One of the major complaints about the iPad when it was first introduced was that one could not print from it. Apple heard us and with the release of IOS (iPhone Operating System) 4.2 the company included Apple Air Print a technology that allows, or is supposed to allow the iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch to print wirelessly from the device to an ever-increasing number of Hewlett Packard printers like the "HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Inkjet Printer."

Hewlett Packard upped the ante with this All-n-One (AIO) unit by including wireless and giving the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Inkjet Printer an e-mail address (@hpeprint.com address) from which one can print from any computer, iPad--or other mobile device--via a technology called "HP e-Print." One can also print wirelessly to an Apple mobile device like an iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone etc. via Apple Air Print.

Un-Packing

Make no mistake the "HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus" is a hefty printer checking in a 21 pounds. And while the unit does not require a two-man lift, it will require some finesse to get it out of the box and onto a flat surface. One unboxed it took me a little less than 15 minutes to completely assemble the printer including the duplexer unit. Thankfully the power supply is built-in, so no heavy power brick to find a place for.

Network Setup

Before connecting the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus network via Ethernet (RJ-45), or Wireless the decision must be made to utilize one or the other communications medium, but not both. USB can be utilized with either configuration. Since I wanted my iPad to "speak" to the printer and print I installed the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus utilizing wireless and USB and I can print either way as well as utilize the scanner to print-to-computer. Wireless set-up was effortless using DHCP; all I needed to know was the network WPA2 passcode.

Wireless Printing & e-Print

One of the selling points of the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO is of course the ability of the iPad to print to the device either wirelessly (Air Print) or via e-Print. I am happy to report that both work!

As I stated above Apple IOS version 4.2 shipped with Air Print, which allows the iPad to wirelessly "talk" to Air Print enabled printers like the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. Once the printer was set up on the wireless network I could see the printer on the iPad from Air Print enabled applications like Safari, select the printer and print. G that was it, no setup needed on the iPad.

HP''s e-Print also works like a charm, most of the time. With e-Print the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is assigned a customizable e-mail address to which one can forward e-mail''s to be printed from iPad, iMac, iPod, or PC as long as the printer is connected to the Internet. This feature works reasonably well; it is supposed to be able to print attachments, but this is a hit or miss proposition; i.e. sometimes it works, sometime not, sometimes it print half a page. However, overall, I am pleased with e-print.

Software Installation

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is connected primarily to an Apple iMac 2.7GHz machine with 4GB RAM, 1TB hard drive running OS X Lion Version 10.7.2. Out of the box the software disc will not work with Lion 10.7.2, so I had to download a software update from Apple and another from HP, but both worked seamlessly and I was able to get up and running with full functionality (including scan-to-computer) in under 15 minutes. And I have to say for the record I like the iMac interface for the printer better than the Windows 7 interface.

Printing

Pretty straight forward; the software installation process installed a full set of print drivers which in turn give you complete control over the printing process, including two-sided printing. The HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can also print from inserted USB flash drives and or MMC/SD Media cards.

Scanning

The HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus offers up both a 50-sheet ADF and flatbed scanner for use. Initialing the scanning process can be accomplished from the included software, inserting a page(s) into the ADF, or the units control panel. Once an item is placed into the ADF or on the flatbed scanner glass surface, you can push the Scan button on the front panel, at which time you choose where to scan to: Computer, USB Flash Drive, or Memory Card. Once a destination is chosen, you can then chose to scan to file (.PDF is an option), e-mail, or photo.

Copy Process

This process, like printing is pretty straight forward; both color and black & white copies can be made, up to 99 at a time. Because there is a duplexer installed two-sided copies can be made in a number of different configurations, including 1-side original/ 1-side copy; 1-side original/ 2-side copy; 2-side original/ 1-side copy; 2-side original/ 2-side copy. Copies can also be enlarged up to 144%, or reduced down to 25% of original.

