I had a Lexmark E232 for 6 or so years and it was a great, reliable printer for my modest home office needs. I wanted higher resolution with duplex and so, given my experience with the previous Lexmark, it was natural to upgrade to the E260d.

Well, I''ve had the printer for several days now and can report that it''s everything I was expecting great print quality, fast print times and no paper feed issues.

The only slight problem ... seemed to be the dreaded Mac envelope mess reported here. The first time I tried an envelope ... argh! ... exactly as other users have said, the print was off the side of the envelope. I have to admit, I read those reviews before buying and figured a company like Lexmark couldn''t have failed to solve an issue reported as far back as 2009. Looking further around now that I had the issue, there seemed to be no solution posted on the internet. I was worried. BUT ... I contacted Lexmark support and, within a few minutes they had a solution. And the solution, seemingly for the first time on the internet is:

In the print dialogue, from the menu that initially reads ''Layout'', select ''Paper Feed''. From the menu that appears, change ''Auto Select'' to ''Manual Envelope''. And that''s it.

Now, Lexmark has had 2 years to fix their paper ''Auto Select'' which seems to fail to ''auto'' select Envelope when the page size is set to Envelope ... but still their support was excellent and the printer is a bargain for what you get. We''ll see what the toner costs turn out to be but I was pleasantly surprised by the toner use of my E232 and I''m hoping this will be the same.

Bottom line: If this fits your needs, you wont regret buying it.

I bought the Lexmark E260d as what looked like the best overall value to replace an HP Laserjet 1200 that failed after years of service. Printing regular bond from the paper tray worked perfectly. I misunderstood the owner manual''s instructions on "open manual feeder door" so could not print envelopes or labels. The email tech assistance wasn''t very helpful with this problem. After several email evolutions, I called 1-800-Lexmark, expecting the usual delays and marginal responsiveness that we have learned to associate with free tech assistance. Not so with Lexmark! After hardly any recorded phone tree queries, I was speaking with a human in less than 2 minutes. He was attentive and correctly determined I''d loaded all the printer driver and other software correctly, so transferred me to the hardware dept. There another efficient, attentive techie took a minute to set up another E260d in front of him, so we would each see and do exactly the same thing. Big dummy me, had been opening the entire front panel instead of the actual "feeder door" which is the middle section on Amazon.com''s photo of the printer. I wish the manual had been clearer on exactly what was the feeder door (like a photo of the opened door), but the outstanding tech support made up for it and then some. I am a Lexmark fan now and will buy other of their products.

After my 20 years of suffering through mediocre tech support from various companies, Lexmark really shines in their helpfullness and cooperation. No giving me the third degree, no wanting all kinds of detail to prove when and where I purchased the printer. No hassles whatsoever! Lexmark simply took a real interest in my problem, then solved it logically and directly.

Can''t believe the score for this machine was dropped under 50% because one or more people (who knows if it''s the same guy with an agenda) repeatedly INCORRECTLY stated you can''t print envelopes on a MAC with this thing. There should be ''tard weighted scores'' and ''people with a clue'' scores. The tards could yammer all day that a toaster sucks because it doesn''t blend their tea for them. The rest of us can actually share valid information.

I got this printer for my home office (where my desk is in the room next to my bedroom). I read lots of reviews to make sure I chose a good performing laser model and this one did a fine job in the one month I owned it. But it has one odd quirk that no one seemed to mention: it makes periodic clunking noises when idle.

About once every 2-3 hours the machine will forward its drum roller just a bit to prevent it from staying in contact with heated parts for too long. Perhaps not a big deal if you have the machine way down the hall, but the split-second clunking noise was loud enough to wake me up in the adjacent room several times each night. And I didn''t enjoy sitting next to it all day either.

The only way to avoid this problem is to turn off the computer between uses which really isn''t very practical because the power switch is way down low on the backside and hard to reach if the printer is inside a cabinet or against the wall (like most usually are). Incredibly dumb switch design.

Took me several rounds with Lexmark online to uncover the source of the mystery clunking. Turns out this is a common feature on recent Lexmark lasers. They were reasonably helpful and offered to refund my money since the store''s return period had expired, but the entire process took a lot of persistence on my part more than some people would tolerate. I bought a Brother 5340D instead which cost less but has about the same print quality and features.

Worked great for a couple of months then started to jam. After clearing the jame it''s good for a few sheets then jams again. Tried cleaning it, different paper, premium brands, recylcled, it doesn''t make a difference. I''m pulling the receipt and sending it back to where it came from.

We''ve been using this printer for about four months now printing invoices and postage for shipments. We loaded up 6x9 heavy catalog envelopes in tray one, 200 full sheet labels in tray two (holds 500 sheets of paper but labels are way thicker) and 500 sheets of standard letter paper in tray three. We assigned the media to the different types of postage in our Pitney Bowes shipping manager and we haven''t had to mess with a thing since.

With 12,500 pages in the toner cartridge and the huge trays it''s a long time between reloads and we haven''t had a single jam, warning or error so far.

We purchased this printer for our work. It comes with two trays that fit 500 sheets per tray, even though the photo only shows the printer with one tray. I was worried that I was only buying the printer with one tray, but I researched it and the product number matched the two tray model. So I was relieved when it was the model with two trays. It is very fast and prints well. Setup was easy. We ended up buying 9 of these printers and it was well worth the money. This printer is a work horse. Was delivered very fast. Amazon had the cheapest price on these printers when I was looking.

EDIT 27 AUG 2010 There is now a firmware update that addresses the lockup issue. Took them a while to get this out while so many were frustrated, so I won''t change my rating. (Delete the spaces)

HP is aware of an issue with the C47XX line of printers where the wireless may lock up the printer completely resulting in a bricked printer. The way this happens is during wireless setup. If the SSID which the printer is looking for is not 13 chars long, wireless setup will fail and there is a good chance that the printer will lock up and display HP logo and infinite progress bar on the LCD display. Nothing will function (some get USB fucntionality) and your printer is now bricked. When this happened to me, I immediately called CS. Their ''fix'' was to issue a $140 voucher to HP shopping site for a new printer, since they already know the C47XX line is flawed with no real fix. So I happily accepted the voucher (worth almost twice as much as the printer) and went shopping for anything BUT an HP printer.

But then I decided to tinker around with my new paperweight after I got two nice 8" digital photo frames and a premium webcam free compliments of HP. Using my noggin, I figured if the problem arose from the wireless, then unplugging the wireless module inside might reset the printer. Voila! It worked and, after a few more steps, I had a fully working wireless printer again. If you are having this same lockup issue, read this thread and my procedure for fixing the lockup and getting wireless to work:

UPDATE (05/06/11):

By now this product is quite old considering all the products out there.

I still love it, it continues to function and uses the least amount of ink when compared to all the printers I have ever used.

I would buy a new one just because when this came out there was not AirPrint support.

The issue with restarting the printer has gone and the printer is always online.

UPDATE (01/23/10):

I have been using it with my wireless network, although after a couple of days I have to restart the printer in order to print from it, otherwise it does not show up in my active printers list.

ORIGINAL POST:

Have been using it for a week.

Scan, copy, printing all work perfect.

Have enjoyed using this printer.

It uses only two inks and they are cheap, a twin pack costs about $30 which is really cheap.

Love it.

The install and connection to the network went flawlessly. The print quality is very good. Unfortunately, the HP scanner software does not work with Vista. I spent countless hours on the phone with HP tech support. The case was finally referred to the Engineering Department. They are aware of the problem but don''t have a fix yet.

