I really like the look of this fax machine, and I love the fact that it''s compact and doesn''t take up much space. I haven''t received any faxes yet, so I don''t know how well the prints will look. So far, I''m having a lot of trouble faxing things out though. I''ve sent faxes 4 times, and 2 of the 4 times, the receiver received missing pages. They sent me a PDF of what I had faxed them, and the missing pages just showed up as a blank pages.

I already threw out the box, so I can''t even return it. I feel like the machine was a waste of money.

Interestingly enough, by the time the new model was delivered the old one started to work again, so now I''m looking for a home for it.

What I like better about this Ultra-compact design is that it''s even smaller than the previous one. We have very limited space and this is perfect. One disappointment: we can''t use the same size film, but that''s understandable since the span between the manufacturing time is so great.

I''ve been a user of HP printers for many years now, most recently a Photosmart C7250 All-In-One. The new HP Officejet 4500 Wireless has many of the capabilities of the C7250 for a much lower price. Both are inkjet printers, of course, both are color fax machines, both can copy in black-and-white or color, both have a high-resolution scanner with document feeder and both have wireless connectivity.

Of course you do give up some things for the lower (by about half) price: the 4500 has only a black and a tricolor ink cartridge with integrated print heads (the C7250 has six independent ink tanks), the 4500 lacks automatic two-side printing, lacks "photo printing" (though it does a decent job at printing images), and doesn''t have a built-in card reader. The 4500 is also considerably smaller, which can be an advantage in a small or home office.

Setting up the 4500 is easy. Even if you are going to use it wirelessly, you must connect it by USB to a PC (or Mac) for the initial installation. After it is set up, you can disconnect the USB and run wireless-only. A 3-foot USB cable is provided, which I consider too short, but at least it''s there, unlike with many other printers. The software installed smoothly for me, which was a novelty I''ve had a lot of trouble with the latest HP software for my C7250. In addition to the standard printer software, HP includes a basic I.R.I.S. OCR capability. I tried the OCR and it did a good job of capturing the text, but it lost all formatting. OmniPage it ain''t.

I was pleased to find that the network setup was handled through the PC (or Mac) software during the initial install I was not looking forward to having to enter network keys on the printer''s keypad. I use WPA2-AES wireless and the HP 4500 had no problem with it.

When you install the ink cartridges the printer spits out an alignment sheet which you then scan in so it can see how the print heads line up. Clear prompts appeared on the lighted LCD panel on the printer and this was easy.

I tried a variety of printing tasks and the 4500 handled them all well. Text was clear and colored backgrounds showed no banding. Although this is not a photo printer, it did a passable job printing a photograph on plain paper. The scanner worked well too, both using the glass and the document feeder. Printing is quiet and fast.

Faxing I thought a bit awkward you use the left-right arrow buttons to select color or b+w fax, enter the number (or use the address book), then press the green start button. It then asks you to press 1 if you''re scanning from the glass or 2 from the feeder, which I found annoying. However, the faxing worked well, and when the number was busy, it automatically retried after one minute and then five minutes. HP includes a special phone cord which you are supposed to use for the fax connection. I don''t know what is special about it, but if you use a regular cord you must use a small adapter that HP also provides.

HP claims that the 4500 meets EnergyStar requirements, so I tested power consumption. When the 4500 was turned off, my meter read zero (the meter does not register tenths.) When on and idle, 2 watts; when actively printing, 10-15 watts and when in standby mode, 1 watt. I thought this exemplary.

The only real gripe I have is a minor one the paper feed tray (which doubles as the output tray) sticks out from the front quite a bit. It does have a retractable output catcher, so it''s not as bad as it could be. However, I understand this is a trade-off for the box being so small.

The "901" ink cartridges are not insanely expensive, but I don''t know how long they last. HP claims that cost-per-page is lower with the HP Officejet 6500. If your usage is modest, the HP Officejet 4500 may be just what you need at a very reasonable price. If you print a lot, you may want a model with a higher-capacity paper tray, and of course if you print photos, there are better choices. All in all, a very competent and modestly priced all-in-one device. Recommended.

I traded in a perfectly good HP All-in-One (circa 2001) for the convenience of wireless printing from a laptop. I''ve had the printer one month; am I sorry I bought the 4500 Wireless. Other than the wireless feature, I can''t say anything positive about this device. It has frequent paper jams; the scanner turns white paper backgrounds into an ivory color background (making it difficult to paste scanned images like signatures into other documents with white backgrounds); it''s very slow; black text often comes out gray, or worse yet, light green (!). This is about the worst printer I''ve ever purchased. I was a longtime HP supporter until I purchased this device. HP, you lost my loyalty.

