Ok, I am going to focus on one area here that has been under-referenced by the other reviews. Those reviews, by the way, are excellent, and provide a thorough review of the product and its capabilities.

The label cartridges for this unit are way too pricey. At $17-21 per cartridge, they are roughly double the cost of refills for other label makers, and represent 50% of the cost of the unit itself! It appears to be a continuation of the HP/Epson scam of selling you an inkjet printer at a loss, and making it back on the printer cartridges over time.

The unit itself is nice, easy, and pleasant to use; as I said, other "most helpful" reviews will cover the unit''s abilities in ways I need not echo. But as an ongoing cost, the price of the label cartridges is a sore spot. Also note that the unit ships with a "sample" label cartridge that contains a 4 meter tape less than half of what the normal cartridge carries. C''mon Epson, if you''re going to rip me off on cartridges for the life of my machine, how about a full measure to get me started!

Since I bought my first Brother label maker many years ago, I have been a big fan of label makers. They make organizing paper at home and at the office quick and convenient. I also used a label maker to label the drawers on my toolbox. You may use a label maker to label light switches and other miscellaneous controls and devices. I have even used a label maker to label boxes. Yes, I still have a Brother label maker and I still use it. I was glad to have the opportunity to review a different brand for comparison and to see how much label makers have evolved since I bought my last one, half a decade ago.

The Good Stuff:

This label maker has many interesting features. It has an array of symbols and frames (boxes and borders) that is beyond stunning. If there are labels you use often, you can save up to fifty of them. You may change the space between letters, go vertical, and even print them with a mirror image.

This label maker also prints bar codes. While you may think bar codes are only for work, inexpensive bar code readers can help you with a home inventory, or categorizing collections. This device will print index label tabs for files, which I plan to use, cable labels or flags, as some people call them, and wrapped labels. The array of features seems to be phenomenal and well beyond the features I have had available in the past.

Epson provided samples of some of the many tapes they plan to offer. Be advised that the label maker only comes with one sample tape, 12 mm black on white. Epson will also be offering colored tape, tape in different widths, glow-in-the-dark tape, and even iron-on tape that you might use for uniform nametags.

One of the big selling points with this label maker is that it uses relatively small margins on either end, meaning waste is relatively minimal. I consider this feature a big plus because the tape is expensive.

The display is cool. It has a backlight that a user may switch on or off. The backlight contrast is adjustable as well.

The label maker has options for multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, European Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, and German.

The back of the label maker has a location for a loop you may use to attach the label maker to your belt or place it around your neck. Epson is supposed to be offering an AC adapter if you want to avoid the expense of the six AA batteries it takes to power the label maker.

The Down Sides:

This label maker has all sorts of cool features that give it advantages over the three Brother label makers I have used. Unfortunately, there are a couple of few downsides as well.

The biggest downside is choosing the font size. On the Brother label makers, choosing the font is as easy as pushing a couple of buttons on the front panel and selecting until you have the size you want. The Epson requires you to hit a button and choose number of lines. Once you choose number of lines, then you need to choose a font size. I experimented a little to figure out how to do a couple of things. For example, you can print a small or large font on the top or bottom of a label, but you need to make the other line blank. I kept printing labels while trying various combinations to figure out how to accomplish that format. Therefore, if you want a small label near the top of a label, select two lines, hit enter, then select that you want a small font as the first line and hit enter again. When you enter the label, hit enter to create the second line and print. If you forget the second line, you get large font in the middle of the label.

I was surprised that this label maker does not seem to have a feature to let you position lines left, right or middle. The fancier Brother label makers let you do all three, and I tend to use the centering feature with multiple lines. While unnecessary, I think it looks better.

I tried looking for tape cartridge refills on Epson''s web site and on Amazon, without success. Epson needs to make the refills widely available. The tape does seem to be available in Europe. The current price seems somewhat comparable to Brother label maker tape. With the smaller borders, that should mean less waste, making the Epson tape effectively cheaper.