By the way, you can use the scanner with the "Windows Photo Gallery" program. I really like the small footprint and the print quality of this all-in-one, and therefore I didn''t return it. I will just use the other program until HP can come up with a fix. Because the HP software doesn''t work for scanning, I cannot use the button on the printer to scan. I have to go through the PC. That''s why I only gave this printer three stars.

After three hours on the phone with an HP rep we could not get the scanner to function. Three hours and they can''t help me get the product working! They should pay me to for having bought it.

''Similarly the wireless functionality was difficult to get working. After a connection was established, it was lost. After multiple connection losses, I plugged the printer directly into my router. This has solve the majority of the problems. Nonetheless, I occasionally lose connectivity to the printer. As the on/off switch doesn''t function, I have to unplug the printer at the wall outlet. How crazy is that?!!

I bought a similar product for my mother-in-law and had the same problems!

The HP engineers need to go back to the drawing board on the Photosmart All-in-one lineup.

This printer is a extremely hard to setup wirelessly for both PC''s running XP or Mac running snow leopard. It is hard to configure and depending on your network often needs to be rebooted. If you like to just logon and print things don''t buy this printer. Also, the tech support via chat is of no value. They kept me on for 3 hours, only to send me a link and tell me to follow what was on that page and then still not have it work. I am extremely disappointed with a product and I can''t believe it is from HP. Just look under hp support about this printer if you don''t believe me.

Brother MFC-8820D Laser Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax

Brother MFC-8820D Laser Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax
  • Laser printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine
  • Up to 17 ppm printing; automatic duplexing
  • 300-sheet standard input capacity
  • 50-page automatic document feeder
  • USB 2.0 and parallel interfaces, PC and Mac compatible

For our small office of 6 people, we have been looking for an office machine that is easy to operate, reliable, and cost-effective. The four contenders are HP 3330 MFP, Canon D680 imageClass, Brother MFC 9700, Brother MFC 8820D. They are all 4-in-1/5-in-1 machines(Fax, Laser printer, Scanner, Copier, Data/Fax modem) priced below US$800. Brother MFC 9700 is cheaper but comes with a 14.4k modem and only 8MB memory and a smaller flatbed; as the result it faxes and prints slower than MFC 8820D. The remaining three candidates all have excellent "pedigrees" and are well designed and built. However Brother MFC 8820D won at the end for the following outstanding reasons:

1. The ''D'' in 8820D stands for duplex copying and printing: It works seamlessly and effortless. There is no need for removing the paper tray manually (really tedious). Duplex "fax receive" saves 30% to 50% of paper by having fax printed on both sides. Now one can have some break from the cost of receiving junk faxes.

2. 32MB memory: This is more than enough for holding a lot of copies and faxes. Very good for large unattended jobs. The best part about this is again about cost. No immediate need to spend more money for upgrading the memory as is required for Canon D680 (measly 2 MB).

3. PC fax software for computer data/fax needs.

4. Expandability for network interface.

5. Digital paper count to indicate the no. of copies made and faxes received: good for cost management and safe guard against potential abuse of the machine by employees for personal uses.

6. Excellent ADF (automatic document feeder): we have not had any paper jam so far.

7. Very easy to program and operate: simple to use for beginners and sophisticated features for users who demand more advanced functions.

8. Last but not the least is the cheaper cost for its toner on a per page basis.

There are only two minor drawbacks for us:

1. MFC 8820D''s ADF/scanner does not scan a page from edge to edge. However this is true of all machines in this price range. Canon D680 omits the least at both margins. HP 3330 is the worst.

2. Large footprint. We had to relocate it to a different room in the office where there is enough space instead of putting it at a more convenient place where there is easier access. Nevertheless it''s not too bad considering that it replaces 4 separate machines all at once. Besides it forces us to walk down the hallway and get some exercies!! ;--]

... and I''ve seen lots. After getting burned (very badly) by a Sharp AL-1641CS, the Brother 8820D was a wonderful experience.

The five-line dot matrix LCD screen is essential -a device without it is going to be very, very hard to use.

The toner cartridge has a refill port on it (although Brother tells you not to use it)

The interesting "top heavy" design looks a bit strange, but comes in very handy when you realize that you can put the small footprint all the way at the edge of a table/desk.

The printer and ADF mechanisms appear to be quite heavy duty -probably only one step below the HP 8100 (which IMHO, is the pinnacle of modern super-rugged office machinery)

Color fidelity on the scanner is very good; better than most multifunction devices.

The ADF is unbelievably fast when you scan at 100dpi grayscale -I''m guessing here, but it must be in excess of 60 pages per minute. Paper literally flies through it. Color scans are much slower, but still quite reasonable.

BROTHER SUPPORTS MACS

BROTHER SUPPORTS LINUX

Unlike one of the other reviewers, I''ve found that the device scans to within 3mm of all margins -I just did a test run and it was within 1mm of most of the margins. I''m sort of amazed that it can get this close. I think part of this is that it doesn''t use the same part of the flatbed glass for ADF scanning that it uses for flatbed scanning -there''s a special separate strip of glass that curves downward to help the paper feed more evenly.

Very sharp, high quality output.

This printer has a real CPU in it with a generous amount of memory. Nothing is more frustrating than shelling out for a device only to realize that its ability to act as a printer was a complete afterthought, and that it chokes whenever you try to print anything too complex (cough, cough, Sharp, cough).

Negatives:

Paper curls a bit after printing, although every compact laser printer has this problem (due to high-temperature fusers). The paper generally flattens out after 5-10 minutes.

The mac scanner driver causes Image Capture to crash if you try to use the ADF. This is pretty annoying. Other than this, the drivers are excellent -unobtrusive, simple, and reliable. The bundled software is a steaming pile, but that''s true of nearly every hardware product.

It only holds half a ream of paper (250 sheets), so you''re always left with these torn-open half-empty reams lying around. Unfortunately the second input tray (so you can put two half-reams in) is unjustifiably expensive.

No postscript support.

In short, if you need duplex printing, don''t waste your time with any other multifunction -this is the one you want. If you can live without duplex, the range of options you have is much larger, although I still don''t know of a device that beats this one.

This device is perfect for our needs for copying and printing. The laser quality is terrific and it prints much faster than similar ink jet models. The printer connected to the home network right away and both our Windows and OS X computers were able to print. The browser-based printer configuration over the network is really nice. The paper feed on the top never jams or rotates the page. This multifunction device is a great value.

I wish that I could comment on the scanner abilities except that neighter the Windows or OS X TWAIN drivers work. I''ve submitted a request for help twice over the past two weeks from Brother''s online support page and have not received a response. It sounds like other people have very limited success with Brother''s phone support. I have doubts that this company is willing to resolve issues that people have with their products. Be prepared to return the device if all functions don''t completely work right out of the box.

I bought this unit last January. It was easy enough to hook up on my old Toshiba 4010CDT P2 266mgh laptop. Basically, the unit is fantastic EXCEPT for the scanner which still doesn''t work properly. I must say that Brother support is not fantastic. I had several sorties with no postive outcome. I even offered to take both units to them even though I have bought an on site warranty. The support guy thinks my Windows 98 o/s is corrupted and suggested I format C and rebuild. This I do not believe as I have a friend who has exactly the same laptop as me and he had his rebuilt just a couple of weeks before. I borrowed his laptop and the scanning software perfomed very poorly. It was extraordinarily slow and cumbersome. My old HP5200 was fantastic as a scanner so I new what to expect. The real test will be when I buy a new laptop soon. If the scanner doesn''t work I will take them to task.

