All of this is great, but the user interface is the icing on the cake. Most scans can be initiated on the scanner by a simple selection of a scanning mode from a menu system followed by pressing either the simplex or the duplex scan button on the face of the scanner. This will automatically launch HP''s much improved smart scanning software and execute the scan. Some additional adjustments to the scanned image can be done in the software if desired (such as rotating pages, deleting selected pages, adding more pages) and then the document is saved to where you have chosen in the configuration software. The unit comes preconfigured with convenient scanning profiles, but you can customize these and add your own using the provided software, which will then appear as choices in the selection menu on the scanner. There is also a button to launch the scanner configuration tool. Scans can also be initiated from within third party software such as Adobe Acrobat or Paperport using TWAIN or WIA drivers. This is by far the best scanning solution I have yet encountered.
The output tray has extensions to keep pages from falling off the end or to the side. These are a bit flimsy so most of the time, I just keep the main output tray extended about 3/4 of the way. I only extend it all the way out and unfold the side and end catches when scanning a larger stack of full sized documents (letter or legal pages).
Bottom line: A top notch document scanner that is well worth its price. A joy to use.

HP scan jet 7000 sheet feed scaner is wonderful. It is extremely fast, easy to use and set up.The only time it jams is if I leave a staple or post it note on something I am scanning and that is my fault not the scanner
I tested single sheets first without problem. When I tested 50 sheets. It failed to feed. (Reason for the first customer to return it?) After trying several times and readjusting the unit, it started to feed crooked. After a couple of hundred pages, it started to worked okay.
Second issue: If you do not load and set the VRS software to post process the Acrobat pdf files, the scanned files are too big (a MB/page at 200 dpi). The VRS software rescans the result into a decent size.
After scanning hundreds of pages, I have not seen a problem with the unit. So it may need some break in before it starts working. I will report if it goes bad again.
It scans very fast in resolutions up to 300 dpi. I like the double sided in one pass feature. VRS post processing is nice also. (But the pdf file cannot be read by Acrobat 5 or below). You need the latest readers.
I would give it a higher rating but the initial experience was not good. It is a good scanner.

The ease of use and set-up, everything that was needed to use came in the box(software, cords, manuals, etc.) We did have one question about the scanning to PDF so we called the 1-800 number and within 10 minutes we were familiar with the feature. We like the fact that there was additional help from Panasonic if needed.
For the price, a great machine.We bought this machine as a stand alone fax. First set of ink ran out after three months of minimal use(1-2 pages per day). Replaced with Panasonic toner only to find out we have a bad drum. I talked to Panasonic "customer support" several times and each time they deny speaking to me about this problem the previous time. They will not support their products. We have since purchased a Brother Intellifax 2820 and love it. We had years of service from our HP and great customer service. Stay away from this machine.

It''s chintzy-appearing plastic paper tray sticking out of the front and it''s very inexpensive price (...) belies its rather impressive capabilities as a reasonably "heavy duty" home office or small business printer.
I''m a full-time, home-based medical transcriptionist. My printer output averages 5,000-7,500 pages a month -a much higher output demand than most home offices and others who have posted reviews here. Because I work on production, I absolutely require a reliable laser printer.
The reason that I bought the HP 1300 was because a Brother HL-5140 I had recently purchased turned out to be entirely unsatisfactory after only a couple months of use (it''s poorly designed and plagued with paper jams). I knew I should have stuck with HP in the first place.
I have now used the HP 1300 for about a month and printed more than 5,000 pages without a single glitch or paper jam. Yes, I am very careful about how I handle the paper I put into the printer, but I think that''s pretty amazing. And after printing more than 5,000 pages with the small-capacity 13A toner cartridge (which is rated at 2,500 pages), I still have 25% of the toner left.
Over the past years I have used LaserJet 4L and 6P models extensively. The only differences I can discern between them and the current printer is that he HP 1300 is quieter and a whole lot faster. And, contrary to the observations of some reviewers here, I have found the print quality among all three to be consistenly excellent.
I don''t give a 5-star rating easily, but the HP 1300 has earned it.
THE PROS:
1. Initial setup (at least for me, using a parallel port connection with both DOS and Windows drivers) was incredibly quick and simple. Anyone who has trouble installing this printer (as mentioned in a couple of other reviews here) probably didn''t bother to read the instructions.
2. I found the online documentation to be quite adequate, and the online "Toolbox" is an extremely useful tool for both customizing the printer and monitoring its current status.
3. If output speed is what you''re looking for, the HP 1300 delivers with HP''s "instant-on fuser technology." No more waiting for the laser printer to warm up between jobs. For me, this "first page out" time is as important as the rated print speed.
4. Paper of all kinds, including envelopes, run through it without any problems, and the print quality is excellent.
5. It''s about as quiet as any laser printer I''ve ever used.
6. The HP 1300 appears to be VERY well designed and built for very hard use. Changing the toner cartridge couldn''t be easier.
THE CONS:
1. I remains to be seen if the HP 1300 will stand up to my very rigorous use as well as my old LaserJet 6P, which has over 120,000 pages through it and is still going strong.
2. As noted by another reviewer, like nearly all laser printers, it does tend to curl the top and bottom edges of the printed pages a bit sometimes, which can be a bit annoying. However, this characteristic is common to nearly all laser printers, and it depends a lot on temperature, humidity, and the type of paper you''re using.
All in all, an absolutely fantastic, reasonably heavy-duty printer, and a terrific bargain for(...).

