Overall, I must say I do recommend this HP Deskjet to anyone in need of a printer. It''s pretty reliable most of the time (90% of the time it prints and copies things, without fail. I''ve tried scanning 2-3 times, with no luck. So I can''t comment too much on that!).

There are better printers out there for sure. But there are many more printers that don''t perform this well.

My parents bought this 2 1/2 years agoso yea, it''s had a decent life. However, I''m one to buy things that last. The print function stopped working when a giant E appeared in the display. I have some knowledge of computers/how to fix things but even after an afternoon (3 1/2 hours) of searching through forums, I still could not find a solution for how to fix this printer. I do not recommend this printer to ANYONE.

I bought this all-in-one printer about four years ago and have been very pleased with it. I use Linux exclusively and was happy to see Tux [the Linux penguin] pictured on the box, indicating the printer''s compatibility with Linux--although I have yet to see an HP printer that doesn''t work with Linux!

All of its functions work exactly as they''re supposed to. I use its scanner a lot. It prints quickly and crisply.

I definitely recommend this low cost, reliable all-in-one.

Avery labels are impossible to print. The printer wheels cannot get a good grip on the slippery paper. I''ve tried cleaning the wheels (although access is difficult).

In all other ways I''m pleased with this printer. But since printing labels is an important part of my business, this printer is useless to me.

This problem might totally be the fault of Avery. All I know is that the two products are incompatible with each other.

My "real" rating would probably be 4.5 stars out of 5, but since I can''t do that, I''ll round up.

When my old printer died, I decided to look into an all-in-one since my scanner was getting up there in age and I had begun to notice how convenient having a fax machine in the house would be. I also wanted built-in two-sided printing (since I''d been spoiled with that feature on my last printer), and good print quality (especially photos). I also thought it would be nice to have each color in separate ink tanks so I wouldn''t have to replace anything more than what I had used. With this printer I got everything I wanted except for the separate ink tanks.

I''ve been very impressed with the scan quality and copy quality. I have sent and received faxes with absolutely no problems. I''ve printed pages of great looking sharp text and impressive looking photos just using the default black and tri-color cartridges (i.e., without putting in the optional photo cartridge). The color LCD and the menu system it uses is great and easy to navigate.

If you''re trying to decide between this printer and the 7410, I did some research and emailed HP to confirm what exactly the differences are. The only differences are:

1) The 7410 comes with the extra 250-sheet tray that attaches to the bottom of the printer and adds an extra inch or two to the total height of the printer.

2) On the machine itself, the 7410 has a ''collate'' button and an option to collate within the ''copy'' menu. HP also calls this ''reverse order printing'' and they say it can be activated on the 7310 through the driver (although I have not done it). The same button on the 7310 is ''Lighter/Darker'' and the ''collate'' option is not in the copy menu.

3) While both printers have built in networking, only the 7410 has built-in wireless networking. This was not an issue for me since I already have a wireless router and I just ran an ethernet cable from my router to the printer. Now any computer that connects to the wireless router is able to print to the printer without having to go through another computer. The printer is basically its own device on the network and relies on nothing other than its network connection (i.e., no usb cables connected). If I had the 7410, the only difference is that I wouldn''t have the ethernet cable coming from the router, but the functionality is the same.

I had no problems actually installing the software on any of our computers and have no problems using or accessing the printer from any computer on the network ("accessing" includes accessing any flash card in the media slots). There was a little complication with the software upsetting XP''s Data Execution Prevention (DEP), but there is an update on HP''s website that took care of that pretty easily.

My complaints:

If you don''t pull out the tray extender, anything you print will fall on the floor. This is kind of annoying if I''m printing from my laptop downstairs, go up to retrieve my print job, and find it all over the floor. Simple solution: If you just leave it pulled out (but not ''flipped'' all the way out) it will still catch pretty much everything without having to deal with the thing jutting too far into space.

As I mentioned before, I wish HP''s ink cartridge system was different so that each ink color had its own cartridge that could be replaced as the individual color ran out. On a related note, I wish I could leave the photo cartridge in without having to swap out the black cartridge.

This is a great printer that is the first all-in-one that I have used that could perform all of its many functions really well. It is a little on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for. I have never regretted buying this printer.

We can all hope that software updates will eventually catch up because this is really a nice piece of hardware. The software when working is actually pretty solid, the problem of getting it to work of course exists. Plus it simply is way too bloated for what it does.

Below are some of the headaches I experienced getting to a workable environment with mulitple 2000/XP PCs and a network connection...

No "Custom" install option. Not only is the full install huge but there is no ability to pick and choose the various sub components. (e.g. I don''t need OCR, but if I want to use Image Zone to print photos I get it)

Installer is slow and the multiple progress bars really don''t illustrate "progress". Added annoyance of a bitrate field. Do I really care how fast my CD ROM drive is reading? Rather than adding this excess to the installer I would have appreciated better status from the actual software.

Uninstaller doesn''t even seem to know where it put its files. Rather than quickly deleting files and unregistering components, the installer does a full hard drive scan looking for files. This can take a really long time if you have a large harddrive with a lot of directories.

The printer has a nice little web interface that allows you to do some basic configuration options. It even allows you to do some scanning to PDF via your browser. This interface could clearly be enhanced to provide resolution/color options as well as handle multi page scanning. It would also be nice to be able to browse the memory card files using this interface this would allow several of the features to be used without intstalling any client sofware.

