I love 5 x 7; it is large enough for single subjects or small groups, but small enough to hang or place anywhere. Plus, the ink needed is reasonable compared to 8 x 10!

This Kodak Ultra Premium is excellent. Side by side with Canon Glossy II, I cannot spot any differences when using with a Pixma Pro9000 Mk II, which I simply set to Glossy II to get the right results. Comparing the two brands before printing, again, identical on the glossy side--both the same bright, eggshell white.

The paper is stiff enough for framing or photo albums or taping to the wall without any curling whatsover.

All of the half dozen packs I''ve purchased indicate made Germany.

Sad day when this is no longer on the shelves.

Ok, I am going to focus on one area here that has been under-referenced by the other reviews. Those reviews, by the way, are excellent, and provide a thorough review of the product and its capabilities.

The label cartridges for this unit are way too pricey. At $17-21 per cartridge, they are roughly double the cost of refills for other label makers, and represent 50% of the cost of the unit itself! It appears to be a continuation of the HP/Epson scam of selling you an inkjet printer at a loss, and making it back on the printer cartridges over time.

The unit itself is nice, easy, and pleasant to use; as I said, other "most helpful" reviews will cover the unit''s abilities in ways I need not echo. But as an ongoing cost, the price of the label cartridges is a sore spot. Also note that the unit ships with a "sample" label cartridge that contains a 4 meter tape less than half of what the normal cartridge carries. C''mon Epson, if you''re going to rip me off on cartridges for the life of my machine, how about a full measure to get me started!

If the price per cartridge drops below $12 each, my review goes up to 5 stars.

Since I bought my first Brother label maker many years ago, I have been a big fan of label makers. They make organizing paper at home and at the office quick and convenient. I also used a label maker to label the drawers on my toolbox. You may use a label maker to label light switches and other miscellaneous controls and devices. I have even used a label maker to label boxes. Yes, I still have a Brother label maker and I still use it. I was glad to have the opportunity to review a different brand for comparison and to see how much label makers have evolved since I bought my last one, half a decade ago.

The Good Stuff:

This label maker has many interesting features. It has an array of symbols and frames (boxes and borders) that is beyond stunning. If there are labels you use often, you can save up to fifty of them. You may change the space between letters, go vertical, and even print them with a mirror image.

This label maker also prints bar codes. While you may think bar codes are only for work, inexpensive bar code readers can help you with a home inventory, or categorizing collections. This device will print index label tabs for files, which I plan to use, cable labels or flags, as some people call them, and wrapped labels. The array of features seems to be phenomenal and well beyond the features I have had available in the past.

Epson provided samples of some of the many tapes they plan to offer. Be advised that the label maker only comes with one sample tape, 12 mm black on white. Epson will also be offering colored tape, tape in different widths, glow-in-the-dark tape, and even iron-on tape that you might use for uniform nametags.

One of the big selling points with this label maker is that it uses relatively small margins on either end, meaning waste is relatively minimal. I consider this feature a big plus because the tape is expensive.

The display is cool. It has a backlight that a user may switch on or off. The backlight contrast is adjustable as well.

The label maker has options for multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, European Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and German.

The back of the label maker has a location for a loop you may use to attach the label maker to your belt or place it around your neck. Epson is supposed to be offering an AC adapter if you want to avoid the expense of the six AA batteries it takes to power the label maker.

The Down Sides:

This label maker has all sorts of cool features that give it advantages over the three Brother label makers I have used. Unfortunately, there are a couple of few downsides as well.

The biggest downside is choosing the font size. On the Brother label makers, choosing the font is as easy as pushing a couple of buttons on the front panel and selecting until you have the size you want. The Epson requires you to hit a button and choose number of lines. Once you choose number of lines, then you need to choose a font size. I experimented a little to figure out how to do a couple of things. For example, you can print a small or large font on the top or bottom of a label, but you need to make the other line blank. I kept printing labels while trying various combinations to figure out how to accomplish that format. Therefore, if you want a small label near the top of a label, select two lines, hit enter, then select that you want a small font as the first line and hit enter again. When you enter the label, hit enter to create the second line and print. If you forget the second line, you get large font in the middle of the label.

