Epson Presentation Paper MATTE (S041070) Save 21% off

Epson Presentation Paper MATTE
  • Matte coated, single-sided ink jet paper with a smooth finish
  • Perfect for newsletters, proposals and flyers with photos
  • For colorful graphic images and razor sharp black text
  • Guaranteed to work with ALL ink jet printers

I used this in 8 1/2 X 11 format when it was called Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper. It is thin, only 4.5 mil, and seems light, but for a page with text such as scrapbook page within plastic covers, it works great. For individual photos, better to use Premium Presentation Paper Matte which is 9 mil (45#) at 50% higher price or even their Ultra Premium at 10.5 mil and 104% ISO at another +50% higher cost.

I read the reviews but put more weight on the higher star ratings than the lower, I guess, and I was wrong. And at 25-cents a sheet it''s not a very good value, either. Nowhere is the weight of the paper given, so I''d just assumed it was at least 20#, but it''s much thinner than that. It''s also a rather dull paper, not "white" which is not a big problem just an observation. I''ll use this because it''s here, but will probably use standard 24# 11x17 copy paper for most of my printing (posters and such) or buy from a local print shop. This is much too thin to use for handouts, however it will be fine to mount on poster board for school projects.

I''ve used this for larger photo prints for posting on the walls, etc. The paper is

thin. You must handle it carefully so it does not crack the coated side of the paper.

If you do that, you''ll get quite decent color photos out of it. I use other Epson

photo papers as well. They''re thicker and produce really nice colors. And they

cost over twice the price of this paper.

I really like this paper for the almost poster size prints I can get for an inexpensive

price. However, you''ve got to handle it carefully. It''s thin and the coated side

needs to be kept intact before printing.

I give 4 stars for the price / quality quotient and plan on using this paper for quite

some time.

Want Epson Presentation Paper MATTE (S041070) Discount?

This paper, although stated as a good quality paper is not good for presentations.

The fact that it is VERY think makes it very easy to be damaged.

The slightest movement of the paper when placing it in the paper feed slot can easily dent

the photo. If you are looking to print stuff that you do not really care about so much than

this paper is for you. If you are looking to print photographs that you may want to look good

than DO NOT USE THIS PAPER. Use a 5 star rated paper. I have about 100 pages now of paper that I

do not want. The box states that this paper is thick, but it is not. And when comparing it to other

papers the Premium papers are much better and more worth your money to buy.

While this paper is not top of the line in terms of thickness, for large format prints where super high quality or long term display are not required, the value is unbeatable.

Fair disclosure: I''ve had this printer up and running for less than 48 hours. But the early results have been so incredibly good, I felt a review was in order. If you, like me, have been on an endless search for an AIO that actually worked as advertised and could hold its own with minimal compromise vs. more task specific printers, then I believe your search has ended with the 990.

Setup: A+. I have two Macs, one a PowerMac G5 running 10.5, the other a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, both on my Airport Extreme (simultaneous dual band) network, and setup was about as close to plug and play as you could get. Just BE SURE that if you''re running 10.6, you download all the latest drivers from Canon''s website. The software CD packed with the printer is not updated for Snow Leopard.

Wireless Performance: As noted above, connecting to my home network was a snap. I''ve had no dropped connections over two days. Now, I''ve never had a problem printing wirelessly in the past, but scanning wirelessly and reliably? Forget it. At least, until the 990, which worked flawlessly on both machines from the first scan. You''d swear that Apple, and not Canon, had designed this hardware/software solution. Pop in a document, click scan, choose which computer you want to send it to and you''re done.

Printing Quality: A. Superb quality on both black text and color graphics, and all reasonably quick.

Photo Quality: Haven''t gotten into this yet, but professional reviews posted thus far indicate that the photo printing performance is excellent.

Scanning/Copying Quality: A. Scans and copies are incredibly good. Haven''t tried negs or slides as yet.

Ease of Use: A. If Apple designed its own printer, this is how it would work. An amazingly intuitive interface.

I''ll post an update after I''ve put it through its paces a while longer, but it''s a definite 5 stars out of the box. Thanks for taking the time to read this review--I hope you found the info useful in helping you make a buying decision!

Update as of 10/16/09:

The Bad News: Within 2 weeks of posting my review, this printer has dropped in price by $100! Oh well... that''ll teach me to be first in line to buy a new model! :-)

The Good News: I rated it 5 stars at $299 and I still think it''s every bit as good as noted in my review. At $199, it''s now a steal of a deal as well.

UPDATE AS OF 12/7/09

The professional reviews are now coming in for the MP990, and they''re raving: Computer Shopper gave it a 9 out of 10, and gave it Editor''s Choice, stating that they had a hard time coming up with any "cons" for their conclusion. I remain totally satisfied after two months of use.

UPDATE AS OF 4/3/10

So, 6 months after purchase, do I still think this is a 5 star printer? Well, yes and no. The printer performance remains every bit as good as previously described. But the ink usage has been another matter. While I''ve owned a variety of other inkjets, this is my first Canon, and I feel it penalizes you more than other brands for light usage. After printing perhaps 2-3 dozen pages with color on them--and I''m talking very moderate amounts of color and no printing of photos--I''ve just had to replace all five color cartridges at a cost of $50 at Amazon discount prices. Do the math and you realize that this is a huge cost-per-page, driven by this printer''s all-too-frequent automatic cleaning cycles of the print cartridges, which use up large amounts of ink whether you''re actually priniting or not. Of course, all inkjets do this, but I feel this Canon takes it to a whole other level that just seems like a blatant cleaning of your wallet. That said, if you print color regularly, the ink usage may well be on par with the norm.

I am running an old G4 as well as an aluminum Powerbook, both on Mac OS 10.4.11. I have owned the MP990 for about a month and I thought it was time to start my review. I will follow up as I explore the different features. I spent more than 14 months researching printers, scanners and all-in-ones before I bought this unit. I will try to explain my rationale so that this review can be of help to someone who likes to know everything about a product that they can before they buy like me. I had a bad experience with my last Epson RX600 which just up and died on me one day. The Epson always seemed to get clogged again and again unless I used it very regularly. I have a laser printer that I print most of my text docs to so the Epson was too finicky for me. I was dissuaded from Canon printers and AIOs after reading many of the previous complaints about older models, the bad chip issue with the first generation ink cartridges, the dreaded U150 error that so many of their models displayed. The fact that Canon printers require you to replace an empty ink cartridge before you can use the scanner is in my opinion a major strategic flaw in their marketing plan.

I have printed about 60 4x6 prints and 4 8x10 photo prints so far with this printer as well as a few text pages using the starter cartridges. My grey ink cartridge has just displayed the "!" warning that it is getting low. The other cartridges are soon to follow except the Pigment black cart which is quite a bit larger and is used more for text printing I believe. This confirms others'' statements that you should stock up on grey ink carts as they are the most difficult to find and you go through them fastest. Amazon usually has them in stock. When my grey cart goes empty I will confirm whether or not the scanner and copy functions are operable or not and report back.

