Brother MFC-8840DN Network Multifunction Laser Printer

Brother MFC-8840DN Network Multifunction Laser Printer
  • Multifunction office machine, prints, copies, scans, and faxes
  • Up to 21 ppm printing and copying; up to 2,400 x 600 dpi print resolution
  • 33.6 Kbps fax modem, 300 speed dial locations, up to 600-page memory
  • Includes 50-sheet ADF; 32 MB memory, expandable to 160 MB
  • Parallel, USB, and Ethernet interfaces; PC and Mac compatible

After doing a lot of research for multi-function printers I selected this printer and love it! I wanted a laser since it''s cheaper to maintain (no $$$ ink cartridges) and didn''t really need color (since I have a very nice photo printer for the rare times I want to print in color). I love the duplex mode (double side printing) to save paper and it''ll automatically print ''n'' pages to one physical page which is also handy. I have it networked between my computer and my husband''s so we both can use it. (DSL connection with separate Linksys router and DSL modem.)

All wasn''t 100% rosey at first.... I connected it via my network and it worked great but due to a problem using it while connected via VPN to my employer, I decided to use the USB connection (when I was on VPN I couldn''t see the printer). I got all features working fine except for the scanning (it wouldn''t scan at all). After reading so many bad reviews of Brother''s tech support I was leary to call them but after many reinstalls w/o luck, I finally called them. The support folks were GREAT!! I ended up calling twice; one for help uninstalling the network drivers and again for a scanning problem. The second call I was on the phone for almost an hour and they found a patch (from Scansoft) to my original VPN problem as well as a registry patch (from Microsoft) for the USB scanning problem. The fix for the uninstall problem was because I had to log in as Administrator not just be in the admin group (I''m running Win2k) so that''s why I couldn''t completely switch from network connection to USB (the network drivers were still partially installed). In both calls, the tech support folks were helpful, pleasant, and knowledgeable.

The only remaining problem is configuring the fax with an answering machine. The manual has a lot of info but their explanation of the features for the fax isn''t all that clear. Right now I don''t need the fax much so I''ll wait a bit and call tech support back again later.

I love this printer, I like that it has all the features I need in one nicely packaged unit, and for a change, I have good things to say about a company''s tech support. (Every company says customers are number one, but only a tiny % actually mean it.)

Other reviewers have complained about the included scanning software (Paperport 8.0 SE from Scansoft) but so far so good, it works ok for me. I haven''t tried the OCR feature though but supposedly it''ll let me scan pure-text documents for later edits (like in Word) as well as let me search for docments by providing words inside of the document (not just file name which isn''t too useful).

I ended up purchasing this printer at PCuniverse (free shipping and no sales tax) for the same price listed here. The reviews of the MFC 8840 printers in Amazon were a great help in selecting which printer to purchase.

i bought this unit hoping it would replace my separate fax machine, printer & copier. for the most part i''m very impressed. the print quality is very good the fax machine is excellent and because it''s a flatbed scanner, it''s very easy to use it a photocopier as well. i''m have a mostly mac network and the printeing is fine from both os 9.2 and os 10.3 as well as win xp. the install software is a little barbaric in that it doesn''t really let you know what it''s installing or give you the option to install just some of the components, the software install directions were all but worthless, but anyone with some mac experience will figure it out. the installer worked ok and left a text file log of where it put things. one nice thing is that you don''t have to use the brother printing extension (driver). it works fine with the standard apple laserwriter extention. however the brother drivers might be a little faster and they had some more printer options. also, under os x, it does support rendezvous for printing which makes network setup a snap!

my major gripes are that it doesn''t support network scanning via ethernet for the mac ( i think it does on pc). you have to run a separate usb cable. annoying, my biggest gripe is that the scanning twain driver is really lame. i couldn''t get it to work under os 9. it does work in os x, but it doesn''t have a descreen option. even though the scan quality is excellent, you will be stuck with a moire pattern on anything that is halftone like books, magazines and newspapers! unacceptable. if brother put a little more software effort into the mac side of things they would have a killer product for that market. but as it stands now, you have to run a separate cable for scanning and buy something like the extensis descreen (intelliscan $99) photoshop plugin to fix the moire problem. i''m under the impression that the pc software is more developed, but i haven;''t tested it for anything except network printing which works fine.

