I love this printer. My wife spent hours last night playing with it and handed me a stack of really great looking prints this morning I was impressed! We currently have a HP Photosmart 1000 and a Epson Picture Mate Both still work fine, but the 680 takes the prize!!!

Ink usage. I''ve printed about 20 photos on 4x6 best quality, as well as probably 20 "normal" letter-sized pages (text+graphics). The only ink level that isn''t 100% is Light Magenta, which looks to be about 99% :) Others have said that these Epson photo printers use a TON of ink. I''ll find out soon if this one does too.
CD/DVD printing. I haven''t tried it yet.
Conclusion: So far, I''m extremely pleased with the purchase. I would definitely recommend this printer/copier/scanner to someone else.

I purchased this all in one printer approximately 1 month ago with some hesitation because of some of the other reviews. I guess as with a lot of things, being the first to purchase isn''t necessarily a good thing. Fortunately I have had NONE of the experiences some of the others have had.Mine was purchased from a store (during shipping products can get beat up). I pretty much pulled it out of the box, loaded the software, and began printing. In addition to the printing speed, I was amazed at the picture quality. There truly is a difference when I compare the images to those printed off a former HP 7700 series printer.
One thing I did notice is you pretty much need to use Epson paper. I tried using some Kodak paper I had and noticed that even after leaving the prints out for 8 hours the ink still smudged. That is not an issue if you use the Epson paper (it seems to dry almost instantaneously).
Printing on a cd was easy using the supplied cd tray. I also have had excellent results from scanning pictures and documents. All & all I am VERY satisfied. I was so satisfied I donated my old HP printer & HP scanner to charity for the tax write off!!!
If you need an EXCELLENT quality all in one printer, this is the one for you. Do some price shopping as there are some stores that were giving $30-$40 off, but definitely purchase this. You won''t be disappointed.

My girlfriend just got me this printer for Christmas, and I love it. This machine cranks out beautiful prints very fast. It prints border-less 8.5"X11" prints, which is a plus. It''s one of the few all-in-one''s that do that, and it does it well. You can even print 4"X6" prints fast, as well as DVDs and CDs.It worked great right out of the box. Install the drivers, plug the printer to the computer, and you''re set. The drivers are the most versatile I''ve ever seen with an inkjet printer. You can even print double-sided prints with the click of a button with it''s auto-duplexer (one very minor complaint i have is that the only paper that the auto-duplexer will accept is plain-jane inkjet paper... you have to re-load the page to print on the other side of it).
The Claria Hi-Definition inks are amazing. The light cyan and light magenta cartridges really make sunsets pop and renders skin tones properly.
You can print from an assortment of flash memory, and you can even scan a document directly to PDF to flash memory.
I''m very satisfied with this printer. As someone who works in the graphic design field, I''d recommend it to anyone.
I do love this printer, but the ink cartridge setup has been quite a challenge. I had no technical problems with the initial set of 6 inidividual Epson cartridges included with the printer. I ordered a new set of 6 "generic" cartridges online to save money since Epson brand can run around $19.95 each if you don''t shop around.
The black cartridge was the first to empty. Attempting to replace it with a "generic" brand was unsuccessful. This printer is programmed with software that rejects anything but Epson. (I am told one can search for "driver download Epson RX-680" online and find a driver download that is not as "detailed" as the software included with the printer, but haven''t tried it yet. It also should be noted that using another driver or non-Epson cartridges will nullify Epson''s manufacturer''s guarantee. However, if you purchase the printer at an office supply store that sells their own warranty, some will still honor their warranty even if you don''t use Epson products.) ...By the way, once I installed a new Epson cartridge the printer worked fine...
So far I''ve printed several photos (which came out nice) and several documents. All the cartridges are nearly empty after about 3-4 weeks of moderate use. Ink consumption and cost is definitely the downside to this otherwise wonderful machine... Also, love the copier feature -have used it several times. This machine can work independently and does not have to have the computer on to use it.

The printer arrived via UPS® as expected. I unpacked the printer but allowed it to sit and stabilize for a couple of hours (this is always a good idea with electronic equipment) before applying power. After setup & configuration, I began to run it through its paces. One of the first jobs I ran was a manual script with 375 pages, printing both sides. The job was completed in minutes with with excellent quality. What a work horse!
The print is fast, quiet easy to use and logical, with menus easy to follow. It is well made and management can be performed from the front panel or via web access. I used both, mostly the web. Duplex worked great also. I am very please at my choice. This printer is excellent for individual and group printing. Lexmark quality is built in.

