We''ve been using this printer for about four months now printing invoices and postage for shipments. We loaded up 6x9 heavy catalog envelopes in tray one, 200 full sheet labels in tray two (holds 500 sheets of paper but labels are way thicker) and 500 sheets of standard letter paper in tray three. We assigned the media to the different types of postage in our Pitney Bowes shipping manager and we haven''t had to mess with a thing since.

With 12,500 pages in the toner cartridge and the huge trays it''s a long time between reloads and we haven''t had a single jam, warning or error so far.

We purchased this printer for our work. It comes with two trays that fit 500 sheets per tray, even though the photo only shows the printer with one tray. I was worried that I was only buying the printer with one tray, but I researched it and the product number matched the two tray model. So I was relieved when it was the model with two trays. It is very fast and prints well. Setup was easy. We ended up buying 9 of these printers and it was well worth the money. This printer is a work horse. Was delivered very fast. Amazon had the cheapest price on these printers when I was looking.

I was looking for something that would make a nice note card. but this is pretty thin stock. It is hard to find note cards for laser printers (not just ink stock). it is just slightly heavier than 80 lb paper.

These note cards are not substantial at all. Unfortunately, they are flimsy and unsubstantial. If you want elegant note cards, these are not the ones. However, the are just what I was looking for -blank note cards that you can pass through the printer. I used them for custom photography with OK results. If you want to really impress people, buy higher quality card stock.

This is a good product although I wish a heavier cardstock had been used. These note cards are fine for casual use but are not professional quality. Still, I am thankful that they are available because papers and cardstock appropriate for laser printers are hard to find in stores.

I recieved my order and was shocked to find that the contents looked like it had been run over by a truck!

The package was damaged, and when I opened it, one corner of all thirty pages

was bent. This means that out of the sixty cards I recieved only thirty of them will be suitable for printing.

Brother MFC9325CW Wireless Color Printer Save 16% off

Brother MFC9325CW Wireless Color Printer with Scanner, Copier & Fax
  • Print, Copy, Scan & Fax
  • Prints up to 19ppm in color and black
  • Wireless (802.11b/g) and Ethernet network interfaces
  • High-quality output at up to 600 x 2400 dpi
  • USB Direct Interface

The Positives:

1The machine appears solid and well-built.

2Networking set-up was easy and all of the machine''s functions can be accessed from any networked computer.

3The machine can work as a stand alone Fax without having a computer on.

4Printed text is very crip even in small print.

5The quality of the copies are very good.

6The printing cartridges are very easy to replace.

7The machine is relatively quiet.

8The machine came with great instuctions.

9The software that came with the machine is intuitive to use.

The Negatives:

1Fairly frequently, the machine indictates that there is a paper jam when one tries to use the manual feed. Upon checking the machine, one finds no paper jam.

2In order to remove a paper jam, all 4 toner cartridges need to be removed. They come out pretty easily, but nevertheless it is an unnecessary hassle. (The top has to be opened completely in order for one to be able to pull out a cartridge.)

3There has been an issue in the reviews that the printer could potentially cause a fire by paper jammed in the machine reaching a high temprature and burning.

4Even if one opens the back flap to "prevent" paper folds when feeding and printing envelopes, they come out wrinkled.

5Accessing and opening the back flap and putting a couple of tabs down in the back of the machine in order to print envelopes is a hassle. If you print a lot of envelopes you might want to look at other printers.

5The machine cannot print to the edge of the paper in any direction.

6The instructions do not show any photo papers being recommended for use whereas they show other paper types.

7Photos come out looking a bit coarse.

8No duplex printing.

OVERALL:

A good machine for a good price that has its limitations.

Buy Brother MFC9325CW Wireless Color Printer Now

My printer arrived today via UPS (free shipping, courtesy of Amazon). I lucked out and bought the unit when it was on sale at $329! Actully, Brother, HP and other manufacturers should give these machines away for free because the cost of replacing the toners and drums will far exceed by several multiples the purchase price of the machine over the life of the machine.

It was very easy to set up the machine and "pair" it to my wireless network - you do need a USB cable to "pair" the machine to your computer and the network; the pairing took less than a minute.

I''ve always had HP machines; oh, how I miss my HP color AIO that died after seven (7) years of use. The specs of this Brother is better than my departed HP but the color on the HP seemed better (but the unit cost nearly $800 back then). I''ll have to play with the color setting and use color laser paper going forward.

Printing from my iPhone 4 was a breeze and the photos I printed came out pretty good.

I''m amazed at being able to print from my laptop wirelessly. I have Vonage so I have to keep the machine close to the Vonage adepter for faxing. My home office is actually upstairs and the printer is hidden next to couch in the living room downstairs. I''m going to use my HP LaserJet P1006 for everyday black and white printing.

