We use labels daily mailing/shipping, product packaging, and more. I must admit I''ve never been a loyal Avery customer sometimes their white labels are slightly higher quality than other brands, but we always seem to find generics that work just as well, for a fraction of the price.

But these new line of products by Avery (print-to-edge, product & mock-up labels) have got us really excited. They look great, they come in great colors, the price points are good, and they have soooo many uses. I hope to see even more colors & choices in the future.

And, I''m a long time fan of the Avery web site we often use their "Design & Print Online" feature, even if we aren''t using Avery brand labels. We tend to use Open Office, Microsoft Office, and Google Docs for our word processing, and none of the label templates seem to work well with those programs. So we use the Avery web site, which is clunky, but layout is straightforward and we usually don''t have time or energy to mess around.

So now I''m a much, much bigger fan of Avery they have both products and a web site we can get excited about. These particular labels are 2.5" diameter (smaller than you might imagine in your head), but work great for gift bags, books & CDs, and things like that. They are high quality, look great, no jams, etc. An all around great product.

Some tips on using these:

-If you are doing a complex design, download the template in advance, make sure it works for you, and/or try to find alternative sources for templates. Our designs are usually quite simple text + simple logo.

-Run a test print first, then hold it up to the light under your sheet of labels (making sure it matches up).

-The kraft brown background color is dark. We decided only to print in black, to ensure the label is readable.

-Before buying the Avery print-to-edge product labels, make sure you''re getting the size you really need. Cut out a 2.5" circle from a piece of cardboard, & hold it up to your product to get a feel for it. I know this sounds silly, but I''ve heard this feedback from so many people that the size "sounded" right, but it didn''t end up working for them.

I was really excited about this product as my previous experience with Avery labels and my inkjet printer has been terrific. However the templates for these labels leave a lot to be desired so I''m giving this product an overall 3 stars because the templates are crucial to printing good looking labels, especially when using circles, and they fell short in my opinion.

The Labels

The labels themselves are of excellent quality; nice, thick paper (but not too thick that it jams cycling through a printer). The color for the kraft labels is quite dark. I tried printing light colors, but they washed out on the darkish background. If you printdarker colors and have an inkjet printer with good color saturation, you can achieve some beautiful effects. The labels stick nicely to a variety of surfaces'' glass, some plastic, cellophane, paper, cardboard, even metal (I''m not sure how long it will last, but so far so good). So the labels themselves get 5 stars.

The Templates

Here''s where I had a lot of trouble. I should mention I''m using a Mac, and tried several different templates with both Pages and MSOffice. I got nearly the same results with both, although using the templates in Pages was a lot easier when handling text and editing the template to for optimal results. The first template I downloaded and printed was way off from the label (yes, I checked my doc settings). I tinkered around with the template until I was able to get the text and design lined up and centered. Hoping it was just that particular template, I downloaded a few other templates from the Avery site but unfortunately, the results were the same: the template design was way off from the circle label when printed. I resorted to making a bunch of copies of the label sheet to use as I monkeyed with the template in order to get everything lined up properly and avoid wasting the label sheets. It was actually easier to create my own template and copy elements from the Avery template onto my own.

One other drawback to the templates if you are using the kraft color labels is that many of the templates have a colored background which don''t print nicely on the kraft color template. They do make the labels in white and other shapes and I suspect the non-circular shapes are easier to center for printing as it is with other Avery labels. Maybe this is inherent in printing circular labels, but I was really looking forward to getting beautiful circle labels from my inkjet printer without spending an inordinate amount of time to get there.

I purchased these labels to be my product labels for my jams and jellies that I sell. The labels fit perfectly on the top of all my regular mouth jars. The color is a little bit darker than I expected but it actually looks great with the color that I print on it.

The labels are extremely sticky so you don''t have to worry about the labels coming off easily. They are also very eye catching so that''s a plus.

My only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that the template that Avery provides for this product absolutely SUCKS. If you use it and then save it for future use, you will be unable to reuse it because it splits into 4 pages instead of 1 and you end up wasting labels for a stupid template error. I end up having to download the template every time I use it because I don''t want to waste them or end up printing outside the lines.

Otherwise, I highly recommend this product and it is made from 100% recycled material which is GREAT if you have a business that is eco-friendly.

These labels are a really nice option for a small craft business. The Kraft paper instead of the usual white printer labels lends a more sublte, professional look to your packaging. They''re especially great for natural or minimally-processed products or green packaging, lending a nice finishing touch. Since I usually use a laser printer, I really like that they make a plain black laser print look especially nice--plain white labels look much more DIY with just black. I love products from Avery, and was excited to try out another of their new products. I do quite a bit of mailing and filing, so I go through a lot of labels.

