Five Stars because the HP 38 Cyan Pigment Ink Cartridge was shipped immediately and arrived promptly in good condition. If you use HP 38 ink in your printer, you must have all eight colors in the HP 38 series for your printer to operate properly, so price is a big consideration. Buying blind can cost you more for a complete set of inks, including more than one cartridge for the light gray and a couple of other colors that are used up faster than the others, than a new printer, and in fact I have heard of people that simply buy a new printer (of a different make) because it''s cheaper than the inks. Amazon has a selection of vendors, but be wary I recently picked the lowest price for each color, mostly from one vendor, and when I went to check out I found that this particular vendor charged $9 per cartridge for shipping and handling, making them the most expensive vendor on Amazon.

I stock up on inks only occasionally. The trigger event is when the warning light on the printer for a particular color comes on, and I don''t have that color ready to change. When that happens, I check out what I do have, flesh out what I need to have a complete set including two of light gray, light cyan, and light magenta, and order them all, usually on Amazon. I like genuine HP inks on Amazon because that''s where the price, Amazon Prime free shipping, vendor reliability, and prompt delivery all come together. I need genuine HP inks because I have this printer for studio-quality color prints and I depend on it for my most-invested hobby, and I don''t have the time or patience to deal with cartridges that require color re-calibration or don''t provide the color fidelity that I expect of an 8-ink printer, or that don''t last as long as HP 38 ink cartridges. One of the reasons that I selected this printer was the combination of quality prints, low cost per print, and long life of the ink cartridges, a rare combination.

I bought the Canon imageCLASS MF3240 about a month ago, and so far it has exceeded my expectations. I''d definitely recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a multifunction device without the need to print in color. If you prefer getting your digital photos printed by an online or in-store photo processor, a laser multifunction is usually the way to go -since it''s a lower cost per page, it''s faster, and the output is better quality than an inkjet.

APPEARANCE/CONSTRUCTION:

You can tell that it''s a sub-$200 machine by the construction. Don''t expect the same kind of solid feel that you''ll get from a much more expensive piece of equipment. A few of the plastic parts feel a little flimsy, like the paper tray. But they all seem to work fine, and I don''t have any concerns about durability. Unless you''re really tough on your office equipment, you should be ok.

The MF3240 isn''t the sexiest looking multifunction out there (if you''re looking for a great looking device, try the Canon PIXMA MP830, which uses inkjet technology so you can print in color too). In fact, it kind of looks like a cooler sitting on the desk. But the buttons are laid out logically on the keypad, and from the investigating I''ve done into a lot of different multifunction devices, the footprint on this one seems to be a reasonable size.

PERFORMANCE:

So far, so good. If you''re really a stickler for the highest output possible -if you need the most crisp, darkest text and flawless images -this probably isn''t the machine for you. Don''t get me wrong...the output is very good, borderline excellent. But you can tell that it wasn''t printed on a $1,000 heavy-duty laser printer.

This baby is fast! Total time for the first page to arrive in my hand after clicking the Print button (including warmup time) was 13 seconds. It''s considerably faster warming up than my old HP laser printer.

It''s not the quietest machine I''ve ever heard, but I wouldn''t call it too loud either.

It has a toner saver mode, but I''d call this an annoyance. You''re supposed to be able to set the toner saver either directly on the printer control panel or through the printer driver. I''ve tried a number of times to set up two profiles: one that uses toner saver and another that doesn''t. It works sometimes, but other times it''ll end up in the wrong mode. Even when I get it to work, I don''t notice much of a difference in output between toner saver mode and the regular mode.

I''ve also been having a minor problem with the fax. I have the MF3240 hooked up to my phone line, and a phone extension hooked into the fax machine. The fax machine is set in Manual mode, so it shouldn''t do anything unless I take action on my own. But I''ve had one or two phone calls on the extension that''s hooked up to the fax where the machine hangs up on the person I''m talking to after about 10 minutes! If I can''t get this problem to stop, I may end up getting a splitter for the phone line and hooking the phone extension into the line separately.

SOFTWARE:

It comes bundled with a light version of OCR software. I tried it once, and it seemed to recognize every single word on the page I scanned. I was quite impressed -much better than older versions of OCR I''ve tried (although I must admit this is the first OCR software I''ve tried in at least 6-7 years, so I''m sure the technology is much better now).

It also installs a piece of software called Canon Multifunction Toolbox 4.9. This is the most pleasant surprise I''ve experienced with this printer so far. It allows you to click one button, go through a couple simple settings, and then get a scan and go straight to an e-mail, or straight to a PDF, etc. The smartest feature is that it allows you to pick a target file size, and it''ll adjust the resolution to achieve that file size. So it eliminates trying to scan something and then finding out the resulting file is 20MB, then needing to go back and re-scan it at a lower resolution before you e-mail it. You simply pick your target file size (let''s say 1MB) and the software will scan your document at the proper resolution to achieve that file size. Very smart!

OVERALL:

Amazon has even knocked ten dollars off the price since I bought it...now it''s going for about one hundred fifty bucks...so it''s an even better value today. This is a very good multifunction device for light/moderate home or home office use. Given the chance to do it all over, I''d definitely buy the MF3240 again.

UPDATE 9/2010: The Canon Multifunction Toolbox software doesn''t work with Windows 7. It''s not a huge problem, since you can still use all the main functions of the machine. But you will lose a little functionality, such as the one-touch scanning capability.

Pros:

Inexpensive (I paid $155.99/free shipping here at Amazon which is amazing considering all the functions I get from this solid machine)

Good computer printing... it does what a b/w laser printer is supposed to: great on text and ok on graphics. It does a comparable job as my previous HP LJ1100 laser printer. Internal paper tray which holds 250 pages is an improvement over my HP.

Appropriate scanning result. Good for document archiving purpose. I tried to scan an old color photo and print it in another color inkjet printer. The result is beyond my expectation.

Copier does what it is supposed to. Pretty easy to operate and configure different settings.

Cons:

FAX function in general is a dispointment. First, if I connect the printer with my phone (i.e.,in-line or serial), the printer "wakes up" from idle mode whenever I pick up the phone. I have to use a splitter to avoid this nuisance. As a result, I pretty much need to set it to Manual mode for FAX. Also, as other people mentioned, there is no auto feeder for FAX. Fortunately I only use FAX occasionally.

