Microsoft EXCEL 97/ Visual Basic Step-by-Step Book & Disk

Microsoft EXCEL 97/ Visual Basic Step-by-Step Book & DiskThis book is a good INTRODUCTION to visual basic programming. If you have never used VB at all, this is a good book to expose you to what VB has to offer. But once you finish reading it, you will definitely feel the need to buy a REFERENCE book for VB.

This book was exactly what I needed: a good introduction to Visual Basic and how to use it in Excel 97. It assumes no prior VB experience, but it helps to have some programming experience to understand the vocabulary and concepts used. You will never be able to use Excel 97 to its full potential without knowledge of VB, trust me. I am continously amazed at the flexibility and power of Microsoft Office. This book allows Excel users to unlock this power. It should be noted that this book is not made as a reference, but as something to read from front to back.

This book can teach anyone to program in visual basic!

To get the most from this book you have to work through it methodically, doing all the exercises. If you have SOME experience of Excel macros, then you will be very tempted to skip the early chapters. Dont!! There are lots of very useful tips hidden in the text.

The book goes to a fairly advanced level, but does tend to rush through the advanced topics.

As a reference book its not very good, as it is near impossible to find what you are looking for. Many times I have half remembered something and not been able to find it again.

But as a teaching aid it is second to none. I am regularly asked to write simple macros for other people. These days I just give them this book and tell them to spend a couple of afternoons working through it!

If you are an expirenced user of VB or VBA this book probably won''t help you much as I found out, but my wife whom doesn''t have as much expirence found it to be really helpful. There are good lessons and the information seems to be all correct unlike some books I have had that have code that is wrong. If you are an expirenced user then I''d have to reccomend that you look for a better book.

This is a hand-holding book that teaches by example without explaining sufficiently the nuts and bolts of the VBA language. I was not able to make much use of it. In addition, it does not comprehensively cover VBA for Excel. I can appreciate that some readers might prefer the approach taken by this book however.

The first papertray sent didn''t work. I called HP (maybe I should have called Amazon) and they eventually sent another one (they really wanted to know if my printer was in warantee, which isn''t what didn''t work).

HP sent a new one in about 10 days and it worked fine.

The cost is high, but it now works perfectly giving me a legal size option. I wish it was 500 sheets so it would take full rheem of paper.

I have been a long time buyer of Lexmark laser printers. They have always been the best for printing signs on card stock and vinyl labels, and still are. The T650N however, is not as reliable as previous models. Previous models would run for many months or even years without a breakdown, even with heavy use. But I''ve had numerous T650N printers that have had to be sent for repairs within only a few weeks. It seems to be only small plastic parts that are breaking, so apparently there was a design change that is reducing reliability for us. The printer may be fine for paper only, but we stress them pretty bad with the card stock and vinyl labels.

We actually really like this printer, but are giving it three stars because the one we bought was defective and we had to return it after 1 day. To their credit, the factory sent us a new replacement with no hassles, and fairly quickly too. The replacement is working fine, but I was (and am) still a bit freaked out by a brand new printer (the first one) being broken from day one. Ask me again in a year, and we''ll see if the printer merits four stars. I can''t imagine a 5 Star printer.)

This is a solid business printer. The pages look great and the ink cartridges are reasonable. Setting it up was very easy right out of the box. The only negative is that it''s so big. Other Lexmark lasers are quite a bit smaller. Still, for the price this is a winner.

After a reload of the OS, my old HP laser was no longer compatible with my Mac computer, so I went looking for a color laser that did duplex printing (trying to be a bit green). My use is at home for personal as well as some business printing.

The set up was easy and the instructions clear. Printing in B&W single sided is fast and of high quality. I find the color printing to be a bit muted and not photo-like, but still acceptable. The biggest negative is the duplex printing. It works, but... When I select two-sided printing, it takes forever to print. It is so slow that I have given up using it completely. As I was hurrying out of the house on a road trip, I tried to print a Google map in duplex, and it took so long I simply left the house without the map. I don''t know what is going on inside, but this is so bad I''m shocked it ever was released.

Once I ignore duplex printing, and treat it like a nice feature I will rarely if ever use, then I am generally satisfied with the printer and recommend it for the price.

