I purchased this old style printer because it matches equipment that I already have. It seems to work OK. It did not come with a power cord though, which I thought was odd. I should be able to find one at Radio Shack.

I was skeptical but I needed ink.

I hadn''t used my printer in "a while" and though I had a bit of ink left, the poor thing hadn''t been used in a while so I had to do some nozzle cleaning and burned through what little I had or hadn''t evaporated away. Since the printer had been sitting I figured I''d try this ink instead of spending the $100 for Epson ink. The Light Magenta at first gave me an error that it wasn''t the right ink but I released the ink cartridge and pushed it back down (not removing it) low and behold that worked.

After several prints using photo, gloss, regular paper, and various images from small to large everything looked just like what I had done before. I''m not an image snob by far, I like to take my pictures and other images then frame them nothing special. So far, not a problem, the printer has no issues and register all full.

I''m actually thinking I should buy another set just so I have more ink around later.

Described as Epson ink, but this is NOT Epson ink. My printer would not work with it. Returned. Epic fail.

Under-Desk Printer/Fax Stand Save 39% off

Safco Under-Desk Printer/Fax StandWorks fine, fits under desk well, rolls well, has paper storage shelf. Fits my large multifunction printer well. Setup directions not as clear as they could be. A good value overall.

It''s a short cart on wheels. It''s plenty sturdy to hold an average multifunction printer plus paper products on the lower shelf. It''s probably sturdy enough to hold a computer instead, if that''s what you want.

Wausau Astroparche 24 , , Fine Business Stationery, 100 Count, Natural, 8.5 X 11 Inches
  • Acid and lingin free for great quality that doesn''t deteriorate
  • Inkjet, laser, copier and offset guaranteed
  • Papers with a professional look
  • The paper is made with 30 percent recycled post-consumer fiber
  • 100 Sheets

We had had problems printing certificates with the card stock version of this Wasau Natural Astroparche on our HP LaserJet printer. Flecks of ink would appear on the card stock. The HP manual said this was symptomatic of rough surfaced paper. Indeed, the card stock felt a little rough.

We tried this letter paper instead of card stock. It felt smoother. We found no flecks of ink on this letter paper. It works great!

Sure, it is nicer to give a certificate with a little more class than a flimsy piece of paper. Card stock would do that (but not with flecks of ink on it). Our solution was to buy some decent black plastic frames at the Dollar Store and stick the fine Wasau Astroparche certificates in them. It is actually much more impressive that way than the card stock, and still within budget.

Brother DS-600 DSMobile Scanner Save 34% off

Brother DS-600 DSMobile Scanner - Retail Packaging
  • Ships in Certified Frustration-Free Packaging
  • Small, compact design: Measuring 1.5" in height, 2.0" in depth, 11" in length weighing only 12.2oz.
  • The DSmobile 600 provides the versatility to scan media from business card size to 8.5 x 14" paper size.
  • The unique USB power/data interface draws power directly from the PC and comes with a detachable USB cable.
  • The DSmobile 600 connects to a high-speed USB 2.0 interface yet only consumes only 0.2W of power when in standby mode

The DS-600 scanner is a super light-weight scanner that barely takes up any room on your desk. I admit that when I opened up the box and saw this scanner, I didn''t expect it to work all that well it seemed too small and too light to do a good job. However I was pleasantly surprised.

Although it''s tempting to connect everything at once, there is a warning that you must install the driver and scanner software before connecting everything. The CD-ROM offers the install in several languages and it is very easy (and quick) to install everything needed.

I scanned several documents of various sizes a one page black and white document in a very small font, a take-out menu, a business card, some pages in bright colors with lots of contrast, and several photos. All documents scanned perfectly the small fonts of one document were clear and scanned to match exactly the existing document. For the color documents the one document with bright colors and high contrast and the photo (with faded colors) were identical to the original documents. Note that you can''t modify the documents (for example, some scanners provide options to tweak photos that''s not available here.)

