Samsung SCX-4725FN Network Laser Multifunction Printer, Copier, Fax, Color Scanner

Samsung SCX-4725FN Network Laser Multifunction Printer, Copier, Fax, Color Scanner
  • Multifunction printer, copier, fax machine, and color scanner
  • Zoom and shrink copier functions
  • Prints sharp text and graphics at speeds up to 20 ppm
  • Scanning abilities up to 4800 x 4800 dpi
  • USB, FireWire, and Ethernet 10/100 Base TX (network compatible) connectivity

I purchased this product strictly because of the price. It is wonderful. Scans are easy. Just use a program to acquire the image with the supplied twain driver, which by the way, is a nice piece of software. And fast. Got my samsung hardwired to my network. My wireless laptops can print to it no problem. Wakes from sleep fast, prints fast, and its quiet. Nothing to complain about. It really is like having a full blown office machine in your home.

Update:

My 1 year warrantee ran out 2 months ago. Scanner started to cause vertical black lines to appear on one side. There was probably dust or something on the scanner lens. I cleaned the external glass but it was no help. Since I was beyond the warrantee Samsung referred me to a service center nearby. Just for the hell of it I decided to pick up the printer and jump up and down, hoping to dislodge whatever was causing the blockage. It worked!

I had a problem like this with an old scanner and all I had to do was take off the outer glass and clean the scanner lens. But ... jumping up and down worked just as well.

Original review:

Have had the machine for a year. During that time I used up the included toner cartridge and much of a replacement cartridge, with about 3400 total pages (according to the printer).

It''s given me no trouble at all. Print quality is fine (I''m a home user but I would not hesitate to use this as a small office machine).

Downsides are minor for me, but may not be for others:

1. It''s relatively loud. I have it set to go into sleep mode almost immediately so it doesn''t make any noise in between printing. But it makes a warm up whoosing sound before it prints and the printing itself is relatively noisy.

2. It''s not a network scanner. It can only scan to a computer that is connected via usb.

Other than that I really can''t say a negative thing about it.

Set up is easy, either via the on-board lcd or even better, via a web interface over the network. My advice give it a network address asap via the lcd. Then enter the address as a url in your PC''s browser and you can access all the other settings over an easy to use web page.

Have had no problems at all with the scanner, the automatic document feeder or manual feeder. The included software is rudimentary but is simple and works fine.

One aesthetic issue: The Amazon product image makes it look like the paper tray is a draw. It is not. It''s a fixed tray that protrudes a few inches in front of the printer when the tray contains paper. The protruding portion is covered by an opaque plastic cover. When the paper tray is empty, the front part is hinged so it can be lifted to be flush with the printer (as in the image). This is both a positive and negative. When open, it takes up a little more desk space. But the paper is always in view so you easily tell if you are running low. Personally I never lift up the tray.

Although I did not buy it from amazon, I feel this is the best place to review it. I bought this printer cheaper than it probably should have been. There was an easyrebate involved. So I was thrilled about that.

When I got the box opened it took about 5 minutes to set it up. I installed the drivers and everything was up and running in no time. It was a real breeze. I have it set up via USB connection, so I cannot comment about its network capabilities. I did run a series of tests on its scanning however.

There are a couple of different parameters to set for the scanner. There are the resolution and color settings. For resolution, obviously the higher the resolution, the finer the image. If you are scanning text however, it doesnt require very high resolution. I found all the text on my utility bills legible at 200dpi, just one setting above the lowest resolution. A 2 page document takes up roughly 200kb in grayscale mode when saved as a PDF. IT TOOK ABOUT 5 SECONDS TO SCAN A PAGE THROUGH THE DOCUMENT FEEDER.

2 things surprised me when I scanned this document in the other color modes (true color, 24-bit color, black and white):

1.) The file size remained about the same across all color modes.

2.) The scanning time became much longer for the other color modes.

There is an OCR program included with the software and it requires a resolution of 300dpi, which doesnt make a huge difference in file size or scanning time. But when the OCR program is finished and the document is saved in word format there is a HUGE difference. My 17 page lease took up a mere 285kB when converted to word format. You should only run the OCR programs on pages that are just text though. Running OCR on documents that contain alot of pictures or on poor copies can be problematic. For that just save the scan as a PDF and you''ll be fine.

In the first 3 hours of owning this beauty, I had scanned every important piece of paper in my apartment. I even scanned all of my notes for a current semester at an Ivy League university.

I love this machine, and so will you.

Want Samsung SCX-4725FN Network Laser Multifunction Printer, Copier, Fax, Color Scanner Discount?

Samsung SCX-4725FN Network Laser Multifunction Printer. Price was right, delivered rapidly, does everything it''s supposed to. Configuring the destination for the scanned images is NOT easy. It''s large, the paper-feed is a bit fiddly, and I just wish I''d gotten wireless capabilities built in. But it really is perfectly OK-Fine

We needed to replace a 5 year old Xerox all in one and decided to go with the Samsung 4725FN. The price was hundreds below everything we looked at from HP, Lexmark and Xerox and we''re extremely happy with our purchase. The unit prints very quickly from our mixed Mac and Windows network and the print quality is superb. Setup took less than 5 minutes without looking at the manual. Overall, we highly recommend this printer. The only negative is that you may have a bit of trouble locating toner locally so be sure to keep extras on hand, since you can''t just run over to the corner office supply store and expect to see it on the shelf. Overall a great printer/fax/scanner at an amazing price.