I''ve had this printer for over a year in my workplace, and it has been excellent for everything except printing envelopes. This is our networked printer, so our 5-person office all use it. We do a lot of printing and a lot of it is graphical and colorful.

When it comes to printing a single envelope, it jams the printer. We get around that by printing labels instead or using a different network printer to do envelopes. It was out of warranty when I discovered the issue; I wonder if it was a manufacturer''s defect in our machine (and may not be a problem in most machines.)

Print speed is very fast (it just takes about 15 seconds to warm up before first page out, then easily prints text only at 30 pages per minute (ppm)). It takes a long time to print graphics-heavy PowerPoint presentations, but if you''re printing multiple copies of a presentation, the first print is very slow and subsequent copies are quicker. Color graphics are excellent and crisp, and so is black text.

I would recommend this printer as long as you don''t need to print envelopes.

I replaced an aging tank-like Konica-Minolta color laser which never worked right and cost a fortune to maintain. This printer has worked fine with Mac OSX in a wireless Airport Express environment for two years. It did have a failed power supply for the fuser which gave error messages. It was fixed in home for free. I have been pleased with the cost of replacement cartridges. They seem to last longer than my former color laser and cost less than half to replace. You are replacing toner only, not an entire roller assembly. The toner is available everywhere. It is not fast at start-up nor when printing Adobe PDF''s. I upgraded memory and added a second paper drawer. For some reason when the paper runs out on the top drawer, it does not automatically shift to the next drawer as other printers do. Maybe this is a software issue that I have not found.

Pros: Less expensive toner replacement than others; Has worked with Mac OSX; Has a single feed slot; compact.

Cons: Slow start-up time. Duplexing feature is external-you need to remove each page as it is processed so that the multiple pages do not get drawn back into the unit and jam. If you do a lot of duplexing, look elsewhere; does not automatically switch paper drawers when empty.

I was very impressed with the speed and quality of the color printing when using the standard page sizes. However, when I added the 650 page add on tray in order to get the statement sized paper feeder, (5.5" X 8.5"), the printing slows down to about 8 10 ppm. I have been in contact with Lexmark regarding this issue, nothing that I have tried has helped the speed, and I have the feeling that this is simply the best it will do. I still think it is the best printer for the money, but if a business expected to use the statement feeder for volumes of printing, they would be quite disappointed.

I would love to give this a 5-star review from the start, but because of the setup and early operation problems I had I just can''t. I do wonder if some of the problems might be attributed to Amazon--no proof of that!--but I do suspect I got a slightly used printer, perhaps one of those returned by the dismayed fellow reviewing below.

First problem out of the box: No printer cable. All documentation in their manual say a cable should have been included. But the cable from my inkjet worked on it, a standard printer cable, so that wasn''t a big problem for me.

Setup was easy, following along their included instructions. I did wonder at the amount of toner powder inside the printer at various points (one thing that made me think it might have been a bit used). All set up, with printer drivers installed and... nothing. Didn''t work.

Call to tech support, about a 10 minute wait time. Be prepared for a tech support call--get a flashlight, screwdriver (Phillips), lens cleaning cloth, paper towels, a flat clean surface to place big components, and magnifying glass or reading glasses if needed for close, small, fine work.

The first problem, the total non-op, was fixed by removing a back plate and reseating some cables. Then it printed. Second problem was "voids" in the black portion of the printing (color was fine). These were invisible lines running the full length of the page. Online help suggestions first recommendation was a new toner cartridge. Well, I wasn''t going to waste a full, very expensive toner cartridge, so was able to reformat my (rush) print job to get around the voids and did a huge print job. After that, with the new toner cartridge not fixing the problem, another session with tech support had me take the printer apart again and clean a glass strip which had gobs of toner obscuring it.

Super! Now the printer reaches the 5-star portion of its review.

With everything working as it ought, this printer is dazzlingly, deliciously fast. Color and/or black and white, the pages fly out. I did a two-sided 900 page print job in a matter of hours. That''s about 3600 printed sheets. When asked how long this would have taken with the inkjet, I answered, "Does that include the five trips to Walmart to get more ink cartridges?"