Working with Photos

As stated above, the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus will accept input from a number of commercially available portable memory storage devices, slots for which are located on the left hand side of the printer underneath the cartridge insertion flip down panel. Simply insert the memory card and the photos it contains are displayed on the small 4.6" touch-screen color display on the right hand side of the unit.

Conclusion

Overall I like the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO, because it works seamlessly with my iMac and I can print to it from my iPad. The design is a little austere; there are no buttons to push because everything is controlled from the color (touch screen) display panel, which might prove problematic if it ever decides not to work. But, there is always the control set on the computer, so...

The built-in wired Ethernet capability, coupled with USB and wireless make the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-AIO Inkjet Printer a versatile, flexible unit that is ideal for a small home office setting and well as workgroup setting. I''ll start by saying that I think this is an excellent machine.

My journey of buying a multi-function printer started with purchasing an HP Officejet Pro 8500 all-in-one. This was a top-rated machine, and I was excited when it arrived. Unfortunately, the particular 8500 that we received, although easy to setup, jammed constantly. After a week of jamming headaches, I headed online to Amazon to arrange for a return. When considering a replacement, I saw that the 8600 series OfficeJet printers had arrived, so I needed to consider them as well. At only about $25 more than I had paid for the 8500, I took the plunge.

The first decision with the 8600 was which of the three models to order. The basic model was quite attractively priced, and has features similar to the Plus and Pro models. The Plus model''s big advantage (in our case) was the larger display. Other features separating it from the basic model are the larger automatic document feeder (50 vs 35 sheets) and a slightly faster print speed (20 vs 18 ppm black and 16 vs 13 ppm color, according to the HP website.) Had we upgraded to the "Premium" model, we could have added an additional 250-sheet paper tray. The Premium model might be appropriate for a small workgroup which does does lots of printing, but in our case, would be extreme overkill based on our printing volumes -one ream of paper can last us many months!

Display: This printer went to my mother-in-law''s house and she''s not the most tech-savvy consumer. We chose the "Plus" model because of the larger display and it was a great choice! The display is great large, bright, and intuitive. My mother-in-law has no problem completing most tasks and following the very good on-screen video instructions.

Configuration: The printer was easy to configure without even connecting to a computer using the on-screen display to connect to the wi-fi network. In all, it probably took about 10-15 minutes, most of which was allowing the printer to complete its self-configuration checks and print head alignment. The software was easy to install on the computer, and the computer was able to discover the printer on the network almost instantly using the drivers on the included CD-ROM.

Printing: Print quality is quite good and very fast -the last time I purchased an inkjet printer was about 7 years ago, and the one this one replaced was 8 years old. Speed has come a long way in that time!

Copying: Again, this was quite simple. I especially like the easy on-screen options for dealing with two-sided originals and copies, allowing for all duplexing options without any additional fuss or difficulty.

Faxing: Also a straightforward operation, there were a few points worthy of comment. First, the fax self-configuration was great, and I appreciated the self-check during the setup process so that sending a "test fax" to someone was not necessary. Also, it worked fine with the AT&T U-Verse digital phone service -not all fax devices play well with digital phone services, so this was very nice. My mother-in-law also commented about how she appreciated that you can enter the destination fax number before inserting the document to be faxed into the feeder a nice feature as the destination fax number is usually at the top of the front page, which is often hidden by the document feeder once inserted.

Scanning: The network scanning was quite easy, and worked seamlessly something not true of all network scan devices. My previous experience had been that devices scanning over the network have some usability problems, and that they work best when connected directly to the computer. No issues here, however it worked great right out of the box with no physical connection to the computer.

Driver: The included drivers on the CD-ROM worked just fine, as well as those downloaded from the HP website. My one small complaint is that when auto-discovering the printer using Windows 7, Windows fails to install a usable driver. The user must first go to the HP website, download an appropriate driver, then install the driver directly. These extra steps were time-consuming and annoying but not enough for me to deduct a star.

Ink: The ink cartridges were very easy to insert and replace. I particularly appreciate that they are simple units and don''t have the tape-covered electrical contacts common on the older generation of cartridges which could sometimes come off during installation.

