HP Photosmart Plus Wireless e-All-in-One Printer
  • This Printer comes with Power cord, Reusable tote, Accessory bag, HP 564 black cartridge (approx. 250 pages), HP 564 cyan, magenta, yellow cartridge (approx. 300 pages each), CD with software and Reference guide.
  • Now AirPrintcompatible. Simply print from iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
  • Use the auto-engaging photo tray to easily print lab-quality, smudge-resistant photos that last.
  • Get fun and useful templates for calendars, games and more, using HP Quick Forms.
  • Print and share from multiple PCs in your home, using integrated wireless.
  • Reduce waste by choosing an all-in-one that is shipped in an innovative, reusable tote bag.

The printer was packaged in a light weight tote bag in the box, so I could just easily pull out the printer. In the box, there was a complementary 4x6 glossy photo paper (100pack) with a set of ink. A power cable and a brick came in a reusable cloth pouch, and I thought that was very nice idea since it''s less trash and easily recyclable.

Setting up the printer couldn''t be easier, even with wifi set up. I took about 15-20 minutes to set up everything: wifi, hp software, and the first time printer warm up. I also did not need to connect any USB cable to set up; instead, I was able to connect to my wifi network without any hassle. This printer alone acts like a computer, and it included a step by step set up assistant on the main screen, which was great. The instructions might show only WEP for security option, but I was able to connect to WPA2 with no problem, even in the closed network (airport extreme.) And since this printer has wifi connectivity, I didn''t need any extra equipment to buy, and I figured that''s why the printer didn''t come with a USB cable.

Printing was also as easy as pie. I was satisfied with the sharp and fast printing result in both b/w and color documents. What was more satisfying is photo printing. I tried professionally prepared images on this printer (4x6 photo glossy, in photoshop with proper setting) and the result was better than my expensive Epson photo printer. I was surprised how accurate the color was, although de-saturated black and white photo print showed a bit of green cast.

Scanning and copying also do their job very well. I was able to scan easily with or without HP software on Mac. Copying is another simple and cool feature. I didn''t even need my computer on. All I needed to do was press one button. If you need to change setting on any features, you can do that as well with no effort on its easy UI screen.

Apps! I never knew printers had apps. Yes, why not? As I mentioned, this printer acts like a computer, and it''s connected to the Internet. Applications included: Yahoo and MSNBC, PBS Kids (great for coloring sheets!!!), Sudoku, Disney, USA Today, Quick Forms, Dreamworks, recipes, Nickelodeon, weather, and coupons. It''s just amazing what printers can do now. My three old son saw me printing a coloring page from PBS Kids app, and now he can just do that by himself, similarly as if he was navigating an Iphone. (Actually the screen looks like a big Iphone.) Also, I can manage these apps from the HP website that my printer is connected to (registration required.)

Snapfish is another nice feature about this printer. There is a SD/MMC card slot that this printer can read photo files for printing and uploading/sharing to snapfish. With this HP photo smart printer, I really don''t need a computer to print photos and share online with friends and family. I only wish this printer had a USB slot instead of a SD/MMC card only slot. I know SD/MMC cards are kind of standard these days, yet there are also people with CF cards and other types.

The most advanced feature this printer can offer, I think, is the ePrint. This printer has its own email address, so just by sending an email to the printer, it will print out documents and photos. This is really useful if you have a smart phone and don''t want to buy a printing app which usually isn''t cheap. When I emailed a word file for testing, it printed immediately. Also, attached a jpg photo file to the email printed the attached photograph on the photo paper pulled from tray. The printer automatically decided where to print (between regular paper and photo paper) depending on the file type I sent to the email, which I can also manage in the setting.

Finally, if you have an iphone, you will love this feature. There is a photo printing app (HP iPrint) from HP in the app store for free. I was able to print photos from my iphone instantly(under same wifi network). I was so happy with this that I printed more than 50 photos, and the results were just wonderful. One thing I noticed was the photos were slightly lighter than what I see on my Iphone screen.

There are a couple of things I''d like to mention. This printer has a speaker somewhere so it makes button sounds. Since the buttons on the touch screen are pressure sensitive (I might be wrong), it''s neat to hear that button sound when I press something. I didn''t have to wonder whether the button was really pressed when touched. And this printer falls asleep after idle time; the illuminated power button will then start breathing (Mac computers do this during sleep mode. However, when the printer receives email or jobs, it wakes up instantly and starts printing. This may not be very important, but I could tell that HP paid attention to details when they made this printer.

Overall, this printer is most definitely worth the purchase. I have not stopped fiddling with this printer since I received it. I guarantee consumers will be happy with HP (finally!).