I brought this Printer used from an AMAZON.COM seller for $150.00. I brought additional memory for the printer. I honestly expected to get taken advantage of but; the printer worked. The printer was not new and it had that tired refurbished look to it. I took this raggity looking Lexmark E460DN Printer out of the box expecting it to be junk. I plugged in the Lexmark E460DN Printer expecting it to give me error codes. Upon turning on the printer I expected it to need toner. The Toner meter was full. I installed the additional memory, connected my Lexmark E460DN Printer to my Windows 7 computer loaded required drivers and my printer roared to life providing great prints of both words and pictures. This printer has a major defect in the toner/photoconductor design. If the toner/photoconductor is not removed properly the connections are easily damaged. If they are damaged the part is not replaceable and not under warranty. You will have to replace the printer.Granted, this issue is caused by improper use so I understand Lexmark''s stance. I just want to make sure no one else wastes their money on this poorly designed "printer".

Had this printer for a couple days now. Print speeds are good for home or small office use. Scanning also works fairly well. I have not tested faxing. The first dislike I have so far is that it does not have built in wifi and no support for airprint but I knew that prior to purchase. The second dislike is that it only supports a handfull of media types and I am unable to print to size 10 envelopes which means I have to keep my old HP Laserjet 5n around just so I can print envelopes. The printer is well built (heavy) and I assume will last a long time. I was very impressed with the quality of color printing which I would rate as a B+. Setup was fairly simple at under 5 minutes. I downloaded the drivers from Oki''s web site instead of from the disk but ended up loading the disk to install the Oki Scanner Utility which was not available as a download. The disk also comes with a basic Paperport software. There are several sleep mode settings but I set mine to 5 minutes which turns off the fan after 5 min and puts machine into sleep. This printer does not have a paper drawer but rather a tray you flip down and a charcoal colored dust tray clips on to the tray, not that big of a deal but some people may not care for that design. In order to do duplex printing, you must purchase the optional Tray 2. I bought this through Costco for $160, which is an amazing price for a quality multi-function laser printer. While the real price of any printer is the ongoing cost of toner, Costco''s price is about $100 less than that of comparable products (such as the Dell 1355cn, which tends to go on sale for about $250).As others have noted, set up isn''t quite "plug and play". Rather than deal with the set up CD, I simply downloaded the latest printer, fax, and scanner drivers (i.e. software) from the OKI website. I also downloaded PDF copies of the manuals so I''d have them on my computer. But you still need to know a little bit about what you are doing to set up this system. You also still need to use the CD to install various types of software.
There are two ways to connect the printer to your computer. The first is that you can buy a USB cord and connect it directly to your computer. (Don''t spend more than a few dollars on the cord. This one will do fine: http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-Hi-Speed-USB-Cable-Feet/dp/B001MXLD4G/ref=pd_cp_e_0.) Just to be clear, this is not a wireless printer. But you can connect it, with a cord, to your computer or to your network. Then, you can connect other computers in the house to the printer wirelessly. The only reason to get a true wireless printer (i.e. one that doesn''t need a cord at all) is if you want to store the printer in a different place than your computer or router. Most people keep their printer right next to their computer and so shouldn''t be willing to spend the extra money for a true wireless printer.
I''ve had the printer for a few days now and am still learning about it. The print quality is great. I''ve scanned text (not photos) and have been quite happy with the results. Note that the default scanning resolution is quite course. You can increase the resolution and improve the scan quality. I haven''t played with the fax yet. This isn''t the right printer for you if you want to print photographs or make really high-quality scans of photos. I don''t print photos that often, and when I do, I just send them to Walgreens to be printed.
If you don''t print that often, set the power saving mode to turn off the printer after 5 minutes of use. This saves a little energy, but more importantly silences the printer.
This printer is more like the monster printer we have at the office, which is something I like about it. It will probably take me a very long time to read and fully understand everything that this printer can do, but so far I''m happy with the purchase.

