** Update: (Oct 2012) Please note that the figures in this review are probably out of date as ink prices have changed by now. I am leaving this review up but please check the price for ink vs yield yourself. FYI, the printer is still working well.

**Update: (June 30, 2011) After using this printer for a few months, I am dropping the rating to 4 stars. I am still happy with the consumption and print quality, however, the paper trays are terribly engineered. It is annoying to add paper or change paper from letter to tabloid size. Lots of misfed paper and a few paper jams. The wireless scanning software is not intuitive and works sometimes but not always.

I did some serious research on all-in-ones before purchasing this. I hope this is helpful:

I had felt burned by previous HPs and Epsons because of the cost of ink and the frequency or replacing cartridges and I was determined to find an economical printer. . . This is it.

The good:

very economical -one of the most economical all-in-one inkjets available based on extensive research

wireless printing works great

wireless scanning works great

11x17 printing and scanning

prints reliably and quickly

Areas for improvement:

had some minor paper jams till I learned to load the paper exactly right.

paper tray is somewhat inconvenient because you have to remove the whole thing to load it.

limited options for print quality settings

I compared printers based mostly on ink cost/ page yield. Some of the better performers are listed at the bottom of this review. My research showed that each printer brand offers ink cartridges that are far more economical than others from the same brand. Brother''s best value cartridge (for all-in-ones) is the LC-65 or LC-79. HP''s best value cartridge is the HP940XL. Epson''s is the 127 , Lexmark''s is the 105XL/ 100XL, Canon''s is the PGI-7/ PGI-9.

I chose this Brother MFCJ6510DW because the cost per page for the Brother LC79 cartridge was one of the very best ($.0333 per page avg.) and the LC79 cartridges are very large so don''t need to be replaced as often. (2400 pages black, 1200 color). Compare this to my old Epson CX9400FAX. ($.0595 per page avg., 370 pages BW and 500 pages color with the Epson 68 cartridge) My old HP was even worse.

Read this article here:

I was a little skeptical cause I''d never purchased a Brother. It is not as nicely designed as HP or Epson but it is OK looking. I like that it can print (and scan) 11x17. Wireless printing was pretty easy to setup and it works great. You can even scan and wirelessly send the scans to you computer. (worked the first time). The only problem I''ve had with it is some minor paper jams but I learned that you have to load the paper tray just right and it hasn''t happened since. The paper tray is a bit inconvenient cause you have to remove the whole thing to add paper (like old full-size copy machines).

I''ve had it for about a month and have printed a 2" thick stack of 8.5x11 color prints (with about 30% page coverage) on the highest setting and still haven''t run out of ink from the original (non-high-yield) cartridges. I haven''t tried many of the other funstions except scanning and printing but I will re-post if anything comes up. . .

Purchased it 5/31/11. It arrived 6/2/11. Loved that. Got started right away. First night wireless setup to wireless router went relatively smooth. Not knowing the wireless router WPA Key password was just about the only hick-up. Spent the first weekend loading the print and scan drivers to MAC OS X 10.6 and PC WIN 2000. Problems began. The MAC loading went relatively smooth. The PC loading became frustrating. I think more so because I did not know all the network lingo so setup errors were made which created more frustrating errors. Spent the second weekend working on the PC setup errors. Finally things started to operate as advertised. I began to realize a few network settings on the Brother were best if they were changed from the default setting, and the network settings on the PC were not matching up with what the Brother was set to. Now everything operates as advertised. So far no paper jams experienced. I use 11x17 scan all the time. It saves me time on how many scans I need to do if I am scanning multiple receipts, pics, or docs. Fax works better than expected. Love the fax preview feature. It saves on paper. Absolutely love the distinctive ring feature which makes for a hands-off approach to receiving faxes. The telephone line stays plugged in, and I never have to worry if the call is a fax or a person. The distinctive ring feature does all the work. Copy quality is 97% exact to the original copy with standard settings. Print speed is slow to start, however cranks out the remaining sheets fairly quickly. In fact, the pages literally shoot out of the printer so be sure the output "stop guide" is engaged. Love the PaperPort software. Makes document and photo manipulation/correction a cinch. Used the Brother to help me scan/compile my documents for a loan application. Was able to compile and send all requested documents in easy to view, read, and secure PDF format the same day the documents were requested. The Brother is loaded with more features than advertised. Unlike other machine features which are additional, these extras actually come in handy and are useful time/money saving features. Love the mechanical design. Love the front loading placement of the ink cartridges. Love the easiness and cleanliness of inserting and replacing the ink cartridges. No ink replacements have been necessary yet. It''s size is as advertised, however it fits on the home-office table exactly where the previous fax machine was located. So not feeling the pinch for space. Overall: the only regret--not having bought the MFC-J6710DW as it has dual paper tray capability. Not because use of the machine is so often, but because scratch paper is used to save on cost of printing on regular paper. Had I bought the MFC-J6710DW, scratch paper would be loaded in one tray, while regular paper would be loaded in the second tray. Hence, eliminating the need to swap in/out scratch & regular paper.