I was surprised that this label maker does not seem to have a feature to let you position lines left, right or middle. The fancier Brother label makers let you do all three, and I tend to use the centering feature with multiple lines. While unnecessary, I think it looks better.

I tried looking for tape cartridge refills on Epson''s web site and on Amazon, without success. Epson needs to make the refills widely available. The tape does seem to be available in Europe. The current price seems somewhat comparable to Brother label maker tape. With the smaller borders, that should mean less waste, making the Epson tape effectively cheaper.

What do you buy?

This label maker offers many features over comparable Brother label makers. While getting the font size correct required a bit of playing around, I think I have that down. I like less waste, and the smaller margin does that. If I need wider margins, either I can set label length through the tools button or I can add spaces. The only problem I have right now is getting my hands on more tape cartridges.

I think the Epson LW-400 is a winner and offers enough features over comparable Brother label makers that this label maker is going to be my new default label maker from now on.

Labelmakers remind me of the episode of Seinfeld in which George labels everything and it all peels off. Labelmakers have come a long way since then.

I''ve used a few in the past. Generally they are limited and clumsy. The LW-400 was extremely portable and comfortable to use with one hand. With my other labelmakers I often had to consult a cheat guide to figure out exactly how to get the results I wanted. The Epson was very intuitive and some of the key features were printed on the back. I had no problems quickly getting up to speed.

The symbol library was extensive (and needed a manual). When space is limited, a picture as they say, speaks 1000 characters and while it didn''t have 1000 characters it did have several hundreds.

In particular, this was designed for the mobile technician. While it had standard labeling it had MULTIPLE options for labeling cables allow vertical and horizontal place and mirroring so that way the tag could be seen by both sides. Now you have no excuse not to mark everything (which port is workstation 7?)

Typical of most portable labelmakers, this one uses lots of batteries (6 AAA), but I found that my rechargables worked just fine. The labels came in a variety of sizes and colors and were easy to peel and place. No problems with them falling off (unlike George''s labelmaker). There is an AC adapter option, but that obviously impacts its portability.

Some others reviews pointed out a lack of fonts. This wasn''t a problem with me as I was more concerned with the placement of the text and the variety of print options. Instead of printing two copies of a label and sticking them together to mark a cable I now had an options to print one long cable and mirror the text.

Overall a great label printer for mobile technicians.

If you want one of those, instead of using 8 AA batteries, you have to buy it for $25 from Epson directly because no one sells it including Amazon. That is a joke. It''s the same price as the machine itself just to get the adapter. Retarded. I wouldn''t have been so upset if it was clearly labeled that the adapter was missing. Finding out after the fact was just plain annoying.

I have to echo what so many have said about this unit. It works beautifully and is fun to use. But I cannot in good conscience spend such a ridiculous amount of money for replacement tapes! Printer ink is crazy expensive, too, but I grit my teeth and pay for it because I cannot get by without printing. But I can get by without making labels, and so I have just put this product away and not bought any replacement tapes/labels.

I print many photos. I have been using Canon printers for this job for 2 years now. I have tried other papers with the printers and most do a okay job. But I do notice a difference in quaility when closely looked at with the Canon Pro paper. I print a lot of 8 X 10"s. And the Canon Pro Glossy just really jumps out at you. If you were going to print a bunch of wallet size photos you can probably save a couple cents by using the cheaper no name paper. I have even scanned a bunch of B&W snapshots that my father took during WWII and enlarged them and printed them on the Canon paper. They all looked great.

I was nervous about my first experience printing on canvas and thought that buying a whole roll might be too extravagent but this printed fantastic. At first I was wasting some of it but then checked my settings on my Epson R2000 and it has a paper saving option to check so that took care of that. I could have also used the bounding box and just moved the prints that are smaller than 19 inches closer to the edge of the print. I really cannot say how pleased I am with this product. I did use a sealing spray made for injet prints.

I am sold on this and ordering more.

In my experience it is more suited for artwork as opposed to photography as the texture adds a little something to the artwork but can detract from some photographs.

You push the button, choose the type of scan (PDF, Image), and then you have the choice of choosing which network connected computer to scan to.

