Canon PIXMA iP5000 Photo Printer

Canon PIXMA iP5000 Photo Printer
  • Up to 600 x 600 dpi black resolution, 9,600 x 2400 dpi color
  • Up to 25 ppm black, 17 ppm color speed; borderless 4-by-6-inch photos in just 36 seconds
  • Directly supports PictBridge-compatible digital cameras and DV camcorders
  • ContrastPLUS ink system for realistic tones and economical replacement
  • USB interface, Direct Print Port; PC and Mac compatible

Photos printed on photo paper would be hard to distinguish between those that came from a lab. Text quality is better than the older s and i series printers, but not quite laser quality on plain paper.

Works best with Canon''s photo paper, but have had pretty good results with other glossy paper like, sepom (not as glossy but waterproof!) and red river paper.

Buy Canon PIXMA iP5000 Photo Printer Now

With all of the specifications to compare (e.g. pages per minute, dots per inch, number of different color cartridges), it is easy to forget cost of ownership. A year from now, that same stack of vacation and holiday pictures could cost you hundreds of dollars more with one brand compared to another.

Drop for drop, printer ink is probably the most expensive liquid you''ll ever buy, and all printer companies want to lock you into buying their ink cartridges. Canon is no different in this regard, but by keeping cost of ink reasonable, customers who print a lot of pictures won''t find they need a second mortgage to afford the ip5000.

Because printer companies "buy" market share by selling the printer at or below cost (This is basically how razor companies and video game console makers operate), they only profit from the consumables (ink cartridges, but also paper). This doesn''t make them greedy any more than taking a loss on the front end made them altruistic. It does, however, make it important that you understand this: while many specs are pretty comparable, cost-per-picture varies very, very widely by manufacturer. Forewarned is forearmed.

Aside form the confidence of knowing that I could be spending a lot more for cartridges, my experience with the ip5000 has been nothing but positive.

The included CD and quick-start guide walk you through setup step-by-step. Consumer electronics companies are not always, ahem, known for clarity of user manuals or supporting material.

Text quality on plain paper is very good, though not quite up to the standard of either of the much more expensive laser printers I compared it to. In fairness, this is a photo printer first, but it will do a fine job on envelopes, presentations, and letters.

Photo quality, naturally, is highly dependent on paper. The only bad experience was accidentally using laser paper and having the ink smear. Use the right paper and whenever possible, use glossy paper stock for pictures.

The design is excellent. Not too many years ago, almost all printers were boxy, angular and downright homely. This shows how far printers have come. Its polished black finish is reflective (like a good auto paint job), offsetting the matte titanium-look trim around the edges. It manages to look smaller than it actually is and will not visually dominate a desk.

Overall, a very well executed printer. Recommended.

My Epson C82''s print heads got clogged so I went on the hunt for a new printer. After a couple hours of investigation I decided to go with the HP Business Inkjet 1200d. I was very excited until I got home and hooked it up. I was very dissatisfied with the install, resolution quality, color tone, and software.

I took the printer back a got the ip5000 by Canon. Install was a snap, print quality is excellent, software is user friendly and packed with features. I am very pleased with the ip5000 and Highly recommend!!!

Want Canon PIXMA iP5000 Photo Printer Discount?

I''m repeating a post I made under the iP4000, the printer I bought, because these 2 printers are very similar. there may be something here that could impact your decision about the iP5000 (or be useful in your use of it) too.

---------------------------------------

I knew I was going with a Canon printer because of their reputation for having reasonably priced ink compared to all the other manufacturers (hp being the most expensive to use). I intended to buy one from their PIXMA series (said to be the fastest printers on the market; all offer Duplex/two-sided printing which I wanted). I really struggled between their high-end iP8500 and mid-range iP5000 & iP4000. I ultimately eliminated the 8500 and 5000 because neither had dual black ink cartridges (4000 has a 13 ml. for photos, and a bigger 27 ml. one for text). In the 8500 I didn''t want to have to be replacing 8 individual ink cartridges (some say those extra tanks don''t really make much difference, just cost more). While the 5000 had greater resolution than the 4000, my decision was also impacted by what I thought was a reputable review (PC magazine, I believe). The review said that the 5000 generated better text and graphics than the 4000, however at the expense of photos that weren''t as good and that printed slower. Another factor in my decision was that I could purchase the 4000 for 1/3 the retail price, dirt cheap compared to any other potential printer purchase out there. (Best Buy price matched with Office Depot, I had Best Buy RewardsZone certificates, a Best Buy gift card, and there was manufacturer rebate.)

After a solid week of Internet research, I ultimately did purchase the 4000 and I am very pleased with it. Below I''ve summarized my observations from my first week of usage of my new printer. Maybe I can save somebody from some of the research effort that I put into this purchase.

DESIGN: It''s beautiful, but it''s black shiny parts are potentially a dust-magnet. There''s no printer cable included. I had a spare on hand (it uses USB 2.0 cable with A/B connectors). Radio Shack was less than Best Buy, at $24.99 for a 6-foot. You could do better on the Internet via Amazon.com or eBay.com. Error messaging is cool; just count the amber blinks of the usually green power button, then check your manual for what it means. This thing is FAST! Text ink is pigment-based (longer lasting, less fading, rated 75-80 yrs., I think) and the colors are dye-based (rated 25-30 years, I think). Duplex capability is awesome.

POWER: Canon says they only recommend plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet. I have a Curtis Command Center power center, under my monitor. It conveniently locates power buttons for all of my computer components, as well as offering surge protection. I''ve used it for years with no difficulties. While I can turn my new printer off via the Curtis power buttons, I can''t turn the printer back on with it. The actual button on the printer must be pressed to turn it back on. My printer is not located immediately next to the computer, so I now have to stand up to physically hit that actual printer button.

QUIET MODE: For me, this feature is worthless. Canon says that using it will slow the print speed of the printer. Upon installation, this mode is turned off by default. In regular mode, this printer is pretty noisy when it starts out (much more than the hp DeskJet 825c that I just passed on to Mom), but when it''s printing sounds like most every other printer I''ve used. When it''s first starting out, some of those noises are a little scary, like something might be broken ... but it''s not.

