This portable scanner is amazing. I have a huge collection of magazine clippings that I''ve kept in a binder for years. My plan was to scan each page, but it was taking forever on my flatbed and I burned myself out, so I stopped. Since I''ve gotten this scanner, I''ve pulled them out again. In a day and a half, I''ve scanned over 400 items. I am halfway done and it feels great. It literally takes three seconds to scan a full page. You press the scan button, run it down the page, and then press it again. The file saves on your SD card. From there, you can insert the SD card into your computer to rip the images off or plug the scanner into your USB port directly. You cannot scan and view while the scanner is plugged into your computer, but I didn''t find this troublesome at all. I simply scanned a huge chunk of paper and then plugged the scanner into my computer. Every image I scanned looks great. As of yet, none of the scans have come out blurry.

The software that comes with the VuPoint is called Abby FineReader, but I haven''t used it much. Instead, I open the scans in Photoshop, crop, and save. It''s very easy and the images look amazing. You can create a low or high quality scan, but even with the low quality scan, the images look pretty good. I believe you can save the scans in the Abby FineReader program as Microsoft Word docs, jpegs, or pdfs.

If you''re one of those people that holds onto a lot of paper and desperately wants to get rid of it, then this scanner was made for you.

I needed something to help me tackle the stacks of receipts spread throughout my house. This little scanner does the trick! I can quickly scan the receipts onto this wand, then plug it into my Macbook. The Image Capture app pops up and copies the files to my Desktop, where I can then sort them into appropriate folders. The version of the VuPoint Wand scanner I received (PDSST415VPS, see update below) saves the images directly to PDF files. If I have two (or more) scans that I want to combine into one, I just double-click the first page (to open it in Preview), turn on the "thumbnails preview" (on the View menu), then drag the second PDF file ON TOP OF the first page thumbnail. Preview will then merge the two PDF files together into one.

I''m guessing this model is discontinued and superseded by the PDF-capable model, but there''s no guarantee that you''ll receive the newer model.

This an incredibly powerful little product. It is extremely easy to use and the quality of the copies is excellent in black and white as well as in color.

It comes very handy when you need to copy legal documents and a copier is not available. The quality of the copy can be verified immediately if a laptop is available as well.

It works great when copying small portions (such as tables, graphs, pictures or cartoons)from very large books,that don''t fit on top of a copier.

When making scans of smaller books, or when the text is too close to the edge of the page, it is a good idea to slip a cardboard cover (from a binder for example) under the page, in order to give firm support to the rollers beyond the edge of the page.

I would recommend purchasing the optional hard case and a memory chip, since it has no buil-in memory.

The ability to scan to an SDHC card without using a computer is handy (another alternative would be to take a photo of the document or photo with a digital camera). I used it to scan the folks'' photo albums.

On the ST415-VPS model (not on the ST415-VP model), the resolution of 900dpi (maximum) is very good (higher than the -VP model and the 600dpi Wolverine mentioned below), and also PDF file output is supported. I purchased the -VPS model at Staples and the one sold here on Amazon might be the -VP model.

Cons:

* Since there are rollers on only one edge of the scanner, the "bumps" on the other edge tend to move whatever you''re scanning when the bumps hit the edge of the paper (see image attached). A similar model, the Wolverine PASS200 Handheld Portable Documents, Books and Photo Scanner (apparently manufactured by the same company) has rollers on both the leading and trailing edges.

* There is about 1" of dead space on each side of the scanner that is not scanned, which may be an issue when scanning a page from a book, i.e. if the left margin is less than an inch.

* Disposable Alkaline batteries are supposedly required; I used NiMH rechargeables and they worked OK but were drained after about 100 scans.

* There is no crop feature (even if the background is entirely white or black), so the resulting scanned image is always 8.5" wide, requiring use of computer software to crop them down to the desired size (say 4x6").

* Scanned photos were always a tad crooked (compared to a flat-bed scanner), also requiring computer software to rotate them into position if desired. Despite the single-roller design, I experienced less Fun-House-Mirror type distortion using this scanner compared to the Wolverine PASS200 Handheld Portable Documents, Books and Photo Scanner

* The JPG files that were output had about 2KB of extra padding at the end of each file, confusing and locking up some photo viewer programs.

* The resolution is not remembered across power-cycles, so must be reconfigured each time the unit is powered on (unless you always want to scan at the lowest resolution).

