer installed with no problems and wireless works great as do all features. Just be sure to check your OS version and get the correct drivers!

I purchased this multifunction printer to replace another HP multifunction printer that had failed. In the process of setting this up, I came to realize that the installation CD that came with it -along with HP''s installation instructions -are to be avoided at all costs. Instead, I''d follow Chong Yip''s set-up suggestions for PC''s running Vista. See his review under Amazon''s product: HP Officejet J6480. Without his tips, or my subsequent adjustments (see my comment that follows his review), I would surely have returned this machine. It has many useful features, especially its wireless networking capabilities, but HP''s convoluted directions and accompanying bloatware diminish its value. That''s why I gave it 4 stars -for the steep learning curve I had to climb in order to get it to work. Otherwise, it''s a winner.

I have purchased two Lexmark T640s from ceigreen. Both have been in excellent condition, and priced great. Our business owns about 12-15 over these printers; our software supplier demands we use them. Great printer, good print speed. Only problems arise when refilled toners are used. Recommend using only new Lexmark supplies. (No, this is not a paid sales pitch; just experience.)

I installed this printer a year ago at a non-profit I work for. It has a couple of gotchas, which caused us massive grief for a few months.

If you print via the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), the printer will crash periodically on seemingly random jobs. When it crashes, it doesn''t automatically reboot. Reconfiguring your print server or desktops to use the LPD (or other protocols) will fix the problem. Lexmark has all but forgotten about this printer, and hasn''t offered a software update since May of ''07, and the frequent crashes are not addressed on their support site, but *are* mentioned all over the internet. :-)

We are a PostScript based shop (but really just print Word and Excel documents), and this printer''s emulation software is adequate, but unbelievably slow. I wrote some simple PostScript test pages which fly out of our other printers, but not the T640. When warmed up, time to first page varies from 5 to 60 seconds.

The printer is *very* eager to print. The moment a print job starts downloading, the fans, rollers and drum fire up in anticipation. Then they shut off twenty seconds later because the PostScript interpreter hasn''t finished rasterizing the page. It makes you get up from your chair ("It''s printing!") only to fake you out. :-)

Generally, PostScript benefits from having more available memory, so I added 512MB to the thing, and it really didn''t make much difference.

So yeah, the printer does what it''s supposed to. Just slowly.

I have had this printer installed at my place of business for about 1 year. I have constant paper jams from the add-on tray 2 that I purchased with the machine. This I believe is due to a design flaw which puts the pick up roller on a swing arm above a non spring loaded sloped bottom tray. The roller comes down to pick up the paper and it''s not precise enough so paper jam occurs. I have improved the performance somewhat by adding a 1/2" block to the tray to raise the paper some more.

Bad design as well if you are using the multi use tray (for checks, etc). Pickup roller is at the left end of the tray (instead of in the middle like the HP), so the paper goes in crooked and sometimes jams.

The add on tray is also huge leading you to believe you can fill it right up (like with the HP), but you can only fill it half way, and the tray that comes with the printer only holds about 100 sheets.

Another minor annoyance is that when you want to use the multi use tray, instead of defaulting to that tray when there is paper in it, you have to select it every time.

Bottom line: spend the extra money and get the HP. I wish I did.

Although it is stated plainly on the front of each package of labels (Will not life or peel), these labels do lift, I''m guessing from the movement of air created as a disc spins inside any machine, causing the edge of labels to lift. If your disc sits inside a drawer or a front cover can be lifted to insert or remove a disc, there is less problem. If your disc is inserted into a slot (car CD players or my Bose system) and that edge lifts, it will be near impossible to eject the CD. Such was my problem; I had to have someone remove the front panel in our van, retrieve the discs from the player, only to find that not being able to eject the affected disc had also damaged the drop down mechanism as each of six discs was to play. I called Avery Dennison at one time, spoke to someone in, perhaps, India; "Oh, no, we''ve had no reported problems." Instead they sent me a package of the CD labels. I wrote to the company, received two additional packages of labels in response to my letter. So, after a new disc player was installed in our van, I packed all unused lables, the unopened packages of labels, the applicator and any receipts I could find, including for installation and purchase of a new disc player, copied all of those receipts, and sent them back to the company. I''ll be waiting to see just what action, if any, they take. There is a new program, LightScribe, for labeling discs that works with the same mechanism used to burn CDs. This sounds preferable to affixing any labels in the future

These labels are thin and flimsy and tear easily. Moreover, they are not precise. They fit loosely on a standard labeling machine''s small spindle, and the result is a sloppy looking, off-center label. To add insult to injury, Avery has a template on the Website for the 8960 label, but the actual label sheet directs you to use either of two template numbers, neither of which is 8960. I checked the Avery site, and the numbers are for templates that have nothing to do with this label.

