This is the second Canon PIXMA printer that I''ve owned. I gave my other PIXMA to my mama-in-law and she''s been happy with it.

Right out of the box, this printer was easy to setup. Remove the packaging, follow a few steps and Windows 7 was up and running. There was some bloat-ware that came on the CD and I opted not to install some of the additional photo editing utilities. Just something to be aware of. You need to install most of the packages if you want to scan images.

The nice part about this printer is that the paper loads horizontally on the bottom of the printer. This eliminates that curl that you get in paper in some printers where the paper tray is in the rear of the printer and vertical.

Another huge feature on a small printer like this is that it duplexes. I really hate going through extra paper and it''s very easy to find the duplex option. It''s been working like a charm.

That being said, I wish I could give you more details in this review regarding the card reading, and the scanning. I haven''t used the scan very much. Wireless setup was a piece of cake with Windows. No issues there. I have used the copy feature a few times and that worked quite well.

I can''t speak too much regarding the ink usage. All ink jet printers seem to just suck ink dry if you print constantly. At least this is split into a single black cartridge and another one for color. It''s still easy to go through a ton of ink without doing much.

All in all, this printer does a lot of things quite well. I definitely recommend it.

I found this printer easy to set up on my wireless network, and it prints like a charm from my iPad and iPhone. I also enjoy being able to scan images and send them to my iMac wirelessly. The duplex printing feature saves on paper, and I found the drivers for Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) on Canon''s website. I don''t have a landline, so I haven''t tried the fax feature.

So why not five stars? First, the scanner does not have a document feeder. To merit five stars, not only should the scanner have an automatic document feeder, but the document feeder should support duplexing. After all, the printer does.

Second, the printer uses one cartridge for all of the color inks. This means that when you run out of one color, you have to buy the ink for all the colors. Granted, this generates more ink sales for Canon, but at the expense of your pocketbook, and it''s such a waste.

This printer replaces a somewhat old HP that had been a good performer for home use. I like Canon products and have had good luck with them so when this printer came out with a high rating I bought it. Print quality is good and the options available are very good. To have an all in one photo/copier/printer is great for home use. Ink cartridges are more reasonably priced than HP and have options for tank size/capacity which can save money. The printer is very noisy however and takes a long time to warm up. During print jobs it will stop and tell me to wait momentarily while it does some undexplained function. Lots of clattering and movement in the printer. Good printer but annoying with the slowness and noise.

I am a big fan of Canon printers. My past 4 printers have all been Canon. The print quality is always fantastic and this is no different. I highly suggest using Canon branded photo paper for the best photo printing results.

As for set up, it is very easy. Wireless is a little bit trickier than USB, but still easy to go and get up and running. I use a Mac and don''t install the included software. I find printing installs by itself and I use Image Capture for scanningwhich also works great. If you Mac does not see the printer or scanner you might have to turn to the CD for drivers.

I have two complaints about this printer.

1. The ink color ink is the older style of an all in one cartridge. Instead of individual ink tanks for color printing you have one cartridge. I find this wastes a lot of ink. However, my grandmother hates single ink cartridges and prefers her color printers to have one color cartridge.

2. iOS printing needs and Airprint update. True you can print photos using the Canon app on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad, but that is very limiting. I don''t understand why Canon (who has other Airprint printers) can''t release a firmware update to make this a true airprint printer so you do not have to print through an app or other means.

I am not a fan of on board photo editing and haven''t really played with those features much. However, if you want a great all-in-one printer that is wireless this is an inexpensive option.

I have used this machine for more than one month, and came to an important conclusion that this machine itself is a pretty decent one, but in the long run this printer will cost you lots of money for alternating the inks, which are relatively more costly than other brand inks. This machine uses inks incredibly a lot, and this means that you have to alternate this expensive ink cartridge quite often, and you need to spend a lot of money for maintaining this machine. This must be a big loss in the long run. I am writing this critical review, because this machine is too overrated now in Amazon, warning students or heavy users of printing not to take this one. You may think that this machine is a good deal in terms of price right now, but once you take a long-term perspective, this printer must cost you a lot. So this machine is not so attractive as you may expect or the ad seduces you. Please keep this in your mind, if you are considering buying it: This must be rather an expensive choice.

I went shoping for a new printer a few months ago, originally shopping for a color injet (NOT All-In-One) for my start-up business. I wanted to be able to be able to give my cliets color prints of simple things like invoices, diagrams, or product photos.