Multi page scanning. One of the primary reasons I bought this computer was the sheet fed scanner feature over the network. I was almost completely disappointed on this front as all initial scanning attempts seem to be 1 page at a time the manual even has a subtle implication here by specifically stating put documents on the glass top. Clearly the HP client software was written for use with a single sheet scanner as there are no software driven options available to the user to scan a stack of pages. FORTUNATELY the printer is aware of its features. By using the "SCAN TO" option from the printer control panel you can initiate multi-page scanning and direct the results to go any PC running the client software package. This isn''t too big of a drawback as you have to walk to the printer to put the pages to be scanned in anyway, although it still is a little frustrating that the software can''t control all the capabilities.

The installs worked perfectly on Windows 2000, but I encountered random scanning ability in Windows XP (NOTE: I wasn''t at SP2 yet on this machine which may be related).

Despite 700 megs of software, the imaging director software doesn''t gracefully reconnect when the printer is taken offline or provide much in the way of status. It clearly was written assuming a USB connection and they hacked in the network capability. The result is the software often can hang and needs to be restarted if you power down the printer. This is particular problematic with a laptop where the printer isn''t necessarily offline but the laptop may not be on the network.

Ok enough with the bad I am after all keeping the printer. I found the solution to most of my problems...

HP offers a "HP Basic Feature software/driver" download from their support website. This is a software install designed for corporate network usage (~40MB). A simple command line setup call with your printer IP address and it puts the printer driver, TWAIN scanning driver, and network drive for card access on your PC nothing more. Everything worked well in this mode and even handled power resets on the printer almost immediately. Too bad the boated client software doesn''t use this same code base. With this setup you don''t have the full blown Image Zone manipulation software or the Send To integration (see above), but you do have a solid network scanner/printer available. I have one full installation workstation and use this smaller client for all the other workstations.

I was looking for a multifunction device that could be both a home office printer and a network printer for other computers in the house, and this product from HP had more of the features I was seeking than any other I found. Unfortunately, it has been a chore to get it to work, and the first unit I received had to be exchanged because of a hardware problem. The good news is that HP tech support is generally pretty good at diagnosing and addressing these kinds of problems, but the bad news is that it is a real time sink to go through something like this. And still, if I do the ''typical'' install of drivers and software, the process destroys my desktop''s network drivers (apparently as it automatically uninstalls a scanning program that goes with my old HP Scanjet). If it all worked, it would be awesome, and the parts that do work are pretty neat. But they still need to get the bugs out of this, and I''m feeling like I was a little too quick to jump on this new product.

The sheet feeder on my machine was bad.

There is something wrong here.

I have owned this printer/scanner for more than a year. During that time, it was the source of endless frustration. First, the sparse positive is that it does as it advertises:

It scans.

It prints.

It faxes.

It makes copies.

However, every single thing it does, if it accomplishes it at all, has major caveats, including some that are so mind-numbingly frustrating, I could only recommend it to my enemies.

The software is nightmarish and like most other HP products, is never updated. It has a well-documented bug which causes machines to freeze on suspend, but while documented, it has never been fixed. The solution is to disable the software, or give up the ability to have your machine go to stand by.

Even if you keep the software, it fights you every step of the way. God knows what it''s doing, but when it''s running, it chews up about 5% or more of processor time by itself, while the machine is idle and the software is NOT in use.

All the software foibles aside, the machine itself manages a so-so fax, poor quality scans which are barely adequate for copying a document, but do no justice to a photo. The automatic document feeder jams with regularity and its use is actually slower than just feeding the documents yourself, because you are forced to clear jams constantly, and the way the document feeder works, the scans themselves often smear and distort. It is a uselessly broken feature.

The print quality is just average, or below average, and is slow.

But the reason I am ready to bury this thing is as follows: every couple of months, whether or not you use the ink cartridges, it will demand a new cartridge with a vague "cartridge error". I don''t know if this is intentionally to force the user to buy new catridges, or if over time, the cartridges themselves clog up and must be replaced, but most recently, a new cartridge with *3* pages of print went belly-up after 2 months.

And here''s the clincher: you can''t use ANY other function until you replace the cartridge. How''s that for holding you hostage? Spend $40-$50 on a new cartridge which you haven''t really used or forget about sending that fax, or making that scan.

Avoid this unit. I have also used the 7410, which is no better. If you MUST have an all-in-one, I advise you look elsewhere.

This is the most expensive paperweight I have ever bought, but will be the most satisfying piece of trash I will ever throw away.

Upon opening the printer box I was pleasantly surprised to see the printer enclosed in a carry all bag to make removal a snap. (great bag to use for groceries, etc)

I installed the printer using the wireless setup wizard and the printer installed without a problem. However, the software would not recognize the printer''s IP address. I tried to uninstall and then install the software, restarting my computer, disabling the firewall, etc. etc. to no avail. So, I decided to print directly from the printer. I scanned documents, and that worked fine.

The time frame to print a scan of a document from scan to print is about a minute and the result is that the black ink seemed slightly lighter. But, regular documents have vibrant black ink. I also scanned a photo and the result was great!

The next day, I wanted to connect using a USB cable, but the printer did not come with one. So, I had to grab a USB cable from my old printer. The set up then continued quickly and I could print from my computer. While connected through the USB cable, I printed several family photos and the results were fantastic. The pictures are clear and the color is vivid. Really superior pictures and they are printed quickly.

I then called HP (on a Saturday) which has 24/7 tech support to find out why I couldn''t use the printer wirelessly. We were on the phone for about an hour coming to the conclusion that I needed to change the security setting on my router from WEP to WPA. The agent was very helpful. I thought the customer service was one of the best that I have had to deal with. I did have to call my router provider to make the necessary changes. I wanted to make sure I did that correctly but those comfortable with this type of set up shouldn''t have a problem. The call was quick and easy and I can now print wirelessly.

