HP Officejet 5510 All-in-One Printer

HP Officejet 5510 All-in-One Printer
  • Up to 17 ppm print speed, up to 17 copies per minute
  • Color printing, copying, scanning, and faxing
  • Up to 600 x 2,400 dpi optical scan resolution, 36 bit color depth, 4,800 x 1,200 maximum optimized print resolution
  • USB interface, PC and Mac compatible

All things being equal, I would have to call the HP OfficeJet 5510 one of the best all-around printers / copiers / scanners around. I have reviewed enough all-in-one units now to appreciate a great model when I get to play with one, and after a month of testing, I can honestly say that the OfficeJet 5510 has really impressed me.

Printing is probably the main reason anyone would purchase this unit. The print quality is simply fantastic. Printing text-only pages is very, very fast, much quicker than I was expecting from an ink-jet printer. So quick, in fact, that my nine-year old daughter even commented on it just this morning. I used the OfficeJet 5510 to print out a letter to her school. She asked which printer it would come out, and I pointed to the HP. It was done printing just a few seconds later. Her reaction? "Wow, that was a lot faster than the silver and black printer." The silver and black printer being the Lexmark 5150 I reviewed back in June 2003.

Fast is not always good if the print quality is not up to par. The OfficeJet 5510 has nothing to fear. Using standard high-gloss photo paper and printing a photo from iPhoto, I was simply amazed at the print quality. I have printed many full-page color photos over the last few years, and I can honestly say that the OfficeJet 5510''s print quality is one of the best for an ink-jet printer. While no speed demon printing a full-page color print, the print time was respectable.

Paper is loaded from the bottom front of the unit, so it is much easier to see how much paper you have left at a quick glance. Not so with a rear, upwards facing paper tray such as those found on most Lexmark, Epson, and other printers. I much prefer a lower-front loading tray to the other types. My only grip here is that there is no protective cover for the paper tray, meaning that if you don''t print something every few days, dust will accumulate, and be run through your printer when you do.

Be aware that the OfficeJet 5510 is not a post-script printer; so graphic professionals will want to look elsewhere. There is also no built-in print sharing with the OfficeJet 5510, nor is it compatible with Rendezvous, but you can share it via USB Print Sharing built-in to OS X.

Speaking of OS X, if you are not using Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.1, and are still a happy OS 9.0 or earlier user, you are out of luck. Like many programs and hardware coming out as of late, the OfficeJet 5510 is not compatible with pre-OS X operating systems. Nor is it compatible with Windows 95, NT, 3.1, or DOS, either.)

Scanning is done via the HP Director software, which you can only get from the included CD-ROM. To deviate from the standard review process for a moment, I would like to point out that HP, while having great products for the most part, has a woefully inadequate support website. The above mentioned HP Director software cannot be downloaded via their website. When Mac OS X 10.3 was released, I had some initial problems printing to the OfficeJet 5510. The problem was unrelated to the HP software, but in my search for a cure I did learn of the poor quality of HP''s support pages. What happens if I loose or scratch my HP CD-ROM? I have to order another one. And as of today''s date, there is still no software update for the software on HP''s website. The same software, HP Director, also controls their digital cameras with their HP Director (Camera). There is also no update for that program online, even though I cannot get it to work under 10.3 correctly. For a company the size and with the reputation they have, I expect better from HP.

Getting back to the OfficeJet 5510 and scanning, I have found that the scanning works great. While I don''t especially like the scanning software the OfficeJet 5510 ships with, it does work well. You can access the software directly through Adobe Photoshop as well, via the Import-HP All-in-one Scan in the File menu. You can scan photos or documents from 150x150 DPI up to 19200x19200 DPI. The flatbed scanner performs about the same as most other scanners (and copiers) in this price-range, and there is nothing here. It work fine, has an auto-crop feature, etc...

The true strength of scanning, however, if the 20-page top-load automatic document feeder on top of the OfficeJet 5510. You can set the printer to scan multiple documents (not pictures) up to 20 pages, which is a great feature, one many small or home business users will appreciate.

