Note added October 15, 2008: Amazon still won''t let me change my rating, which now would be 1 star (the lowest) based on horrendous quality control. I bought two of these and both had hardware failures within a year or two, of course outside of warranty. The one I bought for my daughter had its network card fail. She can still use it via USB, but not over the network. The one I bought for myself recently failed to scan, fax or copy when using the document feeder, which uses a separate sensing window from flatbed copying and scanning. As a flatbed copier or scanner, it still works. But when using the document feeder, the copies or scans come out blank. And, yes, I''ve put the paper in the right side up. I suspect that there''s a separate sensor or light for that window and it''s broken. On top of the horrible QC this seems to imply, my email to HP took them eight days to answer and then all they said was "this case is a hardware issue so our recommendation for you is to call 800-HP-INVENT (800-474-6836) so you can talk with a Hardware technical agent that can guide you through some trouble shooting steps to determine the cause of this problem and also give you the best solution." OK, I call and after over a significant wait time, I learn that they can help trouble shoot by phone for a fee, offer me a trade-in on a new model, or repair this one. No way am I going to waste more money on this disaster. While maybe I''ve just had a bad run of luck, this does not appear to be the HP I used to know, where quality was top notch.

Note added March 19 2007: Amazon won''t let me change my rating from 4 to 3 stars, but I would do so if I could due to networking problems that resurfaced. I suspect that this is an issue with networked printers in general, not HP, but the time it took to solve the problem makes me wonder whether I would have bought this printer if I knew then what I know now. When the network access works, it''s great, but if your network undergoes a change (I had to replace a Linksys router that went bad), be prepared to do some work. It took me several hours to get things working again. Before I had this problem, I bought one of these as a gift for my adult daughter, living in another state. She had to get the "geek squad" in to solve her similar problems, at a cost of roughly $200. The problem seems to be changes in the IP addresses in the network, and the manual didn''t make it easy to figure out how to even find out the IP address that the printer currently is using. (Hint: Print a Configuration Report from the printer''s front panel, using the menu. The manual does tell you how to do that, and the IP address is part of that report.) Once you have the IP address, I think getting the printer back up would be a lot easier -but I''m not about to bring it down and find out! Hoping this helps.

I have several Macs and one Windows machine and had been using two separate printers for the two "tribes." I also had a fax machine, an old flat bed scanner, and a copier -all taking lots of real estate. When the Samsung ML1430 that I was using on an Airport Extreme USB printer sharing system broke after three years, I decided to go with a networked printer that could be shared between the Macs and the PC. I wanted a major printer brand, and HP was at the top of that list. Why? Because Samsung had stopped supporting the Mac and, as I upgraded my OS, I had had difficulties keeping the printer working. The old driver didn''t work with some OS upgrades. I hoped that a networked printer would make sharing among the Macs and the PC easy -and to a large extent it has.

I did have minor problems getting the printer to work with the PC since I had to turn off all firewalls during the installation and Dell had two. After about an hour of on-line research and fiddling, I got it to work. Getting the Macs to recognize the printer was a snap -sorry Redmond, Apple''s ads seem on target here, though part of the problem may have been with Dell putting two firewalls on the PC.

After the initial hassle with the PC, which has nothing to do with the 3055 per se, I am very happy with all functions -with one minor caveat below. As a printer or copier, it''s fast (almost 20 pages a minute and less than 10 seconds to first page). The automatic document feeder has worked flawlessly so far -often the Achilles heel in my experience. Some other reviews (elsewhere, not here at Amazon) noted that half-tone copies weren''t the greatest and I''d agree. The pictures come out a bit dark.Some of those reviews noted that changing the default setting from text to picture (or whatever HP calls it) helps, but I haven''t tried that yet which is a sign that it''s not a huge problem.

I haven''t used the scanner much yet, but did a few test scans which looked good. On color photos, the 300 dpi scan was poor, but setting it to 600 dpi did a nice job. The level of JPEG encoding changed from 300 to 600 dpi, with the 600 dpi scan being a much larger file, so it''s not clear how much of the poor quality at 300 was due to the scanner and how much to the JPEG encoding. I also have a Fujitsu ScanSnap and will keep it since it is much faster than the HP -but it cost as much as the HP and just does scanning, so that''s not an indictment of the HP. The ScanSnap is intended only for sheet scans, not books or other flatbed material, but is excellent at what it does.