Overall: I give this printer a strong recommendation, and 5 stars. You may need to decide which model is best for you -depending on pricing, the larger display of the "Plus" model might not be worthwhile, and the price of the basic model is quite attractive. For us and our given user, the larger display was key and worth the extra cost. I''d buy one again!

Purchased this printer to replace another HP printer that had served it''s usfullness. This printer obviously is a work horse and prints out quality prints and photes without hesitation. Have tested it on almost everything without a glitch. Was easy to set up and meshed into our wireless system without hassle. Set up menu has been designed for folks like me that are not experts in the field. You won''t go wrong with this purchase. Highly recommend. So far this has proven to be a quality product. Using for iphone, ipad and wireless computer printing.

I initially was so pleased with this printer:

1) easy to install/setup.

2) very fast.

3) duplex printing.

4) wireless.

5) etc...

UNTIL... I tried printing photos.

I have two type of photo paper Home:

1)Genuine HP "Arm&Leg cost" photo paper.

2)The very popular Costco (kirkland) premium photo paper.

I had no problem with the HP paper.

The only way I managed to have the printer feed the kirkland paper,

was by sticking a piece of masking tape (as found on a forum), on the

back of the paper. This gave enough grip to the picking roller, to

make the paper work with this printer.

The same paper works flawlessly in other HP printers and other brands.

If you plan on using this printer for photo printing without using HP photo

paper, I suggest you to google "hp 8600 will not feed photo paper"

Despite all the models on the market, and the rather cheap prices for All in ones, it seems to be impossible to find one unit that does everything well. It''s sort of like finding a mate, you just might have to settle on some things.

I previously had the HP 7310 all in one, which I previously reviewed on here, but a lightning storm fried the fax board in it. The rest of the unit still worked, but I didn''t want to get a separate fax machine. I called HP''s customers service, and all they wanted to do was sell me a new expensive unit, at what they told me was a discount price. It was actually much cheaper elsewhere online.

This would be a five star unit if not for some major flaws. I chose this unit mainly because it has an answering machine and cordless phone built in. I also liked the glossy black look of the unit.

The unit has a very nice 4.3 lcd touchscreen which works quite well. Its responsive, has good color and easy to use. It tilts up and down, but this is largely unnecessary. The menus however, are a bit tricky to use, and it takes some playing with it to find out where all your settings and adjustments are located. Also when using the screen to scroll answering machine messages, I found it somewhat difficult to scroll back to listen to a previous message. It keeps taking you back to the beginning of the message you are listening too. It''s actually easier to scroll forward and go back around, if you don''t have many message saved.

The buttons on the front are raised and are the perfect size. They have good tactile feel and they allow you to easily change your functions, fax, copy, scan or photo capture.

There are some slots on the front of the unit for things like a USB flash drive which you can print your pictures directly from. It shows them on the lCD screen, and you scroll through them. It also is Bluetooth and WIFI capable, though mine is hooked with a wire, so I haven''t tried these.

As far as the design of the unit, its mostly good. Its smaller and more compact then many units. It only features a 15pg Adf, versus the 30-50pg ones you see on some machines, but I rarely need to fax or copy more then 5pgs at a time anyway. What matters more is that this unit actually scans all the pages one at time, where my HP, frequently would grab too many pages and you ended up having to send them through one at time.

Faxing or printing in black in white was relatively quick, though trying to fax in color took about a minute per page. You do not want this unit for printing pictures. The people came out looking so red, it looked like they had been severely burned. Granted it was on regular paper, but I''ve printed decent pictured on regular paper before. You also will probably don''t want this unit if you are going to do a lot of scanning photos. It has a 36bit scanner versus the 48bit seen on some other units.

The software in general I felt was good, but the OCR software sucked. It scanned all the words right, unlike my previous hp''s software, but it completely ignored all spacing and format. Not ideal, if you want to scan and edit a form.