AUTO-FEEDER (top): It doesn''t hold the advertised 150 sheets for most of us. Canon bases that particular estimate on 17 lb. paper! (Who uses that?! Almost everybody uses 20 lb.!) My very first text prints were from the Auto Feeder (top). They all printed extremely crooked until I reduced the paper stack quite a bit.

Standing in front of the printer, with a stack of paper inserted, it appears that the right bottom corner is forced to bend outward slightly from the printer design. Despite a number of attempts to reload the paper (after turning the paper various ways), this outward bend remained. (It can be kind of pressed into place though.) When I reduced the paper in the Auto Feed tray by half (that I''d previously filled to the capacity line marker), I still had the outward bend, but the crooked print problem was resolved.

The manual offers this work-around for a continued problem: Use only 1 sheet of paper in the Auto Feeder, or place multiple pages there, but by one sheet at a time (vs. an entire stack all at once).

PRINT SPEED: My printer is blazingly fast. I''m not experiencing any of the 15-second first page print delay that so many reviewers complain about with this printer. There''s maybe a 5-second delay at most! Perhaps that delay sometimes occurs on the first print after you''ve switched between the auto-feed or cassette trays, but I am pretty much not experiencing any problem with this.

INK DEPLETION OPTICAL SENSORS: They''ll monitor the individual ink tanks. When a cartridge has less than 20% left, you''ll be warned. Canon''s printers will work with an empty cartridge, unlike the Epsons (they lock up until you replace).

INK USE: This printer doesn''t suck it down. I''ve been using it heavily for a week now, generating all kinds of highest quality 8x10", 5x7" and 4x6" photo prints on Canon''s best papers, and all my ink tanks still look full. I''m amazed and impressed! Opened ink is recommended to be used up within 6 mos.

BLACK INK: Canon''s advised me that unless in Draft Quality mode (the only mode in which the black text ink cartridge is solely used), a small percentage of cyan and magenta ink will be used (for high-density/high-quality black text or photo-realistic quality images).

DRAFT QUALITY DUPLEX TEXT IS FAINT: I can print Draft quality non-Duplex text that is perfectly acceptable. Despite numerous attempts to improve this for Draft quality Duplex, including trying a higher quality paper, there was no improvement. In Draft quality Duplex mode, the prints are almost like those from an old dot-matrix printer! I''ve only been able to get anything close to satisfactory when selecting Standard quality for Duplex printing. This doesn''t make sense to me ... why should there be a difference just from selecting Duplex and changing nothing else. There has to be something different about the way the printer handles a Duplex vs. non-Duplex page. I sent an inquiry to Canon, and they really didn''t explain why this occurs in their reply. "As Draft quality indicates sacrificing some print quality in order to achieve faster print output, if faster print output and duplexing are required, there may be a noticeable decrease in quality."

PAPER MEDIA OPTIONS: Some of the Canon info materials are not current, but Canon confirmed for me that this printer will print any media listed in the driver''s Properties selection, including Transparencies and T-Shirt transfers. (The driver does not list Credit Card or Stickers media.) Because Canon''s bundled software is distributed with a number of their printer models, media choices that will not work with your particular printer model could appear in them. The 4000, cannot print to Credit Card media (the 5000 may be able to, but I''ve already mentioned why I didn''t select that model). I don''t believe it can print Stickers either. I inquired with Canon about why they state not to print to postcard media, but they didn''t answer my question. Note that while Canon recommends you not use non-Canon media above 28 lbs. with this printer, you''ll find numerous online reviews that state this is incorrect. Perhaps Canon just wants to drive sales of its own media.

CANON PHOTO PRO & PLUS MEDIA: I printed 4x6 glossy media samples of both, the two highest levels in their line. While the Pro paper had a bit heavier weight to it, it didn''t have much print quality difference from the Plus paper. I don''t feel the Pro paper is worth its exorbitant price; there''s just not enough of a difference. The Plus paper is a bit lighter weight, but it''s nice too; and it prices out to match my local Wal-marts digital photo prints. I even used an 8x photo loupe to really examine them closely. A loupe''s an inexpensive and really worthwhile purchase from your local camera shop (Natl. Camera Exchange, etc.) if you really want to look at a photo (or anything else) really up close. Amazing just how much texture you''ll see when looking at a plain piece of copy paper!

BLACK & WHITE PRINTS: Some complain about the quality of these photos on the Canon printers. I read a recommendation to use Canon Matte Photo Paper for the best results. I also read that matte prints will last 4x as long as a glossy print, and when stored behind glass or plastic could potentially last forever (from fading, deterioration).

CD/DVD LABELS: I talked with an Epson rep in an Office Depot store a few weeks ago. He said that Epson holds the U.S. patent for direct-printing on CD/DVDs and that this is why Canon can''t offer the feature yet (he said that patent would be expiring soon). You''ll see that the Canon printers are almost set up for it (cover blocks area and parts are missing, except in the UK version which does offer the feature). Canon says that they just "choose" to not offer this feature in the U.S. market, although they know that "Epson and at least 5 other printer manufacturers in the USA are releasing direct CD/DVD print features." As an alternative, I asked Canon for a recommendation of a standard adhesive label media that would work acceptably, but they didn''t answer my question. This isn''t a feature I figured that I''d be likely to use a lot, so it''s not very important to me. My research showed there are lots of disadvantages to using it anyway (takes forever to dry, not waterproof, doesn''t look as good as adhesive labels). For info on this, check out nealslade.com. He''s got an entire section just on this topic.

CASSETTE TRAY IS CONFUSING: It took me a bit to figure out how to operate this and I don''t like how the sliders don''t move easily. Pretty cheaply made. Hope it will be redesigned better in a future model, but this isn''t a big issue for me.