This HP pretty much delivers its money''s worth. The paper tray holds a decent sized 250 pages, but the strength of the printer remains it''s speed. I use it from home and probably print 300-600 pages a week. It has no problems dealing with the output, though it does sound like there''s a lawn mower loose in the house every time it kicks into action. If you live next to Benedictine Monks or a Yoga school, you''re probably going to need something a little more mindful of neighbors, but otherwise, this is a powerful workhorse. Sure, it''s just black and white, but if you''re looking for efficiency, not a bad choice. The previous reviewer mention a problem with quality of print. I just don''t see it. I tried smudging the pages with my fingers, running them underwater, giving them to the dog, but the print survived. I even do professional work off it, and still, fail to see the problem. Works well. Thus far I''m quite happy with it.I really like the 10 page manual feed `tray'' that sits on top of the regular paper tray cover. Great if you need to print a booklet or a small duplex job since you don''t have to take all the paper out. Also great for reusing paper that has been printed on one side for those small print jobs that you''ll throw away anyway like rough drafts etc.
With the guides set properly, I haven''t experienced any of the crooked printing reported by other reviewers. The manual tray paper guides slide easily so you''ll need to keep an eye on them.
Some reviewers have mentioned that the print is too light. At default settings the printing is a bit lighter than my old HP LaserJet 5L however this can be easily fixed by bumping up the toner density from 3 to 4 (on a scale of 1 to 5). Note: this will increase the per page cost as you will be using more toner. Unfortunately, this feature is not very well documented in the manual. It''s accessed through the HP Toolbox > Advanced Print Settings > Print Quality.
No printed manual is included so you''ll have to print it yourself (172 pages). Alas, the lack of a printer manual is par for the course these days. When I first tried to print the manual, I got a fatal error (all three lights on) about 20 pages into the job and had to turn off the printer and reboot my computer before I could print again. Fortunately, this has not happed since and I''ve now printed a total of 476 pages. The manual is ok but could be a lot more detailed and better laid out so as not to waste paper. Some critical stuff is in the README file.
HP recommends a "software first install" which means you install the drivers first and then connect the printer when prompted during the installation.
One piece of advice: use the custom install feature and install both the PCL and PS drivers (only the PCL is installed by default). The PS driver gives substantially better results printing PDF''s. With the PCL driver some PDF pages suffer from dropouts and the text looks terrible, however they print perfectly with the PS driver. You will also need the HP toolbox as it is the only way to access printer features such as Toner Density (unless you have the 1300n with the LIO print server.)
If you need to add the PS driver after you have installed the HP Printing system things get a little tricky. Read the "known issues" in the README file. Basically, if using the CD, "Be sure to select the HP toolbox and the print driver you wish to install," otherwise it will delete the HP Toolbox. This is completely counter intuitive as one figures that once the Toolbox is installed it need not be installed gain. I made this mistake and subsequent attempts to "modify the existing installation" by adding the missing components had everything installed but I still couldn''t use the web update feature. Hence I removed everything and reinstalled it from scratch.

If you are looking to buy LaserJet 1300 (or its cheaper sibling, 1150), take a look at newly released LaserJet 1160 and 1320. They address some of 1150 and 1300''s biggest shortcomings while being nicer looking. I have used LaserJet 1300 for several months and while I think it is a decent printer, I am not a fan of protruding paper tray (it reminds me of old DeskJet printers) and its output bin tends to curl papers when 50 or so pages are stacked.After playing with both 1160 and 1320, I got 1160 (refer to my LaserJet 1160 Amazon review). Both 1160 and 1320 look more like a laser printer while still maintaining small footprint. LED status lights are still cryptic, but they are now clearly labeled. Although multifunction input tray can accept only 1 sheet at a time (1150 and 1300 accepted 10 sheets), the paper handling is improved overall and output bin is more robust. And output quality is crispier, with better defined text and graphics.
The printer worked like a champ for as long as it lasted, but once the crackling sound hits, as mentioned in another review, it''s time for a new printer.

I paid the $500 price tag for this printer because I needed a quality printer/scanner/copier for home office use that was durable, fast, wireless and Vista compatible. I even called HP prior to purchasing it, to confirm that the printer was compatible with Vista. The customer service rep. said it was. Wrong. Upon inserting the software disc that came with the printer, I immediately learned it was not compatible with Vista. 14 phone calls to Tech support and one month later I finally got software for the printer. However, I am on my second printer because the first one jammed repeatedly, printed crooked and dog-eared paper. After 1-1/2 weeks, the replacement printer is doing the same thing.What has been most disappointing about this product is the technical support. Call 5 times and you will get 5 different answers, 3 of which will be incomprehensible due to heavily accented technicians. All of HP''s technical support is, apparently, provided from India. Some of the techs know what they''re doing, some don''t but pretend they do and others direct you to others to get you off the phone ("it''s your McAfee Security call them", "it''s your router, call Linksys" the problem was neither McAfee nor Linksys).
I have a history of purchasing HP products but have never experienced any product that was so inferior and obviously not capable of performing as advertised. Shame on HP.I purchased the 7780 rather than the less expensive 7680 to take advantage of the 2nd, and larger, paper tray. The first tray holds 250 sheets, the second 350 sheets. My plan was to load the smaller, tray 1 with envelopes, letter head or photo paper, and the larger 2nd tray with ordinary paper. You can set either tray as the "default" tray or "lock" a tray to restrict printing to that locked tray. The idea is to prevent selecting a tray with letter head stationary when the stock paper tray runs out. The problem is that it doesn''t work that way.
With tray 1 locked and the optional 2nd tray set as "default", printing from the computer works fine, tray 2 is the source of paper. The problem occurs upon receipt of a fax or when copying a document from the device, it always prints to tray 1, which is "locked".
HP support says that is the way it works. Sounds like a design error to me.