I was pleasantly surprised with this paper I ordered it, along with some other "brochure" paper options that cost considerably more. I had a problem with photo paper I had purchased; it would get stuck in the HP laserjet printer and I would waste a lot of paper. Worse than that, it was very frustrating trying to get a simple photo printed. I read a couple of reviews to try this brochure paper and it works beautifully. Photos come out very nicely. Only wish the paper was just a tad thicker, but that''s not a huge problem unless you are giving away a photo without a frame.

Epson Stylus Photo 820 Inkjet Printer

Epson Stylus Photo 820 Inkjet Printer
  • Up to 2,880 x 720 dpi resolution
  • Uses 6-color quick-drying inks for smudge-free results
  • Supports border-free printing on letter-size paper
  • Prints up to 12 pages per minute in black, or a 4 x 6 inch photo in 48 seconds
  • Parallel and USB interfaces; PC and Mac compatible

The picture quality of the Epson 820 is pretty good even using the 720 DPI quality. I set my default to print at 720 DPI to save ink. I found the 2880 DPI quality is useless since at that DPI, my Epson Photo Paper curled due to over saturation of ink. 1440 DPI produced the best quality on standard Photo Paper, but the difference vs 720 DPI is marginal. I think if you purchase Epson''s super expensive ColorLife paper, then 2880 DPI would work. The PIM (print image matching) is just marketing. PIM doesn''t print the pictures any better. I found that PIM actually made my pictures (taken from my Sony Cybershot P-50) more dull. The Epson 820 drinks ink. I don''t know why Epson (other than to make more $$$) makes their color ink cartridge so thin and thus carrying less ink.

The Film Factory software that comes with the printer is exactly what I''ve been looking for in regards to printing common photo sizes such as 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, or wallets. I can fit 4 3x5 or 2 4x6 into one sheet of photo paper which minimizes the cost of each photo sheet when calculated by per picture.

Overall, I rate this a 3.5 rounded up to 4.0 for Amazon''s scale. Picture quality is very good...rivals a real photo. In fact a friend of mine thought the Epson print was the real photo when comparing the same exact picture processed by Ofoto.com (an online Kodak processing company). Again, the Film Factory software is very good for printing common photo sizes. However, because of the rapid ink usage, I didn''t rate this a 5.0, which is the main draw back of this printer. ...

Buy Epson Stylus Photo 820 Inkjet Printer Now

I needed a better photo quality printer to supplement my HP 1120C. My application is for personal photo printer not as a production or office printer.

I researched all types of photo quality printers for several weeks and was going to go with the Cannon until I noticed how cheaply even the high end Canons were made. I also noticed that almost no one sold Cannon supplies like the required expensive Cannon paper. The Lexmark was far too expensive to own when it came to buying ink.

I was looking at some of the better Epson photo printers when I noticed that the lowly 820 used the exact same print cartridges. Then I realized Epson has just cut the price to a hundred dollars! Subtracting the value of the included ink that means the hardware is now only sixty dollars. At that price if the print head clogs I will throw it away. But I like this printer so much I may buy more of them. It is an incredible value at its new low price. First compared to Canons at twice the price it is `rugged''. The paper tray folds up when not in use, which serves a very practical purpose. It helps keep the dust out of the printer and dust is one of the causes of print head clogging. If you remember to ALWAYS turn this printer of using the left switch (GREEN LIGHT) and keep the tray closed you should not have many print head clogging problems. So far I haven''t had any problems.

Some try to get away with as few as three colors in their photo printers but the Epson 820 uses six colors and your eye can immediately see the difference. The Epson 820 produces prints like those from photo labs on high quality photo paper. The Epson 820 ink is rated to be light fast for 25 years, which is, long enough for me. My HP 1120C produces colors which start to fade within months if not days.

Now look at the cost of owning the Epson. One significant feature of the HP was it had a print preview in the printer driver. I could enable it to check exactly what would be printed so I could avoid wasting expensive ink. Darn if the Epson 820 doesn''t have the same the feature although implemented slightly differently. In some ways I like the Epson printer drivers better as there are so many options which enable me to get exactly what I want. Some people may be turned off by so many options but they don''t have to use them. Their prints will simply be more expensive than mine will be or of a slightly lesser quality compared to what the printer could have produced. The features are there if users would learn to use them, which is better than not having them at all.

I ran into a Canon salesman at MicroCenter when I bought the Epson 820. I told him he had five minutes to convince me the Canon 750 was a better value. His biggest claim was look at how you could replace each Canon cartridge individually, as not all colors would run out at the same time. Ok that is a nice feature but in real life the colors run out pretty close to each other. That means that if I replace one color I may find out that in the next picture I print I have run out of two more etc. I like being able to just swap out the empty set and be done with it. Five Canon color inks run about sixty dollars. You can buy three Epson 820 five color carts for that price and the ink will be fresher with less chance the pigments have separated from the binder. You don''t want to store ink to far into the future from its date of manufacture just like you would not want to buy paint for your house and keep it for years before you used it.

I have also noticed that there now are continuous ink feed systems and alternate sources of replacement cartridges for the 820 on the Internet but I am not too excited about them since I am not printing that many photos on a weekly basis. I would have guessed that such products would not exist because of the chip in each Epson cartridge that monitors ink flow and declare the cartridge to be empty when ink is low.

One application my brother in law has is to carry an ink jet with him in his truck to immediately print reports and photos he takes when inspecting houses. By buying a simple voltage inverter and using a laptop to drive the printer he can achieve that goal with a better quality print output using the Epson 820. Again the 820 printer is cheap enough that if it gets damaged he can toss it.

One other detail to examine. One doesn''t want to get a printer that will be orphaned since so little supplies are bought by the public it is uneconomical to carry them. Amazon rates the sales for each product. Look at how the Epson 820 rates compared to any other printer.

What are the cons to the Epson 820?

It is slower than the high end Canons in making a photo but it is hundreds of dollars cheaper.

It is nosier than my HP as it moves the paper back and forth but that is a photo it is working with and it doesn''t really bother me.

It has a non-replaceable print head compared to including the print head in each new cartridge like the HP does. This means it will eventually wear out. At sixty dollars net cost of hardware who cares? I don''t!

Do you? Epson will probably have another hundred dollar, six color photo printer with improved technology when I need to replace the print head in five years or 16,000 prints.

I started with an HP 882C last year thinking that I had a printer that could print "photo quality." Unfortunately, it didn''t. After a year of dissappointment, I talked to my photographer brother after seeing some prints that I''d assumed had come from his office. Not so! He had used an Epson printer.

I didn''t want to buy one at first, because of all of the $$ I''d likely spend making prints. Well, it hasn''t been so bad. Unlike the other review here, I think that the cartridges are reasonable (compared to the HP that I had) and the paper is reasonable for the quality.

With other brands, paying more means better quality images. However, with Epson, paying more means faster printing speeds. This printer is basically at the bottom of the Epson line, with great quality, especially with the best papers. The black and white is crisp and clean.

Get ready though, because the prining is SLOW! That goes for color, photo, B&W print, all of it! Anything that''s not draft quality is slow, slow, slow!

If you are getting ready to make a purchase, check to see how much money you have, then compare to how much time you have. I have left the printer to print out a two page resume, 25 copies, for a total of 50 pages. It''s been quite a while...longer than an hour! That''s the only reason it doesn''t get 5 stars.