All the while, I printed lots of family photos using the software included with the printer. The picture quality is fantastic; it''s very colorful. I am very satisfied with the results.

The software is easy enough to use and I am still checking out all the options, but overall there are lots of backgrounds and print options. One thing I was looking for was printing multiple pictures on one page of photo paper. With the collage feature you can manage that task when you arrange the photos accordingly. There are plenty of themes such as holidays, baby, travel, kids and teens, sports, etc. You can touch up the photo by adjusting cropping, brightness, and red eye and you can also add text.

The printer looks almost as good as the pictures it prints. I really like it''s sleek black design. I also loved the fact that HP included a whole pack of 4x6 paper. After printing 25 4x6 prints and 1 8x10 print the ink levels are still more than 3/4 full.

Since my main focus for this printer is printing and scanning photos I am thrilled, the photo quality is superior.

First let me start by saying that this printer is immaculately packed for easy removal from the box. I have never received a printer that the cables are all stored in a reusable HP zippered accessory bag and the printer is in a LARGE canvas tote bag with handles to slide out of the box with not tugging, pushing or using your feet.

The HP printer is a beauty in a sleek high black gloss finish. It comes with power AC adapter plug, phone line, installation CD, quick reference book, HP photo paper samples and two face plates (one English & one French). It DOES NOT come with the USB cable. This does not surprise me since most printers now-a-days do not include the USB cable.

After removing all the tape used to keep the printer intact during shipment, I plugged in the unit as instructed in the quick reference book. Since I have a wireless home network, I was able to connect to my network using the WiFi Protected Setup (WPS). After verifying the network name and entering my paraphrase (password) it was online in seconds. I then followed the "animated" instructions on the LCD screen on how to install the ink cartridges and paper. There is a one time initial installation that the printer cycles through that takes about 7 minutes. It downloaded updates, this is all happening without having to use my computer. The printer spit out a test page showing that the printer head had been aligned/calibrated.

Now it was time to install the CD. I am using it in a Windows 7 environment and the installation took about 8 minutes, so it is quite a large file. I followed the easy steps to setup photo printing, fax number and registration and I was done. The printer was ready to use.

I have many printers in my home since we have a large family with a total of 6 computers/laptops, but this is my first HP printer and I can honestly say this is by far the nicest, fastest and easiest to use printer I possess. The colored printouts are beautiful in vivid colors, no smudges or lines. It does only come with "setup" ink cartridges so I don''t know how long they will actually last without being replaced. The ink cartridges "HP 564" series are quite reasonably priced. Depending on which cartridges you go with, the HP564 yield approximately 250-300 pages while the HP 564XL series yield about 600-700. It takes a total of 5 ink cartridges black, Photo black (item #CB322WN), cyan, magenta and yellow.

THIS IS A PHOTOSMART PRINTER (e-all-in-one) BUT IS NOT CONSIDERED A PHOTOSMART "PLUS" PRINTER. This makes it confusing when searching for ink cartridges.

Besides the amazing features such as WiFi, embedded bluetooth, apps (which allows you to print from the web without PC), ePrint, and several slots for memory cards (Memory Stick, MMD, CF and USB-removable drives, the thing I love the most is that it only takes one series of cartridge to print photos or documents! It does require one black and one black "photo" cartridge but at least I don''t have to be pulling out cartridges whenever I want to print photos.

The ePrint function is extremely easy to use. All you need to do is have the printer connected to a home network and follow the onscreen LCD instructions. The printer assigns you a unique email address. Then go to the HP ePrint website to register and set up your security options. You can set it up so anyone can send printing projects to your printer, or use just selected users. You can send photos, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, reports and many other file types directly to your printer by emailing them from your smartphone. I am using my Motorola Droid. It''s that easy.

**Currently the ePrint does not support MMS format (so no picture text messages). ePrint only works if you send an email using email clients such as Yahoo, AOL, Google, etc. You would have to attach the picture to the email. Hopefully in time, there will be an update that allows pictures to be sent as MMS messages.

Since I am using my Yahoo email account to sign into the ePrint website, I get a confirmation email that the job was sent to my printer. You can always check the status of your jobs on the HP ePrint website as well. All print jobs will stay in the printer''s memory (queue) for 24 hours. This is a great feature since you never know if the printer might go offline when you are not home.

When I send projects to print from other computers (ie sending a report home from work), the project prints with no issues. However, sometimes photo emails do not get processed and are stuck with a "pending" or "failed" status. I believe these are due to some "issues" at HP''s end since this technology is so new. I think with time and new updates, these bugs will be fixed. For the time being, HP recommends turning off and then restarting the printer to correct server connection issues/print jobs. Also make sure files are less than 5MB in size, I get many failed print projects because they are larger in size.

For my iPad, I downloaded "HP iPrint" which is a free Wi-Fi application on my iPad. Once I downloaded the application and installed it directly from the iPad, I was able to print pictures from my Photo albums directly to the HP C410 Printer without using the email option stated above. There was no install procedure I had to do at the printer my iPad automatically recognized the printer. Make sure to check out HP''s website to learn more about the different applications, bluetooth and WIFI printing options.

11/28/10 UPDATE: Apple released an update to version iOS 4.2. AirPrint makes it simple to print email, photos, web pages, and documents right from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. There''s no software to download, no drivers to install, and no cables to connect. The HP C410a will automatically be showing as the listed printer to send your projects to.

