Okidata C5200N LED Color Printer

Okidata C5200N LED Color PrinterOne motivation for writing this review is some important misinformation in a previous review. At any rate, I could not decide between the OKI 5200 and the HP 2600. At my local office supply store, they sat side-by-side, and thanks to two different $100 rebate offers (one instant, one mail-in) for the OKI, they were the exact same price. My decades-long favorable experiences with everything HP I had purchased (including a mono laser printer) had me strongly leaning toward the HP. The sample test prints made by each showed them very close in quality, with the HP doing a slightly better job at printing graphics. A big difference is that the OKI''s prints are high gloss. Even the lettering is gloss, when printing no graphics, on plain white paper. So imagine every letter you print with the OKI having glossy black type regardless of what paper you use. If that''s something you like, the OKI will not disappoint. For normal use, I personally find it a bit strange. It so happens that I was buying the OKI primarily for the printing of color brochures, and the glossy output was perfect for that. So I went with the OKI against my better judgement, but in love with the glossy prints.

I really don''t know whether I made the right decision, all things considered, because I don''t have the HP 2600 to compare against. The OKI has an enormous footprint making it difficult to find a place to park it. It also weighs 50+ pounds. The HP has a great and stylistic design that allows a MUCH smaller footprint. Something to keep in mind before you purchase, as it''s a problem for me now. I am going to obtain a separate low cart and place the OKI on that.

The various toner cartidges inside the OKI are horizontally arranged. Lifting the long cover to its full height (requiring a lot of free space to do so), one then reaches over the long bank of toner cartridges to access the rearmost colors. The HP 2600, on the other hand, has an extremely easy access design, with all the cartridges available at the FRONT of the printer, in vertical array.

The OKI does produce oustanding text (with the warning that it is high gloss and there''s nothing you can do about it) that is crisp and clean down to small font sizes. Printing photos is another story. Relative to other color laser printers in this price range, small photos (which I use a lot of for brochure printing) print about average. However, the OKI photo printing would not even match a cheap inkjet printer from five years ago. There are several color printing tweaks available, and I found that using the OKI''s sRGB color space worked a bit better than the other settings. Color lasers have a long way to go when it comes to quality photo printing. They key is to keep the photos small, somewhere under 3" x 3" .

The OKI build construction is good. Preparing for first-time use requires about 25 minutes of removing tapes, straps, and shipping blocks located all over, under and inside the unit. Be certain to keep the cartridges level in your hands whilst you''re removing all the protective tapes from it. I managed to spill some cyan toner on my pants. Driver installation went perfectly, in contrast to some aggravating hacking I''ve had to do when installing HP laser printer drivers.

The OKI fired up properly (if noisily) the very first time, and the intitial test page was perfect. While the print speed is quite good, the warmup time is not. The HP will get you prints from a cold start much quicker -but the printing speed is slow.

Documentation includes a handy and useful booklet that attaches to the side of the printer. The manual itself is lacking in detail. The setup guide was ambiguous and not very helpful.

The built-in Ethernet card is a nice addition, but also found on other color lasers in this price range. Setup for this part is intimidating and not for the faint of heart.

I use 65 pound stock for the brochures I print, which means I have to use the Multi Purpose Tray to load the sheets, and flip open a rear paper stacker so that the stock shoots straight through the printer and out the back. Recall that the printer footprint is already deep, and now I have to allow another foot of room for the sheets to feed out the back. Further, the Multi Purpose Tray is very kludgy to use.

Now for the sobering aspect of OKI ownership (and other color lasers as well). There is bad news, and worse news. Bad -it costs more to purchase a new set of toner cartridges than it cost to purchase a new OKI. The high capacity (5k pages, NOT 50k as mentioned in a previous review) toner cartridges for this printer are $62 for black and $142.50 for the other colors. If you purchase the rainbow pack (all colors at once) you save 10% and pay a mere $440.15. Folks, I paid $400 for this printer brand new after mail-in rebate. Things get worse, as the OKI uses separate drums, one for each color also, and they cost $100 each as well. When you change a drum, OKI recommends you change the cartridge. OKI claims the drums are good for 50k pages. When you thought things couldn''t get worse -well, they do. OKI, unlike HP, is one of those companies that provides only a starter set of toner cartridges (rated at 3k pages). The ugly fact is that once you fork out the dollars for OKI 2600, in only 3k pages you''ll be facing the peculiar decision of forking out $440.15 for new cartridges, or buying a new color laser for LESS. By 50k pages, you''ll be needing some $845 to buy new drums and cartridges. Better start scouting out a convenient dumpster in which to unload your 50-pound hunk of plastic.

The bottom line for me is that the OKI produces some great glossy brochures that just pop with crisp color. Unfortunately, it is not easy to print these brochures due to the kludgy Multi Purpose Tray. For other uses, especially if you''re not seeking the glossy look for everything you print, you may want to check out the competition. I''m personally not looking forward to another major financial outlay at 3k pages, as detailed above.

I purchased this printer after reading a lot of reviews of other printers and this model''s predecesor, the C5150. After rebate, I purchased it from Staples for $400...and they delivered it for free.

I previously owned a Konica-Minolta Magicolor 2400 W Color Laser that I returned. A lesson I learned from that printer is that some color lasers are power hogs. My home office is in an older house (120+ yrs old) with typical home-sized circuitry. The K-M caused the lights to flicker when on. The power consumption on this one is very reasonable.