UPDATE

HP just updated their iPrint iphone app as universal binary some days ago, so it works beautiful on my iPad as well. Great for printing my kid''s iPad art work !!!!!

This is a fairly decent printer for the money, except that "for the money" goes a little further than the advertised price. I mean that after I had printed only around twenty pages in black and white, the computer told me it was running low on ink. Yes, like most inkjet printers, this comes equipped with seemingly trial ink cartridges. I cannot say that I like this, which is why I prefer laser to ink (for various reasons, not just because of the cartridges), but it is there none the less. This does have to be pointed out at the first of this review because the box might as well say: "ink cartridges required". With the latter concerned, this printer takes three different cartridges equaling the total sum of around fifty dollars. If you are going to purchase this be sure to add that extra $50 to the price so that it is more accurate.

As far as overall ability of this printer, it gets graded:

5 stars on user friendliness,

5 stars on looks,

3.5 stars on printing ability,

And 5 stars on function.

To setup and use this printer could not be any easier. When you first power on the printer, the on screen guide will instruct you exactly how to set it up with your computer and wireless connection. The screen itself uses a touch screen instead of buttons (there are no buttons anywhere); and where many products are plagued with faulty touch screens, this one out shines them all with a perfectly fluid, and sensitive touch mechanism. The latter is one reason alone to purchase this printer. The outlay of the screen is along the lines of a folder within your computer, with the interface of a web browser this being very comfortable to use for the majority.

With the wireless connection, you can stash this printer anywhere in the house as long as it is near a wall outlet for power, and in the vicinity of your wireless internet, should you have one. ***In order to use the wireless function you will need a wireless router.*** Setting up the wireless connection is as easy as waiting for the printer to find your connection, and typing in your security code, if you have one enabled. Total setup time for the printer is around 15 minutes. This includes, installing software on the computer, calibrating ink cartridges, setting up wireless connection, and printing test pages.

The look of the printer could not be any more simple. It is black and shiny, though the top portion of the printer (where you will be lifting a lot for copies and scans) is lined with rough edges so there will be less fingerprints. Overall a printer that does not draw attention to itself as a piece of computer equipment, but will merge very well with a household full of modern devices.

Printing on this machine can be a fast task, should you leave all the settings as they are. For example, when I was printing out resumes I adjusted the settings very slighty (changed printing on regular paper to premium), and the printing time for one page slowed down to around 30 seconds. Also, when printing on photo paper, the printer will retrieve the paper from a little 4" x 6" slot, but when printing out random images, could not get the photos to completely fill that area. Routinely I would print very big photos from my computer only to have them turn out like a 1" x 2" thumbnail (and yes, I adjusted the settings many times). Moreover, the quality of the photos were not very good, usually being kind of grainy. Scanning and copying are very simple on this machine, however in order to scan something you will need to first go to your computer and open up the HP PhotoScan software that came with the printer. When adjusting scanning details past 600dpi, the scan time can be sort of slow (average 30 seconds to a minute, depending on size). Overall, the ability of the printer is a little mediocre.

As stated before briefly, this printer is fun and easy to use. By fun, I mean that you can print many different things from this printer from their "app" menu, as well as download more directly from the printer through HP''s own store (which is free). For instance, you can print notebook paper, a maze (easy, medium, difficult), suduko puzzles, even pages of newspaper all from the touch of your finger, and from the printer''s wireless connection. Moreover, you can print calendars and pictures from your phone directly on the printer.

I am not imploring you to buy it nor am I deploring you from doing so; however if it is the ease of use with the many extra utilities that you want, this is it. In the end, this is an average printer with a deceptive price-tag.

HP Photosmart Plus B210 e-All-in-One Printer (CN216A#B1H)

I got this printer to replace another older HP printer that I had damaged during a move. So far, I am still impressed with HP for both computers and printers.

I love the packaging with the new HP printers; the all-in-one was in a carry bag to aid in making removal easier. Another great feature is that HP included a whole pack of 4x6 advanced photo paper.

I added the ink cartridges, plugged it in and started the software. I had no problem connecting to my router (I am using WPA security instead of WEP for the router). You can also print and scan directly from the printer and not use the computer at all.

The picture quality is outstanding, bright, clear and sharp colors all in no time at all.

My other two printers had five ink cartridges and I wasn''t sure how this printer would compare with only four ink cartridges. But I am really glad to see that the quality is impressive. When doing a side by side comparison of the same photos the B210 HP printer (4 cartridges) and the HP Photosmart Premium C410a (5 ink cartridges) the photos are slightly lighter.

From an operation standpoint, the touch screen is nice and easy to use. The scanner operates easily. You can scan from the printer or computer and save or directly print. We scanned a lego "heart" my son made and then printed it and it looks just like the lego creation. The quality of the photo was really good.