The power cord is not detachable from the unit, not a big deal to me, but it was datachable on my old HP. What I really didn''t like was that the USB cord instead of attaching at the back, is threaded up inside the machine. Because of the bulb near the end of the wire, it requires bending and folding the wire some to get it attached and down in the triangle space provided. This is not good for the wire.

The paper tray which pulls all the way out, is rather flimsy, is made of cheap plastic and only holds about 100pgs. However, it''s not as flimsy as some units such as Epson''s Artisan 800, and a number of other units. More importantly though, I''ve had no paper jams and the pages don''t drop on the floor after printing.

This unit like a number of Brother units, also supposedly uses it own ink to periodically clean itself. You cant shut this off, so even if not using the printer, you will find your ink is being lowered. You only have to replace one cartridge at a time though.

The real flaw with the unit is actually its biggest marketing feature, the fact that it has a built in 30 min answering machine and an attached cordless phone. I use my phone and fax on the same line and was tired of having my answering machine conflict with the fax. By having them in the same unit I hoped to avoid this conflict and guess what? It did. The machine knew when to pick up for messages or fax. No more conflict. Coodles to Brother for being the only manufacturer to offer a built in answering machine and cordless phone in some of their all in one units. Unfortunately, Brother apparently chose to use cheap mics or speakers for its built in phone system. So much to my disappointment, the answering machine messages come out garbled. Not all the time, but about half the time. Why bother to include an answering machine if you are going to do such an unacceptable job? I use my answering machine a lot and I don''t want to have to guess what the message is saying. I tried just turning on my old answering machine, and turning off Brothers, but its fax then continues to try and pick up during calls. So I have to unplug the phone cord from the Brother, which means you cant use the cordless phone.

The cordless phone looks and feels nice, has raised buttons (though not backlit) and a decent orange backlit lcd screen and caller ID. Unfortunately the cordless phone also has speaker and or mic problems. Sometimes I can hear my echo while talking, and sometimes other people complained of static noise on the other end.

I sent my first one back, and ordered another one from a different place thinking maybe I got a lemon, but its has the same problems. Brother''s customer service line was of no help at all. So now I''m torn, the unit looks nice, prints text fast and well, and faxes text quickly. Those are the main things I use it for, so I''ve thought about keeping it despite its major flaws. However I don''t like the idea of keeping a brand new unit that comes with one of its major features being defective. Every unit on the market seems to have some types of flaws or problems, so I''m not sure where to settle.

UPDATE 9/5/2009I decided to keep the unit, and for the most part I am content with it. I would probably raise the the star rating to 3 or 4, despite the problems I mentioned. I managed to change the settings so that the fax doesn''t always try to pick up and only does so now when I actually get a fax. I rarely use the cordless phone due to its speaker problems, and I keep the answering machine off.

The USB port displays the pics from my flash drive on the LCD screen, but takes awhile to load them, and they are difficult to scroll through to find the ones you want.

I still haven''t tried the wireless and probably won''t since it''s hooked to my computer. The paper tray needs to be a little bit bigger, as I find I have to refill it a little too often. Also be warned, this machine really burns through ink with it''s automated cleaning process. I''ve had to replace the black ink a few times already and the color inks are all half empty despite the fact I almost never print anything in color. I do think the text print quality was slightly better on my old HP, but it''s not a major difference. The scanner door feels like it isn''t properly attached, like it''s going to come off, but I beleive this is so you can lay bulky items on the scanner bed and still lay the door somewhat flat.

Overall I like the design of the unit and it has performed well with black & white printing and faxing, which are my primary uses for it.

Absolutely frustrating. Its been anything but a hassle-free setup from the moment it was removed from the box:

1) It has flimsy parts. The paper tray has lots of internal parts you move around, the hinges of which will bend or snap easily without much effort. The scanner lid is bizarrely loose, acting like it would lift completely off, but it doesn''t, resulting in an opening that isn''t smooth but rather clunky. There is no manual feed area, so anything like envelopes or labels you will need to load directly into the main paper area real pain.