I would give this device 6 stars if I could!! The Brother 8840-DN scans documents to PDFs at a rate comparable to the much more expensive Xerox Documate at nearly half the price. Plus you get a lightning fast copying machine, a fast fax, a network printer and a flatbed scanner. What an amazing product!!! I did a good deal of research prior to purchasing this machine, and almost cancelled the order based on some last minute that I read. (Luckily I changed my mind.) PC world said it scanned documents rediculously slowly, taking 33 seconds to at 100 dpi. This turned out to be absolutely NOT true!!! I managed to get through a stack of fifty documents at 300dpi in less than 120 seconds, and that includes creating the pdfs. (I am running an AMD64 3000+ with 1 GB of ram). The print quality is about average for a laser printerit is nothing compared to the ultra-crisp text of the Minolta Color laser Engine (I also own a Minolta Magicolor 2350EN Color laser) but for less than half the price, I have no complaints. The network connectability is an added bonus. I can scan and even fax from my computer (without printing a hardcopy first) -all remotely. If you purchase this item, make sure to upgrade to the max 160 Mb of RAM (128 Mb DIMM available from crucial for 50 bucks) as this speeds things up even more.

I would recommend the Brother 8840DN to anyone looking for a well built and designed MFC device, and would take all the unjustified negative comments with a grain of salt.

Enjoy --

Pro:

Fast copies and printing

Good image quality (though perhaps not quite up to standalone copy machine quality)

Good scanning ability

Con:

Paper tends to curl after going through impression

Unwieldy manual feed handler (awkward to change between letter size and envelope)

On 30th day, began printing black splotches at regular intervals--apparently from a drum in the process; I hadn''t handled the drum, so this was apparently caused by the machine itself

Gets confused when multiple functions run concurrently

Annoying buzzers (e.g. when you open paper tray to put paper in)

High toner consumption

I am quite impressed with the MFC-8840DN.

It''s loaded with useful features, and they all work.

The product is solidly designed, and there was obviously a lot of thought put into the mechanical design and control panel. The printed user manual is very good too.

The multipurpose tray is quite handy for keeping a few mailing envelopes or CD labels ready for printing at a moment''s notice.

The duplexer has no problem doing two-sided printing, and there are options for straight through paper feeding and output.

The document feeder works well, and the software also handles using the flatbed scanner conveniently. If you don''t use the document feeder, it prompts you for each page to be scanned on the flatbed.

I''m not using the fax at the moment, but that too has a multitude of useful features. If you do a lot of faxing, or have special fax applications this is worth looking at. You can do everything from fax relaying, broadcasting, and storing, to emailing faxes automatically to wherever you happen to be.

The network and software setup is in a separate manual, and may be a little intimidating, but everything works as advertised once you get it set up. If you want to use the scan buttons on the control panel, you will need to open some ports in the Windows Firewall. You can only register one computer to use the control panel scan buttons. The PC software scanning does work from multiple computers. You can buy a license if you need to have multiple computers appear in the control panel''s scan button menu.

I ran into one annoying problem, but it isn''t a big one.

There''s a web browser interface that you can use to change the configuration. It sometimes freezes, and at that point I had to power cycle it to be able to use the web browser to configure it again. I don''t expect to be changing the configuration a lot, and the problem happens infrequently.

This product supports an amazing number of network protocols, which makes it very useful for networks with a mixture of Apple, Windows, Unix, and other computers. About the only protocol it doesn''t support is NETBIOS over IPX/SPX. That''s a pretty unusual combination, but I did happen to be using it. I changed my configuration to NETBIOS over TCP/IP, and that is supported. NETWARE is supported with IPX/SPX protocol.

You can connect this to a 15 amp circuit, but don''t be surprised if it dims the lights when you turn the power on. It''s probably better to connect this to a 20 amp or 30 amp circuit. I had to relocate the printer because it was causing my UPS to detect a line voltage drop. That''s really a problem with the UPS being too sensitive, but it''s something to keep in mind if you have everything connected to the same circuit.

Canon BJC-55 Color Bubble Jet Printer

Canon BJC-55 Color Bubble Jet Printer
  • 720 by 360 dpi print resolution
  • Desk-top quality printing in a compact model
  • Built-in USB and Fast IrDA
  • Prints black text at 5.5 pages per minute, color text at 2 pages per minute
  • Convenient wireless printing from compatible computers or hand-held organizers

On the go, I frequently need to print out documents, be it invoices, reciepts, e-mails, etc etc so I decided to purchase this product. Words cannot describe my feelings toward it, I use it soo much with the laptops I don''t know how I lived without one before. Installation on Windows 2k, and ME was flawless, both using the Fast IrDA.

The printer is just the perfect size to slide in to my briefcase, and adds little weight. It''s battery operation is really what caught my eye, it says you can print about 100 pages with a full charge, but I think its a bit less than that. However, the battery takes little time to charge.