What do you buy?

This label maker offers many features over comparable Brother label makers. While getting the font size correct required a bit of playing around, I think I have that down. I like less waste, and the smaller margin does that. If I need wider margins, either I can set label length through the tools button or I can add spaces. The only problem I have right now is getting my hands on more tape cartridges.

I think the Epson LW-400 is a winner and offers enough features over comparable Brother label makers that this label maker is going to be my new default label maker from now on.

Labelmakers remind me of the episode of Seinfeld in which George labels everything and it all peels off. Labelmakers have come a long way since then.

I''ve used a few in the past. Generally they are limited and clumsy. The LW-400 was extremely portable and comfortable to use with one hand. With my other labelmakers I often had to consult a cheat guide to figure out exactly how to get the results I wanted. The Epson was very intuitive and some of the key features were printed on the back. I had no problems quickly getting up to speed.

The symbol library was extensive (and needed a manual). When space is limited, a picture as they say, speaks 1000 characters and while it didn''t have 1000 characters it did have several hundreds.

In particular, this was designed for the mobile technician. While it had standard labeling it had MULTIPLE options for labeling cables allow vertical and horizontal place and mirroring so that way the tag could be seen by both sides. Now you have no excuse not to mark everything (which port is workstation 7?)

Typical of most portable labelmakers, this one uses lots of batteries (6 AAA), but I found that my rechargables worked just fine. The labels came in a variety of sizes and colors and were easy to peel and place. No problems with them falling off (unlike George''s labelmaker). There is an AC adapter option, but that obviously impacts its portability.

Some others reviews pointed out a lack of fonts. This wasn''t a problem with me as I was more concerned with the placement of the text and the variety of print options. Instead of printing two copies of a label and sticking them together to mark a cable I now had an options to print one long cable and mirror the text.

Overall a great label printer for mobile technicians.

The label maker is cute and works and does what I wanted it to do. However, I would have been much happier if I had known it did NOT come with an AC adapter. If you want one of those, instead of using 8 AA batteries, you have to buy it for $25 from Epson directly because no one sells it including Amazon. That is a joke. It''s the same price as the machine itself just to get the adapter. Retarded. I wouldn''t have been so upset if it was clearly labeled that the adapter was missing. Finding out after the fact was just plain annoying.

I have to echo what so many have said about this unit. It works beautifully and is fun to use. But I cannot in good conscience spend such a ridiculous amount of money for replacement tapes! Printer ink is crazy expensive, too, but I grit my teeth and pay for it because I cannot get by without printing. But I can get by without making labels, and so I have just put this product away and not bought any replacement tapes/labels.

After going through so many bad printers within a year (hp 3420 & 3320) I use this photo smart printer mainly for photos which does an exceptional job. However, if you are going to use the color ink and photo ink together, avoid printing any black and white documents, it will take forever and prints in an off-black color. For me this is minor, you would expect that if you don''t use a black cartridge in most photo printers. I have seperate printer for document printing.

I also have this printer for over a year and so far no problems, it does not "gulp" ink or give me much paper jams. You will be satisfied for the price you pay, reasonable fast borderless printing with professional quality and great card reader features. I highly recommend.

The Photosmart 7260 is a fabulous printer when it comes to print quality. When using the correct paper (I use the HP Premium Plus) you can get true photograph quality prints from your digital images. I really couldn''t ask for better quality from that standpoint. The downside: I managed to get about 150 photos out of this printer before it decided to break on me. The mechanical gearing inside is loud and now gives me the most of my troubles. Often, the cartridges get stuck/jammed and a reset is required. Most recently, the printer color has gone bad and the printer prints images much more red than they should be and I have not been able to fix this even with the help of HP. The price is right, but with the troubles I''ve had over a year of ownership, I would consider other printers before this one.