Neato labels are more substantial and precise. Unfortunately, Neato doesn''t make the "full" DVD label with the small hole, so I guess the only solution is to go back to their CD-style big hole label.

So the labels work, and I have used them successfully. But you''d better be really careful. The little white tabs that you use to handle the label during the application process do not tear off cleanly, so no matter how careful I am I always end up with some little paper shreddies sticking out of my label on both sides. So, I pick the big ones out with tweezers and stick the others down.

So far so good, but this certainly can''t be the last word in this sort of product. I think once I use up these labels I''ll look at other products.

Compared to other labels (Memorex) these seem extremely thin and flimsy. They''re also a pain to peel off after they''re printed. But the worst part if you print one of the two lables, use the one you printed, then try to use the same template for another printout, BE CAREFUL!! When it went through my printer some of the sticky parts of the template shredded around parts of my printer, mainly in the paper feed and I had to perform SURGERY to get all the tiny pieces out. My printer still isn''t the same, I couldn''t get all the glue off some of the rollers. I highly recommend AGAINST this product!!!

I bought this cartridge set to try and avoid paying more for a set of cartridges than I did for our HP Office Jet Pro 8500 printer. I''m a Fine Art Digital Photographer, not a techno geek to make it plain to those reading my assessment of the Epson Stylus Pro 3800. Since getting into the digital arena and printing my own images, I''ve been with Epson exclusively. My digital prints are quality images, printed on the many available Epson substrates with perfect results. The Pro3800 is intuitive and easy to use, the switching between photo and matte inks is seamless, but takes a little time. So what. Coming from a wet darkroom experience in the past, time was something expected and desired for the outcome of a beautiful print. The printer''s colors are spectacular, the black and whites are great, the manual is easy to understand and if followed, the results speak for themselves.

Perhaps I should mention that my printer is upstairs in my studio, attached to my MacBook Pro and used only for the purpose of creating my photographs. The previous reviewer speaks of many other applications he had in mind for this unit. Perhaps his expectations somehow exceed the normal use for a printer of this caliber. But, I admit, I am no techno person, just an artist who is delighted with the performance of this printer.

As to the shipping mishaps he has experienced, unfortunate, but does happen. I bought my printer through Amazon, and it arrived in tip top shape. Also, I''ve always had good customer support from Epson in the past, so don''t know why he didn''t.

For you ..... prospective buyers ...... assess your printing needs first, look up other printers and independent reviews, then make an informed choice.

This printer offers excellent print-quality, and it does so in a small footprint. I''m amazed! However, Epson slacks a little in regards to reliable networking, beta-testing, shipping, and efficiency.

I have possessed two of these printers and both had some major issue:

#1 First one was most likely damaged during packaging, because the shipping box was in pristine condition. I had to ship it back and get another printer, albeit, I didn''t have to ship it until the new one arrived, but with Epson''s poor tech-support, even this was no easy job for me. I ended up having to call the Headquarters to speak with someone, but the whole building was too busy with some big meeting to help me. Nobody EVER called me back during the whole experience of swapping the two printers out.

#2 Second printer was also damaged (STRAIGHT FROM EPSON!), but I managed to reset the front tray. You can tell the machine is fragile, just from the serious amount of foam and blue tape Epson ships the device with. It takes a good 5-10 minutes to carefully unpack. Printers have never really been built like tanks, and I don''t expect the manufacturers will find a way any time soon.

#3 Bug in the software? My printer suddenly started displaying it was using Photo-Black ink, instead of Matte. So I set it to swap the blacks out back to Matte black. Soon after, it displayed Photo Black again. So I wasted two swaps to find a cosmetic BUG! Cosmetic, sure, but this is a bit over the top. Epson even mis-spelled the word, "Networking" in the Firmware update utility inside the LFP Remote Panel. If that''s indicative of Epson''s attention to detail, I can only imagine this is where they had to cut some jobs to give the K3-ink crew more time and materials. I''m just glad the K3-ink department got it right!