Usually, when reviewing a multi-function printer / scanner / fax machine, the fax aspect is the least impressive. Using built-in fax software, you have to have your computer turned on to control, send, or receive a fax. Not so with the OfficeJet 5510! HP, realizing how nice it would be to be able to send and receive faxes, has taken the need to have a computer out of the equation. Simply plug the OfficeJet 5510 into your phone jack, and you can control all the fax features from the built-in LCD display. This is a great feature, one I overlooked when my testing first started. I now feel that this is one of the best selling points to the unit, and one I did not realized I missed so much from other units.

Buy HP Officejet 5510 All-in-One Printer Now

In search of a machine that would be compact and efficient enough to serve as an all around tool, I researched several brands and models that are with-in the less than $250 price range.

I''ve always find it cost effective to go to Costco to get prints off of my digital camera rather than print pictures on a color laser or inkjet printer, so photo quality was not a concern in my quest. I did however require an auto-document feeder, which comes in extremely handy when faxing pages and pages of documents.

Dell had the A960, which is a spin-off of the Lexmark X6170. These printers caught my attention but upon reading the specifications (lack of fax memory), seeing it up-close and after inspecting the prints it produced, I had to find something better. I looked at and tested Brother''s $149.00 entry to the "all-in-one" market but aside from having a slow fax modem (14.4kbps), plasticky and flimsy looking, the prints were not too good either. Personally, I prefer Epson printers because of overall performance, print quality and design, but since Epson''s all-in-one does not come with fax capabilities, I turned to HP.

HP offers several all-in-one models with auto-document feeder to choose from starting from this 5500 series all the way to the 7100 series, which cost a lot more. I did not need the built-in card readers, wanted a very small overall footprint and wanted something affordable so I chose the HP5510v. I tried the 6100 series as well and aside from having more on-board buttons it slightly has an edge over the 5510 in terms of print quality. Bear in mind though that I had the prints inches away from my face trying to compare and scrutinize the differences. In the end $100+ difference between the 2 was more noticeable.

I have Win XP on my machine and I would have to say that setup was simple and easy enough if you follow the setup poster to the letter. Other reviewers had issues with driver setup and had to call HP customer support and got connected to a tech person in India, which in the end caused more problems. I''m guessing that because we''ve been so accustomed to hooking up the new device first before installing the driver/software, people tend to do just that. With the 5510, you have to begin installation of the printer driver/software using the CD first, and then wait until it instructs you to connect the printer to your PC. So make sure you read the instructions carefully.

The install CD uses a chunk of your hard disk space if you want everything installed. You can however opt to have just the drivers installed. Doing so will save you hundreds of Megs. You can also download installers from the HP website. I did that and burned the drivers on a CD just incase, but the supplied install CD worked just fine.

After installing the driver/software, I was able to do pretty much everything the all-in-one promised. However, I have not tested the fax function yet. I also noticed after installation that by pressing the scan button repeatedly, it cycles through my PC''s installed photo editing software even Word! This allows you to dictate the scanner where to send the scanned image immediately after scanning. The time and date on the printer''s LCD screen also adjusted automatically based on the time and date I have on my PC!

If you have an answering machine on the same telephone number, make sure you follow the manual on how to hook it up so that the fax machine can still receive faxes by "listening" to incoming messages and detect a fax tone while your answering machine is recording. I have yet to test this feature but I think HP did a great job and did everyone a favor by doing this.

Prints from the 5510 surprisingly came out very nice looking even on draft mode and on plain paper. Scanning using the auto-document feeder is not the fastest but was not slow either. It produced a very crisp and clear scanned image directly onto my software of choice destination. Copying in fast mode produced a good enough copy of my son''s colored school calendar, which is now held by a couple of magnets against our refrigerator door. Like I said, I will have to test the fax capabilities although it does sport a fast 33.6kbps modem and supports black and color faxing, enabling you to transmit and receive color faxes.

All in all, I am very happy with this HP5510v all in one. However ...