I.e., don''t expect it to do what a flatbed will do. Its intended purpose is to make it easy to scan receipts, newspaper or magazine articles, etc. My wife uses it for those purposes. I use it on packages of items we purchase to scan UPC codes, serial numbers, and to document other "needed" sections that are not suitable for scanning on a flatbed (and formerly documented using a digital camera). It is certainly useful on trips when it is out of the question to tote a flatbed scanner around.

The other reviews (as of this date) are much more "on point" and evidence realistic expectations of what this scanner is intended to do and, in general, reflect the experience we''ve had with ours.

This printer is much more than I expected. The network operation (wifi or ethernet) makes it very nice. You can also connect to it directly with USB, but I haven''t bothered with or tried that.

First, the caveats. There are specific drivers for printing on Windows and Mac OS X. Scanning software is provided for Windows only. Linux (at the point of this writing, at least) can neither print to nor scan from this all-in-one directly. I use all three operating systems within my home. Here''s how I have it working from each OS.

For printing:

Windows uses the drivers provided. They work fine.

OS X uses the drivers provided. They also work fine.

As for Linux, I''ve been unable to find any CUPS drivers that work. I found a post that mentioned it uses the same drivers as the Xerox Phaser 600B, but I couldn''t get those to work. Thus, my Linux machines use the printer via OS X. On the Mac, I''ve shared the printer with the network. Linux CUPS can communicate directly to this Postscript virtual printer and print. (Note that this sort of setup does not work as easily with Windows sharing the printer).

For scanning:

While there is software included for scanning on Windows, I don''t even bother with it. This printer supports scanning directly to an SMB share or to an FTP server. That means I can create an SMB share on Windows, OS X, and Linux, On the scanner, I can manually select the scan quality and which computer should receive the scan. The scanner will scan to a PDF file (or TIFF or JPEG) and deposit in the SMB share I selected. It''s great. It''s easy. And it requires nothing proprietary anywhere. The tricky part is setting this up. You do it by adding entries to the Address Book via the printer''s web interface which is easily accessible by pointing your browser to your printer''s IP address. The web interface actually lets you change a lot of settings. There is a lot of power in there and it''s an unexpectedly nice surprise. You don''t need any of the software they include. You can do everything and more from this web interface.

You can also have the printer email your scans to addresses you set up in the Address Book.

Faxing:

I haven''t tried faxing anything yet, but it seems like a fairly normal fax machine. Dial the number, scan and go.

And then the quality -it''s impressive. I read a lot of reviews for color lasers as I was looking to buy one and a common complaint among the cheaper ones seemed to be issues with page curl, banding, and grain. I have not seen any of these issues with this printer. Even a photo that I printed on plain paper, which I expected to look somewhat newspaper-like in quality, looked pretty good. Based on that, I''m fairly confident that if I had used glossy paper, I wouldn''t really be able to easily distinguish it from my old inkjet (but I have not tested this -no laser-safe glossy paper on hand -so don''t take that as fact). However, unlike an inkjet, a laser printer generally cannot do borderless prints. This printer definitely has hard borders at the 8.5"x11" edges, so if you do print a lot of photos, you may still want to stick to an inkjet. Personally, if I need to print photos, I just use a drugstore or discount store now.

Speaking of inkjets... I''ve owned at least 5 different inkjets in the past decade or so, all by different manufacturers. Like an idiot, I kept buying from different companies hoping that THIS TIME I''d get an inkjet where the ink didn''t evaporate, or didn''t need to clean the heads when I wanted to print, only to use up all the remaining ink during the 10+ minute cleaning cycle. Invariable, by the time it was finally ready to print, I had to replace an ink cartridge. It was maddening and I was spending so much money on ink. I don''t print every day, and I hated that EVERY TIME I wanted to print, I had to go through the cleaning process and replace at least one (but usually 3) color.

Now, I don''t worry about that anymore. This thing, like all lasers, uses toner. Toner doesn''t evaporate. It doesn''t have some unbelievably long cleaning cycle. It does take about 30 seconds to power up from deep sleep, but that''s lightyears ahead of my inkjet experience and far, far less frustrating. And this is the case whether it''s been 1 day or 1 month since the last print.

So overall, the only thing that disappoints me about this printer is its lack of Linux printing support. But I knew that when I bought it, and at least, as long as I own a Mac, printing from Linux is possible.

The Dell 1355cnw all-in-one arrived well in advance of the stated delivery date. However, I believe the machine I received by been perviously used, even though the box was sealed and the inside packaging was in place.

1. The toner cartridges were installed in the printer with the protective tape removed. The bumps during shipping had obviously left them well shaken and spilling.

