Brady BMP21 Label Printer

Brady BMP21 Label Printer
  • Portable label printer is a labeling tool for identifying a variety of items, like cables, file folders, and equipment
  • Single-color printing on label materials such as continuous tape, vinyl film, wire marker sleeves, self-laminating media, and nylon cloth
  • Thermal transfer printing stays crisp and bright longer than direct thermal printing
  • Easy-to-load cartridges and automatic label formatting for convenience
  • Prints on label materials used in harsh environments such as extreme temperatures and curved or highly-textured surfaces (labels sold separately)

My primary use for a label printer is to mark wires in industrial electrical cabinets. I need the type of label where the text is printed repeatedly perpendicular to the label direction, then wrapped around the wire. (NOT the "flag" type where the label is just folded in half over the wire.) This type of application requires the nylon cloth tape, which is available for most brands of label makers.

I had previously used a Brady IDpal, which had some advantages but was not very reliable. After comparing and reading reviews for the Rhino 5200 and Brother P-touch units, I decided to purchase the Rhino 5200. In short, I was disappointed in the wire wrap capability of the Rhino and ended up returning it. The literature claimed that it would print labels for wires as small as 22awg (which I often use), but I came to find out that the shortest wire wrap label it will print is 1-1/4" long. Why on earth would you need 1-1/4" of label to wrap around a wire only 1/16" in diameter? For the short time I had it, I ended up trimming and wasting more label tape than I actually used.

Enter the Brady BMP21. The shortest wire wrap label it will print is 3/4", which still can be longer than necessary for tiny wires, but it''s way better than the waste from the Rhino. Plus, the label cartridges are cheaper than Rhino and you can get 3/8" tape (Rhino only goes down to 1/2"). I haven''t used many functions yet other than the wire wrap labels, but it seems like a rugged unit and I''m sure it will serve my purpose. The backlight is a nice touch. If you need wire wrap labels, the BMP21 would be my recommendation.

UPDATE 7/28/2011:

After using this labeler for almost a year, it has served my purpose well. The label cartridges are fairly inexpensive and even cheaper on eBay. My only complaint is that it seems to drain batteries fairly quickly, even when not in use. I''ve gotten into the habit of removing one of the batteries before putting it away, to minimize this problem. I''d suggest investing in the AC adapter if you purchase this unit.

Buy Brady BMP21 Label Printer Now

Have had the BMP21 for a year and a half now, and used it on several projects. I use the nylon cloth labels for wire labeling, DIN terminal blocks, and larger labels on equipment front panels. The label backing is limp, and the mastic aggressive, so that the wire labels stay wrapped on, so far without problems. The printer will do heat shrink sleeves, but I haven''t felt the need for such permanence. I find that it works just fine on alkaline AA batteries, and doesn''t drain them when not in use, as one reviewer stated. Maybe his is defective or is using rechargeable cells, which discharge eventually whether used or not.

One problem has irritated me though. When printing numbers for 5mm wide DIN terminal blocks, it will print serialized numbers, for instance, 10 labels 1-10 starting with 1, with one press of the start button without stopping, and the numbers get spaced on 5mm pitch. If asked to print 10 of the same number (serialize OFF) for terminals joined by a shorting bar, it stops after each one and forces me to press the Print button for each numeral. This screws up the 5mm spacing of the labels making it more like 7mm, which forces me to cut them apart and apply them individually. This is a firmware defect. If they can have it generate ten numbers in a FOR loop, incrementing each time, and print them without stopping, all they have to do is switch off the incrementing function in the same loop to make this work right. I just checked to see if there''s been a firmware upgrade, but so far no. I guess this would have to be a ROM change, since there''s no I/O port, but I would be willing to ship it in to get this fixed, or install myself.

That being said, using this labeler is still WAY better than the old rolls of individual preprinted numbers, or hand lettering. I''m getting really good with the razor knife.

Nice labeler, many different label types to use for different enviroments. I use this to label Infant bottles and then subject them to the microwave for sanitation and the labels stay on for a long time. I also use this in industry as an OEM to label wires and cables and they hold up very well. As I said there are several different types of label material, be certain to choose the correct material for your application.

