HP Scanjet 4890 Photo Scanner (L1952A#B1H)

HP Scanjet 4890 Photo Scanner
  • Up to 4,800 x 9,600 dpi resolution with 48-bit color
  • Built-in adapter for up to 16 slides, 30 negatives, 4 medium format frames, or 1 4x5 film
  • Remove scratches, restore faded color, and correct red eye with easy software
  • Copy, enlarge/reduce 10 to 2,000 percent; Hi-Speed USB 2.0
  • Adjustable lid accommodates bulky items

If you intend to use the scanner for digitizing 35mm slides, be aware that this scanner has some problems. If you load the slide holder with 16 slides, the preview scan may only recognize 8 or 10 of these, and you have to try to manually recover the others. This may or may not be successful. This is especially a problem with slides that are relatively dark, but the same slides were scanned without difficulty by my old Epson scanner.

A second major problem is that the preview scans present as tiny thumbnail images which are too small to properly evaluate or modify using image editing software. I could find no way of enlarging the thumbnails, and the online HP technician confirms that there is no way to enlarge them. I regard this as a serious problem. At least for me the scanner does not function satisfactorily as a slide scanner, (the principle reason for which I bought it), and I have returned the unit.

I really need an HP scanner because that is the only brand that does a good job on 3-D objects. My old HP 5300-C scanner was a wonderful device with great software. I finally wore it out after 5 years and 100,000 scans.

The 4890 was the only HP I could get my hands on. As far as I can tell, the scanner works great, but the software is a DISASTER! You can not set up this scanner to scan the same area over and over again without wasting a great deal of time doing a preview and setting your scan area each and every time. What this means is that there are now two stepst to scanning an item rather than one. This is not trivial as it more than doubles the amount of time needed to scan an object, a very serious flaw if you have a lot of scanning to do.

I went to HP''s live chat to ask if I could use the old 5300c software to run this unit, but was told that would not work. If you only have to scan an item once in a blue moon this scanner will work fine for you as the time wasting software will not impact you very badly, but if you do a large amount of scanning, you must avoid this scanner due to the incredibly poorly written and inefficient software. Unfortunately, due to the amazingly bad software, this unit is going back for a refund.

On a side note, unlike other reviewers, I had no problem loading the software and getting the scanner up and running.

Another complaint about this scanner is that it is actually a bit slower than the five year old 5300c model. It hesitates briefly several times during the process of scanning. The difference in scan time is not great, maybe an extra 10 seconds per page, but combined with the disasterous software issue it all adds up to a lot of wasted time.

Again, the software is so bad that this has to go back for a refund I am sad to say. I had high expectations for a $200 scanner from HP after having such great success with my prevoious one.

Don''t by this scanner if you expect anything close to 4800 dpi.

I bought this scanner with the intention to scan my slides.

I was not able to get the resolution I expected from a 4800 dpi scanners.

The result was only marginally better than the result I got

by projecting the slides and taking images using my 3 MPix digicam.

By using the "slanted edge" method I measured a resolution

that rather looked like a 1200 dpi scanner.

Also when using the slide adapter the result become even

worse since the slides become more out of focus.

Got no help from HP support. The reaction to my measurements

was basically "that''s the way it is"

Also: The software user interface is kludgy and hard to work with.

This is not what I expected from HP, my previous experience of

HP-products is quite good.

I just bought this scanner today to replace a 5 year old SUPER great HP6300C scanner that broke.

I had purchased an Epson 4490 and what a P.O.S. that was. It never did work...made a terrible racheting sound on my first scan and Best Buys told me it was defective. It was cheap light and felt like it was made out of cardboard! Well, anyway I today bought this HP which I should have to begin with, but I read bad reviews on it and good on the Epson. Well, just like you can''t believe critics on movies (when they say bad it is good, etc), you can''t believe some of these reviews on the HP scanner since I found the scanner to be great with all the same features of my old one. My only complaint is that it takes more steps to complete now than the exact same scanning I used too make on my old 6300C, but not much. Why HP had to tinker with the Precision Scan Software of the old 6300C is beyond me! The 4890 is quiet, and fairly quick and makes good scans of photos which is why I bought it.

Software is easy to use, but not as quick in the preview mode as the old 6300C. A little clunky there, but still works well. I like being able to alter the scanned image with all the color sharpness contrast tools BEFORE saving it. Plus, I have it saved to Adobe Photoshop just in case there is more tweaking.

All I wanted to say is this is a nice scanner! I even got on line and had a live chat with a woman from HP and she helped answer some questions. Good Job HP with the tech support. Don''t buy that crappy Epson...go with HP. This makes my 3rd HP scanner in a little over 10 years. I use the scanner ALOT. Sure got moneys worth out of the other 2. I scan thousands of photos each year sell them on eBay.