2. The printed hard copy "User Guide" was missing.

3. The Mac installation disk was badly scratched, as if it had been dragged across a rough surface. I am a Mac user and the scratched disk kept ejecting. Finally I was able to copy the information from the disk to the desktop before it ejected spontaneously again.

Once up an running the 1355cnw produced great copies. I decided to keep it, in spite of it being "not new" ... rather than go through the hassle of a return.

One thing to note, and I should have been aware of it, is that there is no scanner application for Mac included with the machine. You get a scanner but no way to use it. Hard to believe Dell can still get away with this sort of piety discrimination in this day and age.

Not realizing it was not supposed to be included, I called Dell tech support & customer service to ask about the scanner app. The polite, but unintelligible, folks in India (I talked to several) didn''t know Mac user didn''t get a scanner app either ... and one fellow wanted to charge me $99 to analysis and solve the scanner problem. My advice is avoid Dell Customer & Tech support if you have trouble with accents.

I eventually bought a third party scanner app online from VueScan and am happy to report the the app and the scanner do a wonderful job in combination.

I am using this printer less and less because it requires so much interaction on the LCD keyboard to accomplish tasks that

are repeatable. I am wishing for a RECORD/MACRO button here.

Am using a $85.00 Cannon printer instead with less time involved and satisfying results.

I have had this machine for 8 months now as a business printer for my home office. It is used weekly but overall I am not pleased with my purchase.

When Black toner went out it was a "two page" warning. So two pages later out of another 30 and I couldn''t finish my proposal.

I replace the Black cartidge to the tune of $69.00!! and the color went out within two days!!

I am in a major metropolitan area and nobody carries these cartridges.

If you are out of color the manual says it will print in B&Wno such luck after spending an hour on this.

Overall this printer is great. I had no problems setting this up for both Windows and Mac. I am not using the Wireless functionality at this time though. I have it plugged directly into the router and both OSes have no issues. I did read the comments here in Amazon reviews and forced an IP address assignment instead of using DHCP.

There were a few problems related to the Windows setup not holding correctly but that maybe more related to the fact that the XP box is shared by my kids and the box in general has issues. My win7 and Mac Book (OSX10.7) both work just fine. The wife''s iMac also has no issues. I used the included driver CD for each and promptly had the system upgrade to the latest it found on the Dell site.

Prints quickly when warm up has completed. The warm up is a bit slow but still liveable. the copy function is fairly easy. Colors are accurate but I have not sent an photos to this yet. The stuff I have printed has been crisp and clear.

My only complaint is that the printer is not AirPrint compatible. I was able to over come this with a open source mac software. This is more my fault in not reading about the printer completely.

I am so happy with my new 5100. I got my new printer at Walmart for $99, after finding the ink cartridges I needed for my old Lexmark were going to cost me over $70 for color and black. I have not really been happy with my Lexmark print quality and the printer drank ink. I was very motivated to try the Kodak.

My first impression, out of the box, was the complexity of the install. I read through all the instructions before getting started and was very glad that I know something about computers. Kodak might consider making installation a bit easier, because it was quite a chore. I had problems getting the printer to print the page that calibrates the printer. I was glad for the printer paper that was included. I would have been in trouble without it.

Once installed, I started testing my printer. I printed one 4X6 photo, a 25 sheet report, 150 business cards, 6 pieces of sheet music and my tax forms for 2007. My ink is STILL showing at 100%. The print quality was excellent. I was able to print all my docs in draft mode and they look great. Draft mode on my Lexmark was grainy and looked washed out. I was so amazed at the crispness of the colors. Plus, printing is nearly twice the speed of my Lexmark. The pages shot out so fast, it startled me a bit.

The paper tray is annoying a bit. It is a fold out piece that fits up into the paper tray. If this piece is not folded out, your papers end up on the floor. Folded out, it seems very flimsy and some care must be taken to make sure it does not break. If you break it off, you will have nothing to catch your papers with.

The printer is a bit noisy. It is rather loud when it is printing and from time to time, just seems to come on by itself. I think it is cleaning the printer head.

I am also concerned about the cost of a replacement head. I says the head is permenant but no printer head has ever been created that lasts forever. The cost of a replacement head could be quite high, as with other models that have separate heads/inks (ie: cannon multijets) But with the ink costs so low, as long as the printer head lasts for a good number of pages, it will be so worth not paying $70 for ink. I will keep printing and see how it goes. If something changes, I will record it here but for now, I am totally happy with my new printer.

Overall, I give the Kodak 4 STARS!!!