I have had 4 HP printers and so did not expect this model would be so hard to deal with. I constantly need to convince the machine it has paper, adjusting and readjusting. It also will enter a sleep mode and the only way to wake it up so I can print is to unplug it and plug it back in. The faxing commands using the buttons are not intuitive or logical. All in all I will make a different decision next time.

This product is an upgrade from an older OfficeJet all-in-one machine (5610v). It definitely has both pros and cons.

The folks at HP have thought of every detail, right down to the unpacking. The plastic the printer is wrapped in is actually a BAG with handles, so there is no wrestling to get it out of the box. Everything needed to get set up is included in the box, right down to the ink cartridges and telephone cable. Both ink cartridges are the same number (one is then labeled "color" and the other "black-and-white"), making it easier to remember which cartridge you need. The machine is fairly compact, the controls are very intuitive, and it was very easy to install (even with an uncooperative computer which, for reasons completely unrelated to the printer, shut down four times during the brief installation process). I was a bit thrown by the fact that there is only one paper tray, rather than separate trays for input and output. It will, apparently, also print "borderless," for brochures and such. I have not yet tried this feature.

Unfortunately, not everything about the OfficeJet 4500 is this peachy. The biggest selling point of this machine, for me, was that it can be used wirelessly, which would make it much easier for us to print to it from our two separate computers. I was never able to successfully set up this feature. When the "wizard" fails to set up the wireless network, there is no other option or information given no clue as to what went wrong, no alternate method for entering the information, etc. It just doesn''t work. This is a bigger problem than one might think, as the included USB cable is rather short. At the moment, I can''t print to this printer without putting the printer in my desk chair and hooking it up. (And then I have to unplug it between uses.)

Receiving a fax is unnecessarily difficult, as well, for users without a dedicated fax line. On my old OfficeJet, the fax and my telephone could easily share a line. When I answered the phone and heard fax signals, all I had to do was punch "1,2,3," and hang up after I heard the fax machine click on. It never interfered with my regular phone usage, but I didn''t have to fuss with controls on the machine to receive a fax, either. I''m not sure why HP couldn''t do the same thing with this machine. Installation of the ink cartridges was not intuitive, in my opinion. And the plastic the printer is made of looks chintzy. (It may not be; it just has this look. A more matte plastic would have appeared sturdier.)

All in all, it''s a good machine; it just has its quirks. The wireless difficulty is a real issue, but everything else is mostly a matter of familiarity.

I have also been a long time user of HP Printers. I am beginning to rethink this. I don''t know if HP sees the ink cartridge market as a cash cow for them or what but I have never had to buy so many ink cartridges with their other printers. I use an eco friendly font but still seem to be buying twice as many ink cartridges with this model. I wish I had never replaced my HP 6300.

I''ve had this unit replaced twice now.

In theory, this is an awesome product. When it''s working, it very quickly scans large documents to a network location, which is great. The problem is that, most of the time, it suffers from multiple-feeds and paper jams. The paralegals in our office have resorted to single-page feeding this unit instead of putting a stack in and letting it run.

I''m not sure who did the QA testing on this scanner. The 220p has occasional jams but seems to work pretty well once the rollers are broken in. This version, however, has never worked as expected.

In short, it cost us a whole ton on money to buy a scanner that doesn''t work as advertised. The unit creates more problems than it solves.

In addition, the setup is non-intuitive. I hold MCSA/MCSE and SEC+ certifications and it took me a good afternoon to get everything up and running properly. The Fax portion needs to be removed, it''s useless to anyone who isn''t actually running a fax server in the office. Having the button on the primary interface is confusing. The email option only works with an open-relay, which is useless to 99% of all email setups. LDAP address book integration is limited to something like 99 contacts, which is unhelpful considering the size of most contact lists in the internet age.

Avoid.

Simply put, if you have an Epson photo inkjet printer, you need to be using this paper. We bought this after a big trip to the UK and Europe to print out my digital pics for my still analog mother. Needless to say, she wants a digital camera very badly for Christmas now.