The HP printers no longer look good; they look bulky and plain ugly. This Brother machine looks attractive and elegant -like the new BMW 3 series :-)

It looks like the price for this Brother went back up close to the MSRP. Even at that price, this machine is worth it.

Setting the time/date on the machine (for faxing) is not as easy as my departed HP AIO. I have to read the user''s guide to figure that out.

I hope the scanner works well and easily -that''s next on my to do list: learn to use that function.

Update February 29, 2012

I ordered 512 MB of additional memory from 1 Arch Computer through Amazon; I should get it in a few days. I wish the machine came with more than 64 MB of memory.

The user''s guides do not do an adequate job of explaining how to use the scannner; I may have to call Brother customer service for this (as I had to for my departed AIO HP). I couldn''t find an option to turn scanned documents into PDF docs that would go straight to my laptop.

Maybe it''s Vonage but I could not fax a 20 page document; I got an insufficient memory error message even though I used the "color copy" to send the fax.

I''m hoping the additional 512 MB of memory will solve my faxing problem.

On the plus side, the color photos I printed came out very nice.

Update March 10, 2012

The fax works very nicely even on Vonage. The extra RAM I added helps a lot. The machine scans the documents into memory and then sends the entire document -very fast. Great for large document faxing.

As for printing photos, the quality of the print depends on the camera that was used to take the photo. Photos that were taken with high quality digital cameras come out very nice; while photos taken with my iPhone 4 come out a shade dark and not as crisp.

Next task to master -learning to use the scanner.

I love it that I can print wirelessly from my laptop, iPhone and iPad 2 -this novelty has not worn off yet.

Update: June 2012

I''m happy with the fax, print and copy functions. I''m still trying to figure out how to get the scan function to scan in PDF mode; I followed the MFG''s instructions and set it to PDF but it still scans in JPG mode and the PDF image/file shows up as blank files.

This color laser printer was a new model on the market at the time (January 2012) and only one sample (at full retail price) was available locally at one of the three office supplies stores around. I remember that I could not find it as "available" in other stores'' websites. But somehow, Amazon did have it --with a $100 discount! Plus 2-day shipping (through Amazon Prime membership)! I ordered it and a FedEx van delivered it on time as promised. Impressive service from Amazon and FedEx!

This Brother printer MFC9325CW is working flawlessly so far in our small office after one month of use, and everyone just seems to be happy with it and expects it to print each time! The initial setup was easy, the performance is excellent, the colors are great, the finished output of printed reports are admired by user/recipients. No paper jam yet. It is a very good replacement to our last laser printer (from another manufacturer) that lasted more than 5 years.

Want Brother MFC9325CW Wireless Color Printer Discount?

We all know how the usual printer scam works. Printer companies offer a low price for their hardware to lock you into buying their highly profitable ink and toner cartridges. Then, their printers complain about low ink and toner levels long before the cartridge is really empty to try to encourage even greater use of expensive consumables. Thus, a savvy user waits until printer quality noticeably degrades. Usually, pulling out the cartridge and shaking it a bit improves performance for a little while, extending the cartridge lifetime. Finally, the cartridge is well and truly empty and it''s time for a replacement.

Brother has developed an innovative and extortionate wrinkle. Not content to let the user decide when the cartridge actually needs replacement, my Brother MFC-9325CW printer locks up and refuses to print until the allegedly empty cartridge is replaced. To add insult to injury, the printer even refuses to print black and white until the user replaces a reportedly empty color cartridge.

After much online searching, I found a write-up at helpowl.com that explains how to reset the toner indicator:

"Push the button on the front of the printer to open the cartridge door.

Don''t remove the cartridges.

Push the Clear/Back button to bring up a reset menu. There are 9 different toner functions (for simplicity, three K''s, three C''s, three M''s, and three Y''s).

For each of these nine functions in turn, push the O.K. button and then push it again to indicate `Reset''. After a few seconds, it will say `Accepted'' and will then display a message that the cover is open.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each of the 9 toner functions.

When finished, close the door and the status bar will be reset to normal with no error message."

By resetting the toner alert in this manner, you can squeeze the last bit of life out of the toner cartridge. Brother sure works hard to make you replace cartridges before they''re actually dead.

Overall, the Brother printer has worked well, and I am otherwise satisfied with its performance. However, I am outraged at the extent to which this Brother printer that refuses to print unless you buy a new toner cartridge, even when there''s life left in the old one. The reset process was hard to find and seemingly designed to deter all but the most determined user. I''m further appalled that the printer refuses to print black and white when the black toner level is fine and it''s a color toner cartridge that is allegedly low.