I am not sure what the guy above was talking about this has energy saving mode so the fan does shut off you can adjust in 5min increments even the high dollar canon printer that this unit replaced. All drivers work with my win 7 x64 professional computers. Also networked flawless with my router. The print quality is so much better than any inkjet printers I have had. The only problem is trying to find the duplexer in stock online. I got mine at COSTCO they had a coupon offer and the printer only costed $160.

First off, the review I''m writing is from the product from seller VeraGJ. Their shipping time was very fast and they packed the paper very well so the sheets would not be damaged during shipping.
I have had no issues sticking the labels on packages, the adhesive seems strong and it gets the job done.
The labels are light so if you have writing underneath it makes a shadow on the label, but it is not too bad, these are not made for covering up older labels.
I use these with an inkjet (HP) printer and the ink smears (dusty) a bit at first and mostly in heavy areas (more than typical paper does). So far this is not a deal breaker for me. I am just careful applying the label to the package if I apply it before it dries. The paper feeds well through the printer as well, no issues there yet. (I will update this if that changes). But I''m able to feed the sheet through multiple times if I need to print one at a time.
I would say if you do not mind waiting for ink to dry and do not have to cover up old labels then these will be good for you, especially for the quantity and price. If those are two pain points for you, you will probably look to buy better quality.
I simply bought these so I could stop printing out labels and taping them to packages. I do not to heavy volume maybe around 10 at a time at most, and feed them in my printer as needed.
For the price I will put up with these few annoyances. I wanted a cheap product to get the job done without any impact to shipping, and this only adds a few cents per shipment. With how cheap these are it probably costs similar to printing and taping the label on a package, but this is way more convenient.
If you''re looking for cheap, that''s what you get. I''m sure there is better products out there, you''ll just have to pay a higher price for them.

Yes, they''re cheap. And yes... they''re cheap. I''ve had no problems getting them to run through my printer, but as others noted, the ink smears badly and it''s very difficult to tell which side is "up." I''ve also noticed that in damp weather the labels lose their grip, so I''ve started taping them on.
Here''s the thing. I really don''t expect a lot from a label except for what it''s supposed to do. Which is... stick to the box or envelope I put it on and not smear all over itself and my hands. These labels just don''t cut it. I won''t be buying them again.

Great labels, my only complaint is the back/front is not marked. The seam between labels is very thin. I do a lot of shipping from home. I had been buying the half-sheet Avery brand labels because I was afraid of thinner labels getting jammed in my 7 year old HP printer. Once I upgraded my printer to an Epson WF-2540, I decided to gamble on and try out the cheaper labels.So far, they work fine. They''re very thin--you can see through them fairly well, so if you plan to use these to cover up old labels or writing on your package, these are not for you. You''re better off getting the more expensive Avery labels, which are completely opaque. However, if you just need a ton of labels to print on and opacity isn''t an issue and you have a newer printer, I''d say these work fine. Sometimes my printer grabs two sheets while printing instead of just one, probably since they''re so thin, but that''s really a minor issue. Nothing has jammed and the ink doesn''t smear, plus they stick fine on all the packaging I''ve used (flat rate boxes, envelopes, and polymailers). I''ll keep buying these since the price is right and they work perfectly fine for what they are.