So I turn on my printer this morning, had to print a couple of vacation pics real quick to give to someone... but once again, this printer refuses to print one of its colors... This time, the yellow seems to be "stuck".

This printer might be great for people who print every single day (although I''m not sure it makes a difference, just conjectures...). Here''s where I think the good reviews come from: when you first open the package and start printing, it does exactly what it''s advertised for: great photo printing quality on the photo paper in the dedicated tray, while descent printing of letter size document. The scanner is on par with the $99 Canons you can get, and the "photocopy" function that scans + print all in the push of a button is a great time saver for daily office work...

... BUT ...

If you don''t print for a couple of weeks, you can be pretty sure that the ink will get stuck and the printer will be unusable. Doing all the trouble shooting, head cleaning stuff from the provided maintenance software won''t help. The only thing that WILL help is to get a replacement print head from the tech support via phone. Granted, they''re very useful, friendly, and will ship you a new head at no cost, with extra ink cartridges for free... But you''ll have to do that every time you don''t print anything for more than a few days. To me, that qualifies as a buggy piece of junk not ready for production. From the other comments, and how easy it is to get a replacement from customer service, it''s obviously a known issue...

On top of that, on OS X, they''re some obvious USB connection problems on the software level... Checking ink levels will randomly disconnect all USB devices on your Mac, you have to plug/unplug your USB devices (such as keyboard... mouse... whatever''s the flavor of the day...) and hope you don''t have to restart...

So, yeah, when it works it''s a great printer.... but that''s 5% of the time you use this junk.

I have had this printer since January of this year and it has been nothing but problems. Takes too long to ever get started performing but that is not the worst problem. It never did scan right, then it just quit printing so I contacted the company for help and as now am waiting to get a printer head from them that is supposed to fix it but I have my doubts. Yes, the ink is cheap and your printer may even work for several months to a year. But the printheads on these things just break down. When I call Kodak for support they tell me this is normal. Kodak printheads "go bad," as Kodak''s tech support says, as if these things are like little cartons of milk. I''ve had to replace two in two years. And I use normal paper, Kodak ink, and print about 20 pages a month. This machine is a cheap piece of junk. You may save money on ink, but you''ll spend it on replacement printheads. Eventually you''ll spend it on a more reliable printer, which you should have bought in the first place.

I am going to give the basic problems I have encountered with this printer. There are many but this will be the last KODAK printer I will ever buy. 1st, I got it on sale for around $70. I thought it was a steal compared to others with these features. I have owned it for over a year now and it has been a nightmare. You constantly run out of ink. I print an average of 10 pages a week, sometimes a little more. This thing ran out of ink monthly, as if it were on a timer. I found out the ink replacement cartridges have a chip. WOW, way to go Kodak, you found a way to make a ton of back end money. 2nd biggest problem is that it prints certain fonts poorly. Forget about fine print, it is horrible. The biggest problem is the ink system delivery. It just doesn''t work well. After a few months it seemed to dry and cause problems.

Save yourself the time and effort. Don''t buy this machine. Used it isn''t worth the postage or gas to pick it up. Total garbage.

Kodak stick to camera''s and software. The software you get with the printer is good.

I have found that Memorex disk labels are very good and easy to set up. Allows you to use your own images or use their stock backgrounds. Add text in several ways, straight, circular top, circular bottom as well as some clip images are available.

I have tried Avery''s similar labels that you work from MS Word in their Mail & Labels section. I found Avery very hard to work with and far less customizable options.

My only negative is the matte finish. I personally would prefer a slick finish. But in the long and short run Memorex disk labels are the way to go for great looking jobs.

I use Memorex CD and DVD labels to label picture cd''s and dvd''s with picture slide shows on them. These labels are great because they let you pick the size of the label, small hole, larger hole or just a small label that goes around the opening in the cd. These labels are easy to print on and stick to the cd well. This is the second package of Memorex CD/DVD labels I have purchased and will buy more of these when I need to.

I use large quantities of matte CD labels for inkjet printing, and was very pleased with the Memorex brand for ten years: colors printed vivid and true, the labels were easy to apply and adhered well. But the most recent pack I bought proved completely different. Their new paper has an obvious grayish cast that takes color poorly (e.g., reds look brown, blues look gray), and the finished labels look dull, muddy, and cheap. This new paper is also so thin that ink bleeds into the adhesive layer, and the labels are prone to wrinkling during application, ruining the CD.