The photo software included has many options and backgrounds and is very simple to use. There are landscape photo book pages, square photo book pages, prints, collage prints, photo cards, quarter fold greeting cards, single page calendars and photo cubes. There are themes such as birthday, love, travel, etc. Designs under each theme allow you to choose the perfect background for your photos. You can also add text and touch up the photo fixing red eye, brightness and cropping of your photo.

I scanned documents and they came out fine. I would recommend gray scale for lighter or not solid black and white (like a picture drawn in pencil). For solid black, choose black and white when printing a scanned document.

I printed out some worksheets and the quality for those are fine and clear.

After printing 27 4x6 photos, 3 8x10 photos and over 85 worksheets (black and white), the ink levels are more than half full. The black ink is more than ¾ full.

Just an FYI, if you are shutting down your computer and printer for awhile make sure when you go to turn both on that you turn on the printer first. This has to do with the correct IP address being recognized for wireless printing. Also, if you are alternating printing both photos and regular documents make sure you check properties so that you have the correct tray chosen (photo or main tray) and check the correct paper and size.

Overall, I love this printer and I am very impressed with the photo quality and ease of use.

Arrival:

When the printer arrived along with two others, I have to admit that I was worried. The shipping box was pretty well battered, on corner and side totally crushed. Nothing rattled around inside, but still, it wasn''t pretty. Thankfully, after a full inspection, I found nothing had gotten to the HP box inside, only the Amazon box has been damaged.

Inside the box along with the printer was a full compliment of printer ink cartridges, a zip up bag with cables, and even a carry all bag for the printer itself. The bad seems to be the thing for the new HP printers. I''m not sure how many folks would carry around a printer this size, but, it''s a decent enough bag.

Setup:

Setup took about 30min, most of which was spent unboxing, taking off the protective tape, and waiting on Vista to load up the drivers and software. Pretty much, just plug it in and follow the onscreen instructions. That was all there was to it, which is a plus for the non-tech types. It found our home network quickly, and the onscreen instructions and demo movies for setup were spot on, and repeatable across Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Usage:

For this review, I''ll be comparing against HP''s similar models, the C410a and CQ140A#B1H. I feel this is a fair assessment of HP''s current top to bottom all-in-one wireless printer lineup. As of the time of the CN216A#B1H runs $90, the C410A $160, and the CQ140A#B1H $345.

Each of these units has the ePrint function, which lets you print from pretty much anywhere. You can use HP''s phone app or email the printer directly and it will do the rest. The printer figures out which paper should be used based on what you sent it and spits out the print. It worked pretty well, and I had some fun sending various things to the spouse as surprises (they sit next to the printer). Lag between sending and printing was minimal, maybe 1-2 min max.

While the CN216 has a larger LCD than the C410A, making navigating the menus easier, it doesn''t have double-sided printing, auto document feeding, dedicated fax support, or built-in wired networking. READ: If you don''t have a wireless network, this printer may not work for you! The scanner is on par with the much more expensive CQ140, 1200dpi, but lags way behind the C410A''s 4800dpi. Pages per minute printing in both black-and-white and color are off by just a couple of pages. All three use the same ink cartridges, however the CN216 doesn''t utilize the special photo black cartridge the other two do. This means you will eat up your black ink a lot quicker. And finally, while there is no dedicated fax support, the CN216 has eFax service. You get 20 pages a month free, and pay per page after.

I didn''t dig into the other features a whole lot, but dabbled with the online features. These some into place when the printer is connected to the internet (via your network) There are some game apps, and some web apps like MSNBC and Yahoo, as well as some kids sites. You can easily pull these up and print directly from the site preloaded pages of Sudoku, coloring pages, top news stories, etc. You can also install more apps. It is a pretty nifty feature, and I was able to print a page of Sudoku in about 30 seconds, and the top news stories easily as well.

Speaking of ink, we tested the ink out on multiple types of photo paper. My general rule of thumb is to use the same brand photo paper as the printer. After all, it would make sense for them to formulate their ink to match their paper and vice versa. Interestingly, all the photos we printed came out the same in appearance. However, I noted that the ink didn''t smear when some moisture (spit) was lightly rubbed on the HP paper, though it did on the Epson and Kodak premium paper we had around the house.

Bottom Line:

Overall, we really like the CN216 is a decent home printer, though it lacks some features found in similar models from HP and other vendors. Compared to the models mentioned in this review, it performs on par with the expensive CQ140, but missing only the tablet and duplex printing function. Given that it''s also $250 less, I''m willing to be forgiving on that.

Save 33% off

I bought this printer because it had the features I was looking for and looked like a bargain.