PaperShow Starter Kit Includes Notepad A4 (48 Sheets) Save 3% off

PaperShow Starter Kit Includes Notepad A4, 8.5 X 11 Inches Printer Paper, Digital Pen, PS USB Key and Accessory items
  • PaperShow is the new digital writing kit for digital flipchart work
  • Simply write on the PaperShow digital paper and see your notes projected onto your screen
  • Plug-and-play easy-to-use kit!
  • Easier to use than a flipchart no need to type up notes, simply share work via e-mail or save
  • All PaperShow Pads and Printer Paper use 100% Recycled Paper.

Previous reviewers have given a good overview of how the product works. I will discuss what it can do for you.

PaperShow is optimized for two tasks: annotating PowerPoint presentations, and participating in digital whiteboard sessions. Why, you may ask, would you want to do these things? And how is PaperShow better than a mouse or tablet for these tasks?

First, PowerPoint presentations. The smaller PaperShow paper is designed for you to print your PowerPoint presentation on, in advance. Do this from within the PaperShow application, because it prints your PowerPoint slides in a special way to allow the pen to work. During your presentation, you write on the paper with your PaperShow pen, which gives you a very accurate way to mark up a slide. I found that this was much more accurate and easier than using a mouse or laptop touchpad for the same task. However, it''s similar to using a tablet with a pen stylus. One advantage offered by PaperShow is accuracy: once you print your slides on the special paper, you can underline something very precisely, or write in exactly the place you want the words to appear. This is tough without PaperShow. If you''ve tried it with a mouse, or even a tablet, you''ve experienced lines and marks appearing in the wrong place on screen, or at weird angles. The other advantage of PaperShow is you finish with a copy of your markups, both electronic and on the special paper.

OK, what about whiteboard sessions? This is where PaperShow should really shine. I collaborate remotely with people on many different projects. We have started to use shared whiteboard applications on the web. To use these effectively, you really need some sort of pen input device. In whiteboard applications, PaperShow would be clearly superior to pen tablets because of the paper: you can look at what you are drawing on the paper rather than draw on the tablet and watch the output on your screen. Unfortunately, PaperShow does not work with collaborative whiteboard apps, only with the included whiteboard app. The included app works very well for audiences in the room, but PaperShow is missing the boat without an online, collaborative app or an interface to an existing solution that''s already out there.

If you don''t immediately respond to one of these two applications for PaperShow, the product is not for you. My PowerPoint and local whiteboard sessions are better because of it.

Two suggestions to the manufacturer: spend less money on the packaging, which is very deluxe and expensive. Use the savings to upgrade the included binder with a place to store the pen, instead of the separate pen box. As much quality design effort that went into this product, I''m surprised you didn''t do this already. We are already juggling our car keys, cell phone, laptop, briefcase, etc. when we arrive at a meeting. We don''t need a plastic pen case to keep track of as well.

Second suggestion: include an online, collaborative whiteboard app as described above.

In my role as staff educator, I really appreciate tools that are effective and easy to use. PaperShow has hit the nail on the head with this product. The kit has three main components: a USB key that is both a Bluetooth transceiver and a memory stick, a Bluetooth pen that communicates with the transceiver, and special paper to write on. The pen has a little infrared camera that is able to determine where it is on the paper. The paper, which comes in different sizes (I am using A4 currently), has a grid printed on it to help in writing straight and a "toolbar" printed down the right side. To change the attributes of your pen, such as line thickness, color of what you are writing/drawing, circle and arrow tools, eraser etc., you just touch the pen to the appropriate color or emblem on the tool bar and presto.

Setup is simple but does require an internet connection. I really appreciated the fact that I didn''t have to register or enter any information to get under way. The connection is only needed for downloads and updates to the USB key. This brings up another really good attribute, only drivers are installed on your computer for the Bluetooth and mass storage aspects of the hardware. The program resides on the USB key, making it completely portable to use on any other OS compatible PC. Installation is simply a matter of plugging in the key, pulling the cap off of the pen to turn it on (after you put the battery in of course), and letting the key update and install drivers.

When the program launches, what you have is akin to a white board on your PC. It is capable of being run full screen. Whatever you write on the paper shows up on your PC''s whiteboard. Whatever you write on the paper is in the color of the pen''s ink. But what shows on the white board is whatever color, line thickness or shape you touch on the paper''s toolbar with the pen. Making a colorful and easy to read presentation couldn''t be easier. In the same vein, you can print out PowerPoint slides or imported pictures on PaperShow paper and mark those up too (I have not tried this particular feature yet). I project my virtual white board using my Infocus projector. The result is an impressive new tool in my teaching arsenal.