What was once an excellent product has been cheapened into one too shoddy to waste a cent on. I will never use Memorex labels again.

printer is a glorified paper weight unless ALL cartridges are full. Yes....this means you cannot print in black and white although the setting allow you to select black and white. Wait until you run out of ink in one color cartridge and you get a message that the printer will not print until it is replaced. Horrible business practices....people may buy for the initial lower price but once coerced to buy copious amount of unnecessary ink they will regret and not patronize lexmark.

I have had this printer for several months now and I have already had a lot of trouble. I chose this brand and model from personal recommendations and reviews from other sources. They were all very good, so it might be this is the only one to have problems. Somehow, I think not. I started receiving printhead error messages right away. It needed cleaning, but the cleaning instructions say to remove the printhead. Maybe everyone else knows how to do that, but I don''t. Then it said that the ink was very low even though they were extended use cartridges and I had printed very little. I installed four new Lexmark brand cartridges, one in each color. Then it said that the cartridges were missing. So I switched them out and the old ones said that the ink was very low. I took that to indicated that at least I knew how to install them. I called customer service and they immediately said that they would send a new printhead. That was my indication that the problem was not new to them. Unfortunately, I needed to print that very day. So I went out and bought a $30 HP. I highly recommend that! It works perfectly.

Addendum: It is now January. Here I am still with this blasted printer. I have learned to hate it! It frequently says that the cartridges are missing and I am looking right at them. The new printer head came and is installed. Maybe it works a third of the time, but you really can''t count on having a printer. Many times it just says that the printer is not connected to the computer. I think that Lexmark has a real trouble maker here. Please do yourself a favor and don''t buy this printer!

I can''t wait until we can cough up the cash for a new printer. I want to take this paper weight outside at a park and smash it up to pieces like they do in Office Space. Please do yourself a favor and save that money for something better than this piece of junk!

Brother 6994 Hard Carrying Case

This case is really big, much larger than I thought it would be. It didn''t fit the label maker I bought it for, but I have three other Brother label printers, so one of them will probably fit. There is a slot inside for the label maker and foam cutouts for accessories. The case is a nice way to keep the supplies together and out of the way. I only give it three stars because I think it is kind of ugly and overpriced for a hunk of plastic and some foam. This is no Pelican case. Even so, I will eventually be buying another one when I find the right one for the label maker I had intended to keep in this case. (I will check the Brother website first this time, and get the proper item number.)

Edited to add: As I mentioned, I did have other Brother label printers than the one I''d hoped would fit in this case. It fits perfectly the model number PT-1950. Surely it fits others too, but if you have that model, this case is the right one.

Well, my printer just arrived today. Though it took a few days for the order to process, it only took 2-days to ship.

PROS:

This is a nice fairly compact laser printer. It''s easy to set up. Print quality is clear and has nice contrast. When I bought this printer it was only $69.99 with free shipping, but I see now in less than a week later it''s gone up to $89.99 + Shipping costs. For the price I paid I''d say this was a great deal.

CONS, but not a deal breaker:

I would''ve given it 5-stars except for a few points: 1) No USB cable included. It seems to be a fairly common practice with companies these days, but it''s annoying. These cables don''t cost that much (Belkin high speed USB for $4.95 on Amazon) but it''s an inconvenience to have to order it separately. And because they don''t cost much, how much is any electronics company saving vs. keeping their customers happy? 2) The printer is fairly noisy even in standby mode. However, it eventually goes into power save mode when not in use for long and that is completely noise-free. 3) Printing quality, though excellent, is not as good as my 10-year old Brother laser printer specifically when dealing with grayscale. These three points are things to consider, but I do believe they are only worthy of loss of 1-star.

This is a great printer for a small or home office that doesn''t require high-output printing.

After six years of faithful heavy-duty service, my beloved HL 1440 gave up the ghost, and I decided to replace it with the Brother HL 2220, which cost 2/3rds what I paid for the HL 1440 years ago.

Although the new machine is faster than the 1440, with more standard memory, it is smaller, lighter, and feels considerably less substantial.

Set up (OSX 10.4.11) was an absolute dream. In no more than five minutes I was up and printing. The set-up guide cautions to link directly to the computer, and not through a non-powered hub as I was doing, and on top of that my computer only accepts USB 1.0 and not 2.0. Yet the computer and the printer immediately recognized one another, and communication between the two is quick and responsive.

Print quality is outstanding, and although some folks have complained of the noise, I find mine to be very quiet. I do notice that envelopes come through with some wrinkles in the corner, and I''m going to try experimenting with different feed orientations to see if that helps.

