Overview and Scan Quality:

This little scanner is lightweight, easily portable, doesn''t take up much space, and is super easy to use. It takes a little getting used to to get scans straight (if you shift even slightly while scanning, table lines and rows of text will not be precisely straight). The scanned image is pretty clear and I have had no problems with bleeding, blurring, fuzzing, dulling, or anything of the like. It does sometimes pick up a bit of noise that adds a slight color in the background of monotone scans. This may confuse a printer to add that coloring should you need to print the scanned page. This scanner can scan color or monotone items and the resolution can be set to either 300dpi or 600dpi.

This is fine for quicky scans of receipts, reference material, and the like, but if you are scanning important records or anything that requires a high quality scan, you may want to practice with this thing until you get everything straight or just use a flatbed scanner for that sort of thing. You will want to scan on a white surface unless you don''t mind bits of table or more significant noise showing up in your scan.

Included Software:

The software is not required in order to use the scanner and I don''t like that it has no pdf option. The software takes whatever screenshot you select and will send the text to Word, a table to Excel, either to a file or the clipboard, or an image to a file, clipboard, or email. I did not bother with it since I use pdf files almost exclusively and I cannot tell you if any of the transfers are accurate. Whether you use the software or not, the scanner is recognized as a storage device and your scan opens as an image in Windows Image Viewer. If you have a pdf printer driver (such as CutePDF, which is a free download at the CutePDF website), you can simply select "print" in the image viewer and set it to full page to print the image to a pdf file. I have to admit that the scans look a lot better than I expected them to.

MicroSD Card:

The description on Amazon currently seems to indicate that the microSD card is optional. It is not, so make sure you have one when you get this scanner. It scans wirelessly and only gets plugged in via USB cable to transfer saved scans to your computer.

Batteries, Cables, Etc.:

I use mine for occasional quick scans I don''t want to turn the flatbed on for, such as receipts and notes. I have not had a problem with batteries running out, but that may be an issue if you are using the scanner more heavily. I use eneloop rechargeable batteries in mine without problem. The cable is a standard USB, so if you lose it, you probably have a dozen or so lying around you can use and, if you don''t, it is not expensive to replace. It also comes with a microfiber cloth for cleaning the scan window. Make sure not to use anything other than microfiber! If you lose it, the Walmart eye care center carries inexpensive microfiber cloths that will work just fine and other stores that sell glasses also carry them.

Scanning:

FYI, the image on Amazon shows the scanner going across a book page horizontally. If you will look closely, there are white lines at either end of the scanner and those indicate the scan area. For best results, start at the top of the page and move the scanner down toward you, making sure the image you want scanned stays in between those white lines. It is not picky and didn''t have a problem with me being a little jerky. Any side-to-side movement will result in slightly jagged lines, but the direction it scans came out just fine even though I am not very good at keeping an even pace.

Conclusion:

This scanner is great for quick scans or on-the-go scanning. The results are crisp and clear with minimal effort and retrieving scans from it is very simple.

After purchasing my own mini SD card and my own batteries, I was ready to do some scanning.

It is a good as it claims to be! For storing good printable scans of Black and White and colour documents, the 300 dpi is more than adequate. 600 dpi tends to produce bulky documents (more than 2 MB). Unless you have a picture with some fine details that need magnification later on, the 500 900 kb file size produced by 300 dpi is sufficient. The maximum time it will take to scan an 8.5 x 11 inch paper is 12 seconds (colour, 600 dpi) but since I use the 300 dpi all the time, the recommended time is less than 5 seconds. Very quick!

It takes a little practice getting to know which side to orient the scanner not to produce an upside down image or a laterally inverse one. Unless you have Parkinson''s disease, most people''s hands will be steady enough to scan wonderfully crisp images. The problem is that some documents/book pages have staples, dog ears and other impediments that make it difficult to roll over a flat surface evenly. As far as surfaces go; I recommend laying the document on top of a pane of glass, which allows for a frictionless gliding motion. I tried to press the document page flat onto the reverse side of the glass pane and scan from the other side of the glass but unfortunately, unlike flatbed scanners, this results in a blurred image. It seems the thickness (1/4 inch) of the glass was too much to get a good scan.

I really have fun with this scanner but of course wouldn''t recommend using it to scan entire books. I only use it to grab magazine articles and to scan receipts and the like, but it would also be excellent for pictures.

A 1 GB SD card is more than sufficient memory. I have been scanning non stop for weeks now and must have hundreds of documents and still haven''t used half of the memory. The autoshutoff after 2 minutes saves on battery life, which has only needed replacing once since the 4 weeks I''ve used it daily. A caveat since human hands are unsteady by nature, chances are that after doing many scans, some will end up with characters on the page which are stretched or compressed a bit (portions where your hand glided too quickly or got stuck on a dog ear). So don''t buy this if you have to produce large numbers of flawlessly reproduced documents or else you''ll be disappointed or find you have to strive too hard for perfection.