The labels in this pack are round and made of a thick, craft paper-like material. I wondered if it might be too thick to go through the printer, but that was a needless worry. When trying to set up the template, I saw that since the labels are so new, they are not in the label database that is part of Windows. Because of this, I had to go online directly to Avery.com. Thankfully, their template program is incredibly easy to navigate and very user intuitive. Avery''s template program also offers some wonderful graphics to help customize your label as well as the option to upload your own photos or graphics. When it comes time to print, another window opens up with a PDF file that you can save to your desktop for future use.

After creating the designs I wanted, I printed off a page of labels. As the label color is that of medium-brown kraft paper (think a couple of shades darker than a paper grocery bag), not all colors will work well; some of the lightest ones barely even show up. Black and darker greys come out beautifully, as do darker blues, greens and reds (the darkest blues and greens tend to look black FYI). Avery makes these same labels in white if you wish for your design to be colorful and bright. These kraft brown labels are more for dark and shaded graphics.

As I mentioned earlier, these labels are thicker than Avery''s typical white mailing labels. Even peeled off of the backing, they feel quite substantive. For crafters who make and sell items like soaps, candles, canned/bottled/jarred goods, etc. these labels are very professional looking and stick incredibly well to almost every surface. Removing them not so easy.

I''ve already used up most of the pack I received via Vine, and am hoping that my local office supply stores have them in stock. Reorganizing the pantry was made a little bit more fun by designing and using my own labels. I''ve also used them for address return labels, which makes for quite an eye-catching letter. These labels also make very pretty and professional looking book plaques. At first when I received these labels, I wasn''t sure what I would use these labels for. Now? I''m afraid I''ll run out mid-project.

I have to admit, I was a bit sceptical when I first heard about the Capshare. Why would I want to pay all that money for a glorified half-page-width B&W hand scanner? After all, I bought one of those a decade ago (Logitech Scanman, for the curious geeks out there) for far less than the street price of the Capshare.

But my scepticism faded fast as I started to play with a friend''s new Capshare. What an amazingly useful electronic tool! The Capshare really works, and really works smoothly. Pages are sewn together seamlessly, and displayed on the LCD panel on the back; no fuss, no guesswork. And ah, the applications! When I''m at the library, no longer any need to remember a copy card or a pocket full of change and find a copy machine (for fair-use copying of course!) Better still, when I get back to the office, I can file the copies on disk, and thus accessible from anywhere, rather than in my filing cabinet. When I get a travel receipt, I no longer carry it for a week before losing it; I scan it, and turn in the scan for reembursement. When I receive reviews or other documents that I need to share with collaborators abroad, simply scan, save to .pdf format, and email. And doubtless there will be plenty of additional applications that will come to light as I get used to having my Capshare around.

The downside? The software. While it is not bad, I do wish that the included text recognition software (conversion from graphics format to actual text) was better, but this will doubtless improve in time. And I really wish that the software ran on Linux, but knowing the Linux community, it''s only a matter of time until something even better will.

I purchased one of these HP Capshare scanners as a closeout at $300, significantly less than the then current asking price of $900. I was very skeptical.

But YES... a very useful device. Contrary to what some reviewers claimed, I found this HP Capshare worth its high asking price, and very easy to use. It worked right out of the box, with my separately purchased Ricoh Magio sub-miniature laptop, which was a netbook, sold before the term "netbook" was coined. With the Capshare, I could scan text from bound books. My netbook would then volunteer to collect the scanned pages when the Capshare''s IR port was within range of the netbook''s IR port. Using Pagis Pro software (bundled with the Capshare), my netbook could then OCR, or convert the Capshare''s bitmapped images to ASCII text, with 98% accuracy. The text could then be passed on to my Palm Pilot through the Palm Pilot''s IR port. The three pieces of hardware were quite a technological team! (Along with Pagis Pro software.)

Of course, many complained that the Ricoh Magio was too difficult to use, because of its tiny keyboard. And the HP Capshare could not do a decent job at copying photos or even line drawings. It could only accurately copy black and white text. But the value of these devices was proven by the fact that I wore them out, unlike some other computer gear that was purchased and little used.

Has anyone found equivalent technology?

Or do I need to cobble up some improvised solution with a digital camera and additional software? If so... what software?

I have at least one to two of this model printer in the offices I work at because they are so reliable, and need minimal maintenence. All of mine are in health care settings, where records are key. Some are one two or three trays. The toner last for many sheets of printing (never counted, but I know I probably go more than 1000 sheets at least). The printer rarely jams (except when I used really cheap thin paper), and the secretaries love the sheet feed selection if having to use overhead paper for a letter. The quality of the print (i believe up to 1200dpi) is great for black and white. Highly recommended investment, quite likely one of the last printers your office will need.