The wireless setup was relatively painless, but the wireless router forces a renew every day so we have to reconfigure the printer nearly every time we want to print (from Linux and Apple). Setting a static IP on the printer is not an option as far as I can tell.

The scanning capabilities have been pretty good.

The printing capabilities stink. Even as I write this review the printer is "thinking about" printing about half the time it never prints and I have to cancel. Pages are ejected onto the floor even with the pathetic piece of kickout plastic designed to prevent it. Sometimes a printed page is sucked back up into the printer causing a nasty jam with a page on top and bottom that''s very difficult to clear. I know that sounds ridiculous and silly, but it happens.

The TouchSmart screen is not as useful as one might think. The only thing I''ve found useful on it is the Setup. Never tried the Copy feature.

Avoid this printer if you''re looking for something reliable and won''t frustrate you.

I calculated toner consumption based on the price of their high-capacity toner, which they claim is rated for 9,000 pages. Don''t believe it. The "low toner" indicator comes on at around 5,000 pages, and the printed pages look fairly washed out by then. By 7,000 pages, the printed pages look too washed out to even read anymore, even with lots of toner shaking.

This is with copying and printing text documents, many of which do not take up the full 8.5x11 area (e.g. photocopies of driver''s licenses).

There are a few other minor problems. The network drivers consume a lot of resources and are a bit squirrely. The document feeder frequently pulls through multiple pages at a time and is difficult to unjam. Mostly, though, the main problem is toner capacity. Based on the claimed toner capacity, I calculated that this printer would have very low per-page costs compared to other printers. In practice it''s not nearly as economical as I thought it would be.

This is a great machine for the money. Warm-up speed is quick and when it begins printing, it prints fast and quite. This machine is great for a home or office environment. The scan to email function is superior to all of the other multi-function machines I''ve owned. The scanning software minimizes the number of trips you need to make to the machine, so if the printer is in another room, you don''t have to run back and forth a bunch of times. The duplexer in the printer works flawlessly. What else can I say, it''s quiet, reasonably priced, fast, and has great print quality.

I did run in to a significant installation problem during setup. I set this machine up on 5 different computers. Everything appeared to go fine during the install, but after I shut down 2 of the computers at the end of the day and started them up the next morning, Lexmark''s scanning software completely locked up 2 of them and would not let the operating system boot up. Since I didn''t need scanning capability on these two machines, I ended up starting them in safe mode, removing the scanning software, and everything worked fine after that. I never called Lexmark''s technical support to see if they had a fix for the problem.

After reading all of the hype about this printer, I bought one in 2011. Since buying the printer I have been through 2 cartridges and I am currently awaiting a new cartridge ordered from Amazon. This printer requires a bit of finesse. The network drivers are the issue. At least 5 times I have spent over an hour with Lexmark on line and on the phone. This printer comes with lifetime customer support, and let me tell you they are good, seriously good. they can take over your computer, and have everything up and running in no time. Although I have had alot of issues with the network drivers, they have always been able to get me up and running. From changing routers to modems, they have always been able to help.....the biggest issue was that the printer kept on changing IP addresses, meaning it kept getting lost on the network....so I fixed that with a permanent IP address, customer service helped. This was why I had to call twice. The best thing about every issue is that Lexmark customer service fixed the issues and added new software. The problem is the software and not the product. Another issue was scanning to pdf directly from Adobe Acrobat; initially the system would not scan from Acrobat but would allow me to use the scan center software sending it to Acrobat. This is just annoying but a work around. Instead of trying to match everyone elses drivers in all programs, they decided to have one scan center and push everything from their software to other programs. Not a bad idea and it always works. This is a work around and over time I had adapted.

The thing I hate most is getting up to push a button every time I scan, painful. I should be able to click and scan but if there are numerous people scanning, this allows them to dictate who and when.....this is a home office product, not a 50 person office product. The other issue that cannot be worked around is the toner and cartridges. I think toner usage is not what is should be especially when you talk about how many pages you should get and no one ever gets the high level of production from any of their cartridges, this appears to be just false advertising----

All in all this has been a workhorse for me. I waste alot of ink and paper so maybe I should not complain about toner but it seems to fall short on toner but as far as function, it works and it works well. My experience in computers is not novice and if you think it is plug and play network printer, forget it. Buy an HP for plug and play. I actually like how complex this machine is but I understand that it prints quickly when you have a new toner cartridge and gets slower as the toner runs out. I have to shake the current toner every couple of pages to keep it printing nicely.