And the quality is stunning. The colors are gorgeously saturated, the lines sharp. None of the wet ink or moisture problems of an inkjet. The pages look fabulous.

The black toner cartridge that comes with the printer printed well past its maximum total number of pages. The second black toner cartridge started to say "low" _before_ it''s maximum number of pages. One downside--once it says a cartridge is "low", do not shut the printer off! It printed perfectly for hundreds of pages after it said it was low, but shutting it off overnight apparently sent it to "empty" and it refused to print any more.

The duplexer... it''s fast. It works well. It never jammed. But, oh my goodness, what a mess it made spewing papers all over the place. If you have any duplex job over 10 pages or so, especially if you want it collated, you''re better off doing one side at at time, flipping them and sending them back through for side two. The output pages stay reasonably neat on single-sided but are a mess duplexed.

Only about 100 pages at a time in the standard paper tray. I''m uncertain of the larger paper tray because of the mess it would make in the output tray. More than 50 or so sheets in the output tray and they start falling on the floor.

This printer is said to be an "Energy Star" printer. That''s just funny. My office lights dim when this power sponge prints.

So, a three-star review for a five-star printer that I (now) love.

**Added the additional memory--easy to do, took off the same back plate (6 screws) I had to take off to reseat the cables to make it work in the first place. Stick the memory in. Printer recognized it immediately. Here''s the odd part, though, it seems *slower* with the added memory! Printing is just as fast but the wait time until the printing starts seems a bit longer. I have not tried a huge, complex print job yet, however, so that may be where the added memory pays off. BIG CATCH: The added memory for this printer from any "official" source was about $600. We paid $30 for the same new memory card. Shop around and don''t overpay!

**Added the large second paper tray. So far so good. Installation is nothing--just set the printer on top of the added paper tray. A couple experiments on the computer with tray selection and it worked perfectly.

Databazaar shipped me the item, but failed to put any packing materials in the box to keep the cartridge from banging around in the large box during shipping. Not that it needed much, but I figured the huge letters stating "FRAGILE" across the top of the cartridge box would give a hint that maybe a bit of packing material may be warranted here. They are not saving any money by shipping fragile items this way.

Onto the product itself...

The prints are perfect, and I would put good money on it that no one could tell the difference between the prints from this cartridge and one that came from HP. And do they really come from HP? I mean, it''s not like HP owns the facility that creates the cartridge; they simply contract it out to places that make other cartridges. So, it is very likely that some of these third-party cartridges have once (or do) manufacture HP cartridges.

The markings on this cartridge match up exactly with the markings on the HP cartridge I pulled out of the printer. Not a copy of the cartridge shell, but perfect stampings. So, I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that it is the same manufacturer for HP cartridges. Or, they get their shells from the HP manufacturer. Either way, it is almost indistinguishable from the original HP, and in almost every way.

The chip says "RECHARGE O8NON-HP12" on it. It reset the counter and the low toner light turned off on my 1320.

The paper sleeve that protects the drum during shipping is really cheap and came apart in pieces rather than just puling out in one piece. For those that gorilla grip everything and have no patience, you may want to take it easy lest you want pieces of protection paper in the drum.

The cartridge is surrounded by an AirPac pillow bag and a thick, puncture-proof, silver bag. No recycle bag or even documentation on recycling.

The cartridge-specific label on the outside of the box says "Made in China" and the generic "Premium Laser Cartridge" box is printed with "Toner made in Japan". Hmmm, which is it? Doesn''t matter to me, but to some country-of-origin-sensitive people this could pose a problem.

That''s all. It works, and works well. I can easily recommend this product for use in your HP LaserJet 1320.

Bought 3 of these cartridges in may. Print quality was mediocre on the first 2 cartridges. The second cartridge lasted shorter compared to the first (with around the same printout load). Print quality of the third cartridge is BAD. The pages come out with black lines. Totally unacceptable if you need to send out a letter.

Cartridge worked fine for about 100 pages, then fell apart. The pin that holds the drum in the cartridge fell out and the drum shifted rendering the printer unusable and jamming the cartridge inside. It took 15 minutes of wiggling and turning the printer to different angles to finally get the cartridge out and even then it came out in pieces.

I am a computer tech certified on HP products and usually have good luck with remanufactured cartridges but this one is simply not worth it.