When I got to the store, I came accross the MFC-5840CN by Brother and was amazed by the number of features for under $200. I had a Lexmark X85 I was replacing and that thing was a pile of junk, and made me cautious of All-In-Ones. After a few days of online research I decided to buy the Brother (my first Brother product) printer and let me say this think is awesome!

For a printer it does a good job, with good B&W as well as color prints. Now I have not tried photo paper, but it prints better then I expected and seems good (I''m not a photographerI just want some color in my documents!). I REALLY like the fact that it has built-in 10/100Tx networking as well because I do have a few computers as well as a wireless laptop I use it from (BOTH PC and Mac).

As a Fax machine the MFC once again does a good job. I was suprised that the machine supports the "Distinctive Ring" feature and has not failed once to pick up my distinctive ring number I use as a fax line. It also has not once picked up my regular voice ringer. I can tell the fax machine as well as copier which paper tray to use as well, which is cool. I very much like the auto-feeder it makes everything that is more then one page that much easier to copy and fax.

I have used the fax-from-pc and that works great too. From wired and wireless computers around my house I can send faxes, print, and access the memory card slots!

In conclusion I must say that this is a excelent printer, especially considering the price. I have also bought two for some clients who like it very much with no problems so far. I hope this helps you!

I have had this machine for other a month now & I really love it. It was easy to install over my LAN. It has so many features and for a terrific price (what it is priced now, is even less than what I paid).

I did a lot of research before I bought this device. I have owned Brother devices before and many others. I love the low cost of printer cartidges for this device, especially since I print a lot of digital photos. The print quality is excellent! Having two paper trays is very nice, I enjoy keeping my photo paper in one and regular paper in the other. You can also check the print volumes on the MFC directly, which is very convenient.

I also use the scanning feature a lot. There are many options to choose from when scanning. Having an ADF which can scan both letter and legal is very helpful. The PaperPort program that it comes with is great too for organizing and viewing your scanned documents.

I have also found that you can scan thru the ADF and print at the same time. I found it really amazing how much having memory in the printer helps my pc performance. Even when I have it printing and scanning I can still run programs at the same time on my pc with little performance loss. When I used to print with my Epson, I couldn''t do anything else until it had near completed the print job.

I have yet to use the card reader, because I have another and I also haven''t hooked up the fax yet. Those parts are nice to have in case I need them.

I bought this printer back in February 2005 and it has been the biggest ink hog ever. I buy a lot of printers for my business, but I really needed an all in one that had a good automatic scanner and would print photos from my memory card. Out of the box, it is a super thrill it works great, it looks good, it prints great pictures and it scans fast and trouble free. The biggest down side to this printer is the way it senses the ink levels in the cartridges. It allegedly is an ink dot counter but that''s not true it really has a light sensor and when your ink cartridge is about half full, you get an out of ink message and the machine will not do a thing. Even if all you want to do is scan, you can''t even get the machine to turn off. It''s incredible that an "empty" ink cartridge would lock up the machine, but that''s how Brother wanted it apparently. The only way to get it to work again is to put in a new ink cartridge. Since Brother''s ink cartridges are not "full" when you buy them, you really get very little printing from the cartridge. Seems like no one at Brother will tell you how to fix this problem, they talk to you like "whats the problem?" In the meantime, I''m replacing those little ink cartridges every month and every time the "empty" cartridge is half full. A couple of times the cartridges looked nearly full. If you print on a regular basis you are going to spend a fortune on ink. Even with the remanufactured cartridges.

I finally figured out how to get around the light sensor. But I am moving this machine to occassional use only and scanning and I''m getting my secretary a laser MFC machine. You can bet it won''t be another Brother though.

