This is NOT in the same class as the much more expensive 3500 series color MFPs, and it is not supposed to be. At a cost of 1/5th the bigger printers, you need to lower your expectations, but you still get a lot of printer for the money. I''ve had many inkjet printers and installed many color and BW laser printers. The first laser printer I used was an Apple LaserWriter in about 1987, so my experience with these devices is quite extensive. I have this installed in a home office networked via a simple wireless router and print/scan with XP, Vista, and Win7-64.

Positives:

+ Much faster and sharper printing than even high-quality inkjets when printing typical office documents

+ Prints evenly and consistently even large areas of highly saturated color on plain paper, unlike the banded printing from inkjets on plain paper

+ Easy to install on XP, Vista, and Win7 64 as both a USB and network printer

+ Prints at the same speed and quality regardless of how long it sits idle or off, unlike an inkjet printer that often needs cartridges replaced or cleaned after sitting idle for a couple of weeks.

+ EXCELLENT print output very sharp even at small print sizes and fine lines

Negatives:

I have the same problems as others when scanning using the sheetfeeder: Scans always come out as 8.5 x 14.

Low paper capacity. Why doesn''t EVERY printer come with a 500 sheet bin? Do manufacturers really save any money by making the smaller bin?

Manual feed is not easy to use. Basically, you need to pull out the drawer and put what you want printed in the regular drawer.

Scanning from front panel isn''t working for me, which should be easy to do. Perhaps this is the problem others indicate when they say it is hard to set up. Scanning is fine when you start it from the computer.

Won''t email without talking to a computer. I really like that feature in the more expensive models, and it shouldn''t be that difficult to implement.

Wont'' print truly photo-quality as well as a photo inkjet, but the prints on photo paper are still VERY good.

Do I REALLY need a THREE HUNDRED megabyte package of drivers and software just to print? How about a light-weight software option HP? Better yet, how about building the drivers into the printer''s built-in web server so that I don''t have to get those monster packages from the Internet? Why can''t I manage ALL settings from the built-in web pages?

-+ I wasn''t satisfied with the default scan settings, but after tweaking to boost the image quality, I am happy with the scan quality and speed.

Regarding the price of prints: Although a set of cartridges sets you back about 260 bucks, that will not get you anywhere near the $1.00+ price per page others talk about. My conservative estimate at cost is about $0.15/page in color including paper, less in B/W. If you force B/W printing for most output, you will be closer to $0.04/page. Having spent a ton of money on ink cartridges for inkjets, only to waste much of the ink on cleaning and reprints when gobs of ink land on my output, I think the overall cost of ownership will be close to even or better when compared to a typical inkjet. Counting the cost of time and frustration in the cost of using an inkjet will further weigh the cost per print in favor of the CM1312nfi.

Some other "negative" points are speed, lack of duplex scanning/printing, and some other bells and whistles mentioned in other reviews. I don''t count these negative points against this printer since these are features that you really can''t expect in this price class. I looked long and hard at the HP CM2320, but the much higher cost of entry didn''t seem to pay off for me. Including a set of cartridges, the 1312 costs 30-50% less than the 2320.

I compared this printer to Brother and Samsung MFPs at a local office supply store. The output quality, speed, and overall build quality are significantly higher than similarly priced competitors. The output quality of a color brochure copied on each of the brands is what sold me on the HP the CM1312 output is MUCH better than the other brands. I also expect to be able to service and purchase supplies for an HP long after Samsung and Brother are forgotten about.

I''d give this printer a solid 4 stars if I could get the scanning from the front panel and the auto page size recognition to work. I won''t count things against this printer that it really isn''t designed to handle, like true photo quality and high speed. Anticipating being able to work out the bugs with scanning and page size, I''ll give this a 3.5 and round up to 4 stars.

I purchased this printer instead of the 2840 due to bad driver reviews associated with the 2840. Unfortunately, the drivers for this device are bad too. Beginning with the minimum install size of 400 MB. Yes, the driver automatically installs all sorts of maintenance and other applications. No, you cannot deselect them during or after the install. The drivers also add 32 seconds to boot time for every PC I installed them on.

The upsides are that the color prints coming out of this machine are amazing. The color copy feature is awesome too. The device draws only 7.5 watts in sleep mode and it is very quiet (no loud fans running during sleep mode).