The fax features work well too, and I got rid of my fax machine, freeing up space. I haven''t yet gotten rid of the copier, but might. The 3055 will enlarge and reduce by up to a factor of four -a nice feature. Having only one toner cartridge to keep track of, instead of the three I had before (printer, copier and fax), would be nice. HP toner is about 3 cents per page, a bit more than some laser printers, but much less than ink jets and OK in my book.

The 3055 is also good on energy usage. I hooked up a power and energy meter and, after about 180 continuous hours of light use (only two of use it and we''re not heavy printers), it averaged only 8 watts. When the laser engine is working, of course the power peaks up to about 500 watts, but HP has been good about making sure it doesn''t use too much power when idle, while still allowing it to start up fairly quickly. I''ve seen the idle power drop down as low as 6 watts at times.

I''m not sure if I should have given four or five stars to this unit, with the one star loss being mostly due to my networking problems mentioned above. As I said, that''s not an HP problem. So if you''re looking for a networked all-in-one, consider this five stars within that category.

Note added February 22, 2008: My network did come down again, and this time I set up a static IP address for the machine. With what I''d learned in the interim, it wasn''t such a big deal to do and has been working well for months. Now, I''m not worried about the network coming down and causing major problems. But you need to learn what static IP addresses work with your router (it varies!), how to set it (from the Menu on the console on the HP 3055 and choose Network Configuration, TCP/IP, Manual), and then how to tell your computer to find the device (hint: Intel Macs need the newer HP Setup Assistant and will not work with the one I had; accessible from HP''s support site). On the negative side, the one I bought for my daughter seems to have a bad network card now. That cost her another $200 geek squad visit to figure out, plus now we have to figure out if it''s worth fixing. My rating would now be 3-4 stars (depending if her bad card is unusual or not) if you understand networking really well or can rope a friend with that knowledge into helping you, but no stars otherwise.

I have had previous bad experience with all-in-ones, but bought this as I liked the B&W Laser and network feature (and got it during a sale at half price). I liked it so much I recommended it to a client, who replaced her aging fax machine. The copy ability, with the sheet feeder, is great, the scanner works very well, even over the network, and everything seamlessly works for Macintosh and Windows computers (I have two macs and a windows box). The scanning resolution is good enough for almost everything at 600x600.

The main downside, and why it got 4 stars and not 5, is the reliability. My machine arrived with a malfunctioning Copier. The page would come out badly distorted. Amazon sent a new one, no hassles, and I sent the old one back. The one I bought for a client was from Staples, and after she had that for 6 weeks, it started having problems. Faxes wouldn''t come out unless you turned it off and on again. No warning lights just wouldn''t work. When it came back on, the faxes saved in memory for the last few days would spit out.

Frustratingly, when we called HP about this, our warranty allowed us to mail it to them, wait 3 weeks, and then they would send us the same one back repaired. No thank you I didn''t buy a machine to be without it for 3 weeks. The expedited option, which cost $50, had them send a new one and we would send the old one back. They would ship the new one next day air after the 2 week backlog. No thanks either! So, buy the machine as it''s a great machine, but keep your receipts, or consider the otherwise evil extended warranty, as there''s a good chance this will have problems within a few months.

This is my first all-in-one for a home office. It''s been a while since I''ve had an HP printer, and I had forgotten how well laid-out and well-engineered everything is. When you first set up the machine, be sure to go to HP''s website and download the firmware update.

The print quality is gorgeous; I couldn''t ask for any better, even when printing my intricate company logo with overlapping frames and shadings. Envelopes and even cover stock go through the machine smoothly and print perfectly.

Some extremely slick paper didn''t print well on it, but that isn''t especially surprising nor was it very disappointing.

The machine copies and scans well, and quite quickly for my purposes. It''s plenty quiet; I''ve never come across a quieter laser printer.

Using the on-screen programming (for fax header, etc.) is quite easy; my only complaint is that each entry you make brings you back to the "ready" screen, which adds some unnecessary steps.