This is the first time I have tried a non-photo printer, using this HP Officejet 6500A All In One model. If you are wondering what the difference is between a photo printer and an office printerit''s the colors. With my Photosmart, I have 2 extra light ink colorscyan (blue) and magenta (pink) shades. These 2 extra ink shades give you a full array of even the slightest color variations. Working in art and photography, I noticed a slight color difference in certain shades. For a professional artist making photographs or great color prints, this is not the printer for you. For the average office or home use, non-professional photo prints or just needing a regular printer, this printer is superb.
This HP Officejet 6500A All In One machine includes 4 devicesa printer, copier, scanner and fax machine. What you get for the money is one great machine. This machine has earned the Energy Star, which means it will save you money, since it met the Energy Star program''s test method criteria. SCANNER4 1/2 Stars I am quite spoiled with always owning an Epson Perfection Photo Scanner for the last 10 years. So I am comparing a truly perfect scanner with this HP one that is included in this All In One machine. This Scanner type is a Flatbed 8.5 x 11.7 and also an ADF 8.5 x 14. These are good maximum document sizes for general use and office use scanning. It does have real life technologies with a 48 bit scanner depth. The scanner resolution for optical is up to 4800 dpi. This scans above average, but not quite as sharp as my Epson Perfection scanner. I notice tiny minute details from spending decades fixing old photos from the late 1800''s, so the average person might call this scanner excellent, where I consider this above average as I am used to much more pixel detail I get from my Epson Perfection.
FAX MACHINE5 STARSThis Fax Machine has a transmission speed of 3 seconds per page. The Fax resolution is up to 300 x 300 dpi. Overall, this HP Officejet 6500A All In One gets a 4.75 STAR rating from me, with it''s usual great printer, super fast fax, and better than average copier and scanner. Many of my friends have some of the latest All In One Machines that I have heard complaints about, from the bugs and how non smoothly they run. This machine is unbelievably smooth and fast and when more people use and review it, it will definitely rank high on the Hewlett Packard website. It is actually better than some of their other models I''ve heard about, and may prove to be their best model to date. Add to this Hewlett Packard''s great support and web site that helps you with any problems, downloads, drivers and manuals, and you have a great 4 in one printer, copier, scanner and fax machine for the money.

HP sent me an email showing this model on sale. I already had an older Photosmart C7180 but I thought this one might be better it had an ADF for one thing. After setting it up, it wouldn''t print. Had to call tech support at India Central, and I spent four hours with a nice enough fellow who, alas, didn''t know much about the printer. Okay, so it finally would print.But it wouldn''t scan. I then did some checking and found out most people had the same problem. The scan software didn''t work, or if it did, you had to reconnect it to the computer each and every time you wanted to scan something. If you have a big stack of photos to scan, this is impossible.
Today I spent two hours with tech support, and they finally admitted I had a bad printer. "But! We will send you another!" I just laughed and told him he was going to send me a return address slip and give me my money back. He finally gave in.
This printer is meant to be disposable. HP makes the big bucks off the toner.
Next time I want to buy an HP product, I''m going to read the users forums very carefully. I could have saved six hours, and at my age, that''s kinda crucial. And finally HP printer software usually provides you with an HP Solution Center that makes the various functions very easy. The 6500A does NOT have it, and from what the tech told me, it never will. It has, you see, this cute little color touchscreen that doesn''t do much at all.

This is a great printer and it served my needs well. I don''t have much desk space, so having an all-in-one product was a great solution. It takes up about 19 by 15 inches of desk space. It is a very good looking printer... sleek and all black. The printer came with a 23 page Getting Started Guide and also a quick start chart which made it easy to get everything up and running. I chose the network (Ethernet) connection to connect my printer and it was fairly easy to get started with my printing. It was a good thing I had a spare usb cable to connect the printer to my computer, because it wasn''t included. So far I have been really happy with the quality of the print outs, both color and black prints. I don''t know how long the ink cartridges will actually last, but they are supposed to be high capacity cartridges with "the lowest cost per page compared with in-class inkjet all-in-ones." We used HP 6150''s for years. Dozens of them. They worked great. We had a failure rate of about 1 every year of about 30 machines. Eventually, the 6150 was no longer available, so we switched to the 6500. Huge mistake. This printer is terrible. 2/10 fail straight out of the box. Several more failed with a few months. All 10 have completely failed within the 1st year. The ink system is garbage. The printheads, ink cartridges clog so easily it''s not even funny. HP has literally costs our business $1000''s in downtime, repair time, ink and replacement. I would not recommend this or ANY HP product to anyone again. We''ve had the same issue with the 7000 Large Format''s as well.Where the HP really shines is in the printing function. It is quick and the print quality is really good. I printed some color photo cards on matte paper with both printers, and the colors were a bit richer and brighter on the Epson, but the difference was not dramatic. I also print out a lot of sheet music (I edit for several composers), and the HP does a beautiful job very clear, clean and crisp. I needed to print some concert fliers that included a photo of the artist as well as text, and those came out much better on the HP, which surprised me. Those were printed on HP Premium Presentation Paper. Normal everyday printing is also high quality.
The copier is also good for everyday usage and fairly quick. The color copying isn''t quite as bright as the original documents, but for normal use, it''s fine.
I was disappointed in the scanner. For single page documents, it''s okay, and you have the option of scanning to a computer or a storage device, but if the documents are several pages, you have to scan one page at a time and then put the documents in folders. The Epson asks after each page if you want to add more pages or save, so multiple-page documents are saved as one document rather than several individual pages. I also really like the preview function on the Epson which lets you see if you have the document centered correctly very helpful when scanning from books. I also found that the scans are not nearly as clean on the HP, with heavy black areas on the sheet music, so I''m not thrilled with that function.