Overall printing 5 stars and driver 1 star, so I rated it in the middle. One more thing. Just FYI, I found the HP Color Laserjet 5M driver works for this printer and does not add 32 seconds or 400 MB to my PC operation. I am sure there are some features missing, but...

This is an awesome printer! For so many reasons.

1.) It''s an all in one or better yet, a 4 in one (print, copy, scan, fax). Many of the newer printers haven''t included fax recently.

2.) It''s compact shorter than the HP 2840 which is a huge monstrosity. The toner cartridges are secured horizontally (front to back) rather than vertically (top to bottom). This saves a lot of room.

3.) It''s simple and the most user friendly printer I''ve ever purchased from HP. It''s Vista operative and the software that comes with it is more of a help than a hindrance. The organization of the buttons and functions on the front panel makes sense. The color LCD screen is also easy to navigate. You won''t feel like every navigating decision will be binding like some display screens. HP combined modern technology, simplicity, and the traditional needs of an all in one to arrive at their best printer yet.

4.) It''s affordable too in comparison to the HP 2840 all in one. The toner is also less expensive than the Q6000 series of toner that is needed in the 2840 and other related LaserJet printers.

I highly recommend this printer if you have a small/home based business! Or if you just like having it all... all in one.

I received this printer as a birthday gift and looked at the reviews here before opening the box. I must admit that I was somewhat leery after reading all of the complaints, but since it was a gift I decided to give it a try. After about a month of use, I have to say that I don''t understand what all the griping is about. I have had no issues with this machine at all, using it in a home office environment.

I am using it as a network printer with drivers installed on Windows 7 (64-bit), Vista (64and 32-bit), and Mac OS-X platforms. I downloaded all of the drivers from the HP support site. Yes, it is a 300M download, but is that such a big deal these days? The one problem with the HP site is that the names of the files are somewhat cryptic. I installed the first item in the Software section that had "Full Solution" and "AM" in the title. Don''t be tempted to install the much smaller Universal Print Driver unless you are not interested in scanning.

As far as noise goes, I don''t advise switching the machine on and off frequently. Each time you do that, the printer will go through a calibration cycle that takes a few minutes and is a bit noisy. Not overly so, but perhaps enough to wake someone in an adjacent room. I checked the standby power to see how bad it was to leave it on all the time. In its deepest sleep mode it consumes about 15 watts (roughly $1.50/month). If you do decide to turn it off, you can send a print job and then walk over and switch on the printer. Your job will print before the calibration, although there is a bit of a start-up delay. When printing, it is no noiser than my old HP inkjet and several times faster. I haven''t bothered to check the actual page/min rate because the thing is so much better than what I was used to.

One thing that I have not tried is the "Additional Software" installation option that comes in the driver bundle. I think this installs scan/OCR utilities, but don''t know for sure. I''m guessing that the additional software accounts for a big part of the 300M download size. Since I already had a program that I was comfortable with (PaperPort) I just stuck with that. Network scanning works great. One of the first things that I tried was using the automatic feeder to scan a multi-page document. 600 dpi scanning is a bit slow, but 300 dpi grayscale scanning is fast and of sufficient quality for most tasks. There were some complaints about not being able to do 8-1/2 x 11 pages. I did not find that to be a problem, but I did have to go through a setup wizard in the scan software to get it to work.

As far as toner usage goes, I haven''t owned it long enough to say much. I did see several people on eBay selling refill kits in the $50 range that had good reviews. Print quality is great for text. Photos are OK, good enough for a quick print, but not a replacement for photographic paper or dye-sub printers.

Overall I am very glad that I decided to open the box. Sometimes you have to ignore the 1-stars and try it for yourself.

They missed some of the basics on this machine. There is no manual feed operation, only one paper tray. Must remove all existing paper and realign paper tray guides to print a single envelope or any other size or type of paper. This funchtion misfeeds quite often. Takes some time to set up properly. Fax has no alternate answering machine but you can plug in an external answering machine. Print quality is good but very expensive to use. Costs about $1.25 per page in toner alone. Reliability is still undetermined. Our last three HP all-in-one laserjets failed within 3 months of new purchase. Not bad if you have another mono laser printer for regular use. Driver issues still unresolved. Noticed that many of the reveiws on this machine have been removed since I checked before purchase.