#4 The IT staff at Epson should get more involved with the design engineers and help them understand more about RELIABLE LAN networking. This printer is among the lowest quality LAN nodes I''ve dealt with in my life. I''m a Cisco Network Engineer, btw. If you want to experience repeated futility, try getting this thing to regain an Ethernet connection to a Mac Book Pro after unplugging the cable and rebooting either device. I don''t wish to think every Epson printer does this, but I''m surprised Epson didn''t build any decent Ethernet status monitoring in the printer. No, that''s something HP does well, and have proven it for the last ten years.

#5 Poorly laid out menus and buttons: Yeah I''ve worked with better. Question: Why do you have to reboot the printer to change it''s IP address? Haven''t we evolved enough to virtually eliminate reboots?

I can''t boast enough about the print-quality, and to keep the price within reach, there has to be some sacrifices made along the way. Shareholders don''t budge on these things, and I don''t expect Seiko to, either. So, if you can live with potential issues in production as such, I think you''ll be a satisfied customer, assuming your printer arrives intact and without something bent. I just wish Epson could have worked a little harder on other aspects of the printer that may not relate directly to the actual image.

btw, the whole time it took me to type this review, the Epson print software STILL hadn''t figured out it cannot print due to the Printer''s NIC card not communicating! How about a little better error-checking? I wish Canon were better, but they''re really not. They seem to have budget issues caused by shareholders, too.

I bought this printer in Jan. 2011 and it was broken 3 months later. It got a paper jam one day and never fed paper into the printer properly after that. It pulls to one side each time you try to print and then jams. It felt very flimsy from the first day I got it, so I guess I didn''t expect it to last for years...thought it would last longer than 3 months though. Ink cartridges run dry very fast too. They are very small and feel light compared with my last HP printer''s cartridges (which I''ve had for over 8 years by the way, and the printer still works). I have to say the scanner worked well for me and made great copies while it lasted. I wouldn''t buy this printer again.

I bought mine at walmart online for $34 + s/h costs for a total of $41 in early January this year and i thought i was getting a deal but it was NOT a deal. I barely even used my printer on a regular basis yet in just 2 months, the paper would jam and the plastic mechanism rollers that were supposed to roll the paper into the printer wouldn''t even work. The printer didn''t come with a cable to connect it to the computer. For anyone who''s gotten this machine or any other electronics and can''t return it back to the store because it''s past the 30-day return policy, there''s usually a 1-year manufacturer warranty. As long as you bought it new from an authorized retailer like the big box stores and filled out the registration for it in the beginning with HP (or you''ve still got receipts to prove you bought it within a year), just call up their tech support at HP and in the end, they''ll have to replace it free of charge which is what happened when I called them. My Epson printer died on me in the middle of a project. So I pulled out my old Brother all-in-one printer but the ink head was messed up. Tried cleaning it, no luck there. So I started to research some printers and found this printer at first on Amazon and then located one for sale at Target for $40 bucks. Mine did come with a usb cable and the printer surprisingly included XL cartridges. I have a Windows XP System and the s/w loaded perfectly. Now I was finally able to get my project finished. The print quality is very good considering it only has 4 colors. And I''m done spending money on expensive printers. The Epson printer would still be working if the printer ROM hadn''t said the printer was at end of life. I paid a lot of money for that printer and just because I printed a lot of documents on it I was penalized by Epson. I tried to reset the counter on the darn thing but nothing would work. I will never ever buy another Epson again. As far as the Brother All-In-One was concerned the print head became dirty and there is no way to get in there to manually clean the thing. So no more Brother printers for me. HP on the other hand has always been a great reliable printer for me. I should have never given away my HP to a friend of mine when I got my Epson to print photo quality prints. But hey for $40 bucks I''m happy to be able to print and scan with this thing. I have read some reviews complaining about the reliability of this printer but what the heck, if it should break within 90 days Target will replace it and if it should fail within a year HP will replace it. Not so bad. And if it should last me for more than a year and fail that''s ok too. Printing for $40 bucks a year on a printer that uses cartridges that can be refilled is awesome. So now I''m back with HP and I think I''m going to stick with them from now on.