I had a problem with the paper jamming on me also, until I realized it was a user malfunction, not the printer''s fault. Now I have no problems with the printer at all. I haven''t used it that much so far, but it does very well when I do use it.

If I was a company selling products like this I would get very frustrated at simple, impatient consumers blaming their problems on the product when a lot of the times it is simply user error.

Also, if one looks at the specs for this printer you would see it is not meant for heavy use. Says 1000 pages per month. We also have a 5550, not a photo printer as it has no memory card slots, but prints faster at the same resolution and is meant to be used up to 5000 pages per month.

The photosmart 7260 is a much quieter printer, and jerks around much less also. So far I''m happy with it. HP printers print heads are built into the ink cartridges, so if you have a problem with the print head you just have to replace the cartridge. I believe HP is the only brand that can make that claim, which may very well save you some money in the long run also.

For those who regularly ship through the USPS or even UPS, this little machine will save you time and money. It holds large rolls of labels and requires NO ink. There are no ink refill costs. With very few moving parts, there are less opportunities for malfunction or breakage. Used and refurbished units are generally a safe buy. I''ve been using a refurbished machine for 2 years and have printed thousands and thousands of labels with NO issues. I would suggest that one conduct thorough research as prices for these machines can vary greatly especially for not-new machines. I would also suggest that users consider investing in better quality labels for shipping use. Cheaper labels seem to print less darkly than those that are higher quality. Lastly, extended exposure to intense sunlight or heat and the gum of most tape will darken thermal labels. To keep from losing your printed information (and addresses) refrain from taping over the labels and avoid extended exposure to intense sunlight and heat.

As far as specifics go, I use the Zebra LP 2844 thermal printer with a desktop PC and Endicia postage software.

I am running Readyshipper PRO on a Mac to print USPS shipping labels, since this software integrates with my shopping cart.

Originally, I had tried using a DYMO 4xl label printer, but I could not get the labels to print properly aligned for the life of me. So I gave up, sold it, and with the funds, I bought this one (used). My mac already had the driver for it, so it was so easy to set up (only took 1 minute).

At first it was only printing blank labels, and I was getting very irritated, but then realized that the shipper had put the labels in upside down/the wrong way.

After I fixed that, labels were printing perfectly aligned and very effortlessly.

They print a little slow compared to the DYMO 4xl, but heyI''d rather them print slow & perfect, than fast and have only a tiny piece of the label printed on the corner!

Years ago when I worked for a law firm we had one of these for the UPS computer. I remember it never having a problem. In an office that seemed full of the technologically handicapped, it was the one thing that never failed.

Fast forward a decade. I''m the owner of a small farm business. We were looking for some way of printing our own labels for our many products (mostly whole fresh poultry or frozen meat for pet food). We were expecting LaserJet or something labels, but then I stumbled across my old friend here and we thought we could probably pull it off with a thermal label printer like this if we were okay with printing just one color (which we are).

I found a used one for $60, bought some Zebra labels (buy labels from barcodediscount.com excellent customer service checked in with me before processing the order to make sure I had a compatible printer) and now we have print-on-demand labels. If you''re putting them on plastic food packages to be frozen, get the Z-Select 4000D series labels, which are made for low temperature applications.

For a small company like us, spending a fortune on a minimum 500 pre-printed labels for each product wasn''t an option, and handwriting labels is kind of tacky. Yes, they''re in black and white, but we can customize each label to suit our needs. And, no need for ribbons or ink. At about $30 for 700 4"x4" labels it ended up being a good deal. We would''ve paid the same ($90) for about 1000 of a single label. At least with this we''re not tied down to one thing!

Setup wasn''t a breeze, but it''s because I got cocky. For Windows 7 users: Download the newest version of Zebra Printer Setup and install it. Follow its instructions for adding a new printer and rather than select one manually, let Windows Update locate and install the driver.