I definitely believe this is a good buy, though some may be put off by having to buy your own sd card and batteries (which is a significant cost). But most phones have micro sd cards now, so that could be substituted and there are always some old batteries lying round the house right? (in the remote control maybe?).

The scanner works basically as advertised. We will keep it. It is not difficult to use. My only complaint is that I wanted it to convert text into Word. I just could not get the included software to give me anything but gibberish when converting from optical to a Word formagt.But the device is easy to use and does a fine job of scanning and downloading optical files so I can save scanned documents but I cannot edit them.

All I expect in a sub $100 scanner is here. Works reliably and clearly on flat documents. No required install of bloatware on a Macintosh. After you install batteries and a micro SD card (not supplied!) you format the card, set the time, calibrate with a piece of white paper and go. There are two options, low/high (300 or 600 DPI), and mono/color. These settings are not persistent between restarts. The device always scans full-width, about 8", and is quite tolerant of jerky scans. When you plug in to a computer using the included USB cable the scanner appears as a digital camera device and all of the jpeg''s are in a single folder. There is no OCR software included for Macs so you have to use your own solution here.

We have been using this at our office as a netwrok printer for a year and a half. Mostly for documents, charts and company resumes.

Pros:

-The color laser printout of images is very good even on a regular copy paper. You get better results using bright white photo paper. We have not to try it on a glossy paper yet but it can. But just don''t compare it with an inkjet yet.

-Printing color images even for a full page is amazingly fast. Approximately mere 5 seconds per full color page.

-Compare to an inkjet, laser printers are much economical on ink. Inkjets are notorious for selling you the unit almost at a giveaway price and then selling a full set of replacement ink for the same price as the printer itself.

-Multiplatform. Windows and Mac

-Duplex printing.

-It can print up to 11 x 17 paper.

-The warm up time, around 15 secs is decent

-The spec claims a duty cycle of 120,000 pages per month. We are printing around 5000 pages a month.

Rooms for improvement:

Speed can be improve on the black and white printouts.

Can be made smaller. 28W x 25H x 23D is a huge footprint .

Price can go lower.

This is certifiably the worse nightmare product I have ever bought. After paying $4000 for it 5 years ago, the printer began to have multiple print quality problems within the first year and half. From that point on it was one maddening experience with HP [lack of] support after another. We had to pay $30 at one point to get the quality pay-per-tech-service they required us to use; the guy freaking read the website trouble shooting guide to me while I screamed at him over the phone. We took the machine in to a certified repair technician and ended up replacing the fuser, image transfer kit, and all four toner cartridges even though they all showed more than 33% life left. Some problems were fixed but others not (it can''t seem to print the same exact shade of tan across an entire page for instance, and there are intermittent black streaks that pop up.) We actually had to replace the transfer kit again after only 1 year and almost no use because it created large stripes of color along both ends of every print.

HP told us that the color toner cartridges only have a life span of two years whether they are used or not and the fuser and image transfer kit are only under warrantee for six months after installation. That directly conflicts with what is printed on their website and on the materials that come with the parts.

To sum up, we have spent over $6000 on a printer that only worked properly for 18 months (a couple thousand printed pages) and we have spent well over 12 hours of constant time on the phone with HP being treated like crap. In the most recent call I just wanted to buy the new transfer kit but the woman forced me to listen to pitch after pitch ranging from why not buy some paper to (if you can believe it) why not buy a new printer since this one is so old! I told her I wasn''t very likely to ever buy anything from HP ever again. I earnestly recommend that you never buy anything from them either!

To think I could''ve just printed my color prints at kinkos trouble free for about 1/3 the cost of what I''ve spent on this nightmare.

I support six of these units.

Overall, they perform pretty well.

Depending on how intense your usage is, you might require some add on parts such as:

more RAM

external hard drive to help with job storage and collating

IF you THINK you might need the duplexing capability, purchase the printer that INCLUDES it.

(buying the duplex unit later will cost over $100 more, to buy as as add on device)

Pros:

can do most paper sizes, including 11 x 17

service manuals readily available

maint parts readily available

add ons readily available

with more vendors in the marketplace, you can buy parts cheaper than if you had to deal directly with a single source parts vendor.

Service: if you buy the service manuals online and someone in your office has some technical abilities, you can most likely fix almost any problem that might arise. The HP service manuals have pretty well documented trouble shooting flowcharts, error code definitions, etc.

Cons:

replacement parts can be expensive for small offices, if they were not planned/budgeted for.

Notes:

if you are a high usage shop, someone should be assigned to provide scheduled maint.

parts like the fuser assembly and transfer unit should be planned for. Keep one of each on hand if you are getting close to the scheduled maint time frame.

purchase the HP service manual and keep it handy. It can help you solve most any technical issue.

This is the best printer that I''ve ever owned. Period. Considering how many printers I''ve gone through, that''s saying a lot. Let''s go through the various pieces and I''ll show you why I like it so much....