I bought this for $20 during 2010 Black Friday sale. I had been without a printer for months and couldn''t pass this up. It felt and acted cheaply, but since I rarely print and just needed a home printer/scanner for personal use when I needed it, this would do. Worked fine for about a year, tho I don''t recommend installing the software, I didn''t and got no hassles. I will say I got at least a year and change out of it, but you have to be VERY CAREFUL with paper. I don''t think it went through ink that bad either.

But one day out of nowhere, the paper is in fine, and it just yanks it down and then BAM it''s totaled. Now when I try to print it gives me a paper jam and yanks the paper down to one side and refuses to print. I have a full ink cartridge inside that will now be useless. I have had so many printer problems, from Epson to HP and beyond. It makes me scared to buy anything to expensive as I can''t be replacing printers left and right, and to get a replacement is like trying to break into the pentagon in a Groucho Marx get up and expect to even get on the grounds. Hard as hell and you end up screwed in the end.

I will say the scanner worked just fine and still works. But I still need a printer. For $20 I shouldn''t complain, but this just happened to be a black Friday sale. This printer really costs over $60 and if it''s the same printer and same parts, etc, it should still give you solid craftsmanship. If I pay more than $70 for a printer I should get a replacement pronto. I won''t even bother with this, but it''s sad that a lot of these printers are pieces of junk.

I say do not buy this brand (not HP, but model) at least, because if it will do this no matter the price then it''s barely worth a $1.

HP''s low end printers follow a business model pretty close to the old give away the razor, sell the blades model. That''s fair enough, but some analyst at HP has been figuring out ways to make sure that HP squeezes every ink cartridge penny out of consumers that they can. You can''t easily use compatible or refilled cartridges. Worse, with every new cartridge (and the tiny cartridges don''t give you many pages before you are sending plastic to the landfill and installing a new one) the HP software insists that you print a full color page so the printer can ''align'' itself. No matter that the program doesn''t seem to do any alignment. Your print job is going on hold until HP gets its little piece of paper. (You can skip alignment, but that just means it keeps asking with every print job, in my experience.)

Here''s the point for the bean counters at HP, if they ever read these reviews: you spend a lot of money on advertising, but your brand, which is what differentiates you from the lowest cost generic item coming out of Chengdu or Thailand, depends on the total customer experience. Once you have a customer, your brand to them is how you treat them. How you treat me is you waste my time and my money by making me print useless scan pages with every new cartridge. How you treat me makes me not like you, because it is so transparently not done in my interest (I could run a scan test if the printing gets fuzzy, if I want) but all done in the interest of boosting just a little bit your ink sales. A couple of wasted pages per cartridge add up across lots of cartridges, but you need to consider the cost to your brand. I''m done buying HP. I''ve got you pegged as a company that wants to use, not help, its customers, and there is too much competition out there for me to spend time with such a company.

I just purchased after market toner cartridges for a Brother MFC 9460 CDN laser printer and could not get the printer to recognize the new cartridges. I found a solution and thought I would pass it along.

1. Turn on the printer

2. With the printer power on, open the toner access door. Note: "door open" message will appear.

3. Push the Clear/Back button to bring up a reset menu. There are 8 different

toner functions (for simplicity, two K''s, two C''s, two M''s, and two Y''s).

4. Using the up and down arrow buttons scroll through the printer''s 4 toner cartridge options. The toner cartridges are listed with the following codes (K,C,M,Y). Note: The 4 printer cartridges are listed as "SHC" for small and "HC" for high yield. When you highlight the cartridge you are working on hit "OK" on the printers control board and then type 1 on the keypad to select reset.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 5 for each of the 8 toner functions.

6. When finished, press the "clear/back" button to exit from the "reset menu"

8. Close the toner access door and you will be able to print again.

It actually works! I hope this helps someone as it took me two days of looking around to get the information!

This is my first multifunction machine and in almost all aspects surpassed my expectations. The only function that needs some work is the OCR function.This is most probably a function of the software that is required for OCR ability. Extremely satisfied with this MFC.

Out of the box, printer would print a black vertical line, even when copying a blank page. After extensive reading online and going out of my way, I looked closely into the corona wires. Stuck in between the black drum unit and the corona wire I noticed a piece of some sort of grey Styrofoam. I used a business card, carefully not scratching the drum, and managed to wedge out the piece. Luckily, that was the culprit. Now I have my multi-function printer up and running in my small business office network. Works like a charm.

