Oh, how I wish I could give this terrible product 0 stars! One star is one too many!

I didn''t expect great prints from a printer with this low of a cost but the initial print quality was only barely acceptable. After just 3 prints, the grays in my pictures started printing as light blue. After 6 prints, the black started printing in streaks and the pink stopped working. Cleaning the cartridges'' print heads fixed the problem for the pink but not the black. If I print out a letter, it is so streaked that it is unreadable. If I print a picture, it is washed-out, blurry AND streaked. After going through all the offical help steps, the official recomemdation is to replace the black cartridge after less than 10 prints! At this rate, it will cost me $3 per page to use this printer!

I needed something that would print at least decent quality pictures and text this was not it!

Be warned YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Spend little get VERY little in return! If you want a decent ink jet printer stick with HP, or possibly Epson or Canon. Do NOT waste your money on a Lexmark product.

WHERE DO I BEGIN?? The ink catridges dried up after a few weeks of not using it and now it also says the device is not recognized by windows, so it is now offically inoperative. From a scale of 1-10 (10 being an expert) I am like 9.5 when it comes to computers. So I''ve done everything possible to reinstall this printer and fix its issues to make it functional again and have made no progress. Windows recognizes the device being connected but is useless because it doesn''t have a driver; when I try to install the driver, the setup program says the device is not connected. What is its recommendations?? (This is the best part) Check to make sure the cable is plugged in and the power light is on. TERRIBLE!!!!!!! I contacted their Tech. support and their response had nothing to do with my problem I inquired about. PATHETIC!! I''m also considering developing a website just to demote anything with the name LEXMARK on it. I hope this review saves a lot of people...

As a multi-page scanner, it works pretty well. It often makes 1 out of 30 pages crooked, but otherwise is really speedy and the software interface is pretty good. It whines if you don''t install printer cartridges, but will still function w/o them installed if you ignore the nags, unlike some other brands that will stop dead in their tracks. Haven''t had a good record w/their flatbed scanners, but this seemed better constructed.

I OWNED A X4270 AND AFTER A MONTH OF USE STARTED GIVING ME PROBLEMS

IT''S NOT WORTH A PENNY.

Given the relatively low price of this machine, you need to temper your expectations for this. As a previous Lexmark owner, I wanted to get another Lexmark that used the same size 70/71 cartridges because I found this size to be readily available at places like Costco, Walmart, and Target.

This machine does an adequate job for light usage. Since I only use this for copying, printing, and faxing documents, I changed the print settings to black & white only. I find that this increases print speed and reduces overall printing costs. It clearly is not the best all-in-one out there, but, for the price, it does a satisfactory job.

HP OfficeJet Pro K850DN ( C8178A#A2L )

HP OfficeJet Pro K850DN
  • Money-saving solution
  • Skip the high-cost print shop: Produce marketing materials yourself for as little as 2.2 cents per page in black, 8.4 cents in color
  • Automatic two-sided printing accessory handles paper up to 13 by 19 inches
  • Get sharp results with output resolutions up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi color
  • Print in volume for less with the four individual ink cartridges; replace only the colors you use and go for longer without switching high-capacity inks (monthly output is 6,250 pages)

We now have three of the K850 printers in use, one with a built in print server, second paper tray, and duplexer. So far, the printers have proved to be reliable, fast, and comparatively inexpensive to operate. Power on, pre-print, and post-print noise may be objectionable to users who are located close to the printer.

Capable of using the same HP 10 black and HP 11 individual color ink cartridges, as well as replacement print heads as the HP Business Ink Jet 1100d and HP Business Ink Jet 1200d, the K850 shares the same low, per page operating cost as the 1100d and 1200d printers. Full page color photographs print in roughly 32 seconds, with a roughly eight second delay prior to the start of printing; similar prints from other printers may require from one to five minutes to print the same full page color photograph. White horizontal lines were present in the full page color photograph, possibly indicating that one or two of the nozzles in the print heads, shipped with the new printer, are defective.

The printer handles paper sizes up to 13" x 19", so it easily handles B size (tabloid, 11" x 17") paper commonly used for small engineering prints and foldable newsletters. The printer software installs without problem, although a reboot will likely be required. For network capable K850 printers, the software install automatically finds K850 printers on the network, and adds a "HP Standard TCP/IP Port" to the computer configuration for communication with the printer. For non-network capable K850 printers, both USB and parallel port connections are supported.

