HP Universal Matte Canvas (42 Inches x 50 Feet Roll) Save 26% off

HP Universal Matte Canvas
  • HP® Fine Art Printing Material.
  • Produces prints with bold, dynamic colors.

I really dislike tacky glossy heavy weave photographs printed on canvas, so when I ordered this from HP, I was thrilled to discover that it was much more like a paper then a canvas. It prints easily, and takes a post printing varnish well. Once varnished it is nearly indestructible and great for stretching.

Brother Printer MFC8510DN Monochrome Printer Save 2% off

Brother Printer MFC8510DN Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax
  • Print and copy at up to 38 ppm
  • Automatic duplex (two-sided) printing
  • Built-in Ethernet network interface
  • 300-sheet paper capacity
  • 35-page capacity auto document feeder

I opted for the 8510DN (wired) versus 8710DW (wireless) because, in general wireless-to-wireless performance is often problematic. Specifically, I read elsewhere that wireless-to-wireless print speeds were slow in other devices, so I avoided that altogether. I have the 8510 connected to a 1000MB/s wired network. A wired linux server connects to this network, as do additional *wireless* OSX clients (my wife''s laptop, daughter''s laptop, etc). All computers (linux and OSX) can both print and scan flawlessly. Setup on both operating systems was very straightforward using the drivers on Brother''s website. One thing that surprised me is the speed of the duplex printing. Often, duplex printing can be significantly slower than 1-up printing, but on this printer duplex surprisingly quick. There also seems to be minimal delay when printing from the wireless OSX (10.8) laptops. Print quality is excellent. While the 8510 is larger and louder than the smaller MFC it replaced, when the unit goes to sleep its silent. So far I think this is a spectacular printer.

MFC-8510DN is of the new narrower width profile laser printers from Brother. It widens at the scanning height but occupies less of a footprint compared to my one year old all-in-1 inkjet. For most printing, a black and white printer serves my purpose. Considering the std toner prints ~3000 pgs and the high yield toner prints ~8000 pgs, even though the toners are more expensive compared to an inkjet cartridge, the inkjet cartridges only print ~250 pgs. I had an HP Officejet 8500A (all-in-1 inkjet) and I was constantly replacing cartridges due to the lower page count per cartridge and the tendency for inkjet cartridges to dry out somewhat compared to no issues with the Brother laser toner. I find the font excellent even in micro-fonts. Out of the box, startup for faxing, scanning and printing was mostly no issue, though, initially, after printing and after a time, it entered sleep mode, it would then not wake up when sent a print job. I wound up deleting the driver and then loading a driver that my PC Microsoft Windows 7 auto-selected and that did the trick. No issues since. I still have a small Canon inkjet for printing photos. It is just a printer. But my workhorse is now the Brother All-in-1 laser printer...it''s faster printing after hitting the on switch, faster after already started or even from a sleep mode and it''s print resolution is fine. It scans in color to a higher resolution than many other laser all-in-1s but to a lower resolution than a typical inkjet all-in-1 or a independent scanner. So, for most scanning, even in color, it''s fine. I have not experimented with photos yet but I suspect I will supplement the laser with a separate scanner for those times when I want to scan a photo or a slide.

We bought a couple of these for our manufacturing offices to replace aging printers, scanners, faxes and the PC''s they were all hooked up to. It not only saves a lot of room but these devices are cheap enough that we don''t have too worry too much about the dusty environments they live in. The MFC8510DN really does a great job on almost everything it does.

I do have two complaints though: It doesn''t support scanning to email, but we just have it set up to scan to each user''s ''My Documents'' folder and they can attach their scans to an email from there.

The other complaint is that there is no option to scan to separate pages. Our document management system requires single page tiff files. When we scan multiple pages or documents at once the MFC8510DN creates a single tiff file. I have a program on the doc server that will split these files up but it is an extra step that other machines usually support out of the box.

All-in-all though, I have been happy with these devices and will probably pick up a few more in the future as we start replacing more old scanners, etc.

We needed to replace our all in one so I was determined to get one that was also an Air Printer.

Pros

It does everything great just like you would expect

Con

When you print any document the inside fan continues to run for a good 5-7 minutes and can be annoying if you are sitting in the same room.

I''m a professional with some very high work-flow needs outside of the office; lots of printing and scanning. Very little copying and faxing. I''ve had this machine just over a week and so far I''m very highly impressed. Print speed is terrific and it can handle some nice long print jobs (100 pages or so). The other thing I like is the ability to easily scan to any computer on my network. (I have to switch off my VPN with my workplace, but that is true for every local printer on my network). This ADF works smoothly and when I customize it to scan in black and white or grayscale, it''s very fast. I''ve not used the duplex feature. So anyway, very positive experience so far. I like the high capacity toner cartridge too.

Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex

Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex
  • Prints up to 32ppm monochrome output;
  • Automatic duplex printing for two-sided documents;
  • Up to 1200 x 1200 DPI resolution;
  • 300-Sheet standard paper capacity, expandable;
  • 50-Sheet capacity multi-purpose tray for envelopes

Pros: Fast and easy installation; very speedy printing; print quality very good for text; high capacity toner cartridges available (compatible cartridges are reasonably priced).

Cons: Although Brother added a "straight through paper path" apparently for the purpose of dealing with criticisms of a previous model that envelopes and thicker media were crinkled or somewhat rolled, the straight through paper path does not solve the envelope problem. The crinkling of envelopes occurs because the intake feed roller presses the envelope too tightly, causing the envelope to billow as it passes, and the latter part of the envelope is unavoidably crinkled.

Conclusion: This is a great value for a user who does not need to print uncrinkled envelopes with this printer. This printer remains useful to me because I have another printer that handles envelopes well.

Buy Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex Now

I have had other Brother laser printers, always finding them an excellent buy. The HD-5340D continues this trend with high speed printing, duplexing and excellent black/white graphics capabilities for high volume home or small business use. When these printers are available at special pricing, the ''bang-for-the-buck'' is very high. You might be able to find higher quality printing or faster speeds, but for general production work this printer is a work horse and will be very hard to beat. You will not go wrong with the HD-5340D.