If you are experienced with networking, know how to find work arounds and learn new ways to use their Scan Center, this thing is a great office companion. The scan to email and scan to program function works flawlessly AFTER the network drivers are working. If you cannot get the network up and running correctly, just keep it plugged in. This will save you hours of pain. It is a love and hate relationship. The comfort of Lexmark service for the life of the product is second to none. This is definitely the best part of the product. It is odd no one mentioned the technical customer support. Obviously. many of the other purchasers should have called them before writing such horrible reviews. I am sure they can help most people get things up and running. All you do is give the control to them and it''s all fixed.

I purchased this Lexmark X264dn MFP for my home office because I needed a B/W printer, copier, scanner, FAX device (I use a dedicated HP color laser jet printer for all color printing). What amazed me about this product was amazon''s PRICE which included free delivery (given the weight and bulk of this MFP this is not to be underestimated). Given this price, and Lexmark''s reputation (we use Lexmark professional printers/copiers at work) I decided to purchase it.

My observations after three months of daily usage :

Printer/copier :

straight forward operation, excellent quality. Automatic duplex feature is very nice and saves paper.

I have had not problems with the ADF or the paper tray, i.e. no jamming whatsoever.

Scanner :

once you learn how to use Lexmark''s "scan center" software, it is a straight forward operation saving scanned images to MS Word documents. The instruction manual is not very explicit about this and could be greatly improved

FAX :

getting the Lexmark X264dn to SEND FAXes is reasonably straight forward. However,

getting it to RECEIVE FAXes requires some work. For starters, the instruction manual is WOEFULLY INADEQUATE describing the FAX features; it contains no explanation whatsoever about receiving FAXes.

After I searched around on Lexmark''s customer support web site I found several technical bulletins that explain the settings for receiving FAXes that have to be configured correctly (I use a single phone line with a separate answering machine which is the most tricky set-up). After some trial and error I was finally able to get the FAX modem to recognize FAXes AFTER the answering machine

has answered an incoming phone call.

If you want to receive FAXes, be sure to read these technical bulletins first; it will save you much time and frustration.

Bottom line : a decent MFP with a very attractive price, instruction manual is

inadequate for receiving FAX operation

HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium Wireless e-All-in-One (CM758A#B1H)

HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium Wireless e-All-in-One
  • Print plain paper documents that resist water and fading using pigment inks.
  • Increase your productivity with automatic two-sided printing.
  • Create professional-quality color prints
  • Lower cost per page
  • Individual Color Cartridge

This is a great printer. However you view it, it not only meets, it surpasses expectations. Many people would be content with an all-in-one (AIO) that prints, copies, scans, and faxes with minimal setup and maintenance. Wireless network printing would be a nice bonus. Color printing would also be a nice bonus. Low cost per page would be another nice bonus.

This goes well beyond even those features. It has automatic two-sided printing and the Premium model includes a second paper tray. I had a paper jam, possibly due to having an almost empty paper tray, and the OfficeJet provided visual prompts for clearing the jam on its screen, just like the expensive machines at work. It is truly office quality.

What is also impressive is the low power requirements for this printer. Using a wattmeter, I measured the operating (9W for downloading a printer app, 28W for printing), idle (6.8W), and power saving (3.6W) modes. Compare this with a Canon MF5770 laser AIO operating (500W peak, which I measured twice because I could not believe it was that high), idle (20.6W), and energy saving (14.0W) modes. The OfficeJet also started and completed printing much sooner than the MF5770, which took minutes to warm up.

The Canon has done its job reasonably well. I particularly like the scan to PDF feature and used it often. My wife used the networking capability for printing. This OfficeJet takes that to another level. My only setup issue was trying to get the USB and Ethernet connections working. I should have gone straight to WiFi. Unlike the MF5770, this printer can perform all its functions through a WiFi connection. The wireless setup was as simple as possible: just specify the (hidden) network and enter the key. It did the rest.

I was unaware about ePrint and printer apps. Once I learned about them, I became excited and tried them out. They work well on the OfficeJet. With ePrint, I can send prints from anywhere (well, that is on my approved contact list) using my printer''s email address. The printer apps are even better. I printed some games and activities for my children, made some notebook and music paper, and was trying to find even more apps! The only bad part is some apps are not yet available for this model. HP has an ePrint and printer app forum and I am hoping more printer apps are forthcoming.

This printer is still going strong with no issues. I recently needed to print passport pictures and my Epson R2400 was acting up. Short on time, I tried the 8500A with cheap photo paper. The results were actually quite good--good enough to be accepted and on our passports.