My only real problem -and it''s a BIG one -is in receiving faxes. I get 99% of my business through the fax machine, and I can''t depend on the 3055. I get frequent "49 error" messages when receiving a fax. The folks at tech support have been uniformly very nice and knowledgeable (and I''ve talked to over a dozen of them), although their knowledge does not perfectly overlap. Advice: if you don''t get your problem solved with one person, call back later and talk to someone else.

After many, many hours spent with tech support, I have learned the following related to receiving faxes: this machine MUST have a two-lead phone cord, it should be plugged directly into the wall socket (no extension cords), and there''s still no guarantee that it will receive faxes consistently.

My solution: I''ve had to add a separate fax machine (the cheapest machine Brother makes works just fine!), and I''ll contact tech support again some months from now to see if they''ve figured out why I keep getting these "49 error" messages. (Please note: the 3055 I have is not defective, nor is there a problem with my phone line. The machine shares a phone line with my DSL, but the errors occurred even when it was hooked up to my main phone line.)

Overall, I like the machine but the fax problems I''ve experienced have been extremely frustrating.

Great machine but do NOT buy it for a Vista system.

Even if they state on their website the system is compatible, they forgot to mention that the scanner software is a generic one included with Vista. Scans only one sheet at a time. Does not output PDF files.

So the document feeder is useless for scanning.

They do not even have an ETA for a new driver.

If history is a good guide ....when XP was launched it took them for some of their systems a full year to get the drivers ready.

I love this all in one, it''s a little big, but much better then the brother 7820N I got first, while the 7820N is smaller, 7820N had some page curl and eats 1032 watts at peak which kept tripping my computer''s APC, this unit does not have paper curl and only hits 300 watts peak which is well below my circuit capacity. I would recommend this unit over all MFCs on the market, and with the currect 50% rebate going on for OCT, it cannot be beat for the price. If you need a B&W laser all in one, this is the best.

I''ve been printing on canvas since 2003. I ran across this brand on amazon and decided to try out a roll. When I opened the box, I was surprised that the roll had a sticky feel to it. I loaded the printer and printed a few high resolution images. As stated in the description, the prints were sharp and crisp. The colors were good. I let the printed canvas dry over night. I then attempted to apply a water based UV sealant I have used for over 9 years without issue. To my surprise and dissapointment, as soon as I touched the canvas with a foam brush, the ink wiped clean away. I was forced to throw out 10 feet of canvas, because I can''t seal it. The product description should have stated this canvas is not coatable, or requires a special sealant. Had I known, I would not have purchased it. If you do not seal your canvas prints, then this as an adequate canvas. I did not try to stretch any of it, as soon as the ink ran, I tossed the lot, but I see no reason to doubt it will.

I have been looking for parchment paper for a long time; I came across the Southworth brand by chance, and it was a great discovery.

I wanted a yellow-looking paper to make miniatures with an antique feeling parchments, old maps, vintage photographs... Many of the yellow-colored papers that I found were printed only on one side, but this one has the same design on both sides! It has the same crispness and feeling to the touch as real hemp parchment. The paper is thin, but not ultra thin, so it is not fragile like tissue paper; and it prints without problems in my ink-jet printer no jams, no ink stains.

I plan on using it too to print Halloween invitations. I am sure it will look stunning with a red wax seal!

I could not be more happy with it. Highly recommended.

I wanted a printer to replace an ageing Laser printer [300dpi, a dinosaur, yes I know.] and I have always bought HP.

The on board 48MB is fantastic. Set up was a breeze. Set the printer in your software program such as word to double side printing and voila! Clean, crisp `automatic duplexing'' HP calls it. I say AT LAST!

The controls are simple and the display is nice and bright. The printer is always on but no matter, it automatically goes to SLEEP after a period of non-use and instantly `wakes up'' when you send a file to print, be it from the scanner, word or other program. In sleep mode, the display goes of leaving a small green light on.

It has been 5 months and it has worked beautifully. One can even get a print out of how many copies have been jammed [ so far NONE], printed, single or double sided, type of media used [ size and type of paper, envelope etc] this is especially great for an office to keep track of unauthorized usage of the system]

The finish, quality and function of the printer are first class, superb! Buy it, you will well pleased!