You can save documents in PDF, JPG and TIFF format. File names and locations are easy to change. You can save documents in these sizes: letter, legal, A4, B5, A5, A6 and Business Card. There are options and settings that you can customize, but you don''t need to it works perfectly straight out of the box.

Documentation (besides the piece of paper that warns you to install the product before plugging in the scanner) consists of a ~50 page User Guide in PDF format that''s on the CD-ROM. I''d say "User Guide" is a misnomer as while it does a good job describing how to install (for Windows and Mac systems) the scanner driver, Dsmobile scanner, and PageManager, it barely describes how to "use" the scanner (besides connecting it, calibrating, and clicking the desktop icon). The DSmobile scanner comes with two 4x6 sleeves which besides telling that you should clean them, are never described (I''m assuming you should use them to scan photos as that''s how I used them). The scanner''s options and ability to customize also aren''t documented. Luckily the product is easy to use.

The CD-ROM also lets you install PageManager vsn 7.x which you can use to view, organize, edit, and send your digital files. I didn''t play too much with PageManager, but it appears easy to use.

With a carrying case included, this is one scanner that you can easily take with you. If you want a scanner that doesn''t take up a lot of room and does exactly what it should, check out the DS-600.

I have bought three of these for my business, to scan documents from the road and send them in to clients. I only use black and white at 300dpi, which creates a very small file but a very clear image for documents. This scanner does the job well, and none of my three scanners has broken down yet, after 6 months of light use. There are several drawbacks:

1) Almost every page gets scanned in a little crooked. I''m thinking that there is a knack to getting it to go through perfectly straight but I haven''t figured it out yet, one of my employees does pretty well though. Anyway, it is good enough, but still annoying

2) The whole process is tedious with multiple pages, hand-feeding one at a time, going through the program to tell it to scan each page. I shouldn''t complain because this is a portable scanner, but one day maybe someone can make a portable scanner that can handle multiple pages by itself.

3) Occasionally it has trouble identifying that a piece of paper has been put into the scanner. The easiest solution for me has been to unplug the USB connection, plug it in again and try again.

4) You can only scan individual sheets, you can''t scan out of books, newspapers, etc., like the HP Capshare 920. (The Capshare is unique in that it was made in the 1990''s and is still better than anything on the market today. Unfortunately they stopped making it, you have to find it on Ebay.)

Everything else is great, it gets its power from the USB connection and does its job.

Update 2/24/2011: It has now been a year, and all three scanners are still running strong, no problems. Problem #3 that I mentioned above has ceased to be a problem, I think I was somehow putting the paper in wrong. You have to slide the paper in far enough to trip a tiny switch, and then allow the scanner to automatically pull the paper in about an inch before you start the scan.

I''ve used this scanner to scan documents for work, as well as pictures and drawings. I thought it worked fine for scanning documents into Adobe Pro. I didn''t have any problems running OCR after scanning my paperwork. For images and drawings, I am unimpressed.

Even at 600 dpi the scans were unclear, with lost information. One drawing I scanned just looked like chicken scratch because the scanner couldn''t read the finer lines. It also doesn''t have anything to guide your document through the scanner. I would have been easy to include a small guide bar that swings out from the document feeder area. Without the guide it is difficult to feed documents through straight.

Another issue I had with it is that it doesn''t know when it is not scanning something. For instance, if a document isn''t far enough in to be caught by the feeder, the scanner will still scan even though there is nothing feeding through. If you are in a hurry, this is a huge waste of time.

Overall, I think this is an average mobile scanner. It is fine for documents, if you have nothing else available, but I wouldn''t want to use it on a regular basis.