I was not aware it would come with as much ink as it did, came with 2 color cartidges, 1 black (small), and 1 black (large), as well as two trays that they are held in. The Fast IrDA is such a fabulous thing, wireless printing all the way. I decided to purchase a USB cable, its much easier some times using the cable then the IrDA (Infared) port. The quality of the documents is fantastic, matching (and beating!) my desktop printers at home. The speed is good, considering this is a portable printer. The only real drawback is that it is a single sheet feed printer, unless you buy the paper loader, which I will surely do! This is THE BEST portable printer I''ve found on the market, it is well worth the money.

This is a small update, I''ve been using the printer for about 5 months now, and everything has gone smoothly. I purchased the auto-sheet feeder from Canon (directly, from their web site) and it performs just like a normal desktop printer would! I''m still loving it.

I needed a printer to go with my Notebook and this one filled the bill. It isn''t cheap but you seem to get what you pay for. When at home, adding the Auto Sheet Feeder makes it as convenient as a stationary printer but with a smaller footprint. Highly recommend this one for the Notebook users.

I watched this printer for years and I was waiting for the price to drop. I finally caved in a bought a refurb 1 year ago.

Pro: Lightweight 2Lbs(with battery), USB, battery powered, comes with AC adapter, size is small to fit in a back pack. Works with my Tablet PC software.

Con: High quality mode is slow compared to today''s printers as well as resolution. Old type of feeding one page at a time. Could not get the IR to work. I suspect that my computer IR is not compatible. I just carry a very small USB cable.

I have looked at the current portable printers and they are all 5-6LBS. Yes they probably have great quality and photos but I don''t need that. My purpose for this printer is to do quick print outs of 2 to 3 page reports, drafts and boarding passes. It fits so well in a computer bag with my slate and some paper.

The company that can produce a better quality printer with this size and weight will make money. That is probably why this printer has not dropped much in price even used. It''s the year 2006 and it sells higher than the current canon and hp used.

I JUST BOUGHT THIS PRINTER FOR MY LAPTOP.

IT WAS VERY EASY TO INSTALL AND EASY TO WORK WITH. THE PRINTING IS GREAT, AND QUICK FOR A BUBBLE JET. THE COLOR IS VERY GOOD.

I was very pleased with the product. There probably should be some warning from the manufacturer that this is large format printing. Staples couldn''t print this for me, but fortunately Kinkos could. Prints came out a little off/shifted following the template, but that could have been operator error.

Overall a good buy and would recommend to others.

I was in a pinch and running out of time to print raffle tickets and 2 of us, looking at the image on the screen, still managed to miss the fact that these are JUMBO tickets and when they got to me neither of us had a printer that could use them and even our friends at Kinko''s/FedEx couldn''t use them to print our tickets.

I guess it was an expensive lesson. Look REAL close before you buy!

HP PHOTOSMART C4150 ALL-IN-ONE

HP PHOTOSMART C4150 ALL-IN-ONEThe print quality is nice, it prints at a good speed and doesn''t have a long calibration time like my Canon Pixma had. I can get by on it for my graphics work. Overall a decent inkjet, especially if you just need it for printing documents and things like that. The scanner can be finnicky though, it doesn''t always scan properly, and I wind up with a horribly scanned piece of the item on the scanner bed. A quick reboot of the printer solves it, though.

This thing was a disaster! It printed all of two pages before malfunctioning. First, it pulled two sheets of paper through, then it pulled about 10 sheets through, and now it keeps giving a message that the printer cartridge cradle can''t move because of a paper jam or obstruction. The HP technician walked me through all the trouble-shooting steps before declaring it a hardware problem and offering me a new one at no cost (but he wanted my credit card number as security until I shipped the defective one back). Uh, no. This thing is going back, back, back and I do NOT want another one. This was supposed to replace my problematic Epson... MMMph. At least the Epson lasted for a few months before it broke. I just bought this one two days ago.

I bought this printer 14 months ago and used it very little, less than 100 pages printed. Last week I got a "paper jam" message but there was no jam. When I turned the printer on and off it would feed the paper but then it would jam. I took it into Best Buy for repairs. The Geek Squad guy said they were getting a lot of these printers back for the false paper jam message. He said they would have to send it in for repairs, estimated cost of $60-$100. He indicated most people just trashed the printer then and bought new rather than throw good money bad. DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER.