Positives:

* Uses ink that is compatible with other printer models, helping to keep operating costs down.

* Fast printing for full page color, and even faster black printing with spot color.

* Large format color printing, which is helpful for quick generation of engineering prints.

* Nearly idiot proof print cartridge replacement light turns on to indicate the color that needs to be replaced, printing stops automatically, user replaces ink cartridge, and printing continues.

* Separate ink cartridges and print heads means less aligning of print cartridges/heads after ink cartridge replacement, larger capacity ink cartridges, and lower operating cost.

Negatives:

* Minimal install of HP software from the CD requires at least 100MB.

* Low capacity HP 13 print cartridges ship with the printer.

* Power-on, pre-print, and post-print noise, just like the Business Ink Jet 1100d and 1200d. However, there is very little noise produced while printing.

* Cheap plastic cover over the print cartridges, similar to that used on the 1200d.

* Large footprint.

Having read the reviews, I was worried about the duplexer. I called HP and was generally reassured so I bit the bullet and ordered the machine. So far I am very impressed: setup was a breeze, print quality is as expected, and the duplexer works great. I am printing 70 page double sided documents, small volume (maybe 700 pp month) and so far the printer has worked without a hitch.

I like the output from it and the networking is very nice, but the back side of prints are offset about .5 inches from the front side. HP''s support was very bad (although they did send me a new duplexer eventually which still did not solve my problem). After awhile I gave up on trying to get it fixed. All and all I wish I had purchased something else because duplexing is the only reason I got this printer. For someone who does not care that much about the duplexing option, I am sure it would be fine though.

I bought this printer because I do a lot of 11" x 17" printing. It serves that function well, although as other have reported the duplex unit does not function well (paper jams). The duplex unit works well on legal size. Printing in the "fast normal" and "draft" modes is fast, partially because each new sheet is fed immediately after the previous, so there is no gap in time from printing one sheet to the next. Printing of Letter size in "draft" mode is startingly fast when compared to other ink jets. Ink is easy to replace and the reservoirs are big in the model 10 and 11 cartridges. I previously used an HP 9800 and this is a dream comparitively becasue the ink lasts so much longer and each color can be replaced uniquely rather than the tricolor cartidges of the 9800. I am happy with my 850dn choice and would buy it again. I wish I would have bought the 850 the first time rather than the less expensive 9800.

This is a great printer. We are an architecture firm, and purchased it because it handles 12x18 paper (for half-sized drawings to scale). This printer has proven to be extraordinary at handling the marketing materials, permitting us to print on heavy weight cardstock through the rear flat feed option. Also, when you need to shoot out a 100 page document in a hurry, set this on the fast normal setting, and it simply flies through the job (the draft setting, while still faster, actually shoots the paper onto the floor). We analyzed the per sheet cost, and it works out to less than 3 cents a sheet for the color ink (presentation type) stuff we do, which is competitive. I really do wish I could get a larger paper tray or additional paper trays for the printer though.

I do agree with the other reviewer about the duplexing it really isn''t reliable, but I have yet to find an inkjet that handles duplexing well. While I wish we could save more trees, we just print single side for now.

Epson C12C890191 Stylus Pro Ink Maintenance Tank Save 14% off

Epson C12C890191 Stylus Pro Ink Maintenance Tank
  • Replacement ink maintenance tank
  • Compatible with Epson Stylus Pro 4000, 4800, 7800, 7880, 7900, 9800, 9880, 9900, and 11880

The ink tank for the 4800/7800/9800 is a simple plastic box filled with paper absorbent. Thirty five bucks is way too much to pay for such a simple device. You can "refurbish" the tank with a roll of toilet paper. Remove the lid from the tank, remove the cardboard tube in the center of the roll and cut the toilet tissue in half with a bread knife. The two halves will just about fill the box to recreate the absorbent. Here''s the kicker. The printer reads a chip on the tank and remembers the last two tanks, and maybe more. It will not let you reinsert and reuse a recently used tank even if it has been "refurbished". If you have a buddy with the same printer you can switch refurbished tanks to fool the printer.