Brother''s DSMobile Scanner produces great results as a scanner, to take on the go with your laptop. It doesnt plug in, but draws power from the laptop, like when you load up your MP3 player. It''s small, about ten inches long, and 2-3inches wide, and comes with a leatherette drawstring carrying case, that also holds the USB/ scanner cord. Along with the scanner, cord and pouch, comes all the software you need, plus a bunch of more common software, which you MIGHT need, and not have. (for example, you can download a trial version of MICROSOFT WORD, and also a free copy of PFD document expansion software.) The whole Scanner kit can have you up and running, within minutes of pulling it out of the box for the first time. You just have to download the scanner software, before you scan your first document. The scans look beautiful. The only problem I had was the first scan i made of some medical document, because I fed the paper into the scanner a bit off sides, so the image came out slightly lopsided. Scans after that, which included color artwork, black and white drawings, and greyscale drawings, all came thru without a hitch.

There is a small downside, with this scanner, and no doubt it''s obvious. With the large desktop scanners, if you want to scan something out of a book, a magazine, or artwork from a sketchbook, etc, you can lay it flat on your scanner, and it can scan the art or book pages without problem. The DSMobile Scanner however, can only scan SINGLE PIECES of paper. For most of the use a portable scanner like this might encounter, that wont be a problem. These portable scanners were made for scanning almost anything.....exam papers, medical or legal documents that may not leave an office, photos at a friends house who doesnt have digital technology, and pages at a reference library. For the same reason a laptop works well as the portable version of a desktop computer, this scanning stick works as a portible version of the large, heavy desktop printer scanners. The software for scanning was designed for ease of use, by anyone at all conversant with computers. Before you scan, the software asks you the size of the paper, if you want to scan in color, B&W, or greytones, and that''s everything. The other software allows you to keep your documents organized, for example, medical documents in one folder, artwork in another folder, or your credit card bills in another folder. Overall, I find that it scans a little faster than my desktop printer/scanner. Almost anyone with a laptop, will get a lot of use out of this device.

The Brother Dsmobile 600 is an excellent, high quality product that has no negatives associated with it since I''ve been using it. Its benefits are numerous: very fast and easy to install, so light and compact that it fits conveniently in virtually any carrying case, is powered by a USB connection, easily creates PDF & JPEG files, provides an auto-start option as you feed multiple pages, comes with its own carrying case and a 6-ft cable, and, most importantly, provides very high quality color scanning of a variety of types of documents and photos up to 8 1/2" X 14". Very highly recommended.

I needed to replace my ancient HP 970CSE printer which was marginal for years, esp. on any picture printing.

Went to Best Buy, and walked out with this for $99 it seemed to have enough capability for my occasional use requirements, without being too big and bulky...I did not need a document feeder or fax, for example...but the ability to fool around with photos seemed like fun. 4 years of warranty was an additional $40.

I was initially put off by the "Photosmart" title, as opposed to the utilitarian-sounding "Deskjet" I was replacing. In fact, I was considering a Deskjet 3520 with its monochrome display, but the store guy [it took me talking to two people to get enough information] convinced me that this was a better unit. It used the #564 cartridges, which were a lot more economical, at $10/ea. than the #78 cartridge for the old 970. OK, there were now 4 ink cartridges, but I don''t see using that much colored ink, just mainly black.

Brought the printer home, hooked it up, and it ran flawlessly! Did 120 sheets of black [mostly]/red/blue printing, and the ink status gauges barely moved. This printer just spits out the sheets in draft mode...really fast!

Tried a photo from the internet on plain paper, and it was great. Using the 4 x 6 sample pack of photo paper that came with the printer, I printed a photo from the hard disc of the PC that was outstanding. The camera mamory slot on the printer will not take my XD memory card, but I can load them into the PC, as I have been doing. This stuff would use up the colored inks, I know, if I make a habit of it.

The printer will give a status report if asked, and even print out a sudoku puzzle, or calendar, or even notepaper/ graphpaper. The copying feature is new to me, and will prove useful...it will even do a decent job duplicating old photos, either on plain paper, or photo paper. Not bad for no "photo black" capability.

All in all, it fits my needs perfectly, and works very well.