Bought this printer in April. Probably printed 20 pages on it in 3 months since I have another printer hooked up. When it worked it printed great pictures. Ink cartridges ran run out too quickly though. In July it died. Got a "paper jam" error without any paper in it. Contacted HP service, which is overseas in Asia now. Mostly the rep read off what you can find on their web page. Most of the time I couldn''t understand him anyway. It wasted 1 hr until they agreed to send a remanufactured one to replace the broken printer. 10 days later, the replacement showed up. All was well until the next morning. The color cartridge has some kind of leaked and I needed to run the clean cycle a few time to get it to print in color every time the printer sat for more than 12 hrs. With how little ink is in the HP 95, this was a problem. So I called them again this time I spoke to a supervisor. They sent another remanufactured printer. 10 days later is showed up. And guess what, it doesn''t work. The second replacement will not power up. This was after the supervisor said he would make sure QA double checked the printer before it went out.... Currently I''m working with a case manager (one step higher than a supervisor), who is not very helpfully. It''s been three days and still no solution. I originally bought a C4150, and they sent a c4180. Seems like there are a lot of broken 4180s. If they send back a 4150, I''ll return it and get my money back and buy a Canon. Its too bad, my old HP printer is 7 yrs old and working great. I wanted an all in one to clear up some space..

HP D5460 Photosmart Printer

HP D5460 Photosmart Printer
  • 9600DPI 64MB USB PRINTER

I purchased the Photosmart D5460 as a replacement for my five year-old DeskJet 5650, mainly for CD/DVD printing capability. Here are my notes:

Setup/Installation:

Large footprint at 18" wide x 15" deep, plus 6" more required in the rear when using the CD/DVD tray.

Basic driver from HP''s web site has all necessary functionality, just without pop-up ink level displays. I use Nero Cover Designer for CD/DVD labels, so I didn''t bother with the bundled software and its limited functionality.

Driver has "Printing Shortcuts" to create presets for different paper and quality combinations. Nice concept, but see below about the ink volume setting.

Ink usage:

Performs very frequent and lengthy "preparation" routines that consume ink. If the printer has been idle for a while, it goes through a 95 second routine before printing. The printer then runs another 30 second routine after finishing the printout.

Default driver settings use too much ink enough to bleed through my paper.

"Printing Shortcuts" feature doesn''t save the ink volume setting. I created a few shortcuts with reduced ink volume, but any time I selected them, the driver returned the ink volume slider back to the default.

Print quality:

Good results in Normal and Best modes as good as my old printer, but no major improvement.

Below average results in Draft mode worse than my old printer. Vertical lines on the page are very jagged.

Inks are not water-resistant at all. Any moisture will cause colors to lift off the page and smear/run. Black is better but still problematic. You must use HP Advanced Photo Paper for water resistance, but obviously that isn''t reasonable or practical for non-photo use. Epson and Canon use water-resistant inks, why not HP?

One final thought:

The print head (part# CB326-30001) is removable, but it is NOT available for purchase from HP or any retailer. The only way to obtain it is via HP Warranty Repair. In other words, when the print head clogs or wears out after warranty, the printer is going in the trash because HP doesn''t sell the print head separately. So much for HP being "green".

Buy HP D5460 Photosmart Printer Now

This Photosmart Printer is the best. It makes pictures so good you won''t believe they came from an inkjet printer! It also prints in color on CDs/DVDs a real plus. Another plus is the replaceable printhead. Instead of trowing away the printer, you can replace the head if it becomes clogged.

The only complaint is the the ink gauge it doesn''t work. The software said I was out of colored ink but I am still printing! I have printed 20 photos and some labels and still going strong. There seems to be no way to tell the actual ink levels even a reasonable close estimate!

Read Best Reviews of HP D5460 Photosmart Printer Here

Based on manufacturers'' specifications, this printer has incredibly low per-page printing costs, provided you use the 564XL ink cartridges. They''re hard to find, but well worth it.

The print quality looks great for photos, text, or printing on CD, but then again I''ve only had this printer for a month. Every printer generates great output when it''s new. The second black ink cartridge theoretically produces crisper text, and indeed the text output is crisp, but again: it''s a new printer. Ask me again in a year or two.

I bought this to replace an Epson Stylus R300 for printing directly on disks. Since this printer was designed after that California class action lawsuit, hopefully it won''t start screaming for cartridge replacement when there''s still 25% left.

Unlike the Epson Rxxx series, this printer comes with a slot for storing the disk printing tray, which is a great feature. My old Epson printing tray got warped from bad storage over time.

There''s a separate paper tray for your 3x5 photo paper, so you don''t have to remove your 8.5x11 paper any time you want to print a photo.

The LCD panel is backlit, so you can see error messages even in a poorly lit room.

Printing seems to be faster than on my old Epson, but I didn''t exactly time it to be sure.

