This laser printer is the best value for its performance and output. I had a LaserJet 6P which is a dinosaur now, still works perfect but doesn''t understand PostScript3. I got tired of printing Japanese text by first having to make a pdf and then print. Now I can print directly to the printer. The text is near perfect on a scale of 1-5, i''d say 4.5. Unless you are going to buy a $600 Ricoh, you should really consider this printer solely based on its speed and text output. Even compared to other $300 models, this printer can hold its own and may even be better in some cases. It is kind of noisy when it printsa deep whirring noise it''s bearable but should be mentioned. The manual feed can only hold a thin amount which could be a problem for some people who are going to be printing onto a lot of envelopes. And unfortunately you can''t load envelopes into the main compartment. Also the actual printing of envelopes can be annoying, you have to press the button on the printer before it prints any envelopes and you have to do it for each single one there might be a way around this but I haven''t figured it out yet.

The USB issue:

yes, HP tech support can be frustrating as with any company. But my experience wasn''t as horrible as others here have had. I received two follow up phone calls, even one from an HP technical engineer about this usb issue::

through trial & error, here is what I did to make it work:

If you are having problems connecting the USB printer to your computer, i.e. WinXP won''t recognize the printer, you need to disable the USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller. For some reason, on some computers running WinXP, the USB printer port is recognized as an "Unknown Device." It affects any USB port, doesn''t matter if it''s USB 2.0 w/Firewire or an older port. It can be fixed easily with a little tweak. I''m sure a lot of people have returned the printer b/c they thought they couldn''t print or it was incompatible. Not everything works perfectly straight out of the box, what fun would that be?...

You may also have the same problem if you plan to connect the printer to a router or print server. I have a wireless Linksys Print Server and it does not recognize the USB printer. I have asked Linksys to update their Firmware. When it will happen? who knows.

Keep in mind this is a brand new model for HP and issues will arise they may not have the needed tech support yet. Notwithstanding, for this price and excellent output, I think it''s worth it.

I have had my 1022 for about 9 months now, and have yet to have any sort of problems and I''ll never buy another inkjet. It prints quickly, and while it lacks a duplex unit, the driver does support a sort of make-shift duplex printing. Select double sided printing, and print. It prints one side of all pages, then you can put the stack back in the printer without changing the orientation and hit one button on the printer to print the opposite sides. No need to remember how to manually print alternate pages in reverse order and so forth...saves me so much ink and paper. (This works on my mac. I assume it also works on windoze.)

Also, I would like to point out I have printed over a ream of paper and haven''t needed a new cartidge and have no signs of ink shortage.

I have now had this printer for close to 4 years, so I thought I would update the review. For the past two years, I''ve been using the printer substantially less. (I am no longer a student and don''t have frequent need to print things.) I am still on the first print cartridge, and am most of the way through what is probably my third ream of paper since purchasing the printer.

The printer still works for most things, but it has developed some problems.

* For some reason, ink seems to stick too long on the barrel, so I get text ghosting on the page, i.e. text at the top of the page gets printed faintly again halfway down the page, on top of whatever text is supposed to be there. This isn''t bad enough to cause difficulty reading, but doesn''t look very professional. I can no longer use the printer for things like resumes.

* Sometimes i I haven''t printed anything in a while, the printer puts out a puff of smoke after ech printed page. This isn''t a problem with functionality, per se, but is sort of worrisome and makes me think the printer wont last too much longer.

* With OS X 10.5, printing over Airport no longer works properly. I''m more inclined to blame Apple than HP for this, but neither company seems inclined to do anything about it at this point. I now need to physically connect the printer to my laptop with a USB cable, which is somewhat annoying.

* There doesn''t seem to be any channel for having the printer repaired or doing self maintenance. I''m sure *someone* can fix it, but likely at more than the cost of a new printer. Again, we are back to the sad situation of printers being sold as throw-away products. I will probably have to buy a new printer to replace this one, even though this one should meet my needs.