I usually buy the expensive ultra-white laser paper for my Xerox color laser printer, but this time I figured I''d try a case of the Mohawk. It''s less expensive, and for the most part, it''s hard to notice the difference, although there are a few if you look closely. To my eye, the surface seems a bit less smooth than the top quality papers, and it''s clearly not as startlingly bright white. Still, for most uses, it''s more than good enough, and the price difference makes it a good buy. Most importantly, it feeds smoothly without jamming, and except for slightly less of that eye-popping whiteness, text and images come out looking quite good.

Definitely recommended as a lower-cost alternative to the ultra-high quality papers.

I was a little worried about the paper curling issue at first, but having used this printer for a while, it is not as bad as some people make it out to be. Yes, the paper is curled slightly when it first comes out, but if you set it aside on a flat surface and let it cool for a few seconds, the paper will flatten out by itself. I have seen other laser printers that do far worse curling.

Network setup is very easy, especially if you''re using Mac OS X Tiger or Panther. I was able to connect both with Bonjour/Rendezvous wirelessly via Linksys 802.11g router after installing drivers downloaded off Brother''s website. Also was able to connect a PC running Win XP, which required an extra step or two. After you''re connected, if you need to change any default printer settings, it''s all done through a web interface (both FireFox and Safari worked fine).

Overall print quality is noticeably better than any inkjet and as good, if not better than similar laser printers in this class. Even graphic printouts were much better than I had expected and is perfectly fine for non-photo quality jobs. There are settings for 300/600/1200 dpi, a toner saver feature, power saver timeout, print density, and paper type selector (someone mentioned that selecting "thin" paper type causes less curling). Various other advanced printer and networking settings, and emulation modes exist also.

Print speed is very good. It takes about 10 seconds from the time I click the Print button to when 1 page in 600dpi with a fair amount of of text is printed out, even having just awakened from sleep mode. No problems printing out MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat documents.

I''ve printed a couple hundred pages so far, and have not experienced any printer errors or paper jams. (The printer also keeps a tally on the number of jams and an error history of the last 10 errors.)

Firmware version on mine is 1.11.

Overall, I would highly recommend this printer for anyone looking to save money on inkjet cartridges and want a very good quality, speedy, easy-to-setup, compact, networkable B&W laser printer for their home or home office.

This is a great way to let all the computers in your house share one printer. In my house I have 5... my PC, my wife''s PC, a laptop each, and a low-end DIY box I use for playing with Linux.

The installation of this printer was really easy. I plugged it into one of the wired ports on our wireless router and had all the PCs in the house printing to it within 10 minutes. I not only got our Windows machines using it in minutes, when I recently did a test install of Linspire on my DIY box, Linux printed to it with no problem too.

The output quality is great and it warms up pretty quickly. The only "bad" part is when I''m at my desk upstairs (where the printer is), my wife is downstairs with her laptop, and she prints something. Having the printer start up and print without warning was sort of spooky and took a little getting used to.

But all in all, this is awesome. One printer serves the whole house, gives great-looking output, and was a snap to get working.

This makes my third Brother laser printer that I have owned over the years. All three printers continue to be operational despite heavy workloads that I put on them in my small business. In fact, the only reason I bought the 2070N was because I wanted the convenience of the built-in networking capabilities. When it comes to quality, Brother shined above all the others and continues to do so.

The 2070N is a 20ppm monochrome (black and white) laser that can hook right up to your existing network. There is an optional wireless adapter you can purchase if you don''t have a cabled network. One of the things that impressed me the most was how easy it was to get setup and running on the network. I had used HP printers years ago that were ''network ready'' only to spend hours trying to figure out how to get the rest of the computers in the house to see it. With Brother, it was a matter of "plug and play". I took it out of the box, hooked it up and it automatically was assigned an IP address and the included software saw the printer and setup the necessary drivers. It doesn''t get any easier than that!

There are a lot of features built into this printer that you wouldn''t expect to find on a consumer model. For instance, the printer has a web interface that you can use to administer and check the status of the printer. There is also a built-in FTP server so you can literally FTP your large documents over to be printed. Errors and such can be setup to be e-mailed to you automatically so that, for example, when you are running low on toner you can get an email alert before you run totally dry.

The printer warms up faster and from sleep mode to print usually takes less than 10 seconds. Though some of the earlier 2070N models apparently had a problem with heat and curling paper, it appears that Brother has fixed this as I have never had my paper curl -even during large print jobs.

Overall, you can''t go wrong with the 2070N. It''s a low-cost workhorse that will serve you well for your print jobs in both your home and small business environment.

Ok, I read reviews here, then went out and bought, so i figured I would give back...

I bought this because of the cheap price, good looks, lack of a "stick out" paper tray, and the network connectivity. I read the paper curling problem, and figured it wouldnt bother me, but its a pretty big thing. it must produce allot of heat, because not only does it curl the paper, but it also fuzes envelopes shut, and completley melts the window in the window envelopes.