Thus I''m awarding only one star, and I will be avoiding Brother products in the future.

I''ve only owned the printer for a total of 6 hours, so my review of the printer''s abilities will be short...

Print quality: Excellent (for what I need). Its quick, the quality of the images/text is wonderful (better than my 3 year old Lexmark Inkjet)

Scan quality: Excellent (again, for what I''m looking for). I scanned some artwork from my 2 year old and it looks great. The colors are vibrant and the scanned image looks true to the original.

I haven''t used the fax... and probably won''t anytime soon.

Now, on to setup. Geeze. I am so thankful that I have some system admin experience otherwise there is no way I would have made it through the process. It took nearly two hours! I ran through the Quick Start guide with no issues. The printer showed that it connected via wireless and should be good to go so I installed the drivers (from the CD) and attempted to run my first print job. Printer Status: Offline. Huh?

So, I did some digging. I had to change my IP (manually using the printer controls) from Auto to Static. I then had to create a new Port using the IP address (rather than the name) and change the protocol to raw. I had to set the scanner to use the IP rather than the printer name as well.

Really? This is expected out of the box. I have a simple home network this should not have been so difficult.

Bottom line, I''m still glad I got this machine but I would warn others that you might have to dig deeper than you''re used to and/or comfortable with in order to bring the printer on-line.

It''s not the seller''s fault why the cartridges doesn''t work. Epson has a way of reading legitimate cartridges and gives you a warning prior to printing that it will not work. My mother sweetly bought two sets of these thinking that they''ll help me but they didn''t. The only cartridge that works is the magenta and it bleeds on the paper. I honestly don''t suggest anyone purchase these cartridges, I''m not trying to hurt the seller but it''s really not worth it. They don''t work so you mine as well buy the original. Sorry.

I figured if you get what you pay for then with an average 4 star rating the worst that could happen with these would be that they print lousy copies, which was fine since I don''t have to print quality artwork all that often. Naturally, the first time I used them, I was printing a nice birthday card, however. The colors faded into a weird yellow on one print and one had a big smudge of yellow ink, but the weird faded one was was workable if not perfect. The next time I tried to print, the printer would attempt to print, but only blank paper would come out. I''ve rarely had a problem with this printer in the 4 years that I''ve had it that couldn''t be solved with a nozzle cleaning, but the printer seems to be finished. Maybe I can get it to work again, but I''ve already wasted an hour on it (not including the time it took to write this warning). Buyer beware!

Want 6 Pack Epson Ink Cartridges for Epson Stylus Photo R200 Discount?

For me these cartriges do not provide satisfactory results for my printer, an Epson Stylus Photo Multifunction RX620. After attempting to print a .pdf file with text and photos the results were pathetic: massive steaks through photos, unreadable text, etc. Could not access the ''Setup Menu'' to try to run the Head Cleaners etc. So there was nothing to do but remove all these cartridges and return them.

I searched around a lot to find a less expensive option to the Epson brand ink due to it''s outrageous price. I was concerned with going for the lowest price replacements I found as I didn''t want to just buy junk.

This product seemed like it might be a little better quality with its slightly higher price. What I found was that the electrical contacts on the replacement cartridges were considerably smaller and lesser quality than the originals but enough to work as long as everything was very clean.

This brings me to my next point which is that the fill holes on the replacements were covered with a sticker that needed to be removed, however when I removed the sticker before installing the first cartridge it spilled ink very easily into the the cartridge tray and the trouble began.

After several hours of messing with cleanup and careful installation only four of the six cartridges were recognized by the printer and installing an almost empty Epson cartridge was immediately recognized and the printer would then function.

So if you have more time than money and your very careful with the replacement process the price is very good.

If Epson wasn''t so concerned about their bottom line I would be happy to buy original replacements, but not at their going price.

Lexmark photo paper has consistently produced great results in my inkjet printers. The results are crisp and vibrant, making them just about indistinguishable from photo lab prints.

While somewhat more expensive than generic store brand photo paper, the quality difference in the final prints makes it worthwhile to pay the extra, at least for our family photos and business product pictures.

Ok, here''s a little shout-out for this printer. I''m a die-hard HP LaserJet fan in the office setting, but I picked one of these up at a big box "depot" store two weeks ago $119.99. It''s the 2nd Samsung I''ve ever bought, with the 1st one being about 7 years ago. I was looking for a small laser printer for my home office, and was about to buy the HP LaserJet Professional P1102w for $99.99. But then I stumbled across this one for $119.99. Being $20 more, I was a little hesitant, but a quick Amazon search revealed that the consumables for the Samsung were much less.