I have about a thousand pages through this machine now and it has done well. If you need a simple black and white printer that automatically printson both sides of the paper it is a great deal. Prints very fast on single sided and reasonably fast still on double sided printing. Sharpness is good and documents look nice. Software interface is simple to use but offers a lot of features. No intrusive software like HP which is a real pleasure. This is the second Brother printer I have in my office and I like them both.

2010 01 05 update: Still going strong! Everytime I look at this printer I am filled with joy for how well it does. Have made it through my first toner cartridge and ordered and OEM and an aftermarket toner cartridge both from amazon. The after market one works great too. I went to amazon to order HP ink today but instead I am ordering my third Brother priner today to replace the HP machine instead of buying more HP ink. I just love everything about the Brother pinters I own.

Want Brother HL-5340D High Speed Laser Printer with Duplex Discount?

First off, at the current price (199), buy the Brother HL-5370DW Laser Printer with Wireless Networking and Duplex instead. It is the same printer at the same price with one added feature: wireless. When I bought my printer, it was on sale for 130. Anyway, this review should apply equally to the HL-5370DW.

Need I say the printer is great? I needed to print 600 pages the first time I used it, and it spit them out like bugs bunny with turrets. The duplex feature saved me a lot of paper!

Second, I don''t think this is mentioned anywhere so I''ll point out that the printer comes with a FULL TN620 toner and drum. This means you will get up to 3,000 pages before even buying your first toner!

Set up was a breeze. You don''t even need to run the included CD. Just connect the printer, Microsoft''s found hardware set up will quickly find the driver for you. run the set up and install!

Troubleshooting Advice #1: As another reviewer noted, however, using 3 hole pre-punched paper caused jam after jam until I figured out how to fix it: tape the paper guider thingees on the top of the printer (the two dangling pieces on top of the printer just above the roller over the output tray sorry for the dearth of technical knowledge). I think its supposed to prevent paper curl, but all it does is cause paper jams! Unfortunately, it cannot be easily removed without breaking it off so I just lifted it up using tape (I just used the blue tape that came with the printer) and presto, no more paper jams! This is a nice alternative to simply not using prepunched paper as the other reviewer suggested. I''d rather leave some tape on my printer than have to manually punch holes in 500 sheets!

Troubleshooting Advice #2: Every time I started my computer 8 pages spit out of the printer with the error message ''USBCBIOS''. If anyone else has this problem, it is because you are using an outdated USB 1.0 printer cable. There is an easy fix: use a USB 2.0 printer cable. By the way, the only CON with this printer is that a USB cable is not included in the box. But like most people, I have a million of these things lying around anyway.

So, overall, saves time and money. Worth every penny!

The Printer documentation was very good; everything was included except the cables. The printer works great except when trying to print multiple pages on pre-punched paper in duplex mode. The first page or 2 worked OK but then the paper would become misaligned for the second side of the page. The fix is to not use pre-punched paper. On regular 20 lb paper it works for 100 pages in duplex mode.

However, we''re happy with our new printer! Norm and Diane

I ordered this item for use in a HP cp1160 inkjet printer. The printer reads an expiration date code from the ink cartridge, and if the cartridge is expired, the printer will not operate. When I installed the remanufactured tricolor cartridge to replace an empty one, the printer did not recognize it as a valid cartridge and did not operate. Replacement with a factory-original tricolor cartridge restored proper operation. Perhaps the idea of remanufactured cartridges is a good one for printers that do not have the expiration date code "feature", but it is not a good idea for the HP cp1160. I do not know if other machines that use the same cartridges would have the same problem. Since the printer is old and ink cartridges are getting hard to get, I will replace it soon, but definitely not with one made by HP! The prices for factory-original HP cartridges are very high, and I feel that the expiration date code "feature" is just a scam to sell more expensive ink cartridges.

Well folks, I don''t know about you but I am stocking up on my favorite films, and FAST. I couldn''t find the HP5+ PRINT film on Ilford''s website, so I''m not sure if they have stopped making it, or maybe it''s just not featured. Either way, it''s a good time to stock up, and film keeps past it''s expiration date.

The Ilford HP5+ is an EXCELLENT all-around film, with fine grain, sharp images, and most of all it responds very well to push-processing. There really isn''t much more you could ask for in a film. It currently is priced very closely to other Ilford films of less quality (Delta comes to mind) so for this price and free Amazon shipping, you better swoop it up quick!

PROS

Sharp images

Beautiful contrast

Easy to develop

Responds well to push-processing

CONS

I bought this film because my photography teacher told me that there was no true black and white like real black and white film. Being the great student I was, I picked up a maxxum film camera, whose lenses are compatible with my Sony camera. Turns out my photography teacher was right! This film has a PERFECT grain to detail ratio. Although developing it is quite expensive ( $20.00 per roll) I still enjoyed the pictures I got back from this film. In fact, if film weren''t so expensive I''d put my DSLR down for good!

I use the HP MATTE Brochure & Flyer paper (8.5"x11") for making all forms of greeting cards, gift cards and note cards on a Canon Pixma ip4700 and Pixma MP600. Color is great, even on the "standard" print selection, and the bright white jumps out at you when you open the card to reveal the verse inside. It''s also easy to write on with ball point pen, to sign the greeting cards. I love this paper! I see reviews that refer to it as not being GLOSSY but this is MATTE paper, not glossy. I''ve used this paper (Q5445A) from the box shown and from the blue and white HP box and both work the same as far as print color and quality. I always have at least 4 boxes on hand and just purchased another 3 boxes from a seller here on Amazon at a great price. If you''re looking to print photos with people in them, this isn''t the paper I''d recommend. But for outdoor or indoor scenes, it''s great. And for making your own greeting cards, I can''t say enough good things about it!

Want HP Q5445A Matte Brochure and Flyer Paper Discount?

I love this paper. It''s got a great thickness and the end result looks fantastic! There was a review about the lack of gloss to this paper giving it only one star, however I believe they may have overlooked the fact that this is a matte paper and not glossy. I love this and will buy again and again!

I love the HP matte brochure paper and use it for a variety of uses. It is almost as thick as card stock and it works great in binder windows, either as a cover or on the spine. This is much easier to get in a binder pocket than regular flimsy paper. I also use it to print out certificates and anything where a little extra heft is important.

