Brother HL5450DN High-Speed Laser Printer With Networking and Duplex
  • Prints up to 40ppm
  • Built-in Ethernet network interface
  • Automatic duplex (two-sided) printing
  • 300-sheet standard paper capacity, expandable
  • High-yield replacement toner cartridge available*

I purchased a Brother HL-1470N back in 2002. It was an excellent monochrome network laser printer that worked well with my Mac computer. I used it extensively. I went thru 3 toner cartridges and 1 drum over the course of the past decade. A few issues came up that I needed assistance on, and Brother support was always helpful. That old printer recently indicated that the toner was empty, that the drum needed replaced again, then it stopped communicating on my network. I decided it was finally time to replace it. Having 3 iPhones and an iPad in our family, an AirPrint capable printer was a must. I checked Apple''s AirPrint support document (Last Modified on July 31, 2012), and was sad that I didn''t find any Brother laser printers listed. I have a networked color inkjet printer already...but I detest spending $$$ on ink so often. I simply needed another workhorse B&W printer that is dependable...one that would help to keep cost-per-page down. I began the laborious task of checking out the many printers that the Apple document indicated were supported, but I wasn''t finding what I truly desired. I nearly decided upon a different brand (one where I would have to install new firmware right out of the box to have AirPrint capability), but then thought to visit the Brother website. I came across a press release dated June 5, 2012, that indicated Brother had just launched a line of monochrome laser printers that supported AirPrint! My new HL-5450DN arrived in no time, and was a breeze to set up on our home network. I was printing from our iMac and a Windows PC in no time. There was absolutely nothing to set up so as to print from our iPhones and iPad...AirPrint simply worked right out of the box, without any fuss or muss. Base on my experience, I highly recommend Brother monochrome laser printers.

I purchased this printer after years of frustration with the typical HP ink-jet woes, such as slow speed, infuriating network reliability, short half-life of ink cartridges, and poor printing reliability, especially with document feeding. After hours of research with the emphasis that my new printer needed to have the advantages of a laser printer (high-speed, high-yield, long-term reliability) paired with the ability to natively print with wireless clients, such as AirPrint on iOS devices, I happened upon this fairly recent release from Brother. All of the early reviews I have read have been very positive, and I can say that my experience over the past month has also been overwhelmingly positive.

Set-up was a breeze, followed the well-written instructions, and after plugging via ethernet into my network, I was immediately able to print from my iPhone, iPad, and Mac, as compared to previously using software to allow AirPrint via iOS on the HP inkjet which required the main computer to be on and connected to the network. Duplexing works great, the document feeder for envelopes worked as intended, and I look forward to a future without inkjet frustrations. Another bonus is that this printer (and it''s bigger truly-wireless brother, the 5470) include a full capacity ink cartridge, not a ''starter'' cartridge. Have already printed >1000pgs without issue. Will update this post after idea of capacity of the toner is more appreciated, but this easily paid for itself as I would have had to replace my previous ink cartridges 3 or 4 times by this point.

Have recommended this to numerous family and friends and happily give it 5-stars here.

To address other reviewers'' points that this is not a wireless printer, I''ll admit it was a little confusing, but the 5450 allows for ''wireless'' printing from devices such as iPad to the 5450 which requires you to connect the 5450 to your network with an ethernet cable. If you desire truly wireless (self-contained wifi) look to the 5470 for slightly more.

Two things I wanted to share about the printer:

1) It doesn''t come with a cable. So you''ll probably want to also purchase a type a male to type b male usb cable.

2) It works fine on linux. You need to download the drivers. Amazon is eating my links, but they are available on the Brother website as debs and rpms.

We were getting sick of constantly buying or filling inkjet cartridges so the purchase of this printer is basically a response to spending too much on ink. Our printing needs are simple but I tend to print a lot.

What I like about the printer:

-easy to set up (doesn''t come with a cable as was noted on other reviews but we had an extra one sitting around)

-fast

-prints duplex (both sides), this saves a lot on paper for me, now I print almost everything that way

-cost the price was $153 when we bought it including shipping, must have been a special because now it is up to almost $200

What I don''t like:

-it is a little loud when it prints, actually this doesn''t bother me but I listed it in case someone is specifically looking for a quiet printer

-the power flickers when we use it, I''m not sure that is the printers fault, though, it could just be the wiring in our house

Overall, great quality and good deal.