However, if you have other things to do, and a negative scanner or a high quality digital camera, this could be just the thing for you. Made plenty of Christmas presents this year!

Want Epson Stylus Photo 820 Inkjet Printer Discount?

I''m a commercial photographer, owning an Epson 1270 and the newer Epson 1280. Both printers are amazing, but expensive. I bought the Epson 820 for home use since it has the same specs as the 1280, just doesn''t print large output.

Straight out of the box, my printer was defective. The print head cleaning cycle indicated white lines. Contacted Epson and determined it was defective. The offered to send out a new unit. When it was returned, I found out it was a refurbished unit! Their policy is to replace your new printer with refurbished units. I find this extremelly irritating.

I did write a review such as this and Amazon has deleted it...I find that interesting. Much to the credit of Amazon, they picked up the slack and sent out a "new" unit. That''s why I shop at Amazon, amazing customer service. Unfortunately, the "new" unit is better, but exhibits the same problems. Epson has requested that I return the unit and try one more printer before requesting a refund.

I think Epson has really dropped the ball on this printer and I''ve had a very bad experience with their "policies". Amazon is the best and I wouldn''t hesitate to buy from them, at least they deliver on customer satisfaction.

Buyer Beware!

I have had problems with this printer and after two full days of trying to correct the problem it is going to be returned. I am using it with Windows 98 SE. I can only print 1-3 pictures at 5X7 using a usb connection when all of a sudden it will stop printing part way through the print and it freezes my computer. Epson Tech was of no help, furthermore expect to be on hold for about 15 minutes. My call was about 45 minutes in length and you have to pay for it, at daytime rates (no 1-800 number).

The print drivers were installed and re-installed, the device manager was checked for the printer and usb both were working properly. Everything other than the 820 printer was disconnected from the double usb connection on the back of the computer. The print spooler was changed from going into the hard drive to directly to the printer. All active programs were shut down except for explorer, systray and the existing print job. Ram was checked and was showing 76% available. A new 10 foot usb cable with gold tips was used all to no avail, the problem could not be solved.

When it was working properly, I found the printer to be above average in speed using a usb connection, about 3 minutes a print for 5X7 at 1440, with a parallel connection it took 11 minutes (very, very slow with parallel). If I had to use this machine with a parallel connection, I would consider another printer.

Print copy was superb, ink usage is awful, I used a whole color cartridge trying to sort out my problem to see if it was the printer or a conflict (it is the printer). I would estimate about 20-25 prints per color cartridge using 5X7 at 1440 (you do the math on cost) about 3 times more than my old 600.

I will get another 820 and see what happens, I am more than impressed with the quality of print on this machine both photo and text. I gave it a 4 rating only because of the problem and the fact that epson tech has no 1-800 number. Just for the quality alone it deserves a 4 rating.

When I get the next 820, if I have no problems and I get the same quality of print, then my only complaint would be the ink usage and cost and now in 2002 I guess you can''t get anything half decent without paying for it.

Because I have a problem at the present time I would not let this deter anyone from buying one, the chances are probably remote you would get one with the same problem I am having. I only mention this in print to see if any other owners do have the same problem and if they do then it would be good for readers to be made aware.

If you want extremely good photographic print quality, then this is the machine to buy. Remember you can always take it back if you have a problem. Epson will stand behind their product.

Do I have to give it one star???

This miserable printer will make you miserable. I''ve had a list of problems a mile long, Xerox will help you if you have lots of money.

Cons:

EXPENSIVE TO PRINT, POWER ON OR POWER RESET SUCKS $15 WORTH OF INK EACH TIME.

LOUD, "LOUD" IS UNDERSTATING THE NOISE THIS THING MAKES. VERY LOUD.

CONSUMABLES COST A SMALL FORTUNE.

IMAGE QUALITY SUFFERS DUE TO THE FACT IT REALLY IS ONLY CAPABLE OF 600DPI DESPITE THE MILEADING ADVERTISING.

REPLACED PRINT HEAD ONCE VERY EXPENSIVE, NOW THERE IS A HARD DRIVE ERROR. I REPLACED THE HARD DRIVE, STILL HAVE HARD DRIVE ERROR. XEROX SAYS IT''S A POWER SUPPLY PROBLEM.

IT WILL BE A COLD DAY SOMEWHERE WHEN I BUY ANOTHER SOLID INK PRINTER FROM XEROX.

NETWORK SCANNING IS NOT AS EASY AS IT SHOULD BE.

CLEARING INK HEADS WHEN THEY GET CLOGGED CAN BE TIME CONSUMING AND ALSO VERY COSTLY.

I HAVE ONLY USED ORIGINAL XEROX INK INCASE ANYONE WAS WONDERING.

YOU WILL NOT SAVE MONEY PRINTING WITH SOLID INK EVEN IF YOU GET THE 8860 WHCIH IS SUPPOSED TO BE CHEAPER TO RUN.

Buy Xerox 8560MFP/D Phaser 8560 Multi-Function Color Printer Now

I work in IT and work on a lot of printers and multifunction devices. A lot of my clients have the Xerox Phaser 8500 series printers and multifunction devices, and so far they have either been happy with them.

The 8560MFP/D is the multifunction version of the Phaser 8560 printer. I reviewed the Phaser, and it''s a great machine. Excellent print quality, fast print speeds, lots of features, simple to use and set up. It had a few gremlins, but they were manageable and nothing major. The MFP is no different. It adds scanning, copying, and faxing abilities. Mechanically, every function works very good. I am especially impressed with the scanner and copier. Scans were completed in less than 6 seconds.

You can do Adobe Postscrip or PCL3, PDF, or JPEG outputs with customizable templates. You can plug it in USB or use it over a network with an ethernet connection. It doesn''t have WiFi capability, but that''s not such a bad thing for a commercial device. It''s good for home users, but WiFi can be too unreliable for a business setting where reliability is key. There are buttons for each function, and a separate menu on the display for each function with its own parameters and settings. The menus were a little confusing to use and there are a lot of functions to navigate through, so there is a learning curve. I think Xerox could have made the menus a little easier to understand, especially for someone who''s not technically savvy, but with that many functions and parameters it would have been difficult.

The instructions were about useless, and I am thinking they''re meant for the IT department. On the plus side, when the printer is first installed, it will print out a status page and configuration pages that include a layout of the various menus and submenus to make navigating them a little easier. I thought that is a very nice touch and so far all of the newer 8500 series ColorCubes/Phasers have this function. The CD-ROM software also includes a set-up video, which is weird because they also include instructions in the box.

The MFP is designed for high volume printing, with a max rating of 6,000 pages or 85,000 images per month. Like the Phaser, this machine uses the same wax ink cubes that make the prints come out with a raised look which makes the text and graphics "pop." The downside is that you can''t hot laminate the prints as the heat would melt the ink and make it smudge. On the upside, you can use the same type of media as traditional laser printers without having to worry about things melting because this isn''t a "thermal" type imaging system. The Phaser works like an inkjet, but the ink for this is actually a waxy liquid that''s sprayed onto the paper in sections, one for each color, and then blended to make different colors. It''s a little like a can of spray paint, except it''s wax. Pretty ingenious.

You can''t really turn it off as the ink is kept in a liquid state inside the machine, and when the power is turned off or it''s reset and the heater stops working, the printer ejects the melted ink into a waste tank to keep it from solidifying and clogging the print head. The ink cubes last a long time, but are expensive at around $140 for a set, and when combined with the fact you have to keep it turned on all the time makes the MFP, like the Phaser, mainly suited for a commercial application. It will hold over 600 sheets of paper up to 32lb stock, and you can add extra storage to it. You could use it at home, but it''s huge and heavy and would take up a lot of space, so not really that practical for a home user.