I was nervous when the right-side maintenance tank on my Epson 9900''s warning light came on 90% full. I had no idea what a maintenance tank was or how difficult it was to change it, but the Epson 9900 guide does warn that if one of the maintenance tanks become completely full, the machine will cease to print. I ordered the part from Amazon, double-checking the tank model #, which should be compatible with my machine. It was delivered quickly. I was amazed how easy it was to change, it just slides right in and out of the machine. Tip to extend the life of your maintenance tank if you have an Epson 9900 or similar model that has a left and right tank, the right tank will fill a LOT faster then the left one, so when you notice the right tank at around 50%, swap the left and right tanks. Also, this tank works on both the right and left sides, they are cross-compatible, so you not need to keep a left-tank and right-tank around, just one backup maintenance tank will be fine, you can use it in either side.

There is not much to this in tank, but you since Epson is the only one who makes it, they can charge a massive profit for it. Amazon is probably the cheapest place to get it though. You can take out the filled absorbent fibers and use lots of tissue or paper towels until you get a new one. But you can''t reset the maintenance tank on the printer from what I know.

Canon Pixma iP1800 Photo Inkjet Printer (1855B002)

Canon Pixma iP1800 Photo Inkjet Printer
  • Maximum 4800 x 1200 color dpi with microscopic droplets as small as 2 picoliters
  • Borderless 4" x 6" photo in approx. 70 seconds
  • Easy borderless photos up to 8.5" x 11"
  • ChromaLife100 system for long lasting, beautiful photos
  • Pigment black ink for crisp, sharp text

This printer produces decent output for this price range. Real-world Speed is quite good and appropriate for any occasional printing. A bit on the wide side but does not occupy too much desk space. My main complaint however, is that Canon (like most other printer manufacturers for low-end printers) sells the black dye and color ink cartridges at a very steep price. The black cartridge only comes with 11 ml of ink and the color cartrige comes with only 3 ml for cyan, magenta or yellow. So be ready for high costs per printout. At first, I thought this printer would be appropriate for the occasional printout but each (full) cartridge replacement costs ¾ of the printer''s initial cost. Therefore, I cannot recommend this printer. Get a higher end model even if you do not expect to print that much as long-term costs will be lower.

I needed to replace my HP8150 Printer. My Hp hit the skids during the "simple" operation of changing the ink. A tiny piece of plastic broke off and that doomed the printer.

The Canon PIXMA iP 1800 was interesting as the price was low and it was only one of a few printers available that were not either small photo printers or the all-in-one printers. I already have a fax machine and a scanner, so I was not going to spend the money for things I did not need.

I needed a printer that could print some picture and also deliver printed text.

I also, was looking for simple operation. The Canon is simple to operate. It does what I need it to do.

I bought this locally at a famous low-price leading retailer on an impulse (I needed a new printer anyway). They had it for about 10% less than Amazon which I thought, thought, was a great deal. Little did I know it was not. The old adage does hold true for this printer, "you get what you pay for."

First off, I know the ink cartridges that come with new printers are just to get you started. I printed off 10 4x6''s and the color ink was already showing 1/4 gone. The ink is cheap though but you don''t get a whole lot in each cartridge.

Secondly, the pictures, when I printed them were brighter than what I showed on my screen. So much so that they were almost washed out. I tried adjusting the brightness in the printer options but it didn''t do anything.

Lastly, maybe I''m just used to my other printer, but not having an output tray is a pain!

The only really cool feature that I found was the software that enable borderless printing. It let you automatically crop your photos to fill the whole paper.

If you want a decent photo printer I might look elsewhere.

Want Canon Pixma iP1800 Photo Inkjet Printer (1855B002) Discount?

This printer is one of the best values that I found. The price is within almost anyones budget. But the quality is the same as many of the much more expensive printers. Quite fast and excellent quality for black and white and color photos.

Also, it uses two (2) ink cartridges, one black and white and one color and they are both much cheaper than other printers. One can buy then from Canon for about $20 or less. Thus, if you are like most users who use one more than the other, you can save.

I would recommend this printer to both new and expert users. A great buy.

This is a pretty good printer for the money simple to operate and maintain. I agree with other evaulators who say that the ink goes extremely quickly, especially the color cartridge. As for the reviewer who gave this printer 1 star because it does not come with a USB cable, I have never heard of one that did DUH!