As previously noted, this printer is big. It is 2 ft deep without the straight path outlet tray open. The top opens like a car hood to access the consumables. While this makes it easy to get to them, you can''t put this printer anywhere you don''t have clearance over it. Measure carefully before you buy. It is also heavy...almost 60 lbs.

Set up was a snap and the instructions were good. Once in place, hookup and installation was easy, as this is not on a network. Just plug in two cords and run the installation software.

The first sample turned out to be defective after about a month. (That can happen to anything.) Oki Customer Support shipped me a refurbished unit overnight and mailed me a lable to ship the defective unit back. Fedex would even come and pick it up.

While getting a refurbished unit was expected, it came with no consumables...toner, drums, fuser and belt. No problem with this printer, tho, because the top opens and everything comes out and back in easily. So swapping everything from one to the other was easy and I was back up and running in no time.

This is where I had a minor problem. The defective printer had less than 300 pages on it. The replacement had a page count of more than 3000. The printer (as most do) judges the life of all consumables based on the page count, so my 99% full toner cartridges were now detected to be only 67% full with a corrosponding decrease in the remaining life of the belt, fuser, and drums. Since this printer will stop working when it thinks it is out of toner, I would have to replace all toners when they still have 1/3 of their life left in them! (The older firmware version of the replacement printer was a minor issue.)

I called Customer Service back with the above concerns. They said there was no way to reset the page count on the printer after servicing, but they agreed to my concerns. They sent me a brand new printer (also overnight) with all new consumables. Fedex came and took the old one away a couple of days later.

The new printer has been running satisfactorily for about 4 months now with no problem. I print mostly on regular 20 lb paper but have done business card stock, Avery lables, check stock, envelopes, and card stock. I have even used lables and envelopes that said "inkjet only not for laser printers" with no problems using both the standard tray and the multipurpose tray. The instructions suggest using the straight thru method for envelopes, card stock, and lables, but all come out fine making the turn thru the normal path.

Contrary to the whining in the previoius post about all the toners running out at once...that is not likely. Depending on your usage, the black will be out first. The others will likely last a lot longer. As far as price, the cost of one black cartridge is far less than the 7 inkjet cartridges (At $30 ea.)I would need for the same 5000 pages on my HP 6540 inkjet.

As an aside, the price of consumables is comparable with other color lasers. If you use the cost of consumables as a basis, the 7 injet cartridges far exceeds the cost of that printer, too. (Not factoring in color ones.)

I do mostly black and white printing and have the defaults set to only use the black cartridge in draft mode. (Still good quality for most uses.) This extends the life of the color toners. The default settings are easy to set using the front panel controls.

The shiny printing takes some getting used to, but I can live with it.

The color pictures (graphics and photographs) I have done have looked good, tho not as good as a good inkjet, but from reading other reviews, neither does any laser.

The only cons are warmup times and noise. Compared to some other lasers I demo-ed in the store this one is a bit noisier especially when warming up, but still bearable. (But then I go back to the old dot matrix printer days, so I guess noise is relative.)

It also takes approx 1 min 55 sec for the first page to come out when the printer is in standby (power saving) mode. Successive print jobs take about 40 seconds for the first page. After that is is fast and quiet.

Overall I am happy with the printer, very satisfied with the customer support, and would recommend this printer. I would give it 4.5 stars if possible, and 5 if it were quieter.

As an IT Manager, I had heard good things about OKI color printers and purchased my first one almost two years ago -it now has almost 30,000 copies on it and (other than consumables) has required no service attention.

Pluses: Color and image quality ROCKS! Comes with network card already installed. Rarely jams, and easy to clear jams if the occur. Easily replacable and widely available toner and drums (and, if you check out a well-known online auction site, aftermarket drum reset kits are available which will save you about $300 when the printer hits 15,000 copies).

Only one negative: Network install/use can be a bit quirky (print jobs sometimes jam in printer que for no reason, but the network admin. can easily reset without rebooting).

Bottom line: I''m now using only OKI 5150/5200n''s (8 total) in our three store locations. For a mid-priced color laser, the 5200n deserves a serious look.

I''ve had the Oki C5200 for almost 5 years... it has been an excellent printer. I was lured into using a cheaper toner that claimed to be 100% compatible with the OEM product. WRONG. 6 months later and my wonderful laser printer is in need of over $800 worth of repair work. It has become very noisy, the black won''t print without smearing, all other colors are skewed, and there are blotches of cyan, magenta, and yellow all over the page!

Oki makes an excellent product... just make sure you use the OEM toner.

I just ordered an Oki MC360 MFP from Amazon today for a little over $300 to replace my failing C5200. :(

The printer has a lot of good features, and works well for about 6 months. Then users are faced with a dual nightmare. The high cost of toner and drums has already been mentioned above in several reviews. Complicate your life with the fact that maintenance problems start to accumulate and make the investment in toner and drum replacements more and more doubtful with every day of use. My printer has had 3 separate visits to the depot repair, and since the printer weighs in at over 50 lbs, that''s no easy task. It has also had at least 6 calls to Tech Support. Still the problem keeps coming back. Now I will buy a product with built in duplexing, and set the OKI in the rear, as a back up only.

Inkpress White Gloss Film 220gsm/7mil 13x19 20 SheetsInkpress White Gloss Film produces the very best & most brilliant colors of any paper I have used. I specialize in Hot Air Balloons, Classic Cars, and Fireworks so bright color rendition is critical to me. In addition, I make my own prints on my Canon Pixma Pro 9000 MII and the blacks are deep and colors pop with no sign of ink laying on top of the paper like every other paper I have tried. My prints are clean, sharp and smooth. They look like cibachrome prints and my customers love them! I''ve been using White Gloss Film for years and intend to continue.