For all the good things about the MFP, I can testify to the other reviewers'' comments about the dreadful and clunky scanning software. In a word it is horrible. I just did a job to fix a very buggy and unreliable scan utility that would lock up before and during a scan, requiring a force close and sometimes a reboot. I had to go back today to fix the other MFP in the same office that had the same problem. It took 3 hours (lots of money) to rectify the problem and get it working again. That was a good sized bill for the customer for a malfunctioning and buggy scan software. The printer worked just fine, which is what I have come to expect from Epson.

As much as I don''t like the scanner software, I still gave it 4 stars just because I really like the 8500 series. Xerox needs to go back to the drawing board with the scanning software, but otherwise this is a fantastic multifunction machine. The software problem, however, might be enough to deter some buyers. Granted, this is a random occurrance, but still something to keep in mind.

Pro''s:

Great print quality

Fast printing, scanning, and copying

Lots of features

Handles a wide variety of media

Ink lasts a long time

High duty cycle

Con''s:

Unreliable and clunky scan driver

Ink is expensive

Can''t be shut down without wasting expensive ink

So if you own a business or have a need for a quality machine that can handle big print jobs with great print quality in color and monochrome, give the Phaser MFP a look. There are other options out there that offer more in the way of features and user-friendliness, but cost more and can''t handle high print job counts on a single set of inks/toner. My customers are happy with them (Just had another one buy a ColorCube!).

This is expensive, full of problems and piece of junk machine. Inks cost a fortune and this eats them up (or melts them) even if you are not suing the machine. Takes good five minutes to warm up before any print comes out. Seems like I have to add ink everytime I print and it costs a fortune for a single print. Never buy a solid ink printer from them. Would like to get rid of this for cents let alone dollars.

Want Xerox 8560MFP/D Phaser 8560 Multi-Function Color Printer Discount?

You will stand around waiting for this machine each time you use it. This goes for copying, faxing and scanning. This is due to the ink sticks it uses and it has to "warm up" even to send a fax. The Xerox scanning soft ware is poorly designed as well. This is a waste of time and infuriating when you need to get things done quickly. Poor value overall, and after 2 years the machine jams on every page printed now. I am not even going to call out the repair guy. If I can get $50 selling this on ebay it will be good ridance for a dog of a performer. Buy a Fujitsu Scan Snap S510 if you want an excellent scanner.

Buffed up Canon software

Front loading paper tray

Cons:

Memory card reader on WiFi works for Windows but not for Mac

Slow wireless ''upload'' from printer

Shiny exterior picks up fingerprints

Completely redesigned ink cartridges means that you are stuck with expensive, proprietary

ones, at least for the time being

No continuous document feed

Long install time for proprietary software

Canon software is much better, but still a little slow and clunky

No printer functions will work (including scanning) if there is a missing or malfunctioning ink cartridge

The PIXMA MG6120 is one of Cannon''s newest line of printers. It is long on features and really is an excellent, all around printer for home use. It was easy to set up using the supplied CD and worked without a hitch on WiFi immediately on set up. The text printing on normal paper is excellent and the photographic reproduction is nearly photo-lab comparable.

Note: I am using the printer on an Apple iMac with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (for the truly savvy, this is a 17" MA590LL/A, late 2007 model). I am running OS X 10.6.4 on the Mac side and Windows 7 home edition on Bootcamp. The printer that I am comparing this model to, is my old Canon MX310[Canon Pixma MX310 Office All-in-One Inkjet Printer (2184B002)], bought from Amazon circa 2007.

WHAT''S IN THE BOX:

The printer is packaged with a quick start up guide, network trouble shooting guide, a starter pack of 6 ink cartridges, power cord, paper for print head alignment, and sample pack of 4 X 6 Canon Plus Glossy II photo paper. Extricating the printer from its box was par for the course, with the usual removal of protective wrapping and unsticking of orange tape.

The printer itself weighs in at 20 lbs, so it is somewhat more hefty than it looks and it is by no means petite at 18.6 x 14.5 x 6.9 inches. It sports a small view screen and innovative touch panel that functioned smoothly. It has a pleasing, modern design, and a glossy finish that really looks cool at first, but is a real magnet for fingerprints.

SET UP:

You hardly need a manual to tell you what to do, as the printer really tells you what to do itself once you turn it on. The carriage centers as you open the device and placing the print head in place is easy. The ink cartridges are color coded and fit in place easily. There is a thick, black cartridge that can only fit in one space, but the color cartridges are otherwise identical. They will fit into each other''s slots, but there is a guide on the print head that makes placement a no brainer. As each cartridge is equipped with its own microchip, my guess is that the printer would inform you of any errors in placement. Not wanting to mess up the color printing for the first runs, I stuck with the program and didn''t let the machine prime the ink tanks while placed in the wrong slots. Once closed, the machine quickly cleans the print heads and then prompts you to place the photographic paper in the back loading slot for print head alignment. A few minutes later, this is done. Plain paper can then be loaded in the front cassette or in the rear loading slot, and you''re off to the races.

WARNING!: A word about the ink tanks--these are a brand new style. This means that it will be some time before refurbished or third party cartridges are available for use. Although brand new Canon ink cartridges are likely to function the best, other options do significantly decrease the price per page and not everyone needs 100% full quality prints or an archival photo that will not fade in `300 years.'' You can get an idea of ink prices here: Canon PGI-225 BK/ CLI-226 C,M,Y 4 Pack Value Pack (4530B008); Canon CLI-226 Gray Ink Tank (4550B001). Note that at the time that I am writing this there is no value pack that covers all of the MG6120 inks together. Unlike other Canon photo printers you will need the PGI-225 black and FOUR CLI-226 cartridges (C,M,Y, and GRAY). At present prices, refilling the ink tanks twice would cost about as much as buying a brand new MG6120 at Amazon''s sale price. To my knowledge, no 3rd party refill kits or refurbished cartridges are available at this time.)

UPDATE 1/15/2011: Generic inks are now becoming available for the printer. But so far, caveat emptor. I purchased these 6 PKS GENERIC INK CANON PGI-225 CLI-226 Pixma iP4820 MG5220 at a bargain basement price but--as always--there''s a catch. The cartridges do NOT come with cartridge recognition chips--the printer WILL NOT RUN unless the chips are in place. The instructions tell you how to transfer the chips from your existing OEM cartridges to a plastic device called a ''chip extender.'' Once you understand how to do this it isn''t exactly rocket science but lets just say that there''s a learning curve here and only 1/6 cartridges were recognized by my printer. I will be contacting the company and trying to figure out where things went wrong and re-updated the review, but at this juncture I CANNOT recommend these cartridges. My guess is that either the chip extender isn''t lining the chip up correctly, I glued the chips on to the chip extender incorrectly, or I damaged the chip in the process of moving it. The cartridges themselves DO look like the real thing and appear to be compatible in all other ways. Unless you have experience with such things, I would avoid these. Canvassing the net, there now appear to be some vendors (ones certified by the BBB) that are producing compatible or refurbished cartridges (WITH chips). The only cartridge that doesn''t seem to be available this way so far is the grey cartridge, but I imagine that this will soon be available.