Just like some of the other reviewers, my printer triggers the AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker in my home. The AFCI is designed to detect low-current sparks or shorts which can cause fires. I don''t know what the printer is doing to trigger this, but it is 100% reproducible. The first time, it blew the AFCI immediately after it was turned on. I reset the breaker and tried again. It then blinked all its LEDs. A google search reveals that pressing the Go and Cancel buttons together shows the specific error condition, turns to be "Fuser error". Further googling reveals that this occurs when the Fuser does not warm up fast enough, and suggests leaving the printer on for 15 minutes. When I did that, after about 5-10 minutes, the fan (which was running at high speed for 5-10 min) died down, then the printer seemed to try to heat the fuser again. As soon as it did that, the AFCI blew again. The printer keeps blowing the AFCI every time I try to keep it on more than 5-10 minutes. Since all my rooms are protected by the AFCI, I cannot use this printer. Too bad, because the other reviewers seem to think that this is a great printer. I am returning the printer to Amazon.

  • Print stunning color and black text documents.
  • Stay productive-get consistent, reliable printing.
  • Easily replace, reorder and recycle supplies.

HP original toner cartridges contain not only toner but also the drum and corona wire (e.g., the key parts of the duplication system.) I have used laser printers that had these parts separate, and they also work fine, but the replacement process is a bit of a maintenance challenge for the non-technical. Plus, you must be aware of the way these affect the printing and know when to change them. (Of course, if the average user never uses his printer very much, this might not even come up.)

Still the genius of the HP system is that it always works, and always works well--at least many more hours and copies than historically we have ever had the right to expect from a printer. and TOTALLY in a different class than ink jet technology.

So if you want that reliability and error-free reproduction, you guarantee it by buying original HP toner cartridges from HP.

However, the technology is not rocket science. So a good refurbished cartridge can be every bit as reliable as an original, fit exactly the same, and the corona wire and drum can be replaced. However, this adds quite a bit to the cost, and they don''t need to be replaced as often as the toner wears out--anywhere from 2x to 10x less frequently, probably only the people who refurbish cartridges could tell us for sure and it may depend on the smoothness of the paper you use, etc. Consequently, often a refurbished cartridge is going to have had the drum and corona wire inspected, but not replaced. In fact, if used cartridges are available enough and cheap enough they might never reuse cartridges where the drum or corona wire are damaged. Some companies might even have a lower standard than HP--imagine that! They are after all charging less.

So what I do, is a) try to buy refurbished cartridges from as reliable companies as possible, b) always have an original on hand as a back up in case anything goes wrong, and c) only buy refurbished if the price difference is considerable, say less than half.

Also, this particular cartridge is for a very high resolution color laser printer. I''m getting printing-quality copies that are better than what print shops provided some time ago. 3600 dpi in color boggles my mind. I have printing-quality paper (thicker, glossier, whiter stock) for my PR pieces. It looks awesome, and I can print on demand for less than I can order copies (of lower quality actually) from a print shop. I''m not going to compromise the registration of the four toner cartridges and the pristine quality of original toner powder and new drums and wires for a few pennies per copy.

Hence here you see me buying original toner cartridges from HP! (But I don''t always for every printing application. I do buy laser printers from HP whenever possible, because I know how they will last.)

I use the HP MATTE Brochure & Flyer paper (8.5"x11") for making all forms of greeting cards, gift cards and note cards on a Canon Pixma ip4700 and Pixma MP600. Color is great, even on the "standard" print selection, and the bright white jumps out at you when you open the card to reveal the verse inside. It''s also easy to write on with ball point pen, to sign the greeting cards. I love this paper! I see reviews that refer to it as not being GLOSSY but this is MATTE paper, not glossy. I''ve used this paper (Q5445A) from the box shown and from the blue and white HP box and both work the same as far as print color and quality. I always have at least 4 boxes on hand and just purchased another 3 boxes from a seller here on Amazon at a great price. If you''re looking to print photos with people in them, this isn''t the paper I''d recommend. But for outdoor or indoor scenes, it''s great. And for making your own greeting cards, I can''t say enough good things about it!

Want HP Q5445A Matte Brochure and Flyer Paper Discount?

I love this paper. It''s got a great thickness and the end result looks fantastic! There was a review about the lack of gloss to this paper giving it only one star, however I believe they may have overlooked the fact that this is a matte paper and not glossy. I love this and will buy again and again!

I love the HP matte brochure paper and use it for a variety of uses. It is almost as thick as card stock and it works great in binder windows, either as a cover or on the spine. This is much easier to get in a binder pocket than regular flimsy paper. I also use it to print out certificates and anything where a little extra heft is important.

The print quality is much better than plain paper and almost as good as photo paper (although not glossy.) If my kids need to print photos for school, or report covers, they use this to get great quality, but a lot cheaper than photo paper. Plus you can print on both sides.