This is an excellent product and does help with many functions of my business. I can label things with specific names of fragrances and stuff like "Cotton Candy". They are also great for small items like lip balm because they fit the smaller containers. The only downfall of the brother labels is that they are not heat resistant. The way I have gotten around this is by either spraying them with matte or glossy fixative or by putting clear plastic tape over them. It would seem after a couple of months the heat and humidity makes the label fade. Overall I absolutely love the whole thermal printer though and these are perfect 1" dots to use for any labeling needs. If you live in a cooler more temperate state it may not be a problem.

I ordered this product (a set of four printer cartridges for my Epson printer.) I inserted them hoping that it would work. Alas, it did not as there were streaks in my color pictures and my B&W letters. I had assumed that these rebuilt cartridges would not work. The original cartridges would cost me about $60-70 dollars depending on the source. There is a huge difference between $70 and $14 (shipping included for these cartridges) I contacted the seller and it took a few hours for them to respond to my email (no telephone contact.) They advised me to insert all the cartridges at one time (pushing them in at the same time.) That did the trick. Now they print pretty well. The colors are not as crisp, but the B&W prints are just fine. I can also live with slightly lower quality color for my prints. Thus, I am reasonably content with my purchase.

Great price / great servive. Came fast.I was spending 53.00 for ink at best buy and staples.I am saving a lot of money by buying through amazon

So far, it prints just as well as the name brand. You do have to "allow" your printer to use the product that is not the genuine name brand, but I was able to do it through a series of automatic command prompts. Would definitely buy again and recommend.

My trusty Brother HL-1440 laser printer was giving me a low toner message so I covered the sensor holes and tricked it into printing more pages while I fully intended to order new toner. By the time I got around to it the Drum message was blinking as well. Figuring I had probably printed more than 20,000 pages, it was time for a new drum. I initially replaced the toner only, but the page quality was still suffering from the old drum. I installed the new drum and the pages came out clean again.

Before I ordered the replacement drum, I was faced with the decision to buy a new printer with a new drum or just buy a replacement drum. The OEM drum was more than a new printer, so why not get the new printer? Because this compatible drum plus new toner was less than half the price. Also most of the new printers only have a 10,000 page drum and a starter (700 page) toner. For example, a new HL-2170W will only accept the TN330 (1500 pages) or TN360 (2600 pages) while this DR-400 compatible drum will last for 20,000 pages and my old printer will accept the TN460 toner (6,000 pages). In the long run it was much cheaper to replace the drum and toner and continue to use my higher capacity printer.

BTW, the drum arrived quickly, packaged within an air filled sleeve, and worked perfectly.

Did not dare to use it as it created a popping and clicking sound in my printer. Purchased a toner cartridge and drum as i was not sure which one was the culprit for my gray background and poor printing. Ended up using the new toner but re-installed my old drum as I was afraid this drum would cause further damage due to the abnormal sound when it was running.

I bought this at "Wally World" for $29 last night as an emergeny solution to a problem. Had to get the meeting minutes printed and mistakenly thought that documents written on my laptop using MS Works would be easily transferrable to my desktop''s Word. Wrong. Those b*s*t*r*ds. So out I ran at 10:30pm to Wally''s expecting to pay at least $50 for something basic. Wrong again. For $29 I almost expected it to implode after the 80 pages I needed it to print. I even bought an extra cartridge assuming the one included would just barely make it through the test page. It actually comes with full regular cartridges which was a pleasant surprise. I then expected it to at least be noisy it wasn''t at all. Lastly, I expected slow. My plan was to send the files to the printer and then go to bed so it''d all be done by morning. Truthfully, my plan wouldn''t have worked anyway since the input tray only holds 50 sheets (not a deal breaker at all) but it was spitting out the pages so quickly that I stood there in utter amazement. I should explain that it has been at least 10 years since I last owned an inkjet printer. Something must''ve happened to print speeds in the interim because I couldn''t staple them as fast as they were shooting out! Delightful. And as far as the numerous complaints about the lack of USB cable? Puhlease. I have a shoebox full of them for some reason and would have been just as annoyed if I had had to pay for yet another one. (Why do I have so many? Maybe I have all of theirs?) As a bonus, it''s small enough that I''m going to start bringing it with me to the meetings so I can just print off requested documents instead of trying to remember what everyone needs and e-mailing it to them later (yeah right). How well will it deal with being lugged around? At $29 if it lasts 6 months I''ll be happy. BTW, it comes with a weird tote bag as if they intend for you to lug it around. Hmmm....

Update As of 8/6/11 the printer is still going strong. Still receives only light use (around 80 pages/month) but works the same as the day I bought it. No regrets. If it breaks anytime soon I''ll be replacing it with the same model. Everything else I''ve seen is too bulky to be carried around.

I like equipment that is inexpensive, reliable, and simple to operate. This printer meets all three requirements. Despite my technophobia I had no trouble installing it, and it has never once misfired during the weeks I have been using it. For anyone who, like me, prefers a printer with no bells and whistles this one is perfect. And besides all that, it''s small enough to fit on a shelf that''s just 12 inches from back to front.

This little printer is a cinch to set up and the quality of the graphics it produces is excellent. You cannot control the color nuances as is possible in more expensive models, but it doesn''t matter. I am an artist and very persnickety and I am very happy with this model. It even comes with a black tote bag saying "HP Ecosolutions" on it. The printer also comes with a double supply of ink for both color and black: 61/61 XL. What more could you ask for?