I not going to take this thing back, it does have great qualities, like you can use a browser to modify the network settings (like a dsl router), it looks great, the printing speed is very nice, and the fuser is a nice 60 bucks, oh, and the fit and finnish are much nicer than any of the hp1000 series I have worked with, and being a network adminstrator, i have worked with a bunch, its just the curling, melting, and sealing of envelopes.

I looked for a home laser printer to co-exist with my hp ink jet. The brother HL2070 had more ram than an HP 1022 I was considering and was lower priced. The toner / drum cartridges are also lower cost. When the printer arrived I noticed the quality of assembly was better than the HP 1022 I saw in the local stores. The driver set up was extremely easy. The print speed is quick. Small or full sized text is extremely good. I really like the multiple operating system support. I run Mac OSX and some Mac OS 9 software.

If you want a photo printer go with the i950

If you want a great all-round printer go with the i850.

I owned both the i850 and i950, with the i850 first. The i850 is an great all-round printer printing fast text and photos. Using the Canon photo paper images look great, but simply lack the detail the i950 can provide with 6 inks and almost twice the nozzles and special photo inks. The extra nozzles not only make printing faster (at least for photos) but allow for more detail.

On a picture, printed from Photoshop 6.0, that contained lots of details and color, but specifically a tree with multi-colored (shades) of bark on the i850 the tree looked good with good detail, but on the i950 the tree came to life, was sharper, with more tree/bark detail and color variations becoming visible. There was no question, the i950 was better, noticably for photos.

On mixed media (web page with graphics) the i950 and i850 were the same, but for some reason, the i850 was noticably faster. You get a larger black-ink cartridge w/ the i850 presumably favoring its intended role as a excellent all-round printer.

If price is an issue, the i850 is the printer for you ... If photo quality is the most important, then the i950 is for you ... Can''t make up your mind? Go with the i950, the extra money is worth the results.

The i850 produces the best photo prints I''ve ever seen from an inkjet. I looked at the HP 7350 and a few from Epson because I''ve never owned a printer from any other manufacturer. When I started to read the reviews about this printer, I decided to check one out in person. I was immediately impressed by the quietness and speed -and WOW, the finished print -I couldn''t find any flaws. I thought my HP 970 printed great photos but the Canon blows it away. I''ll keep the HP because it still is a great all-around printer and I''ve only had it for a 2 yrs. Inkjet technology has made some great advances the past few years! I purchased this printer 2 months ago and have found the perfect home printer. The main reason I was in the market was the high cost of "color" inkjet cartridges that I went through like candy in my old Canon and HP printers. I did my research and I wanted a printer that had separate color tanks so that if I ran out of cyan ink I wouldn''t have to trash the whole cartride that most likely had plenty of yellow and magenta inks. The individual tanks are far cheaper to buy (at about ~$$$ each) than a new color cartridge (~$$$).

Now for performance. The output quality is fantastic. I have printed out over 40 photos on 4x6 glossy photo paper (I have used 3 different premium glossy brands with little, if any, discernable difference in sharpness or color fidelity. I work for a large major medical equipment manufacturer and we ditribute "low-end" printers for over $10,000 that you would not be able to tell the difference in quality with the naked eye given the same source input. The bottom line is that the photo print capability of this printer is nothing short of stunning. I am also more than happy with the general purpose color and document printing on standard high resolution paper contrary to a number of reviews (usually from editorial product reviewers) that I have seen elsewhere.

The speed of both photo and general purpose printing is nothing short of astounding. I couldn''t believe my eyes at the output speed of photo prints and general purpose documents. Documents came out nearly as fast as a laser printer I have at work. And the pinter is so darn quiet. Except for the normal "thunk" as the paper is fed into the machine, I can barely hear the printhead while it is in operation.

In short, if you are looking for a printer that is miserly on printing supplies that produces fabulous photo and general purpose output, then GET THIS MACHINE!

As everyone else has noted, this is a very good printer for the cost. The performance will probably be sufficient for all but the most particular users. I just printed out a 8.5"x11" borderless print and cannot find a flaw in it. And the print out was relatively quick: 2''30" for a 1.5MB file.

As noted by other reviewers, a cord to connect the printer to your computer is not included. I bought a Belkin F3U133-06 USB Device Cable (6 Feet) which has the square connector for the printer and the flat connector for the computer. The printer can also use a parallel port cable, but I have not tested this.

Installation was pretty simple and worked fine with my old (''97) Windows 98 desktop and my new Windows 2000 laptop. I''ve mostly used the Easy Photo-Print program to print images. It automatically makes the proper printer settings so you don''t have to worry about that.

Another nice feature is the Auto Power Setting available from the Maintenance tab. The printer can be setup to turn on when a document is printed to it and turn off after a certain period on inactivity.

Anyway, highly recommended.