Print Quality It''s rather trite, but the number one job of a printer is to print. The print quality of the Artisan 837 is outstanding. Using decent quality paper, the output is sharp and clear. Small point type is very readable and fine lines are clearly defined. Normal single-sided printing is very fast. Two-sided printing is considerably slower, as the printer waits for the ink to dry before printing the second side.

Photo Printing The Artisan 837 adds two more color cartridges to the standard cyan, magenta, yellow and black mix. By including a light cyan and light magenta cartridge, it''s possible to produce prints with subtle shades and smoother color gradation. More expensive, dedicated photo printers (e.g. Epson R1900 or R2880, Canon PRO9000MkII) add in still more ink colors and can produce larger prints, but this printer produces excellent prints for all but the most discerning user. There is one application where I wouldn''t recommend this printer very high quality black and white photo printing. If you plan on producing high resolution B/W prints, you should look at the Epson R2880 or the Canon Pro9500MkII. Those units have light black and other cartridges designed specifically for that application. Outside that, though, prints from the Artisan 837 are truly stunning. Like all photo printers, the print quality depends on the quality of the original photo, the paper stock and the print speed. The advertised 10 second 4x6" print speed is for premium glossy photo paper in draft mode, but even that produces a pretty good print.)

Paper Tray If you''re tired of pulling the paper tray and adjusting the guides every time you want to print a photograph, the Artisan 837 has a solution the paper tray simultaneously holds both photo and regular paper in two different sections. At my house, I''m keeping 4x6 photo paper loaded in the top section, while the bottom holds standard printer paper...the printer automatically selects the correct paper depending on what''s being printed. The downside of this arrangement is that the tray has a fairly small capacity, only holding 120 pages of normal 20lb paper.

CD/DVD Printing I don''t use too many CDs and DVDs anymore, but when I did, I used a Black Sharpie marker to label my disks. (Except when I was feeling ambitious and had time to burn. Then I used LightScribe disks) No more. The Artisan 810 has an integrated tray to feed printable CD''s into the printer. Just about anything that you can think of Illustrations, photos and/or text can be directly printed onto the disk''s surface. Even if what you''re printing is just a list of file names, it''s better than writing them out by hand. One of the included software programs formats text and pictures to fit on the CD''s surface. It''s nothing fancy, but it works.

Scanning Direct to PC or USB Buttons on the touch screen display allow you to select the destination of a scanned document. The scanned image can be sent to any computer that has the Epson drivers installed. The file can be saved in .jpg or PDF format. OCR software (ABBYY FineReader) is included in the software package to convert scanned documents into editable text. Like most all-in-one units, the scanner only scans one side of the page.

Document Feeder Swinging the feeder input tray closed also lifts the feeder''s output tray to make a smooth top...cosmetically it''s nice, but more importantly, it also reduces the chances of paperclips and other office debris falling inside. I''ve copied a 30 page document without a problem...the maximum thickness of the paper stack is spec''ed at 3mm, or roughly 1/8"

Faxing It works. Outside of color faxing, which isn''t really new, there''s nothing too exciting here...punch in the number, hit the button and off it goes. You can store far more numbers than you''re likely to ever need in a speed dial directory. You can also assign numbers to various groups, so you can easily send the same fax to multiple locations.

Copier = Scanner + Printer As I mentioned above, I''ve copied a 30 page document without a problem. Along with two-sided printing, you can also automatically copy both sides of a paper. With CD printing as one of the features, the Artisan also incorporated a CD/DVD copy mode. You put the original CD in the middle of the glass and hit the dedicated "Copy CD/DVD" button. The firmware is smart enough to correct minor centering issues.

Touch screen controls Between the keypad, function select buttons, various setup and navigation buttons and everything else, most multi-function machines have a ton of buttons on their front panel. By using a touch panel that just displays the necessary buttons, the Artisan 837 considerably simplifies the user interface. The displayed buttons are bright, readable and large enough to easily use. The viewing angle for the panel is not very large; however the assembly can be tilted upwards to make it easy to read when you''re standing over the printer. One concern that I have has to do with the tilt mechanism...it can easily move up, but you have to push a release to get it to rotate back down. The latch seems very flimsy and I''m pretty sure that it will break when someone inevitably pushes down on the screen without pushing the release.

Ink consumption With 6 different ink cartridges, ink can get expensive. As always, your ink usage will depend on what you''re printing. Standard business correspondence uses virtually no ink when compared against glossy photos. Single page business letters seem to run in the 10-12 cents per page range; 8x10" color photos might as well have a direct line into your local ATM. There are both standard and high-capacity versions of the cartridges available I always recommend getting the high capacity version. Cartridges are available individually and in multi-pack boxes. I also recommend that you keep a spare set around at all times. The printer stops printing when any one of the cartridges runs dry and that inevitably happens Thursday at 11:30pm when the kid''s trying to print out her homework.