I came across this printer used for free. After having used it for about 1 month I have found it to be an outstanding machine. I am impressed with it''s speed while on a network. All manufacturers claim to have the fastest and best, I truly rate this as one of the best for a SOHO setup. Due to it''s rather small footprint (considering it is a laser) it is easy to locate anywhere in a small office setting. First page out is only a few seconds and seems to be faster than many other printers. Fast print speed adds to value. When it wears out, this is one printer I will be sad to replace.

I reviewed the related product, the HP P4014n LaserJet Printer. See my customer review there, which is a very similar product, where I posted a very favorable review.

The only real differences between the two printers are the front panel and a small difference in print speed. The 4015n has a front panel that can be used to enter a passcode to print out jobs that the user doesn''t want anyone else to see or pick up accidentally. The 4015n is also slightly faster, at 52 ppm compared to the 4014n ant 45 ppm. In a big office where people are picking up the wrong printouts I could see the need, but I didn''t see a reason in my small office to pay the $200 premium for 4015n. I have been very happy with the 4014n.

This printer performs very well for everything except Windows 7, 64-bit, for which there is no driver. HP has their Universal Driver, but it does not work. The printer is installed in a Dentist''s office. If we use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 Pro, it works fine, as the drivers exist for XP. We also find that this printer is quite loud: when it kicks on, it''s the loudest thing in the office. It prints fast and in very high quality, we''re just disappointed we can''t get it to work for all of the new systems we install.

I was highly skeptical about shipping a single, heavy electronic device. But it arrived in perfect shape, well packaged and protected. The printer worked perfectly out of the box and continues to work perfectly after several months. It gets a lot of single page use as the printer is in a busy dental office with patients checking out all day long. You assume a printer is going to work, however, so nowadays it is no great shakes if if works as advertised; we expect that. BUT THE PRICE WAS UNBELIEVABLE compared to purchasing locally; our network administrator quoted twice the price. And compared to other online merchants it was highly competitive. I would only go with Amazon, however, since my experiece with returns has been fantastic. As I said in the beginning, I was highly nervous about shipping and was anticiapting problems (that never materialized). Finally, I liked this printer so much I bought a second one for another business office which runs 500 sheets per day through it. If there is one small drawback it''s that the cost of printing. Using genuine HP 64A cartidges, the cost works out to about 1.5 cents per page which is a little high. No matter, this printer, the vendor, and shipping get 5-stars from me!

Works just as well as the regular one, meaning this one gives you the darned "change drum" message after about 2 days, which tells me it''s a printer issue. I''ve seen a lot of people complain about it.

Only two of us use one printer and we have to change it pretty often in our office, so I dunno about calling 2600 pages "high yield" but that''s what the Brother brand calls it too so whatever. This one is like a third of the price and works, so why bother getting the Brother one when you go through so many? (I''ve bought both)

These work perfectly in my Dymo label printer, and are big enough to host both the address of the sender, and my return address. But be aware: these labels, probably because they use are heat-sensitive (that''s how they print, I think), will turn yellow/brown over time, sometimes in as little as a few months if they are in light or warmer places, which makes them unattractive for labeling storage bins or other long-term use. The quality of the inks is good. I can get colorful, attractive brochures, and the better the paper, the more vivid the colors look. The cartridge is very easy to install, doesn''t leak on the print heads, and is durable.

The only problem I have with the cartridges is the unbelievable price for the inks. I got a great deal from the vendor I bought from, but HP is still insanely priced, and with Lexmark turning out cartridges for five clams a shot, it''s hard to justify the shelling out of 18-20 clams for HP''s small cartridges. This has been a great all in one printer producing quality documents with clear, clean text and graphics on many types of papers. It prints excellent copies, makes beautiful greeting cards, envelopes, photo''s of all sizes borderless and not, and makes nice scans.

I chose this model PSC2355 because I did not need a fax but wanted the LCD screen to be able to use this printer with or without my PC as my camera is older, without PictBridge and I liked having these options. You can get this model HP printer without the LCD and you get have this model with the LCD and with a fax!