WHICH TRAY TO USE: Many reviewers say they keep photo paper in the cassette to keep it protected from dust etc. Reputable sources say it is not a good idea to keep photo paper in the cassette for any length of time because the paper will begin to age (yellow). They recommend inserting photo paper into the auto feeder instead (top vertical tray), only on an as-needed basis. This also keeps photo paper from having to go through a tighter turning print path. The cassette''s U-path can lead to jams and cracked paper coatings. The J-path of the auto feeder is a more gentle turning print path. I keep plain paper in my cassette and use the auto feeder intermittently for photo paper and other needs.

BUNDLED SOFTWARE: This stuff is usually junk, but I do like all 3 programs Canon includes: Easy PhotoPrint (no-brainer photo printing), Photo Record (scrapbook generator) and Easy-Web Print (no more Internet prints with a cutoff right margin!). Easy-WebPrint doesn''t seem to have a way that you can designate a print page range though, which is it''s only negative (especially when you''re Duplex printing and there''s a 3rd page with just a single line of text; the printer has to print that single line as well as pulling it back in for Duplex to print a blank page!). It does offer printing just a selection from a web page though (so I forgive it a little for that!).

MAINTENANCE: I haven''t had any issues with nozzles clogging (Epson sounds like its notorious for this), but my ownership is early yet. NeilSlade.com recommends running a color print once a day to help prevent this. He also recommends not running the CLEAN NOZZLES function very often, because it moves some ink into the printers waste tank. If the waste tank gets filled, you''ll need to pay to have the printer serviced to empty it. He says it''s better to do some photo prints instead to limit the possibility of this occurring.

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Canon''s replies to my e-mails have been unusually fast, which has impressed me. I made numerous inquiries and their replies usually came the very same day, often within a few short hours. They seem personalized too ... not the canned replies from so many others (that often don''t really answer the questions asked). Terrific job on that, even though they ignored a couple of things that I asked. They even have a dedicated toll-free number than you can use as much as you''d like for the first 30-days you have the printer.

EXCELLENT RESOURCES: During my research, I found these websites to be particularly useful: steves-digicams.com, tomshardware.com and neilslade.com. Neil''s got some excellent info on alternate sources of paper and ink, where you can clearly save some money. It''s clear to me that buying from your local store is NOT your best option! Use the Internet. If you don''t have much time for investigating, as usual Amazon.com can beat any local store on prices and product availability. eBay can have some great deals too. Of course Internet purchases require a little planning.

SUMMARY: There are good and bad points to all printers available, but I am very satisfied with this purchase. I tried to just detail the info that I wish I had found all in one place. Hopefully it helps you!

I read all the reviews I could, the big reviews complained about speed and claimed the photo''s didnt look as good as the existing printers from Cannon. I have to disagree, I can spit out a borderless 4x6 in about 40 seconds and use half the ink of other printers, and if it ever gets clogged, you can change out the print heads too, as long as they dont cost too much. Ink on a "major online auction site" can be found for 12.95 for all 5 tanks with free shipping. Cant beat that.

I will never again pay Lexmark for an overpriced quick to dry out ink refill. The color quality is spot on, and when held up to the prints from Wal-Marts digital developing look the same.

Prints from my Sony DSC 1.3MP camera dont look so great though, but from my Minolta Dimage 3.2MP they look awesome. Just dont plan on photo quality unless you have a good camera to start with.

I do wish they had enabled the CD/DVD print tray on the US, models, it looks like something that we could possibly make work by getting a driver and removing the blocking plate though. hmmm.

I love the duplex option, kind of rare in a home bound ink jet printer. The dual paper inputs is nice also, I keep regular paper in the bottom tray and feed all the photo, label and card stuff in the top tray. Its very quiet, you cant hear it in the next room. It doesnt shake at all like one reviewer said it did. All in all I love it.

Royal Alpha 850ML Cash Register with Bar Code Scanner

Royal Alpha 850ML Cash Register with Bar Code Scanner
  • Can handle 200 departments and 2,000 PLUs ( price lookups )
  • Multi-line, alphanumeric LCD clerk display with backlight - 1-line rear customer display
  • 4-bill / 5-coin tray locking cash drawer with removable coin tray
  • Can display 5 lines x 20 characters
  • 40 clerk IDs

The other model was suppose to be the same working functions as the 810ML, which I believe it is minus the handy drawer that went with the 810ML model. the model I received was sent without any notice of doing so therefore there was extra correspondence between the company and myself to guarantee the new model was going to work exactly the same as well as some comparison pricing on my behalf to make sure I wasn''t paying more than I was suppose to. I found a $21 discrepancy which I had to point out but, they did refund immediately.

Next time, I think the company should contact the purchaser about substituting a model before it is being shipped to the purchaser to receive confirmation that it is o.k. to do so or at least give the purchaser the opportunity to wait until the model ordered has come into their business.

I ordered one cartridge, the quality was very poor. I posted a review here, within 24 hours the company contacted me, apologized and shipped free replacements which work perfectly. It was really the best most thorough customer service I''ve seen in a long time. I''m satisfied and would buy from them again.

This product sounds like a great deal, but I was very disappointed in its quality. It does not work well with the printer and has caused several malfunctions. I''m switching back to the original HP cartridges despite their steep price tag--at least I know they work.

The product details very clearly list this as remanufactured/compatible, so it was my fault I ordered these, but with "genuine" and "brand name" in the title and the original packaging for the picture, you can see how I might have been confused. Hopefully, they work better than the last remanufactured ones I bought.

I was very disappointed when I received my ink cartridge since it was defective. I wanted to return it but it would cost me nearly as much to ship it back as it cost=$ 8.88. I decided to contact a cusotmer service rep and they were able to ok a refund once I complained. But if I hadnt complained and contacted a service rep, which 90% of people would not have done, then I would have just had to accept it and be out $ 8.88. I dont like their refund policy which states if you have a defective cartridge then you have to pay for shipping which is ridiculous when they are the ones responsible. The company knows that if you have to pay the shipping cost that will eliminate 90% of the complaints and return costs that they would have to pay. I will never use this cartridge replacement company again despite them refunding my money.