My 1 year warrantee ran out 2 months ago. Scanner started to cause vertical black lines to appear on one side. There was probably dust or something on the scanner lens. I cleaned the external glass but it was no help. Since I was beyond the warrantee Samsung referred me to a service center nearby. Just for the hell of it I decided to pick up the printer and jump up and down, hoping to dislodge whatever was causing the blockage. It worked!

I had a problem like this with an old scanner and all I had to do was take off the outer glass and clean the scanner lens. But ... jumping up and down worked just as well.

Have had the machine for a year. During that time I used up the included toner cartridge and much of a replacement cartridge, with about 3400 total pages (according to the printer).

It''s given me no trouble at all. Print quality is fine (I''m a home user but I would not hesitate to use this as a small office machine).

Downsides are minor for me, but may not be for others:

1. It''s relatively loud. I have it set to go into sleep mode almost immediately so it doesn''t make any noise in between printing. But it makes a warm up whoosing sound before it prints and the printing itself is relatively noisy.

2. It''s not a network scanner. It can only scan to a computer that is connected via usb.

Other than that I really can''t say a negative thing about it.

Set up is easy, either via the on-board lcd or even better, via a web interface over the network. My advice give it a network address asap via the lcd. Then enter the address as a url in your PC''s browser and you can access all the other settings over an easy to use web page.

Have had no problems at all with the scanner, the automatic document feeder or manual feeder. The included software is rudimentary but is simple and works fine.

One aesthetic issue: The Amazon product image makes it look like the paper tray is a draw. It is not. It''s a fixed tray that protrudes a few inches in front of the printer when the tray contains paper. The protruding portion is covered by an opaque plastic cover. When the paper tray is empty, the front part is hinged so it can be lifted to be flush with the printer (as in the image). This is both a positive and negative. When open, it takes up a little more desk space. But the paper is always in view so you easily tell if you are running low. Personally I never lift up the tray.

Although I did not buy it from amazon, I feel this is the best place to review it. I bought this printer cheaper than it probably should have been. There was an easyrebate involved. So I was thrilled about that.

When I got the box opened it took about 5 minutes to set it up. I installed the drivers and everything was up and running in no time. It was a real breeze. I have it set up via USB connection, so I cannot comment about its network capabilities. I did run a series of tests on its scanning however.

There are a couple of different parameters to set for the scanner. There are the resolution and color settings. For resolution, obviously the higher the resolution, the finer the image. If you are scanning text however, it doesnt require very high resolution. I found all the text on my utility bills legible at 200dpi, just one setting above the lowest resolution. A 2 page document takes up roughly 200kb in grayscale mode when saved as a PDF. IT TOOK ABOUT 5 SECONDS TO SCAN A PAGE THROUGH THE DOCUMENT FEEDER.

2 things surprised me when I scanned this document in the other color modes (true color, 24-bit color, black and white):

1.) The file size remained about the same across all color modes.

2.) The scanning time became much longer for the other color modes.

There is an OCR program included with the software and it requires a resolution of 300dpi, which doesnt make a huge difference in file size or scanning time. But when the OCR program is finished and the document is saved in word format there is a HUGE difference. My 17 page lease took up a mere 285kB when converted to word format. You should only run the OCR programs on pages that are just text though. Running OCR on documents that contain alot of pictures or on poor copies can be problematic. For that just save the scan as a PDF and you''ll be fine.

In the first 3 hours of owning this beauty, I had scanned every important piece of paper in my apartment. I even scanned all of my notes for a current semester at an Ivy League university.

I love this machine, and so will you.

After installing the new toner cartridge, the duplexing feature caused the printer to jam about 90% of the time. The old cartridge continued to function well. In comparing the two cartridges, I noticed that a small hole on the "bottom" of the new cartridge was a little smaller in diameter perhaps 1/64". There is a small white pin in the printer which apparently must go into that hole when it is duplexing. I oiled the hole with a Q-tip containing vegetable oil and the printer is now failing only about 5% of the time. When these toner cartridges are so expensive, it is disappointing that one must trouble-shoot the problem or return the cartridge.

This is the first cartridge I have had to buy for my Samsung ML-2851ND printer. i inserted it, and it went to printing right away. The printer firmware properly identified the cartridge, and my prints are clear again. What more can you say about a replacement toner cartridge?