Brother has decided to cheap out a bit on the 2220. Unlike the 1440, there is no visual indicator on the paper tray to indicate how much paper is left. Instead you are left with a top-mounted light that will come on once the paper tray is empty, but what good is that going to do you? How many pennies did Brother save by doing that?

I''ve never found a PDF file I couldn''t open, view, and print with Preview, but for some reason Brother''s instruction manual would only open properly in Adobe Reader.

PROS: Dirt cheap. Set-up is a breeze. Great print quality. Relatively quiet.

CONS: Feels insubstantial. Fussy documentation. Some wrinkles in business envelopes.

I don''t regret buying the HL 2220, but I''ve got a feeling I''m going to be missing my old HL 1440.

This is the third Brother monochrome laser printer I have owned. I was really happy with my first two and so when I needed a new printer, I bought the HL 2220 immediately. I wish I hadn''t. There are two serious problems with it. The first is that it is very noisy and it takes a long time (15 minutes or longer) to go into sleep mode. At this point, I simply turn the printer off when not actually printing. The second (and this is more serious) is that it generally does not print an entire document. Instead, it simply stops after a few pages and I have to hit the resume button. This is more than just an annoyance as it only prints part of a page in the first print job before resuming and printing out the document. Thus it wastes a considerable amount of paper. I updated the firmware from the Brother website but it did not help. Frankly, it is not that hard making a laser printer that actually works and I am disappointed that Brother did a poor job with this printer. It does, however, do a nice job of printing text as did all my other Brother printers. I''ll update this if I ever get the problem fixed.

I bought this printer after reading the reviews and figured I would just deal with the ''noise'' if it made any I will say 100% that I don''t know what the other reviewers are referring to. The printer makes a bit of noise when first turned on (assuming to warm up the toner or something) but after maybe 10-20 seconds it quiets down and doesn''t make a peep. I did how ever upgrade the firmware, but it wasn''t making any noise prior to this either. It definitely is much quieter than the HP ink jet that shakes the entire desk when printing now that''s annoying! I would definitely recommend this printer, and would most certainly buy another one especially for simple prints that don''t require color.

I can''t praise this printer enough. I haven''t owned an inkjet printer, so maybe I''m easily impressed. But from the moment I brought it home, this printer has exceeded my expectations.

The S300 is quite small, so it fit easily into my (somewhat cramped) office. It was very easy to hook up to my computer and install the drivers on Windows. The written instructions were clear, and the driver installation program guided me through the head calibration task in no time.

After that, everything just worked. I printed out a few color images and web pages just for fun, and have since used it quite often to print out verious tax-related documents and letters. The print quality is impressive, even on plain paper. The printing speed is fine for most documents. And the little extras like automatic power on/off make the printer a joy to use.

I expected to have to pay twice what I did to get a printer I was happy with. At around $100, this printer is astoundingly good.

A word of warning: the ink cartridges for this printer are quite small, so if you''re looking for a home office printer, you should probably get something more industrial-stength. However, if you only need to print a few pages every now and then, but still want reasonable print quality, then the S300 is ideal for you.

setup was easy. print beautiful, quick. price great. after having lexmark printers, i shopped with regard to replacement ink prices. canon replacement ink prices seemed reasonable. after purchase, i saw the ink tanks were tiny (9ml black, 5mlx3 color). my old lexmark tanks don''t indicate volume, but they look to be 3 times larger than the canon. with the lexmark, i was getting 6 months(about 1000 pages) of printing. with the canon, i used up the black ink after only about 100 pages (half of them cd covers) in 16 days. print quality was set at "standard"and did not "clean heads" or do other ink-wasting activities. i got far less than the 300 pages the manual says you''ll get, esp. when you consider the number of pages that were plain cd covers. i used the tank until it faileddid not replace when the warning came up (worked for about 20 pages). i haven''t done much color printing yet, only a few photos and mixed documents. i''m sure the color won''t last long, either (manual says 170 pages). i recommend the printer, but be sure to have replacement ink tanks on hand.

The Canon S300 outperforms most printers costing twice the price. I checked out numerous models from various manufacturers and I bought the lowest priced printer of all, the S300. The post-it name badges feed easily through my laser printer. I have not experienced any jamming, which is always a potential problem with label products. (I did not try them in an inkjet. Inkjet printings are prone to run when wet, so be aware of that if you intend to use these on an inkjet.)

The downloadable templates worked perfectly in Microsoft Word.

The labels are easy to pull off the back and adhere well to clothes, even tolerating about 2 or 3 changes in positions (after that they begin to curl).

