I wanted to get a MFP that I could share amongst 2 iMacs, 1 Macbook Pro, 1 Mac mini, and 3 Windows laptops (7 and XP Pro). I also wanted to use Airprint when it comes out (for printing from iPhones and iPads) which would likely require direct attachment to a server via USB vs. networking over wireless or ethernet. I was tired of spending 2-3 times the cost of the printer itself on ink a year so decided I was going to go laser this time around. For all these reasons I initially started with a product that had a much better rating than the X204N, the Canon MF4350D. I won''t go into the details here but suffice to say that while I found the Canon easy to install and use on a single computer getting it to share the scanner over our home network was a nightmare. After struggling in angst over the poor reviews the Lexmark X204N has here on Amazon I decided to give one a try for myself and am I glad I did.
Not much to say here other than it installed easily, works perfectly over the network to all my computers (so far...fingers crossed), and was very reasonably priced. In addition I feel the build and print quality are superior to the Canon and the noise level is less. About the only thing it does not have that the Canon does is duplex printing. Yes it costs a bit more but the networking capabilities including wireless and ethernet make up for it.
I''m really happy with my Lexmark X204N so far and I have to think these other reviews may be related to how new the product is.

I had to discard the X204n after about eight months. The feeder is flimsy; it misses pages, and sometimes the pages get stuck in it,
The printer makes good prints, but light-colored fonts are a problem even when you set the printer to "dark"
The software is unusually slow, and not user friendly.
It is so bad that I felt it is unfair to sell it to anyone, even though it is relatively new.

The Lexmark X204N prints right around the manufactures published specs. Both plain text and pdf print and copy at about 20-24ppm.I know this since I actually timed it. I tested with graphics print and it was still in the 20-24ppm. So, if you are not printing this fast you need to check your drivers on Lexmark''s website, and upload the latest updates. When I first used the scanner I was having problems using the scanning software with Presto Page Manager. It ran slow. Instead, after talking to support, I opted for the other software that comes with the printer called the Lexmark Scan Center.
I orinally reviewed this printer with 5 stars. But, do to countless printing issues, I must downgrade its quality. It seems like nearly any kind of
required Windows update, or software update from an unrelated program pends the printing function of this printer. Then, in order to print the pages stuck in the pending file you must reboot your computer. Hopefully you are not in the middle of something important, or have 5 other programs open that take time and passwords to restart again.
All in all, I decided that this printer just puts me into a bad mood. I never know when it will print. I had an old HP Laser jet for over 10 years, and
it printed 100 pct of the time. I have owned the Lexmark x204n for only 5 months and it has had about a dozen printing malfunctions. Despite 3 phone calls to tech support, and several updates the problem was unresolved. I guess I should have heeded the advice of my local computer guy and old friend and never bought a Lexmark. They still have all the problems they have been known to have with past printers. This review is for the Lexmark x204n multi-function printer. It''s got laser printing, scanning, and faxing capabilities for a decent price. What intrigued me the most was the advertised "scan to PDF and email" feature. It''s a very convenient feature that most printers in the low-end price range lack.
I was so surprised to find the scan and email feature that I had to investigate to be sure. If you read the User''s Guide, indeed it says you can scan and email. What it completely fails to mention -and this is very important! -is it requires an external SMTP server. What''s worse, the printer does not support an SSL or TLS connection to the external SMTP server. Lots of technical jargon there, but in short what it means is scan and email most likely won''t work for you.
Under what circumstances will the scan and email feature work? It will work if you''ve got an SMTP server that allows either no authentication or plain text authentication. (Basically none. Your ISP probably gives you access to an SMTP server, but again your ISP will require either SSL or TLS which the printer does not support.) It will also work if you''re tech savvy and can set up your own SMTP server on your local intranet, and use it to relay to your ISP''s SMTP server.
I do need to add that if you''re interested in scanning, but don''t really care about the email, the printer software comes with a client GUI scan program. Thus you can retrieve your scanned documents from the printer that way. (I don''t really care for it. I need the email feature.)
As for the other features, the laser printing seems pretty good. I haven''t used it much yet. I have not used the fax feature yet at all.