I first used PaperShow on my Lenovo laptop running Vista. I then took it to work and tried it on my XP system. It worked perfectly on both systems.

The pros:

* Easy to install

* Intuitive to use

* Portable (comes with a nifty little case to carry all of the components and an extra AAA battery)

* Paper replacement is inexpensive

* No programs to install on your PC

* You can save your white boards in PDF, PowerPoint or to the key. You can also email them.

* You can import pictures, print them on PaperShow, and then draw on them on the whiteboard.

The cons:

* It will not work at all on regular paper. You need to keep a stock of PaperShow paper on hand

* To erase things from the white board, you have to make erasing movements with the pen touching the paper where you want to erase, which leaves scribble marks on a spot of the paper you may need to write over.

* You can''t write on the white board with your mouse

* If you want to access online support, you have to register

Overview:

Papershow is an interactive digital writing program you can use at meetings to make presentations stand out and takes the place of flip charts. You can use it on its own or in conjunction with PowerPoint. Included is everything you need to get started: Bluetooth Papershow digital pen; Papershow 256 mb USB key; Note pad for digital flipchart (48 sheets 9.4" x 12.6"); 30 sheets for printing on 8.5" x 11" sheets in inkjet or laser printers; 3 ink refills; 4 colored rings to personalize the pen; a penholder to carry the pen and USB key; and a binder to file and carry the Papershow sheets.

What I liked:

Papershow is very easy to set up and use. Since there is no software installed on the PC, you can use the program on any computer that has Windows XP or Windows Vista. Papershow starts up almost immediately. You have a choice of a variety of colors to use to write on the screen: white, green, blue, red, yellow, and black. You can also choose how thick a line you want to draw on the screen and can select different colored backgrounds on the computer screen. If you make a mistake it is easy to erase the mistake from the screen. You can use sound effects to enhance your presentation. It is easy to save files and you can email documents immediately. It is also very easy to import PowerPoint documents and write directly on those documents.

What I didn''t like:

In order to use Papershow you have to use special paper for both the presentation and printing the document this can get expensive fast. You also have to make sure you put the paper in the printer correctly if you put it in incorrectly, your subsequent writing will appear upside down (somewhat amusing when practicing, but not when making a presentation). The program seems to distort handwriting and often when I wrote next to a PowerPoint presentation, the writing onscreen did not match where I put it on the paper (this can be fixed by recalibrating the pen but again is frustrating during a meeting). When you print a document on the special paper it prints in shades of blue only, which is annoying when you are using charts and trying to differentiate between colors. Although you are supposed to be able to modify the background color of your whiteboard to something besides white, that option did not work for me at all.

Bottom-line:

Papershow has some good points but ultimately the minuses outweigh the plusses.

I thought I''d introduce this product to the teachers I work with when I got it. They liked it, but not enough to try it out in class. I, too, couldn''t think of a good way to incorporate it into class. My expectation upon ordering it was that I could use the pen to write on a pre-created worksheet much like an overhead, but on the computer screen instead. However, these visions were dashed once I opened the box. You can only write on the special paper that is included with the kit if you want your writing to appear on the computer screen. There were a few pieces of blank paper provided, but most of the paper provided was grid paper. I might as well write on the white board as to write on a piece of paper and have it displayed on a computer screen. There were some vague references in the material provided that it might be possible to use this with a power point presentation, but there really wasn''t enough instruction for me to figure out how I might use this software in conjunction with a power point presentation. In the end, I used the product only for a couple of days to write secret messages to my husband from across the room. But, really, that''s not what I''d hoped to use it for. Maybe with better instructional material and the ability to use this on paper other than the expensive paper I''d have to buy from this company online, I might have given it a better review.

OK, what drew me to this pen was the neat things I could use it for with my students. In this technology driven age its great to be able to use a smart board or a projector and have my students construct a story as a whole by coming up to the front of the class and writing their sentence that contributes to the whole. And for that alone, it was valuable.

But there is another kind of value, pocket-wise; Papershow has the ability to bleed you dry. If you want copies you have to be willing to pay more for the paper it uses and that can add up pretty quickly for individual copies. And that is the only reason why I can''t truly recommend this for my own personal use as a teaching age. It just doesn''t offer long term economical use.

Lexmark X7350 All-in-One

Lexmark X7350 All-in-One
  • X7350 AIO 19/25PPM 48X12 USB

I bought this all-in-one about 1 year ago and it worked for about 6 months. After 6 months there was a message that said the print cartridge was low so I replaced them both with Lexmark cartridges. About 1 month later there was a message that stated the wrong cartridges were installed. I rechecked the Lexmark web site to make sure I had the correct cartridges and I did but I replaced them again anyway. Then the error message read ''right cartridge incorrect''. Nothing I did would correct the issue so I contacted Lexmark and they offered to replace the printer at no charge. The replacement printer arrived and did not look as nice as the one I had. It was a reman printer and would not communicate with the PC. After numerous chat sessions with the the Lexmark support staff and two phone calls later (took about 3 weeks) they admitted that the replacement printer was bunk and they would replace it. So I have two X7350s that are mere paperweights and quite possibly there is a third on the way.