A little too loud for my taste. I have seen many other models that are much quieter than this.

Bottom line:

If you are like myself who does not use FAX that frequently, you will love this unbelivable bargain. It does everything I used to get done at Kinko''s at $156!

This is a good product for its price. I have not found any deficiencies so far in the features this machine offers.

There are two major features (from my point of view) that this unit lucks:

automatic document feeder;

double-sided printing;

For those of you who would like to have those features, I strongly recommend to consider another model, like Canon MF4150 for example (which btw costs only $40 more). If I could turn back time, I would definitely go for the MF4150.

The parts feet flimsy, so I was little surprised when the printer stopped due to a recurring paper jam within 4 months of purchase.

Canon asked me to take it down to their authorized service center. I did as was told, but then was called back by their service center in a few days that ''they couldn''t repair the printer, and I should take it back!"

Upon calling Canon customer service again, they are now asking me to get the printer back from their (Canon) service center, and ship it to Canon. Ridiculous! Now I am supposed to provide courier service between Canon and its service centers? The printer is in warranty and lying at their service center!

The Canon MF3240 is a decent printer for the home user and small business users. I got my Canon MF3240 at a pretty low price so initially I was quite happy with it. When I received it, the look of the printer seemed old fashioned and not good looking at all. The printer is fairly large, but it is typical for most decent multifunction printers. The print quality for this laser printer is excellent and it prints quite fast. The usability of this product is good although some tweaking is needed here and there. I found the lack of a power button to be extremely annoying. The software was much better than my old Epson multifunction printer, but it still is a bit annoying here and there. I also could not find a way to stop printing when I had numerous sheets printing, except by unplugging the printer. It seems like that stop/reset button is nearly useless under normal circumstances. The scanner works great although it can be a bit slow to start. The manual multipurpose tray works good with envelopes. Printing double sided (duplex) is extremely annoying as when the odd pages are printed, the heat curls the paper. Even the slightest curl will cause a paper jam when it is loaded back in to print the even pages. This is a huge flaw that makes double sided (duplex) printing almost impossible. I absolutely cannot give the MF3240 anything more than 3 stars due to the amount of little quirks and the constant paper jamming for double sided (duplex) printing.

Edit: I know this has been mentioned in other reviews, but I have been experiencing this quite often. I like to use sheets that are not 8.5" x 11" and this causes a an error if the correct paper size is not selected. The only correct way to clear the error is to insert the correct sized sheet and this will waste toner. The incorrect way is to "unplug" the printer which probably will cause damage in the long run. This is another flaw with this printer model.

I am so happy with my new 5100. I got my new printer at Walmart for $99, after finding the ink cartridges I needed for my old Lexmark were going to cost me over $70 for color and black. I have not really been happy with my Lexmark print quality and the printer drank ink. I was very motivated to try the Kodak.

My first impression, out of the box, was the complexity of the install. I read through all the instructions before getting started and was very glad that I know something about computers. Kodak might consider making installation a bit easier, because it was quite a chore. I had problems getting the printer to print the page that calibrates the printer. I was glad for the printer paper that was included. I would have been in trouble without it.

Once installed, I started testing my printer. I printed one 4X6 photo, a 25 sheet report, 150 business cards, 6 pieces of sheet music and my tax forms for 2007. My ink is STILL showing at 100%. The print quality was excellent. I was able to print all my docs in draft mode and they look great. Draft mode on my Lexmark was grainy and looked washed out. I was so amazed at the crispness of the colors. Plus, printing is nearly twice the speed of my Lexmark. The pages shot out so fast, it startled me a bit.

The paper tray is annoying a bit. It is a fold out piece that fits up into the paper tray. If this piece is not folded out, your papers end up on the floor. Folded out, it seems very flimsy and some care must be taken to make sure it does not break. If you break it off, you will have nothing to catch your papers with.

The printer is a bit noisy. It is rather loud when it is printing and from time to time, just seems to come on by itself. I think it is cleaning the printer head.

I am also concerned about the cost of a replacement head. I says the head is permenant but no printer head has ever been created that lasts forever. The cost of a replacement head could be quite high, as with other models that have separate heads/inks (ie: cannon multijets) But with the ink costs so low, as long as the printer head lasts for a good number of pages, it will be so worth not paying $70 for ink. I will keep printing and see how it goes. If something changes, I will record it here but for now, I am totally happy with my new printer.

Overall, I give the Kodak 4 STARS!!!

So I turn on my printer this morning, had to print a couple of vacation pics real quick to give to someone... but once again, this printer refuses to print one of its colors... This time, the yellow seems to be "stuck".

This printer might be great for people who print every single day (although I''m not sure it makes a difference, just conjectures...). Here''s where I think the good reviews come from: when you first open the package and start printing, it does exactly what it''s advertised for: great photo printing quality on the photo paper in the dedicated tray, while descent printing of letter size document. The scanner is on par with the $99 Canons you can get, and the "photocopy" function that scans + print all in the push of a button is a great time saver for daily office work...

... BUT ...

If you don''t print for a couple of weeks, you can be pretty sure that the ink will get stuck and the printer will be unusable. Doing all the trouble shooting, head cleaning stuff from the provided maintenance software won''t help. The only thing that WILL help is to get a replacement print head from the tech support via phone. Granted, they''re very useful, friendly, and will ship you a new head at no cost, with extra ink cartridges for free... But you''ll have to do that every time you don''t print anything for more than a few days. To me, that qualifies as a buggy piece of junk not ready for production. From the other comments, and how easy it is to get a replacement from customer service, it''s obviously a known issue...

On top of that, on OS X, they''re some obvious USB connection problems on the software level... Checking ink levels will randomly disconnect all USB devices on your Mac, you have to plug/unplug your USB devices (such as keyboard... mouse... whatever''s the flavor of the day...) and hope you don''t have to restart...

So, yeah, when it works it''s a great printer.... but that''s 5% of the time you use this junk.