I bought this scanner to digitise my old slides. The scanner however cannot do the job : the scanned slides are out of focus (even more with the slide adapter) and the colours are dreadfull (blacks). These cannot be corrected in Photoshop.

The software is also not userfriendly (selection and deselection of frames, frame selection not corresponding with final scan, settings that change in between scan...). I used a cheap Afga scanner before that had much better scanning software...

Scanning one slide with 4800 dpi resolution takes about half an hour...

My advise : do not buy this high resolution scanner if you intend to use it for scanning slides and films...

I learned the hard way that my Canon printer needs TWO black ink cartridges -226 BK and 225 PGBK. Apparently, one black (226) is used exclusively for images, and one (225) exclusively for text. When my PGBK cartridge ran dry, I thought the BK cartridge would take over, since it was still 75% full. Nope.

Now that I''ve purchased this combo pack, convenient as it is, the BK cartridge is gathering dust next to my printer, unused.

Buy Canon CLI-226 4546B001 Ink Tank-Black Now

I have always stuck with OEM ink, because the results and reliability are worth the extra cost to me (plus printer manufacturers are making it increasingly difficult to use non-OEM solutions).

However, it is beyond dumb to see the combos that Canon is offering for the new line of ink jet cartridges. In this case Canon gives you four color cartridges, but all of their current PIXMA printers take five or six to get the Pigment Black or Gray cartridges you''ll have to buy them separately and at a higher price. Plus this combo includes 50 sheets of paper that not everyone needs (I have plenty already). Perhaps Canon should ditch the paper and lower the list price of this combo by eight dollars the amount this CLI-226 combo was increased over the CLI-221 combo it replaced.

BTW, the other package deal offered by Canon (PGI-225 BK/ CLI-226 C,M,Y 4 Pack Value Pack (4530B008)) is another strange combo that includes Pigment Black and three colors, but does not include Black or Gray.

Sorry, but it makes no sense whatsoever to not offer at least a 5-cartridge refill kit for a printers that needs 5 or 6 different inks except that it lines Canon''s pockets a bit more than it should. A kit that substituted Pigment Black for the paper would make more sense than this or as I said earlier just get rid of the paper and lower the price significantly.

I also have to knock off a star because the new cartridges are opaque, which may have been done to thwart refillers but also prevents users from checking the ink level themselves.

Edit July 2011: When my Pixma MX860 printer recently failed I was looking at upgrading to the Canon PIXMA MG8120 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (4504B002). But in large part due my dissatisfaction with the ink cartridges of the new Pixmas I went with a refurbished Canon PIXMA MP990 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (3749B002) which uses the previous generation CLI-221 cartridges.

I agree with most of the people that have written reviews. Believe it or not.....it costs less at times to purchase a new printer that comes with in than buying the ink alone. Our stores have this model on sale all the time. Actually ran into a guy the other day who had like 6 of them in his shopping cart and said.....yeah buying the printer for the ink.

So, what do you do with all the printers? I guess they all go to land fill, just what we need. Canon we like your product, so give us a break on the ink.......

I could not find this ink anywhere. Back to amazon my trusted vendor. Ink arrived in two days just in time to save my

project. This is good ink its just too small of a container. My printer takes six cartridges of ink. Result is great photos

and printingits just that it uses too much ink to be in such small containers. I have told Canon but they aren''t listening.

So if you buy a Canon MG6120 printer, copier, scanner -get a suitcase of spare ink.

This ink tank works in the Canon PIXMA MG6120 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One Printer (4503B002). It''s easy to install. The other day I decided to research Canon''s ChromaLife 100+ ink & was surprised to learn that prints made with this ink will last over 100 years!

This ink tank is easy to install in my Canon printer. The ink doesn''t run when it gets wet & the prints should last over 100 years. I''d say those are great reasons for using Canon ink in my Canon printer.

Thought I''d mention that the ink is in a black tank so you can''t see the ink level. I get printer messages that the ink tank might be empty; I don''t replace the tank until my printer won''t print or the print quality suffers.

(Even if the printer shows a ''red x'' above the ink tank, I''ll press ''ok'' to get rid of the ink status message & continue printing. As long as I''m printing text I don''t worry too much about quality as long as it''s readable).

If photo quality suffers, I will replace whichever tank is necessary.

They came in a short 3 days which was good, But when I opened the mail package there were 2 color cartridges wrapped in clear plastic. there was ink inside the mail package and I got ink all over my hands when I took the 2 cartridges out. Also there was ink inside the clear plastic wrap for one of the cartridges. I emailed the seller, Vivamart. Their answer to me was that this can happen sometimes in the shipping process. They have told me they will replace the leaking cartridge. So this is acceptable. I have one good cartridge to use while the leaking one is being replaced.