So, I bought it, brought it home, and within about 3 minutes, had it unpacked, plugged in, and linked up with the wireless network. It''s not a speed demon, nor does it have auto duplex, but it does print fast enough (19ppm) and prints come out looking sharp. And it''s very quiet it sits in power save mode until you print, then it immediately goes back into power save mode as soon as you''re done. Sure, that slows down the first page out time to about 5 seconds, but that''s a small price to pay when quiet = being able to easily concentrate.

The next day the "depot" store had it on sale for $69.99, so I showed them my receipt and got a $50 credit to my card for the difference. I would have bought it here on Amazon, but I needed it that day to do some work from home.

Anyways, if you''re in the market for a small laser printer, this one (so far) is a sure bet!

[Above is a small video clip of this printer in action]

I got this printer for the amazing price of just $49.99 and it absolutely rocks! Being that I don''t print often, I was sick of having clogged and dried up ink cartridges in my inkjet printer. They cost a lot of money to replace and it just wasn''t worth the hassle. With this Samsung laser printer, I don''t have that problem anymore. Toner particles don''t dry like ink over time so I can leave this printer turned off for an extended period of time knowing that when I do have to use it, the toner display bar wouldn''t mysteriously be cut in half.

Quality

Not much to say on print quality. If you''ve ever seen a printout from a laser printer before, then this printer is right up that alley. Nothing special, nothing fancy. It just gets the job done. Personally, these cheap laser printers are great for printing out reports and other things that contain mainly of words and tables. Of course, it will also print pictures and whatnot but don''t expect it to rival that of black inkjet printers. For that, you''ll need a much more expensive laser printer than this one. For the price I paid for this, it''s worth every penny.

Maintenance

Laser printers don''t usually require a lot of maintenance like inkjet printers unless you have a defective model of some sort. These laser printers can print thousands and thousands of pages before anything needs changing. The best part is, a lot of problems you experience from a laser printer can be remedied by simply changing the toner cartridge. However, this is not true for every printer model. Besides keeping the unit clean of dust and whatnot, I''m just going to let this printer sit on my desk until I need to use it. The bad part to this is I will have no idea whether or not the printer I purchased is defective or not. By rarely using the printer, it won''t undergo a "stress-test" of sort. Other users complain that their printer go bad after only a couple of weeks. That''s a good thing in this retrospect because they at least now know to return it or to fix it. As far as changing toner cartridges go, it''s as simple as lifting the printer cover up, removing the old cartridge by pulling on the handle and inserting the new one in until it snaps into place.

I''m reading users having difficulty setting up this printer on their wireless network. I hardly can believe this because the process is so simple!

1. Run the setup program you''ve downloaded from Samsung''s website or from the included CD. Rather than selecting Install Now, you''re going to click the Wireless Setting and Installation link instead.

2. Your printer will then begin picking up all the wireless connections it can find and display it back to you. Your home wireless network should be in this list!

3. Once you have selected your wireless network, it will then ask for the wireless network key.

4. Next, you''ll confirm the settings. By default, the printer will use DHCP to obtain an IP address for itself. This is OK in most situations. If you want to, you can assign the printer its own dedicated TCP/IP settings by clicking on the Change TCP/IP button in this window.

5. Next, you''ll confirm the printer connection.

6. In the software installation screen, be sure to install the printer driver. You can optionally choose to install the Smart Panel application as well.

For such a low price, I am absolutely satisfied with this laser printer. The printer is so small, you''ll hardly even notice it. I am being dead serious. My desk is already small as it is and so this printer was perfect bundled next to my laptop. For such a low price, I was even shocked to learn that it had wireless capabilities. I now no longer have to power up my laptop first (which would be plugged in via USB) before other computers in my house can use it! They can all instantly print to it.

I had heard about cheap laser printers, but was skeptical. I finally got fed up with the ink jet crap of very expensive cartridges that seem to plug up often.

I read up on Lasers and decided on the Sammy. I avoided HP because the company is in trouble and didn''t want to get stuck with an unsupported printer..

The instruction book was good, but tiny print hard to read. There is a copy on install disk, easier to read. DON''T MESS WITH THE WIFI BUTTON UNTIL YOU READ INSTRUCTIONS OR DO INSTALL PROGRAM...

The WIFI was icing on the cake... Notes on WIFI.

The sammy comes with a AD-hoc connection (no security)just a plug in go set up. I did not use it....

NOTE: VERY IMPORTANT, be sure your installation computer is attached to the network by a wifi connection. DO NOT use a computer that is wired (RJ45) to the router unless you are not using PRINTER wifi connection..