Yes, the ink is cheap and your printer may even work for several months to a year. But the printheads on these things just break down. When I call Kodak for support they tell me this is normal. Kodak printheads "go bad," as Kodak''s tech support says, as if these things are like little cartons of milk. I''ve had to replace two in two years. And I use normal paper, Kodak ink, and print about 20 pages a month. This machine is a cheap piece of junk. You may save money on ink, but you''ll spend it on replacement printheads. Eventually you''ll spend it on a more reliable printer, which you should have bought in the first place.

I am going to give the basic problems I have encountered with this printer. There are many but this will be the last KODAK printer I will ever buy. 1st, I got it on sale for around $70. I thought it was a steal compared to others with these features. I have owned it for over a year now and it has been a nightmare. You constantly run out of ink. I print an average of 10 pages a week, sometimes a little more. This thing ran out of ink monthly, as if it were on a timer. I found out the ink replacement cartridges have a chip. WOW, way to go Kodak, you found a way to make a ton of back end money. 2nd biggest problem is that it prints certain fonts poorly. Forget about fine print, it is horrible. The biggest problem is the ink system delivery. It just doesn''t work well. After a few months it seemed to dry and cause problems.

Save yourself the time and effort. Don''t buy this machine. Used it isn''t worth the postage or gas to pick it up. Total garbage.

Kodak stick to camera''s and software. The software you get with the printer is good.

Canon i560 Desktop Photo Printer

I recently purchased the Canon i560s printer in September of 2003. The Canon uses 4 ink tanks. As the inks are used up you only need to replace the color that is empty. This is much nicer than many other manufactures'' setup where the cyan, magenta, and yellow tanks are combined into one print cartridge. The Canon replacement cartridges are also about half to a third (list price) as expensive as other brands. This could lead to a significant savings over the years and was, in fact, the primary reason I chose this printer.

While the specifications on Canon''s web site for this printer list it as having no USB cable included, my particular model did come with a 5 foot USB 2.0 cable. Perhaps that is what distinguishes the "i560" from the "i560s". At any rate, the inclusion of the cable saved me a few dollars and the trouble of getting another cable.

The setup of this printer was a no-brainer. Just had to remove the packing material, install the print head and ink tanks, then install the driver. There is a "quick start" sheet that guides you through all this. I''d expect the average user to be up and printing in about 15 minutes.

The print quality is very good for text and excellent for photographs. Especially good photographs can be produced on the included sample pack (5 sheets) of 4" x 6" Photo Paper Plus Glossy. I would rate the quality of a photo print on par with the pictures you get back with regular film developing. The Photo Paper Plus even has about the same thickness and consistency as that from a film developer. If you take the output from this printer and drop it on the floor a few times, bend it, and wrinkle it slightly, it will be just like pictures coming back from bulk developers. It takes less than a minute (50 seconds in high quality mode) to print a 4x6 print. The colors are as good as I''ve seen on a 4-color printer and nearly as good as high-end 6-color inkjets. You have the option of borderless printing on any size stock, up to 8.5" x 11"

For day to day printing, back off the printer setting from high quality to either standard or draft. The latter modes print much faster. The draft mode quality is certainly decent enough for printing out email and the like. You''ll want to switch to at least "standard" mode for printing out your resume or term papers. I tested a 30 page draft mode gray scale (black only) document and printed it with the following results: Time to start printing first page, 20 seconds. Time to print all 30 pages: 10 minutes, about 20 seconds per page. NOTE: the source for this document included only scanned 8.5" x 11" B/W images on each page, total file size 253MB.

There is a status indicator (in the printer queue status) that shows about how much ink is available for each color, so you''ll know in advance when you''ll need more. In the print driver you have the ability to set the printer to automatically shut off after several minutes of inactivity (user settable) and auto power on when you print again. There is a USB port on the front of the printer to directly print from supported digital cameras Canon Bubble Jet Direct compatibles only. This would be handy if you want to print out a quick snapshot without bothering to boot your computer first.

I''ve seen comments in other reviews that the paper trays seem flimsy. I believe they will hold up fine if not subjected to undo abuse.

This printer was just released so it remains to be seen how it hold up long term. However, it basically is the same as the Canon i550, but faster. I would expect it to hold up as well as the i550. From what I''ve seen, the i560 is about 30% more expensive than the i550. For that relatively small amount, the i560 is a good investment considering its faster print speed.

Update:

After a few weeks of use, I have the following comments to add:

Printing a test document that is about half text, half color screen shots, 102 letter size pages took 16 minutes 20 seconds in draft mode. Average speed: 9.6 seconds / page. Text looked fine, graphics are quite readable, but solid colors have a noticeable screen pattern to them. Same document in standard mode took 32 minutes. Average speed: 18.8 seconds / page. Text was very good and somewhat better than draft mode. Graphics were noticeably much sharper. Printing a 8 x 10 inch color photo on plain paper gave the following results: Draft mode 18 seconds, output looks a bit fuzzy (comparable to inkjet''s best modes a couple of years ago) also some slight banding. Color is a bit weak, but plenty good for school projects for example. Standard mode took 35 seconds, and was again much better than draft mode. Standard mode skin tones are a bit pink. High Quality mode takes 1 minute 34 seconds per 8 x 10 print. Again, this Canon excels at printing photographs and even on plain paper the output is quite good. By printing on special glossy photo paper, it is as good as I''ve seen from a four-color printer. Plain paper tends to curl when using it to print photographs.

Overall I''m still very pleased with this printer. Though (as with virtually all printers) the average print speed is much slower than claimed on the box, it''s pretty fast for an inkjet. (I was able to get about 20 b/w pages per minute in "custom 5" mode, but the print quality suffers greatly.) For day-to-day printing, I leave the printer in draft mode for speed and ink savings. The above-mentioned 102-page document looked good enough in draft mode for use and as a bonus, draft mode is basically twice as fast as standard mode. I''ve currently printed a bit over 500 pages (about 20 were large 8x10 inch photographs). When printing photographs, the special photo paper is expensive, but well worth it. The three ink tanks for color are still about half full, the black is just about ready to be replaced. Also, I mentioned above that Canon includes a printer monitor that has a graphic display of the remaining ink for each color. Unfortunately, I believed this was how it worked. In reality, it shows all the inks full until one of the ink tanks is nearly spent, then displays that ink as low level. Upon more closely checking the documentation, it is mentioned that the display will only show when the ink is at a low level.

