HP Scanjet L2706ABGJ 7000 Sheet-Feed Scanner
- 7000 Sheet-feed Scanner; Scans Up to 2,000 Pages a Day
- Scan up to 40 ppm and 80 ipm in Black-and-White and Grayscale, 35 ppm and 70 ipm in Color
- 50 Sheets Automatic Document Feeder with Duplex Scanning
- 2 Line LCD Display and 6 Front Panel Buttons
- Operating systems: Certified for Microsoft Windows Vista; Windows XP Home; Windows XP Professional; Windows XP Professional x64; Windows XP Media Center; Windows 2000
All of this is great, but the user interface is the icing on the cake. Most scans can be initiated on the scanner by a simple selection of a scanning mode from a menu system followed by pressing either the simplex or the duplex scan button on the face of the scanner. This will automatically launch HP''s much improved smart scanning software and execute the scan. Some additional adjustments to the scanned image can be done in the software if desired (such as rotating pages, deleting selected pages, adding more pages) and then the document is saved to where you have chosen in the configuration software. The unit comes preconfigured with convenient scanning profiles, but you can customize these and add your own using the provided software, which will then appear as choices in the selection menu on the scanner. There is also a button to launch the scanner configuration tool. Scans can also be initiated from within third party software such as Adobe Acrobat or Paperport using TWAIN or WIA drivers. This is by far the best scanning solution I have yet encountered.
The output tray has extensions to keep pages from falling off the end or to the side. These are a bit flimsy so most of the time, I just keep the main output tray extended about 3/4 of the way. I only extend it all the way out and unfold the side and end catches when scanning a larger stack of full sized documents (letter or legal pages).
Bottom line: A top notch document scanner that is well worth its price. A joy to use.

HP scan jet 7000 sheet feed scaner is wonderful. It is extremely fast, easy to use and set up.The only time it jams is if I leave a staple or post it note on something I am scanning and that is my fault not the scannerAfter opening the box, I realized that the plastic protection on the cover was removed once and then placed again (not a very neat job). So it looked like I bought a used unit. Or a returned unit that has not gone through an inspection.
I tested single sheets first without problem. When I tested 50 sheets. It failed to feed. (Reason for the first customer to return it?) After trying several times and readjusting the unit, it started to feed crooked. After a couple of hundred pages, it started to worked okay.
Second issue: If you do not load and set the VRS software to post process the Acrobat pdf files, the scanned files are too big (a MB/page at 200 dpi). The VRS software rescans the result into a decent size.
After scanning hundreds of pages, I have not seen a problem with the unit. So it may need some break in before it starts working. I will report if it goes bad again.
It scans very fast in resolutions up to 300 dpi. I like the double sided in one pass feature. VRS post processing is nice also. (But the pdf file cannot be read by Acrobat 5 or below). You need the latest readers.
I would give it a higher rating but the initial experience was not good. It is a good scanner.
Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer
- Personal monochrome laser printer prints up to 23 ppm
- High-quality 2400 x 600 dpi resolution
- Toner Save Mode for extended toner life
- 250-sheet capacity tray
- One-year limited manufacturer''s warranty
I am unsure about real-life cost-effectiveness, since I''ve only had the printer for a few days. I am still using the starter toner that came with the printer. It has lasted through about 250 pages of full text so far. I ordered the high-yield (2,500-page) toner from Staples for $61 including tax. Drum replacement looks to be about $100 every 12,000 pages (every 4 toner cartridges). That says it will cost about $350 every 12,000 pages or so, if the printer lasts that long.
This printer is small and light, and very simple. When it runs out of paper, it gives the red error message. You add paper, press the single button, and it works again. Startup-to-print time is very quick less than 10 seconds after flipping the power switch. I was stunned at how fast pages came out of this little thing (quicker even than the HP 2300 I have in my office). And yes, the lights in my apartment dim when it prints.
I use this with a Macbook Pro over Airport Extreme (it worked! first try!)
I am confident in my purchase. (But not so confident that I waived the $15 warranty option when I purchased from Staples for $69 after rebates!)
2 caveats: this printer does not come with a USB cable (but my $3 USB 2.0 cable worked just fine.) As I said, it only comes with a starter toner, which is supposed to last only 250 pages (mine has lasted exactly that, and no fading yet).