This Lexmark is approximately my seventh Ink Jet Printer. I have had good success with the others, but this new Lexmark is the fastest and best thus far. In addition, the FAX capability is phenominal. I serve on a Governor''s committee and in the past have had to drive to review cases for my input. With my new Lexmark I have the pleasure of staying home and have the documents faxed to me and it is amazing the clarity and speed that it has. I have had some experience with Lexmark printers as my wife has one that came with her computer. After years of use, she too has had success and no problems. The others all worked fine, but my new Lexmark works excellently. I recommend consideration of this model when replacement time comes.

I''ve been using this all-in-one for 3 months now. So far, it''s been a great buy. I read reviews that it went through ink cartridges quickly, but with moderate use, I haven''t noticed that problem. Color print quality is ok.. maybe with the upgraded ink cartridges, it would be better. But if I was worried about that, I''d probably have gotten a dedicated photo printer. It''s cheaper to order prints online anyways.

This is the perfect home office unit. Small space required, very functional, easy to setup and use. And the cost, fantastic. Nobody could believe what I paid.

So far this printer/copier 4 in one seems to be a very fine

item indeed. I still have some to learn about how and when

to use 8 1/2 x 14 paper and I haven''t yet needed the fax

capability.

About 2/3 of the reviews I saw on amazon were very complimentary, but I was reluctant to purchase the hp 7210 after seeing some negative reviews about installation, software, etc. Luckily, I saw a pc world review which rated this product as the finest in this price range. They were right (at least for someone with a two year old DELL Dimension with Windows XP and all of the recent OS updates).

Amazing copy quality, great color copying and scanning, installation took about an hour and was easy (I don''t fax much, so I don''t feel qualified to comment on this part).

I highly recommend this all-in-one product for home and small office use.

We had the HP 6210 for about a year. I decided to get a second printer in the house and after reading reviews on Amazon bought the HP 7210. I am SO happy with this printer. The installation went smoothly ( I followed all the directions exactly ) and I found the installation to be more streamlined than previous years.

These are the reasons this printer is much better than the HP6210:

1) It''s visibly faster.

2) You can stack more paper in the printer so it doesn''t run out as often.

3) It''s quieter.

With the HP6210, after about a year, it wasn''t grabbing the paper properly for faxes. That was another reason I decided to purchase a different model this time.

I was so happy with this printer and the price ($249.00) that I bought two more for my high school aged children. For that price, they can have their own printer now and have a printer to take to college.

This printer is fast and convenient. I can fax, copy, scan, and print on the same machine. I like the fact that I don''t need to turn on my PC to fax or copy. I can even send double-sided documents through the paper feeder. Printing double-sided documents is also a breeze.

Although, I still don''t know how much the ink will cost.

Want HP OfficeJet 7210 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier Discount?

I''ve been using the 7210 for the last 3 months. Scanner, FAX, Copier and printer functions have been reliable and of good quality. I use XP and the software interface is not the top of the line package..I often use a third party graphic program to scan images..the default is slower and not as intuitive.

Overall, the 7210 is a good workhorse that quietly supports general office needs.

Why it''s not a ''5''.

Expensive ink replacement

Software for scans only rates a ''3''

Okikidz

This is my third HP Inkjet in about 15 years. They all printed and lasted very nicely and the 7210 is a great replacement for the 8 yr old G55xi I had. But like every one of these printers, the install software was poor. The one on the HP 7210 install disk is the worst yet. On XP Pro it hung up 6 times (add Additional Features) was the last prompt I saw never got a clean install.

MY RECOMMENDATION: GO TO THE HP SUPPORT WEBSITE AND DOWNLOAD THE LASTEST DRIVER. ONLY INSTALL THE BASIC DRIVER AND LET XP DO THE REST. THIS WORKED FLAWLESSLY AND WORKED THE FIRST TIME!!!!

Still a great printer. Would be a 5 and maybe will be if HP ever figures out how to write desktop software.

It is a simple trick, and it works. Just use heavy, glossy paper. It works on CD labels as well as it does anywhere else. They are also easier to peel off and control, and do not cost more than some other plain lighter matte finish labels. I now only use these for the hundreds of CD''s I have to make only a few at a time so I cannot justify a $3,000 printing CD maker, and I use these labels to make them look professional.

Want AVERY CD Labels, Inkjet Glossy, 20 Pack, White (AVE8942) Discount?

I bought this product because I was tired of using boring matte labels, and because I thought their slick surface might make them less likely to peel. Well, I haven''t had any of them peel, but I''m back to using matte labels. You almost have to have a high-resolution photo quality printer to get a good image on this glossy surface. Experiment if you want, but unless you''re a commercial user, this may be beyond your capability and need.