I purchased the Canon i850 on recommendation from the Canon rep that I met in a store. Well......this is the best printer I have ever seen for [its price].

The colors are superb, and the B&W print looks like it came from a laser.

The set-up instructions are on a separate sheet, and worked the first time. I loaded the software on my mac, and printed within minutes. Photos printed on 4x6" glossy paper look like they came from a professional photo lab.

Word of warning. The image software that comes with the printer works a bit too well. When you first start it up, it finds ALL images in the folder you direct it to, and immediately displays them on the screen so you can choose which ones to print. It found a couple of images that, ahem, I did not want anyone else to see. Oh well, I guess they didn''t belong on my hard drive anyway?!?

All in all, an excellent printer and software combo. You will enjoy it too.

Just be prepared to have to return, refund, and look for another one if you need the wireless feature. I''ve been a loyal HP customer for more than 15 years, both as an individual and as by influencing corporate purchasing decisions, I am happy to say that Brother has finally gotten over their earlier quality and usability issues. See, in the mid-90s, Brother gave me and others a really bad taste in our mouths due to the issues with drivers, their buggy or non-existent software and just overall poor quality. HP was and is THE name in consumer and business printers. Epson was a good alternate, but there just wasn''t any others, so due to availability, I was an HP man.

Enter the Brother MFC, which was sleek, prints great quality and filled with useful features such as wifi / wireless connectivity and an interactive LCD screen and automatic duplexing (none of which is necessarily new or innovative except for the duplexing). The set-up was easy and full of wizards but the process takes a very long time, upwards of 30 minutes and in multiple separate wizards.

I like the quality and the features, and the cost can''t be beat either. For me, this is the printer on my desk as a worthy replacement for my faithful my Epson NX300.

***Note, I don''t have any information as to the TCO when inks are factored into the equation, which could swing my positive review into less favorable territory, but I do like that the ink cartridges are individual and actually show the liquid ink levels.***

We picked this up on special the other day and for the prices it''s hard to beat. As with other similar Brother models the biggest problem is the noise, the paper handling mechanism is very loud. The color is good but not great (somewhat light/washed on normal paper with normal settings compared to other inkjets I''ve used). Speed is acceptable, nowhere near as fast as listed (on normal print settings) but the business features more than make up for the few shortcomings. Wireless setup was a breeze and all functions (duplex scan and printing, emailing ect.) work as expected with all are Windows7 and Mac machines (though the Mac required installation of the software for any functions (even printing) whereas the Win7 machines did not). I would recommend this as a good basic office printer for occasional use but probably not as a heavy-duty printer or where high photo quality is needed in documents.

A nice looking, compact, and easy to use printer are the best things I can say about this product. It looks great on my desk with my Macs and works with iPad and other hand-held devices.

I used to have a Brother MCF-9840 CDW laser color all in one printer which was very good (lasted three years with heavy use) but the problem with it was that it was such a beast: it probably weighed as much as I do with paper and toner inside it, and was impossible to carry by yourself for most people. This Brother is basic ink jet though it does everything the old one does, just more slowly. It truly does make a huge racket when it prints and on the next iteration of this series that would be the number one thing I would tell Brother to improve. Sometimes you like to print things when you are on the phone and there is a need for less noisy printers. They could also improve the flimsiness of the paper tray and the ink printing quality, which is a little passé/faded. However, I print less things than I used to, which is why I chose this printer rather than getting another larger model (this is supposed to be one of the smallest in its category) but if I were to print a lot of volume again, I would probably need a laser. I bought this on sale, so it was relatively inexpensive and the replacement ink only seem to cost 20 -30% of what my prior toner cartridges cost with the bigger machine - a big advance in affordability.

Overall I really like Brother printers and I usually register them because they have good phone support which is helpful with an infrequent, yet confounding error message.

I will add that I could have had my older printer repaired, but to come out and service it would have been a minimum $90 for the visit (I couldn''t have easily lifted it into my car and taken it to the repair shop like would be possible with this one) and because of the price of printers, I decided it was probably just as economical to get a brand new one.

I plunked this printer on the bottom shelf of a piece of furniture in a handy location in our home, intending that we would be able to print and scan to/from it from all the computers in our house wirelessly. That all works wonderfully.

The print quality is outstanding. I have done conventional, quick mode, b&w, and color printing and it is all very very good. I have also done full-color 8x10 photos on glossy photo paper, and this printer does an excellent job. Previously, I had an HP Deskjet 5650, which still works and works well. But the print quality on this Brother beats it.

Why only 4 stars? Because setting it up was tedious, and bear in mind, I''m a professional software developer. The instruction book does not include "all" the instructions, and frequency refers you to sections of an electronic manual included on a CD with the printer. That''s annoying and bad form. And this is not a case where the paper manual is a beginner "quick guide" and the advanced manual is on the CD. No. There were things about setting up the wireless network connection to this printer that were impossible without reading BOTH.