UPDATE 7/12/2011

FYI, there are now places where you can get non-OEM cartridges with working chips. Recently, I purchased these: LD © Canon PGI225 & CLI226 Compatible Set of 14 Ink Cartridges: 4 Pigment Black PGI225, 2 each of CLI226 B/C/M/Y/G and so far they are working well. This is by no means the only source for non-OEM cartridges, but it''s right here on Amazon. There are also other sources for these cartridges that can be found on the web. These come with working chips that monitor the ink levels and worked flawlessly with the printer.

The compatible cartriges give you twice as many cartridges as the Canon OEM for less than half the price (Compare this to Canon PGI-225 BK/ CLI-226 C,M,Y 4 Pack Value Pack (4530B008) in Retail Packaging and add in the Gray Canon CLI-226 Gray Ink Tank (4550B001)). Remember, generic cartridges do not have the same guarantee that they will work with a printer and often do not have the same quality control as OEMs. Moreover, the ink inside the cartridges may not be of the same quality.

If you decide to go the way of non-OEM cartridges, make sure that you use a reputable vendor. Also, as noted above, I would recommend avoiding cartridges that do not come with chips. They may be somewhat cheaper in the short run, but having the chips already installed on the cartridge makes life easier in the long run.

THE SOFTWARE:

Loading the software was similarly easy on both OS X or Windows. The supplied CD easily installs the software with a few simple prompts. In both cases, however, the basic software can take up to 10 minutes to load. On Windows, the printer is picked up and is automatically added with a click. On the Mac side, the software is similarly easy to install, but you have to supply the WiFi network password to add the printer.

The present Canon software is definitely an upgrade from the previous generation. The main screen gives you options for photo printing, calender printing, layout printing, album printing, and movie printing (this feature only works with Canon cameras). The photo print option is the most useful and allows you to print single photographs or a number of photographs on a single sheet of paper. Scanner options include autoscan, OCR (optical character recognition), attaching scans to emails, and opening of saved images. There are also options for web services, help/settings, and product information.

None of the software really represents a real photo editor, and, truthfully, most people have their favorites anyway. Nevertheless, there are some basic photo editing features such as red eye reduction, face sharpening, face smoothing, blemish correction, and brightness/contrast/sharpness/blur controls. But these are painfully slow on both the Mac and in Windows. Unless you are doing something very simple, you''ll want to use your photo editor of choice.

The scanner interface is much improved from previous generations. In particular, the auto scan feature quickly detects what you are scanning and accurately recognizes if there are different pictures, and saves them as multiple files . Manual controls are similarly easy to use. The OCR is much improved from their 2007 vintage, and is reasonably accurate across different typefaces.

PRINTING TEXT:

Printing text is both faster and better than in the previous model. When magnified, it is clear that the text from this printer is sharper and cleaner than the MX310. That being said, when viewed under normal conditions at zero magnification, I''d be hard pressed to tell the difference. Both are certainly acceptable. On the bright side, the MG6120 is almost twice as fast.

PRINTING PICTURES:

I was quite impressed by the MG6120''s photo quality. Although this is an all-in-one, it has the capability for near photo-lab quality. With a maximum 9600 x 2400 DPI, there is no visible pixillation to the naked eye when printing a high resolution photo. The colors are true and the blacks are consistently deep black without that line by line variation that is all too common in inkjet printers. The upload to the printer over WiFi did cause a short lag, but this was more than acceptable, even at high resolution. There is a definite advantage in having six, separate tanks of ink rather than four, in terms of producing true colors. I did not show a sample comparing the MG6120 with the MX310 as I ran out of Canon color cartridges for the MX310 and I didn''t think that using a refurbished cartridge would be a fair comparison. However, I would never have thought of using the MX310 to print pictures for more than casual use. Even when new, the MX310 had too high a level of artifact to produce photo album quality pictures. The MG6120 may not be a professional level photo printer, but it rivals many online consumer photo print services.

The biggest surprise was the ability of the MG6120 to produce quality black and white photographs. Given the true, deep blacks and the addition of that extra gray tank of ink, the B&W photos have an incredible richness that comes through. I have printed a sample from both printers and it is clear that the MG6120 trumps the MX310 in terms of the level of detail of the picture, the contrast between dark blacks and whites, and the subtle shades of gray in between.

[Note: I uploaded images of Lucy the Elephant to show differences between black and white print quality. Please realize a few important things: 1) I printed both photos on the supplied, 4x6, Cannon Glossy II paper on each printer; 2) I then scanned them using the MG6120; 3)To transfer the photos to Amazon, the TIFF file had to be converted to a JPEG; 4) Amazon seems to shrink the pictures down to size after upload anyway. Suffice it to say you lose a lot of resolution in the process, which actually makes the pretty awful print from the MX310 look acceptable. The MG6120 produces a dark black, without the usual uneven, streakiness you see with ink jet printers. The balance of the grays was true to the original photo. The print was nice enough to frame. In contrast the MX310 produced uneven blacks and the mid-tones were dull and washed out. Visible streaking on the photo meant made it unacceptable for even casual use.]

SCANS/COPYING:

All the pictures for this review were scanned on the printer. I believe that it produces a high quality scan (the resolution is purported to be 4800 x 4800). All the images for this review were scanned using the machine. Scanning times are quick and the software makes scanning quite simple. One caveat is that there is no feeder tray for continuous scanning, so all scanning has to be done manually. Clearly, this is not the unit to get if you have to scan a lot of pages. The copy quality of the printer is similarly excellent and is also speedy for an all-in-one.

Canon also fixed an OS X driver glitch: when using the MX310 I was unable to switch between scanning and printing (or vice versa) without getting an error saying that the device was in use. In order to switch I had to restart the computer. You can now switch easily between printer and scanner without any errors.

OTHER FEATURES:

There are numerous slots for media cards and a place to connect a thumb drive or device via USB. In Windows, I was able to access the information on the connected drive wirelessly via the software and print directly this way. On the Mac, I couldn''t seem to find the connected card or device--a clear error in the OS X software component. Either way, the download to the computer over WiFi took a considerable amount of time, given that the printer supposedly communicates via wireless n, this was surprising. Just getting the photo thumbnails to show on the computer within the Canon software program took a long time. So if you want to print via the software, it''s better to upload the pictures to your computer via a cable first and then use the software. That being said, the upload to the printer has a mild delay, but is much, much faster. It makes me think that this is some kind of software or hardware glitch that may be worked out in the future.)

The printer is also capable of printing without being attached to a computer. The small screen on the printer has a number of printing features available. That being said, it is not always the easiest thing to navigate through and I found it much easier to use the computer with the software. Still, in a pinch this is a nice feature. Being able to do layout prints, print an ID photo, and stickers directly from your printer is a major plus in my book. The printer can even print PDF files from a USB drive without access to a computer--a really nice touch.

SUMMARY:

This is a capable and easy to use all-in-one that would work well as a home printer. Unlike many all-in-one printers, it seems to perform all of its functions--print, scan, and copy. There are mostly pluses here and few minuses. That being said, for the pure text printer, a laser printer will probably print faster for a lower price per page. And for the advanced photo buff or professional, will need a dedicated photographic printer for that perfect work of art. But for the rest of us the MG6120 is a jack of all trades and master of most.

ADDENDUM 2/28/2010

Near the end of January, my original printer cartridges were empty. In an effort to save money I ordered these non-OEM cartridges: (I am using the web address because I can no longer find this using the insert product link button). These did not come with their own chips, and after spending much time prying off the chips from my original cartridges and gluing them in place, all but one cartridge failed to be recognized by the printer. This rendered the printer useless (not even the scanning function will work with unrecognized cartridges).