I have an iMac (with OS X AND Win7 on it via VM Ware), a MacBook Pro, an Acer Laptop, a Dell XPS, and a clone PC

If the computers are on and connected to my network, they all show up in a list to choose from

You choose the computer, then press SCAN and it starts to scan

I tried it on all my computers & platforms & it worked flawlessly! Great software!

I absolutely LOVE Canon''s MP Navigator. It pops up, the scan is saved into it, and you''re ready to use the file. AWESOME!!!

Wireless Setup:

Super easy! Tell the machine you want to use Wireless and it looks for wireless access points (routers)

You select your router and enter a password if you use one (I do)

It then connects and that''s it! You''re done!

To set up your computer to talk to the printer, just install the software & let it run through the install

Your computer will detect the printer and whoala! You''re ready to print (or scan or fax) over wireless!

Canon definitely rocks in this department and setting up the MX892 over my MX860 for wireless was even simpler.

Faxing:

Super simple. Plug in your phone line, and it''s pretty much ready to fax

There''s also quite a few settings (tone/pulse/phone priority/machine name & number registration, etc)

But right out of the box you can plug it in & it''ll fax (I tried it. It worked!)

Printing:

It prints quicker than my MX860 does

The ink tanks look a little smaller and if it''s like the 860 I''m sure it''ll eat through them like water

I notice the ink will evaporate if you don''t use it (I don''t print a lot & the ink just "disappears") I swear it''s alcohol based

I bought off-brand ink for the 860 & never had a problem, I''m sure this will be the same

Copying:

Worked perfect!

Lift the lid, put something on the copy glass, select the # of copies, and press copy

Out comes your copy.

It has lots of bells & whistles (enlarge/shrink/scan to duplex, etc), but I just use it as a basic copier and it works great

Software:

Canon''s printing software has to be some of the best out there. I''ve tried lots of others and I''m hooked on Canon

Super easy install, super easy to use, and it "just works!" Every time!

No hoky monkey business to scan or print or fax, just easy to use buttons to get you moving

There''s some extra''s in there (calendars, photo layouts, etc). I printed a calendar & it did pretty well

Extra''s:

I tested some of the downloadable templates on the printer

The calender templates are pretty cool

Reliability:

Yet to be seen. I''m not holding my breath

My MX860 lasted just over 2 years before the internal power supply died

Came in one day & it was dead. No way to fix it. Hello garbage can!

My previous Canon MFP had the print head go bad

I''ve read that the HP''s/Epson''s/Brother''s are more reliable & drink less ink, but the Canon functionality (being able to actually SCAN over wireless AT the machine) and ease of use of the software still make it work for me

I''d much rather have a machine that I can actually use & have to replace it every few years than fight & grumble with a "reliable" machine that won''t do what I need it for

Thoughts:

If you''re looking for an easy to set up, easy to use Multi-function printer, then look no farther. Setup couldn''t be simpler and it just works. Every time!

The Canon MFP''s do drink ink like it''s going out of style (my MX860 actually EVAPORATED ink), so just use off-brand ink & call it good.

The machine is smaller than the Epson Workforce or the HP 8600 series (shorter) although it takes up just about as big of a footprint. But I like not having to use a stool to use the top of it

Time will tell how well this one will hold out, hopefully longer than the MX860, but I''m happy with it so far.

Printing:

Definitely prints faster than the old MX860 did

Print quality is noticeably better too

The cartridges seem to be lasting longer.

Scanning (Via Wireless AT THE MACHINE):

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS FEATURE!!!

One improvement over my MX860 is that it remembers the last set of settings used

You don''t have to reselect which computer you want it to go to. It chooses the last one used. AWESOME!!!!

The MX860 made you choose which computer you went to every single time you scanned

With 5 computers running at any given time in the house, but usually scanning to just one repeatedly (Win7 via VMWare on the iMac), it''s been a godsend to be able to just walk up to the machine, press SCAN, and it scans to the right machine!

Faxing:

Again, flawless...and FAST!!!

From a cold boot, the machine is ready to fax in about 15-20 seconds

From the machine booted, it''s almost instant

Load the document feeder, press FAX, enter the number & press Black & White or Color and away it goes!