The Epson is truly a wireless printer, but the HP uses the internet to connect to various machines in a network. I print from four different computers, and they all work fine. There have been a couple of times, however, when I had to turn the HP off and back on to reset it before it would print. The HP is supposed to print from phones and iPads, but I haven''t tried that (my phone isn''t connected to the internet and I don''t have an iPad).
For a fairly inexpensive printer, the HP is a very good buy. If you do a lot of scanning of multiple-page documents, I''d recommend the Epson. Otherwise, I think you''ll be very pleased with the HP.

I think foremost of importance is how does the print quality look. I have 2 other printers to compare the prints with. One is a full size HP D7560 and the other is a Epson PictureMate Dash. I printed the same test picture right from a memory card on each. Comparing the three both HP''s look better than the Epson. The HPs were sharper and more colorful than the Epson. Comparing the HPs to each other I''d say the D7560 wins but not by a lot. The 646 picture had more color saturation and the D7560 had less color saturation and a little bit more detail making it look more natural. Between 646 and PictureMate I am going to keep the 646 and sell the PictureMate. The pics aren''t perfect with the color saturation but they are good.
I know I could probably tweak the color on the PC of what I send to the Picturemate and make them match but I''m not all about doing that. The Picturemate did print a little bit faster but both are fast enough that it doesn''t really matter. The 646 can do 5x7 and the PictureMate can''t. Another plus the 646 has over the Picturemate is print head is in the ink cartridge. The Picturemate has built in heads that if you don''t print for a while will clog up. At least with the HP if that happens and it can''t be unclogged a new cartridge will fix it whereas the Picturemate would probably be shot.
The 646 has built-in Bluetooth which worked well with my Blackberry Tour. The touch screen seems to work well. When you turn on the printer for the first time it will walk you through setup right on the screen which is nice. Interacting through the screen with the printer seems to work well and is nice. You can do all kinds of editing and card making right on the printer if that is what you want to do. That is not my cup of tea but I saw the wife playing with it and she said she liked it and would use it to make quick cards for different things.
My printer came with a quick instructions, padded carry case, power adapter, ink cartridge, some paper, and a stylus. What they did with the padded carry case is pretty cool. It is what the printer comes in. They wrap a cardboard sleeve around it and fasten the zipper together for in the store. Less waste is nice.
There were no software discs. The printer has software built into it for 32-bit Vista and XP. Oh it has MAC OS 10.4 and 10.5 software on it too but I know nobody cares about that. ;-) None of the built in software did me any good as I run 64-bit Vista and Windows 7 RC. I went to the HP website and got the 64-bit Vista drivers to install in Windows 7 and it works fine.
So overall I liked this enough to ditch the PictureMate and although its not perfect print wise I would say if you are looking for a compact 4x6 or 5x7 photo printer with Bluetooth this one should work well enough for what it is.