The print to disk software that comes with this printer is -like most HP applications and drivers -bloated and useless. HP must be hiring programmers from Creative Labs or something. It may actually be useful for novice users, but the rest of us aren''t happy about being forced to use a small number of templates with no ability to customize the layout. While the printer itself is great, I would suggest looking for a 3rd party application for designing and printing disk labels. The free utility that comes with both the OEM and retail versions of Nero works quite nicely. In terms of disk printing software, the Epson Rxxx series beats this printer hands down.

The web printing software was cumbersome, didn''t do much, and only works in Internet Explorer.

As with most HP products, install the drivers only.

Want HP D5460 Photosmart Printer Discount?

Replaced a 4 year old Epson R300 Printer with The HP D5460.

First, if you ever used an Epson Printer for printing CD or DVD are you ever going to be disappointed with the HP. You don''t have the flex ability in sizing. With max setting I get a hairline area that the printer won''t print on up the right side of the disc. Email HP tech support over 2 months ago and there problem solving was worthless. Just very little adjustments. Epson Software you could do just about everything to include move it all around for alignment.

Second, HP Home Essential Software just sucks. I don''t know how else to describe it. Very limited software for editing just about everything. You have to use a different program to edit a cd/DVD picture the way you want it then go to HP software to print. You can not even scan cd/DVD''s into the HP CD/DVD print software.

Print quality is good if you use high quality printing but you will use ink.

I have used this printer for 2 months before writing a review and I am glad I did. Try to print off size envelopes. A breeze with Epson, not HP. I am going to sell this printer as soon as my new epson arrives. I will never buy HP printer again!

I bought this printer because it was highly rated in Consumers Report. Big mistake. The print quality is great, but you will have to take out a 2nd mortgage on your house to pay for the ink. It goes through ink cartridges ridiculouly fast I loaded all new cartridges and printed a Xmas letter with pictures it was out of ink before 20 pages were printed. I think of HP as an ink company that sells their printers for cost just to get you to buy their over-priced ink (kind of like your local heroin dealer). If you buy this model, you will be sorry. I also have a model D 7160 and it is much better.

I bought this colored paper to separate my weeks of work in my course. The sheets hold the color well; there was no bleeding over of the color on to my white pages. The color is stark enough to show the sections easily. This is better for me than the bulk of too many tabbed pages in one section, which can fill a binder before I''m ready to shelve it! I also used a few pages to freshen the background of a poster board I was reusing for a presentation. Very good quality stock!

  • Maximum 5760-by-1440 color dpi
  • One-touch color and black/white copying
  • Streamlined 18.1 x 18.9 x 0.6 inch design

I bought this printer from Amazon for under 100 dollars, no tax, no shipping. Here''s what I got: an excellent photo quality printer, copier, scanner, pdf creator and fax machine with auto-feeder. I am baffled by the people who post one or two stars about this machine. Go to any store and you can hardly buy any printer, any copier, any scanner, any fax machine, or any pdf creator software for 100 bucks, and this unit has them all built into one nice looking box. There is also a very capable OCR application.

I am very tired of hearing how much ink costs. A printer should not be measured by the price of ink but strictly by how much it costs to print each page, and Epson tends to be at the low end of the spectrum. I also don''t care how much ink is left in the tank or if it has a chip, again the issue is how much a page will cost me. I do not work for or represent Epson, and hope to point out the negatives as well as the positives. I own 3 Epson printers and 4 HP printers. I don''t own Canon or Brother because at the lower end of the spectrum I think their products are very cheesy. Let''s talk about the CX9400Fax. I doubt if a better value exists anywhere near the price range. My experience is that individual tanks are the better choice but I''m not sure it really makes a huge difference.

Don''t even think of rating a printer by how "fast" it is, with inkjets that spec is a ridiculous fantasy ... there is just no such thing as 32 pages a minute in real life! I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised how much faster this unit was than just one generation ago. In photo mode I would estimate real-life printing to be four times faster than the CX7400 and at least as good, if not better. Epson has always excelled is photo quality and the CX9400Fax is no exception. As a fax machine it is adequate for home office use and the small number of faxes people send from home. Same with it being a copier and scanner, for the price it does a good job. It seems built a little sturdier than most competitive models. It sounds, well, like a printer. I don''t know how anyone could expect a mechanical device to be totally silent. Ease of use is pretty close to flawless.

Here''s a couple of "secrets" that address concerns some of the other reviewers had. First, if you think the printer is running out of ink too often and you swear you don''t print that much, you are probably right. Epson, like some other manufacturers, has to prime the heads every time you turn the printer on, which uses ink. That costs money and I wish there was a better way. But, simple solution, leave the printer on 24/7. There is no logical reason to turn it off between each use , especially if you are using it as a fax machine, since it automatically goes in to a sleep mode. Another well documented Epson feature is that you can force it to print using only black ink. There are a lot of reviewers who say they ran out of all colors when they think they only printed in black and white. While they may be right, it''s hard to blame Epson. The manufacturer clearly has a "black" only setting in the print options, plus they offer a high-capacity black tank for those who do a lot of text printing.