The product works perfectly with my HP printer. I carefully noted my printer''s model number and the model of the cartridge I had previously to make sure it would work. I double checked that with Amazon''s tool to be absolutely sure this was the right cartridge. The cartridge is the exact size and shape of my current HP 56 cartridge, but of course has a different label. It is in every way indistinguishable from the original other than the label. This is a great product for the price. I just started using it. Not sure how long it will last, but since it only costs 1/5 as much as a new HP cartridge, if it only lasts 1/5 as long as the last one I will still be satisfied.

My five year old Canon MP500 finally died. So I spent a weekend reviewing all-in-one printer reviews, but it seemed that for any given printer, 20% of the reviews were very negative, which wasn''t helpful. So I decided to just get something inexpensive and to buy locally so I could return it easily if need be. A local chain store had this printer on sale, and I also had a "rewards" coupon that I could apply to it, so it was definitely inexpensive.

Setup was incredibly easy: unpack the printer (its very light weight), connect the supplied USB cable to the Mac (v. 10.6), insert the CD, and follow the online instructions. The instructions show you how to install the ink, switch to wireless mode, and runs an initial alignment test. There are just two ink cartridges: black and a tri-color (61/61XL is the cartridge type). During setup, I saw the message "Authentic HP Ink Cartridge," so I don''t know if it will accept refills. I''ll post later when I find out.

I don''t print a lot (another reason why I wanted an inexpensive printer), but I did try to print, copy, and scan, and it all worked. FYI, you can scan to jpeg or PDF. This printer does not print duplex (two-sided). Also, the supplied USB cable is only 3'' long, which would restrict locating the printer, but if you go wireless you won''t need the cable.

All things considered, so far it seems to be a very good printer for home use or just occasional printing. If it printed duplex, I''d have given it 5 stars.

UPDATE: I ran into a problem when trying to scan to JPEG. If you are trying to scan something that has a lot of white space and no border (like the back of a check!), the scanner apparently gets confused because it can''t distinguish the edge of whatever you''re trying to scan from the white pad under the cover. As a workaround, I literally taped the check to a piece of paper and drew a border around it with a pen! Then the scanner worked just fine! Scanning things that have more contrast and color seems to be ok.

UPDATE 2: Ok, I''ve resolved the scanning issue thanks to Karen of Tacoma who posted the hint that helped me! The printer has an LCD screen with a set of menus. If I try to scan from the LCD screen menus, I get the poor result I mentioned in the first update. However, if I start the "HP Utility" software on my computer and choose the "Scan" application from there, then I get a complete scan and some editing features.

I had an old hp PSC1210 that lasted for over 5 years. Because I refill the cartridges, my printing costs were very low and the printers longevity is amazing! So I looked at the alternatives. In this price range, all the alternative all-in-ones at Walmart are pretty much the same: inkjet printing, wireless, dark grey/black color and all about the same size.

So I bought the Hp 3510.

Setup was interesting. I installed it to my desktop first, which required I connect the USB cable (included) momentarily to tell the printer my WEP password. Be careful! There''s a setup option to remove the hp bloatware but you have to select the "customize" installation button. (I wish that they wouldn''t make it so sneaky!) I installed the basic printer software and the HP update software. I ended up with only 2 new icons on my desktop, an ''HP shop" and an ''Hp utility. I removed the ''hp shop''. The ''utility'' feature has a lot of junk that I really don''t need.

I had a little trouble setting up my other PC''s. First I shared the desktop printer, as I had previously, but then I thought, why keep my desktop on all the time? So I turned the printers "HP wireless direct" on and used this from my laptop. But then I realized that I needed to disconnect from my home network, and connect directly to the printer to use it, then reconnect to the network again. This would be a pain! I configured another laptop similarly. The next day I went back to fix it to use the home network and I found out that the laptops had reconfigured itself to connect through the internet! Cool!

I also connected a mac to the printer. Actually, I gave the install disk to my son and he did it. He said it didn''t work, but when I came back the next day to fix it, it worked!

I tested the scanning feature. It works good on any of the PC laptops. I haven''t tried it on the mac.

My old HP had the paper load and eject from the front but this one feeds in from the top back, so I had to move the new printer to a new spot. It only holds 10 to 15 pages. Make sure to put the page exit extension out or it spits the pages onto the floor.

The old printer had dedicated buttons to copy, scan etc. This one has a small LCD screen with menu options. The screen pops up to make it easier to see, but then you can''t push the buttons. The buttons don''t have good tactile feedback, I often had to push twice, and often it registered twice when I pushed twice. And the menu/button structure isn''t very intuitive. There''s an ''up'' a ''down'' to scroll through the menu and an ''OK'' and a ''-'' (minus sign) but on the screen there''s often 2 choices to select, one is the ''OK'' button, another is the ''minus''. I thought minus meant ''abort''. "Abort" is an ''turn back'' arrow.

Printed pages look good, I don''t see any real differences between this printers output and the old one, but I''m not that particular. I don''t see any glaring problems.

So ,it installs and works fine. I only gave it 4 stars because of the software/bloatware issues and the less than stellar user interface. I''ll update this when I find out how easy it is to refill the ink cartridges.

Update 12/16/12

The software complained that the original ink cartridges were getting low after about 60-70 pages. So I refilled them with the ink I got from my old hp psc-1210. It was pretty easy, just a hypodermic needle poked into the holes on top of the cartridge. After a few inkjet cleaning pages (basically all black or all red etc.) to move the new ink into the cartridge the pages look fine.

The software complains about the inkjet being low, but it still prints. On my wife''s windows 7 starter laptop, it complained that the cartridge was "low or counterfeit" but it still printed. Curiously, my vista PC, my sons mac and my daughters windows 7 didn''t complain.