In all fairness I did not purchase this item through Amazon, but directly from HP. The unit I received did not print anything correctly... all documents were reproduced somewhat askew and I am not sure if it was due to the paper not feeding properly or due to some other issue. However, the same misalignment problems occurred with all types of paper used. The unit was replaced by HP and unfortunately the second unit made a God-awful scraping noise upon setup which resulted in the cartridges jamming which in turn caused the unit to be inoperable. A third unit was subsequently dispatched and that machine reacted exactly like the first device. I then requested and received a refund from HP. So... as the saying goes... three strikes and you''re out!

I hope this review serves as a forewarning to any prospective buyers... I certainly wasted quite a bit of time trying to resolve the various issues that I had with this contraption. So you have been duly warned. Caveat emptor as the saying goes!

HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One Printer

This is not a quality printer. The wireless feature is great but like all other reviews, this has a terrible problem with paper jams and not loading paper. I have only owned about a month and now have tried to search three days for a solution of this only loading paper half way, acting as if it is printing and then giving you a paper jam message. Bought 8 dollar premium HP paper but didn''t work. Went through all the HP solutions to no avail. Finally flipped it over and got out the flash light. Well guess what, something did not look right:

Turn over the printer to view the bottom side

Remove the paper tray

Look to the left side and you will see a big black gear

You should see a white gear that turns it

MY WHITE GEAR HAD POPPED TO THE SIDE OF IT AND WAS NOT TURNING THE BLACK GEAR

It seemed to be spring loaded so I GENTLY pushed the white gear back to where it was operating the black gear.

Works perfect.

Hope this might help anyone else who cannot get this thing to load a piece of paper

Set up for the HP 5520 was very easy. Printed one page documents from my home network and iphones. Started to print a 17 page document and the printer jammed. I cleared the jam as directed from the website but the printer hasn''t worked since. The paper keeps jamming even though there are no obstructions.

Overall, I like this printer. It prints good quality and fast. It is setup easily. Now I can print from any device at home with the wireless printing. I can even print from my iPad.

From my experience, the only drawback of this printer is the paper loader. It gets jammed sometimes most likely when there is only one paper on the loader. So be careful with that. Try to put a few pages even you are only printing one paper.

HP Two-Sided Duplexer Printing Accessory for HP Inkjet Printers C8955AA2L

HP Two-Sided Duplexer Printing Accessory for HP Inkjet Printers C8955AA2L

  • Compatible with a wide range of HP printers
  • Paper capacity up to 100 sheets or 20 cards
  • 8.5-by-11-in maximum paper input size
  • 1-year parts and labor warranty

Attached it to a HP 7150 and it works wonderfully. Extremely easy to install. Contruction is very similar to that of the printer. There seems to be a longer than usual pause to let the ink dry before the printer flips the page over and prints on the reverse side.

The price is steep, but as would be expected for a HP accessory. If you do a lot of two sided printing, this accessory is a major convenience.

I bought this for an HP 5850 a while back and just purchased an Officejet 7210, which to my delight, it also fits. I love this item. It does take a bit for the ink to dry, but not an unreasonable amount of time. I bought mine for far less than the retail price, but even at retail, it''s worth the money.

I have always purchased HP''s for myself and my company, and always had two sided print. However, when I purchased a second HP for myself, I thought that feature was included in the system. But, surprisingly, it did not, and I learned that HP markets this feature separately for about $80. The reason I like the duplexer is because it does save paper, great for greeting cards, easy to install, and allows card stock. However, it will not support support 8 1/2" x 11" photo paper (Big Time Jams). Its support center puts you through a number of ineffective steps, but in truth there is no way to solve that problem. The duplexer sticks out 2 1/2" in the back of the printer.

Want HP Two-Sided Duplexer Printing Accessory for HP Inkjet Printers C8955AA2L Discount?

It does what is says it will do. Works excellent it might take a little time to start printing on the other side, but it prints good.

I bought it 4 years ago for HP PSC 2510 and I have not had a single problem with it. You can open its back door without detaching it for printing through or paper jam (though never happened). It is a bit bigger and make impression of better solid quality than contemporary duplex models of thinner plastic. If you still use a compatible printer, it is highly recommended, especially as it is so really cheap now.