2) Printing quality is just OK. Perhaps good enough for general document printing, but certainly not for images. You have to really crank up the settings to get anything but washed out colors even then, not a deep as desired. Very disappointing. Speed is quick enough, loud however.

3) Scanning is decent enough for documents (just not great for pictures you''re trying to convert to high quality scans) but has some behavior you have to get used to. If scanning from the bed and not the sheet feeder, you can''t select the area to scan, instead it scans the whole region and you have to crop later. When scanning from the sheet feeder with items thinner than 8.5 inch, the end scan always has the document correct on one side, but lots of blank space on the other, as though it only cropped part of it.

4) There is external media (USB Keychain, SD, CF, etc.) slots in the front, but the USB slot is recessed making it impossible to use any keychain drive that has a bulky body. If you plug in an external media (USB Keychain, SD, CF, etc.), the printer dedicates itself to scanning it for pictures. If you have a large capacity media with lots of files that are not media, you can have quite a wait.

5) If you use the phone, you can''t scan or copy. It tells you line in use, and you need to either unplug it from the phone line, or wait until you''re off the call.

6) In Windows Vista with the printer attached to the network wirelessly, I''ve had the OS tell me the printer is offline, while the local printer software tells me it''s online, requiring a reboot or two of Vista to get printing capabilities back.

On the plus side, the touch-display is nice and easy to use, the devices looks nice, has a small enough footprint, and does do a decent enough AIO job that it isn''t the worst purchase I''ve ever made, but my next one won''t be a Brother. As a parting comment, their tech support is friendly, which is good as you will be calling them.

I don''t really print all that much, so I haven''t really "put it through its paces", but can say it was very easy to set up. I still haven''t really got the fax part set up. The instructions indicate there could be confilcts between the fax function and voice mail, which turned out to be true in my case, and I still haven''t wanted to get back to it. Every all in one I''ve ever had (HP, Canon Pixma)was a hassle to get phones, faxes and voice mail all on the same page. My only disappointment was with the cordless telephone that comes with the machine. I had hoped that having it''s own phone might eliminate that problem, but it didn''t. I then ordered two more handsets, thinking the mix of the Brother machine and older Panasonic phones might be the problem. I never got around to fine-tuning the fax vs. voice mail with the new handsets because they are pretty cheesy and I just didn''t like them. For example, the display is tiny, does not let you know when you''ve missed a call, and most annoying, you have to do phonebook entries separately on each handset. That got real old real fast, so I returned the Brother handsets and went back to my old phones. The other features of the machine, such as the touchscreen menu screen, ease of wireless network set up, Bluetooth, and ease of use, accessibility of the print cartridges et. outweigh that one issue, and I would buy it again.

DO NOT BUY BROTHER PRINTERS! We bought it mainly for the wireless feature. Less than 3 months after we bought this printer, it stopped working. It will not print in ''black'', only colors. Tried cleaning it as per the instructions but this did not help. Even bought as new black ink cartridge. Found out that the problem is quite common, complaints on this are all over the internet. Called customer support and it was a joke. They asked us to clean it again twice, then perform a deep cleaning procedure. Nothing worked. Their only objective is to find a excuse for you not to return the printer. I have called them 4 times so far, more than 2 hours on the phone for a $200 printer. On my last attempt the rep refused to process the return request unless I faxed them my receipt while I was talking to her!!! I am really disappointed by Brother product quality, but mostly by their incompetent customer service. My old Canon i860 photo printer still works after 8 years.

This printer is probably the most economical to print, rated at ~1.2 cent/ page when using their high capacity 10k cartridge. I felt that it also prints very fast, and I assume that''s because it uses LED arrays rather than laser. The resolution, although claimed to be 1200x1200, is probably not as good as regular laser printer with similar specs. This is most apparent if the documents involve any kind of graphic and/or if the electronic version of your document has any color other than black and white. On the other hand, if you only want to print documents that are black and white text, this printer is perfect.