Xerox Phaser 6500N Laser Printer-Color-600x600dpi Print-Plain Paper

Xerox Phaser 6500N Laser Printer-Color-600x600dpi Print-Plain Paper Print-Desktop-24ppm Mono/24ppm Color Print-250 sheets Input-LCD-Gigabit Ethernet-USBI like this printer. It is replacing a Laser Jet 2600n that is showing its 7 or 8 year age. The printing is great. The price was good ( caveat I haven''t had it long enough to buy toner which can be pricey ). However, ...

The setup process is awkward and not helped by the fact that the only documentation you get in the box is a large ( 19 inch x 25 inch ), multilingual ( 15 EU language ) two sided sheet of paper with diagrams that can be difficult to interpret. There simply isn''t enough text there to clarify what some of the diagrams are trying to tell me. Since I make my living supporting complex software on UNIX and Windows I have lots of experience with interpreting software manuals. Diagrams and hardware however are not my strong point. There are 12 short sentences to give you an idea of what these diagrams are intended to represent. After a lot of comparing diagram to printer, trying to figure out how to open some of the component or get at some of the ports, I was eventually successful. A bit more text and a bit less white space would have simplified this process significantly.

The print output is great. The text is crisp, clean and very true to the fonts that I have run through the printer. The graphics are spectacular. I printed a picture taken on my Panasonic Lumix FZ-40 on a regular sheet of paper. The color match was impressive. It looked more like a professionally developed photo than something printed on regular paper with a laser printer. I did not specifically measure the time taken to print either text or graphics. Text seemed satisfactorily fast and the graphics time was better than the LaserJet 2600n.

The bottom line is that this printer gives impressive performance at a bargain price. If the installation process were better documented, I would rate this at 5 stars. If that is not an impediment for you, consider it a 5 star printer. However, keep in mind that I have not attempted to buy supplies. You are looking at mail order since your average local store is not going to carry toner for your Xerox Phaser 6500N.

Comparing this product to Avery tri-fold brochure paper, this one stands above in most ways. The ease of folding is especially noticeable and lends a much more professional appearance. The cost, however, combined with HP ink prices, makes this unacceptably pricey, except for customized limited run work where you''re willing to invest $0.70 a copy!

I just tried this brochure paper after using the Avery equivalent for about three years. They are very similar, but I prefer the HP brand now. Here are the differences:

SHARPNESS: HP was a tiny bit crisper. Photos were just a little better, but text was significantly sharper. (I use an Epson R320)

FOLDING: With the Avery, you have to hold the paper at just the right angle to see the fold lines. You can only see them on one side, and it folds better if you print the outside of your brochure on the side with the lines.

With HP, the fold lines are easier to see. You still have to kindof tilt the paper to see the lines, but they are visible on both sides. You can tell by looking at the lines which side would work best for the outside of the brochure.

All in all, the HP is a slight winner over the Avery, mainly because of the sharpness of the text, and slightly easier folding. We use trifolds with lots of text and high quality photos in our business, and the HP just looks more professional. To be fair, I do have to hold the brochures side by side to really notice the difference, and if HP quit making this paper I''d have no problem going back to the Avery.

One final note: I have also tried some of the glossy trifold papers and they do not work as well. There is occasional smearing, and the paper along fold lines can sometimes peel a little.

A few years ago I started a cheesecake business and wanted to create my own brochures. I did so using Pagemaker (I''m old school, what can I say?) and then I printed them on my HP C3180 Photosmart printer with this HP brochure paper. WOW, did they look amazing! The colors and text are very crisp and sharp, with my photos popping off the page. My customers were surprised that I printed them myself. They ARE pre-scored (not sure why that one reviewer didn''t think so), and there is definitely a front and back (if you print them on the wrong sides you can still fold the brochure, but it won''t stay closed by itself). I placed images across the folds and they looked excellent on both sides...no ugly splitting of the paper fibers. The quality truly is astounding.

If you have a small business and can''t afford to have a professional printer print 100s of copies, or if you change your brochure information frequently enough, this brochure paper is the way to go. I created my own template in Pagemaker and am a professional marketing consultant who does a lot of writing, layout work and photography, so I was able to do the entire thing myself. But even if you have to hire a friend or a consultant to do it for you, you''ll still be pleased with the end result if you use this paper instead of a print company. Of course, you do have to have a good inkjet printer, because even this exceptional paper can''t make up for a crappy printer. Try a test print of a really nice color picture on cardstock on your printer. If it looks good on that, it will look good on this paper!