Installation and setup of the drivers on my Macs was uneventful and printer setup was simple, you just have to think about it a minute and proceed slowly following the directions; I downloaded the latest drivers and application installer from the Canon website and got the unit operating on Ethernet in short order; I connected it to the Ethernet hub I have connected to my Airport Extreme and so far have confirmed connectivity from my wireless laptop via this method, I have yet to run it through it''s paces though and conduct relative speed tests between Airport and built-in wireless. I did not setup the built in wireless in the printer so I can''t vouch for it''s function yet. I did confirm that so far I have not been able to make the scanner function work via Ethernet connection using the Photoshop ''Import'' plugin nor from the Canon "Solutions Menu" software utility, but after I connected a USB cable then I was able to use the USB plugin and got some nice reflective scans. Still exploring the available Canon color profiles to find an optimal profile for converting RGB scans to CMYK. The Canon 8800f scanner was my alternate choice if I was to go with a separate scanner and printer option. I felt good knowing that the same scanner element is used in this highly rated scanner as they use in the MP990. I would tend to trust Canon''s optics over Epson''s in any case. I am very glad though that I did not go with the separate component option and get the HP Photosmart 7560 along with the Canon 8800f. I saved myself some serious deskspace as well as money and I am not disappointed with the quality overall of this device at this point.

Plain and simple, this printer provides stunning photographic images, especially if you use Canon Photo Pro II paper, the best of them as per my research. The Canon has a 1 picoliter droplet size, smaller than the comparable Epson Artisan 1.2Pl droplet. I can''t imagine getting better photos from another printer at this price; they are lab quality and as good or better than what you would get at any of the drop-off places. Copying works nicely via the nifty front panel display which is colorful and easy to read but the printer can take a bit long to prepare to copy or print before it actually does it. Definitely not ''instant on''.

My only issues so far with this Canon technology is the Easy-PhotoprintEX software that is installed. The good part is that the interface allows you to choose and select multiple images from multiple folders on your hard drive and batch them into one big "saveable" print batch job. The bad part is that depending upon the processing options you select (smoothing, noise reduction, ''Vivid Color'' enhancement, layout et al) the software has to process and create a single print file for all of your selections in the batch before it will even start printing any photos. This may take a while because the software is PITIFULLY slow. Canon''s software developers may be better at building software drivers and interfaces for Windows but the Mac suite is well-intentioned but frustrating to deal with. Better to make your batches smaller. Easy-PhotoprintEX does appear to automatically select the appropriate color profile for the selected paper and results from Adobe RGB 1998 files are very good. I will be playing more with printing directly from Photoshop as both RGB and converted CMYK.

To sum, so far I really like this printer/scanner even with the software issues and occasional inexplicable machine delay. If anything goes awry and/or I discover anything really cool about this MP990 I will let y''all know.

12/22/09: Confirmed that I can print from my laptop wirelessly to the MP 990 using the ethernet driver via Airport Extreme connection rather than by the printer''s built-in wireless. Print speed is quite acceptable.

12/31/09: 1st Grey cartridge ran out after approx. 75-4x6 and 12-8x10 prints were done. The printer allowed me to finish printing the current job by pressing the OK button. When I pulled out the cartridge it was indeed completely empty. I am pleased that the chip on the cartridge is correctly reporting ink remaining status since I was concerned about that after all the previous bad reports in that regard. My magenta cartridge will be the next to need replacement.

3/5/10: After printing a few large technical manuals that used a lot of ink and then not using the printer for a few days the print head station for the Pigment Black tank got hopelessly clogged up. I ran the deep cleaning cycle 6 times or so and that used up more than 1 full cartridge tank and it still would not open up. I called Canon technical support, got connected to an english speaking person in Chesapeake,VA within 5 mins or so and within 10 mins of being on the phone with the guy and cleaning the pool of ink out of the print head, he stated that the print head should not be this clogged up after only a few months of use. He is sending me a new one on warranty. This should resolve the problem but I will let you know. Canon was prompt and professional on the phone and they did the right thing. I can confirm though that printing black text documents uses all colors of ink. I will likely need to replace most of my ink cartridges when the new print head arrives. Cleaning the print heads uses a huge amount of ink but the driver software fortunately allows you to clean only the pigment black station alone if you want. Did a few scans over the past weeks and I like the scan quality very much. Duplex printing is slow but it works. Canon software still slow and annoying.

This is my first review of the Canon PIXMA MP990. On first look you kind of get the feeling your looking at a small tank and it feels like it when you lift it up. The setup was easy thought at first it was a little daunting to see all those ink cartridges and a print head to put in. The print head went right in and was easy, just slid in and secure with a lever. It took a few minuets to make sure each ink cartridge was in the correct slot and seated correctly so the light on the end came on. The one place things could go wrong here is a piece of plastic that twist that covers the ink port on the cartridge that might break in the wrong way if you don''t follow directions. The one Doh!! moment I had was when I turned it on it kept indicating a door was open and I just couldn''t see it at first. There''s a very small door inside the print just under the printer platen that must have pulled down when I was taking all the tape used to secure the printer. So then it was all set up and I turned it on. It whirred away for awhile priming the print head and going through multiple diagnostics till it was ready. It had some special paper just for the setup that almost felt like thin cardboard that it used for the test print, they have some special instructions for it in the documentation.

I''ve got mine set up so my XP machine is connected with a USB connection and I have a WiFi connection to my Vista Laptop down stairs. I don''t have my router password protected (shame on me!!!) so it wasn''t much of a test setting it up to connect the laptop to it. You do have some special software you need to load on the remote machines so it can see the printer and also scan to it but that wasn''t any issue setting up.

So far I haven''t really done much printing on this machine put I have noticed that only after printing a manual of around 60 pages, one 8 by 11 B/W photo, and a couple of smaller 4 by 5''s that the colored ink is already down by a quarter so I''m guessing it uses up ink fairly fast, time will tell. The black ink so far is showing no usage. So I can''t say much about usage but the color of the photos is very good using both the Canon paper and some cheaper photo paper I have.