We have had our MFC-8640 for about four years and was prompted to write a review after the "wiz kid" helped me fix the toner sensor fault. Ours has worked more or less perfectly since we bought it and I recently put it on a print server, purchased separately, that facilitates use throughout the home network. It does "blink" the lights a bit when starting up, but I keep it in sleep mode most of the time so it''s really not an annoyance. 33K Fax is faster than some of the newer models. The alternate paper feed is a mystery, and we don''t print envelopes. Occasionally we print labels using the tray. Scanner does well, even copying color to B/W. And as mentioned the duplexer is great.

BTW the toner sensor "eye" is on the wall of the toner/roller cavity on the right side; it is a little lens recessed in the black plastic 3 or 4 inches from the front. Fixyourprinter dot com & Black tape fixed mine. Saved me Hundred$$. Buy the toner from Amazon.

I have owned this printer for well over 5+ years and use it on a regular basis in my home office. I purchased the separate network card but I never installed it because I was able to plug it in to my home network through my NAS. Now all the computers I have connected to my home network can use the printer (provided the print drivers have been installed). If you don''t have a NAS at home which most people don''t, you should be able to plug it right into your wireless router, provided it has a USB port.

I am one of those people who need to print out things to review on actual paper rather than on a screen. This means I go through a lot of paper. The document feeder is something I use often because I reuse paper by printing on both sides. The document feeder has also been helpful when I print shipping labels on sticky paper or directly on envelopes.

The scanner is another feature I use a lot. You can use either the flatbed or the handy feeder. It comes with Control Center software which I have used to control how the scanned docs should look, how it is saved amd where it should go. I have found that the same things can be accomplished with Adobe Acrobat or micrsoft scanning setup which is standard for most PCs running XP and later. The fax works great, but I don''t use it too often so I''m not familiar with all the bells and whistles I know it''s capable of.

Now here is perhaps the most important aspect and why I give it such a high rating:

TONER! TONER! TONER!

The toner is easy to find and each cartridge prints anywhere from 1500 5000 pages, depending on which cartridge is selected. My cartridges lasts even longer because I have my default print setting on draft mode which still comes out dark enough to fit 95% of my printing needs. The cost per page is super low when you compare it to others such as HP, cannon, Epson, etc.

I''ve had this all in one printer/copier/scanner for 5 years now and it still works great. It has been very reliable and I experienced paper jams only twice. For use with my Mac, the scanner feature works via software controls and not the on-machine buttons.

My only complaint is the original original on board memory of 16MB was woefully inadequate. It would take forever to print, and then it was one page at a time instead of the 21ppm. I eventually upgraded the memory by adding a 128MB module. After that it printed fine. Newer models are essentially similar, with just a few upgrades like 32MB memory and 30ppm.

These are the only foldable greeting card sheets I''ve seen on Amazon that are scored. If you care enough to send not necessarily the very best but something that looks reasonably professional, these may be the only choice. (Look carefully in the description for some reference to the paper being scored.) Also, after comparing the results achieved with these and those printed on textured Avery''s (at more than half the price), I''m all the more impressed by Hallmark paper. (5 stars if you can get a box for under $15 and avoid postage.)

The cards are flimsy, not thick paper and have a poor print surface. Almost like printing on plain paper.

The envelopes are thin, pretty much bottom of the barrel.

Software (a ''trial version'') only works on PC, MAC users need not apply.

You get a fancy package with cheap product inside Hallmark has a lot of nerve calling this ''Premium Blank'' and ''High Quality'', unless they are describing the box it comes in.

If you are trying to make first rate greeting cards, this is not your solution.

I spent my entire career in the graphic arts, so I know paper.

We run a land surveying company on the rainy Oregon coast. This paper allow us to print maps from either inkjet or laser printers and take it into the field no matter what the conditions. No more soggy, muddy copies.