This printer is great and the price is righ too. The print quality is magnificent, the option of using Google''s Cloud print will be very usefull for me because I have a Motorola Droid phone with an 8MP camera, when I go hunting I can send photos directly to the printer so my family can see them. The only one drawback was that the Hero 7.1 does not have a fax machine built in, you have to upgrade up to the Hero 9.1 for this which I was aware of, I just went with this model.

I like that the printer has a separate tray for photo paper and that the printer is front load. Then with the 2 sided printing it is just the perfect setup.

I recently purchased to new Kodak HERO 7.1 printer. I absolutely fell in love with its design. It''s sleek, modern and totally blends in to the room. It''s more of an AV equipment look than a rough eye sore like other printers. The glossy black, brushed aluminum are just not what I''m used to in a printer. It''s so eye catching that I don''t feel like I have to hide it in my living room.

In addition to its great aesthetic design, the printer is loaded with amazing features. The WiFi, Google Cloud Print, Print from my iPhone are amazing. My favorite (although seemingly simple) is that they included two trays to hold my 8.5x11 and 4x6 paper!!! This makes life so much easier than having to always switch sizes. The option of the touch screen is great as well. My wife uses this to print from her SD card instead of loading the pictures to her computer first.

Also, the print quality is great from Kodak, and their ink prices can''t get any cheaper!!! $24 for a black and color combo. My old EPSON would cost me over $80 for ink.

All around this is one awesome printer. I just can''t get over how great it looks. I''m so happy with this product. I totally recommend getting one of your own.

the other manufacturers charge way too much and way too many cartridges to choose.

Want Kodak HERO 7.1 Wireless Color Printer with Scanner & Copier Discount?

Am well pleased with my new Hero 7.1! I was a previous Kodak printer owner and pleased with the former printer capabilities. Love the clean lines of this unit...other printers I chose from were dinosaurs: huge, cumbersome, and take up a large footprint of space. This is far more compact, and I love that about it. Needed a printer that print photos as well, and this one has a separate tray for print stock. No one can beat Kodak on color prints. Did not need the "autofeed copy feature" and that adds quite a bit to the size of a printer. Wasn''t expecting touchscreen capabilities so was pleased it includes that feature. Decided against HP printers as their toners are like rebuying the printer each time you need to replace cartridges ($$$). While you do have to buy toner cartridges more often, I typically print daily docs in blacktone, saving the color for photo printing. Color copies and photos can''t be matched by the other brands. Did have a bit of trouble setting it up for wireless printing (WiFi) via AT&T U-Verse with the enclosed DVD but simply visited the Kodak website and downloaded the driver/files from their website. Wouldn''t change a thing about the new printer Love It!

UPDATE 3/4/12: Color cartridge officially empty. Black shows about 1/4 left. Not too shabby. And surprising to say the least.

UPDATE 1/6/12: I''ve printed a decent amount of pictures since the initial review, and still haven''t had to change the ink cartridge. The ink level monitor shows them both as being about 3/4 full. It''s a mystery.

Setup was easy. Features and machine aesthetics are great. Easy to use. The separate tray for photo paper was the reason I chose this model over the 5.1 printer. The larger touchscreen is also an advantage. But the claim kodak makes for their inks being least expensive to replace? The color cartridge is already tapped after only printing around ten pictures. (Although I have no complaints about the quality of said pictures.) At 20 bucks a pop, that''s 2 bucks a print, (not adding in the cost of paper). Not sure that sits too well with me. I''m hoping I''m just doing something wrong, or that I''m able to find a better price for ink. Perhaps a generic compatible? Even here on amazon you only save 2 dollars each color cartridge. Other than that sort of major fault, I''m quite happy with the printer itself.

This printer has done exceptionally well on all of the jobs I have had it do thus far. Printing is fast, I can leave it on all the time, and it was simple to network with my AirPort. This is also one of the few printers that actually comes with good Mac drivers for older systems and because of that, I was quite pleased. My only small gripe (which is more of a gripe to the entire printer industry) is the fact that they do not ship with a USB-A to USB-B adapter so you have to buy one or use your old zip drive''s or camera''s. All in all, for a black and white printer, it can''t be beat in price or quality. Refurbished or not.

I''ve been using the printer as a home printer meaning it was never used hard

and was very happy. It''s a little over a year old now and time to replace, it starts

to print then all the lights in my office dim way down and it dies. The red paper

light flashes but I have plenty of paper, if I reset it sometimes it''ll run but most

of the time it won''t run until it cools down for an hour. Guess I''ll look at other

brands because I don''t trust this unit is made to last.

My Samsung ML 1210 laser printer finally died after 6-7 years of home use (what a great printer it was), so I needed a good replacement. My research steered me to this Brother HL-2040 because of the good reviews and the very reasonable cost of this refurbished unit. Though I was skeptical about a refurb., my concerns were somewhat abated by the other Amazon reviews. I have been using it (or really my kids have been using it) quite a bit over the week we have had it. No concerns at all. In fact, it has performed very well with all tasks to date. I think I might even buy another for my office! As indicated by other reviews, you''ll need your own USB connecting wire but you probably have an extra one anyway I used the old Samsung ML-1210''s. Don''t feel the fear of this refurb. printer go ahead and pull the trigger and buy one.