When I bought it the description said that it was compatible with Mac OS systems however, it did not work with mine. I would never thought an inkjet printer will match prints from a pro lab. I was debating between R2000 and the aging Canon 9000 Mark II. At the time of my purchased, there were no review in Amazon. I have farmed out most my works to Professional online and local lab in Minnesota in the past. Bought mine on Octorber 2011. I finally have side by side comparison prints from a Pro lab and R2000. For print size of 4"x6" to 11"x14", you won''t notice the different. Wifi ready is big PLUS, it allow me to place the printer anywhere in the studio with an outlet. I have not print from roll and CD cover yet. For the last 3 months, I have not encountered double feeding, paper jam and ink clogging issue a well known problem for epson printers in the past. I''ve tested the clogging issue by not printing for 3 weeks and it still printed just fine. I will update my review if any thing arise.

Pro. WIFI ready, compact, print on roll, print CD cover and professional quality for a $500 printer.

Con. Use a lot of Gloss-Optimizer ink in 2-1 ratio of other colors if print strictly in photo on luster paper.

This gargantuan printer prints incredible photos. There are endless color adjustments possible and the prints are sharp and clear. I find the Adobe RGB setting to be most realistic color for fleshtones. The downside for me, and the reason I have to return this printer, is that although the printer is wireless and is supposed to be one of the printers that is Epson iprint enabled, the ONLY things that I was able to print through the iprint app were JPEGs. The app brings up choices of photos, docs, cloud storage, etc. as selections for printing, but each and every file type except JPEG produces an "unsupported file type" error. The printer is also not (yet) compatible with Epson''s email printing. To be clear, I was able to print all the file types I needed from my home computer/laptop. But much of what I want to print, I want to be able to do remotely from an android device.

I contacted Epson about the JPEG only issue, as the types of projects I would be printing would include files other than JPEG and I regularly use andoid devices for at least parts of my projects. Epson''s response was as follows: "At this time, the JPEG file type is all that is supported. They are always updating this so it will most likely have more support in the future." I wish they could have given me something more concrete what additional remote printing options will be available and in what time frame. So I have to reluctantly return this printer, but will keep an eye on it to possibly purchase again in the future when updates to connectivity have been made.

I purchased this printer in December 2011 and hadn''t opened it because I wasn''t sure of the location. I knew the printer would be large (did my research) so I waited until I found a spot. The set up was super easy and the printer found my wifi location very quickly. I love that the printer can be located anywhere in the house and doesn''t have to be directly connected to the computer.

The picture quality is absolutely brilliant. I didn''t know what to expect from a home photo printer but I had read so many reviews and run across so many people that have this model that I decided to bite the bullet (the $100 rebate also helped my decision). I''m a full time scrap booker and amateur photographer so I print a lot of photos. I like the freedom and flexibility of deciding how I want my photos printed on the spot instead of sending them out for print and realize that a different size photo would have worked better.

I just ordered extra ink cartridges from the Epson Store because I received a coupon code but the cartridges are a little pricey still.

All in all, I love this printer and recommend it.

After years of using Canon printers, I decided to purchase an Epson R2000 to replace my old Canon Pro 9000. It had finally given up the ghost after years of faithful service. Why the switch? I had never used pigment inks before, for fear of the nozzle clogging reported so frequently with their use. Also, color is my thing and the vividness of colors from the dye type inks was outstanding. But, I just wanted to try the pigment ink since I had never previously done so. I really didn''t care that they have, on average, twice the fading or color change resistence that dye inks do. The newest dye inks last upward of 100 years when kept in an album, and I''ll be long gone befoe any of them fade. People don''t realize that modern giclee(spray) prints, even the dye type, when done on matched paper, last much longer than the old wet lab prints we used to get from the photo lab. I have some old lab prints from 35 years ago that have faded to an overall magenta hue. These prints had not been exposed to daily sunlight. My preferred paper is the semigloss or luster type. I don''t use matte papers very frequently. I often do 12 x 18 prints on 13 x19 paper so a printer handling that format was necessary. Epson had introduced a new pigment printer in the 13 x19 format that seemed to be optimized for printing on glossy or semigloss type papers, the R2000. It used pigment inks, but from what I could determine, they gave beautiful vivid colors almost indistinguishable from dye based inks. The R2000 had all the bells and whistles I would ever need. I decided to give it a try.