I bought this printer back in October of 2003. So far, this Canon has proven itself to be very fast, reliable, and economical. There is an option to use "draft" mode for the purpose of conserving ink. This is a great feature to have if you print a lot of text, like I do. The black ink cartridge is also relatively inexpensive. I bought this particular printer because I print a lot of text. My main criteria was keeping the cost per page as low as possible. I rarely print photos, but the few that I have printed on Canon''s paper looked very nice.

I like the design of the printer. You can fold the paper holder in the back forward and it will act as a dust cover to keep the inside of the printer clean. You can also close the front of the printer as an added measure to keep the inside free of dust. The i560 is a little bit more expensive than comparable printers from other brands. However, I believe that the lower cost per page will more than make up for it in the long run. There are individual ink cartridges. And the ink cartridges do not have a smart chip built into them. It might be possible, although I have not tried it, to refill the cartridges yourself if you can find the right ink. However, I think the cost of the ink cartridges for this particular printer is low enough that I would recommend buying only the genuine Canon ink, that way you can eliminate most of the problems that people experience with generic or refilled ink cartridges. I was told that a lot of problems that people have with their ink jets are due to using generic or refilled ink cartridges.

If you are looking for a desktop printer (not the portable ones such as Canon''s i70) then you just cannot get better than this. I include Epson''s PhotoPlus 2200 and HP''s PhotoSmart 7960, both of which are great printers but Canon wins hands-down in terms of ink longevity, photo quality (on professional photo paper,) and price (you can get deals for 85 USD for instance.)

The printer flies with B&W text, e.g., while printing websites off the web browser. The setup is breezy and hassle-free. With PictBridge built in, will connect directly to your digicam for printing on paper -no need to transfer the file to your computer, then print from Adobe Photoshop etc.

For a home printer, given that the Epson, the HP and Canon are more or less the same in picture quality, the most important thing I have realized is that I need to keep ink cartidge replacements in check. Canon blows its competition out of the water in this respect.

And that''s for the maintenance costs. Even for the upfront costs, this printer is unmatched either by Epson''s 2200 or HP''s 7960.

Highly recommended if you are looking for a full-featured home printer.

Quiet Mode Doesn''t just reduce noise. Will also slow the printer''s operation a bit. Why would you want to do this, you may ask? I ran in draft mode and the printer was so fast it sucked the paper from the paper tray at an impressive speed ... so fast that it can feed the paper slightly askew and almost throw it across the room on eject. In "standard mode" plain paper printing can be so fast the ink hasn''t completely dried. So ... it can sometimes be a good thing to slow this creature down a bit and Quiet Mode is the way to do it. I run that way all the time and life is good.

Ink Cartridges have no "stale date" Don''t make yourself crazy trying to read the dotted characters at the package bottom to read a date into it. They''re lot numbers, not encoded dates. Unlike all HP cartridges and most Epson cartridges, Canon just doesn''t date its ink. It "seems" that ink cartridges without self contained print heads have very long shelf lives since there are no internal jets to clog as the sealed cartridge ages. I will believe the Canon rep on this one since it makes sense, although I''m always more comfortable knowing the age of the ink. Like many of you I want a reserve of ink "at the ready" so I just buy from a retailer that always has a fresh supply like Best Buy, Staples, OfficeMax and probably Amazon.

The Nozzle Game Don''t let the salesman sell you a more expensive Canon (I860, I960) because it "has more nozzles". More nozzles doesn''t mean anything in terms of printer resolution or precision. Each cartridge has a certain number of nozzles, no matter what printer it''s used on. I believe Black has 320 and color 512 except yellow which has 256. The I560 holds 4 cartridges and if you do the math has 320+512+512+256=1600 nozzles. The I860 has an extra 256 nozzles but that''s only because is can hold a 5th cartridge (black with 256 nozzles). Ditto with I960 which holds 6 cartridges at 512 nozzles each for a whopping 3000+ nozzles. So, consider the advantages of having more cartridges and the essence of these cartidges but don''t be led to think that high nozzle counts means it prints better.

Warrantees and Print Heads Just be aware that unlike HP printers the Canon I-Series has one installable print head which will likely determine the useful life of the printer. Since the cartridges do not have print heads they are less expensive, but they do not contribute to the useful life of the printer. I do know that the apparently simple and little print head is claimed by Canon to have a lot of electronics in it and is the most expensive component of the printer. So ... when it goes, the printer goes (costs around $70-$80). Canon expects their print heads to last 1-3 years, maybe more, and their $50 extended warranty covers it. I was tempted to buy the $30 extended warranty from Best Buy but was told the print head is a "consumable" and won''t be replaced. So ... Buyer Beware on warrantees and expect to surrender your beloved Canon when the print head goes.

Enjoy your Canon and treat yourself to a new one every couple years or so. I''m very happy with my I560 and Canon support for this and my LiDE50 Scanner has been solid. (I pay for the phone call and in return they offer me courtesy, knowledge and they even speak English.)

Everyone is blown away by the quality photo prints I show them when I use the glossy plus paper. (I have also tried Kodak paper by the print turns out not acceptable.) I wanted to buy the s9000 but after using the i560, I don''t feel the need for more. In fact, I used a laser printer for most of the stuff and this printer is now used for photo only!!! This printer is so much more quiet and MUCH MUCH faster than the Epson (785) I just broke. I have had this printer for several months and have only recently been printing stuff on a regular basis. The cartridge says it is good for 2300 pages, and that goes by quickly. The replacement cost is $83+ dollars, which is nearly half the cost of the printer. That is roughly 3.6 cents a page. I suppose this is okay, but $83 seems high to me. Must be fantastic technology involved.

Otherwise the printer works very fine.

Solid, comfortable printer nice "office" feel. Load up the drivers and away you go at least with Mac and through Airport. Other reviews make a fair point about being a bit noisy I have it sitting on a fairly hollow wooden cupboard which may accentuate this issue. However for usual home printing regime I can''t see this being a big issue for most.