I received this printer from Amazon on 12/16/2010 and the box was a little beat up on one side but nothing in the box was damaged. The initial setup was easy and the printer looks great but it went down hill after that. It makes many noises when powering up, just FYI! The ePrint function would not work and finally I had to get tech support involved to try and resolve the issue. After about 45 minutes of checking this and that, it was finally determined by the tech (which was in India, come on HP give some Americans jobs!) that the problem was with HP''s ePrint server. I was told to try again in 24 hours and see if the server was back up. I finally got that working after 8 days but I had another issue, and this is the one that was the worst. If I had to live without ePrint, so be it. But I can''t live with lines in my printouts. I had horizontal lines in every page I tried to print or if I made copies. I did the clean printheads, align printheads, calibrate linefeed, over and over again. I would print the Quality Report and it would still show lines. I removed the ink cartridges and printheads, power off with button held in and power cord unplugged from printer, checked HP''s website for diagnosing the problem and they recommended replacing the printheads after doing all that I had done. Okay, this is a NEW printer and I have to replace the printheads already? Are you kidding me? I am not going to spend another $100 plus to replace the printheads. So, today I finally call HP support because enough was enough and again I get a guy in India. Nice guy and I explained everything that I had done already to this point and he had me try a few other things but it didn''t work. It was determined that the printer has a hardware issue. So, HP is going to send me a REFURBISHED printer at no cost to me provided I get the current one sent back within three days and HP must receive it within 15 days or I get charged for a NEW one??? I guess I could of sent this back to Amazon but then I would have been charged shipping charges and it is an opened product and most of the ink is already used. I don''t know what the charges would of been but so be it and I need a printer. If the refurbished one doesn''t work, then they will have to send me another one until I get one that works without problems...so, maybe I will end up with a new one after all.

Anyway, the printer is fast, makes fast copies, and the scanner is fast. I don''t use the fax, so I don''t know how well that works. I like the touch screen but I do wish that HP had put an arm for support on the scanner/copy lid because it doesn''t have one. You have to be careful with that! Making copies with front and back is pretty quick, quicker than I thought it would be. It''s not a bad printer but HP needs to get the bugs worked out. For those of you who have had no problems with your printer, be thankful. For me, this is a learning experience and this is also my first HP printer. I have always hated their printers and thought they were junk because of places where I worked they had HP printers and they were always breaking down. I have either had Canon or Epson printers but neither company had a printer that had these capabilities. The ePrint is a very nice feature. It''s nice to be at work and be able to print something to this printer while I am still at work.

Would I recommend this printer? Yes, but with hesitation. If Canon, or even Epson, had a printer that had these capabilities, I would have most certainly bought on of those, especially the Canon. I have had three Canon printers and one Epson and I only had to have one Canon repaired and it was still under warranty. I guess the more functions the printer has the more that can go wrong.

I will try to update this when I get the refurbished printer because I would like to let you know the continuing story. So, until next time....

Update...

I got my NEW printer, not REFURBISED, on 1/6/2011 and it works as it is suppose to work. This printer is much quieter, no lines in the printouts. The ink consumption is low and printouts look good. Now I can give it 4 stars but the reason I don''t give it 5 stars is because the scanner/copier lid does not have a support arm. If you are doing lots of photos, then this is not the printer you want. I do recommend it for printing webpages, documents, spreadsheets and any other general type printing. The best thing about it is it''s wireless and the ePrint on this printer worked the first time. Setup is easy and now I have a printer that works!

I sent the bad printer back on 1/8/2011 and HP received it today. Thanks HP for the service and Amazon for the low price!

I have only had this printer a few days, and all I can say is "WOW!" First a bit about purchasing from Amazon.com: It''s over $100 cheaper than at local office supply stores here (I saved $160 including tax), Amazon''s service and delivery are A-1, and the printer arrived in great condition.

Now about the printer: I''ve never had such a nice printer. In draft mode, it prints about 35 ppm, and the pages are very legible. Color copies are beautiful. For a home based business or even a small business, you can print your marketing materials on this and they will look professionally done. The touch screen is great, the set-up was basically plug and play. The fact that it takes two-sided copies for faxing, copying and scanning saves so much time.

One thing that''s lacking: I wish it came with a complete instruction manual, instead of just the fax manual, though.

I love this printer! You should buy one -from Amazon.com!

I operate a small office and the HP 8500 all-in-one printer is the fourth HP printer which I have owned, along with a couple of Epson printers and a couple of Canon printers. By volume, we use about 1/4 of a ream of paper per week. In a broad description, the Epson printers are superior in print quality, but require the owner''s manual to be at hand to determine what the problem is when one of the indicator lights starts flashing.

I have been an HP fan but this printer has changed all that.

Please believe the other negatives mentioned in the reviews. They will all add up to a serous dissatisfaction with this printer.

The challenges with this printer are:

* It will frequently stop in the middle of a print job to check itself. This can take from 60 seconds to a few minutes. This occurs about twice per day. If you are printing a large document, say 50 pages or more, plan on this delay happening at least once and perhaps twice during the print job. When it is printing it is fast, but the overall throughput is greatly reduced by these delays.