There''s not much negative that I can say at this point. I purchased this printer due to the specifications I found attractive: Large Print/Scan/Fax (11x17), Wireless, automatic Duplex Printing. I have not tested the faxing, as I rarely use it. But it looks like the software allows you to fax from your computer quite easily -e.g., print to a virtual "fax printer".

Setup was quite easy, and was done in about 15 to 20 minutes without any problem. That included unpacking, powering the printer, installing the ink, self-test, and setting up the wireless. Once that was done I downloaded the latest drivers from the Brother website (there is a drivers disk included, but may as well make sure you''re getting the latest; the web address is in the quick setup manual). After that, everything worked as expected.

I was able to scan to a USB device, which allowed me to save as PDF or TIFF. I then specified "Scan to File" and it scanned wirelessly to my computer as a JPG. If you really want to know all the modes and formats, you can go to the Brother website and download the instruction manual for the printer.

Duplex printing worked great. I printed two ~60-page documents in duplex mode and when it was done it was ready to hole-punch and put into a folder. No paper jams. So much easier than trying to do that manually!

To be sure, this is a hefty printer and you should consider where you''ll put it. As for speed, this may not be the fastest printer on the block, but for the casual printer''er I''m fine with a slower output. I usually set the print quality to "Best" and let it do its thing.

I''ll update this review if there is anything significant to report.

I use this machine for our company and it has performed well. It has every function you need if you are working with 11x17 paper sizes or smaller. The software it comes with is great but you need to be somewhat computer savvy to figure out how to use it to its full potential. I would recommend going ahead and spending a couple extra bucks to get the one with two paper decks. This one only has one and if you need to switch paper sizes it is a pain. It is inevitable that you will need both paper sizes. Also, we already have a copier and fax but this is a excellent backup if one of them goes down.

The only problem I really encountered is that it does not have ink cartridges that last very long. It really needs to have a better ink cartridge for the black ink. It is also a pain to purchase the cartridges. The biggest quantity you can order is two and you can''t order them in bulk.

This All-in-one is a great Value. It is great for scanning in line art (pencil or ink) like I do. If you are a comic book artist, you need to be able to scan and print at 11"x17". This combo is a great solution. The scans look great and the prints, while not the best, are very usable. Pencil a page, scan it in, edit/blow it up/whatever, print out the pencils in non-photo blue on you bristol board, and ink away. The great thing about this is that you have a saved copy of you pencils ready to be reprinted if you mess up the inks. I haven''t tried the fax so I can''t comment on that, but this thing does have an automatic scan feeder. The manual single page feeder is great, because it doesn''t loop the paper like the automatic paper feeder does. This is ideal for you thicker, more expensive bristol board. I don''t use the wireless connection and the default inks seem to have a long life (so far). The best part is that this all comes in at a total of $179.99... Wow. No tax and Amazon Prime make this a steal! The cheapest 11"x17" scanner I could find was S149.99 and that is without all the other stuff this All-in-one beast has. So yeah, do yourself a favor buy this NOW!

We needed this product for the cash register at work and it is exactly what we needed. The black ribbon is dark and comes out clearly. We were weary of buying the ink online because we did not know if it would fit the register exactly but it turns out the purchase was spot on. We couldn''t order it with the company because they did not have it in stock but we are glad that we found it on Amazon and were able to purchase it at a good price.

The HP twin pack Ink cartridge is not only economically feasible, it can be used to print photos that are picture perfect. I printed out photos of my grand babies first birthday. The color was so crystal clear my family thought I had them professionally made and some asked if I had them touched up.