I got this printer for $150 and thought it was a steal. It prints very well, although it''s pretty noisy. However, after being aware for several years of the contradiction of cheap inkjets -manufacturers would practically give away the printers because they charged roughly $3500 a gallon for ink -I realize that I have been suckered. Yes, this printer is inexpensive, but it quickly runs out of ink and you have to buy the shorter-life, more expensive CE505A cartridges (about $88) instead of the more cost-effective CE505X cartridges (less than twice the price, but three times the number of pages). So if you want to be able to use the 505X cartridges, you should buy the printer that uses those. Also, Amazon doesn''t sell the CE505A cartridges, so I had to buy mine from Staples. I hate feeling like a sucker!

I''ve had my HP 2300n LaserJet printer for 8 months, and I''m very satisfied with it. It''s my second HP LaserJet. My first was a LaserJet IIID which I bought in 1992 and still use today. I wouldn''t have bought the 2300n except that some movers handled my IIID roughly and damaged the duplexing unit which I had been using almost constantly. It really saves paper and file space to print on both sides.

When not in use, the 2300n goes into a power-down mode which is silent and makes it seem to be turned off except that an indicator light lets you know it''s still on. Send a print job to it while powered down and it immediately springs to life and processes the task just as if it had not been powered down at all. This is a great feature because the machine does not wear itself out whirring away, making noise and using energy as the IIID does when not turned off.

The 2300n is fast. The IIID''s speed of 8ppm was considered fast when I bought it, but after getting used to 25ppm, I''d hate to give it up. The 2300n prints at a pace I associate more with photocopiers.

My IIID had excellent print quality until last year, about 11 years after I bought it. The output has become dirty. It needs cleaning and servicing, but that''s not practical now, especially considering that I live far from a service center and my 12 year-old IIID printer weighs 75 pounds.

By comparison, the thirty-one pound 2300n is much easier to lift and move. I also like the fact that it takes up much less space than the IIID does, and it doesn''t have those paper trays protruding out of it. The paper is nicely tucked away inside, where it should be, in an easy to open drawer. To accomplish this, the machine is intelligently designed to be slightly taller which is not a problem at all, just a better use of space.

The IIID has only 300 dpi resolution which is fine for text, but not so fine for graphics. The 2300n prints beautiful graphics, not in color, of course, but when I want color, I use an inkjet. When I want to print a picture with the 2300n, the high resolution is very nice.

I''m still using the toner cartridge that came with the shipped unit, but I keep a spare cartridge on hand. A great feature of the 2300n is the economical printing mode. I can easily turn this feature on and off (from within the Windows XP printing menu) and make my toner supply last longer. Unlike with the IIID, which also has an adjustment for toner consumption, with the 2300n, the econo-mode feature takes effect immediately. It makes the print lighter, but it''s still quite readable and appropriate for those times when dark print quality is not needed.

Whenever I think of my HP 2300n LaserJet, I always get a nice feeling. I can''t think of anything I don''t like about it. It takes up little space, It''s fast, It duplexes, It''s economical with time, energy and toner, It''s quiet, It networks, It has wireless capability, It''s plug and play, It has an easy to use control panel on the front, and I feel confident that it will perform whenever I call on it.

I''ve come to trust the Hewlett Packard name for quality and performance. I teach English at a university in Japan where I write and print a lot of educational materials. Purchased this from a local big box store, because Amazon was still selling at list price and there was only one product review. Have used the printer for 3 days now and come to the following conclusions: fast printing, good auto document feeder, good paper handling, good scanning, and easy set up! What''s not to like?

1) printing print quality is very good, and perfect for home school use. This includes photos, and two sided printing.

2) scanning set up to scan wirelessly to 3 different Macs. Scanning of photos, documents worked well. Was able to initiate scans from the printer touch screen and the computer. Worked with both the Flatbed and ADF. We don''t have any specific quality requirements, but output was great for our use.

3) copying copying is fast and quality is good. Copied single sided to single sided and single sided to double sided using ADF. Copying was fast and flawless. Lid is hinged so that it lifts up over thicker items and can handle books of an inch thickness with no problem.

4) set up set up for use on 3 Macs (2 are 10.6.8, and one is 10.7.5). Set up was easy. I didn''t use the disc that came with it, just downloaded from Epson. Wireless network set up was simple and straightforward.

5) AirPrint if you have iPhones and iPads, AirPrint works great with zero set up!

6) no faxing here, so I have no comments on that.

Before i found the 3540, I was hesitating on buying the Work Force 845 for a couple of reasons: 1) the model was a year old, and 2) issues with handling thick paper. Well, the 3540 model is new and in my tests, it handled photo paper through the rear slot and paper tray with no issues.

I whole heatedly recommend this printer.

To those who are looking for ink usage, I''m afraid I''m not very scientific on that front. We home school 2 children (8th and 10th grades) and this is the primary printer / copier. In other words, it gets a lot of use. My thoughts on ink usage are: better than the HP it replaced (an older Officejet 5500), better than the Canon we use mostly for photo''s (iP6600D), but not quite as good as my Brother MFC-J6710DW. BUT, the print quality on the Epson is much better than on the Brother.

Having said all that, my qualitative assessment is that the ink usage is pretty good. We have gone through one black and two color cartridges. The printer reports having printed:

223 color pages

446 b/w pages

Unfortunately, I can''t tell you what the counts were when cartridges were replaced.

A recent review at PC World (), has the ink costs as a little above average. The comments from PC World:

March 19th, 2013 Long story short, I hate modern day printing. Doesn''t seem to matter if you buy inkjet or laserjet, there are almost no decent printers on the market today which can print reliably for under $200 and do not use the silly f#$%@#! microchip ink cartridges or laserjet toner cartridges. In the ole days, printers were heavy as hell and didnt print fast, but they didnt break down often either, and ink was dirt cheap. (When ink costs more than blood banks charge for human blood plasma, you know your taking it in the butt :)

The current business model for most printer companies (Epson, Canon, Brother, Lexmark, etc..) is to roll out unfinished, a super duper technological wizard of a printer which unfortunately is fragile as hell, and for whom only three out of ten software/firmware functions actually work on release day. You are left with a half-baked printer that works occasionally if you sacrifice a goat during a solar eclipse. And, even if you do manage to get the thing to work, you will need to mortgage the house to pay for the ink (you didn''t think the microchips on each ink cartridge were there to improve printing resolution did you?). Since pigment based printer ink is sold for $9 per gallon (about 3.7 liters) in Sri Lanka, you can be pretty sure it does not cost $15 for one tiny single color cartridge in first world countries. The only real way out of this mess to start spending in the $1000 range or higher for a real office printer that is built to withstand heavier duty use.