Its so easy to just pull your memory card from your camera, plug it into the printer and be able to zoom, crop and do basic editing (color balance, etc) right on the printer. We aren''t even going to hook it up to a computer, becuase if you''re just using it for pictures theres almost no need.

I looked at the 8450 with networking and 8 print nozzles, but didn''t think it was worth $80 more. Like I said, we arent even hooking it to a printer, let alone our network, and frankly I do not know how noticeable 2 more print nozzles are going to be when the pictures look this spectacular in the first place.

Print speed is surprisingly fast, as I''ve been seeing 30seconds for a borderless 4x6.

I recently got this printer as a gift, and I have had great luck printing more than 250 4"x6" prints, some on 8.5x11, and some on Kodak 4"x6.25" stock (leaves a little handle for your prints). The pitcures are very good, with only a little bronzing, which seems to make the prints jump at you. The images were from a 5 megapixel Canon, so they were pretty rich.

I printed from 200dpi images from PhotoShop, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and HP Image Zone (or whatever it is.) Windows is the best of the three for batch jobs. The HP software was klunky, as always. Let''s face it, they are not software developers.

I also printed some retouched black and whites, and there was some graining with enlargements, but the overall effect was very good. There was some color artifacting (pink or blue tint) to the black and whites, but I just found out HP makes a grayscale photo cartridge for this printer, so I will get that and I am sure there will be no extra colors.

I printed to both glossy and matte, and the images were excellent. With heavy blue saturations the ink takes longer to dry, so watch out you don''t smudge your skies or other blue backgrounds.

The printer does go through cartridges, though. I have replaced the photo cartridge (black, light cyan, light magenta) three times for about 300 prints, so 100 each (4x6) is probably the rule of thumb. It also uses a true cyan, yellow, magenta cartridge which doesn''t seem to run out as fast. Color reproduction is excellent while the ink lasts.

I''ve been hemming and hawing over which photo printer to by since I bought my digital camera. I didn''t have enough sense to think it through and by the scanner, printer, and camera all at the same time. I thought I would just use the Kodak kiosk like i''ve been doing. That lasted about a week.

The three main contenders were the HP photosmart 8450 because it was highly rated and had 8 ink cartridges, and memory card slots

The HP photosmart 8750 because it printed up to 13"x19" and it had the memory card slots,

The canon i9900 because it was supposed to be the absolute best for the serious amateur had 8 ink tanks and printed large, downside though, no memory card reader.

So why didn''t I buy any of these and instead got the HP photosmart 8150? It''s quite simple actually for two ink tanks less i.e. six instead of eight, it cost 100.00 dollars less where I bought it or 60.00 dollars less on Amazon. I got it home, pulled it out and installed the software. For some reason you have to install the software first then connect the printer. I was up and running in 10-20 minutes, (there''s alot of software it comes with photo editing software and scrapbook assistant)plugged in my SD card and printed my first photo five minutes later (I was playing with the menu, it''s NOT slow). You can edit right on the printer screen theres some fun effects and borders that you can do. Color was amazing worked right the first time. And the really cool thing is that it has two trays built in. One is for letter sized paper and the other is for 4"x6" photo paper you just slide a switch to engage the photo paper.

Some things to consider:

-Blasted thing doesn''t come with the 2.0 USB cord I had to steal the cord off of my new CanoScan.

-It takes a LOT of room on your hard drive 600MB yes over half a gig.

-It''s big it''s about twice the size of my normal printer

-If you''re going to be doing a lot of black and white printing, the gray ink cartridge HP 100 is NOT included

-It does come with photo paper

-It does have memory card capability.

-One other thing, this may be a duh thing to those in the know, but for a newbie, when you are putting the photo paper in the printer it goes glossy side DOWN with the tear tab towards you. I just slapped it in there and ended up printing on the wrong side, which actually made for a neat effect but you do want to print on the correct side.

I highly recommend it. Glad I didn''t buy the Canon i9900; right now that would be gilding the lily.

This printer is a workhorse right out of the box. After going to Target and trying to use their "Photo Print Station", I gave up trying and purchased this printer on a whim. I needed to get some shots off to relatives who do not believe in using Ofoto.

From the start I was impressed with its speed, clear quality, and features. I could take photos one moment, insert my digital card into the printer, edit them, and print them on the fly.