Cons:

I knew it did not come with a USB cable so I had to get that before the printer arrived. Fortunately I knew where to get a USB cable cheaper as those things can run from $24 and up adding to the cost of the printer!

When I was doing the pen alignment utility feature as per the printer''s instructions, it could not find the pen alignment sheet on the scanner when I tried to follow the paper orientation as shown on the setup poster. I did that several times and no luck. I finally rotated the paper 180 degrees; the printer scanned it and finally said, "alignment complete". It''s funny because the same thing happened when I tested the pen alignment feature on one of the store''s display model.

The HP inks for this machine, as everybody else noted can cost a lot of money. So make sure you find the best deals when you shop for HP inks.

Enjoy and HP(Happy Printing)!

HP Designjet T1300 44'' Large-Format Inkjet ePrinter

I work for a general contracting company and we just replaced a 10 year old hp plotter with this with the intention to speed up the plan printing process for subcontractors. Sure, this plotter prints a bit faster and has nearly no down time between drawings but the fabric paper catcher is completely useless. It makes the prints pile together in tight rolls. Let me restate our purpose for purchasing a new plotter: To save time. It takes more time to sort out the small rolls of plan sheets and stack them together than the printer saved from just printing faster than our old one. Seriously, I don''t understand how this stood up in the testing phase of this product''s development. Now we have to rig something together to stack the sheets as they print. Such a tacky thing to add to an otherwise nice looking new machine. It''s very unfortunate and I am extremely displeased with this plotter.

I would advise you to buy from another Amazon related provider.

Ordered the Hp 96/97 Combo set cartridges (remanufactured, by LD). Works as new products. My 3 year old black hp 96 was dying on me so the price was too good to pass up. 5 cartrdiges plus photo paper for less than the price of ONE cartridge at retail? No brainer here. Not even a wholesale club can beat that! It turns out my tri color is still working. I''m an advanced user, so I can refill my cartridges as necessary. I''ve gotten about 12-20 refills before the either the sponge or the print head/ribbon begins to mess up print quality. My expectation is that these cartridges will last me 2-3 years on the volume that I print. Two minor issues-not worth mentioning.. manufacture dates on the cartridges recieved varied by almost 1 year and one of the color cartridge boxes was crushed inside the package, but as I said all works ok (sofar). Reseller: 4inkjets! My research shows they are at or near the top of cartridge resellers.

These recycled HP cartridges seem to print ok, but no where in the item description was it apparent that they will show up as "empty" when you put them in there''s a little slip of paper when you open the box saying the electronics in the cartridge can''t be reset because it would violate a copyright. I think that should have been made apparent before I made the purchase.

I have also purchased recycled Canon cartridges from this vendor and have not experienced any problems there.

Print quality is at least good, or even very good. I printed several pictures on photo paper and there was no readily observable problem. I did not do a side-by-side comparison with OEM cartridge output, so it is possible there may be some subtle tint difference or shortcoming in shadow detail, but certainly nothing that would be a problem for casual use.

I have always bought brand new cartridges when purchasing for my ink jets and have never had a problem. I can tell you that I threw away the first color cartridge I bought. It printed a regular color page very faint and a photograph even worse! Guess you get what you pay for. My second color is working pretty well but I think I will stick to brand new from now on. Fooled me once!

Inkjet Station Silver Metallic Photo Paper, 11"X17"

Inkjet Station Silver Metallic Photo Paper, 11''X17''

  • 260g/10mil.
  • Beautiful Metallic Silver Semi-Gloss Finish
  • Compatible with Epson and HP printers, Dye and Pigment Ink (Photo Black Pigment)
  • Recommended to be finished with Print Shield