P.S. Virtually no printers come with a USB connection cord. Hopefully you''ll have one from a previous printer. They retail for $20.00 at Wal-mart.

P.P.S.Several people have complained that the printer often says it''s out of paper when it isn''t. The directions tell you how to remedy this situation. Poke the paper down as far as it will go, then press the start button ONCE. Works like a charm!

P.P.P.S.My printer is now just over one year old and it works as well as the day I bought it!

My old Lexmark $40 printer recently died after about 1-1/2 years. I mainly use a laser printer, and figured the squirtjet cartridges wouldn''t last. But they did.

So, off I went to get a new printer. I went through 4 of them. 2 were DOA,

one skewed the paper so that it jammed, another worked for about 1 day and died. Most of these were all-in-one printers.

So I decided to try a really cheap printer, and the HP 1000 filled the bill. It worked the first time I tried it, and I still find it working after 2 days.

A pox on printer manufacturers, save HP (and I even found one of them that didn''t work in my adventures).

It''s a decent printer. It doesn''t use 6 cartridges, I never do photos, and so on. Now if they could just get the ink prices down!

Moab Entrada Rag Fine Art, 2-Side Natural Matte Inkjet Paper

Moab Entrada Rag Fine Art, 2-Side Natural Matte Inkjet Paper, 22.5 mil., 300gsm, 8.5x11'', 25 Sheets.I used this paper to print an architectural portfolio using a Canon 9900. Line drawings, graphics, and photos render beautifully on this paper. B&W photography look especially good. It lacks the cold blue tint of many 300gsm matts, and it has a natural luminescence that make prints pop out. My only complaint is its coarseness to the touch.

Simply put Moab paper is not manufactured consistently. The quality can vary wildly and the people that run the company won''t own up to that fact. If you get a good batch of paper the quality is excellent for the price point. However, I have printed on quite a bit of Kayenta and Entrada that exhibits many and varied surface defects. Coating that flakes off; faint surface abrasion that isn''t noticeable until you print an image with a lot of ink density (read skid marks in the shadows) and loads of dust in some rolls that can make a general mess of your printer and your prints (invariably the dust blocks ink making it to the surface of the paper and when if finally moves you are left with a white spot). Hahnemühle paper is more expensive but by the time you get done pitching all the screwed up prints you end up with when using Moab products I''d say the cost is the same (especially if you count your time and frustration). Having worked in a darkroom for years I expect my inkjet paper to be as reliable as my photo paper. Not so with Moab. For a budget proofing paper try the Illuminata available through Inkjet Art and the papers available through Red River. Both brands are head and shoulders above Moab with regard to quality control.

This is my paper of choice when printing matte. I have used it for several years and not experienced the "dust" problem reported by others. Of course, I always lightly brush it off before use. This is a top quality paper which I strongly recommend.

I use this paper (also the 13 x 19 size) with a Canon pro9000mk2 to reproduce paintings. It works beautifully for my purposes, and the color profile provided by Moab on their web site is spot on for me. The paper is heavy, ever so lightly textured, and completely matte. So far all Moab papers I''ve tried have been great. Only problem is that I have found a few flaws on some sheets, light vertical lines in the texture of the paper, and occasionally a small dark spot. If not for that, I''d give 5 stars! If you are new to using a cotton rag fine art paper, I recommend getting a drafting brush such as http://www.amazon.com/Alvin-2341-Dusting-Brush-14-5/dp/B000HF6K9S/ and lightly dusting each sheet before printing to get rid of any stray cotton fibers that could create a white spot on the print.

We are printing fun family pics for gifts to our family. The ones our kids sent us had good color. The ones we printed on this media were not as bright, BUT it could be the printer and not the media. They stay nicely on the refrigerator and seem to be high quality.

We were looking for some ideas on how to print our "save the date" at home. These worked pretty well and will likely be sending a bunch of these out in a few months.

These magnets are so easy to use. For any that might worry that the magnets would be too thick to feed their printer, I had no problem feeding them through my Canon iX6520. They print just as well as any other glossy photo paper. They''re a great idea for refrigerator magnets. My nephews and nieces love printing their pictures and putting them on the refrigerator.

This magnetic photo paper is very good quality, prints looked beautiful. I wouldn''t try to hold anything more than a single piece of paper with the magnet though, it''s fairly weak as a magnet.

Kodak i1320 Scanner (1419787)

Kodak i1320 Scanner

  • Grayscale_Depth - 8-bit
  • Interpolated_Resolution - 1200 x 1200 dpi
  • Usb - Yes
  • Maximum_Color_Scan_Speed_ppm - 30

This scanner is great! Highly recommended. Fills whole between under $1000 scanners and the expensive workgroup scanners. Easy setup. You almost have to catch the paper, it works so fast. Only downside is the plastic rank for catching the outgoing paper could be better. A minor thing.

Likes: The colors and type print perfectly. Setup instructions were well written but could have included more setup and function tests like wifi setup and scanner testing. The regular black ink cartridge is a double wide. The printer is fairly compact and I found it to be currently discounted at one but not both of our local big box office supply stores. Maybe it''s a Black Friday deal.

Concerns: I would be a little concerned in using card or label stock in this printer as the heavy paper has to do a 180 in order to print.