I was a long time EPSON fan and was impressed with HP''s leap in their user interface and technology. The price of the ink, paper, and printer make this purchase a great investment for its nominal cost. Other printers with the same technology usually get the consumer with the price of ink and paper. The INK cartridges last until the very last drop and are go much farther than the EPSON brands.

For those of us who have already invested in a PC with multimedia capabilities (large memory, HD, and software), this is a great addition to your collection without the big chunk into your wallet.

However, it does have some limitations.

1.) Paper Jams using the 4x6 paper can be daunting, it took me a while to manually fish out my 4x6 paper to clear the last jam.

2.) The printer only allows up to 15 sheets of any HP photo premium paper at a time without jamming, this means that if you are printing a large batch of shots, you need to stay by your PC or printer to constantly feed.

3.) You need to stick with the VIVATRA inks and HP photo paper to keep the high quality. As with other companies, it is a marketing tool that promotes their high quality and fade resistant promise. Luckily, Amazon offers their products for a reasonable price, but you need to wait weeks for them to arrive.

4.) You are limited to 8x10 as your largest print. My EPSON 1280 printed banners and large 16x20 prints. However, if you are a member of companies such as OFOTO, Snapfish, or Shutterfly, you can print send off for those sizes.

Other than that, I would purchase this printer again. I make photo memory quilts and originally invested in EPSON 5 years ago because of their promise for ink resistancy.

However, I am happy to say that HP now can provide the same effort without the steep price. As a result, I was able to purchase a replacement printer and keep up with my craft.

Great quality, easy user interface, and best price.

Clearing up redeye from photo cards is a major reason to choose the HP PhotoSmart 8150 and 8450 over HP''s 7760 or all Canon or Epson printers.

In looking for a printer for my daughter for Christmas, I settled on HP PhotoSmart 8150 for its size, convenience, and especially for the redeye removal from photos. However, when I tried to remove the redeye from a photo of my granddaughter on an SD card, the whole printer froze with a yellow screen and an error code (TBD). I did this at Office Depot.

I went to Office Max and Best Buy to find the same result, trying to remove redeye on three different 8150s. Of interest, the same thing also occured with the 8450.

Using the same photo on the SD card, I was able to remove redeye on comparable HP models 375, 2355, 2610, and 2710 in different stores.

Once the printer locked up, pressing the cancel and on/off buttons did not clear the problem. I had to unplug the power to restart the 8150 and 8450 printers.

Interestingly, the small HP 375 seemed to use the same algorithm as the 8150 and the 8450. This algorithm showed the photo when checking for redeye and cleared it (on the 375) or stated "No redeye detected" on photos without redeye. The other printers showed a "working" generic screen and did not state clearly if redeye was removed or not.

I will amend this review when I find the error code.

I''ve owned 4 or 5 other Epson printers (as well as several from HP) in the past, but the Stylus Photo RX580 all-in-one is the easiest to use printer I''ve ever had, with excellent picture quality and a very good built-in scanner as well. Combine that with the fact that it is the least expensive of the printers I have bought and you''ll see why I consider this a bargain.

Let me start with the scanner -it is quiet and fairly fast. The supplied TWAIN compatible software has three levels: fully automatic, "home" use, and professional. It works well. The resolution is fine for home use, although it is not a scanner for film or slides. The scanner integrates with the printer allowing use as a stand-alone copier. It can also copy photos directly to the face of an (inkjet printable) CD or DVD. And there are some interesting surprises -you can print an index of a memory card -then fill in a few choices (with a black pencil or pen -like a test answer sheet) and scan the index sheet and the printer will print photos from the memory card, only the photos you choose on the index sheet, sized and borders as you selected. Very cool -and easy to use. The scanner also allows you to directly prepare greeting cards without the computer.

The print quality is quite good. The Claria inks are dye-based inks (NOT pigment, as incorrectly stated in other reviews) giving them bright colors, and able to print on many surfaces. This is one of Epson''s "Hi-Definition" printers -which means tiny droplets and great pictures. The inks are separately replaceable, and available in two sizes (regular and high capacity -from Epson direct -50% more ink for only $5 more). The printer works best with Epson papers, and can print on virtually any stock Epson sells. It also creates excellent prints directly on printable CDs and DVDs -the results can look very good, and are much better than add -on labels.

The 2.5" built in color LCD is very useful -it allows meaningful dialogues with the printer as well as previews of images from memory cards, etc.

The printer is fully Mac compatible (as well as PC) and includes some useful software, including a CD/DVD print layout program.