This printer works pretty well, the only problem I''ve had has been a few paper jams. If the rating was based on the printer only, I''d give it 4 stars. But unfortunately the printer will stop working when the toner is supposedly low. Of course, Brother had to make the printer stop working because otherwise you''d see that there was still toner. My printer stopped working after about a week with the "toner is out" message, which was ridiculous. Fortunately there is an easy way out of this scam, simply put some opaque tape on the transparent window area by the gear on the toner. My printer has printed hundreds of pages since the printer stopped working due to low toner....

The HL-2140 printer is a good value. It is fast and fairly quiet while producing high quality prints. I have an HP LaserJet 1022 as well, and this printer seems to make prints of comparable quality. The HL-2140 is fairly space efficient, so it fits on a medium-sized desk without taking up too much space. On the downside, I have had some problems printing some PDF files. The HL-2140 will occasionally print only the first page and the print queue will stop. It is either a problem with the printer driver or Mac OS X 10.5, as I can resolve the issue by restarting my computer. It''s disappointing, but I''m confident I''ll get the issue resolved either by another driver or Mac OS update. And for the little that I paid for this printer, it isn''t a big issue for now.
Also on the downside, the HL-2140 doesn''t have a very robust manual input tray. It cannot hold a stack of paper -you literally need feed one sheet in at a time as it prints. I have tried to print on 4x6 notecards, and the HL-2140 simply gave an error message. I haven''t yet tried printing on envelopes, but I''m somewhat suspicious it will work well. I''ve had little trouble printing on different sized media with HP printers in the past -if this Brother printer can do it, it isn''t quite as obvious or intuitive.
Overall, this is good for occasional use on standard 8.5" x 11" paper. If you need to print on various media or use the manual input tray often, this isn''t the right printer for you.
******UPDATE 11/21/08*******
The issue of printing PDF files using Mac OS X 10.5 has resolved itself. I have no idea how the problem was fixed as there have been multiple updates of printer drivers, Mac OS X, and Adobe Reader that have occurred in the meantime.
I''d like add a point about the manual input tray in response to a post here. In contrast to the HL-2140, my HP LaserJet 1022 is capable of handling several pieces of paper at once in the manual input tray. That is, if I''m printing on a different paper stock than what is in the standard input tray, I can load several sheets and have them securely sit in the manual input tray (though not more than 6-7). The HP printer will print on one sheet from this tray at a time until the tray is empty. This Brother HL-2140 is incapable of doing that -you do have to manually feed one sheet in at a time and stand by the printer to do it.

I needed a second laser printer for my office after my 1994 HP model finally died. I chose this one because it was inexpensive and because I''ve had a Brother 1440 laser printer at home which has been very good. The only downside to the 1440 is that it causes the pages to curl -a problem that many older Brother Laser Printers have. I''m happy to report that there is no page curl with the 2140. I''ve only had this about a week, but so far it''s great. Very simple to set up, and EXTREMELY fast. Note that this machine requires a USB cable which is not supplied, and the supplied cartridge is only rated for 250 pages, so you''ll be spending a bit more money than just the cost of the printer. After a month using this printer, I''m delighted. Compared to my ink printer, the brother prints at lightning speed. And every time I print something, I smile at the money I''m saving.I am a writer but I often prints color photographs too, so I was using color photo printers for years. But in the midst of printing black on white manuscripts, a window would pop up to tell me I had better change the magenta cartridge or risk damaging the machine. I thought the machine might use a touch of magenta when printing black, but when the photo cyan cartridge gave out, I suspected something devious.
I calculated what I''d spent of ink cartridges for the past year and realized I could buy the brother HL-2140 plus enough toner to print 26 manuscripts of 400 pages each for the same amount. So I did.
The installation instructions that came in the box are clear, simple and precise. In ten minutes, I had the HL-2140 printing. But I had two problems.
Printing the same page on both printers, I noticed that the brother does not get the letters as black as the color printer does. Although the sheet printed on the brother is fine, no quibbling, I tried to get a darker print. In "print properties, advanced" I changed the resolution from 600 dpi to 1200, but noticed no difference between the two. I tried using "graphics" instead of "general." That didn''t help either.
Reluctantly I accepted that when all else fails I have to read the instructions. The user guide did not come in my box, but I quickly found it on the brother website and downloaded the Acrobat file. I found the solution is the density adjustment slider, which is not easy to find. Go to Printer/Properties/Advanced/Device Options and select "Density Adjustment" for the list to activate the slider. This option does not work if 1200 dpi is selected or with Macintosh computers. But with Windows at 600 dpi, I could replicate the results with my ink printer.
My other problem was the brother printed last page first, forcing me manually restack the document. After reading the manual twice, I couldn''t figure how to solve it. (Please stop laughing.) Finally, I discovered I had the "Reverse Print Order" box checked in the Windows printer options dialogue. Windows, not the print driver controls this option.
But reading the manual served me well. I learned the brother HL-2140 has an impressive array of duplex print options and other features. This machine is a super good value.