The print quality is much better than plain paper and almost as good as photo paper (although not glossy.) If my kids need to print photos for school, or report covers, they use this to get great quality, but a lot cheaper than photo paper. Plus you can print on both sides.

Update #2 Almost nine months after my original review and Epson STILL hasn''t released the ICC profile for their Ultra Premium Luster paper. If you are using anything other than their Ultra Premium line you really aren''t getting your money''s worth on this printer. And as a photographer I can''t give my clients work printed on glossy! Unfortunately, Epson doesn''t seem to even have a timeline for giving their consumers proper ICC profiles. I just cannot understand why they have profiles for every other paper besides their most popular?

Update I am adding a few stars onto my original review for a couple of reasons. One, because Epson customer service is actually one of the better customer service experiences I''ve had to deal with. They are very quick and courteous with their responses. And two, because after a month the banding problem I was having has randomly fixed itself. I''m hoping it was only a problem with the printer being so new, and will not happen again. But I will certainly update my review if this is not the case.

Original Review

Let me start off by saying that if you can get this printer working correctly, it will produce some incredible prints. Epson''s Ultra Premium photo paper, combined with the amazing Claria Hi-Def ink is sure to exceed your expectations on print quality. That is IF your printer decides to work properly.

Out of the box the initial installation (Mac OSX 10.6) was quite easy, and everything worked smoothly. I then tried to connect my printer to wi-fi which is when my problems began. Although I followed the instructions to a T, wi-fi just would not install on my printer, despite the fact that this printer advertises a wi-fi connection in "seconds". A few days, countless hours, and a couple phone calls to Epson did not solve the problem, I was basically told they didn''t know what the issue was. Having to connect my computer and printer with a cable every time I needed to print something was a bit of a pain, but certainly not something that was worth the hassle of returning the product. I then started printing some images to complete client orders I had lined up, and I noticed banding on every single image. I followed all of the steps listed on Epson''s website, as well as took the advice of a printing instructor at my school, taking every step to rectify this problem. Nothing worked. And weeks later my printer is still banding. I have changed the ink and lost a full pack of Epson Ultra Premium Photo Paper, wasting a ridiculous amount of money in the process. Now my printer will no longer even respond to the "clean the print heads" command.

Another big problem with this printer is that Epson has not completed the ICC profiles for some of their own paper, most notably the Ultra Premium Luster. This paper of course being the favorite of photographers. And if you can''t print on Ultra Premium paper there''s not much purpose in purchasing the overpriced Claria inks, as their full potential will not be reached using mediocre paper. I contacted Epson and they said they don''t know when the ICC profile will be available.

Epson''s paper is, in my opinion, the best on the market and as a photographer I hate giving my clients work printed on anything less. But nothing is worth this much hassle. Epson should invest some more time into producing quality printers that are worthy of the paper and ink they use.

*Just a note, this printer does not come with a USB cord, so if you are thinking of purchasing this product and don''t have an extra one laying around, I suggest buying a USB cord along with it since your wi-fi may end up not working. Otherwise, you''ll still need access to one for initial set-up.

Buy Epson Artisan 1430 Wireless Wide-Format Color Inkjet Printer (C11CB53201) Now

I rarely give 5-stars to a printer because there are usually aspects within its usage that are done only satisfactory--trying to functionally get by. The Epson Artisan 1430 is an HD photo printer and it should be reviewed under only that guise.

---Summarical Thought---

This printer gives extremely high quality print-outs on photo paper when using high resolution images. The print time is somewhat lengthy though the outcome is worth the effort. There is a minimalist approach to unboxing and use, for there are very few steps to get the Epson working. It is fairly quick to set-up wirelessly through the included software. There are no negatives that stick out, except maybe subjectively, to claim there are lacking points or better options. If what you want is a way to print high-quality photos the Epson Artisan 1430 is nothing but this.

---Printing Quality---

I used fairly inexpensive Semi-Gloss photo paper that was not a ''premium'' grade nor an Epson brand.

Photo Quality on Photo Paper: 9/10

Settings used: Quality Option: ''Best Photo'' Print Options: All Boxes Unchecked *Under Advanced Tab*: All Boxes Unchecked under Print Options

When printing photos out, I looked for resolutions at least 1 megapixel or more--at least 1024x786--and blew the pictures up to make a 4*8.5x11 poster. The latter was done using Picasa by Google and something I strongly suggest doing if you get this printer. That is one of the fun things that you can do with a printer that accurately replicates photos/pictures/paintings on paper--you can do a lot of interesting decorations/projects. My idea was to find some of my favorite paintings online and print them out to use around the house--which this printer did exceptionally well at. It is for this fact that I can really give you a good idea on the print quality of this printer. The lower the resolution of course the less clear and precise the photos/pictures were when enlarged.

Comparing to the original picture on my laptop screen, the pictures printed out where actually better quality with better contrast and colors. I do know my LED screen is not too good, but the pictures were extremely vibrant and saturated correctly. Printing paintings from Monet to Van Gogh as well actual pictures, the accuracy was outstanding.

Printing black and white text on plain paper, the Artisan did not have the sharp angles and abyss black that a laser printer would have though the text was fairly decent with a slightly washed out black and compact angles around the letters.

B/W Quality: 7/10

---Ink...& Usage---

**Important**

The Epson Artisan 1430 takes Epson cartridge 79 which is high-capacity. After going to the store and seeing Epson 78 next to the 79 with the label: ''Standard Capacity'' and 30% less in the cost, I thought that this would be an option for someone wanting to print just a few more photos. Even the employee thought the 78 would fit in the Artisan. This is not the case. The cartridges look identical except for 1 strip of plastic that blocks the ability to slide it in the cartridge holder all the way. Well, I decided to ''snip'' the extra plastic boundary and it proceeded to fit perfectly. When going to prime the ink, however, I found that the printer would not recognize the ink. Not sure why Epson did not want the 78 to be used in the printer, but it will not in anyway take anything other than Epson 79.