I think what is of more interest to owners of the printers that use this cartridge is whether or not the useful life is going to be as advertised. I replaced the starter cartridge provided with my printer with this new one. I had to choose the extended life cartridge because of a current class I am taking. The class uses an electronic book instead of a traditional, printed and bound book. I don''t like trying to read books on a computer screen, so have been printing out the chapters of the e-book needed for homework. This takes an enormous amount of paper (even with the duplexer) and toner. Having provided some background about my printing needs, I can say that the cartridge that was replaced lasted just a few pages more than the advertised 2000 pages of the starter/standard cartridge. Since I have left most of my print quality settings at default, I''m hoping this cartridge will yield 5000+ pages per its specification claim. Time will tell and I can update this review then.

April 4, 2011 I have to update this review because I recently had to replace this cartridge with a new one. I went ahead and bought another cartridge of this type, but I am very disappointed with its longevity. My printing habits have not changed since I ordered this first cartridge. However, this cartridge started running out after 4000 pages. That''s 20% less than the rated output for this cartridge. At 4500 pages, this cartridge was completely spent. When the cost of the 2000 page cartridge (basically the same as the starter cartridge) is considered, the cost per page when this cartridge is used is actually higher. I had to lower my rating for this product because of that. If the replacement cartridge of the same type yields a higher output, I''ll update this rating again.

October 25, 2011 I just replaced the second, extended life cartridge after almost 5200 prints. Nothing has changed in my printing habits except that I leave the printer powered on all the time. I have learned from another printer manufacturer that power cycling some laser printers count against the toner counter in the printer firmware. I can''t imagine that would account for almost 700 pages, but I won''t rule out that helping with the life of this last toner. The only other implication is either a lack of uniformity in the production of these toners, or I managed to get the one toner that was under the toner funnel when the toner supply ran short. I''ll leave my rating as-is for now. If the toner life gets more consistent, I will improve it.

I used a generic toner in my Samsung ML-2851ND monochrome laser printer. After about 1000 sheets I began to get streaks and black blotches on my documents. No matter how I cleaned the toner cartridge or the printer, after printing about 20 pages OK, it would start with the streaking again. I was concerned that something was wrong with my printer. On a hunch, I purchased this orginal Samsung toner cartridge, and the problem immediately disappeared.

I hate paying the premium price for an original cartridge, but after getting only 1000 good copies out of the generic cartridge I realized I was ahead on cost by going this route. Working well so far. Have printed at least 1000 pages with this cartridge and no degredation in print quality.

Easy to install. Worked instantly. Only complaint was that it was putting a continuous smudge on the right side of the paper. I took it out, cleaned off the roller and shook it gently to spread the toner out. That seemed to do the job.

I have dozens of plastic storage totes in my basement filled with all kinds of different things, and in a rare burst of organizational frenzy I decided to try these labels. At first glance, they looked great nice bright colors, easy to peel, and a generous area to write whatever I wanted on them.

First, I''d like to start by noting that these are labels, not post-it notes; thus, the entire back is adhesive as opposed to a small strip at the top.

I was initially surprised because I expected the paper to be thinner, but thicker is good. For the writing test, I used five different writing instruments: Zebra Techno Line 0.4mm ballpoint pen, Ultra Fine Point Sharpie marker, Fine Point Sharpie Marker, Stabilo Sensor 0.3mm art marker, and Pentel Supplio 0.5mm mechanical pencil.

The smoothness of the paper made writing with the Ultra Fine Point Sharpie, art marker, and the pencil seem haphazard--as if there was no tooth or grip to help control the line. However, I found writing with the ballpoint pen and the fine point marker to be more comfortable (with the sharpie being the clear winner). I erased the pencil and found that it did not erase cleanly and required some effort. With the two extra fine point markers, there was absolutely no bleed through, and even with the fine point Sharpie, the bleed through was minimal; it didn''t leave any traces of marker on the sheet underneath.

I had a few old school post-it notes handy, so I compared the adhesive on both. While the new "Super Sticky" adhesive is stickier than the old school post-it notes, it''s nothing to dispatch a parade over. Where this product shines is in its durability.

At the time of this review, my test label has been removed and re-stuck over eleven times, staying on some surfaces for hours at a time, and is still going. Its first home was on a regular sheet of laser printer paper. Upon removing it, I was worried it would cause damage (or tear the paper), but it came off like a dream. I then stuck it to a sheet with printed text to see if it would lift the ink and was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn''t. Next, I used it on a vinyl binder and removed it with no trouble at all. The other surfaces I''ve used the label on include various iterations of plastic (including storage boxes), glass, and wood. And the labels didn''t fall off once*.