In the past ten years, I have owned four other printers before this; a heavy ole Lexmark that smelled bad and was slow, but never failed until my wife spilled her coffee in it (or I would still have it with a smile on my face). An older Brother machine that mysteriously died on me (it was not bad either) and two Canon MultiPass/Pixma pieces of s$@!. In particular, the Canon ink was outrageous in price and I was always going to third party ink suppliers to save money. I love Canon high end cameras, but their lower price printers have always failed me.

So after my latest Canon MP 830 stopped working (to be fair, it never worked that well on its best day), a frown formed on my face as I knew I would have to spend time researching another super crapper to take its place. Fortunately, Amazon shows real reviews from people who actually purchased the products (I will address the Vine program in a moment) they are reviewing. Out of all the lower cost printers, one Brother monochrome laser jet and the Epson 845 Workforce stood out, when only real reviews were counted. I need the ability to print in color from time to time plus scanning so the 845 spiked my interest. Checking the Epson website, I saw the WF 3540 which is the 845 rebuilt for 2012. So with some trepidation, I ordered it from Amazon.

It came and I began setting it up. With its rounded edges and black facade, it sure looks nice, was a first impression. For myself, I run Windows 7 from two computers and Debian/Mint/Ubuntu on the other three. I set it up in Windows 7 first and it printed fine, copied fine, scanned fine and the Wi-Fi worked fine. Step one okay so far, and further than Canon ever made it. Next I printed from Ubuntu and Debian and that worked fine. Great. Then the tricky part of getting wi-fi working with my Mint laptop. Even that worked fine. So far so good (and more than I expected).

I then tested out some of the Epson software features like WebPrint, Epson Connect, Event Manager and Download Manager, and they all worked as promised. (from Windows 7). Unfortunately, these software programs are not available for Linux users, but I knew this from reading the product details. I did not test for Apple OSs because I only use those at work. Got to say, aside from the few Linux lapses, I was fairly surprised by this point. The iPrint software did work fine from my Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone. (Did not test the Apple AirPrint option) Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I tested Google Cloud Print, and it works just fine. You can also sync the software to Google Drive (online cloud storage).

I will say the ink prices look like they will be middle of the road. Certainly not the high prices of Canon or Dell, but not dirt cheap. This Epson 3540 has four ink tanks for standard Epson pigment based ink (not dye based), and the ability to install ultra high capacity tanks as well. A check at third party vendors also shows generic ink available at cheaper prices as well. I will just be happy if I have a refill once every six months to one year. With Canon, thanks to their firmware coding, all tanks were used even for grayscale printing, resulting in expensive ink purchases and a loud tirade every three months or so. With this Epson 3540, when you check the tab under printer properties for grayscale printing, the Epson WF 3540 does indeed print only from the black tank. Thank you Epson for not shafting me.

Since the initial setup, it has been about four months, and so far everything is working well. My only minor problem has been that when I wish to print on 4x6" inch photo paper, the roller does not grab the paper sometimes (but all other paper sizes are grabbed fine did not try envelopes). I also find the photo reproduction quality to be just fine, but I am not a photography specialist. If you are really in to high quality photo printing you may want a seven ink tank printer. Most cheaper printers work well for the first few months and then start failing, so I will update this review at the one month, three month, six month, one year and three years marks (if it lasts that long). I never give an initial computer product a five star review, so I will wait and see how it continues to function. The fifth star can only be earned by durability over the long haul. My relation with printers over the last ten years has been miserable, so hopefully, this Epson WF 3540 will be the start of a better relationship.

As to the one star reviews for this printer, reading install directions and setting up drivers is paramount, especially if you want wireless printing to work. This printer does work very well indeed, but you must be meticulous in setting up the drivers correctly to receive their fully functionality. Some people have complex work environments with Windows, Mac and Linux computers all in the same home or office. For them, setting up the printer in the correct order (printer driver first, then hardware USB cable, etc..) is critical. Obviously, if you dont do this, you are likely to run into wireless problems, especially in a mixed OS environment. With Windows 7, you must head to control panel -> network and sharing center -> change advanced sharing settings, and then make sure that network discovery, file sharing and printer sharing are turned on, and that your home network (and ideally, homegroup) are set up correctly. If not, your wireless laptop is not going to see the Epson WF 3540 (whether it is stand alone or connected to your desktop by USB cable). There is also a correct install order to the print drivers and if you install the Epson Connect after the main lump driver package, it will over write the previous registry values in the kernel and you will have to redo the Wi-Fi setup wizard on the printer touchscreen (no biggie, but this stumps many buyers I suspect). (this is true for Windows and OS X 10 and Mountain Lion). Many of the problems people complain of, are with Windows XP, but come on guys, the kernel for XP was written in 1999. It is like asking your 1999 Chevy Cavalier to perfectly mesh with Onstar Live.

One positive and negative about the WF 3540 is the software suite. The good news is that each program actually does a needed function and is coded correctly, and works in Windows 7 64 bit. The bad news is that the total software suite is very large (almost 750 MB installed) and you are left with about twelve entries under My Programs. You can choose which ones to install thankfully and several (like Epson WebPrint, Epson Connect, the Fax stuff and the online stuff) are not really essential if your main mission is just printing, copying and scanning.

As to the Amazon Vine Program Cancel it Amazon admins, .... please. As any idiot in Congress knows firsthand, receiving donations to your campaign from health care companies makes fair impartial judgement on a health care bill almost impossible. The same is true for sending select semi-pro reviewers free printers (or any other products). It is pretty hard to give a printer a one star review if you received it for free. This Epson WF-3540 page is filled with Amazon Vine Program reviews all of which are questionable from the start. Rarely do I see Amazon make a misstep, but this would be one. Reconsider the Vine Program please.