I highly recommended using HP Premium Photo Paper, glossy (100 sheets, 4 x 6-inch borderless). The photo paper is reasonable priced and your photos will come out with the feel and look of professionally printed photos.

Even though it has some minimal connection "issues", overall the print quality is excellent and offers features that will exceed your expectations!

Having already owned an HP all-in-one printer, I already had high expectations before even opening the box of the HP C410 series printer. Needless to say, my expectations were greatly exceeded.

-Slight Digression-

The first thing you notice when you open the box is how well the contents are organized. Everything is packed in an individual bag. There is no turning the box upside down, no yanking and turning, no fetching your girlfriend, wife, or significant other to hold the box upside down while you pull the printer out. You just effortlessly grab the handles of the bag and lift (with the box right side up). The bag the printer comes in is oversized and it is reusable. It even had washing care instructions on the tag, so there''s a bonus already. I know, I know, what about the printer? I just thought this was very unique and interesting to have a usable bag to include with a printer of all things. Now on to what you stopped by this review for.

-Printer Review-

The printer itself is very sleek and modern with its shiny black finish. It is well taped to avoid any damage in shipping. The accessories included are packed in a small, easy to carry, reusable zipper bag. It''s perfect for carrying computer accessories like power cords, if you have a laptop. The accessories that come with the computer include 5 ink cartridges, a set-up CD, AC adapter plug, phone plug, quick reference guide, two face plates (on in English and one in French), and sample photo paper (50 included). The printer does not come with a USB cable (as it wants you to use its wireless feature, which requires a wireless router and internet connection), so you would need to buy this separately if you need one. The printer also has slots for your camera''s flash memory cards and a front USB port for digital cameras and removable drives.

The actual set-up of the printer was a breeze. Simple plug and play. There are step-by-step instructions in the quick reference guide as well as an animated tutorial on the 2.4 inch color LCD screen that allow you set up and connect your printer. It also guides you in inserting the ink cartridges and setting up a wireless network connection. So if you never read the instructions, the screen on the printer will guide you through its integrated video setup wizard. Takes about 10 minutes max to complete and calibrate. After this, you still have to put in the included CD in a computer to load the drivers (compatible with Windows and Mac) , and set up photo imaging and fax, which also takes roughly ten minutes. Then, finally, it is time to start using your printer.

There are some amazing and ingenious features on this printer. Aside from doing the most obvious tasks of printing, faxing, scanning, and copying, it also allows you to utilize the web. Apps available on the printer, such as Disney Online, tabloid, weathernews, websudoku and current event apps allows you to print from the web without a PC. However, in order to use these apps you of course need to be connected to a router of some sort for internet connection (which I mentioned earlier, in order to get full use of this printer you will need an internet connection). A USB connection alone will not enable functions of this task nor will it enable apps.

Moreover, you can print from anywhere, anytime, with any device using HP ePrint. This alone has to be the selling point for me on this printer. At the end of set up, the printer will print out a page detailing a website to visit along with a code to enter at this website, along with your printers very own e-mail address. This is also an easy set up once you access this website. And it''s free. Once this is completed you are able to send photos, documents, and PDF files to your printer. I tried this with my iPhone, blackberry, laptop and from a work computer and it worked flawlessly and as advertised. You are also able to create an Allowed Senders List to manage access to your printer and to set options for senders.

While faxing I was able to fax in color or black and white, which was rather speedy for a consumer printer.

It advertises that it can print up to 33 ppm black, 32 ppm color sheets, and found it to be a little faster than that, even when printing at best quality. Draft was slightly faster. Oh yea, it also prints double-sided.

The quality of photos being printed on this are absolutely astonishing. I have never seen such vivid colors of a photo coming from a printer. There were no obvious lines or smudges on any of the photos I printed. To test this, I printed pictures from my computer, camera and from my blackberry and iPhone and the quality was the same for all. The photo paper that the printer comes had an instant-dry feature. From the moment the photo is printed, you can frame it and the picture will not smudge. And another selling point, you do not have to swap ink cartridges to print photos. The ink cartridges come with a "photo black" included. How is that for convenient?

Does it sound like I am recommending this printer? I needed a printer with an option for performing automatic 2-sided scanning via a document feeder. The product description for this printer on the HP web site states, "Fax, scan and copy unattended, and handle two-sided documents, using the 50-page automatic document feeder." After unpacking and assembling the printer, I searched the animated help that comes with the software for a description of how to perform a 2-sided scan, and sure enough it described the procedure. Great, only the software doesn''t support this feature. (The menu options described in the animated help don''t exist.) HP telephone and email support was abysmal. After several days, I eventually got through to someone who understood the problem, but they flatly refused to accept a return, saying that it was an issue for the retailer. Fortunately, Beach Camera (via Amazon) accepted the return, and $35 lighter (for shipping), I got a refund.

UPDATE 01/2013: Well, since upgrading my OS to Mountain Lion, the app I used for scanning (Mac''s built in PDF reader app Preview) has changed considerably. It no longer scans documents reliably from the printer. I can get it done, but it takes lots of tweaking and generally takes 2 to 3 times as long as it used to to get things done. This is not the printer''s fault mind you. This is Apple changing the way Preview works on the Mac. I love certain things about the Preview update, but they really screwed up the way the application scans documents. Major disappointment from Apple on this. Scanning from the flat bed generally works well, but the document feeder jams up constantly and fails mid-stroke.