Overall, I still think this printer is a much better purchase than an InkJet, but I would lower my rating to 3 stars because HP apparently follows a design philosophy of planned obsolescence, even with their LaserJets. I''d like to find something that is designed to last a bit longer without having to buy a huge, high-dollar office printer. For comparison, many Apple LaserWriters (produced 1985-88) are still operational. They just don''t build them like they used to.

I read earlier reviews and it would appear that this printer either works for you and gets 5 stars, or doesn''t work and gets 1 star. There is little in between.

We bought it about three months ago as a replacement for an old HP 4P that finally died. The difference is remarkable. The 1022 installed quickly (USB); has a small footprint; prints the first page of a job very quickly; is fast; relatively quiet; prints cleanly; handles paper well; does envelopes (one at a time). But I would stress that we use it lightly, perhaps a few pages a day and I can''t comment on how it would stand up under very heavy use.

Note that a new cartridge is about 1/3 of the cost of an entire new printer.

Still, we recommend it.

I have been very impressed by this printer for the price. It zips through pages and looks a lot better than the Brother and Samsung purchased by our office. I am using it on Mac OS 10.4.7 & 10.3.9, but installations at the office in 2 Dell XP Pro PCs went without a hitch. The noise level strikes me as pretty quiet, especially compared to the old HP LJs that I used to support.

If you do a lot of printing, step up to the LJ1320. It''s faster and has a 5,000 page cartridge availble that lowers toner cost to less than 2.5cents per page. The 1022 only has a 2000 page cartridge available. The 1320 goes on sale for only a hundred dollars more than the 1022.

I see there are some conflicting reviews about this printer, but I guess as always it depends on who is using the printer and what they''re using it for. I use this printer in my home office for personal and very light business use, meaning I don''t print more than about 10 or 15 pages per day. In this capacity, I''ve been thrilled with it so far.

The set-up was so easy---about five minutes to put everything together, Windows XP recognized it right away and the software only took seconds to install. I''ve had no problems with it now after using it daily for nearly three weeks. To me, it''s fast, easy and high-quality, just like I would expect from HP.

I love black and white output. I spent a large fraction of my professional programming life writing a well known chemical drawing app, and that is all about clean, crisp text, smooth lines, and every pixel in its place. And for that kind of output, this laser printer is a bargain. There is just no contest between laser and ink jet when it comes to pure black and white output. Where an ink jet will give you blurs and sudden dislocations, this printer gives me sharp contrast and straight, mathematically pure lines. It''s really quite lovely.

I particularly like the clever design of having the output bin deeply embedded in the center of the device, as I''ve had problems with other printers dropping their output all over the floor. Much less likely here.

Startup time is quick for a laser. Printing a sample page from my MacBook Pro over the network took about 15 seconds from pressing the print button to the sheet popping out. For someone used to the office laser printer taking a couple minutes to warm up, that''s just fantastic. Be sure to use proper laser paper with this device, at first my wife and I had been using the flimsy ink jet paper from our old printer, but that had a tendency to bring along extra blank pages. Sturdier paper designed for laser not only eliminates this problem, but feels great in the hand and looks great.

The built in scanner does a serviceable job, either doing color scans for my computers over the network--I use my Mac''s built in Scanner Utility, or Picasa on my wife''s Windows 7 PC--or directly making greyscale copies at high resolution. I don''t have a chance to try out the FAX feature, as I don''t have a home phone line. A 300 DPI black and white scan took 14 seconds over my Gigabit network switch which is pretty good.

In general, I disagree with the need for the Wi-Fi model. Stationary, desk bound devices should be connected via Ethernet barring an unusual circumstance. Wi-Fi can be finicky, something rarely true of Ethernet. I have green gigabit Ethernet switches in several locations in my home, and they have been reliable and left Wi-Fi bandwidth for mobile devices.

As for the bad, I wasn''t able to automatically connect to the printer from my Linux (Ubuntu) server as it couldn''t find a proper driver. It doesn''t support AirPrint for use with iOS devices. Oh for the day when being a laser printer meant having a Postscript interpreter, but alas, this just supports PCL6 and Samsung''s own SPL, so much for hand coding my own EPS.