Note: be sure to write down the net security set up from your router to avoid errors before you start. Also NEVER touch the wifi button on the printer during installation process. The install program takes care of that...

My home net is WPA2 personal using tkip+AES. So I installed the wifi using the neat disk installation program.

1. plug in the usb cable and power, make sure the usb cable is tight in the printer end. The usb plug on printer is a bit loose fitting...

2. Turn on printer with paper loaded (do not touch the wifi button).

3.When install program comes up, choose the wifi option to install. DO NOT REMOVE THE USB CABLE UNTIL INSTALL PROGRAM TELLS YOU.

4. The install program brings up available networks. Choose your home net. Do not mess with the AD-hoc networks if they are shown.

5. next install screen is to enter your net passwords. Be very careful of the cap keys...

6. the next screen shows the net values picked up from your router. Jot them down for future ref. If all is well keep going.

7. the program will scan for the printer.

8. when printer is found carefully follow directions to remove the usb cable...

9. Install rest of program (driver and control programs).

After installation, when you power up printer the wifi blue light will blink and when connected turn on solid. No need to touch the WIFI button...

The printer works great. It makes a gentle hum and spits out the completed page before you know it.. What a change from the bang, bang zip,zip slow screeching print of an ink jet. A color laser is only about 100 bucks more. Yeah the cartridges are expensive (~~ 128), but they don''t dry up.

The sammy goes into power saving mode when not in use. The print defaults in light mode to save the cartridge. The control program of printer can change it to a darker mode. The replacement cartridge runs about 50-60 bucks. From what I have read, best avoid off brands...

Windows 7 loves the printer. I had to update the printer list on older win 7 system (button on printer install screen). My win vista worked ok but not as friendly as win7. I have an old XP machine used for taxes. I don''t see any problems. I think I will down load the driver from Samsung. I don''t want the control programs on that computer.

Love my little Sammy, if it runs well, will be looking at a Sammy color in a few months and dump the ink jet junk.

Update: Dec 4, 11..

The printer is working perfectly. The networking is very reliable. It is so nice to be able to print without having to share a printer on another computer, (major pain in the *ss).

It is fast and very quite. Most ink jets sound like a corn harvester...

I do a lot of printing and there is still a lot of cartridge left. Samsung controller program works nice.

I don''t miss color a bit. The printouts are very clear. It prints beautiful black and white photos

from color snaps... I use the inkjets for color when necessary (if the darn ink cartridge is not dried up)... Inkjets make good paper weights and money burners; that is about all they are good for....

I talked to Samsung''s online support about replacement drums for this printer, when I did not find them easily available on the internet. They said the drum must be replaced by their technician. Translation: once the drum wears out, throw the printer away. However the lifespan of the drum is supposed to be 30,000 pages, according to Samsung. Chances are, it will last somewhat longer, unless they have a "replace drum" light, like Brother lasers have, that mean the printer will simply stop working after a while.

There is toner to refill it yourself, but you have to reset the chip. The toner company I usually buy from recommends a new cartridge after reusing one three times, but new cartridges seem to come only filled, from what I''ve been able to find, and those are pricey enough that I would rather buy a new printer at $60 than buy the cartridge. I see a compatible cartridge for just a dollar less than you would pay for a new printer.

So these are some considerations when buying this printer. It would probably be an excellent deal for someone who isn''t printing huge quantities. Or it might do for you to buy three or four of these printers at this price.

If you''re having trouble with setting up the wireless on your Mac, read this:

First, run the software that comes with the printer to set up the wireless settings on your printer. Then go into System Preferences > Print & Fax, then add a printer by clicking on the "+" button on the bottom left of the printers list. It should show up as Samsung ML-1865W Series and should say "Bonjour" under "Kind". Click Add and your done! You now have a wireless printer working with your Mac.

Not a bad product just not the right size. Maybe list on the packaging, which holder size best fits the inserts. Was a bit nervous that they wouldn''t arrive on time but they did.

I used these for name tags (Avery Pin Style Top-Loading Name Badges) at an event for a Fortune 50 company that was attended by upper-upper management. Avery has templates for their different badge sizes on Microsoft Word super easy to print. Just make sure to practice printing so you know for sure which way the printer will print on the sheets two different printers printed two different ways for me.

I purchased the name tag holders separately and needed some additional name tag inserts. In the past I tried a cheaper brand and that was a mistake. Thus I went back to Avery since the inserts fit the holders exactly and the printing comes out much nicer.