For my packaging design project I''ve been looking for several months for some metallic inkjet paper that is not white paper with pearl finish but silvery, light grey metallic paper. I''ve tried printing on silvery art paper I bought from art supplies stores, but as they were not meant for printers, the end results were horrible. I''ve thought of printing on pearl or metallic photo papers from Canson or Inkpress, but I noticed they were almost always just white paper with pearl finish. As my last attempt I found this Inkjet Station paper. I had never seen this brand in any of the paper stores or art supplies stores in my area, so I was doubtful about its quality. Oh well, I was in a hurry and thought I''d just try and see, since other papers were not a good fit anyway. But when I received the paper and opened the package, I was thrilled to see the silver paper! Although t was just a tiny bit darker than the ideal silver tone I desired, this was totally going to work fine with my packaging. I printed from Epson Photo Black 4900 on this paper, and my project looked amazing because of the hint of silver tone underneath bright colors. This paper may NOT work for photographs because it is not white. But for those who''d like to print their design projects on silver paper from your inkjets, this is it. I highly recommend it and will totally buy Inkjet Station''s papers again.

The "metallic" finish of this paper is more like a bunch of rather obvious sparkles embedded into the paper itself. It''s made very well and has a good weight and finish, but my prints look pretty stupid on it because the sparkles are so large. Other than the sparkles (when the paper is curved so that they reflect light) the paper is very dull and grey, and did not make my photos "pop" at all... I prefer the boring old Epson Luster to this for sure, and am pretty dissappointed in the overall finished product. Just for reference, I''m using an Epson Stylus Pro 7800 inkjet printer.

You can do any number of creative projects on this machine and with the help of the software you don''t have to be very knowledgeable to do it. I am impressed with the quality of the black text printing as well it has a clear crisp look to it. The software installation was quick and easy and there''s a very low learning curve for this machine. All in all, I''m well satisfied.

Printers are the new writing tool for humanity. As a result we all want good ones, some cheap and some not so cheap. As you are reading this you must be thinking why am i writing such an ambiant message. The lexmark x 75 printrio is not as good as everyone tells you. First of all it prints nowhere newar the highest speed the company tells you, even at the fastest settings. That is the main fault. Another fault is that the scanning takes forever. You''d rather buy a 10 dollar scanner, because thats what its worth. Also the copying is extremely slow, it usually takes about 2 minutes to compy a one page document. It looks good, but its so had to put in the paper, you would think with such a famous printer it would be easy but its not. Theres a special piece of plastic which you have to pull, and if i don''t my paper gets wrinkled. If you want a good printer for a good price don''t go for this one. And don''t listen to others messages, because they probably want'' to make money, because they work for the company. In conclusion i believe this is a bad buy, don''t believe everything you read, but believe me "Look at how low their stock is doing, then see if you wan''t to buy the lousy printer."

This is My second lexmark product.

As usual this thing prints NOWHERE near the speeds it says it can.

The scaning feature is also Slow not just to slow for the Office, Its just Plain SLOW.

Of course you gotta love the Lexmark ink cartridges, if you dont print anything for say a Month, then one day decide to print something you must go down to your local Walmart (or wherever) and buy a new Ink Cartridge.

Why you ask? because the ink drys up ALL the TIME. this is my second lexmark and my first one had the same Ink problem..

where as my Hp has never had that problem.

Save yourself a Headache pay a little more and buy a Hp,cannon or epson.

Lexmarks are JUNK.

The key words here are "for the price". If you look real hard, you can find this as a refurbished unit for a little more than half of a C note, with cartridges, which is what I did. This unit is great for low demand work, as a second (backup) printer or if you need a scanner / copier but don''t have one.

Ok, this is not going to break any speed records, But the quality of printouts is pretty good. If you are looking for perfection, go spend a lot more money for 3-in-1 on something else. But this does a more than adequate job. The software seems to work well with my Win98SE, don''t know how it would be with XP, but XP drivers are available. Don''t forget once you install this go to Lexmark''s website for the updated drivers & I think you''ll be pretty happy with this!

This 3 in 1 is the very best. It is so easy to use that this old lady didn''t have to be a computer whiz to get it up and running in a matter of minutes. In my first hour of using it I made copies, sent photos and text copies to many people. They have all responded that the copies were wonderful. I am so impressed I would recommend this product to anyone. This price was great too. I feel I really got my moneys worth.