[Update: A commenter pointed out the availability of the Samsung Mobile Print App in the Apple App Store. This can print and scan from this printer easily. I was able to print a Google Docs document, and a web page, and their are a variety of of other document sources such as the photo library, camera, clipboard, etc. I did experience a low memory warning after a few minutes of trying it out, so there are bugs. Still seems a good added benefit, although AirPrint support would be better.]

In general, I''m happy to now have a laser printer in the house. My wife''s home business generates a lot of paper, and ink jet cartridge costs were adding up. At 2500 sheets per toner cartridge, our cost per page just plummeted. I''ve looked many times in the past at buying a laser printer, but either the user reviews were horrid or the price was out of my range, so I''m glad the low end is now so good.

[Update: Assuming I''m reading the status page printout correctly, the toner cartridge that shipped in the box lasted 430 pages. Some of the mileage was my kids doing mostly black copies of their hands and toys, so this might be a non-representitive number. I''ve replaced it with the high capacity cartridge you can get from an Amazon merchant in the $72 range. I hope I get the promised 2500 pages.

I was unable to print from my 10.8.2 running MacBook Pro, and the operating system couldn''t find an appropriate driver for this printer nor does installing the driver from Samsung''s website help. Printing from Windows still worked. Finally, I tried restarting the Mac and it started to work.

The Samsung SCX-4729FD is a multi-function black and white laser printer that connects to your network via USB-computer, or Ethernet. There is a wireless model of this printer also available from Samsung.

Installation is easy. Remove about 8 pieces of tape, two pieces of styro, foam on the scanner plate, a plastic clip on the toner cartridge, plus a long plastic strip also on the toner cartridge. After that it''s a snap to insert paper (it handles a4/a5/lgl/letter/etc.), plug it in and get going. Windows 7 found the printer immediately and installed basic drivers, but if you want to do more then install the Samsung software. This was actually the slowest part of the whole process software installation.

You can optionally have a toolbar for the printer that offers one click access to the major functions of printing/scanning/faxing/copying. I chose to remove that because if I want to use the printer I''ll open the software myself.

The device goes into, and nicely stays in a standby mode. It powers up when you need it, otherwise it has a soft blue light on the power button to let you know it''s ready when you are.

Printing is fast and very high quality in black and white. Reproduction of shades of grey is as expected, with crisp lines and borders. Scanning is good. Optically you can scan 1200dpi or move up to 4800 enhanced mode. Everything I need to scan is usually 300dpi or less which it does very quickly with a nice preview and auto-cropping software. It can immediately save the file as an image or load it into your default app.

Scanning/faxing/copying can be done by placing paper on the glass, or by folding out the paper feeder on top. This is pretty typical in most office devices.

Finally, double sided printing is a nice feature. My last printer could do it but you had to flip the paper around yourself. This printer takes care of that for you by sending the paper into the exit tray then pulling it back in to print on the second side.

Overall I''m giving this 4 of 5 stars. Here''s what influenced the stars for me.

Quiet printer and great eco/power-savings functions. Fast printing at high quality. Small paper tray does not hold a full package of paper (convenience). Lack of included ethernet cable (also convenience). Too much software that all does similar functions (there are two programs that both do scanning).

UPDATE: I decided to go ahead and put it on the network and with the included software I can now scan and print across the network. Very easy to do just plug and play, or if you want to customize (like giving it a static IP address on your home network) you can easily do that within the management software. Now the only thing I haven''t done with it is fax and for that I''ve got to find a phone jack somewhere close ;-).

This machine is light-years ahead of what could have been purchased for this price even a few years ago.