Therefore, it really comes down to personal preference. I''ve had this unit for a little over 2 weeks now and have given it a full, and I mean FULL workout. I''ve printed a whole ream of 28lb paper with various text, graphics, etc, along with 20 or so color photos on laserjet photo paper and continue to be impressed with the output. I have made all sorts of copies and sent/received probably 10 faxes (through MagicJack, no less!), as well. All with only one issue....

That dang annoying paper curl. This thing just loves to curl the paper, no matter what type of paper, no matter what type of printing. There is even a setting in the setup menu on the unit, called "Reduce Paper Curl", which supposedly reduces the fuser heat, but it makes no difference.

The GOOD news is, it''s replaceable under warranty! I spent a bit on the phone with HP Business Support (VERY IMPORTANT! You MUST call Business Support@800-334-5144! HP "Total Care" knows nothing about this printer and will just keep transferring you back into their same queue over and over); and was informed that there were an early batch of these units sent out with fusers that were out of spec. The way to tell which fuser you have is to open the back access panel and look at the foam rollers. Supposedly the "new" fusers have orange rollers, and the bad ones(like mine) have black foam rollers.

Another good piece of news is, these come with a standard next day, on-site warranty. I have a tech coming out tomorrow to replace said bad fuser assembly. The Business Support agent I spoke with, while clearly not American, was MUCH more knowledgeable and willing to help than the standard Total Care agents. I could also understand him better. In the end, an extremely frustrating experience with the non-business support group, ended up morphing into a somewhat pleasant resolution.

I will update the review notes with the outcome tomorrow once I have the unit replaced. I know I won''t be able to change the star rating, but even with the curl issue, it''s still a solid 3.5-4 stars. Especially considering there are later models released without the curl issue.

***UPDATE #1***

They are over-nighting the fuser assembly to me and the tech will be here between 10 and 4 to install it. The on-site tech just called and said that if I was so inclined, I could try the swap myself, or if it''s more than I care to delve into, then he''d be happy to come do the swap. I''ll check and see once it gets here tomorrow.

***FINAL UPDATE***

Unfortunately, the new fuser did not completely rectify the paper curl problem. It did appear to lessen the curl a bit, however. But, I guess Ill live with it. I will note, the on-site HP tech was wonderful! He was friendly, knowledgeable and very professional and was very apologetic that the fuser swap did not fix the problem. We even spent a bit, looking into the paper path, to see if the rollers were causing the curl issue and not so much the fuser. It wasnt, by the way. If it were the paper path, the curl would be in the opposite direction. He gave me his cell and said to give him a call if there''s anything he can do to help out in the future. Short of the agonizing experience I spent initally with the Total Care helpdesk, this has been a very good experience.

***The FINAL, FINAL UPDATE***

ON a whim, I decided to go back into the menu and re-enable "Less Paper Curl" and that with the combination of the fuser replacement, has netted usable results. The page is still curled, but it''s definitely not as bad as it was, pre-fuser change.

We purchased this product 4 months ago for our small office. The main goal was to allow scanning directly to email so that we could send paperwork to remote staff easily. That functionality in this printer is very good. Then, there are some issues that could cause us to think twice about buying this product again.

Pros:

1. Scan to email works very well.

2. Color print quality is acceptable. Useful for making our color proposals stand out.

3. Network capability allows all of our staff to print to it fairly easily.

Cons:

1. This thing is HUGE. It replaced a multi-function black and white laser in our office. It is more than twice the size, including height. For the size, you would think you could store more paper inside its tray. Nope.

2. Paper feed tray is constantly falling off. Often jams. Periodically will jam so tightly that we can''t remove original document ends up tearing or getting shredded. Very poorly designed.

3. Replacement cartridges are very expensive. It seems that this pricing is standard for color laser printers.

4. Printer decides to calibrate itself randomly. This could be right in the middle of when you are using it, which means you have to stand around for a few minutes or come back. Calibration is LOUD. Everyone in our 3000 sq. ft. office can hear it and it is inside a corner office.

We did a lot of research before buying this multifunction printer. It''s unfortunate that we are disappointed. I''m not sure products in this space are mature yet. There may not be too many others on the market yet to pick from that are much better. We would probably not buy this one again given our current experience.

I was wary of purchasing this product due to the reviews on both Amazon and other sites. However, I believe that most of the people giving bad reviews to this machine really did not set-up the machine correctly. If you check out the cnet or pcmag reviews, the Color Laserjet MFPs, both the 1300 and 2300 series are getting editors choices for the combination of speed, ease of use, great looking prints, and quality. As well as economy, the toner cartridges are a tad expensive, but buy the black one in a double pack (like getting the second 75% off) as you will go through this quickly. The color ones last a surprisingly long time.