What does it lack? Well, an USB cable -but, unfortunately, most prints ship without a cable. It doesn''t do paper sizes bigger than 8.5" wide, and its not aimed at professional photographers (who want larger images, higher resolution scanners, and more permanent pigment inks), but for home/office use it works quite well.

All in all an excellent all-in-one at a reasonable price. I''m very happy with it.

My wife and I bought this mainly to print on DVDs/CDs, but we have discovered that this can do so much more! This is really an impressive product. Here is what we have tried so far.

1. Printing on DVDs/CDs--outstanding quality and the ink dries quickly.

2. Scanning--better than our HP 1315v (which we like) and a lot quieter.

3. Copying--only done black and white so far but it was crisp.

Things we look forward to trying: making our own family photos without having to pay high prices at a portrait studio (any size we want too); printing pics off of a PDA or cell phone; printing our own greeting cards by selecting what we want with a pencil or pen and then scanning our selections; printing photos on our choice of paper by marking our selections with a pencil and scanning the results and doing this all PC-free!

We haven''t found anything we dislike about this product but we have noticed a couple of things. First, your text/copies/pictures will look good depending on your quality of paper. We noticed that on cheap letter paper heavy amounts of ink will make the paper a little wet. It''s no big deal if it is something unimportant. Second, we didn''t like all of Epson''s backgrounds for the DVDs/CDs. We liked the ones from Memorex''s Expressit Label Design Studio a little better. So after some tinkering, my wife was able to convert Memorex''s backgrounds (using Corel Photo Album 6) into jpgs and put them into Epson''s folder of backgrounds. So that has worked great.

We really thought the small ink cartridges would be a problem but after printing about 5 CDs and some other small graphics the ink levels haven''t even moved. A coworker has an RX550 and has cautioned to remove the ink cartridges from the printer if you are going to be gone on a long trip (say more than a week). He was gone over a month and says the lack of use caused the ink to dry out. He had to get new cartridges and run the maintenance cycle 6 or 7 times to get back on track. We will probably take the cartridges out and seal them up when we go on long trips.

Overall this is a GREAT product! We are impressed and look forward to using it a lot!

November 11, 2006 UPDATE: Since we wrote this same review on Circuit City''s website, we still think this is a GREAT printer. The images printed on DVDs/CDs are excellent. We have noticed that it uses ink a little faster than non-photo printers but the color(s) that get used depend on the color of your images. That makes sense to us. We didn''t have any major problems with software installation. The only snag is that it wants to restart your computer before it is finished setting everything up. We were able to make choices and finish the setup (including the calibration page) by clicking on our choices in the background. After we were done, we clicked on the Windows message box in the foreground to restart the computer. It''s really no big deal.

Three more things. First, we still haven''t tried out all of the features. Second, when the printer first sucks in the paper it is a little noisy. It startles you, but you don''t need ear plugs. We quickly got used to it though. We can stand a little noise for great print quality. Third, after scouring the internet it looks like Newegg has the best deal on ink cartridges for this printer. We didn''t see any high capacity ink cartridges on their site but we figure that this will change eventually. Also, we figure that prices will come down a little once the regular capacity and high capacity cartridges become available at more businesses.

I thing this printer is really good at each of its features. I have been very impresed with its printing of 4x6 pictures, which is the main reason we bought it. The pictures are very clear and well basically they look like they are supposed to. We have printed several pictures up to 8x10 and the quality does not have much of a drop off if any at all.

The scanner works well as well. We scanned a few pictures of Fenway taken with a 35mm. Instantly I was on the editor, first time using the software, and I made the picture look better than the one I scanned. I reprinted the picture and it looks very nice. Almost like being there again watching Pedro beat Mussina!

As far as black printing, for text, it leaves something to be desired. I usually would print my old all in one (Lexmark 125) on draft quality and it printed out fairly well. On draft quality here, it does not print very dark at all. I was disappointed in that, but when you change settings it looks sharp. It just uses more ink.

I was really impressed with the print to CD thing. I have never been able to do that, so the first time my wife and I tried it, and it turned out as well as it did, we were very happy.

Really good printer, considered this and the HP c5180, and choose this because it appeared to be better for pictures.