As a Mac user, I have used HP printers in the past with mixed results. I scoured printer reviews to find a printer that would work reliably and intuitively with Apple products but none of the reviews really convinced me that it would do what I needed. Apple''s website said this particular printer supported AirPrint and it seemed like a step in the right direction. After taking my chances and buying this printer, I can say that I am pleasantly surprised. I tested each of the following scenarios and everything worked perfectly:

1. The printer is set up on my home wireless network and was very easy to set up. No need to connect it to a computer via USB.

2. It prints wirelessly from an iPhone or iPad using AirPrint with the latest versions of iOS on the iPhone or iPad. Requires iPhone 3GS or later apparently. I have a 3GS and I get a print option. My wife has an iPhone 3G and she does not have a print option even with the latest iOS update.

3. It prints wirelessly from a Mac (software update will install new drivers when you set up the printer in preferences). This always worked well for me with the old printer, but the new drivers add some extra options to the print preview window.

4. I can now (FINALLY) scan wirelessly from the printer to my Mac using Preview. I had to experiment a little with the settings in Preview, but it took about 5 minutes to figure out and I got the results I was after. This is a HUGE plus for me. Before with my HP 3300 I had to scan to a memory card, then put the memory card into my Mac and the scans were usually chopped up in some weird way.

5. I can print wirelessly from iPhoto directly to the 4x6 photo paper in the photo tray. Again, I had to play with the print settings on the print preview window to select presets and paper size, but on my second try it worked perfectly. Previously, I had to dump the photos to a memory card on my Mac, put the memory card in my HP 3300, then print from the memory card to the photo tray. This printer saves me quite a few steps.

So, for everything I do, this printer has delivered flawlessly. Finally a printer that "just works" for Mac users. So far I have not had any paper feeding issues, which was a constant headache with my old printer. I have not tried scanning or copying from the feed tray or using the FAX option yet since I do not currently have a land line, but I do intend to use those features in the future. In addition, this printer prints WAY faster than my old 3300.

Hopefully this review will be helpful for other Apple folks out there who need a printer that will work for them.

My problem is that I printed a few hundred pages and then the printer reported IT WAS OUT OF TONER. WTF? The "starter" toner was supposed to be at least a few thousand pages.

I made the mistake of buying a new black toner cartridge. Then after it printed a few pages, it said the magenta cartridge was out of toner! I was trying to print black! This printer has a serious problem of not knowing when or if the toner cartidges is either out of, or completely full of toner.

After I found this trick, I got another 1,000 pages out of that "empty" toner cartridge.

Here''s how to fix the problem (quoted from someone else but it really works... you can Google this problem and it will say to put electical tape on the sensor, but that does NOT NOT NOT work with this printer. Only this will work):

1)'' Turn the printer off and then on again.

2) Open cover.

3) Press Cancel and Secure Print buttons at the same time.

4) Press the + button and scroll through the colors that need to be reset. (reset both STR and STD when prompted. I just reset them all.

5) Press OK (twice, once for STR and STD)

6) You''re done. You don''t even need to take the cartridges out and the printer thinks you just installed four new toner cartridges.

Reset menu for the durable parts counters:

1. Open cover where you access toners

2. Press GO and + button at once, you''ll see menu come up displaying reset counters for drum, fuser, etc.

This unit has stopped printing four times, telling me that I''ve burned through three magenta toner cartridges. Each time I used this "secret" reset method and fixed it. I''m still on the original magenta cartridge. This "secret" reset method has saved me $200.

Oh, Brother... fix this problem and quit robbing people by making your printers tell them they are out of toner when they really are not. What you are doing is just plain weak. WEAK!

In this day of laptops, netbooks, and sophisticated phones, a network printer can simplify things greatly. With a wireless network already running in the house, we could add a wireless printer and put it where it most convenient for us rather than where there was a network connection. Enter the Brother HL-3070CW.

First a bit about printing technologies: Inkjets are cheaper to purchase, but the cost of ink cartridges is staggering over time. The HL-3070CW comes with a set of "starter" toner cartridges, rated for 1,000 pages each. Compare that to an inkjet, where ratings of 150 200 pages from a full set of carts are common. (Our Epson CX5800F is lucky to get 75 pages out of a set of cartridges, given the amount of ink we waste on clogged print heads.) The Brother toner cartridges cost more to replace, but you''ll be replacing them much less often. The replacement black toner cartridge is rated for 2,200 pages, and the replacement color cartridges are rated at 1,400 pages each. The printer''s drum units are also user-replaceable, and are rated for 15,000 sheets. By my calculations, assuming that we get half of the rated pages from the toner cartridges, we''ll have made up the cost difference between these technologies in less than a year. The Brother will be significantly cheaper to run over time, without the frustration of clogged printheads.

I bought the Brother HL-3070CW shortly after it was released. This was a bit of a leap of faith, given that there were no reviews available at the time. It took about 20 minutes to unbox the printer, set it up, and connect it to our (WPA-PSK secured) wireless network. It was a painless process from start to finish. The toner cartridges slot into the top of the printer easily, and the paper tray (250 sheets) slides in the bottom.

The LCD screen on the printer is very basic, but it''s easy to read, it includes a back light, and it does its job well. The menu system is very simple (one item at a time, scroll with the up and down keys), but the choices are easy to understand and the menu works exactly as expected. I''ve never had to read the operating manual that came with the printer. (Installation documentation is supplied on paper, but the operating manual is a pdf file on the included disc.)

Print quality has been excellent from the start. Characters are well-formed and easy to read, and graphic quality is very high with solid, vivid colors. Although not true photo quality, images are perfectly suitable for business purposes (brochures, presentations, etc.).