Just bought this printer and so far, so good. The install was very smooth, once the printer finished grinding through its rather lengthy initialization. Had to set up the network connection via the onboard control panel rather than from the computer, but once that was done, installation was painless.This unit prints well and also faxes from the the computer without a hitch. Copying works as expected. Scanning is the big surprise. The digital filing function allows you press a button to scan documents from the feeder or glass directly to a network drive without needing to do anything on a connected computer. You can also request a scan from a computer as with most all-in-ones.
Print quality is excellent. Speed is ho-hum. Duplex printing, WiFi, ethernet and usb connections standard, as is a a second paper tray.
Looks like a winner!
I picked this model because of the wireless features. It is one of those features you think you might want, but once you have it you wonder how you ever did without it before. We have several laptops in our house and the ability to print from anywhere, plus only needing one printer is really worth the extra $$.
Another great (and unexpected) feature is the range of output options you get, for two sided, brochure, booklet (!) etc. etc. I had previously had to use add-on programs to get these kinds of output, with mixed results. Now they work perfectly. (You don''t need to get the high-end 7780 for this feature, I would guess the next one down with duplex printing would be just as good.)
I originally installed the unit before we got a Vista machine. The installation went ok, but you have to pay attention to the directions. I just got a Vista machine and downloaded the latest drivers (today) from the HP website. These newest drivers are also for XP as well as Vista. Bottom line, the installation on the Vista machine was way faster and easier than on XP...so either this is a function of Vista or the whole driver package is improved from what shipped with the machine back in May.

I was used to the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 that I have at work, but in addition to an arm they also wanted a leg. The price of the NeatDesk is substantially less (about 40% for what I paid), and the promotional material for the scanning software was really sexy. So I clicked buy.
After a few days, my conclusion is that although it could be an outstanding product with a couple of tweaks, it''s just not ready for primetime. This may be the case of a small company working on tight margins with a product that got too big too fast. It remains to be seen whether or not they can keep up with their new-found popularity.

It came with the grim spectre of having to clean and calibrate your scanner. You don''t have to clean or calibrate the ScanSnap, although the ScanSnap does include "consumables", so maybe it''s a tie.

Good Stuff
Recognizes dates, subtotal, sales tax, and credit card used. This alone almost makes the product an overall winner and definitely put it on top for scanning receipts.
As mentioned above, you don''t have to file away your scans until you want to.

Bad Stuff
Always takes the scan from the front but from the sheet in the back, which may be more intuitive for the beginner, but also means that a stack of double-sided sheets will go into the software backwards (page 2, 1, 4, 3, etc.) so you''ll have to sort your document before and after scanning. Maybe I just haven''t figured this one out, but it does seem like they emphasis multiple single-page documents vs. one multiple-page document.
* UPDATE: I figured out that you have to put the document in face up and everything is scanned in from the last page to the front. Your physical document will come out sorted, and the software will reverse the order of the scanned pages for you so the electronic document is correct.
Does not auto-rotate to fix crooked problem caused by not having adjustable paper guides.
Does not do auto-color detection--it''s either all black-and-white or all color and you must choose. Those "Scan" and "PDF" buttons on the front are great, but you have to go into the Quick Scan application to set up how everything will be scanned first, defeating the convenience.
Viewing the documents that are in the library is difficult. Should have a simple hand-tool for dragging and allow multiple documents to be open at one time.
Moving data around the library is laborious.
Software installs SQL Server Express, which takes up system resources and at least for me causes the program to not want to start up (try again message a couple of times before starting). Sure the search results come back very quickly, but at what cost? As a developer, I actually already had SQL Server Express installed, but it went ahead and installed another instance... Not very nice.
Lots of opportunities to categorize data, but searching for the categories is difficult. For example, to see what you marked for follow up click "Advanced Search", click "Looking at..." and select "Action Type", click "Selected in the List", click and check box that says "Follow Up". It''s more work finding out what''s marked "follow up" than to actually follow up.
The heavy emphasis is on recording receipts for expenses that will be reimbursed by your employer or be tax deductible. So what happens when I have a pay stub for consulting work? I have to file it as a document where I can''t tag it''s dollar amount, can''t tag it as 1099 income, and it can''t be exported to Quicken. That''s one of the main reasons I got the scanner.
Categories for receipts are very limited. Need a split? You''ll have to do it yourself when you get to Quicken if you can remember what the receipt was for. Sales tax is always exported as an over-generalized "State Tax".
How it Could (Easily) be Made Great
Package in or sell another paper guide that is adjustable. You can use the same snap-in style that is used for the receipt/business card guide.
Add one inch to the pull-out paper support.
Update the software to take scans from the face down position first on double-sided scans. Take the scan from the face down position only in single-sided scans.
* UPDATE: Even though this way seems more intuitive to me, the way the software does it is okay (see update above).
Add in auto-color detection and auto-rotate so that scans always come out right. If Neat Co can do awesome text-detection, they could do this.
Conclusion
Seems to be an innovative company so I''ll keep it in anticipation of at least the software updates.
UPDATE After 2 Years: After having owned this product for a good while I have to say it''s worked fairly well for what it is. During this time I made the switch to a Mac and the Mac version of the NeatWorks software was a huge improvement. (From what I understand, the PC software seems to have caught up somewhat.) For the most part it has done what I want it to: scan a few receipts for expense reports but mostly documents of 10 pages or less. I tried to scan my mortgage documents of about 60 pages, but it kept grabbing multiple pages. I had to scan in batches and grab a beer (darn).
It still does weird things though. For example, sometimes it will scan and not fully eject the document and after a moment will display blinking red lights. Other times it will whisk the document through and the document ends up with a large black area at the top.
At the end of the day, for the casual home user who doesn''t mind taking a little extra time to scan, this is probably a best buy. For the business user who will frequently be scanning large documents, the Fujitsu products will probably be a better fit, especially since their price is now a lot closer to the NeatDesk.