Connectivity Both wireless (802.11 b/g/n certified) and wired networking is supported, although you can only use one at a time. It was very easy to configure the networking and I had the printer up and running inside of five minutes. It would have been even faster if I''d read the instructions. Even a non-technical user should be able to quickly get it installed and working. If you''re going to be using the printer wirelessly, plan on initially use a wired connection to get it configured...you can do it through the front panel, but it''s a lot more button pushes. Once the printer is up and running, you can disconnect and move it to wherever it''s going to live. The Epson advertising says that you can print directly from various wireless devices...I haven''t tested that feature yet, but with the right software, there''s no reason that it shouldn''t. I''ll update this review after I''ve played with it.

Memory Card + USB port Nothing too special here. Like any other printer with a display, you stick in the memory card, select the picture you want to print and go. The USB port was designed to supply enough power to allow it to be used as a charger for iPods, cell phones and similar devices. You obviously need to supply the correct cable.

Extras Coloring Page, graph paper and lined paper printing Not exactly a reason to purchase a printer, but nice extras The Artisan 837 can print lined notebook paper and graph paper. Since most office supply stores use notebook paper as a loss-leader to get customers in the door, I wouldn''t plan on using this to fill up your binder. On the other hand, it''s certainly convenient if you need a couple of pieces quickly. The ability to turn a picture into a coloring page is another extra. Kids get bored on a car ride? Print out some pages and have them color them in. Just don''t leave crayons on your back seats and park in the sun. Trust me.

So...My Conclusion?

This is a really good, general-purpose, all-in-one printer for a family or home office. It''s fast, has excellent print quality and a well designed feature set. It was obviously designed by an experienced engineering team. This is my eleventh all-in-one printer, the sixth one that I''ve reviewed for Amazon, and the second one that warrants five stars...an older Artisan model was the first. Highly recommended.

I just received my Epson Artisan 837 (with $3.99 Amazon Prime 1-day shipping) and installed it yesterday. The bottom line is that Epson has a winner, I made the right selection for me, and I highly recommend this product! The printer itself is beautiful, sleek, and not too large for my cabinet-top. The printing, copying, touch panel, optics, firmware, flawless setup process and level of automation were extremely well engineered. I was able to eliminate three other disjointed components plus a separate wireless print-server and all associated cables, power cords, etc with this multiple function component. We never needed a USB cable for anything-wireless worked perfectly, even for a firmware update.

I''d been researching multiple function printers for a few months and had settled on either the newly announced Canon PIXMA MG8220 or the newly announced Epson Artisan 837. Both have excellent features, specs, reviews and capabilities. I wanted to replace my standalone Epson scanner, standalone Brother black and white laser printer/fax/copier and my standalone HP D5360 color text/photo/direct to CD & DVD printer, all with a single multifunction printer. They both would enable me to do this, but what pushed me off the fence was the auto-document feeder, which the Canon doesn''t have.

Make sure you remove the blue tape used to secure the 837 during shipping. There''s even some tape you can''t see, such as in the paper tray. By the way, some reviewers criticize the paper trays on both the predecessor Epson Artisan 835 and Canon printers. Indeed, the plastic is thin, but no more flimsy than many of my other printers and I have no qualms that it''ll break unless I physically twist it.

Setup was amazingly simple, fast and automated, using the printer''s touch panel. It walked me through the process when I powered up, including connecting to my wireless network. I don''t broadcast my SSID so it let me input my Network name, then it proceeded to verify connectivity as "excellent"! It prompted me to install the ink cartridges and after about seven minutes had primed them and was ready to print.

Next, I installed the most current drivers for my OSX Lion Macbook from Epson''s support website. The first note on the installation guide says to not use the included CD if running Lion. I never had to connect my Macbook to the printer with a USB cable at all. Once Lion drivers were installed, I let it find my Artisan 837, I configured my options for printing (duplex) and provided my header info and configured my Macbook for faxing. Last, I printed a test page to confirm everything was completed--all was perfect. Then I inserted the CD and installed the Print CD app, User''s Guide, and ABBYY FineReader (everything except the drivers).

I installed the drivers and fax setup on my wife''s Windows 7 notebook using the CD. The Epson app scanned and found the Artisan 837 immediately, made the wireless connection, and proceeded to ask me if I wanted to automatically update the firmware (I did).

I''ve printed photos, text and graphics so far and the results are truly spectacular, as are print-outs from the copy function. The scans were fast and very sharp. I haven''t printed directly to a CD or DVD yet, nor have I used the fax (other than to test that the fax configuration is correct) but I''m confident both will be perfect as well, based on other reviews. If not, I''ll post an update.

The Epson Artisan 837 is advertised as being an extremely fast (the fastest?) printer to produce 4 x 6 prints. It''s also a regular printer, a fax machine, a copy machine, a printer to DVD''s and CD''s, a scanner and perhaps it washes the dishes as well. This review concentrates on regular printing, setup and photographic printing. I didn''t test faxing and the other features seemed to work as well as any of the other all in one printers on the market.