With a correct set-up this has been the best recent purchase our office has made. The scan to email feature is the best. Even a novice can scan to their email now. Saves many headaches or formatting, saving, configuring, etc... in either Adobe or the software that comes with the printer. And no, there is no way to get authentication to work. But, there is a great workaround that not many people know about. Try your ISPs smtp server. As you are on the network already, many ISPs (Optimum for example) have a non authenticated "mail.optonline.net" smtp server that any customer may use. For this purpose, it is also incredibly quick with the upload speeds and makes for a very easy scan to email. For the most part, if you are using an authenticated outside source for your mail, you might be able to take advantage of this. If you use internal email sources, and cant figure out how to get it to work on your server, maybe you should not be configuring your own server then.

Overall, another feature that is handy is the fax mechanism. This MFP scans your entire fax in first, then tries to send it all at once. I had a 7400 series Officejet (about the same price as this laser a few years ago) that had the worst fax machine in it. It would error in the middle of scanning the pages in, making situations where the other party gets 2 out of 4 pages and then you have to send everything over again. Regardless, the fax on this machine is very well set-up by hp.

Copy is fast, the glass for the copy machine is small only letter size instead of legal size, but the machine is too narrow to get legal size copies in anyway.

The paper handling is superb as well. The inclusion of the manual feed bypass on front makes printing items such as quickbooks checks, forms, preprinted letterhead, etc... a simple and easy task. Very well thought out design in my opinion.

Overall very good printer. I give it 4 stars for one reason alone, the toner cartridges are expensive at a yield of 3500-2800 pages for an hp business laser. The more expensive next model CM3500s get around 7000 pages yield out of one cartridge for the same price. But overall, the machinery is great for the volume of about 6-8000 sheets per month we print.

Also HP has a promotion where you trade in an old printer (any model, and manufacturer, doenst have to work) and get $150 off this printer by mail in rebate. Makes this a really great deal in my opinion.

I needed a copy machine for my school work, and my husband wanted a machine that could auto-scan and send the image through e-mail. We preferred color printer with laser-jet.

I had been searching for a while. Most of all-in-one printers are using jet-ink, which we don''t like because of the cost of ink. I know "Brother" has several models that fits our needs, but I learned that they seem to take too much electric energy. "Cannon" is one of my favorite brand, but they do not have full colors.

Lucky my husband is a computer engineer, so he knows what the review was talking about, and he could figure out how to install correct program so that we could use all the features. We both love the e-mail function! It''s very handy and save a whole bunch of trouble! Now I can do my school work easily, and he could do his business more efficiently!

I gave only 4 stars due to the issue of net-working. It took a while for my husband to figure out how to set up the e-mail feature. If you do not have someone who knows how to set up correctly, it would actually frustrate you a little bit.

I am very gratified by this purchase but also retroactively frustrated. We had a fax ($900), a monochrome laser printer ($1,400), a monochrome copier ($1,100) and a flatbed scanner ($800) in our small business office. Each was the best of their sort by contemporary ratings and our own experience, but each -except the scanner -was as large as this multi-function printer. The scanner was short and of course flat, so it was less volume, but it took up more working surface than any of the others.

This unit does each job better than those original sepaarates and it provides color capability to boot. Color copies and color prints both look like professional photo prints when done on the appropriate paper.

Very satisfactory. Highly recommended even at the combined price we paid for separates. Over $4,000. Now check the price we actually paid for this compact wonder. Amazing.

I do feel the message was an error caused by the printer no recognizing that I replaced the cartridge. Unfortunately, an additional message was displayed on the printer indicatinig that usiing expired ink could nullify the warrenty. So, ALWAYS CHECK EXPIRATION DATE ON PACKAGING BEFORE OPENING

I have a C7280 Photosmart printer and it utilizes 6 of these cartridges. While the print quality is incredible so is the price. I wish the cartridges were bigger and less expensive. It seems like an extraordinary waste of resources to pack such a tiny amount of ink into this package. It seems quite obvious that HP cares more about ridiculous profits than the environment.

Now that''s out of the way, I highly recommend the HP 02 color (and black) series inkjet cartridges. Unlike competitors designs, the print-head is built-in, so you get a new one every time you change the cartridge. Also, although the cartridges hold less than half the 13ml of ink you get with the new Canon "8" series, the ink used to clean is actually recycled back into the cartridge, so there is less waste.