Brady makes quality printers. We have 3 electricians that use the Brady 21 day in and day out for industrial wiring. They hold up well and compared to other brands you can''t beat the price.

Favorite least used tool. Its not so much the printer, but the labels and brady has some of the best. The labels never fall off even when exposed to back of rack server heat. Highly recommend Get the charger as it eats though batteries.

ASIN B000AYH7X4 Like almost all ink cartridges out there, it''s overpriced. Unfortunately, since they''re all overpriced, I can''t really take away a star for that.

It''s ink. It works, it runs out eventually, it''s kind of hard to say much about an ink cartridge. Haven''t yet had one clog up, but I do recommend storing in a plastic baggie if you won''t be using it for a while.

On the very upside, and earning this cartridge (and any other from Canon) a big gold star from me Canon runs a cartridge recycling program, with boxes available upon request from their website. I''m so impressed by the environmentally aware gesture that I''ll stick with Canon as long as I can!

I have a Canon photo printer, Canon PIXMA iP6220D Photo Printer, that uses this ink, Canon CL-52 Photo Ink Cartridge and I''ve gone through a full cartridge now, and I''ve had no issues with the ink, or the printer. I print photo''s on this, and a few DVD labels from time to time. The ink dries fast, does not smear, and looks like it came from the local photo processing places.

Documents looked great, happy with purchase.

I would order this paper, It is great for just about everything! It is great for fountain pen writing, excellent for printing off anything. It really sets an impression that counts when you write a letter regardless if by hand or typed out on a computer. I used it for everything, school, personal, business. Once you get used to a good product you will feel anything else is inferior

I was looking for a new ream of paper to last me though the year for school and various projects. I was looking for a Bright White paper that would exceed 97 brightness that I could use for presentations. Well during my search, Amazon recommended the Southworth 13C 100% Cotton Business Paper. It immediately caught my attention since I''m studying photography and wood pulp is a big no no in the art world, and the words "100% Cotton", Lignin Free" and "Acid Free" are a huge YES! I went to the Southworth website to read more on their process and quality, and then decided to buy a ream. Once it was delivered, I opened it up and felt the paper and checked the watermark. I then printed a cover page for my portfolio and compared my previous paper to this paper. I was astounded at the level of detail this paper was able to produce. The blacks were "Black", not washed out black, not grey, but Black! Just that alone shows that this paper will be able to produce true rich colors without a washed out look. I can also use this paper for many other things like covering my photographs for storage so the paper will take the elements, and not my work. I can also use this for model release forms so that they last longer and give the client a feel of prestigeness.

Very happy with the Victor 1460-4 calculator. Tried cheaper calculators for my business but they sounded so loud and cheap. This has a quieter printer than most and just has a good feel to it. Does more stuff than I''ll ever need. On other, cheaper calculators, the printing on the tape started too far down in the calculator, you had to be right up against it to see the last number printed. This is a little better. Bought because my accountant had another model by Victor and recommended a Victor.

I share an office with the bookkeeper and she requested a full-size calculator with paper feed, etc. Somehow being the tech person I''m the person people go to if they want to purchase anything remotely technical for the office. So, I set out looking for a nice calculator that was quiet and could withstand heavy "abuse." While I was quite surprised by it''s sized, our bookkeeper loves it and I love it because it is much quieter than any similar calculator. I would definitely recommend it.

I had to give it a star it would like let me go forward without it. I did not ge the Hp cartridge as shown. I got a generic cartridge that did not fit although advertised for Deskjet 1000 series. To return they want me to pay for return shipping when it''s their fault. I will never purchase anything from this retailer again. I can''t print the return label since I don''t have ink.

I bought two of these HP 41 cartridges from a supplier in TX who claims to be heavenly. They were supposed to be in retail packaging. They were not. they were in generic white sleeves, the sort that are inside the real retail packaging. Then each cartridge was different, but both were obviously re-mans. This might be what you would expect at this price, but not how the item was described.

The real problem was neither one worked. One had dried up yellow and cyan ink. Only the magenta worked. The other caused a printer error message.I sent them both back for a refund.