I''ve used paper from 20 to 32 pounds without incident with this printer. I have not had any paper jams, and the printer always picks up just one sheet of paper. The output tray on the top is rated to hold 100 sheets, and it looks like it could do that easily. The printer will handle legal sized sheets, although so far all of my printing has been on letter sized paper. There''s a manual feed slot for thicker media and envelopes, but I''ve not had a reason to try it yet.

The printer uses 10 watts while asleep, and wakes from sleep very quickly. It takes less than 20 seconds for the first page to print if the printer''s asleep when the document is sent. I''ve set my printer to go to sleep quickly, and have experienced no problems at all with it waking when documents are sent to it. The printer has also recovered gracefully from a power outage, including reconnecting to our wireless network automatically. It makes some noise when it feeds paper, but the noise level isn''t objectionable.

One other interesting feature: The printer includes a USB port that can be used with PictBridge cameras, or that can be used to print some document types (e.g., pdf, jpeg) directly from a thumb drive.

The Brother HL-3070CW is easy to set up, it uses little energy in standby mode, it feeds paper reliably, its consumable costs are reasonable, and it produces excellent quality output. I''m not sure what else one could ask for from a printer. I''m very happy with this unit, and have recommended it to others who have also had good experiences with it.

Very easy to configure, at least with my Mac, and using the plug-in Ethernet connection. Great color, and very crisp printouts, nearly laser quality output (it''s actually an LED printer, which uses a less-costly print technology than laser, but has the same basic laser-type toner cartridges). Even from an inch away the fonts look very crisp.

Toner cartridges are about $60 each. The starter cartridges are supposed to last 1000 pages but I''ve only had it a month so we''ll see how that goes. You get (essentially) laser quality output but for $350, color, USB, Ethernet and wireless interfaces built in so it''s hard to beat. No problems at all to date, but as I say it''s still new.

Colors are very good, but if you''re looking to print photos it''s not going to look as good as a photo printer. Great for color images and charts/graphs in documents, though, and better color quality than my $99 Epson ink jet (non photo printer).

Setup on the USB and plug-in Ethernet network connection is quite easy, there''s a built in web interface in the printer that you login to. Had to download a driver from the Brother website but that was easy to do. Setting up the wireless interface looks like it would take 30 minutes or so, but the plug-in Ethernet setup only took ten minutes plus another ten to download the driver for my computer. Hardware setup (unpacking really, and inserting the four toner cartridges) was about 15 minutes.

After following all the instructions for installation both for wireless and wired mode (separately), at the last step where the Brother software indicated that everything was finished (including intermediate steps when a page was printed correctly), my computer came up with the message that the driver is not compatible with my system, Windows Vista, because it is kernel-mode driver. I downloaded the driver again from the web, same problem. The customer service person told me over the phone that Brother does not provide support for this printer over the weekend. This is printer for use at home. During the week I am at work and their evening hours are limited.

The printer clearly received a wireless command from my computer and printed a page during the installation, but the installation could not be completed for the driver.

I don''t blame the printer; I blame the company for lack of information and help on their website and over the phone in connection with this type of problem.

I contacted the Brother Customer service several times now. The last time I insisted to talk to a supervisor. All he could say is that the problem is with my operating system and to contact Microsoft! He could not offer any help nor could he verify whether the print driver is kernel-mode print driver, which is apparently incompatible with my operating system.

I have been looking to replace my HP Photosmart inkjet printer for a couple years now. Although I enjoyed the photo capabilities of the inkjet, it just didn''t do it when I needed important black & white copies or color copies of my excel financial workbooks. I wanted a color laser printer but not at the expensive business prices plus it had to be wireless, network ready, & both Mac & PC friendly. Until I saw this Brother printer, no home color laser met all those requirements.

I was a bit apprehensive with this purchase since I had always owned HP printers & respect their reliability. But I have been using the Brother printer for over a month. It has far exceeded my expectations! Once I got rid of the cheap inkjet paper & replaced it with higher quality laser paper, the print jobs really shined. It is both a joy to print out my work financial statements in color and print jobs for every day use. I recently printed out my tax returns & enjoyed the laser black & white capabilities sorely missed with the inkjet.

This is the perfect printer for a home office. It is built like a small tank too (nothing cheap about the quality). Although I was a bit put off having to buy four print cartridges (at $40-$50 each), after shopping online I found some good buys. Plus, the output is more than double from anything you get from inkjet cartridges. The only thing it can''t do are photos. But, I kept my HP inkjet for those jobs. I highly recommend this color laser printer (btw, Brother calls it digital color LED print technology).

I got this printer a few months ago for my office and so far I really like it. The duplex option is terrific. Double-sided printing not only is greener, it helps to keep the files from getting too fat.

Getting the full size printer cartridges with it is a good deal. So far, I''ve only had to change the black one so it does monitor them separately (I''ve heard of other HP color printers that force you to change the color printer cartridges when the black runs out).

BTW, I don''t know what the guy with the envelope problems is talking about. I print envelopes frequently and it has never sealed one. Based on my experience, I would guess his problems have more to do with the humidity around his store of envelopes than with the printer.

Ink jet adhesive labels in general are ridiculously expensive. As these were the cheapest I could find, I did not have the highest expectations for them. I was pleasantly surprised. The quality is very good and the labels are fairly durable. I give them only four stars for two reasons. They are actually pretty difficult to peel, even though the backing comes off in strips. I ruined a couple of the labels trying to get a corner started on them so that I could get the backing off. Also, the labels have more of a matte texture than smooth (as the product page claims). They do not have the more glossy look that most labels have, but instead have more of a "Hello, my name is" texture and look to them. Still, for their price and their quality, I think they are more than worth the money.