Just follow the "Start Here" brochure EXACTLY and the setup should go perfectly. It takes a little time to complete the setup so be very patient. I used my old HP power cord and USB cable. During the setup procedure you can make a test print. My test print came out perfectly. I then made a copy of the test print on the scanner and it made a perfect color match. After that was completed I set up my WiFi connection using the printer panel. Then I sent a photo from my iPhone 5 to the XP-600 which resulted in an ugly print on one of the two 4x6 sample sheets that came with the printer. Now what? Based on a guess I turned the remaining photo paper over with the good side down and did another iPhone to XP-600 print. This time the printer made a perfect photo print. You can also make perfect and fast 4x6 photo copies on photo paper of 4x6 original photos.

If you forget to pull the printed paper catcher tray out when you print the printer will stop and complain. When loading the regular paper tray please pay attention to the white triangle alignment mark on the front of the paper tray.

Summary: This is a whole lot of printer for not that much money and the price has been dropping lately. The software doesn''t talk at you like Lexmark but I don''t expect it to spill black inkjet ink all over my carpet like my late not so great HP printer. The big difference between the XP-400 and the XP-600 is the XP-600 is a faster printer with more resolution and has a bigger black ink cartridge. It also has an extra black cartridge for photos.

I write this only having used the printer for 2 days, but it''s so different from the other printers I''ve purchased, I''m compelled to share my experience. Connected set-up was a cinch. Haven''t set up wi-fi yet but it would appear to be fairly straight-forward. First I need to share that I''m partial to Epson after having used HP, Lexmark, and Canon printers; largely because of Epson ink, which I still think has no equal. Then 3 years ago, my slow but wonderful Epson Stylus 3 in 1 stopping working (though after replacing it I discovered I just had a bad cable; it still works very well, but is very large and unwieldy). It''s replacement was a lightweight Stylus 4 in 1 with extremely inconsistent performance. Because I print a great deal of text in my work, out of frustration last year, I bought an Epson Workforce-60 with the idea that if I just had a good solid printer designed only for printing that was fast, reliable and with quality output, I could still use the 4 in 1 for scanning and copying. What a joke. Seriously, the Workforce-60 has never printed a decent page, can be picked up with one hand and is cheap from one end to the other, like a toy. So again I started my search for the perfect ink jet printer, looking at reviews for about 6 months, but reluctant to buy more of the same!! However, last week, after the toy prevented me from a deadline, enough was enough. Amazingly, after all the reviews and comments, I again settled on Epson this Expression XP-600 which normally listed for $149. Again Amazon''s price rocked and was too good to pass up. I bit the bullet and went for it, though already owning 3 working printers, none of which I could recommend, I allowed myself no preconceived hope.

When the delivery man said he would bring it up to the house for me as it was heavy, I thought he was implying I had no strength (I''m an older woman but not weak). But when he handed it over, the weight really surprised me. I thought, hmm, could this actually be a solid printer even with the small footprint? Yes, it absolutely is. After setting it up, I found it takes up less space than any of my other printers, though it copies and scans, has two paper trays and a CD-Rom tray. Yes, the ink for it is more expensive. But it''s the first printer I''ve had that has a special photo ink cartridge that fits alongside the other individual cartridges. Also, it uses a large capacity black ink cartridge only, which is great for me. So I decide my first printed document would be a complex multi-color containing a lot of tiny drawings within and extra small fonts. I absolutely couldn''t believe the output utterly fantastic, the crispest print I''ve ever had. I have to say Epson must have really been listening to unsatisfied customers when they designed this solid, compact, user-friendly, modestly priced peripheral. I particularly enjoyed recycling all 3 of my other printers yesterday.

It''s not fair to offer a review of a product I have had for only two days since a reader''s biggest concern, reliability, cannot be determined yet. I was having more frequent lockups with my Kodak ESP-7 all-in-one so time for a new printer. Here are my brief observations:

1. Using test photos, I was initially disappointed with fleshtones and other colors using gloss photo paper. I tried the variables and different profiles with no improvement. Ultimately, the problem was solved by setting the printer to any of the matte paper settings (presumably provides more ink to the paper). As bad as my original photos were, that''s how good they became. In fact, using the printer''s own settings (No outside profiles in Adobe Lightroom) the match to the iMac screen was closer than I could ever get with the Kodak.

2. I saw no adverse effects by using the matte setting for gloss paper as the page dried just as fast with the gloss setting. Just deeper and more accurate colors, something I wanted to share with any reader as it might help solve a problem.

3. I was hesitant to switch from pigment based inks (Kodak) to dye based (Epson). My reward though, with direct side to side comparisons, showed the dye based Claria photos to yield an enormous improvement in saturation, contrast and depth of color in general. Stunning!

4. I thought the Claria colors were great on my 5 star Kodak premium 4x6 paper but then I compared the same photos to those that were subsequently printed on the two sheets of the Epson highest grade paper that were included as samples with the printer. Mind blowing, and a new appreciation for dye inks. The photos will probably not be able to compete with pigment inks in direct sunlight over time (who does that anyhow?) but the gains far outweigh the losses. The photos are amazingly beautiful and I ordered two boxes of the Epson paper and will never look back.

Why the gloss setting didn''t quite offer the ink saturation required for accurate photos I may never know. I will try it again just for fun when the Epson paper arrives. Maybe it offers less holdout. Also, after printing up a storm with all of my testing, I have a surprisingly large amount of ink left (with the standard capacitiy cartridges). I''m looking forward to other reviewers'' comments to compare printer settings. BTW, the printer does print from my iPad and iPhone. Really neat technology.