Works as advertised as a printer, card reader, and copier, but the scanning is only fair. The print quality on Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy (S041727) is outstanding, and at least as good, if not better than Wallyworld photo center or even the more expensive Kodak Perfect Picture mail-out prints. I''m printing 2 and 5 megapixel digital photos, and both turn out great. I''ve printed from computer and directly from the memory card, and the speed and quality are equally good in either mode.

If the scanner was good for anything but basic copying, I''d give this 4 or 5 stars. Even at very high DPI settings, a scan of a photograph is terrible. The scanner does not pick up a good range of color regardless of the settings you use. The scan function doesn''t even come close to the cheapo HP 2200C I bought for $10 at a garage sale. The "scan" function will be adequate for the kids'' school work and a couple of document copies you may need around the house or school, but don''t get this if you need it for high quality scans.

-1.5 stars for bad scanning, and -.5 stars for high ink consumption rate and cost.

I''ve read the reviews and not one of them mentioned the fantastic feature of photo restoration. I have restored many yellow 1960''s and 1970''s pictures and they look like I took them today. The colors are fantastic!! This printer even restores polaroid pictures. I have also printed copies of recent pictures and they too look wonderful. A professional photographer talked me into this printer and I''m so glad he did!! Everything else on the printer works well, as well.

This is by far the best printer I have ever used. The only concern I would have is that if you don''t have much space, you might be in trouble, but that would be the case with almost any other all in one (this is a little bigger than normal though). I already had a fax, so the fact it didn''t have that feature wasn''t a big letdown, but if you have to have a fax, I would still go with Canon (cheapest cartridges and great quality). When you turn the printer on, or if you haven''t used it in a while, it will make wierd noises (I guess its "warming up"?) for 20-30 seconds, but then its good to go for a while.

I would definitely suggest this printer to anyone looking for a great multifunction printer, especially if on a budget.

I have had many printers and multifunction printers but this one has to be the best of the lot. It is easy to set up and the photo prints I have printed have had the best colors and no blurring what so ever of the lines. There are two paper trays so I keep photo paper in one and plain paper in the other so I do not have to physically get up and change out the paper. The MP500 has a smaller footprint than other multifunction printers which saves space. You can connect your camera directly to the printer or insert the camera memory card or print from your computer. This is a wonderful product and Canon knows what people want and need with a reasonable price.

I am very impressed. I have had my printer for about a week and have enjoyed every moment. I have found it easy to use and the picture editing software is good.

I agree with all the positive reviews I have found here (except for statements about "small footprint on the desk" this thing is rather large) and only want to add one comment. This printer gets amazing mileage from its ink cartridges. Yes, they are quite inexpensive (hooray!), but I want to emphasize that they also last a very long time. My family uses this printer on a daily basis (we don''t print many photos, I must admit) and I am only now replacing some of the color inkwells for the first time, after nearly six months of use! I have replaced the main black cartridge (there is one for text, one for color printing) once already but that is once in six months!

I purchased the Pixma MP500 a few months ago and left it in the box as I wanted to buy a "real nice" scanner of another brand instead. Well, the real nice scanner (over $400)was a great disappointment. Today, because my old HP printer was out of ink, I decided to break the Pixma out of the box. I didn''t expect too much. I tried some scans of color documents. I nearly fell out of my chair. They were 3x faster and 10x better than the expensive scanner. True to color, nice and crisp....every single one. I''m also very pleased with the intuitive, easy-to-use software. I can''t think of any improvement I would make other than a legal size bed. The printer was also very quick and again, true to color. Anyway, I''m sold!! Can''t wait to use the other features, particularly in conjunction with my Canon camera. If it was possible I would rate this product 10 stars.

Many other reviewers have already made the point, I can only affirm it. For the price, it''s a great calculator but the instructions are awful and very difficult to follow. I ended up spending $12 after the fact for replacement ink cartridges because not only are the directions/illustrations unclear about how to install the ink cartridge, but if one is not careful, the cartridge slips out of your fingers and easily becomes irretrievably lost inside the guts of the calculator. (I can hear it rattling around in there, but cannot get it out.) Be warned, local supply stores'' listing of replacement cartridges will not have this model listed in their stores, so be sure to ask and make sure that you get the proper replacement cartridge (the HR 100 is NOT the same as the HR 100TM; I learned the hard way.)

I work in IT and work on a lot of printers and multifunction devices. A lot of my clients have the Xerox Phaser 8500 series printers and multifunction devices, and so far they have either been happy with them.