I am happy that I did try it out. The colors are as vivid as my old Canon Pro 9000. The Epson prints about as fast for comparable sizes as the Pro 9000 did. This had been a complaint with earlier Epson printers, slow printing. The new ones keep right up with the equivalent Canons that were among the fastest dedicated home photo printers. Clogging has not been a problem using Epson factory inks. I might try a non-manufacturer ink in a dye type printer, but I firmly believe it is best to stay with the factory inks in a pigment type printer. I have gone as long as one month between prints with the Epson, but have had no problems with clogged nozzles. Since pigment inks can have the pigment settle in the cartridge if it sits unused for a while, Epson includes a neat ink cartridge shaker in this printer. The larger format Epsons keep the ink mixed by bubbling air through the cartridge. This one shakes the cartridge up for 30 seconds. The shaker can be started any time by just going to the maintenence part of the driver and clicking on it.

Now to the important stuff: the print quality. In a word, outstanding! The vividness of the colors is a match for the Pro 9000. I have tried a number of papers, including the Epson factory papers, but the one I like best is the Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl. This is Ilford''s equivalent to the Epson Premium Luster. I have compared both and in my opinion the Ilford just edges out the Epson paper in vividness and color quality. That is something I didn''t expect since the Epson Premium Luster has such a great reputation. Ilford has a printer profile for using this paper in the R2000 printer and it works fantastically. I print out of Photoshop Elements and have a calibrated display. Using the Ilford profile, the results are truly WYSIWYG. I have tried a number of other papers including high gloss and matte, but the only one I really liked was the Red River Paper''s Polar Metallic. This stuff gives a print that looks for all the world like the metallic prints on Kodak''s special paper that you can get from a photo lab service. If you have a very colorful photo, and you want the colors to really pop, give the Polar Metallic a try.

In summary, I am very happy with my new printer. It does everything I want it to do and I do not see myself outgrowing it for a long while.

I always wanted to do my own printing but the start up costs and the steep learning curve kept me from attempting it. But then I read an article about the R2000 that made me curious whether or not this could be the printer for me. So I googled this reviews for this printer and couldn''t for the life of me find any bad reviews, in fact, they all said about the same thing excellent image reproductions along with the ease of not having to switch out the black cartridges. Then I see a rebate being offered by Epson for $100 off the top. This, coupled with free shipping and no tax, I couldn''t resist and I pushed the little yellow Amazon button.

The printer arrived one day later (I did the $3.99 overnight shipping. How they can ship a printer overnight for only $3.99 is beyond me). Worried the set up would be complicated I read everything I could about it. Turns out the set up was painfully simple. Just remove the multiple strips of blue tape, plug it in and add the ink. One thing the instructions failed to mention is once you add the ink cartridges and close the hood you have to press the little "ink" button, whereas the instructions would leave you to believe simply closing the hood would trigger the priming. Nevertheless, it took maybe 5 min at the most to be up and running. The installation software was equally simple and took approximately another 5 min to install and to connect to my wireless network. Crazy simple, I thought, all the while waiting for the "other shoe" to drop. Printing will be another story, I thought.