It is important to note that if you want to fax from a document that is on your computer you need to have the CX9400Fax connected to a phone line, just like any fax machine. It won''t magically send a fax through your internet connection. There are ways you can do that but not with a traditional fax machine.

So, what is the image quality? In "draft" mode it is marginal but that''s what draft mode means. Draft mode is not intended for quality printing, just to quickly print a document that you intend to throw out.

As you increase the quality settings, the Epson magic sets in. Normal mode is as good as any printer on the shelf. Photo mode is almost as good as it gets. The highest quality modes are marginally better, you have to have a fine eye to tell the difference, but the real story is that it is very hard to beat an Epson photo when printed at the best modes with the highest grade papers. Moral? If you print in draft mode and expect high quality you are seriously fooling yourself.

The final observation is that many people complain that a set of ink tanks cost as much as the printer or that printer manufacturers don''t include an USB cable. Those complaints just can''t be taken seriously. Can you remember paying over $500 for an inkjet printer only 10 years ago and how badly it printed? We have demanded that our consumer electronics be made by cheap labor in China, which has brought hardware prices down to a cost almost equal to the cost of materials. 100 bucks for a machine that does as much as the CX9400Fax is ridiculously low! Sure, it may be a throwaway, but that''s what people want. The USB cable issue is even funnier. How many USB cables does the average person own? The percentage of people buying a printer who have never bought a printer before is near zero. And if you seriously don''t have a USB cable you can find one for a buck-and-a-half right here at Amazon. And complaints about ink costs? They have stayed the same for many years. When you buy a car you need to fill it with gas, when you buy a printer you need to fill it with ink. It''s what you choose to do. Gas prices have risen a lot more than inkjet prices.

My final somewhat negative comment about this printer as well as most competitive brands, is that they just try to do too much. Yes, I want a printer/scanner/fax/copier but the media card slots and LCD screens are overkill. Fine if you want them but I believe most people know how they can do the same thing and more directly from their computer.

MORE: read this carefully

After a few weeks of owning this printer, using it daily to print normal business documents, the ink level had hardly moved. Then one day the repair people were here to check the air conditioner and turned the power off for a few minutes. Ok, it wasn''t a surprise to me because I know that printers need to "charge" when powered up, but when the power came back on a full 20% of the ink was used to prime the printer when if turned it back on. I have to repeat what I said in my review, NEVER turn this machine off, it uses almost zero power when in standby and I guarantee that if you turn it off every day you will use a ton of ink needlessly like so many reviewers report. After the power off incident, I am back to printing lots of normal documents each day and the ink indicator hasn''t even moved. Verdict? It''s not the printer''s fault that some people go through a lot of ink, it''s because they didn''t read the instructions.

The document feeder is so important and it works well, if a little slow. Faxing on the previous model I owned meant lifting the lid each time you wanted to add a page to a multiple page fax, and that was brutally slow. Now it has a 30 page ADF which turns the corner on home office products at this price point. the new color screen is great and the fax quality is unmatched. Epson really anoys me with their multiple ink cartridges but that is the only thing that keeps me from giving it five stars.

I needed a printer to replace my HP 2210, which lost its fax capability, and was considering the HP c6180 before I read some of the reviews here. The price is great, but I also considered the potential cost of ink (which is why I couldn''t consider the Canon mp830). You can buy compatible ink cartridges from Amazon for 5.99.

It doesn''t come with a USB cable, but you can buy one one anywhere for 6.99 or less.

Setup is a breeze compared to HP, and the sofware that comes with it doesn''t claim squatter''s rights to your hard drive. I couldn''t get it to recognize the black ink cartridge and had to call Epson''s support, which I connected to on the first try. After a few failed troubleshooting attempts, they gave me a reference number for a replacement cartridge -I called them on Friday evening, and it arrived the following Wednesday.

After installing the good cartridge, it completed its setup in a few minutes. I have had the opportunity to test everything except the OCR software. Printout is good, just select "black only" when printing text to avoid using too much color ink. Copying and ADF worked without a hitch. The fax also works fine, but I''m have a time getting it to pick up over my answering machine (my old HP had the same problem).

The only thing I can say that isn''t positive is that it has a pass-through paper feed system -I personally prefer paper trays, but it works fine.

Epson would have accomplished what Lexmark tried to do if they had included a wireless network card, since everything else works great.