For the scanner so far I am very impressed. Looking at the build quality through the glass you can see that the scan head runs on two steel rods while most other multi printers I''ve taken apart just run on a plastic track built into the floor of the scanner. I do highly recommend that you use the Mp Navigator EX that comes with the software. I''m not sure if it was just the old Paint Shop Pro 8 software I was using or you can only see the higher scan settings in the EX software but I could only see 1200dpi in the Paint Shop software and I can see 4800dpi using the EX software. For color photos it looks like 600dpi is as high as I can get while with slides and negatives you can go up to the 4800dpi. So I guess if you want to do 1200dpi for photos you would have to use a separate software. It does though recognize the edges of the photos and will scan them separately. Using the special setup for the slides was a little puzzling even with a diagram as it took me awhile to realize I just had to take the film holder out and lay the rest of the holder back on the platen matching up the hole with the pin on the side of the platen. There is a separate lighted platen under the large while backing that comes off that lights up when you tell it you are using negatives or slides. I was amazed at the scan at 1200dpi how well one of the larger 35 millimeter slides came out. I printer it and it looked like a regular photo. I even took a magnifying glass to it and could hardly see any pixelation.

Well that''s about all I can think of right now, I''ll try and keep this updated as I use things or any issues come up.

I have professional scanner and printer but did not need all the equipment i had so i decided to get this one not before reading everything i could and checking personally this baby. i was so surprised it is by far the best all-in-one there. the quality of scanned pics and the copies you get from this one. you will save all your pics and get rid of the originals.my negatives have more than 20 years and still i was able to get the pics look better than the positive original ones. dont be fooled, get this all-in-one, follow instructions step-by-step and you will be using it in about 20 minutes, and once you start using it you wont stop till all the pics are digitalized. no noise, no waste of ink or paper, just the perfect equipment for a semi-pro. you can use this as copier, printer and scanner, it is y far way better than fax machine. Instead of faxing a document just scan it and email it. i give you my word, you will love not just this all-in-one but your pictures. you will look at then in a different way.i hope you have great time using it, as i do using mine.

I''ve owned my Canon Pixma MP990 for nearly three months and finally decided to post a review. I''ve owned HP printers as well as Canon Pixma models MP780 and MX700. The MP990 is by far the best printer I''ve ever used. From some of the comments other reviewers posted, I can''t comprehend how we can own the same model printer and have such different experiences.

Setup was a breeze. Contrary to what one person posted, there''s no need for a USB cable if you''re configuring the MP990 to work in a wireless connection with a Windows PC. In order to ensure I had the latest driver and other software, I downloaded them from Canon''s website rather than use the included CD. This was the first time I''d ever used a wireless printer with my PCs; the process to get everything operating properly couldn''t be any easier.

The MP990 is quiet, reliable, and I really like the large LCD (especially after using the tiny one on a Canon MX700). While none of my Canon printers have a problem with jamming, the MX700 sometimes pulls sheets of paper in crooked. No problem of any kind with the MP990. Photo and text quality are superb. I was amused by another reviewer who complained how it requires strong fingers to remove the orange plastic caps on Canon ink cartridges. I''m a petite, middle-aged woman and have absolutely no problem snapping off these caps (neither should any reasonably bright child). The MP990 doesn''t have a fax capability. Considering how much trouble my MX700''s fax feature caused with my phone''s answering machine, I''m glad there''s no fax. With the use of e-mail attachments, I rarely need a fax capability these days.

My sole objection to the MP990 is Canon''s decision to use substantially smaller ink cartridges in this model compared with my other Canon printers. While these cartridges hold less ink, their prices aren''t any lower; funny how that works. Also, the MP990 uses a gray ink cartridge which no local store carries. Since I buy ink cartridges from Amazon that''s not a problem for me, but it''s a good idea to keep a supply on hand since the gray ink cartridge is very difficult to find in stores.

Prices for the MP990 seem to fluctuate greatly. I paid $169 with free shipping; I''ve seen them on Amazon for as low as $148 with free shipping to as much as $275. Assuming you buy one at a decent price, I think the MP990 is an outstanding printer, especially in a wireless network.

I have used this product for many years to do transfers using hand sanitizer (alcohol based products). It worked wonderfully. The product has recently changed and the results are more than unsatisfactory. Just wanted to let people know that if you plan to use this for transfers the results are not what they use to be. If anyone knows of another brand that works well for transfers please let me know. I have tried many and this was, by far, the best.

This product also just does not produce as good of quality inkjet transparencies as it use to. They just don''t hold the ink the way they use to. They are very faded. Even on glossy photo printing settings the images are banded and off color. I have also had problems with curling. Several boxes that I have received of this product were so curly it would not feed through the printer correctly.

I purchased these because they were priced right. I used them to make gesso and gel photo transfers and they worked great. In fact better than some more expensive transparencies.

This is not the same product that was carried by Amazon a while back. I''m sorry I didn''t buy more then. I also do gel transfers with this material and it simply does not work. The images are faded and greenish when transferred. I hope we can get the old stuff back because this is awful. My star rating is a -1 star.

I bought the whole set before needing them all, so initially when I used yellow and black, things were printing fine. In the past month with the replacements of magenta, cyan, lt. magenta and lt. cyan, print color quality diminished rapidly. I just did a nozzle check and found lt. cyan to be out of alignment. After a head cleaning found 2 other colors out of alignment. During the second head cleaning the printer decided that it wouldn''t recognize the black ink cartridge anymore. I am now unable to print at all. If you don''t want to deal with the hassle, just buy the EPSON refills.

The "except" is the reason for a 4 star instead of a 5''er; the ink runs out more quickly than in competing remanufactured products. However, this is a trade off for the reliability of the Epson cartridge, (not to leak and that the print heads seem to stay clean for the run of the cartridges Not having to clean them also saves ink , so we are happy enough for this trade off. Also, finally the price is competitive with other brands ''. The rating should really be 4.5

Avery Two-Side Printable Clean Edge Business Cards for Inkjet Printers, Matte, Ivory, Pack of 200
  • Clean, smooth edges for a professional presentation
  • Two-sided printing provides greater surface area to give your clients key information
  • Extra-sturdy, matte-coated cards feel substantial in your hand
  • Convenient do-it-yourself cards mean that you can make changes to your design as often as you like
  • Design and print from your desktop in minutes

You expect Avery products to be outstanding and this is no exception. I have generally used their Avery''s Laser cards and was reluctant to use the InkJet cards because of previous problems with a competitor''s product, specifically, a film coating and poor seperation of the cards. Neither was a problem with the Avery cards!

I now have color cards, print quality is great even with photograpic images. Seperating the card is quick, easy and the result is outstanding if not perfect.

These worked out very well for me when I decided to create personalized business cards. The paper is stiff like what business card should feel like (unlike some card stock at Michael''s craft store that I tried using), a concern I had before purchasing this Avery product. The Ivory color is very subtle, something hard to detect without comparing a bright white piece of paper next to it. And the printing results from my Canon Inkjet printer on high quality setting were outstanding (no bleed through showing on the other side of the card).