I use a lot of these labels to tag and mark items around the office and the home. We like to sort DVDs by genre and we use a color coding system. I also like to write on these labels with a Sharpie® to price garage sale items for example.

I build servers and it is important when you are removing drives not to reinsert them out of order. I use these labels to number them so I always reinsert them back into the same storage locations.

These little labels are very handy and I like how they stick well but can be removed without leaving a gooey mess behind. You can pull them off of a DVD cover or a hard disk drive and not even know it was there. I also have them on hard disk drives that do get warm and I have experienced no issues with them coming off by accident or getting too sticky.

They have a million uses, they are colorful, easy to see and they are inexpensive. I like them and I am sure you will too!

Great cartridge for the Canon PC785 and PC700 series copiers. It is small. The cartridge does need to be shaken lightly, frequently to get even toner distribution and also will last longer if you shake it vigorously at the end of its near time lifespan. Also, the number of copies per cartridge isn''t quite as much as larger copier''s but is worth it overall in its use and economy.

Samsung CLX-6200FX Color Laser Multifunction Printer

Samsung CLX-6200FX Color Laser Multifunction Printer
  • Color laser printer produces up to 21 ppm for efficient office use
  • Time-saving one-touch automatic duplexing feature
  • Includes a 250-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray
  • Durable monthly cycle of 65,000 pages
  • Measures 25.6-by-25.4-by-36.2-inches

DISCLAIMER: I actually bought the CLX-6210FX, the only difference being a duplexing automatic document feeder (instead of the single-sided automatic document feeder) and optional hard disk and wireless print server functionality (sold separately, of course). The CLX-6240FX comes with the hard disk (also can accept the optional wireless print server), and, according to the specs, boasts a slightly higher print speed (25 pages-per-minute color/bw letter-sized documents vs. 20 ppm for the first two--note that this drops by half when duplex printing). I also bought this from a Canadian retailer (DirectDial), but given the lack of reviews for this family of Multi-Functional Printers (MFPs), I thought I''d post it here (and do it thoroughly).

*SETUP*

The 100-lb shipping box (approximately 2'' x 2'' x 3'' high) showed up outside my house a few days ago and required two of us to man-handle down to the office where it was to be set up (Samsung helpfully provides perforated handles to help with this). The instructions for (properly) taking the box apart are on top of the box and make break-down a snap. Once the box is disassembled, the printer is much easier to move to where you want to locate it.

After removing the bits of tape that hold the unit together, the toners were fairly easy to install. One thing I instantly noticed about these, compared to the last few Samsungs I''ve used (ML-1440, and CLP-500) is that each of the toner cartridges comes with its own drum (which you shouldn''t touch or keep exposed to light)! One less consumable to replace in the long run (and probably how it can achieve such high--and constant--print rates, each cartridge transfers its toner to the belt simultaneously instead of having to do multiple passes for each color).

You can connect the MFP directly to a computer using a USB cable, or to a network via 10/100 ethernet. I chose the latter, as I wanted to be able to easily share it--I think the only difference is that you can''t use the scanner as a TWAIN device (but this is made up for, as I''ll outline later). You can assign the printer a static IP from the front panel, or use DHCP (default) to pull a network-assigned address (which was statically assigned using my WRT-54GL router).

The software took a few minutes to install from the included CD (post-script driver, regular driver, scanner, etc.), and it was able to automatically detect it on the network--not sure if it''ll do this when you''re printing, so you''re probably better off giving it a static IP, however which way you go about doing it. As we''ve come to expect these days, there was a nice web-accessible interface (http://ip-of-printer) that gives status (and state of consumables), counter, security options, etc.

*PRINTING*

Works wonderfully! I printed off 450 legal-sized colored (mostly text) pages in around 25 minutes. Good (IMO) color reproduction, and crisp, readable text. If you''re used to certain other printers (at least, Dells and Lexmarks in my experience) there isn''t the same waxy, almost glossy feel in the output, but rather, a more matte texture (something it shares with the CLP-500). It does take a minute or so for the fuser to warm up from a cold start, and presumably, from sleep mode as well (length of time until it enters sleep mode is adjustable).