I bought these to help make my son''s first birthday party memorable. The theme of his party was the Very Hungry Caterpillar. That is not exactly the latest Disney hit so finding party supplies was impossible. I had to customize everything for the partyincluding the games. The classic game of pin the tail on the donkey probably would have been good enough but I really wanted to make the game match the party theme. So I thought well, how about put the mouth on the caterpillar?

My only problem became, how do you get mouths for a caterpillar to stick to something without using tape? So of course, I turned to Amazon and found these. I was a little hesistant at first because some of the reviews weren''t so great. However, I think those are instances of people using them for the wrong purpose. This is sticker paper, not bumper sticker paper, or photo paper! As sticker paper it works great and the game was a total hit. Everyone was so impressed and wanted to know how I did it.

The value of the product is definitely worth it also. I prefer to use Avery products most of the time but their product was way pricier than this one. I was absolutely satisfied with the product and am now looking for fun ways to use the remaining sticker paper for my son. Or possibly as a gift. Maybe make some custom paper dolls for my nieces?

I bought this machine for 2 weeks and I like it. I should spend another $20 to get the higher model (MP450?) which has a LCD panel, a lid to cover the memory card slots, and an option to go wireless using bluebooth. However, bluetooth could be slow. The MP170 used better plastic for the cover.

Pro:

1. Solid built.

2. Quick.

3. Good quality on scanned images and printouts.

4. Use "normal size" ink, not like those HP using 5ml ink.

5. Easy to use and came with good softwares and useful inputs (memory card slots, USB slots, etc.)

6. It is a Canon and there is a Canon Services location in the Chicago area.

Con:

1. A little bit noisy.

2. Too big.

3. Not "Made in Japan". It was made in Vietnam.

4. The inside foam was not sticked to the cover.

my Epson crapped out on me and i need a new all-in one that was affordable, good, and i needed it fast and amazon delivered as usual!!

i thought about buying the MP130, but it seems they had stopped with it and this was the next model up. cant tell many differences to be honest as i rarley use my brothers MP130, but i must say this MP170 is very good and prints very fast!!

scans are great, copies arent to shabby!!

one thing i dont like, is it doesnt let me delete images from my memory cards, but thats not a big deal as i can just delete them after through the camera, but its a little irritaiting, but not the reason why i bought the MP170.

so, you need a good all in one, then dont look any further, as you wont be dissapointed.

I bought this in December. I haven''t used it too much but I printed 15-20 B&W sheets and the quality was very good. I printed a 4*6 photo (connected the Canon SD550 directly to the printer) and it was excellent. I also printed a colored ticket receipt on plain paper and the quality was very good with the subtle tones getting captured in the printout.

Overall, I am satisfied with the printer. If only printer manufacturers could include the USB cables that are required.

I''m using this printer exclusively for home and office paper work not for photo or pictures. My printing needs are approximately 3 x 500 = 1500 single sided pages a year. This will require 2 "XL" sets of color and black cartridges annually. Price efficiency of cartridge is average. Considering current market prices for cartridges approximately $30 for a set you are probably locking at 5 6 cents per single page print.

Buying this printer on the internet make sure that you are asking seller if USB2 cable is included. Brand new in original box printers are not always contain USB2 cable.

This inexpensive reliable printer provides good quality prints. Installation and manual are clear and easy to follow. Display Ink level in cartridges, is a very nice feature. The cartridges included in HP original box are not "XL" size and good for 200 pages only, but cartridges "XL" sizes are available for up to 750 pages.

We bought this exactly two years ago. It has been a great little home printer. I print about one page/day on average. It does use a fair amount of ink, but a printer is only an ink delivery system, right? Two weeks ago I would have given this model 4 1/2 stars. However....I turned it on one day and it simply would not print and the paper would feed halfway through and stop. My husband and I put probably four hours into it trying to figure it out. We tried everything and between us we are pretty good figurers. The HP Solution Center that comes with the software seemed to answer everything but our situation. Finally, I had time to call HP''s 800-number. I was quite pleased to get a live person very quickly. But then I realized her English knowledge was very limited and who knows what country she was in. She asked me if I had tried about three very minor things, which I had. Then without going particularly deep into "here''s what you can try to fix it," her training had obviously told her to stop there and give me this great answer: we''ll give you a discount on this particular new model and it will only cost you $80 (later I saw Amazon sold the same thing for $55). I told her I really like the printer and want to get it fixed. It boils down to this....if it is out of warranty, it goes to the dump. I told her how environmentally irresponsible it is of HP to operate this way. I doubt she understood me because she only kept repeating the $80 offer. I told her she had done a good job, but I was very unimpressed with HP. My husband pulled the D4360 apart more since we had nothing to lose and found broken plastic gears. It is toast. So short-term, it''s a good printer; long-term, America will have a lot of printers in its landfills.

My low end Epson printer died after outliving it''s life expectancy by two years. Desperate for an immediate replacement I opted for the HP Deskjet D4360. It''s strong points, it''s cheap and... ummm, that''s all I can come up with. The negatives... for starters, it''s a bottom feeder, in oh so many ways. Forget about printing labels, envelopes, custom forms, anything other than a standard sheet of ink jet paper will not feed through. You WILL be learning how to unjam this printer in the first day, guaranteed. The paper feed is underneath the output tray, making it very awkward to load. The page size adjuster is positioned under the lip of the output tray, designed for long, slender fingers and if it''s not adjusted exactly, the page will pull sideways and print off the page. Have templates set up to streamline your work? Forget them because this printer stretches out your document when it prints meaning it''ll never hit within your templates'' parameters. And the ink cartridges, they''re tiny... and the color cartridge is exactly the same size as the black & white cartridge. The black draws ink from the color so you''re going to know your office supply person by his first name, and helping to pay his child''s tuition. Expect an invitation to the kid''s graduation.