While it may be a little too bulky for desktop use, Samsung has packed functionality into every cubic inch. It does what it claims to do, and does it pretty well. The monochromatic print quality, and double sided print feature are just as good, although not nearly as fast, as some of the much costlier industrial machines. The scanner quality is, even at the highest resolution, about on par with a lower end, middle-of-the-road scanner. The same is true of the copier quality (I would recommend reducing the factory default darkness to -3 or -4). Unfortunately, I have not utilized the fax feature.

I did not connect this device to a network, just my personal computer. In attempting to set up the machine, I was disappointed to discover that the necessary USB cable was not included. Luckily I was able to find a spare lying around the office. Now that I am all set up, I would have to recommend to others that the wireless version (Samsung SCX-4729FW/XAA Wireless Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier & Fax) would probably be much more convenient. I also wish that the power cord were about a foot longer, but that is probably a preference unique to the setup of my office.

Without the Eco function enabled, which is helpful for fairly consistent use, the machine does take a little while to warm up; which can be a little frustrating in a hurry. However, that can be more or less solved by choosing the Eco feature. The scanner is also a little sluggish; particularly at its highest resolution (which is only marginally better than the intermediate resolution), but still not terrible.

This might not seem like a glowing review, but it is in a way. Yes, the machine is not the highest quality, and is certainly not suitable for industrial or multi-person, all day utilization. For the price, however, this machine is a great answer to many small office needs. Again, if your needs outweigh the relative functionality of the machine, the value is meaningless, but for intermittent need to get done tasks, this machine is a cost efficient little workhorse.

It is better than just okay. If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. It would probably have garnered 4 stars if not for the USB frustration.

Every since I left my last office, I have struggled along on inkjet printers. They are nice, but more expensive for the ink per page, and 95% of my printing is Black. I print letters, I print sermons, I print words! This 1200 DPI printer, which whips out copies at 29 per minute, is an awesome addition to my office.

The paper feeder holds 250 pages, so is a very nice size if you print a great deal. The drawer can be adjusted for varying sizes of paper.

The only thing I would change is to make it wifi, but even that is available for hardcore wifi users at Samsung SCX-4729FW/XAA Wireless Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier & Fax.

This particular model can be set up as a part of your Ethernet system or hooked directly to your computer using a USB cord. For simplicity, since I do a majority of my printing from my laptop, I have it set up in my office and hooked in using the USB cord.

I have been impressed by the copying, both the quality and speed, as well as by the printing. Scanning, using their software is incredible and fast, and can be saved as either PDF or JPG as well as bitmap. The software for the scanning is very easy to use and automatically crops as well as allowing optional cropping. The feeder works very well, and the double sided printing is intuitive and easy.

There is an eco mode which saves toner and forces double sided printing, however I am not currently using it. I wasn''t as happy with the copies and I prefer to decide whether to print single or double sided. I will also not be using the fax feature, since I can simply scan and e-mail the documents (or put them in a drop box) that I need to send. This seems to be the trend today, fewer faxes are being used. Still, if you need one, this one will fill the bill.

If you have multiple computers, it might be worthwhile to purchase the wifi enabled version, but for normal single computer use, this is sleek, with a smaller sized footprint, was light enough for me to easily move around, and really does the job quickly and easily.

Obviously, I can only speak for short-term on this model, but I come back and post later if I encounter difficulties.

I print a lot of copies for my writing and research work. I was using a basic laser printer, very cheap toner and so very user friendly to me. But it didn''t have a lot of flexibility. I had to use another printer for scanning and copying, and have been looking for something to do double sided printing, so as to save paper.

This printer fit the bill perfectly. It was easy to set up and easy to use. This model doesn''t have the wireless access of other models, but I didn''t need that. It can be networked, however, so that is enough for me.

It has a pretty small footprint for its capabilities. Everything is tightly packaged and engineered so that there''s no wasted space. It is very functional and works great in all of its capacities that I used it for. It was my go to printer, the one that I used the most (I have about 4 other printers each with their own speciality). This is an all around workhorse--not the best at any particular job, but competent at a lot. I even was able--in this day and age--to use the fax feature. Had to fax a form to our insurance company. Plugged it into the phone line, dialed the number, everything worked quickly, smoothly with absolutely no bumps. This printer really is just plain easy to use.