I am a photographer so finding a compact printer to take with me is something I need to have at hand. I have the Canon Selphy 510 which takes the ink ribbon and the postcard paper (4x6).I told myself I would never buy an HP printer since they were never that great. I took the chance and got this one since I had a gift card and figured it was worth investing in it. I wanted a compact printer that prints up to 5x7 and HP was the only one available that did that. When I first printed from it, I didn''t like the way the colors printed. It felt like they bled in too much and there was no separation on the colors. However I was printing from my camera to the printer via usb pictbridge. So I did the one thing I should have done in the first place. I went to the colorspace on the printer screen and changed the colorspace to Adobe RGB. The colorspace on my camera was Adobe RGB and when 2 different colorspaces are set you are bond to get colors that don''t look good or match what you see on your screen. So by changing the colorspace on the printer (its automatically set to auto) I was able to solve my color problem. Mostly all cameras are set on Adobe RGB. To change the colorspace on your printer go to the wrench icon, next go to PREFERENCES, scroll down until you get to colorspace and select Adobe RGB.
Your images should now print much much better and closer to what you see on your screen. Mine came out even better after changing the colorspace.
Also I have read the other reviews the bad ones too and realize that many people don''t seem to do enough research on the printer before they even buy it. I haven''t tried the bluetooth yet and wouldn''t bother since phone cameras are not so great in the first place and you can''t expect the printer to print high quality images from a phone. Its rather annoying when people complain that their phone pictures didn''t come out great like the printer would magically fix the crappy camera phone quality. PLEASE!! If you want to print pictures from your phone I recommend the Polaroid PoGo printer for $50 you can get prints at 2x3 which is wallet size and it does print okay. Not 100% excellent but good enough to make you happy to have that little printer.
I love the fact that it takes larger than 4x6 paper, the touch screen rocks and the fact that it came with its own bag is sweet.
Also I recommend buying the ink by itself and getting the paper on sale. People don''t seem to realize that they can get the paper on sale for much cheaper than what it costs. I bought a box of 5x7 50 pack for less than $8 and a box of 4x6 for under $10. If you buy things for less you do save more on ink and prints.
The only cons I have with this printer is that it does print a bit slower than I would like for a 5x7. However the print quality is set to best so I would believe that is why it prints slow. If it was set to normal or even fast normal I''m sure the speed would be much faster. I also don''t like the fact that it doesn''t take compact flash cards but it does accept pictbridge.
All in all I was glad that I like the printer. Also I am still using the ink that came with it. I have already printed 5 5x7 size prints and still have ink to spare, although I am sure I will run out quickly since I am printing larger sizes. It says it can print up to 15 4x6s on the ink that came with it which everyone should know is how all printers are. I also think that they based it on normal printing not BEST printing quality.
*Read the whole specifications about the printer before you buy so you know what it is saying. I hear too many people complaining how the printer doesn''t have this or that, well you should have read what it comes with before you buy it! Its called research. That''s why I got this because I liked what it said and was worth a shot buying.

The short: small, fast, minimalist, producing great looking prints.The whole package is minimalist, compact, and designed to be simple to use: The printer arrives packaged eco-friendly in a reusable tote (made from recycled materials) that''s actually nice enough to reuse. There''s no driver CD, and minimal setup directions. The ink cartridge is all-in-one. The printer needs only an inch or so clearance behind, and a few inches in front (for the paper guide and output). There''s a tuck-away stylus to interact with the touch screen, and a fold-down carry handle.
On powerup, the printer displays a simplified version of the paper quick setup directions, and instructs the user to print a calibration page.
When attached via USB to my WindowsXP system, the printer has an unusual design in which is appears to Windows as a CD drive, from which I did the typical driver installation, after which Windows saw the unit as a printer, not a CD drive. Unfortunately, this base Windows software installation didn''t seem to offer an interface to the custom modes available from the touchscreen (eg: passport photo, greeting card, etc).
I''ve owned other photo printers, including Canon''s small dye-sub printer: Canon SELPHY CP510 Compact Photo Printer , and this HP beats all of them in speed, print quality, and color reproduction. For color, primary colors are rich and vibrant, though neutrals (such as earth-tones) and pastels are slightly washed out. Blacks are solid and jet-black. I tested some complicated, textured, outdoor scenes and was very pleased with the results (one sample was a mix of sky, desert dust-storm, and people). The same complicated print took 1m43s at "best" and 43s at "fast normal". Interestingly, the quality difference between the two prints was modest. The "best" print was a little more rich and nuanced in detail, but at 5x7, "fast" seems adequate for most things I''d print.
I tried a couple of the speciality modes, and the printer did "the right thing" in printing passport photos, correctly scaling and sizing them (no more figuring out the DPI to resolution ration to get the exact 2x2 required for passports!). Greeting cards came out well also, though the small number of available designs are limiting.
While I like the printer a lot, I did have some quibbles:
* The inbuilt initial setup is a bit simplistic, and led me to at first not taking the tape off the contacts of my print cartridge (I don''t usually use inkjet printers so didn''t realize). Interrupting the setup before it was finished resulted in having to go through the setup process again. There''s such a thing as "too simplified".
* To use the touchscreen-based modes on the printer I had to put the images on a memory card (presumably a bluetooth-enabled phone would have worked too). I realize many people leave their old photos "on their cameras", but I take a lot of photos, and all my archiving and sorting is done on computers, so the on-card-only design makes the custom modes much less useful to me.
* It would be nice to be able to create custom greeting card designs.
* For some reason the sticky protective cover on my model''s LCD wouldn''t come off without a lot of prodding and scraping, leaving a mar on the touchscreen. The screen itself has a non-obvious locking mechanism in its popped-up position that has to be pressed in the opposite direction from what I expected. I could see the screen getting broken in a multi-user household
My prints were all on HP "Advanced Photo Paper". Most vendors formulate their inks to match their paper, so the combination typically yields the best results.
Aside from the minor quibbles, I''m very pleased with this photo printer. Highly recommended.