I purchased the paper for use in geocaches, don''t know about geocaching? Google it! The log sheets in caches are handled by many , folded and refolded and often exposed to the elements. I use a Canon Pixma 4000 inkjet imprinter with genuine Canon ink to print a full color log sheet. After some experimentation I have found the paper to be very tough. It is thicker than normal paper, and much more durable, it won''t tear, which is perfect. The problem is with the ink absorption. The ink doesn''t get absorbed completely. I''ve tried different settings, allowing the paper to rest after printing, for hours, all with the same results...ink all over my hands.

Fine images also don''t print with good resolution either, with the ink "pooling" and bleeding fine elements of graphics together.

I am going to try different ink jet printer to see if I can get better results. I am disappointed in the performance thus far. I will update if results change.

This paper worked very well for me. I have printed maps and satellite photos of hiking trails on this paper using my inkjet printer. The images look great. Out of curiosity, I tested its weatherproof-ness by running it under the faucet. The only way I could get a little ink to run was if I heavily rubbed an area with my thumb while under running water. But even then, the image didn''t smear because the loosened ink didn''t re-adhere to the paper. This paper is also very strong and resists tearing. If you try to rip it like normal paper, it will only stretch a bit. Folds easily.

I just got through testing this paper for use creating topo/hiking trail maps with a very inexpensive Canon Pixma IP 2600 inkjet printer. The cartridges used were OEM Canon PG-40 and CL-41 (not refilled). Print results are good and durability outstanding. I didn''t have ink absorption problems that were reported by another Canon user whose printer uses different Canon cartridges.

After printing my first test map, I placed it under the faucet and ran water over it then rubbed it dry using a dish towel. It still looked good so I went onto an abrasion test. I scrubbed it with a wet Scotch Brite green. No problem! At lunch time I started my counter cover test by smearing peanut butter and grape jelly over it when making a sandwich. After washing the map with my dishes in detergent, it was good as new.

Evening time it became my cutting board when I cut meat and vegetables for a stir fry. Washed with the dishes again and the map looks fine. This mornings test did it in. Although I was able start the fire in my wood stove with the 8 1/2 by 11 map, I can no longer read it.

I use this paper primarily to (1) print out trail maps for hiking trips and (2) make log pages for geocaches that I place. This paper has worked perfectly for both uses. Seriously, the text output is fantastic. I''m back in college and have had to print out over 1000 pages of PDF''s for my classes this quarter. My workhorse 4-yr old Canon i860 printer was fast and could use cheap non-OEM inks but it often made for very hard reading which wasn''t worthwhile. This quality of the MP470''s text on plain paper rivals that of the HP 5000-series Laserjets at work.

I seem to average a little over 220 pages of text (which includes images) from the CL40 black ink cartridge. That''s nearly 9¢ per page, which is not spectacular. For general use I prefer printers which use two cartridges (one black, the other tricolor) as opposed to 4,5, or 6+. It may cost a little more but it''s so much easier to keep track of spare cartridges you will inevitably have to keep on hand.

The LCD is easy to read and the media card slots are handy but as someone who uses Photoshop to at least sharpen the images I print, the card slots aren''t used much at all.

The scanner is OK, not great but not bad. Documents scan and print clearly, photo''s are OK. I have a Canoscan 8400 and it''s much faster and accurate but it cost twice as much as the MP470. I think for school and household use, the scanner is fine. For serious photo scanning, a dedicated scanner will be much better.

My one criticism of this printer is the noise. Not as loud as dot-matrix but it''s louder than any printer I''ve used, including the MP160 (which my partner uses for her work). There is a quiet mode with a timer, so you can make the printer quieter (and slower) during certain hours of the day.

I have a certain disdain for all inkjet printer manufacturers for adopting the "Gillette" model; sell the product near cost and earn the profit on the consumables. Not only is this deceptive model for the purchaser of a printer but I think it encourages waste by making many printers ''disposable'' compared to the cost of ink. My 2¢... Having said that, Canon seems to be the best of the bunch right now. Due to their design, Epson has head-clogging issues and higher per-page output cost. HP has very lightfast ink but their non-business models always have paper handling issues. Lexmark is undistinguished (and Dell inkjets are just Lexmark printers that have no Mac compatibility).