The scanner works great, the printing works great too, good photo printing even on plain paper! Card reader works, I use it with my Lexar/Olympus 512mb, Kodak 32mb, and Fujifilm 16mb xD-picture card that came with my E510 Digital Camera. This is my second All-in-one printer. The first one (MFC-7300C) I bought it around Christmas of 01''. It was slow, and I would get paper jams, and ink errors all the time.. But this AIO has a flatbed scanner, dual paper trays, media card reader etc. At first I had a hard time putting in the ink, finally (small framed me) got my mom to do it, because she is bigger and stronger than me. I haven''t tried out the networking function yet. But like the MFC-7300C the new MFC-5840CN has some problems too, besides ink installing problems, coping is kinda on the slow side, no cables come with the printer like the USB or Ethernet cable, Sometime the scanner functions stops working and I''ll have to un-plug and re-plug the printer to get the printer working right again, this has happen 3 times already, I still can''t get why this happens? Don''t know if this is only happening to me or not? And as a matter of fact, when you run out of ink in one ink cartridge, like the black for instants, the printer won''t work until you''ll replaces the one emtpy cartridge. kinda dumb huh? I didn''t have this problem with my old Xerox printer. I still recommend this cheap AIO printer, because it everything you want in a AIO, and more! There is a even a cheaper model(MFC-5440CN), this model doesn''t have the media card reader, nor, does it have the etxra paper tray, but it has everything else the 5840CN have...

Pros:

Networking, media card reader, dual paper trays, fast printing and scanning, good photo prints even on plain paper.

Cons:

Slow coping, no color LCD, problems with installing ink, No USB or Ethernet cable included, for some reason the scanner function stops working, have un-plug and re-plug in the printer to get it working again, when one ink cartridge runs out, you aren''t able to print anything until you replaces the empty cartridge..

The Brother DCP-9045CDN (the listed model number was incorrectly stated as DCP-9045CDW at the time of this writing) is a very well designed color laser printer/scanner/copier with impressive built-in networking and duplex capabilities.

First, it performs very nicely as a network color laser printer. It uses four toner cartridges (black, yellow, cyan, & magenta) that are easily accessed via a simple sliding drawer at the front of the unit. The toner cartridges are available in standard-capacity and high-capacity. While it is a little disappointing that the machine ships with the standard-capacity cartridges, this seems to be the ''norm'' in the printer industry. However, I recommend purchasing the high-capacity cartridges when it is time to replenish your supplies, since they are a better value.

The machine comes with a 250-sheet standard paper tray as well as a 50-sheet "Multi-purpose" paper tray that folds down from the front of the unit. Many printers that we have used in the past also had one of these "multi-purpose"-type trays, but they usually amounted to nothing more than a single sheet manual feeder or an envelope feeder; we like the fact that this one holds 50 sheets and can actually be used as a second paper tray. We also purchased the optional 500-sheet paper tray so that we can have plain paper, letterhead, and labels loaded at the same time. The unit can use legal size paper in addition to letter size.

We really love the built-in duplex feature, and it is one of the main reasons that we purchased this model, as it saves us a ton on paper costs. We found that the prices of machines with built-in duplex capabilities (especially color models) were typically substantially higher than machines without duplex, and, initially, we didn''t think we could afford a color laser with duplex. However, the 9045CDN was surprisingly within our budget.

As for network printing, this machine has very robust network support. It supports TCP/IP v4 as well as TCP/IP v6, which means its network capabilities should be about as future-proof as possible. The 9045CDN supports peer-to-peer type networks as well as server-based networks, and the included software and setup guide make it very easy to setup the unit to work with either type of network. The machine includes drivers for Windows 2000, Windows XP (32-bit & 64-bit), Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 (32-bit & 64-bit), and Mac OS X 10.2.4 (or greater.)

Second, this machine not only scans, but it is actually a network scanner. We looked at several other network printers that had scanning capabilities, but most of them could only scan to a single computer through a USB cable their network capabilities were limited to printing only. However, the 9045CDN can scan directly to any computer that is attached to our network! In addition, it can scan directly to an FTP server on the network or on the Internet. The automatic document feeder is very handy and this machine will even perform duplex scanning and copying! The scanner glass is large enough for legal size paper; however, the automatic feeder only supports up to letter size paper, so legal size documents must be scanned or copied one at a time.

Beyond network printing and scanning, the 9045CDN, of course, has the obligatory USB port on the rear so that you can attach the machine directly to a single computer rather than to a network. There are also several nice features that allow you to use the machine without even having to boot up any computers. For instance, you can print directly from or scan directly to a USB memory key (i.e. flash drive, etc.); just plug your flash drive into the USB port on the front of the machine, and print your documents and pictures that are stored on the flash drive. You can also attach a PictBridge compatible camera to the machine and print your photos without a computer. The machine also works great as a standalone color copier.