Bottom line is these are high capacity cartridges by today''s standards, which is good because they last a long time. But it is bad because the ink dries up before you use it up unless you do regular cleaning cycles.... which uses a lot of ink! A Catch-22.

If you try to inventory your own spares the will just dry up before you use them. So you have to buy them when you need them. But the suppliers have the same shelf-life problem too! So try to buy from someone who has a lot of turnover and an easy return policy, and try to avoid overstock/outdated product if you can identify it as such.

When you finally get lucky and get a good HP 41 cartidge create your own maintenance page with just a few lines of yellow, cyan, magenta, and black. Use "MS-Paint" or make a simple document using color fonts in "MS-WORD" or something along those lines. Then print it weekly to keep the nozzles cleaned out.

My school owns two of these and they have worked quite well. We run an NT network and have 2 labs with about 50 computers in each. The computers in the lab print to these, and because we run a network and the printer can two, every classroom and can print to the lab printers. The printer is very versatile with 2 or 3 automatic bays for paper and 2 manual entry paper bays for large papers or envelopes and such. It prints extremely fast, but takes about 5 minutes to warm up in the morning, or 2 minutes to warm up if it hasn''t been used in a couple hours. It rarely has problems, and when it does it is usually the kids'' fault. It has worked extremely well for our school and has had only a few minor problems.

I only buy Epson ink for my Epson Workforce 600 printer, as I have for all of the five Epson printers which I have had over the years. I have never had any problems with Epson ink.

But buying directly from Epson is expensive, especially since I live in Alaska and Epson thinks that Alaska is the edge of world and charges outrageous shipping costs to ship to here. The price at Amazon.com is discounted 40% and the shipping is free. Who can beat a deal like that? It is even cheaper than buying locally for me.

I always wish that cartridges lasted longer, but I think it is how the printer companies make their money --not with the sale of the printer, but with all of the ink that you have to buy. I also wish that Epson cartridges were refillable.

I do think that the high capacity cartridges are worth the higher price.

Epson has constructed their printers so that they will not work at all after the printer memory decides that the ink is low. Who knows how many pages could be printed until the cartridge is actually empty. The Epson ink works well. No problems with an inoperable cartridge so far. Ink flow starts easily and dries quickly without smudging. However, it seems to me that there is not much ink in the cartridge as compared to my old HP printer cartridges. I am buying the "68" size since the smaller "69" doesn''t last long enough to even be worth considering. My advice is to buy the HP printer, but if you already have the Epson you are stuck. The positive side is the cartridge works very well and you will be changing them frequently (which is very easy to do).

I have had my Epson multi-task printer/scanner for several years now and it works fine. The catch is that the printer will not work unless you have four ink cartridges in it -black, plus the three colors you need for full-color printing. The cartridges are outrageously expensive, wherever you buy them, and even if you want to print only in black, the printer requires you to buy and install all four colors before it will work. And the cartridges really don''t last so long. So while buying the printer was a good deal, I have over the years spent many times more than that for the cartridges.

HP Officejet 4315 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (Q8081A#ABA)

HP Officejet 4315 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier
  • Robust and affordable all-in-one printer, fax, scanner, and copier
  • Crisp and clear 1,200 dpi black and white print quality; 4,800x1,200 dpi full-color print quality
  • Copies up to 20 pages per minute
  • Windows and Mac compatible
  • 1-year limited manufacturer''s warranty

I bought the 4315 about one month ago, primarily because it has a sheet-fed scanner. I have scanned 200+ pages and have not had one problem. The software is very easy to use. I set the software to scan documents as "searchable PDFs." Also, it is much faster to scan documents with the 4315 than my flatbed scanner.

I also printed a few brochures using the color printer, and the quality was great.

I would highly recommend the 4315.

****************************************

Here is a 2008 update to my 2006 review: Since then, I have been using the 4315 regularly and have not any problems. In fact, it has worked perfectly. I primarily have used it for scanning. Using the settings of black and white, PDF, and 300 dpi, I have scanned in hundreds of documents --which converted to more than 1 gigabyte of PDFs.