Print as many lasting memories as you want. I have only used one twin pack in the past 10 months. Great customer service and a great product for a great price..you can''t go wrong!

Hi,

In your printer profile, select preferences, then

select draft mode, this saves a lot of ink.

next click Black & White (instead of Color),

this saves you more money.

rename the printer by adding B&W to the name,

ie HP 890C B&W. Use this as your default printer.

add a second printer using the same model you have now.

You now have two logical printers but only one physical printer.

Rename it HP 890 Color for example.

When you need color for the kids reports or greeting cards,

send the print to the color printer, otherwise send to B&W printer.

You can do this with any printer, even at your office to

save on toner if it is a laser.

James

I bought this ink deal. It was delivered as promised, even before it was promised. It is not the ink that is advertized in the picture or in the description. Doing just a bit of detective work on the internet shows that this product is a product member of Made-In-China.com. That in itself is not bad but there claim that you will receive HP ink in original HP packaging is CRAP. This is really made by Linkcolor Technology Co., Ltd not by or on beahlf of HP. There is a "similar" HP sticker on the cartridge, obviously a FAKE. I cannot imagine that HP would embrace this use of their name in the selling of ink products made by Linkcolor Technology Co., Ltd. Here is a bit more about the manufacture

LINKCOLOR Technology Co., Ltd. is professional manufacturer for inkjet cartridge and toner cartridge , our goods quality as ISO 9001:2000 & CE systerm , and got this certification .

We are specializing in producing and selling compatible/remanufactured inkjet cartridges and refill kits for Epson, Canon, HP and Lexmark inkjet printers, toner cartridges for HP laser printers.

We have Executive Dept., Production Dept., R & D Group, and Quality Control Center. Our capability is 500, 000 pieces each item per month. All the cartridges were strictly tested in printers before package. I replaced a defective HP printer for my home office business with this C320dn. Other than not being able to find toner for it locally, I have been very pleased. I use it for colored business documents as well as some photo printing on standard paper. The print quality and reliability of this printer are consistently good. I have probably run 15,000 pages of paper through it so far and there was only one ream of paper where I had feed problems. I would definitely purchase this product again, although next time I will most likely upgrade to a Ricoh machine that runs larger paper sizes.

I ordered this printer because my other color laser printer had broken. Of course, technology moves so swiftly that there were no spare parts or people willing to repair it. So I abandoned that printer which had become a large paperweight and went online researching printers.

This printer came with rave reviews and was reasonably priced for my small business needs. I am fairly technologically savvy. So, when I receive new hardware I never have problems setting it up. Further, I have Mac products which usually speak well with peripherals. that was not the case here. After three days of attempting various fixes suggested by the online guides, I was finally able to contact tech support. It was extremely frustrating as they told me without having purchased a service contract they could not talk to me--even to merely install the device! Rather than go through a litany of the miserably poor support they offer and the rudeness of their phone staff, suffice it to say I finally got to someone who was in fact helpful ...but it took three days! Ultimately, after I got it working, the print quality was marginal for color prints. So, it was determined that the product was defective. After my terrible experience with the support to their customers I did not choose to replace the defective product with another printer from Ricoh.

If you decide to purchase this, I hope you have better luck!

Brother HL-4040cn Color Laser Printer with Built-in Network Interface

Brother HL-4040cn Color Laser Printer with Built-in Network Interface
  • Up to 21ppm color and monochrome printing
  • Ethernet and Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interfaces for networking (cables not included)
  • 300-sheet paper capacity
  • High capacity replacement toner cartridges
  • PC and Mac compatible

Got this printer due to my 2 other very positive Brother Laser printers, HL5240 & MFC7840W, both excellent, fast and very reliable, the second reason is my old favorite, Konica Minolta 2300DL (Color Laser) is dying and hoping to combine the function with my still working Brother HL5240 to save space.

Involved with design and illustrations, I print 80% of my work & documents in full color or combination text & color images, in short, I''m very color sensitive.

Brother HL 4040CN is very easy to network even with Multi Window OS desktops, my home office got 2 Vista, 2 XP pro & a XP Media Center PC. Very fast and good text printing quality, actually the color is not even that bad, if I''m not that sensitive.

Pros:

Easy to install and network.

Flip up LCD minimized glare and makes it easy to read the text and ink monitoring.