I went to the store looking for the Neat Receipts scanner, and I came across this new product. I could not be more happy for buying it! I had 4 years worth of credit card and bank statements piled up in boxes, and with this scanner system I was able to scan them and organize them on my computer in less than a day (I''m talking hundreds of pages).I have absolutely no complaints on this (other than the price, which is high, but it is a new product and it will come down).
The scanner can read 2 sided documents and scan both sides, in color! And it does it fast.
It also reads receipts and business cards and extracts the information from them (such as what store the receipt is from, how much total was, how much tax was, date of transaction, etc...) The best part about this feature is that it lets you edit the information (sometimes necessary if the receipt was very worn or wrinkled.
The software is extremely easy to use and very powerful. A great feature about the scanner/software is that you can load a bunch of pages and start scanning them. While they scan you can work on filing other documents. Once the pages are scanned they go into a sort of "inbox" where they wait for you to look at them and decide where to file them.
The two sided, color scanning is great and very fast. Another convenient feature the program has is the ability to combine several pages into one document. All you do is click on the different pages while holding down control and click combine ... and you have one file for a multi page document!
All the files you scan into the program are searchable, so you can enter a search term and it will bring up all the documents (or receipts or business cards, depending on which section you are searching in). Very handy to search back on when you bought something...
Another great feature for those that do not receive paper statements is the pdf import feature! If you get your statements from online, you can still import the file into the program (as if you had scanned it in yourself) and have the searchable capabilites of the other files.
Keep in mind, this is probably not a good scanner to scan pictures with, but for a document scanner, it is fast, and very good. I just hope it lasts the wear and tear I''m subjecting it to right now. I am very thankful that this product has helped me get rid of all of my paper clutter!!!

This scanner is marketed to small businesses, and while I do not happen to run one of those, it does appear to be a really nice item for organizing business expenses. Since I am very fond of ''tech'' of all sorts, I offered to test and review this item.The description says it does not support 64 bit windows, and in fact the included installer CD refused to run on my 64 bit system. Not to worry though, if you go to their web site (www.neatco.com) you can download a 64 bit version. It installs a database as well as the scanner software. There is a special piece of paper in the package which is used to calibrate the scanner, and the documentation recommends occasional recalibration, which means you need to NOT lose the paper. I am not sure what you''d do if you lost it...I guess ask them to send you another one.
The NeatWorks software is really nifty. It interprets the scanned documents, and if they are receipts, it picks out dollar amounts for later use in expense reports. I did not have any business cards to try, but the application will scan them and produce an update to several types of ''contact list'' that you might use. There is also an option to choose to file an item as a ''document'' which means it is largely uninterpreted (though you can do text searches on them. One suggestion made by the developer is that you file recipes as documents so they can be searched for ingredient lists).
I wanted to give this scanner a good test, so I fed in a bunch of stuff just to see how it would be handled. My results:
1) I fed in a grocery receipt that had been folded a few times but wasn''t badly crumpled. This was handled just fine, and the software was easily able to pick out the correct dollar totals. It even figured out that the receipt was for groceries and tagged it as such.
2) An Amazon purchase receipt that was in the box from a network hard drive I recently purchased. This scanned correctly as ''hardware'' but the software read the dollar sign on the total as a ''1'' and thus added a thousand dollars to the purchase amount! Yow! Luckily, this is simple to fix in the application and you are in fact prompted to verify the numbers before they are filed in the database.
3) A receipt from a recent American Airlines flight to Texas. The application did read it as an ''airline'' expense, but the dollar totals were completely misread. Again, I fixed them easily.
4) A receipt from a recent trip to Best Buy. If you''ve seen BB receipts lately, these are receipts with an attitude! They''ve got a lot of ''stuff'' printed on them, advertisements, phone numbers, etc. The scanner processed this perfectly and the software read everything correctly.
5) For chuckles, I fed in a MegaMillion lottery ticket (a loser, sadly). This ticket had really light print on a colored background, and of course it had numbers everywhere. Not surprisingly, the software was completly flummoxed by this one. I filed it under ''documents''.
6) How about a 20 dollar bill? It scanned perfectly, and the software indicated it was ''cash'' (hee hee) but did not indicate the denomination.
7) Since I was testing it, I decided to do something of a stress test. I took a longish grocery receipt and I crumpled that sucker up BADLY. Then I flattened it out as best I could and fed it in. For good measure, as the paper disappeared into the scanner, my cat leapt onto the desk and whacked it. Now THAT is a test... This receipt did not fare well at all. It was completely chewed up and caught in the scanner mechanism. I was afraid I''d done some damage but I picked out the pieces and then got the last of it out of the works by scanning a blank piece of paper. This jam-clearing exercise was simple to do, since the scanner top pops open at the push of a button to allow access to the internals. The scanner was undamaged and I fed in another document, which processed just fine.
Now I tried out some of the software options...
Once the receipts were in the scanner database, there were numerous export options. I exported to a MS Word document and got a very nice ''expense report''. An export to Excel gave me an xls file that produced a nice spreadsheet.
My final scans really tested the NeatWorks interpretive software, and that application exhibited a level of functionality that might be an indication of why this scanner is so expensive. I tore a page out of a paperback book (the ''about the author'' page at the end, because it contained two different font sizes and some bolding) and scanned it in as a document. Then I exported it to a PDF and opened that PDF in Adobe reader. I exported it to a text file and it was a perfect text representation of the words on the page! I could wish it had the option to export to MS Word format because I can''t begin to afford Adobe Acrobat...
I then printed out an adobe document I already had on my system, a knitting pattern with smallish text and color pictures. I scanned the printed document back in and then used the NeatWorks software to export it to PDF. I ended up with a PDF that looks really close to the original, allowing for some quality loss from printing the color images.
All in all, I liked this scanner and as I said, if I were running a small business, I''d find it really useful. It''s also really nice for folks who scan in regular documents because it saves them in a handy database for later searching or printing.
The newly added 64 bit support means this will be my ''main'' scanner in the future.