My one complaint about the printer itself is that it''s really surgey. Meaning that when it turns on, it really draws in a lot of power. I couldn''t plug it into my UPS because of that. It kept tripping the power circuit. We have an old house and my office is an old add-on room off the side. So the wiring isn''t the best. When I turn this printer on, it has a tendency to trip the circuit breaker at times, and otherwise affect other things that are plugged in. I''ve not had that problem with other printers or devices.

Still, the bother was worth it to me. I liked this printer a lot. Note my use of the past tense.

The trouble I am now running into is not really one connected to the printer itself. But it radically affects my use of the printer. I am a PhD student and adjunct professor. My home office budget, thus, is pretty bare bones. While I need functional equipment, I can''t pay the frankly outrageous prices charged for the manufacturer''s stock toner. I''ve long relied on other manufacturers who make generic brand toners and cartridges for my printeres. So, when after printing about 1200+ pages the toner that this printer came with needed to be replaced and I looked on Amazon for generic substitutes. Found one, got it, installed it. The printer didn''t recognize it. Called the company (Inkers). They were great, said I had the right model of cartridge, so they sent me another one. That one didn''t work either (got refund quick by the company). Tried another brand. Also didn''t work. Cartridge fit, but the chip wasn''t right. Tried a refill company. The replacement chip they sent also didn''t work.

Meaning I can''t find a cheaper generic toner for this printer and I can''t quite get to paying the full toner price. So, for now, this printer sits unplugged and unused.

I bought this paper thinking it was printable on two sides. This is true, but you can only print photos on one side. The other side is OK for text and colored graphics, but the photos look terrible. I write to my nephew who is deployed, as well as another relative in the Peace Corps...I insert the pictures in a word document, so that the letters they receive always have a sprinkling of various pictures throughout.

I bought this printer from Amazon in August for $199. It was easy to set up on the network and prints very well. PC Magazine complained about the printing speed being a bit on the slow sidebut I do not agree. For a home office or a small business it works just fine. The toner cartridges and drums are MUCH less expensive than the comparable ones from Brother. My Brother printer before this worked just fine but after 20,000 pages I needed to buy a new drum...for $149 if I didn''t want an off-brand product! Instead I just bought the new Dell printer!

In regard to the previous reviewI TOO bought this under the impression that it came with the 800 sheet tray. I emailed Amazon twice afterwards and in true Amazon stylethey told me it was a misprint and simply changed the description/title. It must be nice to advertise one thing and then sell another. But it was still a great deal. I just don''t care for the way they handle customer complaints.

This printer is very slow to print, but once it is started it runs great. The size of this thing is rediculous; my HP 4L took up less space and reaction time was quick. However this printer can take a beating and keep on printing. I have dropped several time from over 3 ft and it is still running. Toner cartridges are a bit expensive and only last 3000 pages.

If you have ever used the "Easy Apply" labels in the past, you''ll be surprised to learn that Avery redesigned the "Easy Apply" label strips. I''m not sure why they did this, but the new format doesn''t fit the actual tabs on the dividers, so you''re left with approximately 2 millimeters of excess clear label hanging off the end of the divider. Okay, so you figure you can just stick them on manually, right? Well, that is much more difficult than the old format where you applied each label individually because of the "Easy Strip," which is designed to stick to the "Easy Apply" strip. Overall, I would STRONGLY advise any consumer AGAINST purchasing this product until Avery''s product development team redesigns the "Easy Apply" format, and who knows when that will be?

Where I work (up to 30 users for these purchases), I was responsible for bringing two C5100N''s into the workplace. At the time I purchased them, September 2003, there was little information on them. The goals I had were merely to bring color to the workgroup at a slightly-moreaffordable-than-inkjet and definitely more affordable than outsourcing color.

My experience: I agree that the photos aren''t the best. They look GREAT (or, much better) on cardstock, and the finished-look of laser gives a more professional look than inkjet, to some extent. The price was right for us, and the results were acceptable for an organization that is used to using a mimeograph for volume color, one color at a time.