The cartridges are around 22$ a piece and the Epson needs 6: Black, Yellow, Light Magenta, Light Cyan, Dark Magenta, and Dark Cyan. When printing many colored photos the most used where the Light Magenta and Light Cyan. I printed around 40 or so ''highest'' quality full size (8.5x11) print-outs before the L. Magenta and L. Cyan ran out. Yellow was on its way. If you plan to use this for many photos, go ahead and buy some replacement L.Magenta and L.Cyan cartridges. If you are planning on printing 5"x7" or smaller photos, this ink will last a very very long time. If I had to guess at the latter I would say you would at least get 120 printouts before running empty.

---Print Time---

The print time was fairly slow and this is due to me selecting the highest possible quality and deselecting the ''fast print'' option (don''t know if that helps quality or not). It took about 7-8 minutes to finish printing a full size photo.

---Operation---

Very simple to use. The wireless setup is the most complicated but this is lessened due to the software included with the Artisan. You have the choice of using the included CD to install software on your computer--and setup the wireless connection--or you can download it from Epson''s website. Some printers have you follow a manual to setup the wireless connection, but the Epson, through the software, is automated. You have the option to connect via an AccessPoint (which is sometimes difficult to find), or you can input a wireless key. I did find it difficult to setup multiple connections because after you first connect to your router, I could not find how to add another connection without installing and re-installing the software.

The printer is very very quiet, equal to a loud whisper and is stable when on a table. It is wide, somewhat heavy (25 lbs or 11kg), and takes up a lot of space (25" or 63cm wide).

This printer will not be just something in your house that prints things but can really encourage a hobby in creating posters, decorating the house, and forming photo albums/collages. Be warned that with the high quality photos might also come an addiction to inundate your place of living with many pictures. The reasonable price makes this a very good value.

I''ve already read two OTHER reviews of this printer that had the exact same problem out of the box: namely, the paper jam signal is blinking (indicating a paper jam duh) and will not clear no matter what you do. The EPSON support was timely (I had to wait 5 minutes on a weeknight for tech support) and some of the best I''ve had. In the end, they determined the bogus paper jam light was unsolveable and they had to send me a replacement. I received it by FEDEX 2 days later. They also let me keep the original printer''s ink cartridges and sent me 6 new ones, so I was able to do some "free" testing as to ink capacity (see below). With the replacement printer I had ZERO problems with easy setup; no horizontal striping on the prints; all colors solid and vibrant.

Pros:

* Excellent tech support and hand holding.

* Stunning pro quality prints on Epson High-Gloss Paper

* Beautiful prints on Epson Matte Presentation Paper

* Problem free push one button setup with WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

* Included copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 (Win/Mac)

* Some of the best, friendliest, and fastest support I''ve ever received

Cons:

* Obvious bad initial batch of DOA printers WHICH MUST BE FIXED

* Power cord has tendency to come out of printer

* Sparse documentation in box (newbies beware)

Things to note:

* Big footprint (which is necessary for a big format printer)

* If you don''t have WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) capable router, wireless setup may be a problem

* USB printer cable is NOT included but would be useful

* Specialized ink and paper is more expensive than usual home printing supplies (don''t be surprised)

* Paper feed support for 13 x 19 inch is a bit short for thin matte paper which "flops over"

I set this up with WPS before I installed any software, which was not in the included documentation. My experience told me to set up with WPS before installing drivers as the printer is just registering with the router. Just push the WPS button on your router (if it has one) and then push the button on your printer within 2 minutes. When I subsequently installed the included software and commenced setup, it asked me if I knew where my printer was and finding it on the network was trivial. Nowhere does it say to do WPS first, and I suspect some people will have setup problems if they don''t do WPS first (or don''t have a WPS router). I had no need of a USB cable for setup.

Also, though the wireless connectivity is nice, you may have issues with it later as I did. It''s likely that the printer was too far away from my router and the connection may have dropped (yes, my fault). So, out of 25 wirelessly printed posters, 2 stopped printing in the middle and I wasted a couple of premium photo sheets. (NOTE ADDED: Large files printed in high quality on glossy paper cause most problems. Same photo printed on matte paper is no problem. Wi-fi bandwidth or packet issue? Maybe.Problem does NOT occur with USB connection.) USB cable connection was rock solid. I highly recommend getting the inexpensive matte paper while you setup and learn to use the printer. Alternatively, just do setup and testing with regular 8.5 x 11 inch inkjet paper.

When replacing my printer, Epson let me keep the original six cartridges and sent me six new ones as well (like I said, nice support!) so I experimented with quantity. I was able to print thirty 13 x 19 prints before two of the cartridges ran out: light cyan and light magenta. The other cartridges are at varying levels, with black being about one quarter full. It''s difficult to say what mileage you will get since it depends upon what you print I did black and white prints, color photographs, and movie posters (Wikimedia Commons has a great high def Boris Karloff "The Mummy" with some complex coloring). Each of the six ink cartridges will be individually replaced, not all at once. You might want to invest in a second set, and then replace each individually as they run out. Light cyan and light magenta are the colors most likely to need replacement the most often. Black if you do a lot of bitonal printing (large text posters).

I printed on one sheet of non-Epson glossy photo paper and 2 hours later the ink was smudging. When Epson recommends that you use their own paper, take that to heart. The Epson papers are dry and solid right out of the printer.

Based on my experience so far, I have a rule of thumb that a single 13 x 19 inch photo quality print on premium paper will cost about $3 to $5. That might be higher than reality, but it still gives me a good feel for single print expenses.

I love this printer and would have probably given 5 out of 5 stars had it worked initially. The hand writing is on the wall that there''s something awry with some of these early shipments, but Epson responded like a champ and replaced it quickly.

Lots of friends and family are going to get gifts this year of beautiful 13 x 19 inch prints of houses, babies, and cats. Cheers!

Want Epson Artisan 1430 Wireless Wide-Format Color Inkjet Printer (C11CB53201) Discount?

I bought this printer for a few reasons, and will rate each point separately:

1. Wide format: I do a lot of 13x19 and 11x17 printing. A wide format printer was a necessity for me. There are about a dozen or so wide format printers on the market (or is it large format, with wide format being 24" or wider? I forgot). Epson has always made a good wide format printer. This is now my 3rd model over 11 years.

2. Price: The price is always important to me. This cost me under $300 and for a wide format printer with these specs, an excellent value.

3. Separate color ink cartridges: I print a lot of blue and black in my work, so it''s important to be able to replace these colors frequently without having to replace the entire color cartridge. This will save me money.