However, after the eleventh removal, it''s reaching the end of its life and the corners are starting to curl up. At this point, it wouldn''t stay sturdy on plastic, glass, or wood, but it still has some life where plain paper is concerned. In fact, I''d feel secure tearing off the perforated edge and using it as a mailing label.

My final verdict? While I''m not impressed with its too smooth surface and Super Sticky title, I am thoroughly impressed with the product''s (improved) lifespan and durability.

* UPDATE 02.22.12: My final verdict still stands, but I wanted to update my review with additional findings. Though they didn''t fall off, some of the labels I''ve used on plastic bins began to curl at the edges after a few days--these were usually the bins I didn''t keep in a climate controlled area. So I''m thinking these labels aren''t designed for long-term (i.e. longer than a week) use on plastic bins stored in certain areas.

For now, I use a permanent marker on the bins directly and when I''m ready to change the labeling I use a cotton swap dipped in rubbing alcohol (91%, but I''m sure 70% would work, too). For the majority of plastic bins, this works, but it should go without saying you should test this method on your own storage containers before attempting it--just make a small mark on a non-visible area, wait 24 hours, then take a cotton swap to it and see if the mark wipes away.

These stickies are not your grandfather''s stickies. The stickies, which measure 2 X 3 1/2 inches, are sticky over almost the entire backing. Gone are the days when you have to post your sticky but add some Scotch tape to ensure that the sticky will stay in position. The kit comes with four pads. Two of them are chartreuse colored. The other two are flaming pink. These bright colors scream out and ensure that all potential readers take notice.

An interesting feature of these stickies is that one border is devoid of stickiness. This makes it easy for the user to grasp each paper, and remove it from the pad. Moreover, the narrow border region is perforated, for those users who have a need for the entire backing of the sticky to be in direct-contact with the target surface. On the other hand, the user has the option of leaving the perforated border intact, and in this case, the adhering sticky will have a narrow region that flops about because it has no sticky backing.

The container (bag) has a re-sealable zipper. It is the same kind of re-sealable zipper that you find on grated cheese products from the grocery store. The advantate of this bag is that you will never lose your pads of stickies. They are all safely in the bag. It is my guess that the bag will also maintain shelf-life of your sticky pads.

Summary: Great idea but I''d recommend the Post-It Super Sticky Color Coding labels instead if the size works for you.

I managed to score samples of several 3M Post-It Super Sticky products. This product, the Post-it(R) Super Sticky Removable File Folder Labels, 0.6 x 3.4 Inches White, Laser/Inkjet, 750 labels per pack (2100-H), and Post-it(R) Super Sticky Removable Color Coding Labels, 1 x 2.6 Inches Assorted Neon, Laser, 450 labels per pack (2700-P)

The three products are very similar. It appears the adhesive is identical with the only difference being the paper thickness, color, and delivery (sheet vs pad).

The file labels comes on a thinner white paper. The size is quite narrow, though more than enough to label boxes or shelves.

The paper on the "Color Coding labels" and "Label Pads" are similar except that these only come in two colors while the "Color Coding Labels" come in four. The four color coding labels are narrower but about the same length as these label pads (1"x2.6" rather than 1.8"x2.8") but on a per label basis, these cost more than TWICE as much.

Finally these are on a pad, while the "Color Coding Labels" come on a sheet (like address labels) which means that, if you want to, you can run the color coding labels through a printer and get REALLY organized!

A pad is more convenient to store than a sheet of labels, but if you are doing a bunch of boxes, it''s nice to be able to write out more than one label at a time. With this product, you can''t write the next label out until you''ve peeled this one off.

Next, there''s a strange thing they did to make it in pad form to make it easier to peel off, there is a little tab at the bottom with adhesive and a dashed line to indicate where to tear it off. If you wrote in that area, whoops, it''s either leave it on (with the dashed line and no adhesive behind) or lose what you wrote.

The last disadvantage is that these have sharp corners while the "Color Coding labels" have rounded corners which makes them stay on better.

Overall, if you can live with the narrower "Post-It Super Sticky Color Coding" labels, I''d go that way.

But the glue on these pads is so weak the paper curls up and literally entirely falls off within 10 minutes of placement. I had the same problem with this Post-It product:

Basically, the glue on these pads and labels is the super-weak kind they use on Post-It notes, except instead of covering only about 15% of the back of the surface they cover about 85% of it. These are Bizarro-Post-It-Notes.