The diagrams and button labeling in the manual, and on the front panel of the printer itself,

were confusing. Sometimes, they seemed to be referring to a button, but the panel has an indicator light with exactly the same name in a completely different place, and the manual doesn''t always show WHERE these controls or buttons are. Sometimes, they are actual buttons on the panel, other times, they are selectable items on the menus that display on the little touch screen that is part of the front panel interface.

Anyway, yes, I eventually figured it all out, and it prints and scans great, but the instructions really need work.

I have no idea how the ink life will be. I haven''t owned it long enough to know.

It took my husband about 45 minutes from opening the box, through setup and software to have this printer operational, including use by all computers in our home network. We are home users and mainly interested in quality black and white text printing as well as family pictures. For regular printing and color pictures, the Brother Printer MFCJ4410DW produces excellent results, very comparable to other printers we have used.

There are two "worst" features. First, the lid will not stay up at a 45-degree angle; it must be completely extended to stay open. This is a problem because we have the printer on a credenza which is under a counter overhang, meaning we have to manually hold the lid open. The second issue to note is that in a power outage, and notwithstanding having the printer on a surge protector, the printer froze. We finally figured out that the driver was corrupted due to the power loss, meaning that the software had to be reloaded, which takes about 10 minutes. We did this as a last resort because the error messages were not helpful, and neither was the Brother online technical support.

There are a number of "best" features, in addition to the print quality. First and foremost, is the speed of this computer; by far it is the fastest printer we have ever had, even for printing pictures. The touch screen is very user friendly and a real asset. The scanner works in both black and white and color, and it produces great copies.

The printer came with starter ink cartridges, which are necessary according to Brother because the first time you install the ink cartridges the machine will use extra ink to fill the ink delivery tubes, although this is a one-time process that enables the machine to carry out high quality printing. The starter ink has a greater volume than the ink cartridges sold separately for this reason. Replacement cartridges are obviously an issue with any printer. Certainly, they can be purchased on the Brother website at a premium price. Alternatively, we will be able to get all four replacements at either 4inkjets or LD Products for around $70 with free shipping plus tax for high yield (600 copies) or about $100 with free shipping plus tax for super high yield (1,200 copies).

This printer has a limited two-year warranty and toll-free technical support for the life of the machine. Only very rarely will we ever use the fax; however, the review will be updated once we have experience with this feature, as well as for how the starter and replacement cartridges perform and any interactions we have with customer service.

December 23 update: We tried three more features. The double-sided printing is easy and 100 percent automatic, and prints from an iphone or ipad are are breeze.

I always bought the cheap staples brand paper before, but seeing as this was pretty cheap I thought I''d go for it. It comes in a brown box with the reams well packaged. Some of the covers on the reams were damaged, but the paper inside was fine.

I have printed lots of things on it, and they look very good. The paper holds up even when you print double sided, in fact there is almost no color bleed through, as in you won''t see shadows of the color on the other side of the page.

When you get it, remember that this thing weighs about 60 pounds, I had lots of fun carrying it from my mail services building back home.

All in all, it was an excellent purchase, cheap and very high quality, and of course Amazon sent it very quickly via Prime!

This is an excellent high-quality paper at a great price. HOWEVER when they ship it they just toss individual reams of paper into a bigger box. So during shipping the packages bounce around, and needless to say some of them split open. The big box was sturdy, but some amount of the paper was damaged (and the blue wrapper ink rubs off on the paper as well.) I could use 95% of the paper so I didn''t bother complaining or asking to ship it back. But depending on what happens during shipment, the damage could have been more extensive. What they ought to do is ship a CARTON of paper in its original box as shown in the product illustration, and then place that full carton inside the sturdy outer shipping box.

So it''s 5 stars for the paper and 1 star for the shipping, giving a 3 star rating.

My carton arrived in shambles, and instead of the normal heavy duty plastic reinforcements to secure the box, it only had clear packaging tape! 8 out of 10 reams were damaged dented or dirty (blue stains from packaging or black from the dirt accumulated during shipping). The lid to my box was broken and one side of it was torn off. Buyer beware! Most of the products in this category is shipped in a unsafe manner. I was skeptical of Brother printers, but after having a miserable experience with HP trying to get a 6380 to work (two broken units delivered; two units returned; 4 hours on phone with tech support), I broadened my search and found consistently good reviews of this printer. I live in a mixed household (Windows and Mac), which also eliminated many competitors. Finding it on sale tipped the scales.

Out of the box, the printer is compact, has a low profile, and is a bit sleeker looking than the competitors. Overall workmanship is solid.

Only exception is the paper tray which feels a bit flimsy, but nothing that would deter me. There is also no easy way to feed envelopes or letterhead without pulling out the papertray -and to run envelopes, you need to remove regular paper since the bypass tray is only for photo paper.