The 8560MFP/D is the multifunction version of the Phaser 8560 printer. I reviewed the Phaser, and it''s a great machine. Excellent print quality, fast print speeds, lots of features, simple to use and set up. It had a few gremlins, but they were manageable and nothing major. The MFP is no different. It adds scanning, copying, and faxing abilities. Mechanically, every function works very good. I am especially impressed with the scanner and copier. Scans were completed in less than 6 seconds.

You can do Adobe Postscrip or PCL3, PDF, or JPEG outputs with customizable templates. You can plug it in USB or use it over a network with an ethernet connection. It doesn''t have WiFi capability, but that''s not such a bad thing for a commercial device. It''s good for home users, but WiFi can be too unreliable for a business setting where reliability is key. There are buttons for each function, and a separate menu on the display for each function with its own parameters and settings. The menus were a little confusing to use and there are a lot of functions to navigate through, so there is a learning curve. I think Xerox could have made the menus a little easier to understand, especially for someone who''s not technically savvy, but with that many functions and parameters it would have been difficult.

The instructions were about useless, and I am thinking they''re meant for the IT department. On the plus side, when the printer is first installed, it will print out a status page and configuration pages that include a layout of the various menus and submenus to make navigating them a little easier. I thought that is a very nice touch and so far all of the newer 8500 series ColorCubes/Phasers have this function. The CD-ROM software also includes a set-up video, which is weird because they also include instructions in the box.

The MFP is designed for high volume printing, with a max rating of 6,000 pages or 85,000 images per month. Like the Phaser, this machine uses the same wax ink cubes that make the prints come out with a raised look which makes the text and graphics "pop." The downside is that you can''t hot laminate the prints as the heat would melt the ink and make it smudge. On the upside, you can use the same type of media as traditional laser printers without having to worry about things melting because this isn''t a "thermal" type imaging system. The Phaser works like an inkjet, but the ink for this is actually a waxy liquid that''s sprayed onto the paper in sections, one for each color, and then blended to make different colors. It''s a little like a can of spray paint, except it''s wax. Pretty ingenious.

You can''t really turn it off as the ink is kept in a liquid state inside the machine, and when the power is turned off or it''s reset and the heater stops working, the printer ejects the melted ink into a waste tank to keep it from solidifying and clogging the print head. The ink cubes last a long time, but are expensive at around $140 for a set, and when combined with the fact you have to keep it turned on all the time makes the MFP, like the Phaser, mainly suited for a commercial application. It will hold over 600 sheets of paper up to 32lb stock, and you can add extra storage to it. You could use it at home, but it''s huge and heavy and would take up a lot of space, so not really that practical for a home user.

For all the good things about the MFP, I can testify to the other reviewers'' comments about the dreadful and clunky scanning software. In a word it is horrible. I just did a job to fix a very buggy and unreliable scan utility that would lock up before and during a scan, requiring a force close and sometimes a reboot. I had to go back today to fix the other MFP in the same office that had the same problem. It took 3 hours (lots of money) to rectify the problem and get it working again. That was a good sized bill for the customer for a malfunctioning and buggy scan software. The printer worked just fine, which is what I have come to expect from Epson.

As much as I don''t like the scanner software, I still gave it 4 stars just because I really like the 8500 series. Xerox needs to go back to the drawing board with the scanning software, but otherwise this is a fantastic multifunction machine. The software problem, however, might be enough to deter some buyers. Granted, this is a random occurrance, but still something to keep in mind.

My customers are happy with them (Just had another one buy a ColorCube!).

This is expensive, full of problems and piece of junk machine. Inks cost a fortune and this eats them up (or melts them) even if you are not suing the machine. Takes good five minutes to warm up before any print comes out. Seems like I have to add ink everytime I print and it costs a fortune for a single print. Never buy a solid ink printer from them. Would like to get rid of this for cents let alone dollars.

Poor value overall, and after 2 years the machine jams on every page printed now. I am not even going to call out the repair guy. If I can get $50 selling this on ebay it will be good ridance for a dog of a performer. Buy a Fujitsu Scan Snap S510 if you want an excellent scanner.

I have always purchased HP''s for myself and my company, and always had two sided print. However, when I purchased a second HP for myself, I thought that feature was included in the system. But, surprisingly, it did not, and I learned that HP markets this feature separately for about $80. The reason I like the duplexer is because it does save paper, great for greeting cards, easy to install, and allows card stock. However, it will not support support 8 1/2" x 11" photo paper (Big Time Jams). Its support center puts you through a number of ineffective steps, but in truth there is no way to solve that problem. The duplexer sticks out 2 1/2" in the back of the printer.