Finally, about one out of every 17 people rate this review as not helpful, which has me curious. Interested to see what people will note.

I reviewed the Epson WP-4540 some time back which is the big brother to this machine, and whereas the 4540 has a bigger footprint, slightly faster speed, double paper tray, and some other features, this unit excels at it''s job, for less money, and the addition of air print comparability from your smartphone.

It''s still a bulky unit, the delivered package is 24 pounds, and you need a reasonable amount of room to set it up.

That''s not a problem however with Wifi, so you don''t have to have it sitting next to your computer. A central location actually works well so everyone in the house can connect for shared printing.

Big question for all printers is of course ink, like it it''s big brother the 3540 takes 4 cartridges, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and of course Black, and these run individually almost $10 cheaper per unit than the 4540.

I would recommend the Epson brand ink, and definitely the XL cartridges, they are worth it for longevity. Also, i continue to run my cartridges long after the on screen low ink warning, and they do seem to last well. You can also save on multipacks, but I would suggest staying away from bargain brands.

Ideal for a small office, the multi document feed on top like an old fashioned copier is great for scanning multi documents into a single file, or PDF for easy emailing, and storing. The copy function is also touch and go, without having to constantly lift the lid on the scan bed.

Printing is pretty fast too, for home use printing, even in color.

Overall I gave it 4 stars, with a string of features too long to list here, wireless accessibility, and good ink consumption. Even photo reproduction is good, although probably not quite good enough for pro''s.

This printer is feature rich, yet simple to set up and intuitive to use. It will act as a wireless network printer, a scanner, a full featured copier, and a fax machine.

Installation was a snap, and I had it up and running in under 30 minutes. The printer software does need to be installed on each computer you intend to print from, but after the first computer is done, the other ones go quickly.

Things I liked:

1) Easy set up

3) Color touchscreen on printer is bright and clear, and makes using the machine very simple

4) Excellent printouts

Things I did not like:

1) Nonstandard cordCord is not like a normal one you see on just about all electronic devices today. Not only is the cord nonstandard, it is too short. This caused a little bit of a hassle in getting it plugged into my power strip. Wish they would stick with standard power cord.

2) It is an inkjetwhich means endless $$$ on cartridges, and wasted ink on printhead cleaning if you do not use it that often. I much prefer a color laserject, and home units are coming out that are becoming very affordable.

3) Can not scan directly from photoshop CS5. Tried several things and then found something on the Epson WEB site that indicated that it was not possible to scan directly from CS5, and the work around was to scan using Epson software and then load file into photoshop. Yes, this is a workaround, but boy did I enjoy scanning directly into photoshop when I had lots of scans to do.

Overall, this printer represents a feature rich machine which is easy to use and delivers exceptional results. Well designed, well engineered, and it produces wonderful output. Overall, this machine is a winner.

The printer is very easy to set up. You can print from your iOS device, using AirPrint, directly. Very simple. The printer is easy to unpack, simple instructions on setup, step by step. I was using the printer in less than 20 minutes after lugging the box into the office.

I had a couple of minor issues setting it up on the Mac side (10.8.2). All but one were quickly fixable (item 3 below will take some additional research):

1. Since the default paper tray is 1 (top), if you put a stack of envelopes in tray 1 and then print with the defaults, you''ll print on an envelope, not on the paper in tray 2 (bottom) as you expect. The way I found to get around this was to create a printing "Preset" in Word or any other application. That preset is then available for all other applications. I created a preset that used the "Alternate" tray (tray 2, bottom) so when I want to print on regular paper, I just make sure I pick the Alternate preset. If there''s a better way to do that, I''d like to know about it.

I thought it was cool that Epson thought about giving you two trays and even then, thinking about making one of them for multiple envelopes! This printer seems very well thought out.

2. Scanning didn''t initially work from the EPSON itself (to the Mac from the printer), but after a Mac reboot it worked fine. Probably just a setup issue. It''s been fine since then.

It''s nice in that if you put a stack of pages in the ADF part of the printer and select Scan from the printer, it automatically creates a separate file for you for each page. Using Image Capture from the Mac side worked flawlessly. As with my last printer, you can stack multiple pages into the ADF and then tell the Image Capture Mac application to create one PDF file with all the scanned pages. You can create individual files too if that''s what you want.

3. I wasn''t able to figure out how to get the AirPrint to use Tray 2 (bottom) so I''m currently not able to use that unless I forget about having the stack of envelopes in tray 1, which I''ll probably end up doing. AirPrint prints to tray 1 as the default so for me, it prints whatever, or tries to, to an envelope. There may be a way to configure the EPSON for AirPrint to use tray 2 (bottom); I just haven''t found it yet.

Envelope handling is amazing. You can, as mentioned above, put a stack of envelopes in tray 1 (top) or you can feed them individually from the rear of the printer. Coming from an ink jet printer that totally lacked envelope support, this printer supports envelopes perfectly.

I called the free technical support (toll number) and they were very good and very friendly as well. The only issue I had with support was that nobody I spoke with actually had a Mac. So, at some point, their help became a bit more "high level" when they said: "Could you hold please so I can consult my resources..." The support was still fine and no complaints here, but I figured out the Preset workaround for tray 2 when I was talking to them and actually explained it to them so they could update their ... "resources". I''m sure if they had a Mac they could have figured it out as well.

Hooking up the printer to the Ethernet network was as painless as plugging in the RJ-45 cable. No worries there at all. Not using wireless.

I won''t go into all the features this printer has since you''ve probably already read about them before reading reviews, but I haven''t had anything other than good results. The printer is just great. And, it''s fast.

I recently upgraded to this HP OfficeJet 4620 from a Dell A960. I KNOW, HUGE upgrade.

It took me about 30 minutes to set up, that includes getting it out of the box, putting it together, running the alignment test, and installing the drivers.

Setting up the ePrint was a breeze! They make it so easy for you and I''m most excited about that particular feature. Going to be very convenient since I am always on the go and use my phone for EVERYTHING (don''t we all?).