Well, I couldn''t be more wrong. Printing was as simple as setting the printer up. The key is to be sure you understand color management and use the right profiles for both printer and paper. It took a little experimentation but nothing drastic. And once I dialed in it all began to make sense. As long as you have the profile for the paper (which is pretty much the profile for the printer, too) and you either choose to let the printer handle color management or you do it in Photoshop/Lightroom and you''re done. You may at first think your printouts are slightly darker than the monitor image would lead you to believe but generally they''re not. Part of the issue is that you have to match the same viewing light on the print out as you are in the monitor and once I used stronger light (or the sunlight) the image was indeed perfect. Don''t get me wrong, there were examples where the print out didn''t match the monitor but it always turned out to be an operator error and one that was easily fixed. Just be sure to use quality paper and soon your walls will be filled with images that before only existed in cyberspace!

To sum it all up, I highly recommend this printer to anyone looking to print high quality fine art images. You certainly can pay more for a printer with bigger numbers next to the words "Epson" but you really can''t produce a better print out with that money (with the possible exception of specialized B%W printers, but that''s another story altogether). Don''t be worried that you''ll waste ink trying to figure this one out because it really is as easy as they say it is.

I have at least one to two of this model printer in the offices I work at because they are so reliable, and need minimal maintenence. All of mine are in health care settings, where records are key. Some are one two or three trays. The toner last for many sheets of printing (never counted, but I know I probably go more than 1000 sheets at least). The printer rarely jams (except when I used really cheap thin paper), and the secretaries love the sheet feed selection if having to use overhead paper for a letter. The quality of the print (i believe up to 1200dpi) is great for black and white. Highly recommended investment, quite likely one of the last printers your office will need.

The pictures you get are gorgeous. If you want to pay about a buck a pic, that is. The ink cartridge DOES NOT LAST! We get between 35 and 50 pictures, not 150. This is the second time it has happened, and we use the cartridge well before the "use by" date. See the reviews on the cartridge pack for verification. This was our first Epson, we usually only buy HP, and this will be our last. Too bad Epson would rather make a buck on print packs than be customer loyalty oriented, but what else can we expect these days?

My husband bought this for me because we have 6 kids and I live with my camera in my hands. This is so convenient, I can take it anywhere, I don''t have to have a computer to crop, zoom or take out red eye. The picture quality is great and I love that it gives me the option to add a date stamp to each picture. Being able to copy my photos straight from my memory card to a disk was just a super bonus. This is a great product. It may be small, but big on picture quality. I had seen this machine a couple of years back at a scrapbooking convention, and had already seen the quality of the pictures. I was impressed for it''s size, I didn''t expect much. I do already have a much larger EPSON printer that is over 24" long, that cost over $1000 when it came out, and can print 13x17 pictures with not only 10 cartridges of ink, but 5 of them being black. Yes, this is a phenomenal printer too, especially since I do so many black & white photos, but certainly not portable. I wasn''t able to find this PictureMate printer anywhere in a store, no matter where I looked, but didn''t consider going directly to Epson at the time. I was just surprised it couldn''t be found at Best Buy or other Computer stores. Two years later, I attended another CRAFT HOBBY ASSOCIATION convention and took a class, which was not sponsored by Epson. This class changed my thinking about scrapbooking and my style at this time in my life, wanting to simplify everything. I got to use this PictureMate printer in that class; print as much as I wanted, and try all the menu settings and options out of the box. I have never used my camera flash storage directly to printer before either. I always download all my photos, and store them in folders, and rotate them and organize them in Photoshop Elements, which is time-consuming and vulnerable at the same time. The printer takes many camera''s flash storage, and it was simple without having to read manuals. It was super fast & easy, and I LOVE the index prints. It also surprized me having all those different print sizes that would fit on a 4x6 borderless (if you choose) sheet of photo paper. Two years after I initially saw it, I realized it had been improved and had more options, including the cd writer! How convenient! This PictureMate is even better than I expected. I originally wanted this just to take this to scrapbooking crops and our annual scrapbooking retreat since it has power cord, but can even run 9 hours on rechargeable battery! I thought it would be great to have current pictures from crops and conventions and be able to print them out to scrapbook them immediately in some of my class projects! But since I took that new class showing me how to scrapbook a condensed version of a calendar year into a smaller book with plenty of journaling pages from Creative Imaginations, I''ve got this printer on my desk and used it quickly to put together mini-books from our summer vacations. I bought this particular printer because it got good reviews here on Amazon, but I have been very disappointed with it. It prints verrrrry slowly. Paper is difficult to load and it jams up if you put more than about 6 sheets into the paper feed. We hadn''t had it a week when suddenly we got an error message saying the color cartridge was not recognized (it''s the one that CAME WITH IT.)