Installation went well and was quite fast. Seemed like less than 15 minutes total. I use Windows XP with cable. To use my scanner after installation, I clicked on start in my taskbar. From there, I clicked on scanners and cameras which brought up the HP scanner icon with model number. Double click on the icon and it opens the welcome box to the scanner and camera wizard. Click next to continue and when that opens, choose your picture type (I like "custom" for the scan quality) and then click "preview". This way you can use the sizer so not to scan all the white of the lid surrounding your scanned piece (for example: a 4x6 picture). Warning: 2400 does take considerable time! On the next option it asks you what you want to do so choose your 1 of 3 options and click next. Then you can view your scan from that menu or click finish and open the file later but clicking finish opens the folder automatically for me. I didn''t find installation hard or buggy not at all. It had to be intuitive because I am an old woman and not that computer smart but I had no problem understanding this installation. No buggy software for me. I did not get a bunch of unwanted software installation but I did load the CD for HP image zone and find that I like it for a quick enhancement and printing option.

I find that I MUST use the PHOTO cartridge when printing photos!! You CAN use ONLY the tri-color and black cartridge that come with the printer and you will still get nice pictures but if you are the least bit finicky as I am, you WILL WANT TO USE THE PHOTO CARTRIDGE! It will make the world of difference in your print quality! Also, and especially if you do not use any photo imaging software, you just might want to dabble with your printer options because on those "special" pictures, you REALLY WILL see a quality difference when you learn how to tweak with these options. Wow, I have produced stunning photographs utilizing many different features. Please note: this printer uses only the newer Vivera inks. Number 95 or 97 tri-color, 94 black and 99 photo.

During the past 8 years, I have owned a Canon, an Epson and HP and have been pleased with all three. I prefer HP because I like a new printhead each time I change a cartridge.

No matter what I did, all my printers used gobs of ink and cost an arm and a leg. I had various problems with all of them yet they were all nice printers. However, I do like this model all in one because it does a bit of everything. If you are buying this just for the scanner for old family pictures and film, then this is not the scanner for you. It gets the job done and can even make great scans, providing your original is good quality but it is not a dedicated scanner for photography professionals and enthusiasts. This all in one is a great printer but is simply providing you with more just to give a little home office for a lesser price. My opinion is to go for a dedicated film and photo repair scanner if you expect to fix old film and photos.

The only difference I could find is that you can''t see the photo from your camera on the 1610 screen (you just see printing). But, if you''re doing most of the photo editing on your computer, I can''t see any reason to spend the extra money for the 2355. BTW, I just printed a 4 x 6 photo on the 1610, and it was excellent.

I have to disagree with the negative reviews. I have read all of them and it seems that, aside from two that had Software issues, or maybe a bad machine, the other negative reviews were from people that had special needs, or were using this for not what it was designed.

I needed a scanner so I bought a printer. As a rule, I don''t like to buy the multifunction machines, not for any specific reason. But I reviewed and searched and I found this printer. Again I was skeptical as it was a multifunction machine.

I had no problem with the instalation and the software was not a problem for me. I use a home made PC AMD 2400, and I am using XP Pro. I have not had a problem and it has been flawless.

I like all of the features it has to offer. The Scanner, and the Card reader is especially nice I was surprised as to how well that works. That was a plus, I thought it would work but not spectacularly, I was surprised, it works great.

To go back to the scanner it is great it will make excellent copies with a single push of a button. You can make copies with out the computer being on. It is a simple push of a button and a copy is made. Very nice.

Printing photos is easy also, and again a PC is not really needed. The printer scans from a Media Card (it will read like all of them). You see the photo in the window, and select and print.

The only problems I have found. The black ink cart is too small. The paper ''catching part'' of it is lacking. I wish they could have redesigned that part. But it is not a big problem as I would not down grade it for that.

The absolute biggest drawback is the paper feed is too small, I am always having to add more paper. It seems like the feed tray is too small. Again I am happy with it so much I can live with that as well.

It is a very nice size, and price. All of the parts of it work so well. It is a printer I will use for a very long time.

HP hardware is generally good stufflasts a long time, does a excellent job, and looks nice. The HP PSC 2355 is no exception. The quality of the printing is top notch, it is very intuitive to use, and image slots as well as screen are useful features. I especially like the fact that the print-head is built into the ink cartridge. This brings up the cost a little, but well worth it, because you are getting a brand new print-head every few months (this was a big problem with my old Epson).