HP must have changed something about this paper when they redesigned the box recently. I have been using this tri-fold paper in my Epson Artisan 810 printer for 2 years with great success. Now, all of a sudden, this paper will not feed into my printer. I have tried everything possible and no luck. I even ran a side-by-side comparison with the last of my old stock of this paper....the old stock works just fine and the new stock refuses to feed. It makes no difference if I have the "Thick Paper:" setting on or off.

I am now going to have to find a new paper to print my business brochures because I am certainly now going to throw out a great printer. Very disappointed in this new batch of paper. Returning what is left to Amazon.

Well, my printer just arrived today. Though it took a few days for the order to process, it only took 2-days to ship.

PROS:

This is a nice fairly compact laser printer. It''s easy to set up. Print quality is clear and has nice contrast. When I bought this printer it was only $69.99 with free shipping, but I see now in less than a week later it''s gone up to $89.99 + Shipping costs. For the price I paid I''d say this was a great deal.

CONS, but not a deal breaker:

I would''ve given it 5-stars except for a few points: 1) No USB cable included. It seems to be a fairly common practice with companies these days, but it''s annoying. These cables don''t cost that much (Belkin high speed USB for $4.95 on Amazon) but it''s an inconvenience to have to order it separately. And because they don''t cost much, how much is any electronics company saving vs. keeping their customers happy? 2) The printer is fairly noisy even in standby mode. However, it eventually goes into power save mode when not in use for long and that is completely noise-free. 3) Printing quality, though excellent, is not as good as my 10-year old Brother laser printer specifically when dealing with grayscale. These three points are things to consider, but I do believe they are only worthy of loss of 1-star.

This is a great printer for a small or home office that doesn''t require high-output printing.

After six years of faithful heavy-duty service, my beloved HL 1440 gave up the ghost, and I decided to replace it with the Brother HL 2220, which cost 2/3rds what I paid for the HL 1440 years ago.

Although the new machine is faster than the 1440, with more standard memory, it is smaller, lighter, and feels considerably less substantial.

Set up (OSX 10.4.11) was an absolute dream. In no more than five minutes I was up and printing. The set-up guide cautions to link directly to the computer, and not through a non-powered hub as I was doing, and on top of that my computer only accepts USB 1.0 and not 2.0. Yet the computer and the printer immediately recognized one another, and communication between the two is quick and responsive.

Print quality is outstanding, and although some folks have complained of the noise, I find mine to be very quiet. I do notice that envelopes come through with some wrinkles in the corner, and I''m going to try experimenting with different feed orientations to see if that helps.

Brother has decided to cheap out a bit on the 2220. Unlike the 1440, there is no visual indicator on the paper tray to indicate how much paper is left. Instead you are left with a top-mounted light that will come on once the paper tray is empty, but what good is that going to do you? How many pennies did Brother save by doing that?

I''ve never found a PDF file I couldn''t open, view, and print with Preview, but for some reason Brother''s instruction manual would only open properly in Adobe Reader.

PROS: Dirt cheap. Set-up is a breeze. Great print quality. Relatively quiet.

CONS: Feels insubstantial. Fussy documentation. Some wrinkles in business envelopes.

I don''t regret buying the HL 2220, but I''ve got a feeling I''m going to be missing my old HL 1440.

This is the third Brother monochrome laser printer I have owned. I was really happy with my first two and so when I needed a new printer, I bought the HL 2220 immediately. I wish I hadn''t. There are two serious problems with it. The first is that it is very noisy and it takes a long time (15 minutes or longer) to go into sleep mode. At this point, I simply turn the printer off when not actually printing. The second (and this is more serious) is that it generally does not print an entire document. Instead, it simply stops after a few pages and I have to hit the resume button. This is more than just an annoyance as it only prints part of a page in the first print job before resuming and printing out the document. Thus it wastes a considerable amount of paper. I updated the firmware from the Brother website but it did not help. Frankly, it is not that hard making a laser printer that actually works and I am disappointed that Brother did a poor job with this printer. It does, however, do a nice job of printing text as did all my other Brother printers. I''ll update this if I ever get the problem fixed.

This is a great printer with an even better price. I bought this printer after reading the reviews and figured I would just deal with the ''noise'' if it made any I will say 100% that I don''t know what the other reviewers are referring to. The printer makes a bit of noise when first turned on (assuming to warm up the toner or something) but after maybe 10-20 seconds it quiets down and doesn''t make a peep. I did how ever upgrade the firmware, but it wasn''t making any noise prior to this either. It definitely is much quieter than the HP ink jet that shakes the entire desk when printing now that''s annoying! I would definitely recommend this printer, and would most certainly buy another one especially for simple prints that don''t require color.

Brother also supplies Linux printer drivers for this model as well, available from their website.