Of course, I printed off the requisite high-res color "test picture" (a Spiderman 3 wall paper I had), and it came through with good (IMO) color reproduction, and little banding (I had to really stare at it for a while to notice a bit of banding in one corner--this disappeared after an inch or so). I would scrutinize this more, but as I don''t do a great deal of image work, it''s hard to justify churning out more pictures.

How did the toner survive? Well, it comes shipped with the "standard" toners which yield 2500 (black) or 2000 pages (cyan, magenta, yellow), according to ISO/IEC 19798 standards. You can also get high-yield toners which yield 5500 (black) or 5000 letter-sized pages (CMY), again, according to ISO/IEC 19798. What exactly is ISO/IEC 19798? I have no idea, and to find out, you need to shell out a few grand to the ISO (International Organization for Standardization). Though, to be fair, more and more printers seem to rate according to this same standard, and (knowing standards documents put out by engineers) it''d probably come in several binders. But even a synopsis would be nice.

Anyways, after 450 (legal-sized) pages of mostly green text, I had run the yellow down to 40%, the blue to 60%, and the rest had barely been touched.

*COPYING*

I copied the image I had printed off, and reproduction was good, with a little graininess (the copying resolution, as far as I know, is fixed at 600 x 600). You can select which type of original (image, text, etc.) you have, but I haven''t played around with this very much. Text reproduction works quite well. According to the manual, it does everything a nice little office photocopier should be able to do: edge-erase, collation, zoom, etc., but I haven''t really tested this feature.

*SCANNING*

According to the manual, the scanner is capable of up to 36-bit 600x1200 dpi (optical) or 4800x4800 dpi (enhanced) resolution when used in TWAIN mode, and somewhere between 100 and 600 dpi (adjustable) when used in scan-to-USB/PC/e-mail modes. After installing the SmartThru software, I was able to scan in a document, and have it show up in the ''My Pictures'' folder on my networked computer (there''s a dialogue on the 2-line LCD that you''re lead through when you press the ''Scan'' button, setting mode, resolution, destination, etc.) While PDF and JPG output worked fine, it seemed to have some troubles with TIF output (i.e. all that resulted was an impossibly small file).

*CONCLUSION*

For me, it came down to this unit or the very similar Brother MFC 9840cdw. Both even have the same delighter: nifty, stand-alone USB-key operation (scan to, and print-from PDF or various image formats)--something I haven''t used. While both have a very similar speed, features, and toner cost-per-page (I took this and the Brother--which uses a 5% page-coverage toner yield--at face value), the Brother will require drum and waste-toner bottle replacements, something not needed for the Samsung (both require transfer belt replacements at 50,000 sheets).

These, along with my previous good experiences with Samsung printers (and really noticeable banding in the admittedly-single output of Brother output I got my hands on) was what made the choice for me. While the Samsung is more expensive (~$75), this works out to be fairly negligible in the long run. At the cost I think this is an excellent SOHO or small workgroup all-in-one, which handles standard office fare very well.

I don''t think I''ve ever written a review before on Amazon. At least not that I can remember. But I wanted to write about this printer. Geesh. How hard is it to make a good printer now a days? It would appear like it''s nearly impossible if you have been through the agony of the HP experience. I could write a small book on the problems I''ve had with HP printers over the years. I vowed to give up on HP when I bought a new printer.

Enter the Samsung CLX-6200FX.

It took me all of about 5 minutes after getting it out of the box, to print something. If it were an HP, I would have had to endure 20 to 30 minutes of software installs. One after the other. They try to install everything they can, most of which you''ll never use. With this, I put the disk in, clicked a couple of times, told it that the printer was hooked to my network and voila... I was printing.

Did the same install on 3 of our other computers in the house, all hooked into my wireless router. (Actually, one of our computers is wired into the router and the other three are hooked via wifi t o the router.

It''s relatively quiet. It only takes a few moments to warm up from being asleep. Print quality is just fine. It feels solid. Not cheap. It weighs a TON. Be prepared to have either a tall man to lift it out of it''s box or to be creative and break down the box with a knife to get to it. It''s really heavy and not easy to get out of the box with the box intact.