I ran out to 3 separate brick and mortar stores for OEM replacement cartridges--these cartridges are new and none of the stores had the full complement of cartridges. The rarest of cartridges in this regard was the CLI-226 Gray cartridge, which is only used on the new, higher-end, photo printers. After placing the OEM cartridges into the carriage, they were still not recognized.

I called Canon customer support and they walked me through the process from start to finish. They were polite and took about 30 minutes on the phone with me troubleshooting the printer. I was also assured that if a cartridge didn''t work that they would send out a replacement and if they couldn''t get the printer to work that they would exchange the printer for me! In the end, alls well that ends well. The cartridges were recognized and the printer hummed to life.

This kind of customer support is quite rare in the fast world of technology and in my estimation really adds value to this printer in a big way. Hats off to Canon for their careful attention to their customers.

This is a really great all in one printer and things couldn''t have gone easier.

The longest part of setting this printer up was waiting while the software installed. That aside this is a great printer, scanner, and copier. Photo prints are store quality. Setup was a breeze. I had started reading the instructions but soon realized they weren''t needed as the printer walks you through the setup. Setting up the wireless feature was a breeze and installing the print cartridges easy. It prints photos and documents perfectly and scans very quickly at a fantastic resolution.

The controls are easy to understand and the software is easy to use.

Some of the pluses:

Sleek and nifty interface.

Easy wireless setup.

Very easy to use.

Easy to install print cartridges.

Touchscreen LCD.

Decent wireless speeds.

Photo quality is realistic and beautiful.

Print quality is excellent.

Scans at very high resolution.

Scans and prints quickly.

6 tanks of ink for perfect photographic reproduction.

A couple of negatives:

Software takes a while to load. Especially on multiple machines.

Piano black exterior begs for fingerprints and dust.

The printer is a bit on the large size.

It has 6 tanks of ink to replace.

There are two things I don''t like about this printer. The first relatively minor irk is the black piano finish which I don''t mind too much because I won''t be touching the printer much if at all possible. Its going to be a dust magnet though. The second is financial and that is the very reason the color photos look so good. It uses 6 tanks of ink and so far you can only get them manufactured from Canon. The cost of the ink could become a roadblock if you intend on printing a lot of pictures, which is one of the major draws of this printer. Granted it is an excellent scanner too.

The only reason I rated it a 4 is mainly due to the replacement ink costs and because the cartridges are small. I use a color laser printer for everyday use and those cartridges last forever with frequent printing. I''ll be using this Canon primarily for photographs and that''s why I''m afraid of the potential ink costs. I have not printed enough pictures yet to get a "picture" of how quickly I''ll be going through the ink. Replacing all cartridges twice is just about the same as the cost of the new printer with all the ink. I am not entirely sure on this suspicion since all I''ve been using the last 2 years is a color laser-jet so I will update you on my ink usage with this printer doing photos only in the future.

In a very perverse way it kind of almost makes sense to upgrade printers sooner than constantly replacing ink doesn''t it?

This works flawlessly for me using Windows Vista and 7 hooked via wireless to 3 computers around the house all in different rooms.

This is a great machine. The print quality is superb. I compared it to an HP8500 and it beat it hands down in print quality.

Set up was fairly straightforward. I tried the wireless feature and it was easy to configure my settings but when it came time to connect my laptop to it I couldn''t find the printer. I assume I needed to load the CD drivers, etc. on my laptop as the instructions say to do, which I did not want to do.

This to me should not be the case. My Mac connects to all kinds of other printers and finds the drivers it needs. Anyway, I connected the printer to my desktop (not the laptop I was mentioning) with the USB cord and it went fine. No problems at all.

I really like the display that pops up and guides you through whatever you are doing. Depending on your job various options/buttons light up on the cover which is really neat. So what you can see are only the things available for your job. Very nice.

A major complaint I have is that the startup manual is so confusing. Rather than keep the languages separated, they chose to split the page for English and I assume Spanish. It became very confusing. This really slowed me down. But it wasn''t the printer''s weakness, but the person who made that decision.

Another issue I have is that the paper cassette doesn''t hold a lot of paper. No big deal if it sits next to your computer. But if you are using the wireless option from another floor in your home, well that could become a hassle.

All in all, this is a great machine and is performing very well. The print quality and speed are superb.

Canon has produced a very nice new all-in-one printer (print, scan, copy) that was easy to set up and has produced very nice output while I''ve been using it. As with all all-in-one printers, there are some tradeoffs to be made, and with a price point of $200 the printer sits in the middle of the current market for these types of printers. I''ve worked with other recent Canon printers, specifically the MX340, another all-in-one which comes at a lower price point. The Canon line of Small and Home Office printers have been very good and have made significant inroads into the market.

The MG line of printers aim for higher quality output and utilize 6 (or 5) cartridge printing. The results, when compared to four color cartridge printing has been spectacular. I sat down and have used the printer to print out numerous photos, both on 4 x 6 photo paper and on 8 1/2 by 11 photo paper and the results are very pleasing to the eye. The extra cartridges, adding in gray and a second black cartridge help produce some eye-popping results. The cartridges are small, but so far their yield has been very good, especially considering my printing of large full-color photos, and while not cheap, the replacement cartridges for the 5 basic cartridges are reasonably priced at about $13 apiece (the larger second black cartridge is about double the size of the other cartridges and thus carries a slightly larger price tag). So far I''ve not seen a large reliance or drainage of any one color which is sometimes seen in other color printers. The cartridges are of a new style for Canon and proprietary to the MG line of printers.

The top of the printer includes touch screen controls and a bright 3 inch LCD. The controls are fairly intuitive and the touch screen is very responsive to commands. When not in use, the controls fade back into the black printer cover giving the printer an overall very sleek design. The display is very bright and easy to read, and the system uses the screen to give quality feedback to the user in response to the touch commands both through text and images. I have had very little problem controlling most printer functions from the keypad.

The printer comes out of the box with a basic setup and instructions book, a software CD, six cartridges, the print head and cartridge cradle which must be user-installed, other quick support documents and a sample pack of Canon photo paper. Unpacking and setting up the printer took only about 20 minutes, including the testing of the print heads which was the single longest task. Attaching the printer to my wireless network was a snap, taking only a minute or two. A unique feature of this printer is the inclusion of a networking Ethernet port for wired networking, something unusual to find in a home and home office printer and in one around this price. It is a nice backup to have in case of problems with a wireless network.

The setup of the software on the client computers took a lot longer. An unfortunate side effect of many all-in-one printers like this is the reliance numerous client programs to be able to take advantage of all the printer''s functions. Even basic printing required setup that took nearly as long as the printer setup (even installing only some of the potential programs), and required a restart of the computer as part of installation. After the setup, however, printing has been a snap, producing good photos simply and easily out of various graphics programs.

On the front of the printer is a door that opens to reveal several media slots for direct printing from various types of media cards: Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo, SD Card, Memory Stick and Compact Flash, along with various permutations like miniSD and microSD with proper adapters for the slots. It would have been nice to have a USB drive connector on the front of the machine. but certainly not a big deal.