I bought this e-printer during the Christmas specials (local store) for $70 and it''s been doing a bang out job, abeit minor quirks for the past 4-6 weeks. I stress using the CD to load/program the printer to your computer(s). My hubby loaded it on his Mac and tried to program our 3 other computers via the online link but that didn''t prove lucky. I didn''t waste my time trying to figure out the kink--I just re-installed on our other (non-Mac) computers with no problems by using the CD. We have been successful using the iPhone to print also but I haven''t tried my Android phone yet.

The only con is the same with any printer on the face of the earth ink cartridges. Right, companies don''t make money on the printer but the replacement ink cartridges. Thus, this one has small ink cartridges. However, it''s only 2 cartridges vs our other mega ''all-in-one'' that uses 5 cartridges. That printer works great & the ink lasted a long time but going e-printer was the level we needed with a few less printer features.

We have the 3510 for home useage only, so we nix the fax capabilities and this is where a part of the savings is in cost I''m guessing? (funny enough, it has a fax cover sheet in the preprogram forms on the printer database so you''re covered if you need it!)

It can scan, print, copy. It doesn''t do advance work like suck in multiple pages to copy or do double sided. However there are a dozen or so pre-programmed forms for easy printing such as calendars, coversheets, music sheets, checklist and even Sudoku games. You are able to add your own self-made forms to the printer memory.

It does what it needs to do good. A little noisy but nothing distracting. In fact, my son (in his room) likes to hear the printer kick in so he knows that the printer got the prntjob. He can''t hear the 3510 after the initial start.

I agree, this printer is for light to medium printing. 4 stars because until there''s a never ending supply of ink, it''s hard to find a printer that should get 5...IMHO.

  • Foil return address labels for inkjet printer.

  • Glossy finish foil for brilliant color and sharp text quality.
  • Perfect for seasonal and special occasion mailings.

These labels work great; I used them with Adobe Illustrator (and the online templates therefor) and had no problems. However, there is a regular 8.5x11 piece of paper in the box with the labels with "label outlines" to use as a test, and, for whatever reason, THAT did not conform well to the template. So when I did a trial run it was rather disappointing, but I just said, "Screw it." And printed a (partial) sheet of labels, which came out perfect. Not sure why the trivial components of the package would be the least well implemented, but be warned. That said, the final product was great.

You''ll also want to use bold text on these, since the bold labels I made look MUCH better and are MUCH more readable than the more stylized, thin fonts I tried out.

I was afraid the ink would smudge on the foil but it doesn''t! My labels turned out beautifully. They look like they were professionally printed.

OK, I''ll admit it: I''m an office supply junkie always searching for the perfect label, perfect file folder, perfect mechanical pencil under $10, etc. I jump at the opportunity to review these items, so here we are ...

I''ve been using these gold foil labels to make some very nice return address labels (I don''t mail much these days, but when I do, I like to use nice labels). I''ve also used them to make labels to put in books that I loan to friends, in the hope that the book will someday find its way back home.

They feed perfectly in my HP Photosmart inkjet printer. I''ve never had a problem of any kind with hang-ups, misfeeds, jamming, etc.

The size of these is perfect for my use; sometimes, these address labels can be a tad too small. Not these. The size is generous enough that I can include my phone number on my book labels.

These are perfect return mailing labels. They adhere well to the envelope, ink from my inkjet printer transferred beautifully to each label, and of course the metallic gold color looks really great especially when sending out specialty cards or announcements that you just want to have a more sophisticated look. Good luck however if you would like to simply write on these (maybe for file folders for organization, etc.) as ball point ink don''t really work despite how hard you press and markers smear. If you purchase these specifically for your return mailing labels, you won''t be disappointed.

Epson Stylus Photo 580 All In One Inkjet Printer

Epson Stylus Photo 580 All In One Inkjet Printer
  • All-in-one printer -- for photos, documents and CDs
  • Borderless 4x6 photos in as fast as 13 sec; up to 30 ppm black/color text*
  • 2.5" display and card slots to select, crop and enlarge photos -- PC free
  • ClariaTM Hi definition ink for smudge, scratch, water and fade resistant prints
  • Automatic photo correction, red-eye removal, direct printing onto CD/DVDs -- no messy labels

I''ve owned 4 or 5 other Epson printers (as well as several from HP) in the past, but the Stylus Photo RX580 all-in-one is the easiest to use printer I''ve ever had, with excellent picture quality and a very good built-in scanner as well. Combine that with the fact that it is the least expensive of the printers I have bought and you''ll see why I consider this a bargain.

Let me start with the scanner -it is quiet and fairly fast. The supplied TWAIN compatible software has three levels: fully automatic, "home" use, and professional. It works well. The resolution is fine for home use, although it is not a scanner for film or slides. The scanner integrates with the printer allowing use as a stand-alone copier. It can also copy photos directly to the face of an (inkjet printable) CD or DVD. And there are some interesting surprises -you can print an index of a memory card -then fill in a few choices (with a black pencil or pen -like a test answer sheet) and scan the index sheet and the printer will print photos from the memory card, only the photos you choose on the index sheet, sized and borders as you selected. Very cool -and easy to use. The scanner also allows you to directly prepare greeting cards without the computer.

The print quality is quite good. The Claria inks are dye-based inks (NOT pigment, as incorrectly stated in other reviews) giving them bright colors, and able to print on many surfaces. This is one of Epson''s "Hi-Definition" printers -which means tiny droplets and great pictures. The inks are separately replaceable, and available in two sizes (regular and high capacity -from Epson direct -50% more ink for only $5 more). The printer works best with Epson papers, and can print on virtually any stock Epson sells. It also creates excellent prints directly on printable CDs and DVDs -the results can look very good, and are much better than add -on labels.

The 2.5" built in color LCD is very useful -it allows meaningful dialogues with the printer as well as previews of images from memory cards, etc.

The printer is fully Mac compatible (as well as PC) and includes some useful software, including a CD/DVD print layout program.

What does it lack? Well, an USB cable -but, unfortunately, most prints ship without a cable. It doesn''t do paper sizes bigger than 8.5" wide, and its not aimed at professional photographers (who want larger images, higher resolution scanners, and more permanent pigment inks), but for home/office use it works quite well.