Sharp EL-1801V Adding MachineI was looking for a fluorescent display because they are easier for me to read. This "calculator" operates just like what we used to call an "adding machine". You put in the number, then press the function (i.e., add or subtract, etc. the number), and repeat again for the next number...then hit the total button and you get the total. This unit works exactly like adding machines have worked for many decades (but this one is faster, lighter and smaller than the old machines). Some folks (my wife included) were disappointed because this adding machine does not function as a "calculator". With "calculators", you enter a number, then enter "add or minus" button, then the second number and there is your total. You do not have to tell the machine how to handle each number you enter, beginning with the first number. Even so, this is an excellent printing adding machine. This one is suited for folks who do taxes, business folks who need cost, sell, average, margin buttons because it has dedicated buttons for those functions. It is also great because you can read the lighted display n any lighting situation. On top of that, you get a bonus feature because this machine can tell you how much change the customer is due. You put in the price of the item, subtract the currency the customer gives you, press the blue "change" button at the top left of keyboard and "Viola", the amount of change that the customer should get is displayed.
This machine takes standard size printing paper and prints fast in 2 colors (red and black). You also have the choice of selecting whether or not you want the machine to give you a count of the number of items you have added, plus another button that will add the date (and time) the paper tape was run. It has an internal battery that keeps track of the date and time. The date and time are not constantly displayed, but one press of the "clock/calender" button will give you the date and/or time (after you set it up of course).
The instructions for setting it up are easy to follow.
This is a wonderful device for us mathematically challenged folks. The Amazon 3rd party vendor "Best Source Stationer" (in Monroe, NY) is excellent. Best Source gave me an order confirmation, shipping notice confirmation, and very quick delivery. I highly recommend this product.

The best thing about this calculator is that the buttons are large enough to make totaling up a large number of checks or invoices very quick. I can''t understand those who say this calculator is slow; to the contrary even in print mode it flies. If you want a solid, easy to use adding calculator without frills, you can do much worse than this one.I''m sure it is a wonderful calculator, everything is easy to use, I just wish I''d read better. I had one that I thought was just like this one, however when this one came it is only usable when plugged in. I really wanted it to be battery operated since I don''t use it at a desk. I have always stuck with OEM ink, because the results and reliability are worth the extra cost to me (plus printer manufacturers are making it increasingly difficult to use non-OEM solutions). However, it is beyond dumb to see the combos that Canon is offering for the new line of ink jet cartridges. In this case Canon gives you four color cartridges, but all of their current PIXMA printers take five or six to get the Pigment Black or Gray cartridges you''ll have to buy them separately and at a higher price. Plus this combo includes 50 sheets of paper that not everyone needs (I have plenty already). Perhaps Canon should ditch the paper and lower the list price of this combo by eight dollars the amount this CLI-226 combo was increased over the CLI-221 combo it replaced.
BTW, the other package deal offered by Canon (PGI-225 BK/ CLI-226 C,M,Y 4 Pack Value Pack (4530B008)) is another strange combo that includes Pigment Black and three colors, but does not include Black or Gray.
Sorry, but it makes no sense whatsoever to not offer at least a 5-cartridge refill kit for a printers that needs 5 or 6 different inks except that it lines Canon''s pockets a bit more than it should. A kit that substituted Pigment Black for the paper would make more sense than this or as I said earlier just get rid of the paper and lower the price significantly.
I also have to knock off a star because the new cartridges are opaque, which may have been done to thwart refillers but also prevents users from checking the ink level themselves.
Edit July 2011: When my Pixma MX860 printer recently failed I was looking at upgrading to the Canon PIXMA MG8120 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (4504B002). But in large part due my dissatisfaction with the ink cartridges of the new Pixmas I went with a refurbished Canon PIXMA MP990 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (3749B002) which uses the previous generation CLI-221 cartridges.