The setup instructions are either wrong or at least I got them wrong. I wanted to set this machine up WiFi only. The instructions said to use a temporary USB cable for setup and I''d be prompted to remove the cable after setup. When I started setup, I was confronted by several choices for connections: wireless, USB, LAN what I''d expect. I chose USB per the instructions. However, when I got to the end of the setup, the USB worked fine but I wasn''t prompted to do anything. I spent a good deal of time wondering how to get the WiFi working without success. Giving up, I called Epson support and spoke to Ram. The good is that Ram answered almost immediately. The bad is that he said I messed up and should have chosen Wireless from the get go and within Wireless there is a USB choice. Who knew?

Running setup again put things to right but I was a bit annoyed at having been made to feel a dunce by the instructions. Even so, not all was right. I was given no choice about the setup installing a bunch of ''offers'' which turned out to be me being subscribed to some email. Opting out and removing the needless installation bit junk wasn''t difficult, but took some time. There was really very little you can do to customize the install except to edit it afterwards including your registry to remove auto start services I didn''t need and you may not need either (such as fax).

Normal printing seemed a bit slower than other similarly priced printers but the results were pretty good, of course depending greatly on paper quality. I tried some very poor quality paper and the results were accordingly. You don''t need expensive paper to get good conventional printing, but you do need hard paper. This is not unique to the 837 but the nature of all printers with ink jets being most sensitive.

My major test was photo quality. I expected decent results but not what I got. First, a bit of background. I''m a professional photographer using a calibrated monitor and CS 5.5 (Photoshop) running on a 12 gig RAM very hot Intel I7 computer. I printed two samples and compared them with prints from the pro lab I use to print my for sale photographs. I used the best settings (slowest) and the photo paper supplied by Epson with the printer. I got some extra paper to do more extensive testing as well.

I tried a full color print and a gray scale. The gray scale contains all 10 Zones. To my shock, the results from the Epson Artisan 837 matched the results from the pro lab. This is why I bought more paper. I thought this can''t be. It must be a fluke but time and again I was able to produce wonderful prints. The color was spot on. The gray scale (using the gray scale setting) was just magic. In fact, I never produced a print which wasn''t darn near or actually perfect including the color balance. It took the machine about one minute to do each 4" x 6" at maximum quality.

The only issue I had with the prints (4" x 6" with border) was that the border contained smears of black ink which didn''t intrude into the picture area, but which ruined the white border effect a bit. Still, I''m one happy camper with this.

One issue which may be a problem is that after only a half dozen 4" x 6" prints, the graphic showing ink capacity is visibly down if only slightly. I do not wish to conduct an ink life test because I may do it unfairly as I''m not an expert in this area.

I am somewhere beyond thrilled with the photographic results from this modestly priced printer. I''m a good deal less thrilled that after my first print, the screen popped up with an offer of some sort or another. I''d easily give this five stars for photo quality. I mean, feed this thing Epson ultra quality paper and it''s astounding. I"m removing one star for confusing setup, loading my system with unwanted ''offers'' and the black smears on the photo borders.

If you are a photographer who is serious, this machine will probably work wonders in proofing or, depending on what your lab charges, making modest sized photos. Now, if it could only make photos from 60" reels...but Epson makes another model for that at over 20 times the cost.

* We own a publishing company here in Miami. And, for roughly 7 years we''ve owned only Epson. At the time, we moved away from HP because we thought that the Epson printers were improving enough to match HP quality and to beat them economically.

The traditional weakness of Epson had been its photo imaging. We made the decision to go with Epson when they introduced their "Durabright Ink" line of printers and the promise of film-like quality reproduction. While not bad, i.e. passable, it was never quite up to the mark set by the HP line.

That was then.

WF 840 is, at about 5 months, still a "new" model. It is a printer, copier, scanner, fax with a wireless "WiFi" connection for both the Windows and Mac OS''s. Since it was released in the Spring, there have been a slew of app''s, the "Epson iPrint" in particular, that will allow you to print either documents or jpg images from your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or any configuration of the Android 2.3 OS.)

The 840 is supposed to be the prosumer printer in this line. It can comfortably hold a ream of paper in dual trays. It feels, by weight, to be about the average weight of a printer, about 12-15 lbs. Our first Epson, All-In-One, felt like a toy in comparison.

*I printed out a pdf of a 200-page book. The double-sided, long-edge, printing at 150 dpi came out exactly 12:15. By my calculations, that makes it a 8.2 ppm double-sided printing. And, it also means that it''s better than 1 sheet more per minute. And, the printing noise was barely noticeable.

If you need an All-In-One that has the basic the capacities of some of the more specialized printers, this model, WF 840, is a great consideration.