Love it!

Wireless:

Rock solid! It''s never left the network

My MX860 would sometimes disappear from the network & come back (wasn''t for long, but it was annoying sometimes), this one NEVER leaves the network and if you have to reboot it, it finds the network FAST!!!

I actually shot about 20+ minutes worth of footage for this review, and had to seriously trim it down to fit inside of Amazon''s size requirements. So, a lot of the footage of me walking you through the setup steps had to be sacrificed. I was especially pained to have to trim the detailed steps I filmed of getting the Google Cloud Print functions up and running. So, if you have questions for me about setup, especially about getting the Google Cloud Print up and running, leave them in the comments, and I will do my best to answer them. The short of it is, go download the latest firmware exe from the Canon support page for the printer, plug in a USB cable to the printer and your computer, double click the exe, open the folder it creates, and run the update program in there. After that, run the setup process from the "Web" menu, and tell it to register a Google Cloud Print account, it will print out a paper which has a QR code and a URL (you can use either/or) to link the printer with your Google account. After that, you can print from Google services that support doing so, such as the Google Cloud Drive.

Overall, this is a very good printer. We had previously purchased the MG6120 and that was working very well for us. This new one uses the same ink cartridges that the 6120 did, so that is nice. I hate it when the printer companies change which cartridges you have to get, with each new model. The main differences between the MX892, and our old model, is the MX892 has a fax function (which I will never use), and it supports printing "from the cloud" -which is the same thing as saying "from the internet" (honestly, marketing people give me headaches >.

I use this product to cut felt shapes from a template. It''s the best way to get clean sharp edges without having to mark on the actual fabric. It also helps me use every bit of the felt. I can trace my pattern and arrange extra pieces to use the unused space. The Epson Workforce 520 uses 5 ink cartridges, 2 black and 3 color so the dual twin pack is a good buy. I highly recommend it. I can''t say that I''ve found a great improvement in print quantity between the regular cartridge T125 and the high caacity cartridge T126 but I don''t count the pages printed either. For that reason I tend to buy T125, but I always get the dual twin pack black T125. Both T125 and T126 will work fine and Amazon is dependable for delivery, always a few days before expected. I Like Amazon.

The cartridges themselves are unbranded and bubble-wrapped, not packaged as shown on the Amazon product page. I''m giving it the same rating I gave the 50 size packages of the same paper. BUT NOT HAPPY CAMPER with finding out I ordered both the 50 and the 25 size packages of the SAME EXACT PAPER. Only I paid approx 20.00 dollars per two 50 packs and 20.00 for three 25 packs thus making the 75 sheets 25% more expensive. You could not tell from the descriptions given that these were the same paper but they came and it was clear they were. So that''s shameful on the sellers or HP perhaps for not making it clear these are basically the same paper only in different size boxes by number of sheets contained. As far as the rating for the paper goes. It does a great photo quality on both my old HP printer now 12 years old and my new EPSON R2000 printer almost a year old. So that''s fine. What I do not like is the ghosted printing on the nonglossy photo side. I bought this paper to save weight and thickness in layering different medias together...and when I can''t print text on the flip side that sort of undoes what the whole idea of thinner paper is about. So I like it and I probably will use it again but will also look for other paper that competes and does not have a ghost print on the flip side...preventing it''s use when needed or wanted by the consumer that''s me. So it lost a star and then some over that. I hope HP is listening but really most of us do not need help with this paper anyway figuring out which is the photo side. I didn''t and rarely have ever. SO STOP DOING THAT...or offer us a choice and I bet you soon find that most consumers or customers prefer the advantage to using the flip side too. It''s thinner and unfortunately my design of a 6 panel card this year did not prevent me from having to add that exttra 20 cents onto the cards for postage. I had hoped as last year I used thicker and heavier paper for an 8 panel card and still it was only 20 cents more too. At least it wasn''t more:)))) But I suspect I would have saved the 20 cents extra charge had I not been forced to glue on 4 extra sheets for the flip side of the cards for my printing and text materials. It certainly undid the whole reason to go with lighter weight photo paper this project.