We were able to replace two non-network monochrome laser printers, a color inkjet multifunction printer/scanner, and a copier with one 9045CDN. For most of our printing/copying we use the 9045CDN in black and white mode, but when we need color it is there, and it is substantially less expensive per page to print in color than the color inkjet printer that this unit replaced. We are very pleased with this unit.

I have only discovered one shortcoming so far. Despite the owner''s manual''s claim to the contrary, envelopes don''t print well. They come out with several small crimps on the edges. I ended up keeping the old inkjet printer in our office to use as an envelope printer. Apart from that, it''s a great addition to our small office.

Excellent printer, finally I have just one affordable printer for all my scanning & printing needs (color duplex scan, copy and print).

I''ll highlight the few less than perfect features. Don''t get me wrong for the $ this is a great printer and I''m happy to be using it, but you are here for the nitty gritty dirt so I''ll dish it.

It is a bit slow on copy/scan and print operations, the paper tray only holds around 1/3 of a ream of paper, I can''t stuff 250 in there without paper jams. For a network mid-volume printer holding anything less than a ream is a joke. When printing more than 50 sheets at a time it''s common for a few pages to jump out of the receiving bin and need to be placed back in the printed document, I''d expect a printer of this type to hold at least 250 printed sheets without spewing them on the floor.

It''s sooooo close to perfect, just misses that mark on those few items.

This printer has been nothing but a problem from Day 1 and customer service has been horrible. They''re trying to tell us it''s the toner cartridges despite the fact that it has not printed right from Day 1 and we have replaced all cartridges multiple times (with original Brother cartridges). Basically the color printing has been useless. B&W has been fine until last few days it has started randomly printing black streaks on right margin occasionally.

Also the toner cartridges don''t last nearly as long as they claim and the machine makes you replace them even when it is clearly still printing properly toner-wise (B&W text was still crisp and clear, yet machine demanded new toner cartridge).

I''ve used the machine for one month only for copying; it''s quiet but slow to warm up for first copy. Not sensitive to light blue for color copying. Need high contrast to copy light markings such as pencil.

Got this printer due to my 2 other very positive Brother Laser printers, HL5240 & MFC7840W, both excellent, fast and very reliable, the second reason is my old favorite, Konica Minolta 2300DL (Color Laser) is dying and hoping to combine the function with my still working Brother HL5240 to save space.

Involved with design and illustrations, I print 80% of my work & documents in full color or combination text & color images, in short, I''m very color sensitive.

Brother HL 4040CN is very easy to network even with Multi Window OS desktops, my home office got 2 Vista, 2 XP pro & a XP Media Center PC. Very fast and good text printing quality, actually the color is not even that bad, if I''m not that sensitive.

Pros:

Easy to install and network.

Flip up LCD minimized glare and makes it easy to read the text and ink monitoring.

Fast wake up from sleep or energy saver mode, I really like the light blinking when the machine it in progress or warming up.

Easy front access both for toner replacement, paper tray & bypass paper slot, kind of idiot proof.

Noise level when printing and warm up is comparable to my other laser printers, probably less.

Heavy and looks like it''s very well built.

USB interface on the front is a plus.

Cons:

Color prints are warmer and slightly purple & green compared to the output from my Epson Inkjet & Magicolor prints.

On the Green side, I think Brother should redesign their packaging, the unit is almost the same size as HP but the box is 100% more, it''s so big that I can''t even fit it in regular NYC yellow cab, I probably need to rent a UHAL van the next time I buy one of this.

I was trying hard to love this printer and keep it even though the color prints are a little off, not until when my nephew drops by, look at the print and said to me, "nice terrazzo floor with beige field and gray border", with that comment, I realized it''s time to return the printer, since the actually floor have white field and green borders.

In fairness, I replaced this with a HP CP1518ni, Hp is even worst, prints much darker than any of my color laser, slower than Brother, slightly prints more red & orange, not as sharp and very muddy. I end up getting another Konica Minolta, Magicolor 2550, it''s the closes match of a laser print that you could get to a decent ink jet print. But if I have to pick between Brother and HP from this experience, I''ll take Brother without hesitation. And finally.....Thank you Staples, you are the best.