-----Workforce WP 4540------

The 4540, to be distinguished from the 840, is considerably larger AND heavier. It is designed for office use only. And, unless you have a VERY thriving business at home, the 840 may be the better choice for you. The 4540 has its purposes and it surrounds volumes of printing more than anything else.

The newest model, with double the printing capacity and faster printing speed, offers more in some areas and less in others for about $100 more.

Of the spec''s that would be of interest to the office buyer, this is the high yield system. And, there are two (2) grades of ink-standard and ultra. These high-yield cartridges are considerably different and there are (at the time of this review) no substitute or recyclable alternatives, yet.

I reprinted the same pdf book as I did on the 840 and found, with the exact printing options that the 4540 actually printed the book in 11:45 seconds. That''s only :30 seconds faster than the 840 or 8.5 ppm.

The image (photo) quality from was acceptable, but not exceptional. But, the text quality was near or equal to a laser print.

One of the clients, my company is contracted to, uses Canon copiers. And, although, I like the Canons, an Epson like this is more economical. The comparable Canon runs through print cartridges every couple of weeks and at $100 a pop. Currently, these Epson cartridges are about $35 a piece.

The 837 is an All-In-One that is especially geared toward high-resolution photo printing. And, since it''s an All-In-One, it is ideal for printing and graphic arts.

This is a must-have for anyone who needs high-quality printouts.

It''s no mystery that the least expensive purchase you''ll make is on the printer, itself. The cost of paper followed by the cost of ink is where the real money is at. Much like razor manufacturers that essentially give away expensive razors only to charge a premium for the blades.

What I find to be the most economical is to recycle and to only printout things that must be printed out, i.e., contracts and legal documents that require a hand-signature. We''re in the habit of just sending pdf''s for most things.

I''m really not sure why Epson''s Artisan 837 has the word "Artisan" within its title. It''s a great printer if you''re ONLY going to print on textweight paper and photo paper. However, if you like to print on CARD STOCK or coverweight papers -this is NOT the All-in-One Printer to buy! I''ve had several Epson printers over the years... and I''ve never had a problem loading card stocks and heavier coverweight papers in the top-feeding paper tray. That was one of the primary reasons I''ve always loved Epson printers so much. But, now that Epson has elected to go with a bottom paper tray... card stocks and heavier papers either get JAMMED in the printer... or refuse to take heavier papers AT ALL. Got this from Wally-Mart a week ago. It is super easy to set up with my laptop. It prints fairly quickly and the detail is good, however, I only have my Lexmark Z-11 (yes I know that it''s old) and a friend''s old Epson Stylus 600 to compare. USB only and you have to buy your own USB cable, but for $24.88, who can complain. It has 2 ink cartridge slots, 1 black and 1 color, but only comes with the color cartridge. You need to purchase the black cartridge for $14.99 extra. For the occasional printer, it''s great. The Black (HP-21) and the Color (HP-22) cartridges are new so I don''t yet know how long the ink lasts, but I will likely be using remanufactured ink cartridges once they become available. All in all, I''m pleased so far. 4 stars because I don''t yet know the printer''s reliability or length of time for the ink cartridges to last.

My wife and I subscribe to the idea that when you purchase something and it does what you bought it for, then it''s what you needed at the time. We finally deciced it was time to replace our old printer, because we wanted to print some photo''s and scan our old 35mm negatives.

If there is a better tool out there then this for the money, it would truly have to be an amazing piece of technology. We have a large amount of photo''s professionally printed and framed on our walls. Mostly family members. We scanned our negatives and couldn''t believe the results after printing! As good as any of our framed prints, better then most, as they are aged. The scanner seems to be very fast.

My wife is making scrapbooks for our children as holiday gifts. Using the scanner and printer has been no problem for her. We just ordered our second order of photo paper. The ink is lasting longer then we figured it would. We use Canon paper and ink, figuring it is a system that works very well together.

I''ve read complaints about the size of this machine and the cost of ink refills in general for printers. This machine is not small by any means. However, place your scanner and printer on top of each other and see how big it is. And I''ll bet you can''t print both sides of the paper with what you''ve got now.

As far as the ink goes, You have 7 ink tanks, instead of 2 to 4 or 5. More tanks to me mean fewer changes. And you only change the empty color instead of throwing out 3 partially used tanks to refill one empty one.

This all-in-one machine does everything well!!!

I bought this printer/scanner primarily for it''s ability to scan negatives. It does this job very, very well. A plastic holder is provided into which up to 12 negatives can be placed. The scanner is then activated and it scans each negative into a .jpg file of about 5Mb (it will also do the same for slides). It takes about 10 minutes or so to scan all 12 negatives, but it''s completely automatic so you can be doing other tasks while you wait. The resulting images are really impressive. They are of quite high resolution and look beautiful. A potential negative for some is the lack of an auto feed for print scanning. If you have a bunch of prints to scan, you might want to look elsewhere.