For an all purpose printer, I am very pleased. It prints quietly, and quickly. I was looking for a printer that does decent scans, copies, printing and pictures at a reasonable price. This does all of that wonderfully, and the small size is very convenient too.

Of course, there is one big problem, and that is the HP software. Setting up this software is absolutely HORRIBLE. It is amazing how incompatible the HP printer drivers are with the HP digital camera drivers. I spent hours and hours trying to solve problems with HP technical support; they are absolutely useless. First, pictures wouldn''t download properly, then the computer and printer wold not communicate correctlythe list goes on and on. HP Tech support failed to solve any of my problems. I had to do it all on my own.

In summary, the printer itself is great, once you''ve got it up and running. But to get to that point, namely installing the software, is a feat in itself. Buying this may not be the best idea for those who don''t find computers intuitive.

Important to note: This does NOT come with a USB cable to connect to a computer! I luckily had one from my old printer, so it wasn''t a problem for me.

My experience with this printer has been very good!

Pros: Love the menu options, very nice prints with or without the optional photo ink cartridge. Wonderful stand alone printer/copier and even better performance when installed! Exceptionally nice photo copier with nice print options! The newer HP inks for this model certainly have lasted longer for me, giving more prints than my older HP that used cartridges 56, 57 and 58, which also gave stunning prints but did use the ink noticeably faster than does the newer Vivera ink cartridges that are made for these newer models. You can purchase a larger ink cartridge in the black and tri-colors and photo is an optional cartridge for this model printer which is only in the smaller size. The cartridge numbers are 94, 95, 97 and 99.

I get very nice scans but I do not use this scanner solely for beloved photos simply because after researching stand alone scanners which are dedicated to photography scanning VS the all in one scanners, I learned that all in one printer scanners of any brand are not actually meant to scan your precious family photos like a dedicated photo scanner would. However, I have been able to scan some photos with very satisfactory results and am very happy with the scanner. Overall, this printer is awesome!

No ink spills, bad colors, paper feed or installation issues here and I am quite happy after 4.5 months of use! I didn''t need a fax which is why I bought this model. For more money, HP has other models of the same printout quality that do come with a fax.

I am very satisfied with the color and quality of the inks. My prints are high quality, and true to life. I am a happy scrapbooker now with my HP PSC 2355 printer! Thank you!

Cons: It''s not exactly a slow printer but there are speedier printers to be had. Also that the #99 photo cartridge does not come in the larger size as the black and tri colors do.

Have had the 5130 CDN for 13 months now. The consumables are incredibly expensive and only available from Dell. We are constantly having to replace toner, the toner waste container, fuser, etc. They are all high-priced from Dell.

One month out of warranty the printer quit with an error that it needed a new belt unit. Ordered the belt unit (only available from Dell for $375.00) and installed it. At power up it gave us an 006-370 error and said to call for support.

Called for support and wasted a ridiculous amount of time on hold then being transferred to different people.

Finally spoke to a tech support person who ultimately told me that since the printer wasn''t under warranty any longer I''d have to order a "Ross Assembly"/print head and have the MCU/ESS board replaced. He also told me I''d have to hire a technician to install these parts as they are not something a customer can do. And he said that I could NOT pay to order the parts from Dell or have a Dell technician do the work, because the printer is out of warranty.

I spoke to his supervisor who treated me like an idiot and told me repeatedly that if I had just paid the extra money for the extended warranty I wouldn''t have to worry about arranging to get the printer fixed on my own.

Then I received the following email from Dell:

"The Dell part c399t is not available for sale from Dell as it is recommended to not attempt to replace it. Several parts houses do have it available (found by internet searching Dell C399T), best price for the part only we found is $795.00. This has the potential to be a $1000 repair. The recommended choice would be to replace the printer. If you need anything else please let me know."

So a 13 month old printer that Dell advertises as providing "Superb Performance" and as an "Exceptional Long Term Value" will cost more than its purchase price to repair and they recommend just replacing it. WHAT???

Our university spends literally hundreds of thousands of dollars with Dell every year and this is the "service" they provide.

Dell clearly does not stand behind the products they sell and it seems clear that unless you buy the extended warranty your equipement will fail within days of when the one year warranty expires.

So steer clear of Dell products entirely, especially this printer.