4. Print quality: I need a printer that is going to give me exceptional print quality. The highest print quality setting gives me what I am looking for. The colors are stunning.

5. Paper: I love Epson''s premium luster line of papers. They are gorgeous. I always buy Epson''s brand of papers and have a stock of various sizes.

Things not important to me: speed wireless printing. I would have connected the printer to my print server (which is also wireless). The built-in wireless saved me the hassle (and my print server is a hassle when I add a new printer to it). The speed is fine, and I didn''t notice any slow-down when printing wirelessly versus via USB.

I am not saying that speed and wireless printing are not important, they are just not important for me. I am of the mind that you can''t have it all, and that in high-end graphic arts printing, you almost always sacrifice speed for quality.

If I were able to remove a half star it would be for not including a small assortment of paper samples. It was always a nice surprise to open that in any new printer, almost like the toy in Cracker Jacks. Don''t be cheap Epson!!!

I highly recommend this printer, and with it, Epson premium luster papers. You won''t be disappointed.

Brand new printer out of box, put the ink cartridges that came with it in and then it powered itself off. When I turned it back on I get a flashing power light, flashing paper light and solid ink light. Epson was very pleasant to talk to, they had no idea what was wrong and are sending me a new one. Hopefully the next one is better.

Update: Received replacement printer in 2 days later. Works great. Print quality is excellent and it''s fast. I''m going to change my rating on this too.

HP 57 Tri-Color Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging
  • Color ink cartridge for HP Photosmart 100 digital photo printer
  • 3-color ink for printing high-quality color graphics and documents
  • Creates sharp, high-color images on plain and special paper
  • Outstanding photo-quality at up to 2400 x 1200 dpi
  • Yields 391 color prints base on 15% coverage

I just purchased the HP photosmart 100 printer which prints out 4" by 6" size prints. The printer takes the HP #57 cartridge and the photo quality results are great. You would even say that they match the quality of a professional lab. I have already printed well over 50 prints and have not needed to change the cartridge. The colors and skin tones are right on and the glossy HP PHOTO PAPER makes all the differance. Also two of my friends, after seeing my photos, have also bought the HP photosamart printer. Another great feature feature of the printer is you do not need a pc to support it, it directlly accepts smart media, compact flash and sony memory stick. I know this sounds like a review for the printer but lets not forget without the HP #57 color cartrige you have no photos.

I just bought a new HP PSC 1210 All-in-one, and printed 4x6 photos on the free sample premium plus glossy photo paper, after installing the HP 57 tri color cartridge. The result? Astonishing!! There''s no way anyone can tell that the photograph is a computer printout and not developed on kodak paper.

True, developing 4x6 can be as low as a quarter per print at some places, making this scheme uneconomical, but I''d highly recommend this for printing larger photos. (5x7, 8x10).

My order came from ''The Witz and Sons'', fulfilled by Amazon.

I''ve bought HP ink through Amazon for years and never once had an issue. This time what I received was questionable.

The product is advertised as being in retail packaging, and the photo shows an HP package.

However, when I opened the Amazon box, what was inside was not in an HP retail box. Instead the ink cartridge arrived "unboxed." There was no HP cardboard box. It arrived in only the HP inner foil package. That means there was NO HP box, NO UPC and, of course, NO explicit expiration date listed.

The only thing on the package, outside of the HP logo, is a foil code. In my case the foil code is SG2 110800 100218 1133. I happen to be familiar with the codes on HP foil, so reading the two sets of six numbers in yymmdd format, I was able to see that what I was sent had an "ink warranty" that expired about 9 months ago back in August 2011 (110800), and was produced in February of 2010 (100218).

While many people use ink past the warranty date, that should be the choice of the consumer. Here, it seems likely the seller removed the box to try to pass off a "old" product as fresh, which is deceitful, at best.

I use this cartridge in an HP DeskJet 5150 printer. The printer always yields crisp, well defined color prints. Unlike some people I think that the cartridge lasts a reasonable amount of time, although I don''t print photos very often, which can definitely use ink at a voracious pace.

My biggest criticism of HP cartridges in general is the price, but the price here at Amazon is the best I have found, and I think the Amazon price point, particularly combined with free shipping and no tax makes this cartridge reasonably priced. Having said all that, there is one area where the product could be improved, which is the pronounced tendency of the ink to smear when wet. I realize that this is a not-unusual trait of inkjet printers, but I am more acutely aware of the problem with this printer and ink combination than with most other inkjet printers I have used.

Overall the HP 57 is a good value for the money, particularly if you shop around for good deals.

I have the HP PhotoSmart 100 and with this ink cartridge I get fantastic photo prints that look like Professional Lab Photos. I am very very pleased with this product.

UPDATE: If I could change my original 3-star rating to 1 star, I would! There is no need to put up with such frustration after all, even at the low-tier price range!

It''s one year later, and I finally gave up putting up with this piece of junk, and replaced it with a Canon Pixma MP150 (which was about $20 less than I paid for this HP). With the HP, I got "jams" reported after EVERY page printed. The "fix" I''d thought I''d found (in my original review) stopped working. No good especially since I usually have to print things in duplicate--and I have more things to print now (still not lots but enough to get sick of this nonsense)! Even worse, it said it even though there was no real jam. But I''d have to reset it after every sheet. Intolerable! And, sometimes it''d come up as having an error when I first turned it on and hadn''t even tried to print anything yet that day. Argh argh argh!

Cheap does *not* have to mean shoddy, and the HP is just plain shoddy. The Canon I just installed breezed through a multiple-sheet print test with no problems. Installation was a breeze, too. The only thing that says "cheap" about the Canon, other than the price, is it''s a little less than solid sounding, but IT WORKS RIGHT, unlike the HP. I just wish I''d picked a Canon to begin with.

-Original Review-

Before I get into specifics, I''ll say that the belief that cheap all-in-one devices are mediocre at everything, seems to be correct! But, for the great [ie, CHEAP!] price of this machine, it''s good enough. I rarely need to print, copy or scan, so buying individual devices or even spending much for an all-in-one just wasn''t justified in my case.