I loathe this printer with a passion and I am sorry I bought it. Yes, I can probably return it due to the color cartridge issue, but who wants to mess around with that? I buy new stuff because I expect not to have to screw around with repairs/replacement for awhile.

As a Computer Technician at a major electronics outlet, let me say I''ve been called apon to tech support all the issues listed previously and more. HPs install software on this model is notoriously buggy, especially under Windows ME and 98SE. I have also gotten numerous calls confirming issues with the printer rejecting the inks a month or two after purchase. Sometimes purchasing new inks works, sometimes it does not, leading me to believe it is a problem with how this printer authenticates geniune HP ink.

All in all, the customers who have gotten this printer to work and continue to work are extremely happy with it, but large scale issues getting it that far make me hesitant to recommend it.

I bought this printer because I have always been satisfied with previous HP printers that I have owned. However, this one was a mess from the start. I can live with the fact that it prints slowly and the scans are very poor. However, from week #2 this printer started getting paper jams errors and out of paper errors when the tray was full of HP all in one paper. The paper feed often pulls gobs of paper at a time unless you only put about six sheets of paper in the tray at a time. I have called HP customer support but they are of absolutely no use. Since the printer was only days old I wanted it replaced. Instead they insisted on "troubleshooting" the problem. I have complained four times and insisted on a new printer. However, they insist on "troubleshooting" the problem. The problem is that I have a defective printer and want it replaced. HP has outsourced their customer support to India so you cannot get anything out of them other than what they are reading on their computer screens. It is like talking to a robot with a bad accent. My advice: Stay away from HP printers altogether.

I''ve had the HP PSC 1610 for four months, and it operates exactly as advertised. Flawless performance.

Positive items:

* The printing in draft mode is very fast, very legible, and saves a lot on ink.

* The printing in normal mode looks great.

* The scanner software is easy to use. The scanner and copier work very well and the output is really good (within specifications).

* The 1610 can fit in a small space.

I don''t have any overtly negative items to report, but here are a few caveats you should consider when getting this printer. If you read through the previous reviews, you''ll see that some people have had problems with the 1610. My guess is that their problems are a result of one of the following four causes:

1. The unit requires a slightly convoluted setup. You are instructed to install the software first, and then hook up the printer during setup when prompted by the software. People who hook up the printer first (ignoring HP''s explicit instructions) will likely have driver problems.

2. When the 1610 was released originally, it had some ink cartridge firmware malfunctions (full ink cartridges were incorrectly rendered useless by the machine). This was fixed a long time ago with a firmware upgrade. The upgrade is free and available as a download at the HP site. It''s no big deal, but if you skip it, then the unit may not operate correctly.

3. This printer, like any printer, works best with a mainstream "plain-vanilla system." These days that means Windows XP. If you''re running older versions of Windows, or some other operating system, or you have a lot of potential device conflicts, then you may have problems with the 1610, or you may not. But this is true of any hardware or software.

4. The unit is constructed primarily for home and light-business use; let''s say up to 50 pages a day. So you can''t load it with a whole ream of paper. And ink cartridges won''t last too long if you''re printing hundreds of pages.

My guess is that the above four items cause 98% of the negative reviews this unit has received. But I can''t say for sure, because the HP PSC 1610 works perfectly for me. No problems, at all, ever. I''m very pleased.