I really really really wanted to like this scanner. I received the unit on Friday and had planned on spending Saturday scanning in all my documents and then relaxing on Sunday. I am sooooo disappointed with the quality of the scans and software when scanning in documents like car insurance or doctors statements that I am sending it back.The main issue is that the manufacture''s web site states that the scanner can scan grayscale and B/W documents in at a rate of 25 PPM. This is an outright lie on one level and a stretching of the truth on another level.
First let me start off with the truth stretching. The scanner is very fast while scanning in B/W images but it did not seam like it was 25 PPM fast so I timed it using a stop watch. I was able to scan in a page (two sides) in 6.4 seconds that''s 10 PPM not 25! As Fujitsu rates their ScanSnap S1500M at 20 PPM whether you scan one or two sides, I assumed I would see the NeatDesk scanner do the same. Thinking that they (NeatCo) must have been playing with some slick marketing numbers when they came up with the 25 PPM rate I figured I would see the 10 PPM rate double to 20 if I only scanned one side of a page instead of two. I was very disappointed to see that the rate did not change between one or two sides. Normally I would think that 10 PPM is a very quick scan, which it is, but it is more than half as fast as advertised.
That was the truth stretching now onto the lie.
My main complaint is not the scan rate of B/W or grayscale scans. I would be very happy with a 10 PPM grayscale document scanner. The problem is that the scanner / software package does NOT scan in grayscale. The scanner DOES send the images to my iMac in GRAYSCALE and then the horrible software converts it to B/W. Yes you heard me right! They take a perfectly legible (8 bit, 256 levels of black) grayscale image and turn it into a very poor quality B/W (2 bit, 2 color) illegible image. I can''t for the life of me understand why they would do such a thing.
If you are only interested in scanning in receipts, which by their nature are only black and white, then you might be happy with the software. Unfortunately about 95% of the stuff I wanted to scan is various types of documents / kids school work / insurance papers / medical records etc. If you have ever looked at these kinds of documents you will notice that most of them have shaded areas on the page that highlight important text. These shaded areas, along with the text, usually become unreadable when converted to B/W. Not only can I not able to read them the OCR can''t detect them either. It makes me angry to see a scan show up on the screen that looks GREAT only to have it destroyed a few seconds later by the software as it converts it to black and white.
I contacted NeatCo about the ability to scan to grayscale. Their support person was very nice and polite; unfortunately she confirmed for me that the software does not support grayscale. Her response is at the end of the review.
You may think that I should just scan in color. Unfortunately scanning in color is very slow. A color scan took 15 seconds for a single sided page and 27.5 seconds for a single 2-sided page (weird that color scans do double the time for 2 sides unlike the BW option). At this rate it puts color scans in at 2 PPM not the 8.5 reported on their web site. At 2 PPM it will take me several hundred hours to scan everything I need to scan.
The quality of color scans is very good if you are willing to wait 30 seconds for a single 2-sided scan.
Here are my timing results for the BW, color, 1 side and 2 sided document. All times are for a single sheet of paper.

Just for reference I have a late 2008 24'''' iMac with 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 gigs of ram. I have also updated the NeatDesk software to their latest version as of 10/30/2009 which is 2.1.9
I have taken some screen shots of the grayscale images before they are converted to BW and will try to post them to Amazon. In the screen shots you can see that the initial image looks very nice. If NeatCo fixes this issue the package might be worth a look.