This is my original 5 star review, see below for sad update:

I''ve had this Samsung 2165W monochrome wireless printer for just a few hours and here''s what I know so far. (I''ll post updates later when I have more experience.)

First of all, the price ($59 plus shipping) was very appealing, and delivery was super fast to my house (in Virginia) from Amazon''s supplier.

There''s not much in the box, and not much to assemble. You just pull off a couple of tape and packing pieces and snap in the exit tray. The toner cartridge is already installed--you just take it out, shake it up, and put it back in. No tabs to pull, etc.

The machine itself weighs almost nothing, and takes up about the space of a shoe box. Once installed, it needs only a power cord to serve all the computers in the house. It sleeps silently, and once awakened to print, it does so quickly, and with no more noise than any other printer. Then it goes back to sleep at once. So it''s a very unobtrusive house guest.

Set up and installation is fairly easy. I am a clever DIY''er, and not afraid to wade into something technical; but I''m no IT tech by a long shot. But if you, like me, are happy to follow instructions and try something else if they don''t work, you''ll have little trouble. Here''s how it went for me. YMMV.

I was expecting to have to connect the printer to my wireless router with an ethernet cable. But the printer doesn''t even have a port for one. (Maybe that''s what wireless means? Like I said, I''m no IT wiz!) I was also expecting it to provide it''s own connection to my network (also a silly assumption, I guess.) Instead, for each computer in the family (we have 4) I had to connect it to the printer with the supplied USB cable, and insert the installation disc in the drive. I have a Cisco Valet wireless router; but it behaved oddly when I asked it to install the printer, so I gave up using the Cisco Connect program at all. The printer didn''t mind a bit. Once connected to a computer (which has already been connected to the home LAN) the Samsung just found the correct network by itself. It did ask me to supply the network security key (whatever that is), but Cisco gave that info up to me easily enough on its third screen. From that point, it was just a matter of pressing all the NEXT buttons until the printer was up and running. At some point it tells you to remove the USB cable, and then the software finishes doing its wireless thing--with an occasional request for you to push the NEXT button, or make some simple and obvious decision. (I denied all requests to let it connect to the internet for registration and automatic updates, and resisted all other inducements to let Samsung spy on me. I''m not paranoid, just ornery!)

The installation software hung up and crashed once on three of the four computers, and always in a different place. But starting from scratch the second time always worked. So, in the end, I''d have call the installation a fairly easy gig.

Print quality is laser excellent, and now that anyone in the family can print from his or her laptop anywhere in the house--for $59 bucks--I''m as happy as a pig in mud.

I''ll let you know how reliable it turns out to be, how many copies you get out of the toner, etc. But right now, it''s looking like a darn good deal to me!

Update and down-rate: This thing has lost contact with all our computers, and no amount of rebooting or reinstalling will get it on-line. It is now only a hardwired printer for one laptop. Down-rating to 2 stars.

This is one awesome little printer. I got it as an upgrade from my old Samsung laser Printer that was not wireless. Now, I thought my old Samy laser printer was compact and small. But this little guy is really the size of a large shoe box. It''s crazy how small these things are getting. The Pages print out smooth and flawlessly in black and white, just like my old one. Doesn''t make a sound until it''s called upon to print. I had no issues with setting up the physical printer machine. That part was completed in 5 minutes flat. The windows installation was a breeze. Just pop in the CD, select the windows setup executable and follow the install steps. I wanted wireless printing, so I had to go through the install steps that required my network name and password key. I was printing my test page from my WIndows laptop in about 10 minutes.

Now for the reason why this review did not get 5 full stars. The installation steps for the Macbook were almost non-existent from the manual included with the printer and they were actually inaccurate from manual that was downloaded from the Samsung site. Furthermore, There seems to be no option to install from the Macbook via Wireless Access point (utilizing the existing home network). Every time, I tried to install the software from CD on my Wife''s Macbook, it never provided me a option to do a wireless access point install like the Windows installation on my Windows laptop. So after reading through the Online manual, which was way better then manual in the box, and reading through some Mac forums where there users describing their experience as a nightmare to setup wifi printing with this very printer model, I was about to give up. But then I tried the following steps below and it worked! Though not via Access point, its an Ad-Hoc direct wireless printing setup, which was fine by me as long as it worked. If I had knew this method which was not described in any of the manuals, it would of take me the same time as the Windows install, but instead, it took me 30 minutes..:) Hope this helps the Mac Users!

How to setup wireless (AD-HOC) Network printing with a MacBook and Samsung ML-2165W Printer.

1. Setup the physical printer machine according to manual. Then connect it your Macbook via USB. Make sure the printer is powered on and verify the Macbook is powered on with wireless network Access.

2. Insert the supplied software CD and double click on the CD from your desktop.

3. Double click and execute to Mac_installer folder >Installer OS X icon.

4. Complete the license agreement and installation steps.

5. This will be a standard install without the wireless option. This is your only option. You will not be given a chance to do the wireless installation like in the Windows version install.