The machine''s working fine now, but HP doesn''t really seem to have its act together. First off, it was supposed to come with an installation CD. There wasn''t any. Even whoever wrote the instructions didn''t seem to be sure on whether it comes with one one picture of the accessories shows CDs, but the picture of how they''re packed shows NO CD! So I guess the packing team got confused.

Then, when I went to HP''s site to download the software (rather than wait for them to send out a disk), it says that the download doesn''t have all the software on "the CD." But, the download actually *did* have all that was claimed to be on the disk.

So finally I got to turn it on and set it up. It set up easily enough. But, I quickly found annoyance. Most importantly, every time I tried to print more than one page it would report that the cartridges had "stalled," stop printing, and dump the rest of the print job. I discerned that this was due to it holding onto the first page "so the ink could dry," which would be cool but when it did that, its own jam-detection software was thinking that the page the one it, itself was holding onto was a paper jam!

Also it would print a new alignment page every time I turned it on. What a waste...certainly HP doesn''t think people will leave their printers on 24/7??

I figured that these irritations had to be due to poor coding of the driver software, rather than mechanical errors. YEP! Sure enough, the next day HP''s auto-update detected a couple of available patches. Usually it''s necessary to download a patch for things like this when the original came off a CD, but it seems that actually fixing the one live on the site isn''t the HP Way! That has to be patched too, rather than them doing it themselves for the live downloads and putting out a single fully-functional version!

Immediately after installing the patch, I tested printing a 2-page document. No more "stalling!" Whee! Now it counts as a functional printer!

Unfortunately, it STILL starts printing an "alignment page" every time I turn it on. That''s an utterly ridiculous, ink and paper-wasting behavior and I''ll be looking to find out how to stop it. For now I''ll turn it on with my other hand hovering over the "cancel" button, but I''m hoping that there is some way to turn that idiocy off.

As for the other functions: I haven''t tried the copier function yet. But, I have used the scanner for some photos. These photos are in a catalog. It makes a grainy scan. Fortunately, I have Photoshop, so I am able to clean up the images well. Their own image-editing software is a basic-type program. Photoshop works very well and allows a lot more things to be done.

Strangely, it will auto-set to a resolution of 200 dpi and then complain when it''s turned up. And, it wants to put "sharpening" on everything (ever see those lines in a .jpg? That''s where they come from!) So I ditched that, which also caused an "alert" box. I found out how to stop these irritating "alerts" from appearing (If I didn''t want more res and no sharpening, I wouldn''t have clicked for it, would I have!!?)

While that did improve things, I still had to "blur" out the dots and lines in Photoshop. THEN I shrank the picture (dimensions and filesize) back down, and it looks almost as good as the catalog''s original. But if I had let the scanner put it in as a small picture to begin with, it would have been lousy. Better to make it do a BIG picture and shrink it back yourself after retouching it.

I am presuming that the scanner will do better with text documents that don''t have much detail to begin with.

A couple of other things about this machine are that it''s loud, and does a whole lot of moving the print carriage for no apparent reason on startup. When using the scanner, the parts related to that start moving, apparently for nothing, when the lid is opened, then about 10 minutes after I''m done scanning they''ll move some more. And it all sounds clunky to me. I''m not too confident in how long this machine''ll last.

When we bought this printer we noticed that it had a really low price, so we thought it might not work all that well. We hooked it up (it took about 1/2 of an hour) and it worked really well, for about a month. Then it started taking 3 and 4 peices of paper every time we printed 1 page. Solution: we would put alot of paper in it and hold down every page except 1. Then, it was stuck with about 20 documents in queue that wouldn''t cancel. Solution: Go to www.hp.com/support and type in hp psc 1311. It then tells you how to cancel the documents. After all of this, the print cartrige stalled. Im on hp.com/support trying to figure out whats wrong with it as we speak. Overall, this printer is for people that can figure out how to fix it.

"...a little loud."

"...had to download patches..."

Come on people, this baby costs 80 bucks, and many people seem to be upset that it doesn''t have a bread buttering control or that it works poorly when you weigh down the paper feeder with a 20-pound river rock to stop multiple page feeds. I could go on about how things were "back in the day", but suffiice it to say that we''ve forgotten how good things are.

I''ve owned many different printers, and many HP printers from the top of the line to the bargain basement. I have always come away feeling that HP consistently provided the most value for the dollar and this printer is no exception. I''ve used it to print (a lot), scanned and edited both text and photos, and copied a number of documents. In every case the unit did everything they said it would, and I continue to watch it work while thinking "only 80 bucks, only 80 bucks...

Unfortunately I must have received the Boring Model, as I have had none of the crazy adventures related in other reviews. Oh well.

Remember: It''s only 80 bucks, It''s only 80 bucks, It''s only 80 bucks, It''s only...........

After months of paper jams and stalled print cartridges, my printer doesn''t respond at all anymore when I send it documents to print. What a waste of money. Buy a Lexmark.

Brother Black Compact Inkjet All-in-One with Fax and Wireless Networking (MFCJ265W)

Brother Black Compact Inkjet All-in-One with Fax and Wireless Networking
  • Easy to setup wireless (802.11b/g) networking
  • Built-In Fax - No PC required to send and receive documents
  • 1.9 Inch color LCD display for viewing images and easy menu navigation
  • Fast mode printing speeds up to 33ppm black / 27ppm color
  • Direct photo printing on demand from your media cardst

In case you got down to the reviews and didn''t realize what you''re looking at: the Brother MCFJ265W is color ink-jet, multifunction machine. It prints, scans, and faxes. It''s wireless. It''s an inkjet. It''s pretty cheap.

I assumed at first, that this was one of those scam printers which lure you in with price, but don''t work very well and charge a wad for replacement ink. Not so! Within the realm of cheap inkjet printers, the output is plenty adequate. You can print photos in a pinch, but it''s perfect for printing out maps, web pages, and other notes where color adds to the information. And the OEM replacement ink is reasonably priced, and available on Amazon.

I use a Mac, and as far as I was concerned, set up was easy. There are several modes of wireless, as well as a USB cable connection. (Cable is not included.) There''s an included CD with software, but I went to Brother''s website and downloaded the latest version. Installing just the printer driver got me printer function, without any additional cruft. I had to install the TWAIN package to get scanner function, which put a little icon in the menu bar. (A *color* icon, actually, ruining the default-black OS X menubar look. Ahem.) And it locked up my menu bar at one point, freezing the clock and nearly making me late for an appointment. But other than that, I''ve had no problems. I no longer have it auto-load on login, and quit when I''m done with it, and that''s been fine.