Brother HL4570CDW Color Laser Printer Save 20% off

Brother HL4570CDW Color Laser Printer with Wireless Networking and Duplex
  • Up to 30ppm color and black printing
  • Automatic duplex printing
  • Wireless 802.11b/g, 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet and Hi-Speed USB 2.0
  • Up to 2400 x 600 dpi resolution
  • USB direct interface

The Brother HL4570cdw is a fantastic printer for everyday and office use. This is my first Brother purchase. I''m using it to print out full colored brochures (graphics, photos, and text). So far it''s been more than adequate when using the appropriate paper i.e. glossy paper. When on regular paper, the colors are not as sharp and pictures are not as clear. For photos, the resolution quality is acceptable/good, but there is a noticeable difference in quality from a print shop and a heavy duty office printer (you know the 5 foot jumbo printers).

As for print speeds, from start to finish it prints at an above average pace. The spooling process is quick (less than 2 minutes) for a 80 mb print job. It printed a 60 page, full color (vivid mode), double sided booklet in about 8-10 minutes.

PROS

Easy printer and wireless Setup (less than 5 minutes).

Good print speeds (auto-duplex and straight printing).

Excellent print quality for general graphics and text.

Good photo quality when using the right paper.

Acceptable noise level for a printer

Toner replacements are cheaper than HPs, Lexmark, and Canon.

CONS

Printer reads toner as empty when full. You must do the toner trick which involves covering the clear holes with black electric tape on the toner cartridges as a temporary solution. For a more permanent solution, you need to reset the computerized toner levels on the printer. You do this by 1) Opening the printer door 2) Holding Back and Cancel at the same time 3) A menu to reset the toners pops up 4) You hit Okay to reset.

I printed approximately 900 full color pages with the "starter" cartridges it came and some cartridges are already visibly running low. While the prints were on the high color (vivid) settings, it is a shame that this printer appears to be another "toner hog" and did not print to the 3000/1500 page estimates the cartridges claim.

Photo prints are poor when printing full sized photos on regular paper. For best printing results you need to use specialized glossy paper.

Must use "multi-purpose" pullout feeder tray for specialized paper or else risk paper jams

Very slight paper curl

Noise level maybe too loud for a quiet office space.

I compared the Brother HL-4570cdw''s print quality extensively with HPs and Canon color lasers in this price range, and the Brother printed out more impressive looking demo prints than its competitors. The print quality is enough to merit the purchase of this printer and because the toner replacements are relatively cheaper than other companies the Brother HL-4570cdw receives my recommendation.

Overall, I''m happy with this purchase and would recommend it if you get it for the right price. I would not pay more than $400-$425 for this machine which is the price I paid.

I hope the one message I can get out to everyone is that printers are one of the most undependable machines that anyone can look to purchase. I run a home business and I made the mistake of spending well over $1k a few years back for a Konica Minolta 5430DL. It was a beauty of a printer, but shortly after spending nearly $600 in replacement cartridges the printer started falling apart.

What I learned is that even the priciest printers break. This is more of a disposable technology than something you can hand down to your kids. When all the printer companies play the game of selling printers with limited ink cartridges and then charging you more than the printer itself for refills, you know that the only way to come out ahead is to buy the best bang-for-the-buck printer with the expectation that it''s only going to last a few short years.

I believe the Brother HL4570 is that kind of printer.

For $400 I knew I was buying something mid-range. It would certainly be a step down from the $1k Konica Minolta but at least the value of the printer is close to the value of replacing cartridges. This means when I finally deplete the cartridges I have the choice of buying more cartridges or another printer -whichever costs less.

I chose Brother because I wanted a wireless printer that played well with Mac. If read on counteless discussion forums that more than any other brand, the Brother is the easiest to install with a Macintosh computer.

Those discussion forums were correct. The wireless setup with my iMac took less than 10 minutes to complete.

...but I am getting ahead of myself.

Bought this printer when it dropped in price to $399 from $450. Had it shipped Amazon Prime 2-day and Fedex delivered it overnight. It''s rather heavy, weighing in at about 65 lbs. The unit is well packaged. Be sure to read the quick-start manual for important unpacking instructions. There are a lot of doors and drawers that you need to access and remove small pieces of packaging.

Once unpacked and plugged in, the first step was to pair the printer to my WiFi. A small LCD display lets you navigate through a setup wizard that automatically detects your WiFi network. The next step is simply inputint the password which is a bit of a cumbersome process as you have to wade through rows of characters till you get to the numbers and letters you need. Frankly, that part of the setup seems very old-school. Brother could have really improved upon this process. Be aware that as you enter each number and letter of your password that character quickly turns to an asterick to hide it. Don''t be confused by what the printer is doing.]

Once the password was entered the printer immediately paired to my network. No hiccups whatsoever.