All in all an excellent all-in-one at a reasonable price. I''m very happy with it.

My wife and I bought this mainly to print on DVDs/CDs, but we have discovered that this can do so much more! This is really an impressive product. Here is what we have tried so far.

1. Printing on DVDs/CDs--outstanding quality and the ink dries quickly.

2. Scanning--better than our HP 1315v (which we like) and a lot quieter.

3. Copying--only done black and white so far but it was crisp.

Things we look forward to trying: making our own family photos without having to pay high prices at a portrait studio (any size we want too); printing pics off of a PDA or cell phone; printing our own greeting cards by selecting what we want with a pencil or pen and then scanning our selections; printing photos on our choice of paper by marking our selections with a pencil and scanning the results and doing this all PC-free!

We haven''t found anything we dislike about this product but we have noticed a couple of things. First, your text/copies/pictures will look good depending on your quality of paper. We noticed that on cheap letter paper heavy amounts of ink will make the paper a little wet. It''s no big deal if it is something unimportant. Second, we didn''t like all of Epson''s backgrounds for the DVDs/CDs. We liked the ones from Memorex''s Expressit Label Design Studio a little better. So after some tinkering, my wife was able to convert Memorex''s backgrounds (using Corel Photo Album 6) into jpgs and put them into Epson''s folder of backgrounds. So that has worked great.

We really thought the small ink cartridges would be a problem but after printing about 5 CDs and some other small graphics the ink levels haven''t even moved. A coworker has an RX550 and has cautioned to remove the ink cartridges from the printer if you are going to be gone on a long trip (say more than a week). He was gone over a month and says the lack of use caused the ink to dry out. He had to get new cartridges and run the maintenance cycle 6 or 7 times to get back on track. We will probably take the cartridges out and seal them up when we go on long trips.

Overall this is a GREAT product! We are impressed and look forward to using it a lot!

November 11, 2006 UPDATE: Since we wrote this same review on Circuit City''s website, we still think this is a GREAT printer. The images printed on DVDs/CDs are excellent. We have noticed that it uses ink a little faster than non-photo printers but the color(s) that get used depend on the color of your images. That makes sense to us. We didn''t have any major problems with software installation. The only snag is that it wants to restart your computer before it is finished setting everything up. We were able to make choices and finish the setup (including the calibration page) by clicking on our choices in the background. After we were done, we clicked on the Windows message box in the foreground to restart the computer. It''s really no big deal.

Three more things. First, we still haven''t tried out all of the features. Second, when the printer first sucks in the paper it is a little noisy. It startles you, but you don''t need ear plugs. We quickly got used to it though. We can stand a little noise for great print quality. Third, after scouring the internet it looks like Newegg has the best deal on ink cartridges for this printer. We didn''t see any high capacity ink cartridges on their site but we figure that this will change eventually. Also, we figure that prices will come down a little once the regular capacity and high capacity cartridges become available at more businesses.

I thing this printer is really good at each of its features. I have been very impresed with its printing of 4x6 pictures, which is the main reason we bought it. The pictures are very clear and well basically they look like they are supposed to. We have printed several pictures up to 8x10 and the quality does not have much of a drop off if any at all.

The scanner works well as well. We scanned a few pictures of Fenway taken with a 35mm. Instantly I was on the editor, first time using the software, and I made the picture look better than the one I scanned. I reprinted the picture and it looks very nice. Almost like being there again watching Pedro beat Mussina!

As far as black printing, for text, it leaves something to be desired. I usually would print my old all in one (Lexmark 125) on draft quality and it printed out fairly well. On draft quality here, it does not print very dark at all. I was disappointed in that, but when you change settings it looks sharp. It just uses more ink.

I was really impressed with the print to CD thing. I have never been able to do that, so the first time my wife and I tried it, and it turned out as well as it did, we were very happy.

Really good printer, considered this and the HP c5180, and choose this because it appeared to be better for pictures.

Works as advertised as a printer, card reader, and copier, but the scanning is only fair. The print quality on Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy (S041727) is outstanding, and at least as good, if not better than Wallyworld photo center or even the more expensive Kodak Perfect Picture mail-out prints. I''m printing 2 and 5 megapixel digital photos, and both turn out great. I''ve printed from computer and directly from the memory card, and the speed and quality are equally good in either mode.

If the scanner was good for anything but basic copying, I''d give this 4 or 5 stars. Even at very high DPI settings, a scan of a photograph is terrible. The scanner does not pick up a good range of color regardless of the settings you use. The scan function doesn''t even come close to the cheapo HP 2200C I bought for $10 at a garage sale. The "scan" function will be adequate for the kids'' school work and a couple of document copies you may need around the house or school, but don''t get this if you need it for high quality scans.

-1.5 stars for bad scanning, and -.5 stars for high ink consumption rate and cost.

I''ve read the reviews and not one of them mentioned the fantastic feature of photo restoration. I have restored many yellow 1960''s and 1970''s pictures and they look like I took them today. The colors are fantastic!! This printer even restores polaroid pictures. I have also printed copies of recent pictures and they too look wonderful. A professional photographer talked me into this printer and I''m so glad he did!! Everything else on the printer works well, as well.

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM) I''ve been using Avery 5160 return address labels for years, so I was interested in how the "Easy Peel" differed from the older ones I still had. When I took the first sheet out of the box, I was immediately concerned about the weight of the backing; the sheets seemed much flimsier than those I had remaining in my old box, a choice obviously made in the interest of the pop-up edges. Once I printed a sheet of both and compared the labels themselves, they seemed comparable. However, a couple of issues emerged: it was slightly more difficult to manually insert a sheet of the Easy Peel so that the labels lined up correctly because the sheets were more likely to bow, and printed labels stored in a file folder were more likely to catch and come off when pulled in and out. Despite this, these labels maintain the Avery quality the company has been known for, and they stick well and completely to envelopes. Note: these labels are for laser printers, not for inkjets.