(In case you''re wondering, the containers were brand new and perfectly clean, and I live in Colorado, where it''s very dry.)

WHY I BOUGHT IT: I''ve had this printer for only two days but here are my initial reactions: I can''t compare this machine with other 3-in-1''s. I come from having three separate units to handle print, fax, and scan, so the 3-in-1 (four with copy) is a pleasure both for functionality and space saving. I''ve been a pretty loyal HP user, but I switched to this Brother this time because of the comparatively high reader scores on Amazon, because Consumer Reports gave it good grades, because ink costs are relatively low compared to many others especially inkjets, because I don''t expect to give it heavy use and the laser toner will not dry up over time. For color and photos I still retain my old excellent HP photo printer, or I can head to the Copymat store, so I didn''t see the need for color on this one.

SETUP: Setup on the home network was fairly easy. Wired hookup to the main computer was basically plug and play, but getting the networked computer to recognize the new printer took some detective work. Ultimately I had to search through the on-disk documentation (as opposed to the printed User''s Guide) to figure it out. I knew I had to set the printer driver on the "share" position in Windows, but I learned that I also had to change the network setting on the printer itself, via the printer''s menu. Had this been explicit in either the Start Here or User''s Guide (maybe it''s there, but I didn''t see it), I would have been saved some frustration.

USING IT: The fax worked right away even though I do not have a dedicated fax line and my only line is hooked to an answering machine a common situation I imagine. The explicit directions on how to deal with the answering machine question made it a no-brainer. The fax machine now recognizes a fax tone coming in, but otherwise lets the answering machine take the call.

Use is intuitive and straightforward in all functions. The Control Center is basic enough to dig right in for quick use without having to slog through the User''s Guide for most operations. The smart scanning software has basic use at the front but has advanced controls should you need them. The Control Center software is much more user-friendly than the scanning software I was using for my Epson scanner. As indicated in other reviews, the LCD screen is absurdly small and not nearly bright enough to see easily, even at the highest contrast setting, but once setup is completed, I suspect there is infrequent need to refer to it.

I wouldn''t recommend the machine if you need batch printing of envelopes. The manual paper feeder accepts only one envelope or sheet of labels at a time, and to avoid crinkled copies one must open up the back an inconvenient step depending on the position of the printer. Feeding one envelope without opening up the back sends the envelope through the main print loop and produces an envelope with some creases but suitable for casual, not business, use. For this reason alone, I gave the rating 4 stars as opposed to 5, since occasionally it would be convenient to print more than one envelope or label page at a time.

The fan noise others have complained about does not bother me. I hear it, but it is not loud or annoying to me, and only lasts for several minutes before it goes into a "deep sleep" (no snoring observed yet).

SUMMARY: Overall, this is a very nice machine. It does what it says, quickly, quietly, efficiently. It prints crisp, clean text as one expects of laser printers, and cranks out about 20 ppm. Scanning docs including color photos are amazingly clear and true. I recommend this unit. If I have further comments after I give it more use, I''ll update.

UPDATE (12/19/11): Now that I''ve used the machine for a little over a month, I can say I find it a pleasure to use for all functions. While I can''t figure out a way to print more than one envelope or label sheet at a time and they must be fed manually, the trick to printing wrinkle-free is to read the manual (duh), which instructs you not only to open the back but to adjust two green levers down. Once that adjustment is made, envelopes slide through with nary a wrinkle. I know, reading the manual isn''t much fun, but once in awhile you learn something. With that caveat, I''m bumping my review to a full five star.

Small footprint, well integrated Ethernet access, large paper storage space, inexpensive (compared to HP) toner, and a document feeder, all at a very low price. In my past experience with Brother printers and fax machines they are extremely reliable and easy to setup and that is why I chose to go with a Brother. With a infrequently used copier the inkjet versions will clog and as the ink dries out in the print heads and they are a lot slower and in the long run a lot more expensive with the cost of consumables.

Setup was fast and easy and the Nuance scanner software is great and an improvement over that provided with older models from Brother and the software from HP which is so bloated that it often fails to even install properly.

Nice feature is the ability to register a PC by name when installing the software. Then when scanning a document you can select the destination computer from the Brother and push the scan to the desired PC. Very easy and very slick implementation and it works!