Scanning was near miraculously easy. I pressed the scan button. The scanner operated. A file appeared in my "Pictures" directory. That''s it. The scan was gorgeous, too.

The printer prints reasonably fast. It''s quiet. It doesn''t vibrate or have any weird smells or do anything objectionable. Since it''s inkjet, it doesn''t take gobs of power to start up as a laser printer -no flickering lights. The print quality is fine, but it''s not as precise and high-contrast as a laser printer. If your business presence involves looking good on paper, you probably want to spend a bit more on your printer than this. For everyday household printing, though, this is easy, fast, cheap, and totally readable. There is no real output paper "tray" -printed sheets just poke out the front, waiting to be taken. If you''re printing more than a couple pages, there''s a little tongue that can be extended to catch them, but I wouldn''t let a whole lot of pages build up there. (Which you probably can''t since the input paper tray isn''t all that large either.)

There''s a very nice color LCD screen on the front, which makes setup easy. It even shows you a little animation of how to install the ink cartridges. The cartridges are easily loaded on the front side, behind a hinged door. Each of the three colors and the black are all separately replaceable. The starter ink claims to be "approximately 65%" of a full-sized cartridge, so the printer comes with about 290 pages worth of ink.

Overall, as a household printer for everyday personal printing, I think this is a great choice.

EDIT: I needed to use this printer, and because one of the color ink cartridges was too low, the printer refused to perform a black and white copy or otherwise function whatsoever. I bought black ink, replaced that cartridge (noticing then that the old cartridge of black ink was full) and the printer still refused to perform a black and white copy because of the color ink level.

I feel pretty clever because I figured out a rudimentary hack to override this ink check.

Remove the ink cartridge and you will see a clear window on the top. The cartridge also compresses, exposing a clear vial with lines across it in the back of the cartridge. I took a black sharpie and colored both windows (doing one or the other alone didn''t work) and the printer then allowed me to use it for faxing, scanning, copying, and black and white copies. I still intend to buy color ink, but sometimes I don''t have time for that when I need this device to function. I know Brother''s competition generally has the same practice (comment below if you know of an example that does not), but this is really too much for me to accept.

I still stand behind the rest of my review, but I cannot call this a five star quality product. It''s changed, in my estimation, from an excellent printer to just OK.

-------------------

Old review follows:

Apologies in advance for a lengthy review. For some reason, I really like thinking about printers.

I noticed that the printer''s ink doesn''t automatically show up on Amazon''s ink finder yet. Ink cost is an important characteristic for any ink jet printer (in my opinion, by far the most important).

It''s $10-$15 to replace the black ink cartridge Brother LC61BK Ink Cartridge (Black). Off brand cartridges are available and inexpensive. 12 Pack. Compatible Brother LC-61 Cartridges. Includes Sophia Global Brand Cartridges for 3ea LC-61 of each Color Black Cyan Magenta Yellow. How many pages do you get? Believe it or not, but I printed about 300-350 pages per cartridge (3 cartridges total so far) before they started to gray in output and I switched back to my beloved Samsung Samsung ML-2525W Wireless Mono Laser Printer (the laser gets thousands of pages per toner cartridge, but then it''s an entirely different category of product).

I print an enormous amount of material, so it was easy to see how this printer performs economically. It''s easily the most affordable per page inkjet I''ve ever used. A laser printer is cheaper, faster, and I like the quality, so bear that in mind if you''re just planning to print black and white documents in large numbers. In fact, a limited paper tray makes printing more than 100 pages at once with this printer quite a hassle (most people see no issue here, I bet). I should mention that if you want your ink to last, use fast printing. I think the results were easy to read.

Of course, this printer does a lot more than my b/w laser. I printed a couple of photos, and they were color accurate and looked pretty good (not excellent). Loading images from my Sony camera''s memory stick was simple (you can load from USB or SD card). Frankly, I think it''s very silly to print photos at home when the quality and price per picture is much better at a store nearby (my grocer''s website makes it easy). However, the results are reasonably good at home. Color prints at high quality take an enormous amount of time. It felt like at least a minute per page, but I didn''t time it. The black and white printing seems slow as well unless you use the fast mode, and even then, is slow when compared to a laser printer.

I''ve always been highly annoyed with ''printer cleaning'' that wastes a ton of ink. This printer does not waste much ink when performing this function.

I sent a fax to my wife (who was very surprised as she didn''t know we had a fax machine!). This sucker really is a great fax machine. It was very snappy with the scanning. If you''re running a business and worry about employees not being familiar with the fax machine, this is a very, very good one (it''s so simple to use).

And onto the scanning. I consider the quality of this scanner to be outstanding! It''s the strongest aspect of this all-in-one. Colors were accurate. Everything is sharp.

Of course, all of these features (except the fax) are tied together with its wi-fi interaction. And this is where I initially ran into problems. The CD''s included software failed to complete installation, repeatedly (I use Windows 7). I find this unacceptable, but it''s my only major gripe. I downloaded a newer version from Brother''s website and that installed. You can log into your network from the printer''s screen and keypad, either putting it in a mode where the software sets it up for you, or punching in your router login. The process is easy for people familiar with their network''s equipment, but I think the process could confuse a few people. The printer''s reception is acceptable, but it''s not as strong as some of my other devices. One of the benefits of 802.11 N is increased range, but this printer is 802.11 B/G. Most people will simply keep this near their router and never experience a problem.

For scanning or faxing, I think this is good enough for any user. It isn''t a professional photo printer and it''s not as effective for high volume printing as a laser printer, but it''s certainly not bad. And in all functions, I found it easy to use. Before you consider a different brand, please consider the cost to refill the ink cartridges. I always review Vine products (or anything else) with the price in mind, and I believe this is a strong value for around $100.

I calculated it out, and it was actually cheaper to buy this NEW PRINTER than buy overpriced ink cartridges for my noisy ancient HP printer. (I still can''t get over that!)