Since our emphasis isn''t on speed of first output (nobody is really near the printer), the time to first print is not really applicable. Duplex cardstock is an iffy proposition. IF the settings are correct, it should work, and does work.

Consumables are used pretty fast, to be sure. To maintain stock, I''ve been purchasing up to 4 each C,M,Y,K monthly, and have purchased three sets of imaging drums since September. (I''m supposed to: 21000 images on one printer, and 32000 on the other). The web interface is *great*, and tells anyone who wants to know, what they need to know. I''ve recently purchased a third unit for another department. Understand that the toners are rated for 5% coverage, so printing ''coated'' paper is going to reduce your output significantly.

In all, we have increased our color visibility in ways that we wouldn''t have touched either in inkjet or outsourcing. The costs are only of consumables, so we don''t have to worry about leasing a color copier. When our user''s needs start becoming more toward photo-ready artwork, we''ll consider moving to a more advanced model. But when it comes to an Excel Chart or just getting the printout in color, we''re pretty happy.

Pro: Workgroup color at a decent print speed, and for what was needed, a good price. Images are fixed on paper. Networkable out of box. Rather decent technical support.

Con: Color is put in distinct points on paper, so no smearing or mixing allowed like inkjet. Slow-ish first page to print, but afterwards makes up for it.

Conclusion: If photos matter, this probably isn''t for you. But, if you primarily need clipart, graph, chart, and text color, and want to do some volume of it, this may be a great addition to a workgroup or department.

I''ve been using this little guy for about a year, super fast and excellent quality. Uses about any kind of paper but doesn''t especially like recycled. It''s a wonderful addition to our family of printers. I can''t believe the price on this one. I paid $600. for mine.

Ink sits up on the paper but doesn''t smear. Has some kind of chemical process unlike any other toners.

I have had my oki printer for more than two years now, and am thrilled with the performance it''s demonstrated. I work with very expensive color and black and white copiers on a day-to-day basis, and quite frankly, I''m more impressed with my C5100. Toner is expensive, but you can buy the high yield cartridges for a little more, and they''ll print up to 4500 pages at 5% coverage. I have another color laser printer that i use much more frequently, but for quality, time to print, and overall satisfaction, the C5100 is an easy winner.

I even recommend Color laser printers to most home users, because as much as $170 per cartridge scares people, Think of how many $50 ink jet cartridges it would take to get the same result.

Pros: Fast, Quality Graphics (not photos), with high yield cartridges very low cpp. and accepts a very wide range of media, everything from envelopes to card stock to transparencies.

Cons: Poor Photos

Please do not buy this printer. You will spend so much money on toner cartridges. Not just because the toner cartridges are expensive, but because the printer needs a new toner cartridge every 400-500 pages. It is terrible. The printer constantly says "Order "K" toner" , then Order "C" toner, then "Order Y Toner", then Order M toner. One day it will show you have 95% toner left, the next day it will say you have only 8% left, "Order Y toner" and you haven''t printed a thing. Tech support will tell you to "shake the toner cartridge", well you can "shake it like a polaroid picture" and it won''t do any good. Once this printer needs toner, it will not forget about it. The red light will stay on and the display will say "Order Toner". Also, once it determines it needs more toner, that''s it, the printer won''t print anything. Not even black. Please, take my word for it, stay away from this toner eating machine. You will be sorry at around 400 pages, and you''ll get to 400 pages before you know it.

I bought this printer because I needed to print out lengthy manuscripts, as well as graphics-heavy PDF files. This printer does both very well. It prints very fast if you have one or two pages. When I printed a twenty-page document, it paused every few pages. The entire document printed, crisp and clear. I was particularly impressed with the graphics output, which came out much clearer and sharper than my old HP laser printer.