This printer is well worth the money. Unless you need built-in wireless or double-sided printing, you can''t beat the value.

will not fax, scan or print at all if any of the 4 cartridges need replacement.

magenta ink cartridge low? sorry, you cannot send a faxeven though sending a fax requires no ink.

same with scanning or printing black and white.

sort of like if your car wouldn''t start if your wipers needed replacement

DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER! I may not know much about all the other new printers, multi-purpose or otherwise, that are out on the market but I know when I, as a consumer, am being huckstered and taken advantage of, and that is what the Epson company is doing.

I have been using computers and printers in my business since 1981 so I know a little about what to expect and how I should be treated by a vendor. I used to swear by Epson printers when they were dot matrix, ribbon affairs and even after. But today they have a new corporate culture. I will never, never, buy another Epson product because of this CX9400 which I made the mistake of buying. Here is why:

I am not your average "pie in the sky" reviewer. The question is NOT whether this printer works when its working, it is about the disrespect and contempt which the Epson company has for you and me as their customers.

I don''t know about you, but I do not need a printer company or computer company to use my computer as an advertising mechanism to hawk their overpriced wares. In this case, their outrageously expensive ink.

I read that others are having the same problem with this ink guzzling monster and most of the reviews pan the printer. Go to and see for yourself. Out of 145 reviews 48% panned the printer while only 39% liked it. Well, I''m panning both the printer and the company.

The trouble is, the computer TELLS you that it is out of ink even when you KNOW that it is not. They have built it into the electronics of their ink cartridges (as if ink cartridges need electronics to communicate with the computer). They are not satisfied with the customer finding out that they have run out of ink and need to replace the ink cartridge, no, they MUST tell you and then stop, I said STOP, the printer from functioning until you obey. This is insulting. It would not be so bad if you didn''t absolutely KNOW that the cartridge wasn''t empty and if they sold their ink at a reasonable price.

First, you should know that printer ink, especially Epson printer ink, is argueably the most expensive consumer liquid in the world. You can buy a barrel of oil for less than it costs to buy the 3 cartridges the CX9400 needs. LITERALLY, a barrel of oil. There is nothing short of rare chemicals more expensive for the faction of an ounce that you are buying. But to extort you into buying their ink by shutting down the machine which you bought and paid for and they now are using as their agent in your office to force you to buy ink, it is an abuse and disrespect for the customer. It shows a corporate contempt for their customers.

There are programs out there intended to defeat this overbearing feature but, as yet, Epson has been able to prevent them from being useful on the CX9400. Thus the CX9400 is still one of Epson''s cash cows in your office ready to hawk their overpriced product using your printer and your computer. Remember, whenever the cartridge says so, you MUST buy new cartridges because the printer simply will no longer work until you do and their is nothing you can do about it.

Furthermore, since buying the printer 6 months ago I have already had to have it replaced once because the scanner failed.

So if you are one of those "Have a nice day" types who have been reviewing here and who don''t mind being abused walked on by a vendor to whom you have paid your good money, then buy their products. Knock yourselves out. Otherwise avoid Epson, avoid its products, the CX9400, and their corporate mentality like the plague.

HP Deskjet 3054A e-All-in-One (J611j)

HP Deskjet 3054A e-All-in-One
  • disc is not included

How does a 5-star product like a Mac computer represent and sell this horribly made HP printer in their stores? After less than 6 months of use, out of nowhere it started sounding like a broken car, and after 45 minutes with tech support, they said they could fix it through their computer system for $30 (without us even shipping it). What a rip off!

HP makes all their money from ink, not printers! So if they aren''t willing to fix the printer over a computer connection for free if you''ve owned the printer for less than a year, I recommend anyone who has had troubles with their HP printer to CHANGE THE BRAND OF PRINTER YOU BUY!!!

Come on HP, less than 6 months of owning your printer, and you lost a customer buying ink from you for life.

worst printer everrrr. got it as a promotional deal with the purchase of an apple desktop and I honestly don''t even know why Apple would partner up with HP after this little stint. It took me 15 minutes to print two pieces of paper because the printer kept jamming, even though there was no jam. omg i seriously need a drink after this, however, since it is still quite early, i will instead run it over with my car.

This printer makes the Ford Pinto look like a hand crafted Swiss watch. There is not one redeeming quality about it except its use as a boat anchor. Nothing works. Wireless printing, forget about it. Wired printing, nope, not on your life. Scanning, are you serious? Email printing? Did you eat a lot of paint chips as a kid? No. Nothing and I mean nothing works. I am convinced HP paid Apple more than full retail to dispose of these idiotic waste of carbon printers. Salvation Army has posters up with a picture of this printer that says " Do Not Accept!". That should tell you something. Run, don''t walk away from this heap of junk.