I picked this printer up at Øffice Ðepot yesterday and with some help because it weighs 64 pounds, got it home. Setup is very easy, even for someone without any experience with computer hardware. Just push a tab in, open the front, remove all the bright orange shipping things, pull out the drum unit, slide in the toner cartridges which match the letters (K into K, C into C, etc..), install the software, plug in the USB or Ethernet cable (which you supply yourself), and you are ready to print. Before you print, however, make sure you open the printer settings and configure it the way you want. Also access the printers menu and configure those. The DirectPrint option to print PDFs and JPG files from a USB drive directly is nice, but some USB drives will not work (Corsair Voyager will not). For the price it is an excellent printer, coupled with the fact that it comes with standard (not starter) toner cartriges, you can print hundreds of pages before you have to buy new toner.

This is a decent color laser printer at a good price. In terms of price, the printer with toner cartridges sells for little more than the toner cartridges alone. Maybe they are buying the toner refill business by giving away the printer itself. Another plus: it connects to my router so I can share it between my wireless Mac laptop and my PC desktop (even when the PC is asleep), which is great. Now the bad news. It''s a lot bulker than it looks just by seeing the picture. Make sure it fits your room and you''re comfortable with the weight before you buy. Second, the quality is no better than the Canon Ink jet printer I replaced. Part of this is because the default setting on the HL 4040 is 600 dpi. To get the higher resolution, you have to tweak the defaults. So if you really need a color laser, this may be a great choice. But if you''re expecting it to be better than an ink jet in terms of print quality, you''ll be disappointed.

Supplementary comment: the printer says all color toner cartridges are empty when they aren''t even close to being empty. You should be able to use the cartridge until the color stops, but that''s not how it works. This is a huge waste of money (it''ll easily double your cost of cartridges). So you need to learn how to unscrew the end cover of the cartridge and reset the internal switch that is triggered after a certain number of cycles. Not a step for the average user to take nor should it be necessary. Seriously, this is a show stopper.

An excellent printer engine, industrial and massive. A bit of a company printer at a consumer entry point.

Found the documentation to be poor, the illustrations were from CAD and not very helpful at installing the cartridges for the first time.

But persistence paid off and now I can''t help but love this printer. If you need to do some volume work and don''t like fettering away monies on inadequate sized ink cartridges, this is a great way to go entry level with color laser.

After about 8 months, haven''t experienced significant paper warp or any dark color banding issues. 1/3 paid for itself in inkjet cartridge refill costs.

We have purchase over 200 of these printers (even here at Amazon)

and they are pretty good until you run out of ink.

The Ink can print you about 2-3 months worth if used every

other day or so. But our customers, including ourselves,

have had nothing but head aches when it comes to changing

Ink Cartridges. 47 Customers have complained it will NOT

ACCEPT ''GENUINE'' Epson Cartridges. We owned 4 of them and

all 4 are currently wrapped up in their boxes ready to throw

out or send to a recycling center. All 4 printers

printed through 1 ink cycle then they started rejecting all

ink replacements. We bought ink here at Amazon rejected.

We tried the tech trick of pulling out the electrical cord,

and the USB cord, and it did accept 2 or 3 cartridges,

but eventually it started to reject all of them in time.

Keep in mind this printer has gotten fairy good reviews

the past year some individuals are being successful

with the printer but we suspect many reviews were

written before their 1st ink cycle went dry.

We noticed that (after installing the printers) The Epson

software started accessing the internet (or at least trying

to). This was to block any 3rd party Ink cartridges because

on one of the printers that WAS NOT on the internet it actually

acceptable 1 black ink 3rd party cartridge. The rest were

rejected even the "Genuine" Epson Cartridges.

Its difficult enough to have to purchase expensive

"Genuine" ink for these printers but to have them

rejected by your fairly new printer is appalling. We

have over 46 "genuine" ink cartridges that have been

returned to us (we no longer sell the ink). We used

some of the "rejected" ink on our Epson R260 models

and R280 model (those printers accepted the ink)

simply because the R260, R280 and this model -

"artisan" 50 use the same ink cartridge.

Customers have explained to us this printer model

has difficulty on accepting new cartridges no matter

where you purchased them. We have contacted

Epson by email, phone even writing them a letter,

but they yet to even try to return our messages.

Customers who have purchase this model, and have

not been subjected by the cartridge problem are very

fortunate and we are happy for them.

Overall, Epson has made this printer so INK

CARTRIDGE RESTRICTIVE that it has made us

impossible to recommend to anyone or even

give out for free.