Oh yeah, this is a printer also. Like its scanning, the MP960 does this job superbly with ultra high resolution and well defined colors. I haven''t compared costs, but I suspect it is cheaper to have prints made on line. Still, for the convenience a local printer can''t be beat and the quality is equal to what you''ll get from most online printing sources. Also, the ability to choose specific paper for different tasks is very useful as well a being a way to save a few cents.

If your looking for a color printer/scanner this one is hard to beat.

This is a very good unit... it is fast and printing quality is excellent.

The big downside is the quality of the scans... This has been mentioned in reviews but not elobrated upon..

The scanner is overall fast and can scan a high dpi. However, the scans are "dull looking". There are manual controls to change saturation, sharpness, etc... (though in general it is better to do these things in Photoshop).

I have scanned 100+ slides and 10-20 photos.

Here are the scanning issues:

1) Colors are dull

2) The scanner does not do well with dark photos

3) With deep colors (like water in a swimming pool) the scanner gets confused and (rarely) all colors are too deep.

90% of my photos can be "fixed" using Photoshop... However, it takes time. I have to increase the saturation and adjust the levels (or curves) on each photo... an average of 5 minutes per slide (but usually more if I want it to look really good) .... I have an old Epson scanner (5 years old but it was decent at the time... so far about half of my old scans are better than the new ones)

If you dont have a decent editing photo program, you may be in trouble if you are relying upon high quality scans

Would I buy this again? Maybe. If you are buying this with high hopes as a reliable photo scanner, look elsewhere. For all other purposes it is great

This is my first photo printer and I am very happy with it. The photos printed from this printer are clear and amazing. In my opinion they are better than the photos I print out from the Kodak Photo Maker at Wal-Mart.

I live in a small town and cannot find Canon photo paper but have used Kodak and Hp photo paper and the photos were beautiful. One note though, don''t waste your time on ''everyday'' photo paper. The best photos are printed on the ultra premium Kodak paper and the Premium Plus HP photo paper. I haven''t tried other brands yet and will.....as soon as I make a trip out of town where they are available.

This photo printer is very easy to use, easy to learn. It is also very quiet. I have not used the scanner yet but have used the copier. It works wonderfully. I have copied photos and downsized them in seconds to print out wallet-sized photos.

The only drawback for me is I have the XD picture cards and this printer will not accept them. I have to buy and adapter for it.

The separate ink cartridges is a nice feature. No need to throw away your ink cartride because one color ran out just replace the one that goes empty.

All in all, very pleased with this printer.

The results produced by this printer are excellent. Making a print from a color slide or a color negative is easy and produces surprisingly fine quality results. The ability to restore faded colors and other flexibility features is very impressive. Prints from memory card show great color accuracy and very fine detail. Disappointment is that modifying an image (such as lightening, darkening, increasing or decreasing contrast, etc.) can not be reviewed on LCD screen prior to printing.

I purchased this printer as an after-Christmas sale item for a good price. I was taking a chance on this item, but I''m happy to say that it was a good buy. However, it may not be for everyone.

Firstly, my frame of comparison for usability is the standard Polaroid. That may sound strange at first, but the comparison comes from how I intend to use this product. The thing I love most about the Polaroid cameras of yesteryear was the fun factor. You got to take pictures spontaneously and immediately share them. If you gave it away, it was a one-of-a-kind physical memento. When I bought this printer, my intention was to use it similarly. If I''m with a group of people and someone snaps a good shot, I can use this printer to print it out right on the spot. It''s definitely small enough to take with you, and since I have a three-prong power adapter for my car, I can power it pretty much anywhere. The photos, of course, are not one-of-a-kind, but it''s really great to have a physical copy available for people to enjoy.

As far as the photo quality itself is concerned, this device makes satisfactory prints. I''ve had some problems with monochrome pictures having some blues in with them, and color photos come out looking slightly overexposed and oversaturated, but the pictures are smooth, smudge-free, and have a nice feel in your hands. One cautionary note about this printer the aspect ratio is a strict 3:2 with no options to crop or resize your picture. The printer will crop automatically from the center if your picture doesn''t fit. This can lead to the edges of your composition being chopped out of the final product.

I do not intend to use this product for display purposes, although for most shots it could hack it. There are plenty of brick-and-mortar stores that make quality prints for cheaper than you can make them with this device (though at $0.38 a print, this device isn''t exactly breaking the bank), and the only paper option you have with this machine is glossy. I personally prefer matte for display items, but again this printer is more about spontaneous fun than it is making display items.

I purchased the Canon KP-108IP ink and paper set to use as part of my new Canon A520 Power Shot Camera and Canon Selphy CP510 photo printer. I was tired of sending film to mail-in developing sevices and having it lost in the mail. We don''t have nearby decent film developing where I live either. I bought the 108 print pack which includes ink and paper. I''ve copied about 20 photos so far and the quality has been excellent-certainly as good as the typical 1 hour photo processing commercial operations. What is nice is that you don''t have unidentified people getting their jollies off gazing at your photos as they drop out of the machine.