I really do love this printer; I initially gave it 4 stars because it lacked a document feeder and has a nagging output tray habit. However, I have upgraded it to 5 stars simply because the photo printing on this printer has so far outperformed any other printer I''ve tried in side-by-side comparison, including a commercial processor. This new type of ink is really something! Okay, here''s the whole scoop:

EASY SETUP: Setup was super simple, as it has been with each of the Epson printers I have. Again, I chose not to even unfold the directions that came with the machine. Instead, I removed all the tape and packaging and plugged the machine in, trusting it to tell me what to do next for setup -and it did. (Kudos to Epson on packaging, by the way -one big bag, two styro pieces and a lot of blue tape, plus some protective film... not a landfill full of "packaging," for once!)

Again, I chose NOT to connect a computer to the printer for wireless network setup, simply because it doesn''t come with a USB cable and I was too lazy to go look for one. This means you need to "type in" your wireless network key on the printer display, using a multi-page alphabet/number/symbols set and directional keys to highlight each character of your key, then press OK, then go on to the next. Maybe I should have gone for the USB cable, but it lets you see what you are typing so you can fix mistakes. The printer initialized on our network without problem. I downloaded the drivers to the CD-less devices and used the installation CD for those with CD drives and setup on the computers couldn''t have been easier: Toshiba Netbook on Windows 7, an HP laptop on Windows 8, and a Dell desktop running Windows XP. The printer is AirPrint enabled, I see, but I haven''t gotten there, yet.

AMAZING PHOTO PRINTING: The printer comes with a few pieces of 4x6 Epson Premium Photo Paper but I was so impressed with the photo printing quality that I went out and bought more. These prints look better than the ones from our local photo printing shop! Really -did I mention the photo printing was amazing??? I was afraid that the ink supply after printing 3 photos, one which was very dark, would show noticeable attrition, but they are holding up well so far. And the photo print quality is AMAZING!

PRINTABLE CD/DVD: In a neat solution, this printer comes with a little tray that you can insert into the output tray and use to print directly on printable DVDs and CDs. I love this type of "labeling" and only regret that it can be hard to find the writeable media, especially at a decent price. However, I had some white DVDs and so ran one through. It is a little complicated to load the DVD -you have to remove a flat "tray" from where it is stored, tell the printer what you''re going to do and let it set itself up, THEN insert the flat tray into the printer and line it up correctly, but, thankfully, the display talked me through the whole process and the results were very nice. DO be sure to use the DVD/CD software that comes with the printer to design your label -it aligns everything to allow printing on jewelbox inserts and sleeves as well as printable media.

DUPLEXED DOCUMENT PRINTING: I expect a printer to be able to print, and this one does a fine job with crisp black and good color on regular white typing paper. Best part, as far as I''m concerned, is the duplexer, though. It''s a little noisy but why did we ever print things only one-sided for so many years? I''m afraid I''m not the person to ask about speed -the printer speed seems quite adequate to me. It takes longer to print photos than draft-quality text, as you might expect.

TWO PAPER TRAYS: There are two paper trays, one for "regular" paper and one for specially-sized items like envelopes and photo paper. The special tray has good guides etched into it so you know where to set the "sides" for each type of media. It also has a nice picture to remind you that printable side goes in face down! All trays are just a bit flimsy; they appear to be resilient but it is possible to, for example, get the edge of the top tray "latched" under the paper guide of the bottom tray if you are pulling a bit too hard.

BRIGHT "TOUCH-CONTROL" DISPLAY: The display is adjustable, from flat against the side of the printer to parallel to the top. The display is touch sensitive, very bright and easy to see and easy to navigate.

COPIER COPIES AND SCANNER... SCANS: The scanner table is practically the same size as the footprint of the machine and the scanning guides show max scan/copy size as 8.75" x 12"... however, you can only print up to 8.5" x 14". The scanner does a nice job of scanning various types of text, but there is no optical character recognition built into the Epson Scan software to make the scanned documents editable. The maximum scanning resolution is 9600 x 9600 dpi, but there is some depth of color loss during scanning even at the highest resolution. I scanned the pictures I printed and whether I displayed the scanned images on the computer or re-printed them, there was just less vivid color in the reproduction.

PUTS ITSELF AWAY: It can take this printer a little while to "wake up" if you haven''t printed to it for a bit. Then, if you pause in printing for several minutes, you will hear it go through a series of internal maneuvers before quieting. I''m not sure exactly what is going on, but I choose to believe that the printer is setting the ink cartridges up to be less likely to evaporate/dry out/leak, thus conserving ink over the longer term. If so, I think that''s great news. If not, please don''t disabuse me of this notion!

LITTLE QUIBBLES: I have gotten used to having document feed trays for scanning and copying and am sorry this printer doesn''t have one simply because it is such a TOP NOTCH little printer that I would probably move it into a spot of prominence around here, rather than relegate it to its original destination in the "hobby office" in the barn. The other argument I''m having with it is over the paper output tray. In both our other Epson printers, if you want to leave the output tray folded up and have your output fall onto the floor so you can roll over it with your chair, your printer will let you do so. This one won''t... it detects whether the output tray is extended and won''t print until it is, even though it is unable to extend it, itself. It''s a little annoying, although I can see their point... I do regularly wheel over prints that have fallen to the floor while trying to get to them, and that would be a CRIME with these gorgeous photo prints!

NEXT DAY UPDATE: I printed a few "challenging" 4x6 prints on my Epson WF-2540. There was no comparison to the XP-600; particularly with regard to the black, the depth of color from the XP-600 was simply magnificent! I then sent the same prints through Kodak grocery-store processing... again, the XP-600 print is SO much glossier and more crisp. I am going to keep this machine in the main office, document feeder notwithstanding!