We bought this unit four months ago. It worked fine for three months but has been a misery for the last month. It developed some kind of software problem that HP hasn''t been able to fix. As a result, I can only use the printer with great difficulty. At least HP admitted that the problem is with the unit and that a number of other buyers have had the exact same problem. Anyway, save yourself a great deal of trouble and AVOID this particular HP unit. We have never had any trouble with HP stuff before. Just this one.

Most of your less expensive name tags are thin paper, and the adhesive isn''t anything to write home about. These are made from a thick plastic film and have some serious adhesive. Definitely should last multiple applications on most fabrics. Normal cautions apply for leather, etc.

Downloadable template allows you to print from your computer. The plastic material also makes laser and ink jet printing look crisper kind of like the plastic coating on photo paper. Even magic marker looks nicer on this material. Sharper contrast and brighter colors.

Perforated so you can separate the name tags individually. At about 25 cents each, they cost more than other name tags but still are an inexpensive way to upgrade your next event!!!

Lapels are generally not a good place for name tags since they are not quite big enough to stick the entire badge on (unless maybe you are wearing a 70s suit/leisure suit) and just big enough to cover it up if you put it on your jacket above the pocket.

Because these are super sticky you can just slap it on letting it overhang the lapel and not worry about it falling off. I wore one on my suit and it stayed in place, even when simulating some fancy dance moves (the robot, the hustle, eclectic slide). The post-it name badges feed easily through my laser printer. I have not experienced any jamming, which is always a potential problem with label products. (I did not try them in an inkjet. Inkjet printings are prone to run when wet, so be aware of that if you intend to use these on an inkjet.)

The downloadable templates worked perfectly in Microsoft Word.

The labels are easy to pull off the back and adhere well to clothes, even tolerating about 2 or 3 changes in positions (after that they begin to curl).

Therefore, it really comes down to personal preference. I have been using the Avery Half-Fold Greeting Cards # 3265 for years. I have tried many other brands. Most "glossy" card stock I have purchased is so flimsy the cards have a cheap, "funky" feel and not worth the ink. The Avery 3265 stock has a nice feel, is thick enough to feel like a real card and the print output is quite phenomenal with my Epson Stylus Photo Printer.

I have printed photo''s, clip art and every possible combination over the years on the Avery 3265 card stock and I am constantly blown away by the quality of the prints as are the people I give the cards to. Perhaps the person that can not get good photo prints on them is using the wrong printer (I use a Canon and my Epson and both get great results). I get photo-realistic prints that are just as good as on photo card stock (albeit on the 3265 matt finish). I just printed Chinese New Year cards today and one in particular, a dragon on a black background looks like the black area is pure velvet. Very cool.

I highly recommend the Avery 3265 card stock for anyone wanting to make cards from home. Just a tip. Best prints come out of an inkjet photo printer (any brand). You will use a bit of ink to make the card, but, hey, that is why you bought a photo printer. So you could make "cool" prints!

This product provides a certain amount of convenience but is not anything special. It is 8.5x11-in. card stock for inkjet printers, with a crease in the middle for folding. It has a template number for use with word-processing and creative-project software, but templates can often be more trouble than they are worth, especially for the simple task of dividing a simple letter-sized sheet into two parts. There is a convenience, to be sure, in having correct-sized envelopes packaged with the paper; but again, there is nothing special about this size of envelope; and they feel somewhat flimsy, not exactly something in which to encase the results of your artistic labors.

Plain is OK, but to get a top rating from me this product would have needed to have been special in some way, such as perhaps being glossy on half of one side in order to provide a space in which to print a photo vibrantly.

I got a fabulous image from NASAs Hubble Christmas card page, and made a few modifications and used this paper to print Christmas cards, and it worked beautifully.

Somebody told me that card stock does not work well with the duplexer on my printer, and so I printed one side, and then printed the other manually. I have no idea if it would have printed both sides automatically if I''d tried it.

The cards were easy to print (once I got the art the way I wanted it to be--proof on regular paper) and looked great.