Nuance software also provides for scanning to the customary TIFF or JPEG formats but by default will scan and output a PDF file which is a real timesaver for scanning a document to email to someone. I would pay for the free Nuance software for this feature alone.

Printing to the Brother MFC7360N wakes it out of sleep mode (actuall "deep sleep") and outputs a page in seconds. It is roughly four times as fast as my HP 4000TN printer to output the first page. The Brother does suck up a lot of power when it comes out of sleep mode and the alarm goes off on the UPS that is on the same circuit. I suspect it probably should be on its own circuit or a 20amp circuit to avoid any problems with other devices.

Scanning is very fast and with standard large images works as expected. With text pages though the borders have a shadow pattern on the page on both sides that is generated within the machine. For OCR or most images this is not going to be a problem but not great for making scans of text pages for electronic archival purposes. This problem only affects scans and does not happen when making a copy of the same printed page so it may be a problem with the Nuance software.

It also is extremely noisy with a loud hum and loud fan noise when it is first turned on or after a page is printed. It goes into standard and then sleep and then deep sleep mode and the fan does not shut off until it reaches "deep sleep". The MFC really needs to be in a separate room with a door you can close. Turning the unit on and not even printing or scanning it goes into standard mode and I timed how long it took for the fan to shut off. It takes a full 11 minutes before the machine goes into deep sleep mode and its very loud fan shuts off. Has to be a defect in the design as the cooling fan cycles even when the MFC7360N is first turned on and nothing has been printed. This could be fixed with a firmware upgrade but apparently Brother has not bothered to produce one.

I paid $179.97 for this printer on August 24, 2011 and a week later it is priced at $114.99 which, if you can put it in a separate room, makes this a good value with the low cost of the Brother consumables.

The noise is loud and atypical of laser printers. Most recently I bought a Canon 4570dn all in one and after it prints a page it shuts down immediately and it is completely silent. The 11 minutes of fan noise from the majority of Brother laserjet printers is a fairly recent defect as I have had other laserjet printers from Brother that did not exhibit this behavior and were extremely reliable.

The field of monochrome all-in-one AIO laser printers lags behind the more ubiquitous inkjet AIO units. I needed an economical solution for scanning and printing documents. It didnt'' make sen$e to keep buying expensive ink replacements from the inkjet printer. I settled on the Brother MFC-7360N. The unit is somewhat noisy when using ADF (auto doc feeder) and acceptable when printing. Construction is plasticy but so are most printers these days.

Some other drawbacks:

Cannot change the default directory where images are stored on your computer

Takes about 30-min to install the drivers & sw on one computer. sooooo slowwwww

The little display window is hard to read even at its highest contrast setting! Wow, bizarre.

M-F (no weekend) customer support

The printer is acceptable and not too expensive. The software for Mac is quite full-featured but not robust. UI is a weak point. I learned to workaround its quirkiness. The printer is great if you just want an efficient machine at a modest price. Once you get used to the software, it will allow to be quite productive. Scan multi-page docs to create single-file PDF (had problems scanning 6 pages, insufficient RAM??) but no problem combining scanned pages later to gen PDF.

This machine scans at 15 pages/minute. Precisely what I needed for work. I originally wanted to buy a dedicated scanner, but the Brother can scan/fax/print/copy for $129 w/Amazon Prime. I downloaded "Fast Scan to PDF" software so that I can scan up up to 35 pages (max pages on feeder) into 1 PDF file. The included Brother software cannot combine multiple pages into 1 PDF.

Fast set-up. After plugging the USB cable, my Windows 7 desktop automatically detected and loaded all 5 drivers. Up and running within 4-5 minutes. No need to install the drivers on the discs.

The toner that came with the printer has a stated limit of 700 pages. I bought the aftermarket toner for $22 on Amazon that has a stated limit of 2700 pages.

The printer is noisy when active. Power consumption: 1080 W at Peak. 1.5 W Deep Sleep. Ready (Average) 55 W.

The printer is ready to print in 8.5 seconds in deep sleep mode. That is very fast. Plus it prints 24 pages/minute

The printer quality is flimsy because its made from cheap plastic panels. I''m sure over time something will break. What do expect for $129?

Only had this printer for about three weeks but I like it so far. Warm up is quick, about 15 seconds from cold start to the first printed copy. Have it installed as a network printer so I can print wirelessly from my notebook through my router. I like the fact that Brother has one of the less expensive toner cartridges on the market. I would recommed this multi-function printer to anyone in a home enviroment (where I use it) to a small office. We have several Brother printers similar to this one at work and use them mostly for fax and some light copying.