I don''t often right these, but we''ve had such bad luck with our printers, I thought this might help. We''d gone through three HP printers, all from Costco, in the past two years. The reliability just wasn''t there, and then when we bought Costco''s replacement ink-cartridges for the HP, apparently we voided the warranty for the HP printer? I was like, "what? are u kidding me?" Why would Costco sell me ink cartidges that would void the warranty of the printer?? Crazy, I tell ya.

Anyway, I had two friends suggest the Epson "small in one" printers, so I gave the HP back to Costco (thank you very little), and paid cash for the Epson.

Gotta say: Nice minimal packaging, Nice looking printer, Nice small footprint, AND very nice print quality (wow)!! It''s kinda hard to believe that the Epson was about the same price as the HP, cuz the print was much finer.

Anyway, I''m really happy with the Epson purchase, and highly encourage you to give them a try.

I have not used any other brochure paper, so I can''t compare this to other brands. It comes with 100 sheets plus 100 printable adhesive seals. The paper was definitely heavy enough for me. I even compared it to other brochures I had from misc companies and it felt just as thick, if not more so. It is clearly scored with an obvious front and back for foolproof folding. It comes with a formatting and printing tips sheet that includes ways to receive microsoft templates by mail and download, both blank and pre-designed. The Avery site provides a few pre-designed templates, but most helpful is the Designpro software that takes you step-by-step through the process of designing your own template (with free-clipart pictures, backgrounds and borders). It printed perfectly in my printer (although I only do one sheet at a time). The colors were sharp, the pictures were crisp all in all, the brochures came out better than I expected. For the price, this was perfect. They look great and were simple to create. I will definitely buy these again in the future.

Canon S300 Color Bubble Jet Printer

Canon S300 Color Bubble Jet Printer
  • High-quality color printing on many types of paper
  • Up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi color resolution, 600 x 600 dpi black
  • Up to 11 ppm black, 7.5 ppm color
  • Convenient USB interface; PC and Mac compatible
  • PhotoRecord software for edge-to-edge 4-by-6-inch photos

I can''t praise this printer enough. I haven''t owned an inkjet printer, so maybe I''m easily impressed. But from the moment I brought it home, this printer has exceeded my expectations.

The S300 is quite small, so it fit easily into my (somewhat cramped) office. It was very easy to hook up to my computer and install the drivers on Windows. The written instructions were clear, and the driver installation program guided me through the head calibration task in no time.

After that, everything just worked. I printed out a few color images and web pages just for fun, and have since used it quite often to print out verious tax-related documents and letters. The print quality is impressive, even on plain paper. The printing speed is fine for most documents. And the little extras like automatic power on/off make the printer a joy to use.

I expected to have to pay twice what I did to get a printer I was happy with. At around $100, this printer is astoundingly good.

A word of warning: the ink cartridges for this printer are quite small, so if you''re looking for a home office printer, you should probably get something more industrial-stength. However, if you only need to print a few pages every now and then, but still want reasonable print quality, then the S300 is ideal for you.

setup was easy. print beautiful, quick. price great. after having lexmark printers, i shopped with regard to replacement ink prices. canon replacement ink prices seemed reasonable. after purchase, i saw the ink tanks were tiny (9ml black, 5mlx3 color). my old lexmark tanks don''t indicate volume, but they look to be 3 times larger than the canon. with the lexmark, i was getting 6 months(about 1000 pages) of printing. with the canon, i used up the black ink after only about 100 pages (half of them cd covers) in 16 days. print quality was set at "standard"and did not "clean heads" or do other ink-wasting activities. i got far less than the 300 pages the manual says you''ll get, esp. when you consider the number of pages that were plain cd covers. i used the tank until it faileddid not replace when the warning came up (worked for about 20 pages). i haven''t done much color printing yet, only a few photos and mixed documents. i''m sure the color won''t last long, either (manual says 170 pages). i recommend the printer, but be sure to have replacement ink tanks on hand.

The Canon S300 outperforms most printers costing twice the price. I checked out numerous models from various manufacturers and I bought the lowest priced printer of all, the S300. Text and graphic output is stunning. Plus, this printer is unbelievabley FAST! The S300 even out performs higher end models from Canon! I don''t know how Canon can sell a printer of this quality for under a $(...). Some say the S300 looks ugly and boxy but I LIKE its styling.

(12/27/01) A month later and this printer STILL rocks for the price. I found that the printer requires some tweaking. There are numerous color, brightness, contrast and other controls in the printer driver software. Configuring these settings AND using glossy photo paper will yield some jaw-dropping results. Text is speedy and crisp. I would buy this printer again in a heartbeat!

Great quailty print jobs. It is a vast improvement over my old Canon 4300. For an (inexpensive) printer, the speed and quality are excellent.

I print about 400 copies a month most financial analyses and some WEB articles. I just bought an HP 1115 Photosmart Printer. After an initial week of massive paper jams I returned the printer --based on advice from the HP support group and bought this printer instead. You take it out of the box load the software and GO. It really pushes out black and white fast and the color is just fine. THIS is a fine printer and a real bargain.

HP ScanJet 8290 Duplex Document Scanner

HP ScanJet 8290 Duplex Document Scanner

  • 4,800 x 4,800 dpi optical resolution, 48-bit color
  • 50-sheet automatic document feeder
  • PC and Mac compatible
  • Hi-Speed USB and SCSI connectivity

Don''t believe HP''s claim that the 8290 is "network ready". I was disappointed to learn, after I purchased mine, that the scanner cannot be accessed over our network, because our operating system is not NT4. If you use Win98, Win2000, or WinXP, forget the network feature.