Fax machine is a nice feature to have and, thankfully, it does not come with a phone handset attachment which would just take up space for no reason.

Per the manual, the printer can NOT handle both wireless and wired USB/network connection at the same time. Not a problem for me at all as the unit will only be used via wireless.

It is energy star rated and defaults to putting itself to sleep after a period of non-use. Startup out of sleep is very fast when you send a wireless document. I tend to unplug my power strip when I won''t be using the computer for a while and was afraid that the settings would wipe, but when I plugged it back in the printer sprang back to life with all wireless configurations intact.

Set up was pretty simple. Following the quick start instructions went fine. Found my wireless router, connected, printed test page, no problem. Installed drivers/software on Windows XP, and it looks to be a lot less heavy than HP''s full software. Only wrinkle in installation is that it asked me several times to connect/verify the wireless connection (each piece of software plus the hardware basically asked me the same thing a few times... I probably didn''t need to enter it so many times, but it wasn''t difficult so I decided to be safe). No problems with Mac install either. Very simple.

Overall, the set up was easy and quick. Brother could learn a bit from HP in terms of integrating the documentation and the printer set up a little bit better, but that''s a minor issue. It was easy and the thing worked right away.

Automatic document feeder on top of the machine is a great feature to have in a printer at this level, and it works well.

The wireless integration is well done. I was able to print wirelessly immediately, and, quite a pleasant surprise to find that the "scan" feature actually worked as advertised.

Scanning was as simple as dropping a document into the feeder, hitting scan, selecting which of my two wireless PCs I wanted to receive the doc, and then hitting start. Seamlessly scanned and dropped the PDF onto my hard drive.

Ditto for requesting an OCR of the paper document. OCR quality is pretty amazing. I haven''t had experience with desktop/consumer OCR in a few years, so maybe they are all of similar quality now, but I was pleasantly surprised. No formatting came over, but I was able to take a memo sitting on my desk and scan/OCR it in a few seconds. The text dropped into a plain text file and had no errors in text recognition or punctuation.

Print speed appears to be slower than the box claims. I haven''t tested it, but it feels slower than a lower quality HP deskjet it replaced. Could be a function of the wireless throughput. I''m not terribly concerned since this is for a low-volume home setup. Print quality is good, not fantastic (I will play with settings and see if I can''t improve that). Photo prints onto plain paper are not as clear as HP.

I am also very happy with the low noise level. The printer is quiet (much more so than my prior HP inkjet) and it doesn''t rattle and shake and rumble like my prior HP inkjet.

If you''re having trouble getting the photo paper bypass to work, I had to resort to the manual. You need to physically move the bypass tray forward and lock it into place -there is no software setting or configuration switch in the print properties. (You can select paper type and all the normal options there, but not the bypass.) Then when done, you pull the paper tray out and physically move the bypass tray back into standby position. At first I was annoyed, but given the frequency of printing via the bypass, I don''t care. And I figure not having two paper paths probably means less chance of paper jams.

The model higher than this one is essentially the exact same unit but with a phone handset and a built in digital answering machine. I didn''t think that was worth an extra $50, but if you need an answering machine it might be worth it to save footprint.

So far so good. I highly recommend this printer. For the price, features, ease of set up, size, and quiet, it is a very good deal.

I had tried the HP 6380 which had (to me) slightly better print quality, but lacked the automatic document feeder fax and the very well integrated wireless software. I also was unable to get multiple of them to work -fatal errors on hardware, plus bad customer support, so I gave up and went to this unit... glad I did. I saved money and got a printer better suited for me.

I will update this review in a few weeks if I have any issues with reliability.

[EDIT: 02/28/2012: Brother continues to support this printer well. Recent driver for the iPad work perfectly, allowing me to print web pages via wireless and even to scan documents directly to the iPad. Prior version only allowed printing of images, which was limited in usefulness. Latest update means I can print boarding passes, directions/maps, etc. without having to boot up a PC. Only downside remains ink cartridge life, but there are a ton of generic brand suppliers with prices so low that it doesn''t bother me any more given the low volume I print.]

I''ve only had this for about 2 weeks but so far I love it.

I cannot say how durable or reliable it will be but here''s what I can say:

1) it worked great right out of the box and was not difficult to hook up

2) it prints much faster than my Canon Pixma

3) the scanning software is easier to use than my Canon Pixma

4) it has a fax which again worked the first time, very easy

5) it SEEMS to use less ink than the Canon or the Epson I had before that (you do have to buy 4 ink cartridges not just one, but you can buy only the one you need, you don''t have to buy all at once)

6) You can turn it off and when you call for it by clicking PRINT on a document or photo, it turns itself on very nice! (and it comes on quickly)

This may or may not be a downside: the manual is very thick and there are lots of options. I haven''t even felt like going through them all and I figure I may never do so unless I need something to work a certain way that does not, as it is, out of the box. I did have to set a few things on the menu, like turning off the ringer of the fax, but that was easy.