When punching out the cards, it was quick and easy (directions are printed on the unused border of the paper for your convenience) by just folding inwards along each edge of the card. I understand a little how they accomplished such clean edges, which I can explain later on. But I was pleased with the end result clean edges with no fray strands and all the cards were perfectly the same shape. One caveat with this type of clean edge solution is that you must use a printer that "feeds" in paper from the rear tray. Most printer have the front loading tray (or both) but loading from the front will bend the Avery paper in a "U" shape, causing your cards to bend and mostl likely the clean edges to "punch out" inadvertently inside your printer. I highly recommend loading only from the rear tray (or top loader) since its mostly a pass-through design.

I designed my business cards with the help of Avery''s online tool at avery, com[slash]templates. For this product you can enter 8876 to get a template that you can customize online (even save it to their website after registering) and download the finished design as a pdf file for you to print it at home directly on these sheets. I know MS Word 2010 also has built-in templates just for Avery products (and so does MS Publisher 2010), but the online tool was easy and robust for my needs. Avery has a FREE downloaded program that you can also use, and downloadable templates for other products such as Adobe Photoshop. If you can''t find a 8876 template, 8871 is the same size and will work too.

Hope all this info helps. I had a good experience with this product and will probably choose this solution over other options (I was considering online orders from Shutterfly, com). Just be careful how it is loaded into your printer and it should be successful.

.

PS. As opposed to the micro-perforated version, this one has actual "cut lines" across all the edges of the business cards to create the clean edge. I say in quotations because the cut doesn''t actually go all the way through the thickness of the paper. The "cut" is entered from one side, and is just enough that you can "snap/break" the cut similar to breaking a graham cracker in half. Only thing is that it can only snap/break from one side, but it works perfectly.

This is a good product; however, for some bizarre reason Avery only offer Ivory in quantities of 200. It is far more economical to purchase 400 or even 1000 cards at a time. The exact same style of card in White is available in 200, 400, 1000 and even boxes of 2000. What''s up with this? Ivory is now as popular as White. It was frustrating searching for the product in vain. I finally called Avery (whose call center is in the Philippines) and was told Ivory only comes in one size. I hope Avery reads comments and gets the message! I encourage others to request this product in larger quantities, as well.

Finding a reasonably priced all-in-one with duplexing, wifi, AND good support for OS X is no easy task. I''m very happy I came across this printer.

I''ve only had this unit for about a month, but so far, it''s fantastic. Quieter than the Brother printer it replaced, and unlike that old printer, two-sided print jobs don''t come out all curly. The document feeder on the top works well, too. Best of all (for me, at least), OS X users can access all the scan functions from the network. A lot of networked all-in-ones have pretty anemic support for Macs, so this was a very welcome discovery.

My only gripe is that I don''t think the device supports direct faxing from networked computers on OS X. I''m pretty sure the unit can do this in Windows, and manual faxing is obviously still an option. But "printing to the scanner" sure would be nice. Luckily, I bought this guy mainly for the scan and print functionality, so this limitation isn''t much of an issue for me. Heavy faxers (is this still a thing?) may want to look into this, though.

If you''re looking for a laser multifunction device with wifi and duplexing, the Samsung SCX-4729FW is definitely worth a close look.

Looks great, and it''s a pleasure to use. But keeping it fed is a lot more expensive than Brother models (MFC-7460DN and MFC-7860DW).

Samsung supplies could cost you $120 to $2,000 more than Brother supplies over the life of the printer (see below). Samsung tries to keep third party toner supplies off the playing field, and it hopes you won''t do the supply-gouge math.

PROs and CONs relative to the Brother MFC-7860DW -

PROs:

Nice appearance: Tasteful, refined. Looks like quality.

Fan noise does not continue for several minutes (vs Brother).

OKs:

Clunk-a-chunk printing noise is about the same as Brother

Control panel folds out for easy use while standing

I calculated toner consumption based on the price of their high-capacity toner, which they claim is rated for 9,000 pages. Don''t believe it. The "low toner" indicator comes on at around 5,000 pages, and the printed pages look fairly washed out by then. By 7,000 pages, the printed pages look too washed out to even read anymore, even with lots of toner shaking.

This is with copying and printing text documents, many of which do not take up the full 8.5x11 area (e.g. photocopies of driver''s licenses).

There are a few other minor problems. The network drivers consume a lot of resources and are a bit squirrely. The document feeder frequently pulls through multiple pages at a time and is difficult to unjam. Mostly, though, the main problem is toner capacity. Based on the claimed toner capacity, I calculated that this printer would have very low per-page costs compared to other printers. In practice it''s not nearly as economical as I thought it would be.

This is a great machine for the money. Warm-up speed is quick and when it begins printing, it prints fast and quite. This machine is great for a home or office environment. The scan to email function is superior to all of the other multi-function machines I''ve owned. The scanning software minimizes the number of trips you need to make to the machine, so if the printer is in another room, you don''t have to run back and forth a bunch of times. The duplexer in the printer works flawlessly. What else can I say, it''s quiet, reasonably priced, fast, and has great print quality.

I did run in to a significant installation problem during setup. I set this machine up on 5 different computers. Everything appeared to go fine during the install, but after I shut down 2 of the computers at the end of the day and started them up the next morning, Lexmark''s scanning software completely locked up 2 of them and would not let the operating system boot up. Since I didn''t need scanning capability on these two machines, I ended up starting them in safe mode, removing the scanning software, and everything worked fine after that. I never called Lexmark''s technical support to see if they had a fix for the problem.

After reading all of the hype about this printer, I bought one in 2011. Since buying the printer I have been through 2 cartridges and I am currently awaiting a new cartridge ordered from Amazon. This printer requires a bit of finesse. The network drivers are the issue. At least 5 times I have spent over an hour with Lexmark on line and on the phone. This printer comes with lifetime customer support, and let me tell you they are good, seriously good. they can take over your computer, and have everything up and running in no time. Although I have had alot of issues with the network drivers, they have always been able to get me up and running. From changing routers to modems, they have always been able to help.....the biggest issue was that the printer kept on changing IP addresses, meaning it kept getting lost on the network....so I fixed that with a permanent IP address, customer service helped. This was why I had to call twice. The best thing about every issue is that Lexmark customer service fixed the issues and added new software. The problem is the software and not the product. Another issue was scanning to pdf directly from Adobe Acrobat; initially the system would not scan from Acrobat but would allow me to use the scan center software sending it to Acrobat. This is just annoying but a work around. Instead of trying to match everyone elses drivers in all programs, they decided to have one scan center and push everything from their software to other programs. Not a bad idea and it always works. This is a work around and over time I had adapted.

The thing I hate most is getting up to push a button every time I scan, painful. I should be able to click and scan but if there are numerous people scanning, this allows them to dictate who and when.....this is a home office product, not a 50 person office product. The other issue that cannot be worked around is the toner and cartridges. I think toner usage is not what is should be especially when you talk about how many pages you should get and no one ever gets the high level of production from any of their cartridges, this appears to be just false advertising----

All in all this has been a workhorse for me. I waste alot of ink and paper so maybe I should not complain about toner but it seems to fall short on toner but as far as function, it works and it works well. My experience in computers is not novice and if you think it is plug and play network printer, forget it. Buy an HP for plug and play. I actually like how complex this machine is but I understand that it prints quickly when you have a new toner cartridge and gets slower as the toner runs out. I have to shake the current toner every couple of pages to keep it printing nicely.