Very simple to setup, I didn''t use the drivers that came with it either, I just plugged it in and let Windows (7) download and install everything it needed. I was printing the test page with in 5 minutes of opening the box if that, and wasn''t in a hurry.

What I''m less sure about is whether the cartridges are the same ones sold individually the box states "One HP57 and one HP58 ink cartridge customized for for 100 sheet HP Photo Value Pack". What does that really mean? The part numbers on the individual cartridges (CB267A and CB270A) provided here are different from the standalone part numbers. Might not mean anything, but HP could do itself a favor and clarify this for customers.

Regardless, the value provided by the pack is unbeatable.

I buy a lot of ink as I am a volunteer for a foundation which raises money via donations in exchange for photos. I use this ink and paper to print. While other vendors (even through amazon) sometimes sell it cheaper, with the benefits of Amazon''s shipping free, it more than equalizes the price difference. Furthermore, being an Amazon Prime Member I usually receive it within 72 hours of placing the order simply amazing! AMAZON ROCKS!

The combination makes for an excellent price value -AND it is elible for SuperSaving (i.e. free) shipping.

GREAT buy!

Great deal for the price. The cartridges usually print 130-140 pictures so you''ll get some extra life out of them after finishing off the paper that is included.

  • Subtle grey tonality
  • High contrast with deep, rich blacks
  • Detailed shadows and highlights
  • High maximum paper weights
  • Brilliant colours with dye and pigmented ink

this paper will produce outstanding results for printing from black and white photo files. There is a special coating on this paper that gives the picture a slight bronze cast that resembles results from older wet tank darkrooms. the paper has a slight sheen to it and I use a satin or luster finish paper selections in the printer menu. There are a limited number of custom icc profiles that can be downloaded from inkpress for both Epson and HP printers. I especially like this paper for architectural subjects

  • Easily print, copy and scan.
  • Web-enabled touchscreen.
  • Works with mobile printing solutions.
  • Automatic two-sided printing.
  • Four individual inks.

My previous experience with HP printers included 2 different models. I hoped that the 5514 would give me similar results as the others I had owned, but that didn''t happen. Note when you buy an HP that some models have "black" ink and some have "photoblack". The "black" that the 5514 uses is crappy. Looks kind of reddish black. So, what''s the big deal that HP couldn''t use photoblack? Beats me. Just don''t expect to use the 5514 for all you photo needs.

The HP kind of falters, balks, and tends to go into endless cycles in copy mode. Had to start it, stop it, and repeat this about three times before I could get it to copy. If you''re concerned about having a quiet printer, you better not get this one. It sounds worse than a garbage disposal when you start it up and never gets any better regardless of what mode you use it in.

As far as I''m concerned, HP should give us the 5514 for free. The software is almost pure advertising. Nothing useful. HP used to give you some software (kind of cheesey, but nevertheless, somewhat useful) that you could use for templets. Now, it''s buy this, buy that, on and on and on. I ended up deleting just about all the software they included. I''ve never seen so much advertising come with any product. If you''re expecting this HP to be as good as they used to, forget it. It doesn''t happen.

The setup cartridges that come with it are good for a few pages only. If one of the 3 color cartridges runs out, you''re screwed. It doesn''t allow you to print using the black cartridge only until you replace the empty color cartridge.

I had gotten this printer for free since my sister bought a Mac because when you buy a Mac, you receive a free printer. So this is what I got. But its GREAT! I plugged it in and it''s working superb. I haven''t noticed any problems with it YET. I''ve had many problems with many printers but this one hasn''t shown a sign. I recommend this printer to everyone. It''s simple and easy to work with. It''s also double sided which is a must-have.

Why can''t they make a printer that is good at printing, is quiet, doesn''t continually cycle, etc. Why do they have to jam all this scanner all-in-one stuff in them. I was just looking for a dependable workhorse for the home office. For the price, I thought I could overlook the reviews about the noise. The ink seemed affordable too, compared to my old HP, which had died. When this thing gets a print, it cycles, cycles, does whatever it does that makes noise, and finally cranks it out. Oh, and the most annoying thing is, there is no catch tray for the output sheets. They either fall on the floor, or, if you pull out the extender bar, fall on top of the blank sheets, threatening to get sucked back in as a blank.

The prints are good quality nice and sharp. The network setup was easy. It''s just the actual usage that''s annoying. I would buy something else next time.

Very satisfied with this printer. Replaced an old Photosmart 1100 with it. Much faster. Clear. Easy to set up and get going. Hard to find a "plain vanilla" printer anymore. I do not need fax, or wireless. Of course this has wireless capability, but do not need it. Fits my needs perfectly.
