Bottom-line, double check before you shop for replacement toner. This is a very confusing product, in that respect. Lexmark pushes recycling and the boxes have labels to return the toners.

My over all impression is that I really love it. The copy functions are simple and familiar symbols or labels. Software (printer drivers) are easy to update I hope they will!

This design is a little bit outdated, but for the price, it''s a great way to get into an affordable color laser printer, that is clean, simple, and intuitive. The only interactive display is a tiny 10 letter display (most new printers have an LCD). The user manual is in HTML format, so find the menu map and print it out. You can get there through that tiny front panel, but it takes a lot of time and a little patients. (I hope it has a Factor Reset option, if I ever mess this up...)

Overall, I think this is a very affordable color printer. And, a full set of replacement toner cartridges (a set of 4 can run $3-450) almost costs as much as the original printer. So, you may not want to stock up on new toner just plan to buy a new printer. Seriously!

But, don''t worry about the printer functions it''s laser sharp. The ink is durable, but it will smear if you get the paper wet. It won''t survive a coffee spill.

Pros: Solid color laser printer; accurate scanner with sheet feeder, copier functions. Mac drivers.

Cons: Toner is hard to find, confusing/deceptive; no single sheet over-ride; no scanner app.

Note: I did not test this printer with Windows.

Since I wrote this review, I have upgraded from Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to 10.7 (Lion). A lot changed the scanner function now is found on the printer driver (click on the printer in "Printers" or from the icon on the dock). The SCAN function is at the top of the usual PRINT window. Regardless, the scanner function is unreliable it frequently just quits responding with no error messages. I have to cycle power on the printer to get it scanning again.

Second MAJOR disappointment. It will not print double sided without jamming. When I use the single sheet feeder (letterhead or envelopes), it ALWAYS jams and the paper never comes out of the printer. Something is badly misaligned or designed wrong.

FYI: An office I work in just about the X544 (this year''s model of the same thing) and it failed even worse. Sheet feeder will not work. They sent it back and opted for an HP that cost twice as much.

My high rating (4 stars) reflects the value of the printer. It''s a great printer for single sided work and medium capacity office printing. Just don''t expect the other features to work (i.e. single sheet, envelope or double sided printing).

Also, it has developed a squeeky roller wheel after running about two cases of paper through it over 2 years.

GOOD Value, just not as feature rich as it would appear.

The printed output from the x543 is great. Crisp, colorful exactly what I''d hoped. And, it''s reasonably quiet. Double-sided printing works perfectly (though it does slow output). Contrary to what the previous reviewer said, I am offered the option to print double-sided on every document, in every application. (And you can buy the toner right here on Amazon.)

However, the scanner is a nightmare. It takes 15 clicks for every scanned document to set up a "scan profile", choose your options, point the machine to the destination folder, get assigned a "shortcut" (ha!) for that scan job, then you go to the scanner, key in the shortcut on the machine itself, wait for the scan, then go back to the computer, click "launch" on the profile you created, and once again, point the machine to your destination folder.

It would be one thing if you had to do all this once to set it up, but I can tell you after 4 long calls with tech support, that you must do this for every scan. Hello? I typically scan 10-20 items/day. Can you imagine doing that whole sequence 20 times.

I''m running this on a Mac, but when I saw the problem, I installed it again in Windows 7 Ultimate, running via Parallels. Same outcome. No difference. And it''s not even clear if the company expects any better than this.(No one has said, "holy cow, it''s not supposed to work this way".)

Finally, Lexmark is the only company I''ve dealt with in 20+ years as an active computer user, to insist you allow their tech support people to remotely take over your computer (to try fixing it themselves). If you don''t agree online to a license for them to do it, they won''t help you.

Great printer (thus 3 stars, rather than one). Terrible Scanner.

This multi-functional printer comes with automatic duplex color printing,

and it has a 600dpi scanner that supports scanning from both flatbed and document feeder.

It comes with a RJ45 jack to support network printing/scanning, and it supports Windows''s WSD protocol so the printer is automatically detected and installed without hassle.

It supports PostScript printer language, so no problem printing from other operating system such as Linux.

Another good thing is that it comes with a web interface, scanning can be done on any browser that supports Java applets, without the need of a driver, which is a big plus for dual boot user like me. The web interface can also be used to check printer status like cartridge life, and to manage settings, so basically no need to play with the small 2-line LCD console.

One shortcoming is that it doesn''t support duplex scanning, and duplex printing is slow, but that''s no big deal considering the 450$ price tag.

Printer works well over ethernet, not much to complain about there

The toner that comes with the printer runs out after about 50~100 pages of very light color use(text and small images)..... Pretty much a demo scam for the ink. My 3 other Dell Color Laser printers all lasted over 1000 pages at the same usage level...

Buyer bewarethe toner cost must be factored into the purchase of the printer in less than a month or so of ownership.

I had no trouble setting up this printer according to manufacturer''s instructions. This included installing the drivers and physically taking the printer out of the box, removing all the tape, setting up all the trays, etc. My problem seems to be a physical/mechanical problem with the printer itself. When I went to register the printer, there were instructions to tell the printer to print out a few pages of information so that I could get the SID to register the printer. After following the directions, the printer printed out 3 pages that had unreadable blank streaks on the right side of the page such that I couldn''t read the SID or anything else on the right side of the page along the 2 blank lines (about 2 cm wide) stretching from the top of the page to the bottom.

I went to the manufacturer''s website for troubleshooting and it recommended first checking that you are using the right paper, that you clean the toner cartridge head, and make sure there is adequate toner. It''s a new printer with new cartridges and I was using standard size/thickness paper. I took out the toner cartridges and wiped them all off and tapped them so that if there''s no imbalance in toner levels. The next 6 pages printed all still had the same streak. I then removed the black and white toner cartridge and replaced it with the magenta one to see if the problem was localized to that one cartridge roll. But the magenta toner printed pages with the exact same defect so it wasn''t a problem with any of the hardware associated with that particular toner cartridge''s rollers. I am guessing that there is something wrong with the photoconductor drum and it couldn''t hold a charge in the exact location where the printer couldn''t seem to print anything out.

This is a brand new printer (NOT refurbished!) straight out of the box unable to print a legible first page! For close to half a grand, I expect a printer that will at the bare minimum be able to PRINT out of the box. I never got a chance to test the scan ability of the AIO device because it was shipped back to Amazon for a refund ASAP.