I had to constantly tweak the printer settings to get the right colors. Not only that, I heard the prints would eventually turn orange over a period of time! I was about to give up on the printer, but then came along the colorlife papers.
Every print that I made with the colorlife papers have come out a near perfect match with its onscreen counterpart. The quality is terrific with vivid colors and great detail. The printout feels and looks like a real profressional quality print! Overall, I am very satisfied with this paper. We bought this laminator for a project I was working on for our toddler. I called a couple office supply stores and it was going to cost over Twenty dollars to laminate the project. I opted to purchase the laminator for just over the cost of this 1 project. I have never laminated anything and I was impressed. Without reading the instructions I was able to laminate my project. If you have your own home-based business or small business then you know that all the gadgets that are necessary for business to function can end up taking a huge chunk of your budget -not to mention your limited space! The first thing that impressed me about this office machine was how well it was built. Weighing in at a hefty 30+ lbs, this guy is not made of cheap materials that will break the first time you bump into it (and trust me, the first few days I had it I bumped into it a lot until I moved it!) Once I got it all setup I was equally impressed with the features -everything you''d expect, and then some. Scan, Print, Copy, Fax -and a few twists on them as well. You can scan to e-mail, an FTP server or a network location all with just a push of a button. Fax from multiple PC''s located across the office and even setup print queues so that everyone can get their work done without bumping into one another.
As this guy was designed for a business setting I should point out that it is rather loud. I would not recommend it for a home printer because of the noise and just because most of the features will never be used. This guy was designed for business, and will do its best when in a business setting. Some of the fax and scan features make use of ftp servers and SNMB shares on a network, things you probably don''t have setup at your home!
Standard connectivity includes a usb hookup, but to get the maximum functionality out of the printer you should connect it up to your network via the ethernet port. That way you can get all the cool print/fax/scan features as well as a handy web interface to check on the printer and make setting adjustments. It does not come with a wireless hookup, so you will need to make sure you have a cabled connection nearby for it to use.
The toner cartridges are reasonable priced and will average you about 2000 copies; and the document feeder is one of the most robust and sturdier ones I have seen on a printer in this price range for a long time.
All in all, a great business product that can really save you money and space no matter where you do business!