As far as printer performance I would say its great, fast, crisp colors....but I had a major issue with the printer after about 1 year, 2-3 parts completely just stopped working, I had to extend the warranty to get the parts covered, I am pretty annoyed about ti because the printer had less then 10k pages printed on it when all this happened....for 1200-1500 dollars I expected to have no problems with it, but I got just the opposite, I would definitely recommend going to another company if you want a quality product...

I have owned many different laser printers from HP, Dell, Lexmark, Brother and Samsung. This printer beats them all for three reasons:

I previously owned a LaserJet 6L which was a reliable printer in its day. Since then, I''ve purchased several color printers from other manufacturers. I went back to HP for their reliability.

This printer quickly prints documents, especially with the built-in duplexer. I can send a print job to it and the first page (one sided) is coming out of the printer in two seconds.

The down side is the cost of toner. Normally, I have the print density set at 2 out of 5, which is on the light side. Using Econo mode does save toner, but the text is more difficult to read in low light conditions, so I rarely use that mode.

The sample toner (allegedly 1000 pages) included with the printer printed less than 400 pages before white streaks in the text began appearing. After installing a new cartridge (78A) just 4 days ago and printing 760 pages, the printer is reporting that 30% (or 300 pages) is left. At over $83 per cartridge, including tax, that comes out to 8 cents per page. I just purchased 2 toners at $49 to help save money.

But to call this a "green" printer, when one has to replace the toner cartridge after only 1060 pages, is silly.

I''ve owned two HP LaserJet printers over the last 22 years. A LaserJet IIP and a LaserJet 5L. Bought the IIP in 1989, and it was great. When the 5L came out in 1995, I chose to upgrade. That 5L lasted until 2 days ago -a bit more than 15 years! I figure 15+ years out of any piece of computing equipment means I got way more than my money''s worth, thus I chose to purchase another HP LaserJet.

The good stuff:

This new LaserJet P1606dn Pro printer is so amazingly FAST! I''ve been used to 4 pages-per-minute (PPM) for so long, that this printer''s 26-PPM speed just blows me away! And the fact that it''s got a built-in duplexer (prints on both sides automatically, if you tell it to) is just icing on the cake -no more printing every other page, then flipping the stack of paper and re-feeding it through to get the back sides of the pages. Fantastic! (I printed a 12-page document with duplex-printing enabled, and it did the job in about 35 seconds from start to finish. Very impressive! Turn duplex off, and it will print a bit faster -but you''re not saving money on paper that way.)

Setup of the P1606dn Pro was incredibly easy. I simply plugged it into my computer''s USB port, turned on the printer, and got a pop-up-window from the printer''s built-in software saying that it wanted to install the driver. Boom. Done. Easy. (I''m running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, but I''d imagine your experience would be the same with any version of Windows 7 or Vista or XP.)

The paper try holds about 3 times what the paper tray on my old LaserJet 5L held -re-loading a lot less often is a nice thing as well. And the "auxiliary" feed (where you feed envelopes, for example) can hold about 10 of ''em, instead of the one-at-a-time thing that I had on the 5L -another very nice feature.

I did not try to enable the printer''s built-in network features. I plugged it into a computer and then shared the printer with my network that way. So I cannot comment at all on the ease (or lack thereof) of the Ethernet setup on this printer.

Now the bad stuff:

They didn''t include ANY cables to attach this to the computer! Are you kidding me?! Just the power cable. So you absolutely MUST buy yourself a USB cable or an Ethernet cable if you don''t want it to be a $200 paperweight. It *does* say on the outside of the box that there isn''t a USB cable included, but it''s not immediately clear on Amazon''s web-site. So here''s your warning: BUY A USB CABLE OR AN ETHERNET CABLE WITH THIS PRINTER BECAUSE IT DOESN''T INCLUDE EITHER IN THE BOX!

The toner-cartridge that is included with the printer is only about half-full. (Maybe a little less). It''s designed to print about 1,000 pages, whereas a new toner-cartridge is designed to print around 2,100 pages. Please... I''d be willing to pay a few $$ extra to have a full toner-cartridge included with the printer... That''s just ridiculous... So, you''ll probably want to buy a new toner cartridge when you buy this printer. And, yes, new toner cartridges are expensive -but HP toner cartridges have *always* been expensive for every HP LaserJet I''ve owned. It''s the price you pay for the high-quality printing you get out of these printers. And it still beats the cost-per-page of an InkJet.