I could''nt afford to spend a thousand dollars for a printer. Basically I needed a laser printer to print my manuscipts and to get away from the annoying inkjet printers. I was losing money from the inkjet because of the costley cartridges. If you do not use them within 6 months, the cartridges dry up. No need to worry about that with a laser printer. I have been very pleased with the Brother. It performs and looks good. I certainly did not find this printer in Office Depot or Office Max. Glad I shopped with Amazon to purchase this item. Quality merchandaise for the money. Time will tell if this printer will hold up with continuous usage.

I picked this printer over the others from Samsung and HP in the sub $200 level because of the black & sliver color, which was probably not the best way to choose in hindsight. I''m using the printer with a parallel cable on Windows 2000 and the performance is great. The warm up time is short, probably 10-12 seconds, and it actualy does print @ 15 PPM on text and close to that on .pdf files with a mix of text and graphics. On large documents it only stops to reload the memory about every 50-60 pages and the paper tray is quite large for this price range. On the first toner (~3000 pages) I only had one paper jam using cheap copy paper. To load small media, such as labels and letters, there is a seperate tray with plastic slider guides which is quite handy and works perfectly.

I have only experianced one major problem and it was probably not due to Brother''s design. I was printing when the power went down and when I tried to turn the printer back on I found that it had had a CPU fault. The tech support Brother had on the matter was friendly, but a bit long winded in that I spent 30 minutes going through the same procedures for hard reset over and over. They did replace the printer under warrenty (purchesed from Amazon) with second day Fedex and paid for return shipping, which I thought was more than reasonable. All in all my experiance has been possitive and I would definitely purchase again.

It is very easy to install this printer with CD instruction. The speed of printing is sufficient for personal use. In addition, I think that Brother toner is cheaper and has availability to print more sheets of paper than others. So, I think that this printer is best for personal use. If you use USB cable, it must be shorter than 6 feet.

I purchased this printer 6 months ago. I had been very satisfied with it up until recently. Unfortunately, three issues have come to light that you should know about before buying this printer.

First, Brother shipped my printer with a cartridge low in toner. Though I''ve had this printer about 6 months, I''ve actually only printed only several hundred pages with it over that time (the cartridge is supposedly good for 3,000). So imagine my surprise when the printer indicated it was low on toner. Since it''s past the 6 week toner cartridge warranty, Brother refuses to rectify this situation and insists that I pay them another $70 for another toner cartridge. I guess that''s why they can get away with selling their printers so cheaply--they can force you into shelling out more money just as your warranty runs out. I even had a low level technical support rep admit that they intentionally ship their printers with a low cartridges (he called them "tester" cartridges)!

Second, this printer is designed in such a way that when the printer senses that it is low on toner, it will NOT PRINT AT ALL. THERE IS NO WAY TO OVERRIDE THIS FEATURE. It is not a driver issue, but a hardware one. In my case, I was about to leave for the airport and needed to print out my presentation notes. But the printer absolutely refused to print! It was midnight and I was leaving first thing in the morning, so I couldn''t just go out and get a new cartridge. You can take out the cartridge, shake it around it bit, and MAYBE get one or two more copies out of it. But other than that, you simply CANNOT print when the toner is "low" (even though there IS toner left in the cartridge!). So if you don''t have an extra cartridge on hand when the printer decides that your toner is "low", you''re in trouble! This is a maddening feature of this printer. Brother says it''s to "preserve print quality," but I''d prefer if they''d let the user decide when she or he wants to "preserve print quality" versus printing nothing at all! I''ve never had a printer do this. I could print for weeks (even months) when my old NEC laser printer indicated it was "low" in toner. If I had known that this was not the case with this printer, I would not have purchased it. It''s simply another way for Brother to get more money out their customers with their overpriced printer cartridges.

Third: Brother customer support. While it was quick and courteous at the first level of technical support, it is slow and irresponsive beyond that. My complaint about the low printer cartridge was "escalated" twice--I was promised a call back on two occasions from two different managers. It''s been over two weeks and no call backs!

Caveat emptor. My advice? Don''t be wooed with the low price--keep shopping!