Other than that bit of false advertising, I have no complaints. The hardware and software work smoothly and efficiently, and the 25 pages per minute claim is achievable, but only when scanning to a file, which is the best procedure anyway.

Buy HP ScanJet 8290 Duplex Document Scanner Now

I recently purchased my HP scanner from an online discount house. Unfortunately, the scanner arrived without software or a printed User Manual. However, rather than get upset, I decided to assemble the scanner (which took 1 minute). I then went to the HP website and immediately found and downloaded the software & device drivers. After installation, I attahed the USB cable, plugged in the power cord and, after a few seconds I was scanning documents at blazing speed. I was even more impressed because I am using a rather outdated PC running Windows XP with 512M RAM. Yet the scanner runs flawlessly, and the document feeder NEVER jams which a very important consideration. I am thrilled with this HP product. The software could be a bit more user friendly, so I will only give it 4 stars.

I don''t usually write product reviews, but I was very confused when researching scanners on the internet. Concerning scanners, there are a lot of conflicting user reviews and I wanted to report my experience with this particular product to balance out the negative reports from others.

When it works, it''s pretty good...but the ADF jams a LOT, and it accidentally grabs two pages instead of one a LOT. Finally, the scans are a little washed out/overexposed. I must believe there is a better product out there, even if it''s $2000...

Want HP ScanJet 8290 Duplex Document Scanner Discount?

Have been using scanner for office for about a year, automatic paper feeder jams quite often, and most annoyingly tends to pull the paper into the feeder mechanism when it jams, even if paper had already passed through, apparently attempting duplex scan. Duplex scanning itself cannot be set from computer but rather have to push button on scanner. Other than jamming and pulling multiple pages at once, has worked reasonably well. We are scanning papers that had been given to clients to fill out and are not pristine condition.

I was using an HP ScanJet 8250 at work and decided to buy one for use at home. I looked around and found a good deal on an HP ScanJet 8290 and wound up buying it. I had looked for a sheetfed scanner with a duplexer before and could not afford one. After using the 8250 at work and liking it, I decided to give this one a try.

I bought it and had no problems installing it on a new laptop loaded with Windows Vista after downloading the appropriate drivers from the HP website. Once I installed the software and connected the scanner I was in for a surprise. The 8250 is rated at 15 ppm and this one is rated at 25 ppm. The 8290 not only scans much faster but, the three hole punched papers that choked the 8250 fed through the 8290 without a hitch. I''ve had this scanner for a few weeks now and have only had it jam less than half a dozen times and I scan old publications that have been hole punched multiple times, stapled and or dog eared and this scanner feds them without a problem.

All in all, I''m completely satisfied with this scanner and would recommend it for general office use.

I am an apparel design student and I wanted to have pattern making paper at home that was comparable to what we use at school. This is actually MUCH nicer. It is a brilliant white and has a smooth surface. The school has a rougher version that makes erasing a pain. You do not get small rough places on this pattern paper after erasing. It is opaque enough that using a red sharpie for the grain line does not penetrate the paper. The 24" width is ample for men''s and women''s garment patterns. I bought this to fit on a 24" wall mounted METAL dispenser. It fits great and tears smoothly and evenly. This came in a package of 2 rolls of 150 feet. My only complaint is that I wish it came in ONE ROLL of 300 feet. This would fit nicely on the dispenser, and would eliminate the need to store the other roll until you need to use it. Other than that, it is perfect for apparel designers and pattern makers.

NOTE: The center hole is large enough to fit the metal kraft paper dispensers. I had to order several other kinds and return them before I found this one! MOST other rolls had center holes that were tiny. Some roll papers said "drawing" paper and were really TRACING paper. This is truly paper, not tracing parchment.

I cut a full-width slot in the top of the box, then re-inserted the roll of paper, fed the end through the slot, taped the box closed again, and placed it behind my work table. Now I can pull the paper up and over the table (anchor it with masking tape) to serve as a clean surface for my next project. Much better than what I''ve been doing for years (taping old calendar pages together).

  • Lower Profile of FINE Cartridge
  • New inks improve coloring, gamut and color fastness
  • Easy replacement

I say relatively because ink cartridges are always overpriced. Having said that, this is the cheapest way to get ink for your Canon printer. First, the XL cartriges are the cheapest per mL of ink. Second, it''s actually slightly cheaper to buy them both in this bundle, and the paper is essentially thrown in for free. So, unless you only need one cartridge or the other, this is a no-brainer.

These ink replacements for the Canno printer were better priced at Amazon then in any of the stores I shopped so with free shipping, I bought them. I also like the extra free photo sheets included in this package. I still think all ink for all printers should be way cheaper........

The price of ink is, in my opinion, outrageous. But the real deal is the size of the cartridge. More ink is just better. This package comes with paper too. Nice deal. I''ve ordered this twice. I''ll do it again.

I got the Canon PG-210 XL CL-211 XL Combo pack for $44. I still had black ink in the printer (about half)so, I installed the color (CL-211) cartridge. Everthing worked fine and the color showed that it was full. I printed 13 photos and I checked the status, it showed almost full. I then printed 12 more photos. The 12th photo did''t come out, I am out of color ink. I got at least 10 times as much printing with the original regular sized cartridge. I bought factory cartridges so the above wouldn''t happen. I guess they get old and dry out. I had the same problem with another printer. I didn''t call customer support, I don''t want to argue. I guess I will have to buy a new printer when I run out of ink!!