I thought I''d try the Panasonic multi-function printer since I figured it might help me in my home office. I''ve only really got a printer so the idea of having a scanner, copier and fax machine I could use for basic tasks sounded good to me. I''ll break this down by task/feature.Setup
The printer was real easy to set up. Plug in a phone line, plug in a network cable (I''m using it on my home network) and plug in power. Install software. Done. The software isn''t even really required. Now, the downside is, if you''re looking to plug this into your computer because you honestly are just using it on one machine and don''t really have a network setup then you''re out of luck. It''s got a USB port so you can do just that (plug it into your computer directly) but it doesn''t come in the box. You have to go get one yourself. Not nice in my opinion. It''s one thing to say "Network Ready" and another thing entirely to be "Network Required". That being said, you still can use it as a printer, copier and fax machine if you don''t plug it into anything except the phone line.
One other thing to note, the printer cartridge included in the package comes in two parts. One smaller part fits into a slot in the bigger cartridge (with the ink) and needs to be opened (you rotate a drum that presumably exposes the print head to the incoming paper). I''m a big and strong guy and I had a whole lot of fun trying to get that drum rotated during the setup. Granted I was afraid I''d break it but the piece you''re pushing against is pretty solid plastic. It was more about how much resistance there was there. It''s possible it was just a freak thing with my cartridge but you''d think it would either be easier or not require you to assemble the cartridge in the first place (my other laser printer has one cartridge).
Printer
As a printer, the Panasonic is pretty straightforward. I think the best part of it is that it''s a laser printer. I''d always been used to seeing inkjet versions of these multi-function printers which has turned me off. It supports up to 600 dpi print outs with decent results. I did have some trouble getting the printer set up in Windows (using Win 7 64-bit) as the installer installed a printer in Windows that didn''t seem to go anywhere. You could print to it but the documents just disappeared in to the ether. I deleted that and reinstalled the printer (just using the built-in/available driver that Windows offered which could still be the same drivers) and it worked great. It can push out 24 ppm and though I didn''t run a speed test to check this out (not gonna waste paper on that...I don''t print that much in a week) what I did print out came out in a snap.
Scanner
I was really looking forward to the scanner part since I have a more "pro" scanner but it''s largely mothballed so it''s a hassle to break it out to do any scanning. It was real easy to run a scan though the results are a bit iffy. For most documents, it was just fine. Scans were clean enough on regular paper. But, when I used paper that had even a slight gloss to it (I''m not talking magazine gloss, I''m talking matte coated paper), I''d get glare artifacts all over the place. Basically, the light from the scanner was (and I''m just theorizing here, not an expert) reflecting back enough to create something like a feedback loop. And, this didn''t cover the entire page, just certain chunks of it. Even more odd was that the patterns, while consistent from scan to scan for the same document, were different from those when using the copy function. So, I can''t say if this is a fault of the machine or the technology itself.
The OCR software included with the printer is functional but nothing fancy. And when I say "nothing fancy", I mean it. The UI is incredibly retro (the software has a copyright of 2002). Whereas you''d expect to be able to use your mouse''s scrollwheel to either scroll or zoom in/out, the app constrains you to set zoom levels (50% of actual, fit to window, etc.) and you have to click around between the horizontal and vertical scrollbars to get where you want to go. You can then use boxes (no magic wand or anything for you PhotoShop types) to define areas that have text, images, etc. It includes a feature that lets you edit the OCR''s attempt at recognizing the word, number, punctuation though it can get tedious and the font they use to display the replacement character is terrible (sort of like a blobby Courier) to where you can''t always be sure if you''re looking at a zero versus an eight or a comma versus a period. The recognition itself is as good as the quality of the scan so your mileage will vary. Clean scans (non-glossy paper, straightforward fonts/text) work nearly perfect (line spacing might take a hit with a slightly misaligned original...especially since you can only rotate 90 degrees within the software). Anything else is a grab bag that usually results in missing sections or something that looks like a ransom note. If you really need OCR, you''ll want to find something better.
Fax
Another feature I was looking forward to. As much as faxing is on the decline (unless you''re dealing with companies that really just don''t trust online signatures for legal or other reasons), I still find myself wishing I had a fax handy at times. I usually end up heading to the Fedex store or letting my wife do it from work. By default, the fax feature is on and working. In my case, I don''t have a dedicated fax line and I was only really planning on using this on an as needed basis. It took a sec to find the right place in the instructions to figure out the correct setting (in fact, the machine''s own menu system had a print option to print a sheet of instructions related to that feature which helped the most). Once I did it though, I was golden. I faxed a doc off to someone (the one time I needed it in six months) and it went off without a hitch. They e-mailed me what they got as a PDF and it looked as good as you''d expect (it was an IRS form so text-dense, no graphics). Even better is the PC Fax feature which lets me "print" to the fax feature and fax something directly without having to print it out. The feature shows up as a printer and, when you print to it, prompts for a number to fax to--even offering a delayed send option so you can have it send out an hour later or something (say to avoid interfering with the phone during business hours). Very cool. The only down side is the software log that shows you sent and received faxes doesn''t seem to retain those faxes despite setting it up NOT to delete sent faxes and the like.
Copy
The copy feature is yet another function I''ve been wanting for a while. Of course, with a scanner, it''s effectively a scan and a print but as I mentioned before, my scanner isn''t exactly a convenient option. The copies worked well and, as you''d expect, are as fast as they can be with a fast scan and a 24 ppm printer. I didn''t try a large copy job but I don''t expect this thing to be some refrigerator-sized Xerox beast that churns out books in a few minutes. For the one-off copy, it works great.
As mentioned above with the scanner, with certain paper types, you do see some artifacting but strangely the pattern is different from the scan. This could be because the copies are lower resolution than the scans (sort of a fast scan) so there''s less opportunity for "feedback" from the light source but it''s strange nonetheless. For the record, the copy scan looks better than the scan.
Conclusion
All in all the product is good enough. I don''t have a previous product that this is replacing (at least not one I''ve used in the past decade) so I can''t really compare it to other products. But, if you''re in the market for a multifunction printer that does it all and you aren''t worried about the aforementioned scanning artifacting (i.e. it''s not about the quality of the scans, just that you have a digital copy you can use), then go for it. The Panasonic includes all the features you''d expect but upgraded with tech that used to be only in dream machines that did just one thing. Just something about having one of these printers as a laser printer rather than an inkjet that seems to make it feel so much better than it used to be when buying one of these devices.

I''ve always had a printer, but the printers that I''ve had have always been inkjet printers. The average person who has a printer at home would do well with an inkjet printer. A few years ago, however, I started my first small business, and then, this year, my second. While I did not require the services of a printer for my first business, my second business, photography, found me constantly printing out contracts and information for clients, and I was getting extremely sick of having to purchase ink cartridges, so I decided to try the Panasonic Multi-Function Printer.One thing that caught my attention upon first opening it was that there were instructions for removing it from the package! I don''t think I''ve ever seen that before. I''ve never dealt with a toner before, and was worried that I wouldn''t know how to put it in, but the picture instructions were easy to follow along and detailed enough so that I was easily able to get it in right the first time. Within just a few minutes I had the printer put together and plugged in to the outlet.
The software installation was simple and painless and in only five minutes the printer was hooked up and ready to print except that I had to provide my own USB cable. I don''t understand why a product that''s this good, and affordable, doesn''t come with it''s own USB cable? Granted, many people may plug the printer into their existing network, but as I don''t have a network, I need to use the USB port, and would have loved to have a USB cable included in the package.
Printing is simple and extremely quick, especially if you''re used to an inkjet printer, and don''t get me started on copying! I''m able to put a contract into the top slot and to watch it feed through, lightening fast, and to print a copy that looks identical to the original. It''s saved me tons of time and has allowed me to have a number of copies of contracts ready at a moments notice.
THE PROS: Easy to set up (although I have had no reasons to try the networking capabilities) and works beautifully. Doesn''t seem too loud to me and I love that the copying function works so quickly, and that it was so easy to put together and set up.
THE CONS: No USB cable!! Please, Panasonic, add a USB cable to the next small office printer you offer!
My original plan was to put this printer in another room of my house, as I assumed that I would be more comfortable sticking with the inkjet printer. Once I saw what this printer could do, and calculated how much money it is going to save me in printing, the inkjet printer got moved and this printer now sits beautifully in my home office.