I especially like that the software allows me to fax a document from my computer, just by selecting the fax driver when I go to "print" it. The first time you do it (if you''re accessing it via a router) you have to make it "find" the printer but it only takes a second or two. Then you can fax away. AWESOME. (You have to have the machine hooked to a phone line, of course.)

I just can''t tell you how nice it is to have a good quality printer that doesn''t try to install the space Shuttle''s operating system when installing the driver. Quick and easy and very smooth. Thanks, Samsung.

Incidentally... I was stationed in Korea 20 years ago and Samsung was thought of as a REALLY cheap electronics maker that made crap (Goldstar and Samsung = cheap crap.) Oh how that has changed. Samsung is probably THE premier international electronics company now. Probably even better than Sony, for the most part. (IMHO)

Update 1/3/12: I''ve had this printer now for 2.5 years. Still works great. However, I did lose the ability to scan a document to my computer desktop. This could be a configuration issue, not sure. But I can still scan an image file (jpg) to a thumb drive via the USB port. Just can''t scan to a PDF file. That is definitely annoying. But the printing still works like a charm. Best investment I''ve ever made in a piece of hardware.

I got this unit because of the bang for the buck, and was impressed at how open they were in supporting Macs and Linux. I am thrilled at how great it works, especially with Macs. I have an all-Mac network and connected this unit through ethernet to share the printer. You have to go to the Samsung site to download the software separately, but once you do, it''s smooth sailing.

My Leopard and Tiger machines immediately found and configured the printer via Bonjour, but I also used IPP on a couple with no problem. There''s a native Mac "Smart Panel" to control some default settings, but the main administration is done through a web interface on the machine. There''s also a Java applet to let you view the print queue, but Leopard''s native print queue viewer does that just fine. The TWAIN drivers work fine in Photoshop, and you can scan through ethernet with it. Samsung definitely took care of Macs with this release.

We like it, it''s reliable, print output for color is ok, not steller. It also seems slow. When we select to copy, it warms up. Fax, "Warming Up" we get ''registering'' all the time. Wouldn''t likely buy another one, but the price and delivery were good. Support from Samsung is marginal to bad.

Everything is ok.. only gripe is that the printer could use a better manual feed input. other than that it scans, prints, and whatever just like it should. IP networking setup took 5 mins.. not bad.

Although it looks like a nice printer and I sure would like to use it, I can''t. You must have a pictbridge enabled camera in order to use this printer. It says, "Photo Print Features Direct Printing from Memory Cards" but that is not correct, you cannot do so. However, I can vouch that it is lightweight, small and has a cute carrying handle.

The test print built in photo was great... but quite a few of my own hi-res material printed out with a few streaks across the photo. The darker the background the better the output. I haven''t used it enough to judge if the ink cartridges are very costly compared to other printers. I bought it because it was a great deal and I had gotten a bunch of 4 x 6 paper free and wanted to use it up easily. You may want to check out the more up-to-date models (i.e. use of SD cards and image display models) before you settle on this model. I was so pleased to find the A310 HP photo printer that I was looking for. It was exactly the item I had not been able to find with HP as they are no longer being manufactured. It was labeled as used, but had not been even removed from it''s orginal packaging. The only drawback was that the ink cartridge had dried out and was not usable, otherwise it would have been a real bargain basically free, as the price of the printer was less than the price of the ink cartridge! Thanks, Amazon

Canon Selphy CP740 Compact Photo Printer (2094B001)

Canon Selphy CP740 Compact Photo Printer
  • Portable photo lab createsstunning photos from any location
  • Automatic red-eye detection and reduction
  • Print withoutcomputer by using built-in retractable USB cable
  • Prints feature protective overcoating that resists photo fading for 100 years
  • 1-year limited warranty

I have been VERY pleasantly surprised at the quality of the prints generated by the Selphy 740. I have another printer I use for larger (8x10) printing & photo''s but I wanted something that turned out native 4x6" prints for easy photo-albuming and spontaneous, on-the-spot giving to friends & family. (The lack of such traditional prints in this traditional form-factor is the great bane of digital photography, IMHO!)