I admittedly never bought from this seller before, but I thought since Amazon backed them I would get a good product. I spent $19.65 on this color cartridge. I put it in today & printed a total of eight pages of color pictures with black text. My printer immediately started blinking a warning to change my cartridge. I checked my computer thinking there was an error. Nope, after only eight pages printed, the color cartridge is empty. Eight pages of print for $19.65?! What a waste!

I had a hard time finding the HR-101, so I bought HP''s Premiere Choice Paper (98 brightness) and it did not come close to the quality of the HR-101. After searching some more, I finally found it on Amazon.

It''s fast. relatively resistant to jamming, easy to set up, and has less skewing than most automatic sheet feeders. It''s also very compact and reliable. Highly recommended. I have used PaperPort/Visioneer scanners for close to a decade, and loved them all. For some reason, though, their code gets worse and worse and their "support" simply does not exist.

For some reason, in order to install a new scanner, you have to remove all vestiges (even hidden ones) of the prior scanner software and drivers. Forget installing TWO scanners (I have both a Visioneer flatbed and a Strobe XP 450).

Is it too much to ask to get support for an item that costs $650?

I use this in a law office/buiness setting with an IBM laptop running Windows 2000. The problem is if I do not scan something for about an hour, the scanner loses its connection and you have to turn it off and back on to get it to scan. A royal pain in the you now what since the power button is on the back. I called Visioneer support and they said "That is the way it works if you do not use it it loses connection." I think that is BS. My HP did not. If someone else has problem and a fix, let me know. Otherwise, our office just nixed buying 50 more of these since I was the test case.

I love this scanner...it is fast, generally bullet proof. There are a few weird things about it, like it doens''t like to be plugged into UPS. It prefers to be plugged into a stip of the wall.

It does lose connection occasionally (not often). The fix is to power off the scanner and turn it back on with the switch onthe back. It takes 10 seconds...MAX.

This last purchase from Amazon however the scanner on this order I received was an older version of the scanner, which leads me to believe it had been sitting in the warehouse for a long time.

Be VERY careful when purchasing anything from Visioneer. I have owned a visioneer scanner for about 4 years, and when I upgraded my PC to Vista, was shocked to learn that Visioneer considers it "out of production" and therefore no new drivers are available. In short, I now own a boat anchor. If you think you might EVER upgrade your computer, you might be better off purchasing from a company who supports their equipment. By the way, I had to call a 900 number to find out that the product is no longer supported I actually had to PAY to get ripped off.

I ordered this scanner to enhance a "less paper" office. We have 5 Canon DR-2050c''s for desktop use as well as a Xerox copier that can scan bulk projects to the server. However, the Canon DR-2050C was proving to be not enough capacity for the volume of scanning our secretary was performing. This HP was the right price from Amazon for the speed, volume and ease of use it provided. I highly recommend this product. A side note, our original model made a high pitched screeching noice when purchased. HP was fantastic, overnighted a whole new top half of the scanner to us and told us to keep the old for parts! Not too bad for service from HP!

We have had this scanner for 1 year and it came up with an error message that our computer tech cannot fix so it sits on the desk and gathers dust. The Xerox Phaser 3300MFP has delivered more than I expected at a very reasonable cost given the system''s capabilities.

1) Physical installation is a snap-just remove it from the carton, plug cables into the only places they fit, remove the tape that holds doors closed, insert the toner cartridge, unlock the scanner mechanism and it''s done. In our case we also added the second 250 sheet paper tray which equally simple.

2) Software installation on a Windows-7 Professional platform was limited to inserting the CD-ROM, telling it to use a network connected printer, and picking the printer from a displayed list.

3) Setting up the printers firmware uses the web interface which worked exactly as expected and offered no problems that an occational quick look into the on-line manual failed to cure.

4) EVERY feature worked as documented, including scan to Email, scan to Network, and FAX forward to Email.

The web interface can be a bit difficult for people with little or no ability to actually read and follow instructions. But if you open the manual in one browser window and the machine''s web interface in another and then accept that Xerox knows more about their machine than you do... it all works fine.

Some features are especially nice. One very useful one is that it you can put a stack of pages in the feeder and then scan them directly to a folder on your computer in one of several formats. Another useful feature, especially for small business types, is that incoming faxes can be set to automatically forward to your email as a PDF file. This is great because if an order or contract is sent by fax you can get it on your Blackberry or iPhone when away from the office.