Summary:

I would''ve given this printer a 5-star rating, if they''d included a USB cable and a full toner-cartridge. Instead I bumped it down to 4 stars. The printer itself gets 5-stars -fantastic speed, reliability, quality of the printed document, etc -everything I''ve come to expect from an HP LaserJet over the many years that I''ve owned them. Disclaimer: I just bought this printer. I have only printed about 300 pages with it. I bought this printer to replace an aging HP Laserjet Model 4P.

Initial thoughts: WOW! This thing is super-fast. The double-sided printing is AMAZING. The text is crisp and clean. It''s easy on toner, and has an economy mode (although I haven''t tested it yet).

I can''t say enough about how fast and smooth this printer is. I cued up a 300 page service manual I had in PDF form. The whole thing was printed and ready for reading in under 5 minutes.

One of the neatest features is that it goes completely silent and in low-power mode when not in use: you don''t have to turn it on, it senses when you want to print, turns itself on, prints, and then shuts itself off.

It''s a bit on the noisy side but I really don''t care about that.

Overall, money well spent.

After a few hours of playing tittly-winks with HP Technical Support, having them go on and on about how I can''t use this in a "business environment" and how "it doesn''t support printing via ethernet" (I really wish I was joking about that one, but the technician actually said that), I was just about to throw my hands up in the air Until I happened to try the PCL version of the HP Universal Print Driver And then it started working like a champ!

I generally make a habbit of only using HP Universal Drivers and installing both PCL and PS versions on my Windows 2003 print server so I:

A) Don''t have to worry about maintaining individual drivers for all of the HP C/LJ''s around my office.

and

B) If someone needs to use PCL or Post Script, each of them are there as seperate printer instances so my users can connect to them any time they need either version.

My issue was when testing to make sure I could print to this device before maping a user to this printer I was only testing with the Post Script instance of the printer. I suppose I should also mention that when I told HP I had a print server handling jobs (good practice when you have an office full of printers and prefer keeping your hair on your head rather than between your fingers as you pull them out), and that I had established a DHCP reservation so the printer would obtain IP information dynamically, but always be given the same address let''s just say that drove HP technical support up a wall; almost to the point where they just about put the kibosh on the entire support call. I suppose the kind of training that goes into those that support these is different than those that support, say, LJ 8150s.

The end result was after being told:

A) I had a bad toner cartridge (at which point jumped through the proverbial hoop and went out to buy a spare)

B) There were "multiple" bad ports on my Extreme Networks Summit X450-48p switch (yeah right, pretty sure I would have noticed that)

C) That ethernet printing was either "not supported entirely" or that at most it was "only supported being connected to a home Linksys router"

D) Not having enough paper loaded into the device (even when it was full)

We finally came to find that when a print job is sent via the Post Script driver this printer TANKS.

And when I say "tanks", I mean:

A) Web interface stops working

B) Ping requests time out

C) The NIC completly shuts down (link light drops offline)

D) The printer appears to restart / re-initialize (yellow lights flicker on the top)

E) You have to wait 15-20 seconds for it to come back up

Worse yet, after being sent a job via PS (and it subsequently goes into it''s fit of rage), it usually requires a restart to remain stable. I found this out because while testing I had a continuous ping going throughout all of this, and it would randomly time out long after the restart / reinitializing sequence was complete even when no job was being sent. The only way to get it to remain stable again was to completely shut it off and reboot. WOW What a joke!

Moral of the story, I''m rating this a 4 because if you don''t even think Post Script, it''s actually a good light-duty (all I''m planning on using it for) printer that absolutly WILL work in a network environment (in a business or otherwise). Just make sure you don''t try to use a Post Script driver, unless you enjoy making your brain hurt watching your printer act a fool for no apparent reason.

PS: I generally NEVER write reviews about things (even though, full disclosure, I read them all the time). That said, the wasted afternoon I spent troubleshooting this was SUCH A PAIN IN THE REAR that I couldn''t resist the temptation to share my experiance with those of you wanting to pick this puppy up.