The BEST thing about this printer is the "layered film" technology used to actually print the images. I was a bit worried when I received the printer and discovered that, rather than using ink cartridges, a spooled cassette of CMY-sequenced films are used. This mechanism always struck me as a bit wasteful but I honestly believe it DOES produce the best images, with virtually no pixelization visible in the print. There is also a FOURTH layer, which is clear, that is overlaid atop the 3 separately applied CMY layers. This clear layer gives a WONDERFUL "photographic print" feeling to the final product -I''ve always disliked how inkjet printers produce prints in which it is obvious (visually & tactilely) that the ink is simply sitting on top of the paper. The uppermost "clear layer" applied by the Selphy system results in a print that is virtually indistinguishable from one printed by a photo lab.

I''m not sure what to think about other reviewers criticism that the prints come out dark -I believe this is more a comment on the camera and/or monitor on which the images are created & viewed. I generally bump up the saturation and brightness "one click" in the printer''s properties dialog before I print a photo, but I do this same thing on all printers.

I concede that $0.26 per print is SLIGHTLY on the pricey side and that you can get less expensive prints at CostCo that (might?) look a BIT better, but I for one know that I am more than likely to never actually get such photo''s printed. Having this Selphy 740 printer at home, where it is easily & spontaneously available, and generating very good prints is a VERY worthwhile value to me.

Thumbs up!!

***UPDATE*** It''s 3 years later and I still use this printer and am still loving the results. Yeah, it prints dark but I just make it a standard practice to use the "printer properties" to bump up the brightness by 2 notches and bump up the contrast by 1 notch. I have become the local photomart for several of my friends & family. My thumb is still up!!

I needed a small photo printer basically to make some homemade personalized postcards, invitations and to make albums about my little kids. I was not looking for something to replace bulk orders of pictures from photo-processing centers (you cannot beat their prices anyway). I read reviews and found that printers with dye-sublimation technology produce pictures of high quality and the life-time of those pictures (around 100 years) is much higher than that of regular printers. Among many printers with this technology I found CP740. I decided that is right for me because its inexpensive (I paid about $80 including taxes and stuff), compact and I have a Canon camera, so it fits it. When I got the printer I was amazed how small it is. Yes, you need to put in the special cassete with paper before you start working, but when the printer is just sitting there, it doesn''t take more space than a small thick book. The quality of pictures is outstanding, and I can improve brightness and such stuff before I produce a picture (hundreds of times I''ve received completely dark pictures from photo centers God knows why I sent them normal images). I can make stickers (really nice for my daughter''s school appliances and for the envelops), make thank-you cards and postcards (my Mom just lo-oved her "happy birthday" card with faces of her grandkids) and small credit-card-sized pictures for scrapbooks. Of course, you need some additional software if you want to make whimsical cards, but there''s plenty for free download. And I actually like the fact, that the paper and the "cartridge" you need are always in the same package. The dye never dries out and you know that it''s enough to produce the same number of great pictures as there are pieces of photo-paper in the kit. I like this printer and I am happy with it.

My fiance got me this printer for my birthday and I love it! Printing photos is quick and easy whether you''re printing images off a computer, the camera or a memory card. The software install was fast and I was able to print one image in about 30 seconds or so. It is super compact which is a plus on my cluttered desk!

There are 2 reasons why I give it a 4 out of 5. First, the print images came out slightly darker than they appeared on the screen. Even when I lightened the images using Picassa/Photoshop, the prints still came out slightly darker than what I had anticipated. Secondly, due to the small size of the printer itself, you can only print images up to 4" wide.

Aside from that, this printer is fast, easy and produces great picture keepsakes.

This little printer is great, and I think it is pretty quick, considering the quality. Every time I walk into a Pharmacy that has one of those photo printers, it''s usually broken, and I can''t get the prints I want conveniently. This thing is good to have around for when you want some prints. While not shown in my video, the white edges are perforated, and come off of the print, leaving you with a traditional 4x6 size, with postcard markings on the reverse side. The unit also has a built in cord, if you''d rather connect directly to PictBridge or Direct Print compatible camera. It''s easiest to simply use a memory stick or SD card.

I got many good prints from this printer for the first year. As soon as the warrantee ran out the printer quit working. Cost of fixing exceeded the cost of the printer.

I have had 4 Canon printers over the past 10 years, only the oldest, a BJC-210 still works.