The printer itself works ok...prints fine, fax works great, scans are mediocre-even from the glass because they turn out lopsided, printing envelopes or labels always turn out crooked as well and after having the machine for about 5 months I started having a line down the center of ADF scans and faxes but that was gone after I opened the lid and vacuumed. I have a few other issues: whenever I use the machine it causes the lights in my office to flicker until it goes back into power save mode (I am in an old building but my other two printers didn''t cause this), every day at noon it comes on by itself--causing the lights to flicker and the BIGGEST issue for me has been that the display is now reading drum life low. I have had the printer about six months and have gone through a little under a half a case of paper and when that display came on, I had JUST changed from the original toner cartridge. If I have to change the drum with every toner cartridge, I will be rethinking the economic value of this little guy. The other thing that is a pain about replacing the toner and drum is that they both are difficult to find! You can''t just walk into Office Depot and get it. I know I should have looked into that before I bought the printer. They both have to be ordered online and currently the drum is backordered on the Panasonic website. I''ve been using this for about a month now something like this takes some time to put through its paces. I have to admit I didn''t test the fax at all since I have no use for it.It was larger than I expected (I was spoiled by my tiny Samsung ML-1740) for an office it''s fairly compact, but for a home office it takes up a big chunk of space. But you get a black and white laser printer, fax, scanner, and copier all in one.
If you haven''t had a laser before, you don''t know how much better they are than inkjets for general use. Sure, printing pictures look worse, but they''re ready to go almost instantly and don''t require constant maintenance and expensive ink. You save so much time and wasted ink and paper. Want to print something? Hit print. Boom. 5 seconds later it''s printed, even if you haven''t printed anything for a week. Every 3000 pages you need a pricey new toner cartridge, but that''s still cheaper (per page) and much less often than inkjet.
Pros:
Quite fast once it ramps up, which doesn''t take all that long.
Feels solid as heck.
Completely quiet when not doing anything.
Doesn''t require constant coddling like an inkjet.
Does a decent job color scanning or b&w printing.

The auto-feeder for scanning or copying is very convenient.
USB or Ethernet connection. I tested both you will definitely find ethernet needs more technical savvy to configure, but is more flexible for a multi-computer setup.

Pretty noisy when in operation.
Software is pretty meh. The drivers are hard to find and you will need to do a lot of manual configuration on the printer itself (fine with me, but if you don''t have experience with this it could be quite a trial).
Black and white only. This might not seem so bad unless you''ve already had a cheap color laser and realize just how much even crude color improves comprehension of anything but straight text. For example, printed Google maps are incredibly more readable in color.
Initial set up instructions were rather obtuse. There''s a one page visual only, but the pictures are so small it''s a bit hard to tell what''s going on. I managed to do so, but that was mostly using the visual as a hint the hardware is well designed so there''s only one way for anything to fit, so if you get the drum in the vicinity you can figure out what to do next.
No connection cables included you''d better have your own ethernet or usb cable.
Fairly hefty for the home. This certainly does not fit in the printer cubby of my very nice oak desk.
It definitely did the job and at $180 it''s hard to complain too much, but it''s a huge step down from my Brother MFC-9120CN High Quality Digital Color All-in-One Printer with Fax and Networking which is admittedly twice the price, but if you can afford the $350 I suggest you take a look at that. But I''m still giving this four stars because I''m amazed at how much you get for the price.

I use this paper with my Canon S9000 printer to get large blowups of the shots I take with my Olympus E10, and I get sharp images and rich colors. I''ve scaled down some prints to 11x14 so that I can fit them into standard 11x14 mats and 16x20 frames. I have printed some 13x19 pixs and the quality is excellent, but they will have to be custom matted, which can be expensive.This is the paper to use if you have a Canon S9000.

I purchased this paper to go with my new Canon I-9900 printer and love the results. I first tried the Canon matt photo paper thinking it would be best because I''m not a big fan of the glossy photos, but the paper was not what I expected the results were below par. The glossy photo paper is the way to go! I cut off the excess paper after printing my large photos or 12x12 digital scrapbook pages and use them also, no waste here. Great price too!

I own an Epson 750 and find that Epson''s black causes fewer nozzle clogs (an Epson weakness) than non-branded replacements. Generics work fine for color cartridges. I''d like to know if anyone else out there was ripped by a company named Imaprint? They sold me 6 ink cartridges. All of them were dried up. I contacted the company and they said to send them back. That was in Dec. of 2003 I have not heard from them yet. I mailed them by using the US mail service and used Delivery Confirmation. They signed for it and that was it. This is excellent, instant dry paper that will last longer than a traditional lab print. I have sun-fade tested many ink/paper combs over the years and can safely say this stuff is as good as the leading edge Epson ink/paper combo at more reasonable price. A long time fan of the Epson Glossy Photo paper, I found it harder to buy in bulk. Reviews for the HP were very good so I tried. I can''t wait till it''s used up. It''s thinner stock than the Epson which feels flimsy for a photo. HP prints their name on the back in black lettering which is sometimes seen through the image. Finally, I''m not wowed by the look, it just seems a bit flat.