Brother HL-4040cdn Color Laser Printer with Duplex and Networking

Brother HL-4040cdn Color Laser Printer with Duplex and Networking
  • Up to 21ppm color and monochrome printing
  • Built-in duplex printing
  • Up to 2400 x 600 dpi resolution
  • Print directly from a USB flash memory drive or PictBridge-enabled camera
  • High capacity replacement toner cartridges

This printer will tell you when you are out of toners and need new ones. And when you are out with just one of the color toner, this printer will not allow you to print anything until you replace it with the new toner.

So here is how to override these problem, and you decide when the toner needs to be changed... and not the printer.

1. Slide out the toner trays and put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensors on each color toner. This will make the print think that it has full toner.

2. If you already see "Replace Toner" messages, just RESET it by opening the front COVER and pressing CANCEL and REPRINT together. Scroll up and down to reset desired toner.

3. If you think you have more life and juice left on its drum and laser parts, just reset it and forget it! Open the COVER, and hold down GO and hit UP (+) button. Scroll through the menu to select and reset!!!!

After the "replace toner" message, I reset the counter, and I have printed over 2000 more pages on a same cartridge. But be aware! You will start to see some "sprinkles of toners" on your pages as they are way over used.

I researched and found that cartridges for this machine are a lot cheaper than those for HP''s and the toner that comes with the printer has a page yield of 1500 color and 2500 b&w. The Hp''s came with toner that had only 750 page yield then you had to pay approx $140 for the toner cartridges for replacement when with this one you can purchase toner cartridges for right around $70 which is half the price with more page yield. So far I have printed 450 pages on the starter cartridges and the toner amount has not lowered and the print quality is excellent!

I purchased the Brother HL-4040CDN in June 09, after reading all the reviews I could find. Some people mentioned a problem printing envelopes but I thought that was just a random problem;but soon found that every envelope I printed was creased and wrinkled. I tried every Printer Properties option envelope type, paper type, thicker paper, etc. I researched all the Brother website troubleshooting help for printer, paper feeding and envelope issues, and tried it all. Nothing worked. Then, I went to Solution Center, FAQs: "envelopes wrinkle and crease" I found this one thing that helped tremendously. Very insignificantly listed as the last option: Open the back door of the printer and move the Envelope levers down, these are two grey levers next to the green levers on the fuser unit. Make sure to leave the grey levers down for envelope printing only. When done printing envelopes return the grey lever to the original position or UP position for use with regular paper.

It is very inconvenient to open the back door and move the grey levers every time I need to print an envelope, so I have found that leaving the grey levers down has not caused a problem printing on paper.

Hope this helps someone. It sure helped me, and would have saved me lots of time and envelopes.

Want Brother HL-4040cdn Color Laser Printer with Duplex and Networking Discount?

first, everybody else is right: great solid construction, prints fast after initial warm up, toner cartridge price is reasonable. The initial cartridges that come with it seem to be lasting OK. Price is right.

I''m just going to list some downsides here:

1)plan are doing an setup of about a half hour to 45 minutes, it involves a lot of unpacking, inserting components, and removing shipping pins and installing software. No big deal there.

2)the colors printed are not going to be exactly what you envisioned, a graphic of a nice red stop sign is going to more of a pastel, maybe even purplish, a green will be muddy, the only primary color that will be close is yellow. I know this is a product of CMYK printing, but keep this is mind if you''re doing brochures.

3)pages have a heavy curl to them after printing. Not really a problem with standard paper, but if you''re using card stock (like I use for door hangers), you have to go to the effort of trying to uncurl them before reinserting them back in the tray to print the other side, otherwise you''re looking at a paper jam. This wasn''t an issue with my older b/w laser, so I was totally surprised by this.

again: great printer, good price (although I bought it from amazon at $275 and now it''s at $359, not sure what happened there) just be aware of the issues I had

I needed a laser printer to create DVD album covers, which often includes graphics and high quality photos. Overall this was a great printer but it didn''t have the print quality I needed. It was easy to set up on my Mac and relatively quick to print something. My main problem with this printer was the print quality for pictures. I ended up taking the Brother 4040cdn back and getting a HP CP2025. The HP CP2025 isn''t as fast as the Brother 404cdn but the print quality blows it away.