The printer is great and highly rated, but I jumped at the thoughts of having one for $335. I made the mistake of thinking that it was adjustable from 120 volts to 240 volts. NO SUCH LUCK! I am resourceful and for about $70 I bought a transformer from Litefuze model LR 1000 that converts 120 volts to 220 volts and the printer works great plugged into that. I do shut the transformer down when I am not using the printer as it draws power whether the printer is operating or not. The transformer has a power switch on the front that makes this an easy operation. I love the fact that the printer coughs out the first page in seconds and the next in rapid order. I am happy with the deal and it was definitly cheaper than buying a 120v printer of the same make and model.

I bought this printer because I thought it was cheap. It''s the most expensive printer I''ve ever bought, and I''ve paid $349.95 for a printer at one time. Let me explain: It doesn''t come with a printer cartridge or cable. It''s designed to sell ink cartridges for HP. Once the ink in either cartridge is down to 50% of capacity, it starts relentlessly sending pop up boxes saying "Ink Low" and asking if I want to "purchase ink cartridges from HP online". When this box pops up, HP designed the software to slow everything else down to a stop on the desktop while this box is slowly popping up. This is extremely time consuming just waiting for it to pop up. Once it does pop up fully, you can just click on the red ''X'' in the top right corner to proceed. This box pops up every time you print AND every hour or so. When you arrive at your computer several times a day there''s the box and any other programs grind down rrreeeaaall slow. How many times have you printed something and then changed your mind? Can''t do it with this little gem. You can click ''cancel'' in the printer queue all you like, you can wait, you can re-boot or do anything you like. This printer will not stop until it prints every page you clicked for it to print. Have you ever accidentally chosen 99 or 999 instead of 9 copies? I share this computer with other people in the household. Every time the printer malfunctions, I have to go waste 45 minutes to 1 hr (and tons of paper and ink) to get it fixed. Realistically, in the year that I''ve owned it, I''ve probably wasted about 50 to 60 hours (stressed out) trying to get it back going again. How much money is 50 hours of your life worth?

It''s the loudest printer I''ve ever heard (including Dot Matrix). It snaps and pops, gurgles and burps. For this reason, you can''t print anything while someone else in the house is asleep.

I''ve owned many different printers (all kinds of brands) but I''ll never own another HP product.

This printer does a very nice job, but I had some installation problems. I thought I followed the instructions, but was ready to uninstall and reinstall when an installation screen I had not seen appeared and finished the installation. My advice is to ignore the "found new hardware" Windows installation routine, even if the installation disc is in the drive. Instead, try getting the installation disc to make the installation.

It is an inexpensive printer, but soon becomes more costly when you run out to buy a USB cord and a #21 black ink jet cartridge. Neither of these is included in the box. Together, they double the cost of the printer. Lately, you can get a printer that also scans for that money, although it probably needs some extras, like a USB cord, too. It will print with the #22 color cartridge, but that is an expensive way to do it.

This printer prints only. It does not scan or anything else.

I don''t need a fancy printer. This is about as basic as you can get and it''s fine. My major complaint is that I have to replace one or the other ink cartridge about every 2 months and I don''t do a lot of printing. I''m wondering if anyone else has this problem.

My daughter bought me this printer when my old one died. It has been a big disappointment. If I can get it to prints at all if prints the bottom half of the page in red. From the start it said it was running out of black ink and this is a new printer! When I tried to buy a black ink cartradge could not find any for this model.

I am saving up to buy a printer that will work and I can find ink for it.

Printer did not have a black cartridge or the USB connector. It took seven painful installs before the driver finally took. It is woefully slow and uses quite a bit of color ink.

You can get some spectacular results by increasing saturation &/or vibrance a little in your photos prior to printing on this canvas. This canvas provides a startling level of vibrance making photos printed on something like canon''s platinum papers look flat and dull, whereas images printed on this product just POP off the canvas! I HIGHLY recommend this paper to those looking to print on canvas! (I used a Canon ix6520 printer to print on this canvas).