This is a very compact machine and fairly simple to use. It produces crisp and clean prints with good detail. Landscapes come out best. With portraits, the colors get funny and one needs to experiment with different manufacturers'' paper, and the "Photo fix" and "Colorspace" settings under "Preferences". As the other reviewer mentioned, there is no black ink cartridge so the print colors are compromised and, often, inaccurate. I see this as a printer to use if one doesn''t own a computer or to take to a party and print photos on the spot to give to friends. The limitation on this latter use is the slowness of the machine. Prints take 1&1/2 minutes and imputs such as editing and scrolling are also slow. Print sizes are limited to 4"X6" and 5"X7" (and panoramic 4"X12").The printer did not do a good job of finding and correcting red-eye and pet-eye (a feature I liked because I take a lot of pet photos). It was hit and miss. Also, while I didn''t try all the special effects, I found problems with those that I did use. I could not get the machine to print a border on an edited picture. Despite showing the preview of the border on the edited photo, the actual print would be a border on the unedited photo.
I do not know how long an ink cartridge lasts, the sample provided is not a full cartridge. Cartridges are about twenty dollars.
It does not take all sizes of memory cards but can print from a Pictbridge certified camera (whatever that is). So check to see that your card is compatible.
As with all electronic products, currently, at least in my experience, there is no full owner''s manual provided, only a "Start Here" guide. One has to download the full manual from HP''s website, so now I have an unbound stack of 47 8&1/2"X11" pages. I think this is an unbelievably cheap practice.
To make prints at home of casual snapshots, this does an adequate job, especially if one doesn''t have a computer or printer.
Pros:
#1 Excellent quality prints, equal to CVS'' Kodak machines and the Canon MP620 and MP830.
# 2 Lightweight and easily portable. Easy set-up allowed me to quickly print at a nursing home, in a kitchen and on a (covered) front porch in inclement weather.
# 3 Attractive carry-pouch holds wall plug, plenty of 4x6 and 5x7 camera paper, and a full size extra ink cartridge.
Negatives:
#1 No batteries. To be truly portable, you should be able to use batteries to power the A646. You cannot take this printer to the beach or a park unless you use a converter and hook it up in your vehicle.
#2 The printing time is slow each 4x6 print takes 1 minute, 30 seconds to print. This is too long if you plan to print your entire vacation from a camera card, but its fine for traveling to the houses of family/friends and printing a few shots.
#3 Not all functions are intuitive. Why does the "pet eye fix" pop up on the main menu, but not "human red eye"? The user guide (only available online at HP) is about 100 pages in length. On page 46, it says: "to remove red eye: (1) touch the Setup icon to display Setup menu; (2) touch Preferences, (3) touch Red Eye Removal; (4) touch On to remove red eye from all prints. Touch Off to undo."
Still, I recommend the HP A646. Photo quality is excellent. I am enjoying the printer, and I use it far more than my other printers because it''s fun to take to events and print off photos for friends and family.

Used this paper in my Epson R1900 printer to print out a poem + picture. The result was superb! Only thing that took some doing was finding the right Epson driver settings for the paper; seems that Galerie has changed their product naming scheme so it was hard to find the right settings. I restored several old black and white photos and printed them on Ilford Galerie Smooth Fine Art Paper using the Canon Pixma Pro 9000MkII. We use it with dry erase markers in consumable workbooks so I can re-use the book with the next kid since we homeschool. This brand seems to be a little harder to erase and we have to use the expo spray (or anything with rubbing alcohol (like hand sanitizer) to remove the dry erase.