Fast wake up from sleep or energy saver mode, I really like the light blinking when the machine it in progress or warming up.

Easy front access both for toner replacement, paper tray & bypass paper slot, kind of idiot proof.

Noise level when printing and warm up is comparable to my other laser printers, probably less.

Heavy and looks like it''s very well built.

USB interface on the front is a plus.

Cons:

Color prints are warmer and slightly purple & green compared to the output from my Epson Inkjet & Magicolor prints.

On the Green side, I think Brother should redesign their packaging, the unit is almost the same size as HP but the box is 100% more, it''s so big that I can''t even fit it in regular NYC yellow cab, I probably need to rent a UHAL van the next time I buy one of this.

I was trying hard to love this printer and keep it even though the color prints are a little off, not until when my nephew drops by, look at the print and said to me, "nice terrazzo floor with beige field and gray border", with that comment, I realized it''s time to return the printer, since the actually floor have white field and green borders.

In fairness, I replaced this with a HP CP1518ni, Hp is even worst, prints much darker than any of my color laser, slower than Brother, slightly prints more red & orange, not as sharp and very muddy. I end up getting another Konica Minolta, Magicolor 2550, it''s the closes match of a laser print that you could get to a decent ink jet print. But if I have to pick between Brother and HP from this experience, I''ll take Brother without hesitation. And finally.....Thank you Staples, you are the best.

I was a bit concerned by other''s reviews regarding the edges curling but tried an in-store demo prior to purchasing it at the best price I could findhere at Amazon, and didn''t find it to be a huge deal. I do find there is a slight curl but for me it seems go away as the pages sit on my desk and the color is far more superior to other demos I tested in the same price range so I''d definitely recommend this printer.

I picked this printer up at Øffice Ðepot yesterday and with some help because it weighs 64 pounds, got it home. Setup is very easy, even for someone without any experience with computer hardware. Just push a tab in, open the front, remove all the bright orange shipping things, pull out the drum unit, slide in the toner cartridges which match the letters (K into K, C into C, etc..), install the software, plug in the USB or Ethernet cable (which you supply yourself), and you are ready to print. Before you print, however, make sure you open the printer settings and configure it the way you want. Also access the printers menu and configure those. The DirectPrint option to print PDFs and JPG files from a USB drive directly is nice, but some USB drives will not work (Corsair Voyager will not). For the price it is an excellent printer, coupled with the fact that it comes with standard (not starter) toner cartriges, you can print hundreds of pages before you have to buy new toner.

Want Brother HL-4040cn Color Laser Printer with Built-in Network Interface Discount?

This is a decent color laser printer at a good price. In terms of price, the printer with toner cartridges sells for little more than the toner cartridges alone. Maybe they are buying the toner refill business by giving away the printer itself. Another plus: it connects to my router so I can share it between my wireless Mac laptop and my PC desktop (even when the PC is asleep), which is great. Now the bad news. It''s a lot bulker than it looks just by seeing the picture. Make sure it fits your room and you''re comfortable with the weight before you buy. Second, the quality is no better than the Canon Ink jet printer I replaced. Part of this is because the default setting on the HL 4040 is 600 dpi. To get the higher resolution, you have to tweak the defaults. So if you really need a color laser, this may be a great choice. But if you''re expecting it to be better than an ink jet in terms of print quality, you''ll be disappointed.

Supplementary comment: the printer says all color toner cartridges are empty when they aren''t even close to being empty. You should be able to use the cartridge until the color stops, but that''s not how it works. This is a huge waste of money (it''ll easily double your cost of cartridges). So you need to learn how to unscrew the end cover of the cartridge and reset the internal switch that is triggered after a certain number of cycles. Not a step for the average user to take nor should it be necessary. Seriously, this is a show stopper.

An excellent printer engine, industrial and massive. A bit of a company printer at a consumer entry point.

Found the documentation to be poor, the illustrations were from CAD and not very helpful at installing the cartridges for the first time.

But persistence paid off and now I can''t help but love this printer. If you need to do some volume work and don''t like fettering away monies on inadequate sized ink cartridges, this is a great way to go entry level with color laser.

After about 8 months, haven''t experienced significant paper warp or any dark color banding issues. 1/3 paid for itself in inkjet cartridge refill costs.