6. Enter in the admin password to install the software.

7. Once the software confirmation screen pops up to confirm your installation was successful, proceed to DISconnect your USB connection to you Samsung Printer.

8. In case you missed it, Disconnect the USB connection between your Samsung printer and Macbook.

9. Navigate to Applications > Utilities >Print Setup Utility (For Mac OS X 10.5 10.7) Navigate to Applications > System preferences > Print & Fax.

10. Click Add on the printer list (For Mac OS X 10.5 10.7, click the PLUS sign) and new display will pop up.

11. On the "Default" Tab of the pop up display, select or highlight the Samsung printer. In the printer name column, it should be listed as "Samsung ML-2160 Series (NNNN)", then in the Kind column, It should be listed as "Bonjour"

Note: DO NOT select the Samsung Printer with the "USB" in the Kind column. This Samsung printer USB option should only be selected if you intend to print from USB.

12. Click ADD, then select continue to create the print queue.

13. Now open up any word document with text and print a test page.

Enjoy!

I bought this printer for $49 shipped from ''newegg'' and I am one very happy camper. Easy set up, easy interface, prints quickly. Very simple.

I have a netbook (no CD drive) so had to download the required driver from Samsung''s website, but this took only a few minutes to download and install.

I am using it with USB cable, not with wireless, and that functions just fine.

You can''t go wrong with this in the $50 to $70 range...

I love this printer. If you''re looking for a no-nonsense, small, easy to use wireless laser printer, this is a very good option. The print quality is very good no smudges, no lines, no defects in the text.

The printer is a little slower than I expected, but tolerable. I printed 20 pages in a few minutes, which wasn''t bad.

Setting up the wireless was pretty straightforward. I''m using Windows 7 and plugged it directly into my computer. I installed the drivers, and it took me through the setup. It connected to my wireless network and voila instant printing from all computers in the house. I''ve heard some people having issues using older versions of Windows, but I have no experience with that.

My main complaint is the cost of the toner refills. As with all printers these days, they''re priced dirt cheap so you can buy expensive ink/toner refills. Sadly, this printer is no exception. The printer costs $60, and the toner refills also cost $60. This is SO annoying, and would definitely make me think twice about buying this printer. The cartridge is labeled to print 1500 pages, so I guess it all depends on how often you print.

Overall, great, no-nonsense printer with unreasonably expensive toner refills.

UPDATE: The original review appears below

I finally got fed up with this Samsung printer and bought the HP 1102w, which is designed similarly to my old HP 1018. I haven''t used the HP yet because I had planned to use up the cartridge on the Samsung before I placed it in storage. Yesterday, I was anxious to print the first sixty pages of my latest project and inserted about three eigths inch of HP paper into the Samsung. That was too much for it to handle, for it chewed up the first page and creased approximately two more sheets. Luckily, there wasn''t a paper jam. However, that annoyance was enough to convince me to activate the HP and hold onto this Samsung for acetate printing or other stuff that could be a little rough on the favored HP.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

I have mixed feelings about the Samsung ML-2165W black & white/monochrome laser printer. I wanted to replace my almost six-year-old HP 1018, which still functioned, but needed serious cleaning that involved dismantling, something I can no longer do because of arthritis. HP has a model that is practically identical to the 1018, but I wanted something smaller and lighter. The Samsung ML-2165W fit the bill at under nine pounds, so I truly like the weight and size. I also like the fact that unlike the HP compact models, the Samsung''s USB jack isn''t recessed into a cavity that is difficult to access with arthritic fingers.

After getting the Samsung out of the box, I discovered that it also has its drawbacks, and I probably would have been better off with an HP compact model, for I have encountered very annoying design problems with the Samsung. Two items on the Samsung were designed backwards.

The first design flaw is with the cartridge. You remove normal laser cartridges by slipping your fingers under a handhold or groove and pulling up, usually at an angle that works well when you''re working against gravity. The Samsung cartridge''s groove is on top and you cannot slip your fingers under anything to pull up at the correct angle. The cartridge is preinstalled, and you''re advised to remove it, shake it, and reinstall it. I grabbed it as best I could, but each time I pulled, the entire printer lifted off the desk and the cartridge didn''t budge. Luckily, I have a set of miniature crowbars, and I used them to dislodge and refit the cartridge at the proper angle.

The second design flaw is the width-graduating lever for the paper tray. That too is backwards, and it wasn''t easy for me to adjust the width to the 8 ½ inch setting, which is as far as it should go, but fails to expand to that full size. To increase the width to the maximum setting, you need to squeeze a clip between your thumb and index finger and glide the clip all the way to the right. The problem is that the release lever is on the right, instead of on the left, where it would make the most sense and would permit you to flush the clip against the printer''s frame to get the full 8 ½" width and hopefully allow for some play. The location of the lever prevents that from happening because your finger will end up pinned between the lever and the printer''s frame. A pair of needle nose pliers may remedy that, but I don''t know where mine are. The end result is that 8 ½" X 11" paper fits so snugly within the tray that it''s hard to accommodate more than a few sheets at a time due to the lack of play.