One of the great things about the 4315 is that it is a sheet-fed scanner, so I can put in several pieces of paper, and they automatically feed in one at a time.

The software is very easy to use. In preview mode, you can preview your scans and modify them via a variety of options including "resize," "sharpen," and "B/W threshold."

Also you can add additional pages to a scan. So for example, to convert a 60-page document to a pdf, you would place several pages in the autofeeder and scan them, and then select "Scan Additional Pages" and repeat this process--until you have scanned all 60 pages.

The quality of printing is quite good even for very small fonts such as subscript. I do not use it to fax because I simply scan in documents and then use XP''s fax utility or faxaway''s service.

First let me say I''ve owned many multifunction units over the years. I''ve paid 3 4 times the price of this unit and have not been as satisfied as I am with the 4315.

I mainly use this unit for copies and faxing. I make approx 200 flyers on it a week not to mention daily faxes. It has never let me down. The print is clear and crisp. I paid 89.00 for it and couldn''t ask for anything more for the money. There are many improvements over the 4215. It''s very easy to set up and use.

Love it!

If you''re looking for a machine that will let you fax, copy, print from your computer and scan, here is the machine for you! It''s small, takes up little space AND if you''re using it home for occasional use, you can fold up the top and bottom to take up even less room!

It''s very user friendly and I''d say it took me longer to open the box and unpack it than it did to set it up and get it running!

What''s very cools is that the machine aligns up the printing by itself. Put a paper through once, it prints on it then you put that SAME paper through again face down and it aligns up ALL by itself!

The only thing I''d give a warning for is to make sure you by a USB cable (not included) AND buy a black HP #21 and color HP #22 ink cartridge extra as even through they''re included they''re "test" cartridges and there is VERY little ink in them. And if you will be using it for photos you need to buy the Photo Ink HP (this is not included even in test ink).

Otherwise it''s a great user friendly machine!

Plus if you buy through AMazon (not a 3rd party seller) you pay less, no sales tax and free shipping! You can''t go wrong!

Want HP Officejet 4315 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (Q8081A#ABA) Discount?

I work in an investment firm .Everyone in the office received a new HP 4315, approx 3 months ago. Well we had canon units before and these blow them away. For ease of use and dependability these win hands down. I have never had a paper jam or a fax lost yet. They work as advertised and better, and we put them through the ropes.

A very well made multi task printer.

I have never owned a printer that I was overly impressed with until NOW! I got sick of paying hundreds of dollars for multifunction printers that were difficult to use and set up. So for this go around I decided to keep my budget under $100 dollars and I read many reviews and decided to take a chance on this printer. Boy am I glad I did. The set up on this was so easy. I was literally printing and faxing in minutes. I haven''t used the scan mode yet but I''m sure that is as easy to use. I have DSL and even with that complicating factor I was able to set up this printer/fax/scanner and believe me I''m very technology phobic. The printer speed and quality are great and its not an ink guzzler at all. I"m thrilled with this purchase. I''ve never written a review before but this product is too fantastic not to rave over!

Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer

Canon D340 Digital Copier Laser Printer
  • Up to 15 copies per minute letter, 12.5 cpm legal; and 15 ppm printing
  • 50 to 200 percent reduction/enlargement in 1-percent increments
  • 250-sheet paper cassette, 50-sheet automatic document feeder
  • Simple, single-cartridge system; fast 1-second warmup time
  • USB interface; PC compatible

I selected this copier/printer based on price, features and the Canon name. I felt like I got "Oh such a deal" at the time I bought mine in Sept.08. It was painless to set up: install the software; plug in the USB cable (not provided) when prompted and click and Voila! I set it up as a shared printer and it is now the main printer in our 4 PC home network.

Its quick

Makes clear, clean copies

Not as quiet as some when printing but definitely not loud

Top sheet feeder works well, even for multiple sheets

Toner cartridge was a breeze to install

Enters and exits its "sleep" mode flawlessly, even from another PC on the network

Comes with a FULL TONER CARTRIDGE, not a starter. For those who do not know about this: many new printers, especially when being sold at LOW prices, are sold with a toner cartridge that''s only good for a few hundred copies at most. Just enough to get you started on day one and to give you time to go buy a "real" toner cartridge. This is often how the mfg''s will move more units, by selling them at super-low prices knowing they will make their profits on you returning for toner.