Also, the Brother 4040cdn created pressed lines into my presentation paper from the rollers used to pull the paper through the printer, also something that I couldn''t accept. Regular printer paper seemed to be come through with no lines.

This paper provides a nice mid-weight feel along with good color saturation and retention. It also has a nice surface both in terms of texture and light reflection. Good product.

Lexmark X4650 Multifunction Printer (16F1400)

Lexmark X4650 Multifunction Printer
  • Wireless 802.11b/g built in
  • Flatbed scanner
  • Print brilliant, borderless photos
  • 1-touch copy and scan photo feature without a PC
  • Up to 25 black or up to 18 color printed pages per minute

I bought this printer to replace an old HP printer that was giving me headaches.

I couldn''t be happier; the setup program is the greatest installation wizard I''ve seen in a while for a printer: It takes you step by step, with crisp and clear illustrations, through the whole process of unpacking the printer, installing the cartridges and getting the wireless working.

I was especially concerned about the wireless, the installation process had to deal with my Windows Vista, my router, my network security settings, my antivirus and my firewall ... I was expecting some trouble but it just worked seamlessly.

I was so happy I even registered the printer with Lexmark, which apparently gives you ink discounts.

Printing quality is great so far but I''ve only printed business documents, I''ll update this review after I print some pictures.

PRO: Very easy to set up wireless. It goes to sleep (which I presume conserves energy) and quickly reconnects to the wireless network when woken up, which doesn''t even require pressing the power button, just printing to it will wake it up. I also love that this is only a 3-in-1 machine, since I have no use for a fax function. Not having the number pad for the fax function enables a very clean design.

CON: Apparently in order to scan, the stars must be aligned on the 2nd monday of the month while you stand on one toe and touch your nose. But seriously, if either the computer has dropped from the network since the last time it talked to the printer, or the printer has gone to sleep, or the computer has gone to sleep (hence dropping from the network), the printer is unable to download the ''scan to'' application list from the computer. Since the computer that I primarily use is right next to the printer, I''ve tried even having the printer directly connected to the printer in case it was a wireless bug. Same problem. And unfortunately, I have to scan a lot as design student taking some courses on-line.

One of the reasons I bought this printer is that I love Lexmark''s ink cartridge return program, where for every 5 used cartridges returned, you get one free. It would be nice to be fully satisfied with their printers, as well, though.

We bought this at Circuit City for 69 dollars. We don''t need fax, so this suited our needs, plus its smaller than its HP competitive printers.

The wireless was a snap to configure. I recommend this printer.

WARNING: This Printer does not double side print automatically. I initially purchased this product because Circuit City had a sign on it that said "Doubleside Printing", now I see it doesn''t. However, I see that I probably don''t need this option, so I''m sticking with it.

I purchased this Lexmark printer after researching it thoroughly on the internet and paying attention to the reviews by customers. I received it, followed the set up instructions and in spite of how easy it is to set up, I must have done something wrong. HERE''S WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD. I call Lexmark, am speaking with a customer service rep within two minutes, and she establishes a remote access to my computer, goes in and diagnoses the problem, uninstalls the software and reinstalls it correctly. Unbelievable. I have never experienced such excellent help from any technology company. Especially computer equipment companies.

When she got done, it worked perfectly. This makes so much sense I don''t know why other corporations don''t do this. I put up with crappy HP printers for years. Never again.

Watch out for spyware "C:\Program Files\Lx_Cats" is placed in your registry whether you participate in lexmark connect or not it''s part of the (EULA) so you cannot use remanufactured cartridges, a chip in the printer itself contacts their website every thirty days with info on printer serial # and pages printed/ when last cartridge was changed among other things. Check out Lexmark spyware on the web...