They are printed out on handy 4x6 inch size postcards which are easy to send to friends and relatives.

It''s October 2004 and I''ve had my 2550L for 3 months now. Overall I''m very satisfied with the product. I have it plugged into my USB 2.0 port and it prints quickly. Also the quality of the text and pictures are good. I selected it because of it''s size, USB 2.0 compatible and price. It was one of the least expensive color laser printers on the market and one of the smallest. It really is quite amazing how HP has figured out how to put all four color cartridges in such a compact package.

I print mostly black and white but wanted the option of color without the smearing ink of an ink jet printer. (I also don''t like ink jets because you have to clean the heads and replace the cartridges too often.) This printer prints black and white faster and color a little slower and that was just right for my needs.

I''ve owned Epson, Brother, and Panasonic printers before. This is my first HP and I really do notice a difference in the quality of the build. I would definitely buy a HP printer again.

Why 4 stars instead of 5? Well this model doesn''t come with the paper tray that mounts to the bottom. I didn''t think it would bother me but it did. So I wound up buying the paper tray seperate. I should have bought one of the other 2550s that included it to start with because it was tough to locate the paper tray option and buy it on its own. It also cost me more all together vs buying a higher end 2550 that came with it already.

One thing that I didn''t read in the other reviews that I would have liked to have known is that the printer cycles periodically. It intially scared my wife and I in the middle of the night because we heard noises in our home that we had never heard before. It was the printer cycling. While it is relatively noisy I don''t think it would have stopped me from buying it, but I would have liked to have known in advance.

I bought one of these and packed it up to return tonight. There is no paper tray. The only way to feed paper is by opening the front door and sticking in sheets of paper. Then they hang out the front. The paper tray is an option that no one has in stock. I am going to swap for a 2550N. It comes with the tray and is supposed to be networkable.

If you''re like me, then you were blinded by the idea of a nice color laser printer for less then $500! Sure, these days you could go black and white for less then $150, even as low as $99. Is the color worth it? In my opinion: YES!

This printer, of all the color lasers, is the sleekest and most compact. Right off the bat, you will try and try to open up the paper tray at the bottom of the device, only to realize that it doesn''t open. So where does the paper go? Well, that''s the main negative...a part of the front panel opens up and the paper just hangs there much like the back of a bubble jet printer. But in this case, it completely ruins the nice look of the machine, and opens up for dust to accumulate. But for an additional $150-$300, you can buy a 250-850 page tray and this problem will be solved. This is an annoying thing, but I guess it is the price you pay for the price you pay. If you want it cheap, there has to be comprimises.

Output is AMAZING! Text is kickass, graphics are unbelievable, and photos are better then expected from a color laser. THIS IS NOT A PHOTO PRINTER, so dont buy it expecting great photo prints. If you want Kodak prints, buy a photo printer. If you want lots of quick color printouts at low cost, buy the 2550L.

Otherwise, I have no complaints. This thing is fast, cheap, and output is superior. And for god sake it is only $499!!! For that price, it''s almost like, you dont have the right to complain!

Color output is off, like pinks instead of purples and yellows instead of orange. Tinker with the controls and you can match the color on your screen.

Simply: Get this, it''s sweet.

This is a NOISY printer. It clicks, bangs and cycles all the drums on EVERY print!!!

There is NO PAPER TRAY. This is an expensive extra add-on.

The print quality is no bad but no great either.

All in all, I would NOT recommend this printer. There are other printers in this price range (Like the OkiData) that are FAR superior. I bought HP thinking it would be great like the ones in the office. I now have both an HP 2550Ln and the Okidata C5150n. The Oki is a far superior product across the board.

Think twice before buying this product for your home or small office. The noise alone will drive you insane.

Purchased this printer at a very good price then realised why!

The printer cartridges cost £240. I print 95% Black and white images, but the special chips on each of the cartridges count down from 2000 to 0 for each print wether you print one word letters or full size photos. I have printed about 1500 pictures and its telling me to replace the black cartridge, even though the prints are still perfect. I have not used any colour yet but each print counts this as usage for all the colour carts as well. The colour ones are still 100% full but its telling me they are only 25% full. You HAVE to replace them when they are full wether you like it or not because the printer wont work. I have been told you can buy the chips on their own to fool the printer but these cost £9 each. do not buy a chipped cartridge printer!

If you value your pictures as much as I do, I highly suggest the Kodak printer and digital camera. I have never had a problem with either item.

We have had very good results with the photos that printed. However, the ink cartridge runs out before printing all 40 of the blanks that are included in the kit. We now have a total of 48 blanks with no ink!

I bought the Kodak 6000 printer/dock not knowing much about photo printing or how to print a pictutre. This paper and ink cartridge is very simple to use and produces great prints. It''s a no brainer to use. This site has the cheapest cost for this item. In the last 9 months, this item has not gone on sale in any local retail store. Locally, it retails for $24.99.