My ONE complaint is that the scan screen is smaller than the pixma, so if you have a document or picture larger than about 11x14 (not sure the exact size see the specs) then it won''t work for you. The Pixma had a larger screen.

All in all, if this thing gives me 2 years of good service I will be satisfied.

So far, I would give it a hearty recommendation.

Just bought the Brother MFC-490cw to replace my dead Lexmark X83. Simply stated, this is an awesome all-in-one printer! Setup was quick and easy. The printer found my wireless router in seconds. Loaded the proper drivers in the various laptops and BAM! we were printing without wires!

The print quality for both text and color images is very good. the 3.3" color screen is a very nice feature. Having true CMYK print cartridges (meaning 4 different cartridges) means you only have to replace the color that is empty. It also has slots for memory cards and flash drives so that you can fax/scan straight to those when you don''t have a PC handy. All things considered, I couldn''t be happier with this printer. At $79.99 it was a steal of a deal!! Wi-Fi printing, the only way to print!!!!

Update: We''ve used this printer quite a bit since we purchased it, both for my daughter''s many high school homework, reports, photos, etc., and for my writing and editing work. This printer is AMAZING. It takes every wireless job with ease and speed. It prints edge to edge if needed, and it''s use of the CMYK print cartridges is excellent. I liked many things about this unit, but unfortunately, I can only give it two stars (I would give it 2.5 if possible).

The manual says you must use up an ink cartridge within 6 months of installation

The printer has nice features and is easy to set up. If you want an inexpensive wireless multifunction, it is a great device. But if you are wanting a high quality print, it''s probably not the printer for you. The print looks washed-out and the color is inaccurate. I did notice that if you set the quality to "Fine", the text is more pleasing; however, I suspect that much more ink is used. In short, its features are comparable to or better than the competitors, but the print quality relatively poor.

I bought my MFC-490CW yesterday and in the 24 hours that I have owned it I have just one thing to say WOW!

I like this printer so much that I felt that I needed to review it right away and here is why: (my review is based on over 15 years of owning various printers, scanners and fax machines)

1. The Setup:

Setup was even easier than most wired printers that I have had:

The hardest part of the setup was unpacking and getting all the tap and locks of the printers. After that, I pretty much was able to get everything setup by not even having to take a look at the manual (I did use the quick setup manual).

Once the printer was setup and hooked to my wireless network, I installed the drivers that were on the CD on my computers and the setup did all the parts of finding the printer, installing it, that I was amazed that by the end of the installation I had a working printer setup.

I have one computer that is wired to the wireless router and 2 laptops that access the network using wireless connectivity. The printer accesses the network through wireless connectivity too.

2 machines on the network run Windows XP and installation was eventless on them. On my Vista laptop, the setup ran into some problem and just kept waiting for a long time. I just shutdown the installation process, restarted the computer and then restarted the installer this time around the installation went off successfully.

I am amazed at how hands off the installation from each computer is: Normally after the drivers are installed you need to find the printer, etc, etc.... With the MFC 490, you run the installer and you are done... You are ready to print/scan/fax right after that.

2. The features:

This is probably the most feature rich printer that I have seen in a $100 multi-function printer.

* You can scan from any computer on the network.

* You can scan from the printer and have it send the image to any computer you like.

* The automatic paper feeder works!

* You can not only send and receive faxes on the device, but also do it from any of the computers on the network.

* the Paper port software provided does a great job of the OCR

* I love the integrated paper feeder for printing no ugly stack of papers sticking out of the printer.

* It is fast I was worried that being connected over the wireless network printing and especially scanning would be slow.... but it felt just as fast as when I used to be connected to my old printers using a USB cable.

* With all these features it is like having a separate printer connected directly to each computer on your network.

3: Print quality:

No complaints it is a $100 printer I am not expecting shop quality print outs, yet the quality of photos was good and I could not find anything to complain about.

Also the ink is pretty cheap $10 for color cartridges and $15 for the black ink. (I found after market cartridges for even cheaper but wouldnt risk those).

4: Scan quality:

Scanning was easy and every computer accesses the scanner just as though it were directly connected to it. You can specify scan settings (resolution, quality, size and area to be scanned) from your computer.

Scan quality of photos was good.

Scan quality of documents was good and the OCR I did of a printer letter was good and had an accuracy of about 95%.

5: Looks:

The printer has a low form factor so it blends nicely with the office. With no papers sticking out it looks very aesthetically pleasing.

I would recommend this device to anybody who is looking to buy a new printer any time soon. It is a solid printer, with great features and best of all it is cheap. It certainly is worth $200 for what it gives you in features and ease of use. You can get it for $100 to $130 in most stores.