Actually ran into a guy the other day who had like 6 of them in his shopping cart and said.....yeah buying the printer for the ink.So, what do you do with all the printers? I could not find this ink anywhere. Back to amazon my trusted vendor. Ink arrived in two days just in time to save myproject. This is good ink its just too small of a container. My printer takes six cartridges of ink. Result is great photos
and printingits just that it uses too much ink to be in such small containers. I have told Canon but they aren''t listening.
So if you buy a Canon MG6120 printer, copier, scanner -get a suitcase of spare ink. This ink tank works in the Canon PIXMA MG6120 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (4503B002). It''s easy to install. The other day I decided to research Canon''s ChromaLife 100+ ink & was surprised to learn that prints made with this ink will last over 100 years!
This ink tank is easy to install in my Canon printer. The ink doesn''t run when it gets wet & the prints should last over 100 years. I''d say those are great reasons for using Canon ink in my Canon printer.
Thought I''d mention that the ink is in a black tank so you can''t see the ink level. I get printer messages that the ink tank might be empty; I don''t replace the tank until my printer won''t print or the print quality suffers.
(Even if the printer shows a ''red x'' above the ink tank, I''ll press ''ok'' to get rid of the ink status message & continue printing. As long as I''m printing text I don''t worry too much about quality as long as it''s readable).
If photo quality suffers, I will replace whichever tank is necessary.

It performs quite well, when it''s working. The quick-scan feature is total gold, I can toss several pages through then walk away and do something else with them while it faxes.
But the toner. Oh, god, the toner.
I''m used to laser printers whining at me on the message display about low or "out" toner, and I''m just as used to ignoring them. The helpful people at Panasonic have decided that they don''t like people ignoring those messages, so they include a pleasant beep. And when I say "pleasant", I mean it gives me nightmares. When the time comes for the machine to be replaced (and it will come, oh yes, it will come), I may run an extension cord outside so it can actually be actively beeping as I go Office Space on it.
Anyway, toner. To guard against the possibility of someone with super-human will tuning out the beeping (or perhaps to guard against the deaf), they also have included a helpful print out. On this print out are several large bars of varying shades, designed, presumably, to illustrate visually to you exactly how low your toner is.
I have never seen this page print in anything but a perfect, pristine manner. The bars are wonderful in their consistency, with nary a hint of lightness. While this would be an excellent demo of print quality, as a notification that the toner is low, I must admit to some confusion. It''s *perfect*. It *never prints light*. So as far as I can tell, the only function it actually serves is to *use more toner*. Quite a bit of toner, considering the large black and near-black bars.
In amusing phone conversations with Panasonic, I''ve determined that either A) there is no way to disable this helpful function or B) there is, but they require a more substantial bribe than I''ve offered to offset their loss in toner revenue.
It gets better.
After it''s printed two or three of these frame-worthy gems over the course of a week, it decides to play hard ball. Now it claims that the toner is gone. Out. No toner remains. This is communicated in two ways. One, the beep. Only this time it''s incessant. The beep just goes on and on until you replace the toner, unplug the machine, or throw it out the window (and perhaps even then). It also...*prints out a notice*. That''s right, you read that correctly; to inform you that there is no toner, it *uses toner*. I''m sure you''ve guessed the best part already this notice, like the joyous banners of grayscale earlier, also prints perfectly. It''s never been even a little light.
Now we engage in a little off-Broadway production for the benefit of the fax machine. "Ahh, pity," we say, opening the machine and removing the toner unit. "We''re out of toner. Guess I''ll have to get more toner. I''ll just open this package over here," we continue, as one of us makes crinkling noises in the background, and the other grimly shakes the toner unit from side to side. "Ah, good, I''ll just pop that in, then," we say, winking, as we remove the toner drum, whisper an incantation over it, and pop it back in. "Whew, good as new. I''m sure glad we don''t have to worry about any light printing thanks to the Panasonic engineers," we shout with glee, as we put the toner unit back in and close it up.
If we''ve said the incantations correctly, the fax machine accepts our tribute and pretends everything is ok for a couple days, when the process is then repeated. Usually we perform the ritual twice successfully before it tires of our blandishments and insists the toner is out, despite the repeated evidence of our eyes. At this point we surrender to its whims and put a new drum unit in.
The drums aren''t *too* bad, price-wise. I just have a minor philosophical objection to tossing them out when there''s still clearly good toner left in them. But aside from that, it''s a worthwhile machine.