Printing speeds were quick, though the transfer of data from the computer to the printer seemed a bit slow. Once produced, though, a high quality 8 1/2 by 11 photo took only about a minute to produce, and 4 x 6 photos took significantly less time. Regular paper printing was snappy and the output very good for the pages I tried, and the automatic duplexer function was a nice addition. The regular paper tray, however, is not designed for real business work, holding only a couple dozen papers from the tray underneath the output tray. The back loading slot for photo and regular paper handles a lot more paper, though again only maybe 100 pages at a time. You just need to check your paper supply before sending more than a single page to the printer.

Canon boasts the ability to produce full HD movie stills to the printer, though this option apparently only works with HD video shot using Canon video recorders. I was unable to test this feature out.

The scan and copy functions are quick and sharp and produce very nice quality output. The addition of the LCD screen and the touch control replaces the ability for the unit to have an automatic document feeder a feature that is available on several cheaper all-in-one. In this case it is part of the tradeoff of a sleek design and functionality. If you are a frequent scanner, this omission might be a point to consider when looking at the unit. I think in future lines you will see this convergence, considering that traditional controls and a document feeder co-exist easily on other Canon lines.

The unit itself is relatively quiet when in use, except for the self-testing when the unit is powered on. Even when in standby mode the unit has some very bright lights showing, making me wonder how much power the unit is drawing when not in use. The construction feels solid for the printer and gives you the feeling that it is well made and worth the price.

Overall I''ve been very happy with the unit and the results. I wish Canon did not require so much software to use the basic functions I''d like to have been able to print simply through Windows, but that is not a huge problem. And the software installation allowed me to pick and choose software components, so I didn''t have to load all the programs onto a computer that only needed basic printing functionality. This is a very good printer for the price, especially considering the gorgeous output, especially if you are looking to output photos.

So got this printer for the wife for Christmas. Great printer slick has everything I need in a printer...... Except and endless supply of ink. I literally printed of 2 photos and test papers and a passport application. I looked at the ink levels and the yellow and cyan are running REALLY low for that amount of printing.

I will say that the photos are FANTASTIC and even went as far as to buy the great quality paper. The printer pictures are SUPER clear and great quality.

The wireless capabilities makes it easy for me to place this where ever I want and not have to take up space around my desk. Did find I had to remove the back plate for it to feed paper correctly from the back feeder.

All in all a good printer but waiting to see what the ink costs will be. I will keep you updated.

Hewlett Packard - HP Q5449A Premium Inkjet Matte Presentation Paper

Hewlett Packard - HP Q5449A Premium Inkjet Matte Presentation Paper, 8.5 x 11 inch, 150 Sheet
  • Use for great presentations, proposals, reports and newsletters
  • Print on both sides of this bright-white paper with coated matte finish for vibrant colors and sharper text
  • Dazzle your clients with this professional-weight paper that looks and feels impressive
  • PEFC-certified fiber from well-managed forests
  • Recyclable in community collection systems that accept mixed paper

I received this product as part of the Amazon Vine program. It came as a bonus to the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Wireless e-All-in-One (CM755A#B1H) I received to test drive.

After printing off a newsletter and a photo or two with regular paper using the 8500A, I was disappointed to find that the paper was overly saturated with ink and the images were not as sharp as I would have liked. When I traded the regular paper for the Hewlett Packard HP Premium Presentation Paper 120g, Matte (8.5" x 11") (Two-Sided) (150 Sheets/Package), Part Number Q5449A, it made all the difference!

Images whether photos or graphics were sharp and bright on this paper. The text was too. Colors were true, and the matte finish was easy on the eyes.

Because of this paper being ''two-sided'' (I thought that was funny because ALL paper is two-sided isn''t it...), it is specially coated on each side to not let ink soak through to the other side. I didn''t notice it doing it when both sides were printed, but initially was worried as when I did a photo on one side without doing the other side, I did notice some spots seemed to bleed through slightly. That could be my printer an inkjet who thinks she''s a laser printer just shooting the ink a bit more heavy handedly than others may.

Overall I''m very pleased with this paper. It''s not a super thick paper, but would work very well for school, home and office projects with lots of graphics or photos. Being ''two-sided'' it also will cut down on using too much paper. Essentially, when you purchase this box of 150 sheets...it''s like buying 300 because you can use both sides and have the end-product come out equally fabulous.

These labels are real good but the price is a killer. These should be half the price they are but they are just about the only product out there. A viable alternative is the Ace Disc Labels (61460)from tapeonline.com you get 100 labels for around 20 bucks, depending on where you live. A much better deal but you have to be more careful applying them because they don''t have the "handles" the Avery labels have. Otherwise, they''re identical.

This product together with the Avery "stomper" works like gangbusters. Full color graphic printing comes out beautifully. No problems with drying, I wait an hour or so just to be sure. I use Canon MX870 ink jet all-in-one printer. I use CorelDraw 10 to make the graphic for the disc. I prepared my own template by scanning a picture of the template and with measurement and testing, it worked fine. (Vertical distance between two graphics is exactly five inches to make things easy. You make the upper graphic then drop duplicate down 5" to get lower graphic.)

I have been using the non-full face labels for years and hated the big hole in the center. Now I realize the full face version requires only a 5/8" hole at the center. Much easier and elegant artistically. Why does anyone want the old type? The hole in the disc is just under 5/8".

The Avery "stomper" fixture Avery CD/DVD Label Applicator ( 5699 ) has a provision to grab the two "ears" on the Avery labels. This makes centering and application very easy and precise. My old "Stomper" is retired as it lacks the ear holders.

I have had no problems with the label separating in the printer or gumming up my player, but my experience on this is limited.

Sorry, but this product is a complete waste of money. Not only do they not adhere well but when you proceed to try to correct this problem low and behold the ink smudges! This is after allowing the labels to dry for 10 hours! The glossy surface of this label does not absorb the ink properly! For a dollar per label I am very disappointed with this product. Do not waste your money on these!

The case gives excellent protection to my printer and notebook, it also has good storage space that I use for paper, wireless mouse, 10-key pad, CD''s . . .

My only complaint is with the handles, within a week one of them torn loose from the case, I don''t feel comfortable using the shoulder strap, but it works just fine.

Overall the case is a good product, I do feel that HP thinks it''s more valuable than I do after having it for a while. List price of $89.99 is more than I think it''s worth. At that price, I wouldn''t buy it again.

Since HP produced the mobile printer, we''ve needed an answer for transporting the printer along with our laptop. This is their answer and they''re the only ones I know of addressing this issue. If you''re going to get a mobile printer, you''re going to need this bag to transport all your mobile gear together. The center compartment holds the printer and all the adapters for printer and computer and you might as well throw the phone charger in there, and the outer compartment on one side protects your mobile computer while on the other side you will find the pockets for digital media, pens, accessories and files.

I do wish they''d put some wheels and a telescoping handle on this bag though. With an entire office packed in there, if you''re going through an airport, this can begin to weigh on you. It does have the sleeve for sliding over the handle of another wheeled bag so you do have some method of putting all that gear on wheels. Most airlines only allow one carry on bag, so if this is going to be your carry on, there go your wheels.

I''ll take it rather than leave it.

I purchased this product so I could make t-shirts for my friends and I to wear at football games. I found them fairly easy to apply, and the colors came out rich and bright. They got kinda crackly after going through the wash, so I wouldn''t recommend these to someone looking for a long-wearing design, but they were perfect for my purpose of a-couple-time-use spirit tees.

In the world of tee-shirt transfers there are inverted and regular iron on. The labels on all of these products are a little lacking. This particular brand and style are a very good quality and we were able to make about 25 tee-shirts for a anniversary party. The hardest part is getting the computer to do what you need it to do.