The Easy Peel feature is only marginally better than the old style, which I never found difficult to remove. Here, you fold the sheet along each row, and a small portion of the labels'' ends pop up. It definitely can save time if you''re doing a lot of mailing/labeling; however, most people won''t care. I appreciated the feed arrows since I always forget which end should be up when feeding manually. I printed ten sheets out of the box, in rapid succession, and other than the lining up issue noted above, every sheet came out smoothly and perfectly printed.

Although Microsoft Word has the necessary template for these labels in its project gallery, buyers can also get the correct template at the Avery website (address supplied on the box).

I''ve used several different brands of mailing labels, and I always come back to Avery. Despite the lighter backing of these labels to enable the "Easy Peel," the labels themselves maintain the same high quality. I just wish the ease of removal could be combined with a slightly heavier/stiffer backing. Five stars for the label quality, three stars for the Easy Peel design.

I love labels, or anything that makes life easier. I am very organized, both at work and at home. Labels make things so much more convenient and quicker.

I love these labels. They don''t necessarily have to be used with a printer they can be written on. And the reason I say this, is because these labels are for Laser Printers, and I have ink jet printers. Therefore, I can still use these, because I can write on them rather than running them through the printer.

There are a variety of uses for labels. In addition to addresses, files, and other office reasons, they can be used for jars, boxes, etc.

Awesome product.

Avery has always been good to work with, The background is always very bright white. If your printer is good, they never fail giving a clear great contrast. I have started to use P-Touch which is much faster. However if you don''t have a label maker such as P-Touch then this is the label paper for you. User friendly and most word processors have it built into there data base for your use.

I ordered 2 color HP print cartridges from Vivamart. They came in a short 3 days which was good, But when I opened the mail package there were 2 color cartridges wrapped in clear plastic. there was ink inside the mail package and I got ink all over my hands when I took the 2 cartridges out. Also there was ink inside the clear plastic wrap for one of the cartridges. I emailed the seller, Vivamart. Their answer to me was that this can happen sometimes in the shipping process. They have told me they will replace the leaking cartridge. So this is acceptable. I have one good cartridge to use while the leaking one is being replaced.

I admittedly never bought from this seller before, but I thought since Amazon backed them I would get a good product. I spent $19.65 on this color cartridge. I put it in today & printed a total of eight pages of color pictures with black text. My printer immediately started blinking a warning to change my cartridge. I checked my computer thinking there was an error. Nope, after only eight pages printed, the color cartridge is empty. Eight pages of print for $19.65?! What a waste!

This scanner is simply the best I have ever seen. The flat bed scanners and the all-in-ones I have used with my Intel iMac G5 all suffered from various problems that made scanning a maddening experience that I couldn''t fit into the work flow of any project regardless of how simple it might have seemed. Most scanners are geared for the PC world and Mac software is mediocre at best and usually flat out useless. This scanner and its software are aimed at the Mac market and they have done it the right way.

Following the quick start instructions to the letter, and I suggest you read them all the way through before starting, I had the unit up and running in a few minutes.

It doesn''t take long to see the beauty of opening the unit and putting something in to be scanned, pressing the "scan" button and seeing the resulting PDF on your screen within seconds! There are many output and storage options as well, to fit just about any workflow application.

This scanner has become a key part of my day to day work, and I can''t imagine trying to do without it.

The unit has a small footprint and for power has a power cord or it can be powered by the appropriate type of USB port making it portable as well. This small size makes the unit mobile, but the tradeoff is that you can''t scan bound volumes.

Any group of pages I have loaded in the document feeder (and I have loaded as many as 11) have been scanned flawlessly in seconds.

This is a great product.

Tiny. Fast. Push one button. (Although there''s also a very nifty Quick Menu that let''s you rename, file in a specific location, send to iPhoto, print, email, etc.)

It''s unbelievably small and light and unbelievably fast.

I''m an artist/designer/educator and I''m always clipping images and arcane bits of text. I sent odd size pieces of flimsy paper from the New York Times magazine without a hitch.

I love this product. It''s one of the best purchases I ever made.

If you can, go for the 510M, its big brother. This one is smaller, and can be USB powered (if you don''t mind the speed divided by 2) if you want a clean desktop. But the footprint of both scanners is nearly the same, speed boost on the 510M makes a huge difference in every day use.

The text recognition software bundled in the 510M is a must have : it allow full text indexing with spotlight on MacOS, so you can recover an scanned invoice in a matter of seconds. On this 300M you need to name your files correctly.

Except that, 300M is a very good piece of hardware, silent, fast, reliable.

This scanner is, perhaps, the single most amazing peripheral I have ever used in my 25+ years of computing. Simply put, it does EXACTLY what it claims to do: Duplex scan darn near any document you can feed through its scanning mechanism (Only limitation is it cannot scan thick or bound items so if that is your need, you will have to revert to a flatbed scanner).

However, for document scanning, this scanner coupled with DevonThink Pro Office is a 5 star paperless office solution. If it is a piece of flat paper (or similar substance I have successfully scanned plastic & thin metal as well!) it scans into your mac and DevonThink takes care of the OCR and document filing inside DevonThink''s outstanding (again 5 Star) document archive/management software.

If you are truly wishing to move to the *practical* era of a "paperless office" This scanner and DevonThink are your complete solution.

What is really amazing? you can kick this puppy into "Hi Rez" mode (600DPI) and scan in photos that you can manipulate in photoshop and print on a 6 color inkjet printer at 8x10" print size with photorealistic results. NO this is not a dedicated 4800DPI professional scanner! But GEEZE! You are scanning photos on the road and on the fly :-)

This dinky thing is not much bigger than a large paperback book and:

* comes with a free (by mail) carrying case,

* CAN power itself off your MacBook/Pro''s USB port

* (scans using USB power are @ 20% slower in my experience but who cares! you are scanning ANYWHERE and ANYTIME!)

* has a completely bulletproof recovery from scan jams

* (yes they DO happen and one button fixes it and the darn Fujitsu scanning software is smart enough to self-correct and ask you to rescan the jammed sheet--even in the middle of a 30+ page scan!)