I had been hoping to purchase a laser fax machine for two years, having been through the thermal paper and ink-film "plain paper" routes already. When I finally found this one on special offer ($150), I bought it as did another person to whom I recommended it. I am thrilled with the machine. It sends and receives faxes beautifully. It has features to interface with an answering machine should it need to share a line with that machine. It photocopies easily and excellently. The toner cartridge is easy to install and confidential much easier than those delicate ink film rolls required by most "plain paper" fax machines which leave an recorded imprint of everything that has been printed on the ink film-dependent machine. The toner cartridges are inexpensive in comparison to laser printers and personal copiers. All in all, it is a wonderful machine.THIS MACHINE IS AWEFUL. I SPENT $200.00 ON THIS MACHINE ONLY TO HAVE A PAPER JAM FAX, AFTER FAX, AFTER FAX. THIS USUALLY OCCURS WHEN I AM FAXING ONLY ONE SHEET OF PAPER TOO, QUITE ANNOYING AND FUSTRATING. I DO A LOT OF FAXING AND NEEDED A QUICK AND DEPENDABLE MACHINE. THIS WAS NOT THE MACHINE TO BUY. IT TENDS TO GO THROUGH A LOT OF TONER TOO WHICH CAN BE QUITE COSTLY. THE PAPERS I FAX HAVE SMALL PRINT ON THEM AND WHEN I FAX THEM OUT THEY ARE BLURRED ON THE OTHER END AND LOOK SMEARED. THE SPEED IS GOOD ON THE MACHINE AND IT COPIES GREAT. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS MACHINE AND WISHED I HAD BOUGHT ANOTHER BRAND. PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION IF YOU PLAN ON BUYING THIS FAX MACHINE. I ONLY WISH I KNEW IN ADVANCE. Once I figured out that Avery included the instructions for a Dark Tee Shirt Transfer, I looked up the info and tried the Light Tee Shirt Transfer. The transfer comes out quite nice. You really need to use a non-stretchy type of fabric for the transfer to come out clearly and not rip. In other words, a tee shirt from Michaels will work well, but a onesie by Gerber will not. I tested this out on a tote bag, and the transfer looked very nice. I haven''t washed the bag yet, but once I do, I probably will turn the bag inside out so the transfer will not come off.
For those looking to put a smaller image on your clothes/bags/projects, the 4x6 paper is great. Recommended, but definitely look up the instructions before you start!

I read the instructions three times because they didn''t make much sense. Do not reverse the image, no ironing board, no steam, remove the backing before applying??? I did as it said, got to the step where you are suppose to peel the backing off before ironing, yeah right! The sheets are thinner then regular inkjet paper and there is no backing to peel away. I shredded three sheets trying to remove the backing that is simply not there. You can scratch off the image which makes me wonder how you could iron this on face up unreversed without searing the image to the bottom of your iron not the shirt! I was not willing to possibly destroy my expensive iron because of bad instructions. This is the stupidest product ever! The instructions don''t seem to be the correct ones for this product in any way shape or form. It is also strange that the package does not say anywhere that this is for dark fabrics yet the instructions say for dark fabrics and the sheets say on the back for light fabric, WHAT?, very confusing! I would not recommend this product based on what I received. The instructions included make it impossible to know how to use this product.

This photo transfer paper works great. I am not using it for T-shirts, but the wife wanted to start a memory quilt. I took several photos that I had archived and using this paper, printed them from my Canon printer. The iron on transfer to the cloth she is using went perfectly and she is extremely happy with the results. It looks as if I will be ordering quite a bit more of this so she can finish her quilt.First off, the instructions for this product are virtually non-existent. I only got the dark fabric instruction sheet which was not all that helpful in helping me figure out what to do for lighter fabric. The "included" tissue for doing dark fabric transfers was NOT included. Also, on those instructions they tell you to remove the paper backing. The backing does not come off. I wasted a lot of time trying to remove the paper backing and only succeeded in tearing the transfer sheet to pieces.I think it''s fairly simple to figure out what to do, but some instructions would have been really nice. I put the picture face down (do this on light fabric only, on the dark it did not show up at all) and put the iron directly on the backing, peeled the backing off, and there was my image. These are Christmas presents so I don''t know how well they are going to hold up, but they look pretty good right now. That part of the product, I am happy with. But it does look like the colors smear a bit during application, though not enough to keep it from looking good.
If your image isn''t going to take up the whole sheet, you need to cut it out because it leaves a stiff, shiny film behind. This doesn''t matter much on white fabric, but on colored fabric, the less of that the better. You also do need to flip whatever image or words you are going to use on the transfer.
The best part of this product is that the template for this was easily found for free on the Avery website.