With the rebate I couldn''t pass this up, although if I were paying full retail I would have chosen one that also scans to the PC. This one DOES NOT. It is only a printer and copier. I would also consider one that has a Print server and NIC built-in IF I could also connect directly for scanning.

I would recommend this printer.

When I first got this machine, I was ready to give it 5 stars. It set up easily and made fast, great quality copies. I noticed a couple of glitches but thought them minor. But after a few days I have discovered shortcomings of the unit, hence the 4-stars. I was considering 3 but figure that''s too low since it does basic things well. It is a multi-purpose machine, but not all-purpose.

Pros:

* Excellent quality printing and copies

* Scan-once-print-many I think describes how the machine copies scans a document once and prints as many copies as you order. Good feature!

* Fast (compared to my old HP LJ5P)

* Simple toner cart loading

* Allows straight-through printing for heavy stock you don''t want to curl

* Fairly easy manual paper feed, but with a shut-down quirk (see below)

* Standby mode nice to save energy

* Good price after rebate

Cons:

* It''s not a computer-linked scanner as I thought. Looks like one, isn''t.

* Paper handling is less than stellar. Paper cartridge falls out if not handled exactly correctly, but paper doesn''t come out with it, spilling all over the floor (reminds me of the card game 52 Pickup). The cartridge actually is only half a cartridge -open at the end inside the printer, not anchored well, feels flimsy. Paper tray on my old HP 5P is years better than this one.

* Machine locks up if you feed an odd-size sheet through the manual paper feed. No way to reset it except unplug. So it prints only one odd-size sheet at a time. Print one, unplug, print another, unplug.... I''m used to a button that clears errors and resets. None on this printer. You can pre-set paper size to avoid the lockup, but sometimes I have one smaller sheet to print for which the unit does not have a setting.

* Kind of big, both footprint and height, but that may not be a problem for you.

The large block of "Cons" makes this look more negative than I feel it should, but those are the negatives I find. If you don''t need a machine than scans to the computer, and if you can handle the quirky paper-feed requirements, it''s great. At the price, if it were used just as a copier for a small office it would be well worth the price.

I got this having read the other reviews and being relatively new to the land of buying printer/copiers. I''m not sure why this copier was so well reviewed.

I am disappointed with this purchase because. . .

-16pp/m is snail''s pace by 2009 standards (wish I''d done that research first).

-The surface glass is tiny and isn''t good for anything larger than regular paper size. i.e.) try to photocopy any except small books and you can barely do two pages at a time

-it won''t work with Mac at all ever (called Canon)

-return policy for some of these shippers is nonexistent (check first)

The main attraction to this copier is the net price considering the product abilities. The Canon D340 copier replaced a Canon PC920, which did a yeoman job througout its life. The new copier adds an auto-feed feature which is very handy, and works well. Other than that, the scanning area is miniscule compared to the PC920, making copying from a book next to impossible. The D340 weighs about one half of the PC920, which may reflect the quality and longevity of the new model.

The main problem is that with the $ Rebate that was offered, it was a good deal. The terms and conditions were a little stringent, and were carefully carried out, and to no avail. Although we documented the rebate terms, have photocopies of everything sent, Canon appears to have had no intention of sending the rebate. We received a form letter saying the rebate was not honored because "UPC lable is missing". This is not true, as we have photo copies of the original cut from the carton. We intend to pursue this through Amazon, the seller, and AMEX, the credit card company. In the meantime, when dealing with CANON, let the buyer beware.

After years of using high quality fast paced business copiers, our business shrunk down to the point that we no longer needed an expensive fast copier, just one that did the job. When we read the reviews on this copier we were hoping that this one would provide the same quality copies as the large business copiers. We are not disappointed. The quality is right up there with the big guys! Of course it doesn''t make copies as fast but it does make good copies and it is easy to set up to your computer server and generate copies through your network!