The printer doesn''t work well at all. This product would not hold the paper in the slots. The plastic was broke around the paper holder. I would not recommend this printer to anyone. Also the plastic was all broke up in the shipping of the product. So with the broken parts and not working well I would NOT recommend it to anyone.

I bought the 3050A for a year''s use. it is not robustly built, but it hasn''t broken down or malfunctioned through it''s first two reams.

The wireless was set up effortlessly and upgrading the driver for OS 10.7 was effortless. When it was installed on my MAC Pro I didn''t suffer from the annoying add-on programmes that HP used to stow away on their installation disks. Print quality suits my requirements for business use and passable photos.

If i wanted a top end printer I would expect to pay 5 to 10 times what I paid for the 3050A. Horses for courses 5 stars.

If you''re tired of beige or gray cheap-looking plastic printers, you''ll love this shiny new offering from Samsung.

Very low profile and paper comes out the front so you can stack items on top of it during use.

Samsung doesn''t offer a higher capacity toner cartridge but you can get one from checksnet that prints more pages and can be used for making checks.

Excellent print quality & quietest printer I''ve ever owned.

This is my second Samsung (my previous model was a 1200 series which lasted 8 years and was eventually donated to our local school)

The ML-1630 is just stunning for a monochrome laser printer under $200. The look is unique, but as the title says, the quality is what you would expect from a home laser printer.

The characters are crisp and the graphics are perfect (2 settings, standard and above). It is very quiet, plug-and-play, can be shared without any issue on a local windows network. You get one year warranty which can be extended by another 3 months once you register your product online.

The only issue we got was with the paper. We were using recycled paper (which is quite thin) and sometimes the paper would be a little wrinkled. By switching to normal paper (Stapples), the problem went away.

I bought this printer as a supplement to my HP OfficeJet 5610 All-in-One. The Samsung ML-1630 laser is a very quiet monochrome laser printer. Print quality is excellent for text. Also the price per page for text is very reasonable. Printer is very quiet and prints text pages quickly.

Only mediocre for printing graphic images (such as coins) that are colored. The change to gray-scale comes out a little dark.

Pros: Very small foot-print, very good looking printer, low cost per page.

Cons: Color graphics come out dark when converted to gray-scale.

I bought this printer as a replacement for a 5 year old Brother printer. Although I had read reviews saying it did not work well wirelessly, I decided to give it a try based on otherwise good reviews.

At first all went well. As a printer it is excellent. Great print quality, and quiet.

However, it does not work well with Airport ever since I upgraded my OS to 10.5. It will do one print job, then freeze. I have to reset Airport for each and every print job. This is a real pain when I am working wirelessly, which is most of the time.

It still works fine if plugged directly into my MacBook Pro via USB.

Wireless is a futile effort. I''ve read numerous blogs on the problem, and solutions are temporary at best.

If you plan to use this printer plugged directly into your computer, then it is a good buy. If you plan to use wireless with a PC, I have heard that works but can''t confirm. But don''t buy if you plan to use wirelessly with a Mac.

One other minor inconvenience: the paper tray is rather small, and holds about 50 sheets. If you print lots of large jobs, I''d consider another printer.

I was looking for a laser printer for most of my documents, which don''t need any color printing. I was also looking for something that looked halfway decent on my desk, and I found it with the Samsung ML-1630.

It''s a quick 5-minute setup, with the only thing you really have to do to the printer is slip in the printer cartridge. Then you turn it on, connect it to your computer, and install the software from the CD.

I installed it on a Vista laptop, everything worked great, then shared that printer on my home network. I wirelessly connected to that shared printer from a remote Windows7 laptop, and it installed the printer drivers and printed easily. I was actually quite surprised it all worked, to be honest.

The printer is quiet and prints documents perfectly. As other commenters mention, it doesn''t hold a ream of paper, but for my home office, it''s more than I print in a week. It looks fantastic, too.

The only thing missing is built-in wireless, but I''ll make do.

I like Brother printer and did not want to get any problem because of 3rd party toner. The price is ways better than buying it in local store that they have only regular toner, not high capacity one.

Can''t believe I''m writing this -the whole idea of using official toner cartridges from the printer manufacturer makes me gag -it just seems like a giant scam. ("Be sure to use only Honda-brand windshield washer fluid in your new Honda.")

But the fact is that I''ve tried lots of 3rd-party toner cartridges from well-recommended companies, and now I use only official Brother brand cartridges. The 3rd party cartridges seem to inevitably leak toner and make a mess. When I''m on deadline I just don''t have the time for that sort of nonsense. Worth it to pay more for the official Brother cartridge, and Amazon usually has a good price.