* It will error out (all the lights start flashing) and you must power off the printer to reboot. This occurs about once per week and can even happen in the middle of a print job.

* It cleans the print heads far too frequently and can run out of ink (excess consumption) in the middle of the process.

* Like most of today''s printers, it will not use all of the ink in the cartridge before it stops printing until you replace the cartridge.

* When connected wirelessly to a computer it will frequently take itself off-line. It will then refuse to print until several documents have been sent to the printer queue and it decides it is time to reconnect.

* HP''s auto-load software will "crapify" your computer. It is not content with simply being a printer/scanner peripheral, it wants to become part of the operating system. It installs several programs (Windows) which run in the background and slow down the entire system. About 2 times per week, one of the HP Pinter Monitoring programs errors out and must be closed out. Interestingly, this seems to have no effect on the operation of the printer who knows why it is there.

This machine, when it is not doing it''s own thing, is fast and produces good (not great) document quality and poor photo quality. The scanner is excellent, but about 5% of the time the scanner software will error out in the middle of a scan and require the software to be re-launched.

Hopefully HP will correct these programming issues in future models, but the value and performance of the 8500 series is greatly reduced because of them.

I''m not doing an exhaustive review of this printer''s features and specifications...just a summary of items I found when setting it up on our Mac network, some tips and tweaks I discovered when setting this printer up. In no particular order:

>Make certain, as other reviews have correctly noted, that if you want ''all'' the bells and whistles of the HP 8500A, get the ''Premium'' edition, not the Standard or the Plus edition. Other reviews cover the differences better than I want to spend the time in doing so.

>Take a friend with you. The box this thing comes in is HUGE. And awkward. It''s not terribly heavy (though it easily goes 35-40 pounds in the box) but the box is a testament to big, awkward and the carry handles are ''offset'' so there really isn''t an easy way to carry this thing home unless you have space in the car and a basketball players arm spread.

>While not occupying really more of a footprint than any other AIO printer, this one with the second paper tray is very tall. So give yourself plenty of room on where you plan to place it.

>Shame, shame and another shame on HP for giving you only a simple ''Get Started diagram'' (which isn''t too bad but covers ONLY how to get started ONLY). And a fax book. They note that the manuals and such are installed during installation but come on; how hard can it be to include a printed manual for the darned thing?

>You''ll first unpack all of the shipping stuff and there is a TON of it. Foam packing, tape, paper, more tape, and tons of that static cling stuff. The pile after you are done will amaze you. And you''ll keep on finding more even after it''s assembled. I''m staggered by how much protective stuff is on this printer but say that in a good way...better to be safe than damaged. But it shows up EVERYWHERE. Allow 15 minutes just to find the shipping protection!

>The initial calibration is mind numbingly long...20 minutes. And you cannot make it shorter either.

>You''ll basically do the following (in order): Arrive home, unpack everything, take off all shipping protection, install the rear paper guide, install the bottom second feeder, install the print heads and then the ink tanks. Then power it up and WAIT for calibration.

>While it''s calibrating, you hook up a USB cable to the printer and install the MAC software. Straight-forward and no issues there (thank you HP for Mac support!). The Mac OS/X software will install before the printer finishes calibrating but only by about 5 minutes.

>You''ll be asked when everything is done calibrating and software installed if you want to run it wirelessly. Very easy here again, it will recognize your wireless network and encryption type. All you do is enter a password.

>Another SHAME for HP because at this point you''re done with the installation. But will you have the Internet-enabled APPS working? Nope. Will you have the ability to e-print your iPhone''s emails yet? Nope. At this point, I guess HP is figuring you''re finished with the installation but you''re not. You''ll need to do the following (at least this is what worked like a charm for me):

1--Make certain everything is finished. At this point, you WILL have the printer speaking to your Mac network, wirelessly (and wired if you chose that) via Bonjour. Eject the HP software installation disk.

2--Turn OFF the printer. Turn it back ON. At this point, mine went and connected to my wireless network and found an UPDATE and asked me if I wanted to apply it. I chose YES. After I did this, I had new icons on the printer panel, including those needed to install the APPS and other stuff necessary to e-print.

3--Go to your Mac and click the HP Utility icon which should have been installed on your dock. From it you can do all the e-print setup, HP Marketsplash stuff (very rudimentary but some like it) and other setup stuff you couldn''t do when the printer was just being installed.

E-print from my iPhone was my entire reason for buying this printer. I just needed a quick way to print emails from my phone and this thing works like a charm. All it does is forward your email to the printer''s internal email but it works fantastic.