While printing through its first ink cycle, it did

produce fine photos and fairly good text docs,

but after the ink was done it seems so was

the printer.

Update: We installed a CISS system on one

of the printers on Feb 1 2011: rejected.

On January 20th, the same model rejected

"Genuine ink" from a major store front. We

were fortunate to receive a refund on both

occasions. We aren''t trying anymore. Epson

keeps ignoring our calls.

This is a fantastic printer for the casual user, but can be problematic for critical uses.

This is the 6th Epson printer we''ve used. When printing out from Adobe Illustrator on all previous models, the size of the printout exactly matches the design.

When trying to print CD inserts on our new Artisan 50, booklets that are designed to be 119.5mm, end up being almost 125mm. May not sound like much, but once they''re cut, they don''t fit in the CD box. It''s very slow and tedious to modify all our layouts that are on file.

Previous models capable of printing on CD''s (such as the Stylus Photo R300) were dead on accurate.

The other annoying problem is that you can''t print from Illustrator directly to CD any longer. That was a great feature of the R300. In the Artisan 50, you have to use their amateurish CD print utility.

This is my first Epson printer. I''ve always owned HP but I was particularly interested in being able to print CD/DVD labels. I''ve owned this printer now for a couple of days and am totally pleased. The directions for getting started were easy, and I was able to begin use immediately. The quality of the labels are excellent, good color, looks professional and it prints quickly. I am not one to usually review products but this one, I found well worth the money, value, and am happy that I made the purchase. The only thing I''d change would be for the software that comes with the CD/DVD printer format, I wish it did more but I find it sufficient. I''d definitely recommend. You have probably read a great deal of reviews about how wonderful the Epson Artisan 50 printer is. And as far as printing goes, especially on CDs, those reviews are spot on. Only one problem. I will wager the overwhelming majority of those 5 star reviews are coming from people who have yet to go through their first replacement cartridge cycle. Oh what a surprise they have in store for them. The SOB corporate scum at Epson engineered the printers to a) use only 60-70% of the ink in their OEM cartridges, b) retailed their own 6 OEM cartridges at prices ranging from a minimum of 350% to over 1200% of what non-OEM ink cartridge suppliers are charging (up to $35 a single cartridge) and c) have a chip-reset technology installed in the printers which will "fail to recognize" the vast majority of all non-OEM catridges and an estimated 33% of the GENUINE OEM cartridges. This is AFTER the company was sued in a 2006 case for doing the exact same thing and then went out and re-engineered the Artisan series of printers to be even WORSE!

I swear to gawd, you can''t make this crap up. As is well known, it only requires one cartridge requiring replacement in an Artisan model to disable the entire machine. Meaning that if you have a black print job to do and the yellow or light magenta cartridge is below it''s functional level (usually meaning 30-40% of the ink remains but can''t be used due to the technology they installed to rip people off), you can''t finish your black only print job. And NO...every one of the six colors is NOT required to print black like I have heard some wags out there stating falsely. Even if that were true, in an emergency where you needed to print a single black text page out, you couldn''t even print it in lighter gray to get by. If you buy the non-OEM cartridges you might...just MAYBE get one or two of them to work for 2 or 3 off and on cycles of the printer, but eventually they will require replacement when the orange print light starts blinking and the "non-compatible" error appears on your screen. This is apparently due to the ability of the software to stealth "report" information on the replacement cartridges through Epson''s online access portal and then order the printer to shut down if the information retrieved fails to jibe with an OEM chip code. Even if you buy the OEM cartridges (which I did) and get lucky through the first four or five recycles, once you hit the end cartridge (dark cyan) the party is over. I have yet to hear of an Epson Artisan 50 that made it through two OEM dark cyan replacements without a cartridge rejection. Mine never made it through one. And for the record...Epson claims the ink usage issue is due to their fear of your precious printer being "damaged" should the ink level fall too low. To which I and most others say "BULLS***". The technology doesn''t even read the ink levels...it "estimates" them...all to the manufacturer''s massively profitable cause of "erring on the side of caution". What a surprise.