The next step was even simpler. I put the install disc in my iMac, run it, and it automatically installs the drivers and detects my printer. Never have I ever been able to pair a printer to my Mac or PC this easily. It really is true -this printer is Mac''s best friend.

I decided to do a test page which is done simply by pressing the GO button on the printer. It didn''t take long for the printer to whiz into motion and produce a page.

Two immediate problems: First, my room stunk of toner. This thing put out a stench that I could not believe. I had read another review from someone complaining about the smell this priter produces. Fortunately, it seems, the stench was only present at the initial print. I am hoping that the printer is just breaking itself in. I will keep you posted on future prints.

The second problem is page curling. Pages come out curled. I am using 30 weight paper which should be less prone to curling. I understand there are adjustments you can make in the computer to lessen the curl. I will certainly look into this and keep you posted.

Print speed and quality is very good. Black text looks very crisp but colors are not true to original. I had read in another review that this Brother printer produces darker versions of the original color. This is true. Oranges were deeper, light blues became dark blues. Potentially, I don''t see this as a major problem -but some who are more finicky about their printer producing true colors will not be happy.

I won''t even talk about photos. Haven''t tested photo printing because I already know it will look like garbage. You don''t use these printers for photos and anyone buying it for that use is foolish.

Is the printer loud? Somewhat, yes. But realize that I am coming from a monstrous Konica Minolta machine that was even louder than this Brother. So, for me, the printer is quieter than the more industrial sized machines I have been used to.

Thus far, I am very impressed with the ease of setup and immediate pairing to my WiFi network and iMac. I mean, I had this running in less than 15 minutes after full unpack.

As for overall quality? It is what I expect from a $400 laser printer. It''s speedy with highly acceptable print quality. However, it''s not on par with business class machines. It suffers from subdued color reproduction, colors are slightly darker than they should be and pages curl.

The machine awakens from sleep and produces a page in less than 10 seconds. This is great. My Konica Minolta would wake from sleep and go through a minute of two of machine "whirring" until it decided to spit out a page.

For $400 this doesn''t seem to be a significant step down from my $1k Konica Minolta business class computer and that''s why I am not complaining.

You can read through countless reviews on Amazon hoping to get the right printer. Every single one of them has a handful of bad reviews and complaints about breakage and toner cost. I found the Brother, particularly this model, to be the better rated printer in its price range. Certainly toner replacement will be a little cheaper than going with HP.

UPDATE

The stench I was experiencing with print jobs has lessened, though there is still the slightest odor of print toner whenever I run the printer. I am hoping this subsides with age.

Went into PRINT SETTINGS on my Mac and selected REDUCE PAGE CURLING. It did very little to curb the problem. This printer still produces curled prints and that''s the only annoying issue I still have with this printer.

In all, the Brother 4570 is probably the best color laser printer in the $400 range. Certainly a better option than purchasing an HP which comes with limited-filled toner cartridges and (from reviews I have read on Amazon) its own set of headaches.

I purchased this in November 2010 and have had for 5 months. I wanted to give it 3.5 stars, but Amazon doesn''t allow half stars. While the purchase price was a VERY good value, the price of the replacement toner and insistence of the system to force you to replace the cartridge even when they clearly still contain ink is very frustrating.

PROS:

1. Reasonably priced for a wireless color laser

2. Excellent color documents

3. Relatively fast

4. Prints double-sided

5. Wi-Fi

CONS:

1. VERY expensive refills. I don''t print that much and all 4 cartridges have run out in 5 months. The replacement cost for the 4 cartridges is $200. Because it''s a relatively new model, it doesn''t appear there are options other than to buy genuine Brother Products.

2. The printer just stops working when it deems that the toner cartridges need to be replaced. The documents I printed the day before looked great and so I can''t believe all 3 color cartridges are fully depleted of toner, but Brother insists they must be replaced to get the printer to run again.

3. The pages curl up at the ends.

4. It won''t print B&W or gray-scale in PowerPoint 2010 even when selecting that option (Brother told me to call Microsoft and have them re-write PowerPoint software to fix this problem, which a complete blow off of a customer).

5. It works great with a PC, but won''t print color photos from a Mac (they come out B&W and won''t size correctly).

6. A little noisy but not too bad (don''t plan to have a phone conversation via a speaker phone or headset if you''re sitting within 10 feet of the printer while it''s printing)

UPDATE as of 11-July-2012:

I just ordered 4 new high-capacity ink cartridges (the TN-315 model) yesterday (for $85/each x 4 = $340), which is the second time I''ve ordered high capacity cartridges in the ~20 months I''ve had the printer. This is after using the regular-capacity cartridges that came with the printer when I purchased it in November 2010. I can''t say exactly how much printing I do, but it feels like I''m filling the paper tray about every 4-6 weeks and so it''s not a lot. At this pace, I''m spending ~$350 per year on ink.