I am very surprised at how poorly my new Brother printer performed. Straight out of the box I had large dark black lines running down the left and right margin. I trouble shot with customer service four times before the in-house service call was arranged. A month and a half later the unit is at a regional repair shop.

I considered returning it but decided to repair under warranty because of return freight cost and the hope that it could be repaired successfully and become the highly rated printer I thought I was buying. At this point I remain frustrated and disappointed.

First of all, you will need to figure out where you''re going to put this thing: it''s quite large. It measures 22" x 15". The hinged lid, though removable, requires over 2 feet of clearance above the surface that the scanner sits on.

The scanner works fine with my computer, but I confess that I have Windows 2000. Other reviewers are reporting problems with other operating systems. DO read them.

You get two CD ROMs: One contains the drivers, and the other is scanner-compatible graphic software from Ulead. The driver CD ROM installs a software panel with VERY limited setting options. The Ulead CD ROM installs all kinds of extra crap that runs in the background and uses up computer resources.

Your best solution is to find software on the internet that will scan your documents while giving you a much wider range of options. I''m using Photocopier Pro by Nico Cuppen Software.

That''s part of the process unless you have $4-5,000 in extra cash lying around for the tip top line of scanners.

My needs are simple. I want a scanner with 11 x 17 capabilities to scan books, magazines, and other items for online auctions. From time to time, I also scan receipts, documents, newspaper clippings, etc. to convert to .pdf files for emailing or posting online. After researching the market for flat-bed scanners, I purchased the Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB scanner about four months ago. These days finding a flat-bed scanner (not intended for scanning photographs) is tough. Moreover, its nearest competitor with 11 x 17 capability (Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL) is about $1200!

I conneted the Mustek ScanExpress to my Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook (with Windows XP Professional) purchased in mid-2005. There were no compatibility or connectivity issues. I use UleadPhotoExpress (from the installation CD) to scan images onto my hard-drive. Then, I edit the images with JASC Paint Shop Pro_8. To date, I have been pleased with the quality of the scanned images and the ease of use of this Mustek scanner.

You can''t ignore the large tabloid format for under $200. This is one great feature especially if you need to scan in rare pieces of printed music. The tabloid size is great for music and will allow you to archive the sheet music electronically.

Bad things:

1. Poor packaging. My first shipment arrived in pieces. The scanner ships in a flimsey box that does not protect it very well. When I opened it up on arrival, the glass scanner bed was in pieces. It''s very brittle and the glass breaks into powder so be careful.

2. Poor quality Control. The second shipment from Amazon arrived in one piece, however the cable that drives the scanner head was popped off and the scanner didn''t work.

3. Poor customer service. I tried contacting customer support serval times but got no response. I ended up taking the thing apart and fixing it myself (and it worked!). That''s the up side -the scanner is so simple, that you can probably fix any problem with it yourself (except, of course, if it involved a blown circut board).

4. El Crapamundo Software Interface. It really stinks and I mean REALLY stinks. Just like in the outhouse, if you stay in there long enough, you''ll get used to the stench. That''s the same thing with the software. If you get used to its weird behavior, you won''t notice it so much. It has a nasty memory leak in it so after you scan in about 25 pages, you''ll have to quit the software to realease the memory (the software will crap out on you and say that it can''t save the file).

The upside is that it has a "good enough" OCR software packaged with it. I used it once or twice on small stuff, but I wouldn''t let a large project hinge upon the performance of this scanner.

So if you need a big scanner once in a while, this is a great value (mine has already paid for itself several times over). If you are going to use it for an ongoing project or need the scanner (operable) in a short period of time, depending on your project, you might want to pay the extra $ to get a more versatile and reliable machine.

Finally a great priced scanner for all us scrapbook artists that need a larger one for scanning our completed 12x12 pages.I love being able to scan pages into my computer instead of having to use a photo stitching program (which does not work very well).The color is not the best so I scan directly into my photosuite program to adjust for the correct colors.I plan to purchase another one for my daughter who also loves scrapbooking.Of all the companys out there who make scanners--only Mustek makes this size scanner at a reasonable price.I just wish they were not so hard to find.Hoping Amazon will start carrying it again.