If you are experienced with networking, know how to find work arounds and learn new ways to use their Scan Center, this thing is a great office companion. The scan to email and scan to program function works flawlessly AFTER the network drivers are working. If you cannot get the network up and running correctly, just keep it plugged in. This will save you hours of pain. It is a love and hate relationship. The comfort of Lexmark service for the life of the product is second to none. This is definitely the best part of the product. It is odd no one mentioned the technical customer support. Obviously. many of the other purchasers should have called them before writing such horrible reviews. I am sure they can help most people get things up and running. All you do is give the control to them and it''s all fixed.

I purchased this Lexmark X264dn MFP for my home office because I needed a B/W printer, copier, scanner, FAX device (I use a dedicated HP color laser jet printer for all color printing). What amazed me about this product was amazon''s PRICE which included free delivery (given the weight and bulk of this MFP this is not to be underestimated). Given this price, and Lexmark''s reputation (we use Lexmark professional printers/copiers at work) I decided to purchase it.

My observations after three months of daily usage :

Printer/copier :

straight forward operation, excellent quality. Automatic duplex feature is very nice and saves paper.

I have had not problems with the ADF or the paper tray, i.e. no jamming whatsoever.

Scanner :

once you learn how to use Lexmark''s "scan center" software, it is a straight forward operation saving scanned images to MS Word documents. The instruction manual is not very explicit about this and could be greatly improved

FAX :

getting the Lexmark X264dn to SEND FAXes is reasonably straight forward. However,

getting it to RECEIVE FAXes requires some work. For starters, the instruction manual is WOEFULLY INADEQUATE describing the FAX features; it contains no explanation whatsoever about receiving FAXes.

After I searched around on Lexmark''s customer support web site I found several technical bulletins that explain the settings for receiving FAXes that have to be configured correctly (I use a single phone line with a separate answering machine which is the most tricky set-up). After some trial and error I was finally able to get the FAX modem to recognize FAXes AFTER the answering machine

has answered an incoming phone call.

If you want to receive FAXes, be sure to read these technical bulletins first; it will save you much time and frustration.

Bottom line : a decent MFP with a very attractive price, instruction manual is

inadequate for receiving FAX operation

  • Works with all inkjet printers
  • 75 4-by-6-inch sheets
  • 220 g/m2 weight, 8-mil thickness
  • 97 brightness
  • Resin coating for quality results

Just purchase Kodak''s Premium Picture Paper at the local electronics store and am satisfied with the results. I use the paper with a Canon i560 and even though it is not on the same level as the sample Photo Paper Plus Glossy that came with the printer, I am still impressed.

Liked: Price was right, pictures were sharp and colorful.

Disliked: Paper is not exactly 4X6 but actually, 4X6.5 for what reason I do not understand. Borderless printing is not borderless when that half-inch is still white.

Recommendation: go to the Kodak web site and follow the settings recommendation for you specific printer, your results will improve greatly instead of using Canon''s software.

Brother MFC-8870DW Wireless Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer

Brother MFC-8870DW Wireless Flatbed Laser All-in-One Printer
  • A built-in 802.11b/g wireless interface
  • Automatic duplex (two-sided) printing, copying, scanning and faxing
  • Print and copy at up to 30ppm
  • Ethernet, High-Speed USB 2.0 and Parallel interfaces
  • 1200 x 1200 dpi Laser Printing

This was my third Brother MFC printer. I was trying to replace my current MFC9600 that has been been excellent for more than 5 years. I wanted the duplex functionality, the better print quality, as well as the some of the additional features.

And you better believe it, this machine is IT! Faster faxing, faster and better quality scanning, faster copying and printing, better quality prints and copies, and many more very beneficial features that I really liked. being technically savvy, it was a breeze setting it up as a wireless printer without using the Brother wizard in the CD. So, after a quick setup, I was able to complete all my tasks wirelessly...

I was very pleased with my purchase. Everything was actually perfect until I tried printing on an envelope. The first time I printed on an envelope, the result was a completely wrinkled envelope. Then I tried again, and same result. I thought that I could survive with a wrinkled envelope anyway. So, a week later, I tried again. This time, I kept getting the message "Check Paper Size". After a few calls to customer service, the problem was still not resolved. So, I decided to return it to the store.

Printing on an envelope is a show stopper for me! However, I will check back again after a few months. Hopefully Brother will fix this issue so I can buy this printer again.

Yes! I have to admit it! Except for the envelope issue, this is the best printer on the market.

Oh how I wanted this, I like brother printers and a wireless one that supports OS9 OSX, and Windows too, USB, wireless, or ethernet wowee! Then I opened the box, does not do wireless with OS9. Oh well, then I plugged it in and every UPS in my office chimed and the lights flickered when I turn it on. Yep, even plugged straight into the wall, this room heater uses 9.1 Amps, and I bet 11 when it first powers up. So, this just won''t work in an average home office we have 15 amp lines a few computers, a TV, a radio, a light, and that can add up to 7 amps add this fax machine and pop a breaker. I never got a chance to test it, but it sure sounds good. If you have a 20-amp circuit, or can dedicate a 15-amp circuit to it, I''m sure it''s a great machine.

Well, I tried it again, put it downstairs in a room with no other computers and

tried the wireless option. Ok, I''m keeping it! On my main wireless laptop, it

works great, my other wireless laptop in the same room as the monster

Brother MFC it works for one time, then stopped working. So I used a

USB cable on that one. My 3 other OSX machines in other rooms work great

printing to it wirelessly, so, most of my computers can print, scan, and fax,

wirelessly to this beast. So, I''m going to keep it, as it sucks less than an

amp when it sleeps, and it copies and faxes and scans wireless access,

really well. I think it was the hassle of returning it that made me try again.

And the laptop that won''t print wirelessly to it, well, PCs are PCs, some

don''t work for some reason, it''s an older laptop, my workhorse one works

fine.

I bought this printer from Costco and got the wireless feature for the same price as the non-wireless version with a rebate. It''s works extremely well. It''s very fast and the quality is excellent. I was unsure whether I needed the duplexing feature but since I have it, I use it all the time and am very pleased that I opted for this model. No, this machine cannot print on envelopes. Don''t even try it. I don''t need this feature so I can get over it. I print on labels instead. The Brother software is easy to use and works well. I love being able to scan into a pdf document or email directly from a scan. The auto document feeder works very well. I have no complaints other than the envelope problem. I defintely recommend this machine. It does everything I need, very well and for a very reasonable price.