Pros:

1. Cost: great for price, especially considering it''s functionality

2. Scanner: pretty good quality considering, but again, I''m used to my fossil of a printer... obviously wouldn''t be the best for applications requiring intense scanning capabilities, but for everyday use, awesome

3. WIRELESS: Sorry, but this concept to me is still astounding. "you mean, I can have my printer on the other side of the house and still print things from it?!" Much better than keeping the printer within two feet of the computer, and it reduces the number of unmanageable tangled cords by at least one [no usb connection needed] (two [power cord] if you located the printer away from the computer)

4. Fax, though I don''t use it (or have a main line for that matter) is a nice additional feature. Maybe once they (maybe they already have) figure out a way to attach cell phones or go over the internet, this will be more useful for me. Still, good feature for others needing this, as fax is still a pretty common form of communication and document sharing.

5. Separate color ink cartridges: FINALLY! I hate having my HP color cartridge run out of ONE color and then having to figure out how to use it still; there''s still two colors of ink in there... but they''re pretty useless for full color images (and you better hope you don''t forget which one of the three it is). Now they''re all separate and easy to get to (front flap folds down) and change.

6. Cheap off-brand ink cartridges: Unlike other companies (cough cough) there seems to be an abundance of off brand ink cartridges for Brother printers... which is good! Saves you a LOT of money, as long as you''re willing to put up with a dud every once in a while (for the money... about $1 per cartridge... it''s totally worth it). Additionally, the pages per cartridge for this printer is much higher than HP''s 21 and 22 cartridgesmaking the price per cartridge even more enticing.

7. LCD screen: it''s in color! I didn''t realize when I boughtnice surprise.

Cons:

1. hidden paper tray: I was initially very excited about this feature... so tired of papers sticking out of the printer and getting bent, folded, dusty, dirty, etc. However, it doesn''t hold as many sheets as I would have hoped and it gets jammed a lot. I''ve used the printer for three days now, and of all three times, it got jammed twice. Hey, maybe it''s just user error, but I re-read the directions, just to make sure I wasn''t being an idiot.

2. Wireless: Wait, yes, I did have this listed as a pro above, but I at least HAVE to mention that obviously if your internet/router/service goes down, you literally can''t print unless you manually haul the thing back over to your computer and dig out a usb cord. I know, not the end of the world, but still, a bit frustrating.

3. EVERY time it gets manually connected to a wireless network, it prints out this sheet saying so... completely stupid and not very sustainable.. plus it just wasted some of your ink and a page of paper. Can you stop this? I''m sure. However, it''s still frustrating... especially for a sheet of paper you''re just going to throw out anyways(or cut up and recycle as notes!).

4. Footprint: I was hoping it would be a bit smaller (I realize the dimensions are listed). It''s still massive on my bookshelf.

5. Noise: I was hoping for a decently quiet machine... while this is quieter than my last printer, it''s still pretty loud.

Overall: Good product for the priceThe pros outweigh the cons, and seriously, some of those cons aren''t even much of an issue. For someone who''s just looking for something that prints and not necessarily too concerned about professional prints and a little noise (aka. students, home office?, etc.), this is a good deal. Again, especially for the price. Compared to others in it''s $$ range, this probably has the most bang for the buck (gadget wise and cheap ink.. if nothing else)

Want Brother Black Compact Inkjet All-in-One with Fax and Wireless Networking (MFCJ265W) Discount?

I didn''t use the fax feature on this "All-in-one" printer, so I am going to count that out.

Setup: The printer supports connectivity with upto 2 computers. Connection to my desktop computer, which is connected to the modem using a wired connection (but is also capable of wi-fi functionality) was fairly painless. I used wireless networking to achieve this. But I had a really hard time connecting it to my laptop (on which I use wireless connection to connect to the internet), which is pretty ironic. For some reason, my laptop couldn''t recognize the printer even if we were on the same network. I had to resort to a wired connection instead. And no... cables weren''t included, so I had to go through my cabinet to find a matching one.

Print: The print quality is mediocre even on the "best" setting. Even my oldest printer, the Dell 125 all-in-one printer prints better than this. You can notice some significant "grains" on the picture. The contrast, the sharpness, it really doesn''t match up. The printing speed isn''t all that great either. The way the paper tray is built "in" isn''t quite user-friendly too.

Scan: Scans work as it is intended to. Sure, they are not the best scans but I doubt you will notice much difference.

Interface: The interface is quite user-friendly. Even my 10 year old cousin had no problem browsing through. If you are also looking to register your machine, you can find the serial no. under "Machine info."

I, however, ran into what I thought was some hardware problems. Most of the time, when the machine goes into sleep mode, the display screen would still have lights on. And if you wanted to re-activate the machine, touching any button would give you the three beeps of error. Only way to restore control was to soft-reset the machine by plugging the power cord off.

Few hiccups aside, the machine is still a fine all-in-one printer. But if I had a $100 to spend on a printer, I would spend it on a different one.

**********EDIT***********

Sorry for the late update everyone, but six months into owning this printer, it has died on me. I only ever use it casually to print about a couple of papers every week or so. Google "Brother Printer Three Beeps." It''s a pretty common problem with this brand. The customer service will suggest you to look for any "stuck" keys, but since there are none, all you can do is send it in for repairs.

It''s basically what Dustin (see http://www.amazon.com/review/R2ZHFZ58MXHQ6F/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R2ZHFZ58MXHQ6F) experienced, but his suggested method never worked on my printer.

I recently purchased a Brother MFC-J265W printer to replace my MFC-210C that stopped printing in black after four years of great service. The J265W was an outstanding value on Amazon. I have a small home office for my artwork business and this MFC does everything I ask of it quietly and efficiently. Some of the comments I read about this printer said that it did fair color printing of photos. I have printed photos and several artworks using quality photo paper and the results are superb. It scans photos and artwork better than many professional scanners. The ability to make quick easy in-house copies is also a big plus. I have not used the fax or the card reader function as yet.

A marvelous feature of Brother MFC is the inexpensive ink cartridges, the name brand cartridges are cheaper that HP, Canon, Lexmark, and others. Amazon has great non-OEM Brother cartridges at veru low prices that work flawlessly with this printer.

I highly recommend this very quiet and dependable little workhorse fax, copier, scanner, printer.