The bottom line here is that the engineers at Epson set out to rip off every person that ever bought their printers by making them dysfunctional in the presence of all but OEM cartridges and then radically overpricing those OEM cartridges to wring massive profits out of hoodwinked consumers. And not only that, they installed this bug filled technology so that it goes haywire (an estimated) 33% of the time and rejects even their own overpriced replacements forcing the NEW AND UNUSED overpriced cartridge to be tossed and replaced with another NEW overpriced cartridge. The factual truth being that any buyer of these printers will likely have FAR more than the $120 cost of the printer invested in ink before the second cycle of cartridges is used up. Sort of like Exxon offering super cheap new cars to people that get 2 MPG and then raising the price of their gas to $500 a gallon knowing all along they engineered the super cheap new cars to self destruct if off brand gas is put in them. Doesn''t take long to see that the price or handling/styling/quality characteristics of the car never figured into the equation to begin with.

Get the printer if you want....it actually does print pretty good and you might even pick one up for nothing from a current owner who hasn''t yet dropped it out of a 12 story window or backed over it with a truck after the ink ran out. There is a wealth of technology out there you can buy to circumvent the corporate Epson thieves. Supposedly there is a $30 chip reset device that overrides the reject tech and Amazon sells CIS ink tank equipment ($35-$80) which, if carefully installed, provide an endless ink supply and eliminates the problem at the source. But my question is why support these corporate scumbags and use their stuff to begin with knowing that you actually will have to go out and spend another $100+/to defeat their thieving chip reset tech? REQUEST: Any updates on NEW class action lawsuits against Epson would be helpful in this review section as well. Maybe the second or third class action lawsuit against these SOBs will be the charm.

UPDATE 2/19/2012: I contacted Epson to see what they would do about the failure for the Artisan 50 to recognize the infamous cyan (dark) cartridge. I spoke with a service rep. She ran me through everything I had already tried then promised to immediately send out another cyan cartridge to see if that would solve the problem. She was, of course, lying her ass off and I soon found out why. They had checked the warranty on my printer after I had given her the serial number, realized it was going to run out in 7 days, and never sent the cartridge. Once I tired of waiting for it and contacted them again with the reference number for the call, they told me..."Oh, we''re so sorry...your warranty has run out and we can no longer help you". Epson aren''t just low-life scumbags...they are criminals in my opinion. They have floated these absolutely worthless printers out there for the public to buy for the sole purpose of selling them enormously over-priced ink cartridges with technology designed to cause failure. Anyone who''s had the misfortune to buy one of these printers should explore joining into a class action suit against the company.

The Artisan 50 printer worked fine for 14 months and I went through 3 ink changes. The printer utility notified me that I needed new color ink. I changed the 5 color ink cartridges with new Epson brand cartridges costing $75. The printer would not recognize the new cartridges and issued a warning to use only Epson brand. I called Epson and they said it is a hardware problem and since the printer is beyond the 1 year warranty they could only offer me a discount on a new printer. So, the printer is now e-waste recycled and I will never buy an Epson product again.

I am not having the trouble the other reviewer mentioned. Both the blacks and all the color cartridges seem to last a reasonable amount of time. When you can buy a color photo printer for $90, you must expect to pay a premium for the ink cartridges. Most of my printing is photos or graphics, not a lot of text, which may partially account for the longer wear of the black cartridges. All in all, I am happy with this product.

I agree with the other reviewer. I have the MP500 and this is a very nice all in one scan/print/copy no fax machine. However be prepared to shell out some bucks for the PGI-5. I am going thru about 1 every 3 weeks at a cost of about 15 bucks on very lite print jobs. I always use the fast print option. There is no compatible as of yet. I went thru Office Depot where I paid $15 per but got free shipping on orders of $50 or more. I might have to bring back my Epson for my black ink print jobs. The other four cartridges are wearing very well. This is the last printer I will ever buy that doesn''t already have a compatible on the market. I am looking into refilling this cartridge with an ink kit however you have to disable the ink gauge on the printer.

I use these cartridges in my Canon MP970. I''m very happy with the printer and its years of good service and certainly have no complaints about the ink. The PGI 5 cartridge is larger and lasts longer than the other black cartridge in this printer. Quality has been good.

Several times I''ve used generic black cartridges bought from Databazaar. The cartridges are half the price of the Canons and results have been satisfactory, though the Canon inks are noticeably better.

I''ve also noticed that though they are the same size, the Canon cartridges do last longer than the generic types.

The ink cartridges are easy to install and easy to remove. Usually they last many weeks after the blinking warning of low ink appears on my monitor. I use them until the very end when they are totally empty.