This is an excellent printer for those of you who will only use it occasionally. It has fast printing & the print quality is excellent. If you plan to scan only once in a while this will do the job. If you are a heavy scan feature user look for a printer more specific for that. I use this to print directions, some pictures, boarding passes & to make scanned PDF documents. It has worked great for my needs. If you are a heavy duty printer user I would suggest one of the higher end Pixma models.

After reading the rave review in one of the leading computer magazines I was anxious to try the MP470. The magazine raved about the outstanding scan results attained by this equipment. Since my primary need was to scan photographs this sounded like the one for me. The MP470 is an excellent printer and produces great results, but its scanning capability is not good. Perhaps my unit was flawed since the results I obtained were poor. I tried various adjustment to improve the clarity but to no avail. I have returned the unit to Amazon and purchased another brand.

I don''t have much to add to what others have said about this printer. It truly isn''t as good as a $400 unit, but remember it costs under a hundred bucks, and for that price it is a Very good printer. A few things to watch out for, though. First, in common with a number of other Canon consumer printers, the paper feed is not very good. Specifically, there is no tray. You mount the paper almost vertically in the back, where it is held up by a retractable support. The feed is combination of gravity and internal mechanism. Mounting of the paper is critical, or it will feed slightly at an angle which will be noticeable on your output. Certainly not a show-stopper, but just keep in mind you need to be precise in how you put the paper in. Second, you are guaranteed to break that support I mentioned if you aren''t particularly careful. The paper still feeds OK if you do, but then paper mounting is even more critical and you may have to load less sheets at when you refill. Finally, it takes the printer a while to get itself ready, especially if it was powered up recently. Once it gets going it''s plenty fast, but it isn''t uncommon for that first page to take 15 seconds to come out, and I have actually seen it take almost 60 seconds to start after the job is sent (all were B&W, short text only), which can be annoying on short documents. Once it gets going, though, print quality is outstanding for the price.

UPDATE:

In the above review I talked about the sensitivity of the paper feed and that support in the back that can break quickly. After having used the printer for five months, the output quality remains excellent. However, the paper feed has become a bit more sensitive (and the support did break), so while it''s still a good printer, the annoyance factor is up a bit. Also, still unable to figure out why sometimes it prints instantly and sometimes you have to wait 25 seconds for the first page to start (even same document on different days). While I''m not so upset that I would dump the unit, this does wear on you at times, so be aware. Still, it''s only 90 bucks...

Okay, so I had 2 all-in-ones, both HP''s, in the past. Both of them lost their ability to scan and copy, so the all-in-one became a one-in-one. HP''s customer service dept. claimed that they had corrected the problem on their newer products, but wouldn''t/couldn''t refund or exchange these 2 broken ones. I hesitated on the Canon for that reason, but after seeing the reviews and witnessing what it could do, I have to admit that I am IMPRESSED!

The first thing I printed was a color photo from a file on regular paper, regular quality and it is sharp, yet the colors are beautiful and it was instantly dry a perk for the home user! The second thing I printed was a scanned black and white photo (at an impressive 1200 dpi) on glossy Kodak photo paper and it looks like the professional photo I scanned! I was able to make wallets from a 5x7 and no one would ever detect that I did it from home.

I did print some black text on regular paper and the quality is just about laser.

I am SOLD! I highly recommend this for your photos, flyers, invites or anything that you print from home and people will think you had them professionally copied.

The style of the machine is sophisticated and sharp and the BEST THING IS there are no buttons for my 2 year old to push!!! Until he finds the door for the LED, but that hasn''t happened just yet. ;)

I used this in my Epson 9900 as an alternative to the Doubleweight Matte because at the time of purchase presentation matte was cheaper then doubleweight. The two papers are not distinguishably different. Prints still come out great, however, the presentation matte rolled much more post-print then doubleweight matte does. Good quality paper, but I''d pick out the Epson Doublewight Matte over the Presentation Matte any day, even if the doubleweight cost more.