* It will scan stacks of different sized paper and auto-recognize the size! (For instance, for my non-profit work I will scan a 8x10" event report sheet and immediately follow that with a 3x6" business-size check I have successfully scanned a stack of 10 reports & checks in one session)

* Is 100% Mac-Like in operation: It *JUST WORKS*

* Unpack it, plug it in, open the lid, insert sheet, scan, DONE!

(Disclaimer: I do not work for either Fujitsu or DevonThink, although I have beta tested DevonThink in the past, I am a PAID licensee of DevonThink Pro Office YES it is THAT good! :-)

Just get this scanner you will NOT regret it!

The Dymo LabelWriter 400 Turbo works great. What doesn''t work well is the "No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps(tm) postage labels." Everything works great until you want to purchase postage for your package you are shipping. With the free software provided you can print a wide range of pre-selected postage amounts, but you cannot print a specific dollar amount. To ship your Priority Mail package with the correct amount of postage, you will still have to go to the Post Office or purchase a $9.95 monthly service plan. Of course, this is not explained to you until after you purchase the unit and set up your account. In my opinion the "No-Monthly-Fee DYMO Stamps(tm) postage labels" is clearly bait and switch. If you ship a few packages a month, the monthly service charge is not worth the cost.

Buy Dymo 69110 LabelWriter 400 Turbo Now

The one and only reason I purchased this label printer was for the highly touted Dymo Stamps feature, supposedly giving you the ability to print your own postage stamps onto thermal postage labels for no monthly fee, only the cost of the printer and the thermal label refills. According to the Dymo Stamps website, Dymo Stamps gives you the ability to "Print Exactly the Amount of Postage you Need" and "Eliminate the Need for Costly Postal Meters." What the consumer is not told upfront is that these "precise" amounts of postage can only be in denominations of the Dymo Stamps software''s choosing, not any amount you want. In fact, the only postage denominations that can be printed are those already available in stamp form at the post office, basically just your run-of-the-mill $0.39 stamps, $4.05 Priority Mail stamps, and postcard stamps. This software also does not give you the capability to print postage for Parcel Post, Media Mail, or Express Mail, and doesn''t allow you to add additional postage for services like insurance or certified mail at all. How this saves you any trouble over buying stamps from the post office is beyond me. Conveniently, you can only overcome all of these limitations by subscribing to Endicia (Dymo Stamps'' backbone provider) for a monthly fee. Heck, you can''t even go to an office supply store to buy the thermal postage label refills that you need to print postage on; they can only be ordered online through a link in the Dymo Stamps software. Especially given the fact that even the least expensive Dymo Stamps capable LabelWriter model is over $100, this will NOT save you any money in postage, will NOT save you any time, and ordering stamps online from USPS (or getting them from the local post office) is just as convenient, if not more convenient, than ordering the stupid thermal refills online from Dymo and waiting for them to arrive. Thankfully, Amazon is great at accepting returns.

I have been using Stamps.com for my online business for about 2 years. Up till now I have been printing postage using a standard laser printer. Using this method I had to load individual sheets to print just 1 label, and often had paper jams, which sometimes resulted in lost postage funds. Not anymore! This dymo 400 turbo works flawlessly with stamps.com and prints individual postage labels in seconds. No more messing around with label sheets and loading trays. Best of all it doesn''t use any toner, it uses thermal label rolls. (Laser toner is expensive) The 3-part postage label rolls are quite inexpensive, and the print quality is excellent. This baby should be paying for itself within 6 months. Cut my packing & shipping time almost to half. BTW, it also includes it''s own software for making custom labels.

December 2007 Update

Yep, I still love this machine. Just walked down the hall and printed 26 stamps in less than 1 minute.

Initial Post/Jan 4, 2007

I purchased the LabelWriter 400 Turbo and then read the reviews. I was a bit scared that I had purchased a lemon. However, it arrived today and I couldn''t be happier.

Setup was easy for both the LabelWriter and Endicia Stamps. I printed my first stamp within 10 minutes of opening the box. It took 2 tries for the machine to align the stamp labels properly but after that it''s on target. Notice, I said the machine aligned the labels; I did not have to do anything except for ask it to print a test label. Yes, you can print test labels both in the setup and on the Endicia site before you actually print your postage.

Endicia offers a large variety of denominations for stamps. If you need a larger denomination, it is not necessary to purchase multiple 39 cent stamps, just combine larger denominations. If you need media mail, buy that denomination and then Write Media Mail on the envelope. Don''t make it harder than it has to be.

The LabelWriter has a 2 year warranty and that should be sufficient to replace anything that goes wrong. After 2 years, I should hope that the company is innovative enough to have improved on this product.

I almost bought this machine a few months back but I walked away. I am so glad that I own it now and that Dymo has partnered with Endicia to offer postage without a monthly service fee.

I bought a Dymo 400 Turbo several years ago (also at Amazon) and decided to get another one for a separate business computer. There were some really nice improvements in the equipment and the software. Big compartment for forms is big enough to just drop a roll in without putting on spool which saves time. Also, the form feed button on the front is new which is a fast easy way to align forms to make ready for use.

I highly recommend this very practical product.

I bought these cartridges a while back, and when I needed to use one to replace an empty cartridge in my Brother MFC-J410W, it would not go in. I didn''t want to force it and risk breaking something. Wrote Amazon, and the seller wrote me back fairly quickly saying they tested it in a my exact printer, and it worked. The inference was that I might be inserting it backwards or upside down, but I had inserted it in just the same way as the original Brother cartridge (which I had just removed??); the Brother had slid in smoothly and perfectly, the LD had not. So I went back to try again. This time, after changing angles of approach and reinserting numerous times, it finally inserted all the way and I could click it in, and it works in the printer so far.

I cannot attest to the longevity of the ink amount in the cartridge yet. As far as I can tell, no mechanical glitches; but I will be sure to comment if one or the other is a problem.