The only "fault" I have with it is the machine''s control panel. It uses a telephone keypad for all data input which makes things like entering Email addresses and mixed-case passwords sluggish. Perhaps Xerox will put a better human interface on the next generation.

Otherwise... a very good product that demonstrates good value.

Buy Phaser 3300MFP/X Black and White Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax Now

I had been buying the Xerox Phaser 3200MFP/N Multi-Function Network Printer/Fax/Scanner/Email for branch offices I support but was very disappointed in the quality and cost per page. So when Xerox came out with the 3300 MFP I was interested in seeing how it compared.

While the part number maybe close, the machines are completely different. The 3300 MFP is more rugged, with a real paper tray (optional add on paper trays available), a lower cost per page, and better paper handling. It offers all of the features you would expect on a modern laser, scan to e-mail, network scanning, printing, and faxing. I have purchased 5 of these so far (now 10). The initial firmware these some of the units shipped with was buggy and as noted by another reviewer the Web user interface (UI) did not work in IE and other browsers. However, Xerox soon corrected that problem with a significant firmware update that corrected the UI and even required new drivers on the work stations.

Setup and administration was very strait forward via the Web interface (nearly identical to any other Xerox copier). You can import address books for fax and e-mail, and tweak all of the default settings. I have had no complaints from the users and with 9+ (now 14+) months of usage under there belt, these printers continue to perform well.

Other vendors may have similar products, but one area Xerox has really shined is there onsite technical support. While no of my 3300''s have required onsite services, Xerox has always come through for me on other units I have installed. (The onsite warranty is an optional add on.) (I have had one ADF feeder that had some problems jamming but they were quick to repair it)

So where does this unit come short? It does not support SSL for SMTP which means if you use Gmail or some other vendor that requires SSL for SMTP you are going to have trouble. One work around to this is setting up a computer running STUNNEL () a free open source project that you can use to proxy through. The other feature lacking is LDAP support for a centralize e-mail address list. The only other "weakness" it has is a limited darken/lighten range when making copies. It has this feature but it does not have the same range that a full blown copier has.

Bottom line if you are looking for a solid, cost effective, multifunction unit, in my opinion, this is it. (Revised this review because it does support duplexing which I had incorrectly stated it did not. My review is other wise still the same after more than a year of usage.)

The print and scan quality are good. Interface and usability are bad. This device gets a one star rating because it does not do what it advertises it can do. Network scanning is only available via PC (not much of a surprise) although they don''t tell you that when you buy the thing. It also claims that it can scan to email over the network. It really can''t, not if your email server requires SSL, like 90% of email servers do. Duh! None of these limitations are listed anywhere, and the only way to discover that the scan to email doesn''t work with SSL is to call tier 2 technical support to discover it. If you buy it and can''t get it to work within a week, it isn''t you. The machine doesn''t work. Rather, I should say that it does not work as advertised, hence the one star rating.

Want Phaser 3300MFP/X Black and White Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax Discount?

I''ve only spent about 6 hours with my new xerox phaser 3300 mfp and I''m very disappointed. It has a web page that is built into the machine. I have no trouble accessing it, but it is not compatible with any web browsers. I''ve tried FireFox and IE8 on a XP machine and FireFox and Safari on a mac. The navigation buttons disappears after you switch pages and the images don''t load until you hold your pointer over them. It is just flaky as can be. Then, to make things worse, when I do attempt to change a setting, I get an "error on page" warning in IE8. So, I can''t change settings.

The manual is also full of errors. It is like it was written for a different machine and pasted into this machines manual and not fully updated to be accurate with this machine. It tells me to go to areas in the browser accessible control panel that simply don''t exist. If Xerox reads this, look how it tells you to set SMTP in the browser based interface and then look at the reality of where the SMTP settings are.

I called Xerox and he confirmed the errors in the instructions and confirmed that it isn''t compatible with hardly any "new" browsers. He said it worked with a lot of outdated versions of popular browsers. He had me download OPERA rather than reverting to an older version of IE. Now it works fine, but I still have to figure it out without much help from the manual as it is not written with any degree of accuracy.

We would highly recommend all the Phaser Printers. We own 6 printers (all are color except this one). We use this as a back up printer and mainly as a fax machine.

The solid ink printers are unreal in the quality of print. The laser printers are good too. Supplies are pricey though! We also would recommend that you only buy OEM parts. We ruined 2 printers by buying supplies that were not XEROX. You may find it cheaper to keep buying a new printer versus the supplies too?

I bought this toner from Toner Eagle. It''s my third cartridge from them (various color purchases). I strongly urge anyone who prints alot of pages to switch to laser. My cost per sheet is .03 versus up to .60 with inkjet.