Many reviews point for 40 prints and less..yes I confess that I was printing 40 or less if I use premium plus papers but not any more.

I bought 16 cartridge since I bought my HP A618 but the last cartridge printed 140 and still I can print photos (I got the warning of low ink in 100)

what I did is changed the setting in the HP Photosmart Essential 3.0 the software to use it to print your photos. these are the changes:

1After you click at the Simple Print, make sure you choose the correct size not bigger or Full Page. (for me usually 15x10)

2choose Printer Settings at the top right then confirm your paper size (if you use paper with tab, select it)

3click at the Advanced printer Settings. then select your paper type (advanced or premium photo papers). select print quality, Best. I use the (best) printer quality because I didn''t notice any difference while using Maximum dpi and I think Maximum dpi only good when you print 5x7 but trust me, don''t ever use it. stick to (best). it consumes less ink than maximum and the output is amazing.

4Click at the (Features Tab) at the top left. then at the bottom there is a very bad technology which is (photo fix), always put it OFF. this feature makes your ink finish earlier. Don''t use it ever.

before I use the new settings, I decided to buy Canon PIXMA mini320 but it was out of stock so I bought 2 cartridges to print 70 photos. but the first cartridge still usable.

soon I''ll use the second cartridge and I''ll try to update my review.

for now, use the settings above and I hope you get more printed photos of a single cartridge.

Update 13-6-2008:

now I have used another 2 inks of this..one has printed 48 photos and the second printed 81 photos and still in use.

I got a tip from hp life chat support. they told me to buy the longest expiry date ink which means the ink expire date will last 1 year or 2. I bought an ink that will expire at aug-2009 which I''m still using it until now and another june-2008 which only printed 48.

Paper for 110 ink:

don''t ever use premium or premium plus HP papers. they will not dry as long as you live or even water-proof papers. they will consume more ink too. you have 2 other options. Canon paper plus glossy or high-glossy and HP advanced glossy. both are incredible. I got stunning photos when I used them and longer life ink.

Photo quality settings:

if you edit your photos in the PC, don''t forget to set the resolution of the photo at 600dpi or 300dpi. to know more about the resolution search the net for (PPI & DPI). once you understand them you will know that you didn''t ever get a perfect photo. now when I compare the best photo before this method and after, I realized that I was a stupid who wasted money on papers like premium and lost quality of 400 photos I printed by not setting the resolution of the photo which is the same as the printer.

If you still interested in buying this ink, follow these steps above specially the expiry date of the ink and using HP advanced or canon plus paper. and before you buy new printer like Canon, try doing my way and buy oe last ink before spending money on new printer.

one last thing. don''t print photos from sd card. use a software like adobe lightroom to set the exposure, light, the black level, remove noisea and colors.

I love the convenience of my photo printer. The HP110 ink cartridge produces beautiful prints that look like professional quality. However, the cartridge really doesn''t last very long. I print in 5x7 and usually run out of ink before I print 20 photographs. At this rate I figure each print costs $1.10 (with photo paper included.) With my film camera I can have an entire roll of 24 5x7 prints developed at BJs Wholesale club for less than $5. Using the printer and cartidge at home may be convenient, but it''s not very cost effective. I would have given the product 5*s if I was able to print more photos/cartridge.

This is a nice product and it does create excellent quality prints but unless you print on the lowest quality you don''t get many prints out of this cartridge. I have an HP A616 Photo Printer and get about 24 4x6 pictures per cartridge on the highest print quality setting, when you factor in the cost of paper that is over a dollar a print which is much too high to pay for normal printing. Home photo printers are good if you need to print a picture on the fly but not for average photo printing needs.

First of all to the reviewer who noted that you''re paying roughly $20 for 5 mL of ink this is NOT the ink you use in your everday school report, resume, and web printing. This is PHOTO INK and as such is a speciality item with a higher price tag.

Secondly, this ink provides amazing quality and clarity in my HP Photosmart A612 which is a cousin to the HP Photosmart A 610 (I believe the A612 was only sold through QVC but I could be mistaken). Anyhoooo, the picture quality is fantastic on par if not better than what the prints I receive from the one hour printing service at the drugstore or Target.

Since I set up my printer yesterday I''ve printing like a fiend and so far have only used a tiny bit of ink.