I was considering purchasing a $7,000 reconditioned "floor model" Canon copier (that would have required adding a 20-amp electrical line at an additional cost of about $1,000) when a friend suggested that I look at the $600 (MSRP) Brother MFC8870DW.

I was pleased to find that the quality of copies made with the Brother multifunction unit is comparable to that of the Canon copier and superior to a floor-model Konica that I had used for some time.

As a copier and printer, the MFC8870DW is not quite as fast as its bigger brothers from Canon, Konica, etc., but it is fast enough for my purposes.

The Brother copier will not make 11x17-inch copies or copy on 110-pound card stock, both of which I need to do at times. However, for the difference in price, I can go to a copy center once in a while.

I am quite pleased with the PaperPort 9.0 SE software that is bundled with the copier, notwithstanding the very negative reviews for the current retail version (PaperPort 10) posted elsewhere on Amazon. I use it for enhancing (page de-skewing, removal of stray dots, and otherwise enhancing and printing multi-page docunent stands).

PaperPort has difficulty straightening pages that include drawings with prominent diagonal lines, for example, but I believe that any comparable program would have the same problem. It provides a simple method for manually straightening crooked pages, however. It also leaves more "stray dots" than it removes, and manually removing them can be tedious. However, it''s my understanding that this is the state of the art at present.

PaperPort also provides a means of compressing large scanned files (to less than 10% of their original size) with no loss in quality that I can detect, and removing, replacing and rearranging pages of multi-page documents, and converting files to PDF format. It also provides some editing capabilities for PDF files. For many casual users, it will make the purchase of Adobe Acrobat unnecessary.

Properly installing PaperPort did require a 10-minute telephone call to Brother''s customer support, but overall setting up the copier and installing the software was relatively painless.

I have owned the copier for about six weeks and have made more than 12,000 pages of copies and prints. To date I have used the the TN550 toner cartridge ( rated at 3,500 copies) that came with the unit and two TN580 cartidges (7,000 copies each). Obviously, I am getting about 70% of the estimated number of copies per toner cartridge.

The estimated capacity of a toner cartridge is based on average 5% coverage, which is the industry standard. I assume that my pages have somewhat higher than 5% coverage.

The DR520 drum unit died last night at 11,926 copies. It is rated at 25,000 copies, and it lasted for about half that number.

However, since I have purchased remanufacured toner cartridges from Meritline and a reconditioned drum unit through Amazon from Itonerink, my cost per copy is still below estimates based on Brother''s estimated life of these products and the cost of new toner cartridges and drum units.

I have used the MFC as a scanner, printer and copier and am well pleased with its performance. I have not used it as fax machine, nor have I tested its wireless capabilities. (I have a large number of documents to scan, and I have been told by various IT people that wireless scanning simply doesn''t work very well on any machine.)

This model includes true PostScript, which is a necessity since I use many Adobe PostScript fonts.

I don''t often spend money on extended warranties, but because of my high volume of printing and copying, I purchased one from Brother. Brother offers oneand two-year warranties in two flavors -"depot" (you take your copier to an authorized repair depot for repairs during the warranty period) and "replacement" (Brother sends you a reconditioned MFC, no questions asked, and you return the original MFC in the same box. Brother pays the return postage.) I purchased the two-year replacement warranty (which begins after the one-year limited warranty expires) for $138.

The Brother MFC-8870DW does everything I need it to do and then some. Given the rich feature set, the price is quite low. Given the lightweight plastic feel of the paper drawer and small input rollers I have some concerns about the build quality of the paper path (but we''ve had no problems at all with it so far). There''s no end of flexibility about how you can hook it up and make it do all the many things that it does:

* fast laser printer with fine resolution and duplex (automatic print on both sides) capability. Enabling duplex by default saves a ton of paper.

* fax machine with a ton of flexible receive options to make it coexist with answering machines on a shared line and other methods (including a well behaved manual mode).

* digital sender for network fax servers including RightFax.

* connection flexibility with network printing, faxing, and scanning (yes, to PDF too) via ethernet as well as local via USB, and wirelessly via WiFi.

* stand alone copy machine w/50 sheet automatic document feeder

* did I mention that in addition to document scanning (with OCR) it does color scanning too?

The workstation on the network are all running WindowsXP so I can''t comment on other OS support but the included software is well behaved and feature rich. You can initiate scan jobs from the workstation, for example as well as print, fax We''re into our 4th month with it. My wife has printed out several copies of her dissertation on it and the page count is several thousand and we haven''t even had a jam. Our old Brother laser printer (a 1040) still runs after 8 years. The unit sure feels lightweight and plasticky. I wouldn''t put this into a high volume environment but for my home office it''s killer and I''ve been so happy with it so far.

Follow-up June 2008 8 months later. Unit has been perfectly reliable so far. No jams or any trouble of any kind so far.

Follow-up March 2009 17 months later. Still perfectly reliable. Still never had a paper jam. I really come to love this beast.

This is the thickest of the hp paper, and honestly the best I''ve ever seen used for photos. I would highly recommend it for use in picture frames. I would not recommend using it for regular photo albums, because of cost. PLus the fact that regular photos are better glossy. Excellent heavyweight paper. It has just the right amount of satin matte finish to diffuse reflections. On my HP Photosmart printer it gives me fantastic images, with much better color rendition and contrast than regular warehouse brand gloss paper. I now use this for all my prints that I like to frame.

One of the nice things about this paper is the coating on the back side of the paper that prevents papers from sticking together when stacked.

One caution if you use pigment based inkjet printers, this paper is not for you. Use this for all dye based inkjet printers, which a vast majority are. In the HP Photosmart range, as of this writing, only the Pro B9180 and Pro B8850 are pigment based inkjet printers.

I got this printer purely because of price. It has performed normally and I am very happy with it. I am posting this review because my experience is so different from some reviewers.

I had one case of printing segments of the document on multiple pages. Attempts to feed single sheets got the same result, indicating it was not the paper or printer. It went away after a restart of the PC.

I have had dozens of printers over the years. This printer is as good as most and I would buy it again.

I''ve got this printer because I''m in college and I have homework and stuff to print all the time. So far it has worked fine and it''s fast as heck when you print black and white-fast draft. People complain about the number of copies printed but I think they come with a sample of ink so you can start right out of the box. The ink you buy has more ml/oz, so don''t give up on a great printer. By the way,I have 2 HP printers and all our 7 computers in the house are HP, I trust the quality.

Unlike some of the other reviewers here, we have enjoyed this printer combo.

The ink carts come in two sizes, so if you want longer lasting ink just get the xl size. I also noticed Amazon sells refurb ink carts for just $10 with Prime free shipping so we''re happy about that as well.

We purcahsed ours for just $25 around Christmas 2011. Six months later and there is nothing to complain about and I am just ordering new black ink today.