After searching the web I found a work-around to the problem I mentioned above, which allows me to manually reset the ink cartridge counter so that it will continue using the cartridges until the ink actually runs out (the only downside is that I need to look to see when the ink stops printing a specific color and then replace the cartridge). Overall, I really like the printer and would give it 4 starts at this point.

I purchased the Brother HL4570CDW printer to replace an HP Business Inkjet Networked/Duplex printer that I had owned for 8 years. I did not want an all-in-one printer nor was I interested in printing photos. I merely wanted a work-horse to accommodate all of our b/w and color printing needs. The Brother printer fills the bill. It is so fast, even in duplex mode! The Energy-Saver feature is great. It powers off after 3 minutes of idle.

For $9.69, you can upgrade the memory of the printer with an additional 256 SDRAM. The folks at Brother recommend the Kingston memory module sold on Amazon.com -Kingston 256MB DDR2 SDRAM Memory Module 256MB (1 x 256MB) DDR2 SDRAM 144pin KTH-LJ2015/256. It is easily installed via access to a side door compartment. After installation, you can navigate to "Print settings" on your printer LCD Panel and print the page, to make sure it shows the increased RAM size.

I love this new printer. The ease of setup was great. I didn''t even have to follow the printed directions or CD. I simply went to the Apple web site and downloaded the most recent drivers. Apple OS did the rest of the work. In mere minutes, I had USB/Wireless/Ethernet connections for all of my desktop and laptop machines, including a PC.

A manual is included that does a good job of explaining features, but they are also quite intuitive.

The machine itself is sturdy and well-built but be warned that it occupies a fairly large footprint. For me, this was not a problem because my previous printer was also large and this one actually occupies the same space more efficiently. The printer measures 16"W x 18" L.

Amazon offered the best pricing on the Brother printer plus the bonus of no shipping charges/no tax. The printer requires four separate ink toner cartridges that each cost >$100 but Amazon sells them for $47-$80. Note that there are two versions: regular and extended use. The 310 series is regular and the 315 series is extended use, which accounts for the difference in pricing. This printer has all of the features that we needed -duplex, network capable, and color laser with decent reviews.

I had a good out of box experience installing the printer on my peer-to-peer network so that the printer could be shared by all family members without any particular computer being online. I''m no IT expert but everything worked the first time and that''s worth something.

The machine was packaged and protected well. It took some time to carefully remove all of the packing material. I think that''s good. It''s a heavy printer and you don''t want to damage it in shipping.

If you appreciate Borg design you''ll love this printer.

It works, and that''s that. I''ll have more to say about toner usage later.

Kudos to Brother for a great OOBE.

It''s been a little while and I am still very pleased with this purchase. I do not find it to be any more of a toner hog than the HP Laserjet 5L that I replaced. I DO NOT recommend printing photos with this printer, it''s not quite suited to that application in my humble opinion, I still use my HP Photosmart 8750 for that.

I suspected this would be the case and I proved it today. I have this printer connected to my wireless router with a cable. We installed the drivers today on a laptop while it was wired to the network. We chose the Wired Network option for the installer and let it proceed as normal. When the installation was completed, I removed the wire and allowed the laptop to continue accessing my wireless network. It was able to print over our wireless network to the wired printer NO PROBLEM. This is great. Now, all our house computers are guaranteed access to the shared printer which runs its own print server software.

Very, very pleased with this.

It''s been about 6 months and I now have some toner life information. I print regular text-based and some printing from web pages. I have the 4 computers that access this printer set for Toner Save Mode, and only 1 computer set to Not use automatic duplex. We do not print photos on this printer as a rule although there may be some minor exceptions.

Just got a Low Toner warning on the Cyan cartridge and printed off a summary of approximate remaining life:

BK 45%

M 30%

Y 30%

C 15%

These are the standard cartridges (2500 pages for Black, 1500 pages for the rest of them). They will be replaced with the extended cartridges which are a better buy.

A total of 721 pages have been printed, but about half of them are Duplex, which means, twice the toner, so for comparison purposes, think about 1100 pages worth of toner.

We all know that manufacturer numbers for toner life are in effect "inflated" since no one prints what is used for the testing and certification or we''d get the same results. If average numbers were specified, users would see both plus and minus the averages depending on their use. And the product would be forced to sell at a lower price. I''m pretty sure Everyone gets Lower numbers.

That being said, I consider the toner life to be in the ballpark, not too bad, and as I said before, commensurate with the printer that was replaced.

Cheers