I gave the printer, overall, three stars because it''s really a four star product with a two star (at BEST) setup routine. Windows users may get better mileage on the install but I just outlined EXACTLY what I had to do on a Mac to get it running. It''s stable, fairly quick, slightly noisy, BIG but it does work. The APPS are snoozers, far less than you can do on an iPhone, but the two sided copying and scanning plus the ability to email and print from the iPhone make it worthwhile, at least in my opinion.

Avery Folded Two-Side Printable Clean Edge Business Cards for Laser Printers (5820) Save 29% off

Avery Folded Two-Side Printable Clean Edge Business Cards for Laser Printers, White, Matte, Pack of 120
  • Clean, smooth edges for a professional presentation
  • Folded, two-sided cards provide greater surface area to give your clients key information
  • Extra-sturdy, matte-coated cards feel substantial in your hand
  • Convenient do-it-yourself cards mean that you can make changes to your design as often as you like
  • Design and print from your desktop in minutes

If you are an advanced computer user, you should be alright but anyone expecting to use the pre-built template will be disappointed when they spend HOURS working on the layout for these cards

If the thought of printing on both sides & lining it up perfectly each time makes you nervous, you definitely should not buy this

The Word templates provided for this item were useless in my case & has no instructions

I ended up going to the Avery website, using their online layout tool to make a PDF, then opening that PDF inside Adobe Illustrator and laying my artwork out that way.

It took me hours, and I do this kind of thing for a living!

NOW, I will say the cards themselves are fantastic. Note that they are not Inkjet & Laser -you buy EITHER Laser OR Inkjet. The papers are very different, and my Epson inkjet can''t print on these laser ones -but they come out great when you use them in a color laser.

The edges on these cards are fantastic. Even the pickiest person could not determine that they were from a print-at-home kit (in other words, the perforated edge is undetectable)

Good quality paper, maybe I''ll buy some rubber stamps to print them with.

The templates don''t fill in both sides of the card, I guess you could fill out 4 different templates and print, flip, feed, print, rotate, feed, print, etc. The wizard is worse than the templates. the online design and print is actually decent, when it will save your design, when I got mine right it wouldn''t save, just freezes with a little clock running. One star for the paper, one for the online designer, three more when you get it all to work. I''ll even try to smuggle you in a sixth star if you come up with working templates for Open Office, Libre Office, or Abiword. The templates may be compatible with these other programs, hard to say, since they didn''t work any better in MS Office. Seriously the online design and print seems to be the best tool available, just save early and save often, and try to get it perfect the first time, or you may have to start over from the beginning just for a simple change.

The design printed very nicelysharp and crispon the paper, but the printer kept jamming because the paper wasn''t flat (due to the perforation of the cards). We had something like 10 extra sheets for the amount of cards we wanted to print and in the end had to go buy another pack of paper due to smeared ink related to paper jams. I don''t know that there''s a better product out there, but beware that you''ll need several extra sheets to deal with this issue.

I ordered these to make escort cards for a wedding. I''ve tried other brands and the edges were always ragged and looked cheap. These were clean, pretty much exactly as advertised and they looked great for my use. They are a touch on the thin side for business cards, but as a table top display they are perfect and look really sharp. The Avery wizard is quirky and takes some getting used to, but definitely helps mass produce and can be used to mail merge for a custom job. I''ve already ordered more. Great product.

Canon Photo Paper Pro II, 4 x 6 Inches, 100 Sheets
  • High-gloss and heavyweight photo paper prodcues trule remarkable photo-lab quality prints

Since Canon has changed their paper names all around, with what appears to be overlapping qualities, but not having all sizes in all brands, I''ve tried them all. To be honest, with slight differences in weight, it''s almost impossible to tell the difference. The archival qualities may be different, but I doubt I''ll live long enough to see any accelerated fading. I bought this mostly to use as test paper for larger prints, and especially since it was a great Lightning Deal.

Good product, I''m using a PRO9000 and used Kodak Ulta until I tried this product, not much of a difference so, I''ll stay with the Canon. 4 out of 5 due to not much better than Kodak paper.

This worked perfectly with my Canon MG5220 printer. Colors are vivid and ink dries on contact. Photos are crisp just what I wanted. I used the air print app from my phone and the pictures turned out better than I expected from a phone''s camera. $15 for 100 sheets a good price on Amazon to boot!

I''ve gotta say this paper produces very good results, as long as you are not expecting the very best. This is a good solid 5 star value product that is priced as such.

If you want the very best, be prepared to pay more for it, like the Canon Photo Paper Pro Platinum or another brand.

All in all a good buy if you are looking for very good results. Go somewhere else for the very best results.

I gave up trying to use new aftermarket color tonor as I cannot find a good brand that works consistently.