HP did a great job on this printer. It was less than $200 and it makes printing small pics to pass around so simple and easy. I take pics with my Kodak camera, insert the memory card into the printer, press print, and away it goes. No need to use a computer that''s the best part. Kodak software or the free HP software both work with this printer. Both are fine.

Photo quality is almost on par with regular grocery store prints from film. The printing itself takes a while and you have to wait for the ink to dry; however, compared to dropping film off and waiting to pick it up, this picture making system is far faster and more convenient.

Bottom line, if you have time & want the best picture quality possible, use film or print digitally with an online service. This device gives 90% of grocery store quality, but much faster and more convenient. It makes taking digital pictures and sharing pictures more fun.

As Robert Redford said in the film "Out of Africa" (speaking of a phonograph) "they''ve finally come up with something useful!" That is my opinion of the HP Photosmart 145. This is a dandy little workhourse that will generate countless 4 x 6 photographs from your digital camera with no hassle or fuss. The HP 145 is a small, tight little package that you can easily pack away and take along on trips.

The HP 145 really helps make the "digital darkroom" a reality, even during trips. I take mine on my boat together with a small laptop computer, and can generate high-quality 4 x 6 photos right on the spot, after taking shots with various digital cameras. The HP 145 has a built-in CF card reader and also reads various other popular media and you can easily print directly from the CF card or other media even without the laptop too--the printer will print out a nice little thumbnail "index" showing little minatures of the photos each bearing an index number. You can then select and print the full photo. This also means that you don''t need to bring a card reader along if you have your HP 145 since it functions as a digital media reader. Typically I will download my digital photos to my notebook computer''s hard disk using my HP 145, view the photos on the notebook screen for printing, and then print selected photos with the HP 145. Great fun!

My HP 145 installed effortlessly on my IBM Thinkpad notebook computer (IBM TP 600E) running Windows XP, and is now my main printer for 4 x 6 photos and of course is the only printer I take along on trips. It is great fun to go on trips, take photos, and then give friends nicely framed photos the next day, or later the same day. Frankly, I never realized how much fun it was to have a printer along on trips. Most printers nowadays are big and bulky. This one is not.

I went with the 145 rather than the 245, the latter being the same printer but with an LCD color display. I decided that I wouldn''t get 50 bucks worth of value out of the LCD display since a) I always bring my laptop along anyway since that is where I always download my CF card pictures to for storage on trips (that way you can re-use the CF card the next day); and b) the 145 has that neat index printing feature anyway, if you want to print without a computer. You decide. Either way, these are dandy little printers and I will likely never take another trip without bringing my HP 145 along. That is the hallmark of a truly useful product!

It''s a nice little unit, but not all that great. It does, however do a better job than most regular printers. By far, to my experience (current owner of 3 HP printers) HP mfg some of the best, if not THE BEST printers.

Now, back to the photosmart 145...the major plus is the ease of use (extremely easy) the ergonomics are well laid out and as a 1st timer on photo printers, I didn''t have to read the manual. The photosmart 145 will not earn 5 stars due to the limited features/functions that was incorporated...like: only 4X6 photo size and no option for wallet size prints; can''t do "portrait" prints to my option but only landscape, maybe can do on computer with bundled software and having to "rotate" pictures to coincide. Prints resulted in "cropped" pictures leaving the edges cutoff or "deleted" by 1/4" on top and bottom (border or borderless). You do have more options when operating prints from a computer and you can select many various features like print quality, tweaking colors and so forth. The print qualities are acceptable, even at "Best" mode, I can still comb through some tiny, tiny pixelated dithering effects on prints with the naked eye. I''ve printed better quality pictures from my other non-photo HP printer. Also, it is not wise to stick a media card full of pictures into the unit itself for direct printing unless you want to take wild guesses for what to print and not to print of certain pictures. The monochrome lcd screen tells you how many pictures and I.D. them by numbers only, so if you want to print ONLY that picture of your cute little niece in the middle of the pile somewhere, well, good luck...unless you have an Intel chip-equipt brain or alot of $$ to waste on photo papers. Overall, this is a nice little unit. I would only use for quick prints to distribute photos of my cars to my insurance companies, share photos with friends/colleagues and for municipal purposes. For the photo albums, I will either take my shots to Rite-Aid for quality prints or maybe invest some $$ for a more advance printer in the near future perhaps the 245 or 325...but wait, what am I complaining about? I got the photosmart 145 for FREE when I purchased my Leica D-LUX digital camera. Leica UPS''d it to me 3 weeks later...I guess I have nothing to lose but to share the experience with you before you fork out the $$.

Help!! I can''t get to bed and it''s 4AM! Too busy playing with my new HP 145. Best Christmas present I''ve ever gotten myself. As much fun as I had with it the first two hours after I hooked it up to the computer with a USB cable; it got even more fun. By hooking up to the computer, you can use the edit features and get even better pictures. The HP 145 is so simple to use and the results are amazing perhaps just a touch lighter (like washed out) than when I order my fotos from Ofoto but more than acceptable considering ease, fun, speed, and the ability to share photos immediately. And talk about transportable. It''s light, small and seems sturdy (although it IS an electonic device). I plan to take it with us on our visit with family in another state over the holiday week. What a kick we''ll have!!!!!