After a big storm five or six months ago with power fluctuations and outages, my old Lexmark would no longer power on. I don''t do a lot of printing. I just need something that can do the occasional rebate form or recipe or Mapquest map as well as a quick copy now and then. The local Wally mart had this unit on sale for twenty-five bucks, so I picked one up. Heck, that''s less than what you''d pay for the color and black print cartridges for any printer on the market!

As I said, my print demands are light, so the negative reviews I found here didn''t faze me that much. I was very pleasantly surprised by this little guy''s performance. It''s acceptably fast, has very good print quality for both text and images and has had no problems whatsoever. It''s not blazingly fast, but it''s certainly fast enough. I have my print preferences set to fast draft-mode and the output is fine--very crisp and clear. Colors are rich and saturated, no banding or jaggies.

I''ve had no issues with paper jams, but I think that has more to do with the paper you use than with the printer. Look at any printer on this site and you''ll see a substantial portion of the reviews complaining about paper misfeeds. It doesn''t matter whether the printer is expensive or cheap, the rants about paper jams are ever-present. I use HP 24lb inkjet paper and I suspect that''s why I have no problems in this area.

Installation went smoothly. I have had the 1051 for about four months now. I''ve probably printed about 40 to 50 pages total. HP''s print utility tells me that I''ve used a little more than half of my black-and-white cartridge and a little less than half of the color. I continue to be pleased with both printer and copier in terms of quality and performance. I haven''t used the scanner.

***EDIT 11/2012*** I continue to be pleased with the HP 1051. I''m in the process of selling my home, and the lawyer prefers that I scan my documents and email them to him rather than FAX, so I''ve gotten some experience with the 1051''s scanner. HP gives you a scan utility that allows you to just choose what you want. Photo to JPEG or to TIF, or Document to PDF. That''s all you have to do. It works perfectly! My document PDF files are completely legible with just the right brightness and contrast. You can tweak settings if you want, but I haven''t found the need to do so.

I have exhausted the starter black cartridge that came with the printer. I''d guess about 75 pages. The folks that whine and carry on about expensive inks need to understand that *ALL* printers are like that. That''s the pricing model the the manufacturers use. They take a loss on the printer hardware itself and then make their money on the replacement ink. You can bluster and fulminate about how you''ll never buy another HP again, but you''ll discover that whichever brand you switch to plays the same game with the ink. It''s just a fact of life.

I normally purchase the Canon Combo Pack (twice in the last year) which comes with a color cartridge in addition to this specific black ink only cartridge. My kids have decided they need to print out a lot of text for school this year and have been going through the ink at a rate that I can verify is about 300 pages per this exact same black ink cartridge (Canon PG-240-XL). I''ve never had technical problems with these cartridges, but they''re pretty typical of inkjet prices and capacities. If you need them for your printer (mine is a Canon PIXMA MX432) you need them. For the price I paid it does work out to a tad less than 7 cents per page (I rounded up).

Storage time is rated at 24 months and I''m looking somewhere for a bulk purchase of this specific cartridge since the color ones aren''t needed that often. I''d happily buy a 3 or 4 pack for a per cartridge discount, but no luck so far.

Hard to "love" inkjet cartridges, but given the lack of any real problems, four out of five stars.

NOTE: If my offspring continue to gobble up black ink I''ll probably step up to the apparently more (per page) cost effective Canon PG-240 Double X (XXL) ink cartridge and update this review.

If you do any color printing, I''d suggest getting the combo pack even if you don''t need to replace the colored ink quite yet. You can hold onto it and replace the color later. But if you only do black and white printing, it''s a good option.

Had the regular sized 240 cartridge prior and it ran out pretty quick. Have printed about 30 pages so far without any signs of running out. Installation went well. I did not have any issues with the cartridge arriving empty or dry like others did. Might be a packaging or QA problem.

After finding out how expensive Canon branded ink is for the first time, and after having many issues with Canon Printers over the course of my lifetime...

I''m planning to invest in a different company that offers low cost Ink. It''s silly to see everyone buying into Canon products...they make most of their Profits off the ink itself.

It lasted for 1 month only. Never buy again. Print just 3-4 pages per day. Will look for something else.

HP Officejet Pro L7680 Color All-in-One Printer
  • Robust, professional-grade all-in-one printer, fax, scanner, and copier
  • High-quality scans at 2,400 dpi resolution
  • Prints up to 35 pages per minute
  • Windows and Mac compatible; built-in network card
  • 1-Year limited manufacturer''s warranty

I''ve had the HP L7680 for slightly over three months. I''ve been a pretty heavy user, having printed (according to the self-test page) almost 4000 pages during that time. Unlike some of the others mentioned here, my unit has been completely reliable.

Print Quality Printing is very sharp and closely approaches laser quality...it''s certainly above the threshold for business correspondence and presentations. The color output is solid, with almost no visible banding. I have not used it to print many photos, but those that I have have been also acceptable, given the constraints of a four color ink system. If photography printing is your primary usage, you should buy a printer with more ink colors.

Ink consumption Over the span of 4000 pages, I went through the initial set of ink cartridges and am now on the third black cartridge...the second cartridge was a standard capacity one, while the third is the XL version. It''s still 2/3 full. A second set of color cartridges were also the standard capacity versions. They''re still 3/4 full. When they go empty, they''ll also be replaced with the XL versions. Most of my printing is obviously black with a minor amount of spot color.

Faxing It works. Faxes seem to get there.

Copying The internal memory is inadequate to allow more than 5-6 pages of a document to be scanned and stored for collated printing. This flaw was obviously anticipated by the printer''s firmware designers...the page

that causes the memory to overflow is returned to the scanning input tray so it can be scanned in the next five page batch. Unfortunately this flaw requires manual intervention...you have to remove the five printed pages from the output tray, set them aside and then place them on top of the next batch out. This is an absolute pain...The leader of the copier design team should be required to make fifteen copies of Tolstoy''s War and Peace as atonement.

Scanning The HP software works, but is awkward. I have yet to discover where the defaults are set...and the preset ones aren''t optimal for my office. I''d like to be able to set it to scan an 8x11.5 letter size by default, rather than have the software guess the paper size based upon the image. It''s NEVER guessed correctly. And, after scanning something into Adobe Acrobat, I need to click on "cancel" three more times before the image is finally transferred...it''s like a Japanese monster movie...The Software That Wouldn''t Die. There''s other annoyances. The bottom line, though, is that it works. It''s just doesn''t work nicely.

So...the copying and scanning issues dropped this printer from a strong five stars down to three. It prints great and if there was a socket where I could add in more memory, the copying problem would go away. But there isn''t. And while the scanning stuff is just annoying, the copying problem is a real time-waster.