It is a bit bigger and make impression of better solid quality than contemporary duplex models of thinner plastic. If you still use a compatible printer, it is highly recommended, especially as it is so really cheap now.

I love these cards! I use Cook''n Recipe Organizer 9 software to keep a digital copy of my recipes and use these postcards to print them out. I am a small business looking for a product that is thick enough to resale small quantities of postcards. Found another supplier online that has a little thicker product that I am now using. Part of the problem is the limits of the Laser printer. The printer will only handle a certain thickness of paper. This is on the thin side. This product may work for printing cards to mail in another envelope or not mail at all. But if you are looking for something to standup in the mailing process this is not it.

For an inexpensive printer it does a very good job. Good print quality and speed with some noise. PLEASE check the reviews of the replacement cartridge #60. I have NEVER gone through print cartridges as fast as with this printer. I use draft mode (still very good quality) to conserve ink. Still uses them up very fast. HP claims quantity of pages would be 200--good luck!

I needed an inexpensive inkjet printer for a new computer with Windows 7 (my older printer was not compatible with the new software), and after looking around bought the HP Deskjet D2680 for its value proposition. I have always had HP printers (though I typically buy higher end printers), and have had quite good luck with them from a performance and reliability standpoint. So far the D2680 seems to be largely living up to the reputation of its predecessors.

The printer is extremely basic, and installation (especially with Windows 7) is a total nonevent. Print quality is decent: I mostly use it for black and white printed drafts. For that it''s fine, and the pages are highly readable in every typeface and font size I have used (PDF files of various sorts also look great). For color photo printing the D2680 is outclassed by many other machines. If that''s your primary use, I think there are better choices available.

Ink use is moderate, and I recommend the larger capacity ink cartridges for optimum cost and convenience. I have had no printing issues with this printer, but I have had one small mechanical issue with it: on one occasion the power button became physically jammed in the "on" position, as it sits in a relatively deep plastic well. I was able to dislodge it with a bit of effort, but that is clearly not the best design concept for a heavily used switch. I considered downgrading my review to three stars because of the switch issue, but since it has been used many times since without reoccurring, I think the D2680 deserves four stars for good all-around performance at a stellar price.

This is the worst printer I have ever owned. The power switch was stuck on when I took it out of the box, and it never got unstuck. It died after only two and half months of fault-filled light duty service, having printed less than 100 pages for me. The best thing I can say about it was that it was free with the purchase of a Windows 7 PC and monitor package. However, I now think the retailer should have paid me for taking it out of their store.

This printer came in a bundled package from best buy. Nothing but problems since installing. The installation software hung up the computer. All of the lights keep blinking suggesting a "problem". Installed most current drivers from the HP site. Problem persisted. The HP support site instructs me to unplug the printer, waits 60 seconds and replug?? Tried this several times and the problem persists. Will try to return this lemon.

Update: returned/exchanged printer. New printer worked fine for the first two print jobs. Then the printer failed to print again. I would advise not to purchase this printer.

Bought several of these for use in classrooms at work. They have always malfunctioned, all their power buttons get stuck. One gave up the ghost after 7 months. Another always reads that it has no paper in the tray when it is full. The third says it has bad cartridges. HP refuses to do anything as their warranty is only for 90 days on these printers. We still have 932c going but brand new printers fail in months! Sad. Bought Canon replacements and haven''t looked back.

For most of my work and personal printers, I use compatible toner and ink cartridges. The quality is often very good, and the price is much lower than the OEM. Lexmark, Epson, and Brother are all quite accomodating, when it comes to using compatibles. However, I haven''t has as much luck with HP, due to their efforts to block compatibles. With Canon, I haven''t had compatibility issues, but unfortunately I just haven''t found the compatible Canon cartridges to be of satisfactory quality. They tend to not yield as much, clog regularly, and the pigments aren''t true resulting in unpredictable output, between cartridges. As such, I stick to the OEM Canon cartridges. Honestly, though, I don''t really mind. Canon inkjet printers often have great quality output, and the consistency of their cartridges are part of that success. With consistent true pigments, in their 211 color cartridges, things we print always look good. The 210 cartridges are similarly good quality, with rich dark black ink.