The complaint from the other reviewer that this printer is noisy I believe to be a fault in that particular printer... this printer is relatively quiet in my opinion but again I must mention that I previously owned an A960 so anything sounds like a whisper compared to that. I personally don''t see why the noise output is a factor at all. Getting nit-picky if you ask me.

The faxing speed is lightning fast. Scanning couldn''t be easier. It prints super fast, and the quality is top notch.

I''m personally very taken with how compact this printer is. It takes up very little desk space (about two stacks of paper in width).

This printer has SIGNIFICANTLY reduced the cost of ink. Very efficient printing, small footprint.

All in all, this little 4 in 1 is quite the powerhouse. I highly recommend it if you''re looking for a quality 4 in 1! I''d give it 10 stars if Amazon let me. :)

I switched from a Brother MFC J415W because it wasted too much ink with its unnecessary ink cartridge cleaning cycles (which could not be turned off) and the print quality wasn''t comparable to HP. Before that I had an HP Officejet 6500a Wireless which I considered a piece of trash because none of the drivers or software never worked properly and the machine froze up frequently. The HP Officejet 6500a was an upgrade from an HP Officejet 6310 which had wonderful print quality and never froze but had no wireless. This HP Officejet 4620 is comparable to the HP Officejet 6310 in most respects except that it is a bit more noisy (but not to the point of it being unbearable). This printer was really easy to set up and it has better execution of the Scan and Fax function (which can be set as the default faxing method) than the HP Officejet 6310, and it can be set up to turn on and off on a schedule in addition to its sleep mode. It doesn''t get five stars because it''s not perfect because of the noise but for faxing, scanning and occasional non-photo color printing, it seems pretty good so far. I don''t think I''d recommended as a primary printer for someone who prints a lot because of the cost of ink cartridges but as a fax, scanner and occasional printer, it''ll work.

Setup was easy, But printing is impossible for the fact that the paper is jammed even before you put paper in the printer. I am an IT pro and quite capable in operating printers and computers but this thing is impossible. I tried multiple weight papers it would not feed most times then again once it fed like 29 sheets at one time. I do not recommend this scanner. 2 hours messing with it and have not been able to make one copy or send one fax. Sending the piece of @%#! back.

I gave it 4 stars because I did not experience the problems the other reviewers had and the cheap paper catcher and the Image Capture do not bother me like it did some. I really like Lion so I wouldn''t go back to Snow Leopard or Tiger just to get the scan feature to work regularly.

This printer is meeting the expectations I have for my needs. I do not print photo quality photos on my HP officejet 4620. I use if for printing art lessons I create which include illustrations and pictures I have painted and photographed myself for teaching purposes. I also print personal finance records and word processing documents. I leave the photo printing to the $300,000 machines at my local CVS or Walgreens by uploading them and either having them mailed to me or pick-up myself. No worries about ink fading there.

After reading extensively on home printers using Apple''s Lion it seemed to be giving MANY some users trouble so this is what I did. I DID NOT use the installation disk. I downloaded the most recent drivers from HP directly and proceeded to install them and by following the SIMPLE prompts. I was able to install the wireless feature quickly and easily using the cord and my modem. I knew the username and password for my provider by calling them in advance of attempting an installation. I have not installed e print as I do not have and use for it at the time but may later. I expect it to be as simple as the wireless function. The ink seems to be lasting at an average rate. Since HP dumped the chip heads on the cartridges the ones for the HP Officejet 4620 are slightly more reasonable. I know to keep the internal heads working I will have to print something each week in both color and b and w. If a cartridge seems to fail early just pop it out and wipe the bottom gently with a water dampened rag to remove dried up ink.

The print quality is good for my needs and fast enough for me. It is slightly irritating to have to use Image Capture to scan a document to the desktop but entirely doable if you know your Mac. I fooled around with the print feature and finally got to the draft scan and grayscale to conserve color ink on un-importatant papers. Just go to the print feature, select type/quality; go to quality and select fast draft; mouse over color and select grayscale then black and white only. I got this printer for $88 because the box had been opened. My last HP was a Photosmart 4280 all in one that lasted 4 years then died. I expect this one to last as long also.

This printer isn''t perfect but its nowhere near as bad as some other review both here and on other sites have made it out to be. It took about 30 minutes to get it set up on the network, due in part to my slow optical drive taking awhile to install the software. As long as you follow the instructions in the book that comes with the printer and then on the computer when you install the software you should have no problems. I love the fact that it has E-print(email documents to your printer) so that if there is something I need to print when I am out I can email it to the printer and have it ready when I get home. It even sends me an email to the same address letting me know that the printing job has been completed. It also does have security features for the E-print so that it can be set up so that only certain email addresses can use it which is comforting. I know some people complained that the scanner was really loud but mine makes no noise whatsoever when it scans, I actually thought that it wasn''t scanning at all until I looked at my computer screen and saw the image on the screen fully scanned.

On the downside it is a bit noisy when it prints and makes some weird noise when it stops printing as well. It also sometimes manages to push the paper in the tray back so the point that it thinks that it is out of paper so you have to push the paper in the tray forward in order to get it to print. The good qualities outweigh the bad and make it a pretty good printer, especially for the price range.

The product I received is not the product pictured. Instead I got the non-wireless version. The original wireless printer was great and lasted four years with heavy usage that''s why I tried to purchase it again. Hopefully this wire version is as dependable. Just be prepared to have to return, refund, and look for another one if you need the wireless feature. I just didn''t have the time to waste doing all that, so now I have a wire sticking out of my laptop.

These labels print out great and look nice. I really like them. I held off on buying an applicator though, and was very disappointed in the applicator. It was cumbersome and hard to use. Another example of Amazon selling office supplies at lower prices than the big-box office stores, this card stock is EXACTLY the same as what the office supply stores sell but at a better price, and delivered free as well! I bought this paper to print a large portion of information cards and it worked well. We''ve been using this brand of card stock for a long time, alongside Xerox brand card stock which is just a tad bit nicer in my opinion. However, for 90% of print jobs this variety works perfectly fine.

My only complaint is that we ordered 5 reams and they all shipped in the same box which was a tad too big. Several of the reams packaging was broken, although the paper itself was fine.

Great paper at a great price. You can''t go wrong here.