Update: Since I''ve had the printer for a year and a half, I thought I''d add in a quick update and note that it''s still going strong. I''ve gone through 500cc of black ink, 50-60cc of cyan and yellow, and 36cc of magenta. There has been some drift in the alignment, resulting in some slight banding while printing, but I suspect that that could be calibrated out. The only major problem has been wear in the automatic page feed mechanism in the document feeder, which causes misfeeds while faxing or copying. Cleaning the rollers and pads helped, but they should be replaced. The purchase of a high speed scanner (Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 Sheet-fed Scanner) has pretty much eliminated my use of the automatic document feeder, otherwise this problem would be a serious hassle.

Update 6/20/11 The price of ink cartridges for this printer has climbed to insane heights. While it used to be fairly economical to use, it''s now too expensive to keep. Although it bothers me to scrap something that''s still printing beautifully, out it goes...

We set up the printer carefully and it seemed fine at first. A few days later, we tried printing, and the pages came out stained with ink. Opening up the printer revealed large black ink puddles in the area underneath where the print heads move. There was obviously an internal ink leak.

I''ve used many HP printers in the past, both at home and at work, so I was optimistic that HP would be helpful and efficient in fixing the problem. Little did I know, the frustrations were only beginning.

The HP representative spoke minimal English and insisted on having me do all kinds of silly things to try to "fix the problem". Nothing he suggested could possibly have cleaned up the ink leak, but I humored him. For more than two hours. By now, the moderate ink leak had turned into a giant horrible mess, with black ink spilling over the desk under the printer. The printer was now reporting that the black ink cartridge was empty -i.e., the entire contents of the cartridge had leaked out.

To be clear, this was not a case of a bad support agent. The guy was obviously working from a series of scripts whose sole objective was to prevent them from fixing an obvoiusly defective product. From a "bean-counter" perspective, this probably saves HP a few dollars, but it''s an incredible waste of time for customers. And it resulted in ink spilling everywhere. (Shouldn''t HP know that, if a customer calls with an ink leak, you don''t tell them to do things that will cause more ink to leak out?)

Meanwhile, the agent was still refusing to fix the printer and was insisting that I needed to get a new ink cartridge. Of course, adding more ink would just have caused more ink to leak out. (Also, the ink leak was on the right side of the printer and the cartridges on the left, so this could not conceivably have fixed the problem.) He was steadfastly refusing to replace the printer.

Finally, I told the agent that I was going to post a description of what happened to Amazon, and he should tell this to his manager. A long time elapsed. Finally, he came back and said they would replace the printer after all.

Another hour elapsed of trying to get the agent to enter the credit card information correctly. (HP neededs "collateral" before they''ll honor their warranty obligations, and the combination of a balky credit card approval system and an agent with awful typing and English skills meant the process took forever.)

In summary:

-HP product quality is not what it used to be.

-HP support is the worst I''ve ever experienced ever.

-HP will refuse to honor its warranty obligations unless you threaten to post your experiences.

I''ve had this machine for about 5 days and so far so good. I had trouble installing it on one of my desktop computers and made the mistake of calling HP. Tech support answered right away, but the lady who was trying to help me didn''t understand english very well and I had touble understanding her because of a thick accent. She suggested making some changes to my startup file and if I had followed her instructions, I don''t think my computer would have re-booted.

Instead, I tried installing it on my laptop and it installed quite easily. I then installed it on another laptop and a different desktop and it is working fine on all machines. The printer is plugged into my router and I''ve had no trouble accessing it from the wired desktop, or wirelessly on the laptops through my wireless access point.

I am not a technical expert, but to me the print quality looks very good. The printer is very fast. I purposely handled one of the dried printouts with damp hands, and the ink did not smear.

I have not had a chance to set up the fax yet so I can''t comment on that. My only complaint is the amount of software that HP installs. I might uninstall it and then re-install it with the "customize" option. Right now Zone Alarm is constantly reporting attempts by the software to access the internet, even if I''m not doing anything with the printer. I don''t know why the price is showing up on Amazon at $414. I''ve seen this everywhere for $399; and Staples has a $50 off coupon too.

UPDATE 3/18/07

I used the fax wizard and set up the fax machine quickly, with no problems. The printer is faster than I expected. In draft mode, the quality is very good, and the L7680 is faster than my laser printer.

Scanning is problem free. I like the having the option of scanning directly to a portable USB device. I''m hoping it has a "preview mode" for scanning. I haven''t been able to find it yet.

Let me start by saying that I own an HP computer that I''m very happy with, and I have owned several HP printers in the past that have been reliable long term performers (the last being an Officejet G85). This printer is a piece of junk. With the first L7680 I had to jump through many hoops dealing with HP support (not very helpful and they wanted to charge me to get it to work out of the box!). Finally, I had to download an update to my BIOS so that I could turn on my HP computer with the L7680 turned on. Also, had an issue with color printing (didn''t print red) so the support told me to take out the cartridge and shake it. This worked temporarily. Fast forward a week and only blue prints for a while, and then nothing worked colorwise and they told me I needed new printheads. I took it back to the store and got another L7680. This one wouldn''t load paper to print without jamming.

Went back and got an older and cheaper model (that they are phasing out) Officejet 7310 (it feels more substantial and well put together than the newer model) and am so far happy with it (my fingers are crossed). This new Vivera print ink system (3 separate color cartridges) is getting a lot of hype, but if my experience is representative, they need to go back to the old more reliable single Tricolor cartridge setup. Save yourself stress and money and don''t buy this printer until they get their design and/or manufacturing issues sorted out.

I just purchased this printer as a replacement for a 5 year old HP ink jet that died. I use this printer in my home networked between a half a dozen computers, including a Mac notebook, a vista desktop, and a couple XP machines. Installation was a breeze in all operating systems although full Vista software support is still pending.

I originally intended to buy a laser because of the lower cost per print, and the generally higher black print quality. However after reading about these new HP ink jet printers I opted for this one. It''s as cheap per print or cheaper than laser, generally has better color printing than laser (as do most ink jets) and has acceptable black text printing (If I was printing professional documents for a business it would not do nor would any ink jet but for my home is fine)and it is as fast or faster than a laster to boot. This thing really cranks out the pages.

It is easy to set up as previously mentioned, prints dramatically faster than my previous HP ink jet, and supposedly should be cheaper to run than the older generation ink jets. So don''t write of ink jet printers just yet, for the home I could not find a comparable all-in-one laser color printer for anything near this price, and they were noisy and unreliable and generally the size of a small car.

In my opinion, office or all black text printing=laser.

Home all-in-ones=these new ink jets.

I give it 4 stars because of the lack of a fully featured Vista driver (come on HP, how long has the vista beta been in your hands, and fully released for 2 months now, and you are still shipping product without a full vista driver???? Someone should get FIRED for this gross incompetence!) Otherwise very happy.