Other annoying little things: The printer is only about a week old, and I already notice that the top page can end up smudged while it sits on the feed tray under the pick-up roller. That''s an indication that something may not be quite right with the cartridge or other mechanism(s). Secondly, compared to the HP 1018, the Samsung is whiney noisy. I hope I get used to it.

SUMMARY

The attributes: It''s light; it''s small; prints well, but not great because the grayscale isn''t up to par; has easy plug USB and power jacks; it''s also wireless; driver Windows and Mac updates are easy to acquire; it arrived within twenty-four hours and cost me only $87.09 after a $50 instant rebate at Staples. You can''t get an HP for that price, but an HP LaserJet printer functions nicely.

Negatives: Has two annoying "backward" designs, making it difficult to remove/install the cartridge and paper; it doesn''t have a separate feeder tray for envelopes and postcards; grayscale print is disappointing; and it whines.

Kodak 8107120 Premium Picture Paper, Satin, 8.5inx11in, 15 Sheets
  • The satin finish offers a low-gloss surface for smooth color representation and strong details
  • Package includes fifteen 8.5 x 11 one-sided prints
  • Works with any Brand InkJet Printer

I have an Epson 890 printer which I bought for printing digital photos at home. It has a roll attachment and an excellent reputation. I did reviews twice on this printer. It was this printer I used to print with this paper.

EARLIER EXPERIENCES WITH KODAK PAPER WERE NOT GOOD.

I had tried Kodak paper early on with this printer and the results were horrible. So I opted to go with only Epson paper and am quite pleased with the results. However, it needs to be noted, that the Epson printer is optimized for Epson paper and this is not too surprising. Most printer manufacturers make their money on the "consumables" versus the printers themselves, so this is their primary focus. Consumables being ink and paper. Only their paper and ink will give you the best results, if it is up to them.

EPSON PAPER IS NOT ON EVERY SHELF THOUGH: KODAK IS:

However, if you want to buy paper locally, all you find here (in Rochester NY) is Kodak paper and HP at the grocery stores. I felt it was a pity, I could not opt for an easier to buy paper.

KODAK GIVES YOU THE SOFTWARE YOU NEED TO OPTIMIZE ALL THE PRINTERS OUT THERE:

The Kodak paper advertized on the package that it works on all injet printers and mentioned some software I could download to optimize my printer to do this. So I said: Why not give it a shot? I can return it if I''m not satified with the results.

FREE SOFTWARE ON THEIR WEBSITE:

I went to their website and downloaded their software: There were 3 pieces. The Kodak picture transfer software, to use with the latest Kodak cameras and docks, the Kodak picture software for picture manipulation and then the specialized printer optimizing software: "One touch printing software". This one touch printing software is done by printer type, so it is customized for what you need. It actually had a selection for the Epson 890. I would imagine you can pair the Kodak picture software and the printing software with any other camera''s transfer software.

PRINTED BOTH ON EPSON PAPER AND ON KODAK PAPER EXAMPLE OF SAME PRINT (3MP CLOSE UP OF AN AFRICAN VIOLET):

I ran an 8 X 10 picture on first the Epson paper with the Epson drivers and then the same picture minutes later, on the Kodak paper with the One touch printing selection on, in the Kodak picture software. What can I say but Wow! My previous complaint about Kodak paper in my printer was more than resolved. The photo it printed was crisp, clear and had more "true-to-life" colors than the Espon picture did. I really thought the Epson paper was top notch until I saw this.

LONGER LIFE:

One thing I did hear, and this may be advertizing claims only, is that the Kodak paper has a longer shelf life than the Epson paper. I know one of the concerns with ink jet paper in general is a fading problem and a shorter shelf life than conventional photographs. What better than to go to the company that has done this for years with regular pictures.

So now, I have to eat my words from earlier Epson printer reviews. I have added a P.S. to them. You can not only use Epson paper with an Epson printer, but you can use Kodak too and possibly with better results. Try it yourself like I did. Now I can buy some of the the cool options I see out there locally too.

Ordered this to complete a craft project for a Christmas gift. I tried printing the design from two different HP printers I have in my house. The printers feed the paper in a "U" shape, meaning it takes the paper from a horizontal position, feeds it through the unit and prints in a horizontal position. Neither printer was able to handle this paper and would always jam during the feed process. I changed every print setting I could think of, including paper type, quality, etc.

I finally got access to a straight through feed printer, where the paper feeds through the device vertically, straight down. The image came out great and everything printed well. It was a little tricky to iron this to the fabric, but that was finally successful too.

Overall, this is definitely a good product for a craft project. I wasn''t happy that it didn''t work on either printer and the company didn''t provide any remedies when asked, but it all worked out in the end.

I bought this printable fabric to make labels for my sewing projects that I sell. So far, they''ve worked perfectly. I filled a sheet on Word with my logo (copy & paste a million times) and then printed. I used a paper cutter to cut them out straight. Then, I ironed them on to my products and finished them off my sewing around the edges. They look so professional!
